blows, it's west. here comes the front. it's here but increasing the fog. low clouds and the drizzle is beginning to show up. it will be returning tonight, but low clouds making a pretty good march inland, 43 tahoe, a lot of 50s here, the coast is definitely warmer. good 10, 12 degrees. 40s today, in the 40s and 50s, breezy, cool, and fog and sun, a cooler pattern, and the wind picks up. it's back here. that's what's going to sweep in on saturday, giving the best opportunity for rain. not a lot. and i think most areas will get a little bit. fog increasing. we have a sierra nevada forecast coming up in about 15 minutes. 60s, 70s or mainly low 80s. >> steve, good morning, we're looking at traffic that's better than yesterday or seemed to get a little bit of a lighter than usual commute on this thursday, and you can see north and southbound interstate 880 is slobbing good in both

directions. -- is looking good in both directions. the morning commute is looking good, if you are approaching the bay bridge. a little bit of a slow down. not completely light but the traffic is still moving along relatively well. by the way, once you get onto the upper deck of bay bridge, we don't have any major problems on the span. let's talk about the south bay and northbound 101. traffic a little bit slow approaching the 280 interchange. we have been looking at -- what is wrong with this, i have to laugh. northbound 101 is moving along well. 280 is a little slow. 7:03. let's go back to the desk. new this morning, a dramatic search and arrest of a burglary suspect in san francisco. he is accused of breaking into a bank of america with a crow bar. tara moriarty is on scene where officers go to great heights to camp him. good morning tara. >> we have just learned that the burglar was trying to get to the money in the atm here at

the bank of america on san bruno avenue. you can see police are still guarding the bank here. the suspect broke through the building in order to get to that atm, and he used the roof to do it. he tripped a silent alarm, so when police arrived, he used an air vent to escape. after an hour search, police finally caught him. here's how they zeroed in on him. they knew they were looking for a man in a black hood i de, armed with a crow bar. the officers called the k-9 unit and the fire department to climb on the roof and do a search. they ended up tracking on the suspect the roof of an apartment building two doors down. as he was surrendering, he fell. >> i responded to several different calls of silent alarms at banks but i think this might be the first time that i witnessed somebody actually falling through a roof. >> reporter: the suspect did not appear to be hurt. he is described as a san

francisco resident in his early 30s who has a criminal past. he has been taken down to the jail for booking. police are on scene, gathering evidence on the roof, taking pictures, that sort of thing and they're going to have to be monitoring the bank until it is completely sealed up and boarded up. live in san francisco, tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. 7:04. san francisco police are investigating a double shooting which indirectly led to an officer getting injured. just before 8:00 last night, police rushed to 23rd and arkansas streets in the potrero hill neighborhood. a man and woman were found shot in a car. the man died from his wounds. the woman was hit in the arm and leg. she is expected to survive. an officer suffered minor injuries when police used pepper spray to disburse a crowd that had gathered at the crime scene. investigators are looking for two suspects, both in their 20s driving a burgundy colored car.

last night 13 people, including a 3-year-old boy were shot in a chicago park. it happened at a basketball court in the city's south side. witnesses say several men fired shots from a car before speeding away. the 3-year-old boy was in critical condition but is reportedly doing better after surgery overnight. witnesses describe the chaos. >> i heard shots, i came over and there was a lot of people down. >> it was a lot of shots, boom, boom, boom. >> all other victims are said to be in serious or stable condition. no suspects have been arrested and police say the motive was likely gang related. time is 7:06. police in petaluma cracking down on homeless camps in the city. this after three transients were found dead in the past month. the body of a 25-year-old was found wednesday under the d street bridge. police say none of the deaths were suspicious, they are concerned about the number of homeless camps and also the

threat to transients and people passing by. the press democrat reports a grass fire last week started right near several homeless camps. in less than an hour from right now, apple will release its latest versions of the iphone. these are live pictures. our cameras panning around. people standing outside in the cold. this is outside of an apple store in san francisco. hundreds of people lined up out there. now, for the first time ever, the company is releasing two versions. the iphone 5s, it will cost about $199 with a 2 year contract. it's got the new fingerprint sensor. they are also offering a new gold phone where a lot of people say they are camping out to get. there are reports it will be in short supply. not everyone who wants one will get one. apple is also offering a cheaper 5c model. it will cost 99 bucks. people have been camping out since monday to get their hands on the new phone. this is what the lines look

like at the store in palo alto this morning. about a 100 people were in line the last time we checked. it's 7:07. pal low el toe wanting -- pal lo alto wants to be a electric friendly city. one would require all new homes to be charger friendly which would cost about $200. it's nearly 10 times that much to rewire a home to include a car charger. another proposal calls for chargers at all new hotels. another earthquake shook southern california last night making it the third jolt for the region that day. the most recently was one a 3.9 in magnitude, in san diego county. early in the morning, two other earthquakes of similar strength hit los angeles county, about 30 minutes apart. no damage or injuries have been

reported from any of these quakes, but they did rattle nerves. they have seen a lot of seismic activity cently. the cooler off period in the b.a.r.t. labor dispute ends in 20 days from now. b.a.r.t. is working on a possible plan b where the b.a.r.t. managers would operate trains if union workers do go out on strike. ktvu's claudine wong joining us live with the mare island connection to the story. >> reporter: if you talk to b.a.r.t. and we have last night and this morning, they will tell you the training is not a secret. this is a plan that has been talked about. what is new is the fact that the training is underway and it brought us here to this warehouse. on mare island, we came here because he heard the b.a.r.t. trains were being taken to this

warehouse, and that the training was happening and that's getting the union upset. let's take you through how all of this went down. training managers have been out there as a possible option and taste of the strike, especially in the case of a prolonged one. b.a.r.t. trains are seen going down the highway and not on the tracks. someone sent pictures of trains in a warehouse, and we hadn't seen the cars for ourselves until just about an hour ago. take a look at video we shot for you this morning, these are the b.a.r.t. train cars, we saw inside the warehouse. it is a 112 square foot warehouse. it's basically used as a rail repair shop by a french company. and they stepped up to offer them space, they took them up on it and they got to do the training. >> to prepare for the possibility of a long strike, we feel it's only responsible to plan ahead and think about train service. >> if they're seriously considering operating trains without certified train operators, experienced train

operators, that's reckless and dangerous. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. says about 12 managers are certified train operators, they started as train operators and worked their way up the organization. although it's unclear how many would be needed to run a skeletal service in the case of a strike, we should remind you, this is just a contingency plan right now. there are three weeks to negotiate until the deadline and the b.a.r.t. board would need to approve any plans to use replacement train operate o tornadoes, but training takes -- operators, but training takes time. they go through about 16 weeks of training and the union is of course arguing there's not enough time to get replacement drivers trained properly. still, that training is now underway and that possibility is still very much out there. live here on mare island, claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. we have more details about the b.a.r.t. labor dispute. b.a.r.t.'s unions have raised the issue of workers safety as a talking point in the

negotiations. b.a.r.t. says working conditions and passenger safety are just as important. now, we investigated b.a.r.t.'s safety record and found its record is very good compared to other mass transit systems. the california public utilities commission says from 2009 through may of this year, b.a.r.t. racked up 42 reportable rail transit safety incidents. san diego had 92. sacramento 102. santa clara bta109. la's mta180. san francisco, 366. it is 7:12. a fire breaks out in a san jose home just a short time ago. we'll tell you why extra police presence is required at the scene. also san jose's mayor gets slapped what fine. you'll find out why and the -- with a fine. you'll find out why and the reason the fine was reduced

new this morning, al-qaeda militants attack barracks in yemen. authorities say the attack at dawn caught the soldiers off guard. there was heavy fog in the area at the time. the military in yemen has been fighting against a branch of al- qaeda considered by the u.s. one of the world east most dangerous terror groups. ambassadors from the united nations security council are working toward an agreement on

a resolution to place syrian chemical weapons under international control. yesterday was the third straight day of talks and no agreement has been reached. secretary of state john kerry says the un general assembly needs to act quickly to approve a u.s. russia deal. >> it's vital for the international community to stand up and speak out in the strongest possible terms about the importance of enforceable action to rid the world of syria's chemical weapons. >> today the syrian government sent an initial declaration outlining the chemical weapons program for the prohibition of chemical weapons. that is considered a first step toward removing the stockpile. it's being called the strongest storm this year, and this may hit hong kong by the weekend. in the past 24 hours, a cyclone in the west pacific has become a super storm. it's being called usagi.

winds jumped from 75 miles per hour to 160 miles per hour. now it's the equivalent of a category 5 hurricane and it's expected to hit hong kong on sunday. well, no one's complaining, but 2 1/2 years after that big earthquake and tsunami in japan, very little debris has reached us here on the california coast. tomorrow is california's annual coastal clean up. environmentalists had feared damage from the tsunami would end up along the shores, however only 35 objects actually reached the united states and british columbia. the only verified tsunami item was this, a fishing boat, covered with barn -- barnacles, scientists are speculating parts broke up or went to the bottom of the ocean. san leandro's mayor has suspended the controversial plan to raise the flag of the

people's republic of china next month. the public should be able to weigh in before city hall takes final action. on monday, the city council voted to fly the flag for support of the chinese community and to show the city is open to chinese investments. but critics argue raising the flag would signal san leandro condones, china's alleged human rights violations. chuck reed was fined for a violation of state campaign finance laws, but his fine is just 1 dollar. reed could have received a $3500 fine but the fair political practices commission decided the violation was not intentional. last year, a pension reform committee controlled by mayor reed funneled $100,000 to city council woman rose herrera's reelection. he contended he did nothing wrong because he was not a candidate at the time. frustration growing for

people who haven't received state unemployment checks and now people who are apparently taking out their anger on the workers at unemployment offices. the edd says some of the office workers have been threatened by clients but they're not giving specific information about the threats. it won't even say if it has increased security at any of its officer -- offices. a spokesperson says they're trying to fix the problem as quickly as possible. >> we're doing everything within our power to fix it and get it resolved. there is no stone having gone unturned. >> he says about 60,000 unemployed californians are missing at least one of their checks. she said the problem started with the edd installed a new computer system over the labor day weekend. it mistakenly stopped some payments. that's being compounded every two weeks when people try to recertify for their benefits. 7:19. i want to check in with sal and see if it might be friday light

out there on the roads. sal. >> it's a little bit. we have traffic that's moving along nicely out there. we have a look at some of the live pictures and i'm going to show you the 237. there's a little bit of slow traffic. we happened to catch most of it here out of downtown milpitas and it picks up. the rest of the bay area as we look at a wide view, it's not really showing a lot of red on the maps, which is perfect, as you drive on the peninsula, for example, perhaps you're trying to get down the bay shore freeway and get to the san francisco airport. it is a nice drive on 101 to san bruno with no major problems and no problems on the san mateo bridge. let's talk about the bay bridge toll plaza and the traffic there is backed up from moderate to light of 10 to 15 minutes. let's go to steve. yesterday we had clear skies. now there's lots of low clouds. they're forming fast as the front inches closer.

a couple reports of drizzle. that's going to increase tonight into tomorrow. the rain is back here. this is what's developing. that's the cold pool. that's the dynamics. this guy is just setting the stage, kind of opening the door slowly. weather changes cooler today, a lot of low clouds. you'll notice a westerly breeze. light rain will make it on saturday. not a lot. a little bit. probably again far less. north bay will take heaviest amounts. anything over a tenth or a quarter would surprise me. the big dues would be the cool dune, and low clouds back and big change. 89 yesterday to 78 in santa rosa. livermore, 94 yesterday. 82 in san jose. 87 to 79. the system that's coming in, again, is lifting that fog bank, giving us a no doubt about it westerly breeze. the front moves in saturday, light rain, mainly to the north, further north, better opportunity for drizzle. the cooling will continue. sierra nevada, iron man lake

7:25. a big reward is now being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person who sparked two northern california fires earlier this year. the fires in the 6 rivers burned 36,000 acres last july. a $20,000 reward is being offered by the u.s. forestry service. and the rim fire burning in yosemite national park continues to be a challenge for firefighters. they were hoping to have it contained by midnight, but it's still only 84% contained. full containment has been pushed back almost two weeks to october 1st. a red flag warning is in effect through saturday and the fire has burned nearly 257,000 acres. time is 7:26.

a couple expecting a new baby got an unexpected surprise on the side of the road in roseville. celeste meeker and her husband were on the way to a hospital. the baby didn't want to wait. they were forced to pull over on the side of the freeway. dad had to start the delivery by himself. emergency crews got there shortly after. elijah is a professional photographer and he was documenting the delivery every step of the way. this also happened to be his birthday. >> i was so annoyed he was videoing me. >> happy birthday. i don't think you got anything for your birthday, besides a baby. >> that's a lot, dad. happy birthday, mom, dad and the brand new baby, august blue meeker, they're all doing fine. it is 7:27. developing news we've been following for the past hour, a fire call quickly turns into a criminal investigation. ktvu news was the first on the

temperatures will be dropping today, more 60s including san francisco. we'll go 66. 40s to the north bay. 50s. everyone's pretty close except north bay which is cooler. look for the low cloud deck. it's going to be cooler today. 10, 15-degree drop as the west wind kicks in. more 60s and 70s closer to the bay. here's sal. steve, good morning, and right now, traffic is moving along relatively well in most areas. we have had some trouble spots break out recently. the traffic is moving along well on 24 as you drive from walnut creek to oakland. at the bay bridge, we have a back up of about 10 to 15 minutes. it's not really severe. there will be waiting for you, though. northbound 85. just got word of an injury accident on 85 as you come away from 101. traffic is not going to slow until the accident and stays slow after the crash as you head to highway 17. that's what's happening there. there are no major problems other than that, and you might

want to think about using 101 to is 280 as an alternative. at 7:32, let's go back to the desk. new this morning, police in san jose are on the scene of a house fire where an illegal pot grow may be to blame. this happened on wigwam court. janine de la vega was the first reporter on scene. she talked to neighbors and one is not surprised about this find. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, some neighbors are telling me as well as firefighters that several years ago a fire started here in the same house near monterey highway and chen with. they say a marijuana operation was found inside. firefighters received a 911 call before 5:30 that smoke was coming from the attic. there were metal guard bars on the house and when they entered, they found a small

pile of garbage. police confirmed the house was being used to grow marijuana. the entire home was dedicated to the illegal operation and it didn't appear anyone was living there. >> i was surprised to know that because once in a while i saw somebody in there. rarely. i just say hi to them. that's it. >> reporter: firefighters say the electrical wiring appeared to be tampered with, which is common with marijuana grow houses because of all the equipment used. pg&e was called to cut power to the home because of the danger that it posed. at this point, police cannot enter the house until a search warrant is secured. that's when we should get more details on how many plants were inside the home. how extensive the operation was and possibly who was responsible for operating this. and back out here live in the last several minutes, several more police cars showed up. we're told they're going to babysit the house until they secure a search warrant which could be a couple hours. so far we haven't seen the owner of the house pull up here. reporting live from san jose,

janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. 7:34. happening now, iphone excitement reaching a fever pitch. lines are literally out the door for people waiting to get their hands on one of those new phones. brian flores live at an apple store in the marina district of san francisco. some people may be disappointed, though, right brian. >> reporter: yeah, some might be, dave. some might be. but go ahead and take a look at the lines for yourself. this line into the apple store here in the marina district starts over there. if you take a look to my right, your left, the line goes around the corner there. at last check there were about 120 people. probably close to 140 people now as the store opens at 8:00 this morning. first person in line says he was here at 8:30 last night. others were here at 3 or 4 in the morning, all in opening for -- anticipation for the two newest versions. getting a certain color will be a problem. we're talking about the coveted gold iphone. we're hearing that demand is high but that suppliers are

having a tough time keeping up the orders. i tried asking store employees they have at this store, just by talking to people, they say they may have about 10. officially we haven't heard an official number on how many they have. some in line say they hope to get one and that the 5c isn't an option. >> for a hundred bucks. it's only a 10000 dollar difference. >> it's a complete revolution. i think it's going to change the way we use mobility in the next 6 to 12 months and we're going to see it ask start to inevacuate around that -- and start to inevacuate around that. >> reporter: the 5s has a faster processer. on the ios7 operating system, it comes in different colors, similar to the iphone 5. comes in pink and blue and green and white. back out here live, you see a lot of people trying to get a

cup of coffee, water, passing the time, and sleeping bags on their apple computers and some other older iphones, i guess. store employees will be handing out more coffee and information cards to see how the store procedure is going to go when they enter just a little less than half an hour from you. live at the apple store, brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. 7:36. we're learning the same company that did the background check on the navy yard gunman for his security clearance investigated edward snowden, the former nsa contractor who leaked classified documents. the company, usis says it conducted a background check on aaron alexis in 2007. his employer says the background check revealed only a traffic violation. that is despite an incident in 2004 when police in seattle arrested him for shooting out tires of a car in a fit of anger. and people are questioning how he was able to legally buy a

gun when he had been discharged from the navy for ," a pattern of misconduct. ". under federal law, only a dishonnable discharge makes them ineligible to own a gun in civilian life. 7:37. a las vegas based airline has to recheck emergency slides. allegiant air recently discovered an inspection compliance issue. the carrier must reinspect the slides of its md80 fleets before it can fly again. it is apologizing to customers about possible delays or cancellations. the city of san francisco is hoping to reduce its bike thefts by 50% over the next five years. the crack down effort comes as the number of bike riders in the city continues to rise. the city says there were 817 bike thefts last year and that

number is only expected to grow. the new plan would call for an expansion of bike parking and 50 bike lockers in parking garages. the plan is set to be approved by the board of supervisors october 1st and goes into effect this december. 7:38. police in hayward investigatorring the mysterious shooting of -- investigating the mysterious shooting of a 10- year-old girl. several shots were fired into the home. wounding the child who was sound asleep in her bedroom. one of the bullets hit the girl in her lower back. she is expected to survive. the big question though is why family members waited more than 5 hours before they called 911. >> we're trying to figure out if they knew that there was a shooting or if they kind of pieced things together after the fact. >> how is she feeling. >> she's doing fine? >> what's your relationship to her. >> i'm her father. >> the child's father did not explain that delay in calling

911, but police say the family is cooperating with investigators in the search for the suspect. well, this morning, a group in san francisco plans to reopen a foreclosed house in the bay view district. the homeowner fell behind on paying his mortgage. last month he lost the home and had to move in with other members of his family. the group says that areas like the bay view district are vulnerable to foreclosure since loans don't match the home's current value and they say the government needs to step in to help those folks. it's 20 minutes before 8:00. happening today, a new chapter in the criminal case against george sharikawa relating to a 2010 illegal campaign mail. he pled guilty to misusing public funs and his lawyer

claims the plea deal covers all political corruption and they may call as a witness the june who presided over the original case to decide in prosecutors coaxed him to take the plea agreement. the judge raised ewe brows by meeting with defense attorneys without the presence of prosecutors. more officers are getting ready to join the oakland police force. later this morning, dozens of men and women will graduate from the oakland police department's 167th academy. in march, nearly 40 recruits participated in the first graduation from the police department in more than 4 years. the department is experiencing some of the lowest staffing levels in decades and are hoping to boost the number of officers. the officers will begin patrolling the streets next week. mexico is reeling. the death toll from dual storms keeps climbing while 60,000

for standard contraceptives for their workers. some companies object to that on religious grounds. they went to court arguing they can't be forced by the government to pay for birth control or abortions. the supreme court could take up that issue in its session this fall. home depot now shifting some of its workers health care from company insurance to public health exchanges. the worldest biggest home improvement shane says 20,000 -- chain says 20,000 workers chose a limited liability medical plan that won't be allowed under the health care laws. kizer workers may not be seeing as many friday treats brought in my coworkers, after they offered cash bonuses to groups of workers that lose weight, lower their blood pressure and stop smoking. the bonuses will be awarded based on the improved health of workers in regions and not be based on individual

improvements. kizer says the biggest improvements will result in bonuses of $500 per worker. there could be another toll hike ahead of drivers on the golden gate bridge. the district is facing a $140 million deficit over the next five years because of seismic retro fitting, painting and other projects. it's not clear how big a fee hike is needed to make up the shortfall. it doesn't need to be an exact dollars increase. the new electronic toll system means the increase could round up to pennys. it could be 5.47. the issue is expected to be discussed next month. and final approval could come today for a big project, the movable concrete barrier. the $26 million barrier is designed to prevent head on collisions. it will be installed next year in late october or early november once approved and at that time the bridge would have to be closed for 52 hours. it's the longest time they have

7:56, the death toll in mexico is approaching 100, following two hurricanes, hitting the east and west coast days apart. manuel reached land fall yesterday along mexico's specific coast. ingrid hit the gulf coast last weekend. the two storms killed 97 people. another 68 are missing and believed to be buried under a landslide. 60,000 tourists were stranded by heavy flooding. here in the united states, the death toll from the massive flooding in colorado is now up to at least 10. 140 others are still missing. many of them in mountain communities where entire towns have been cut off by washed out roads. the national guard is trying to get to stranded victims. the flooding cause $2 billion in property damage statewide in

problems this morning. charges of breaking into a bank of america branch with a crow bar. ktvu's tara moriarty is in san francisco now to explain how firefighters helped the police in making that arrest. good morning. tara. >> reporter: good morning, you know, police say they see a lot of strange crime scenes but they hadn't seen one quite like this. as you mentioned they needed the fire department to help them out. they say the particular was trying to get to money in the atm and went through the actual bank in order too to do that. officers are guarding the bank. right near the 101 freeway onramp. after an hour search, police finally caught him. this is how they zeroed in on the suspect. around 4:00 this morning, the suspect triggered a silent alarm. the security company used surveillance cameras to track his movements. they discovered a man in a black hooded sweatshirt armed with a crow bar entered the bank through an air vent via the roof. they relayed the information to

police. officers called in the k-9 unit and the fire department to climb up on the roof and do a search. they found him on the roof of an apartment building two doors down. >> at that point we set up a perimeter. we used a couple of the fire departments to gain access to the roofs and eventually we were able to fish them out on top of one of the roofs where he fell through the top of the roof. >> the suspect did not appear to be hurt. he is described as a san francisco resident in his early 30s who has a criminal past. he has been taken to the jail for booking. police on scene, they say they are gathering evidence at the top where the hole is actually in the roof and they will be guarding the bank here i guess until everything is repaired. live in san francisco. i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 8:05. last night, a man was killed in potrero hill. a woman was wounded in a shooting that led to a san francisco police officer being

hurt. a man and a woman had been shot in a car. that man later died from his wounds. the woman was wounded in the arm and leg but she's expected to survive. now, a police officer suffered minor injuries after pepper spray was used to break up a big crowd gathered at the crime scene. investigators still out there searching for two suspects described as being in their 20s and driving a burgundy colored car. another mass shooting, the second one this week. last night, 13 people including a 3-year-old boy were shot in a chicago park. it happened at a basketball court on the south side of chicago. witnesses say several men fired shots from a car before they sped away. that 3-year-old boy was in critical condition reportedly he's doing better after going through surgery during the night. the witnesses described the chaos. >> i heard shots. i came over and there was a lot of people down. >> a lot of shots, boom, boom,

boom, boom,. >> all other victims are in serious or stable condition. no suspects have been arrested. police say the shooting was probably gang related. on sunday, president obama will attend a memorial service for the victims of the washington navy yard shooting. the president and first lady will visit with the families of the victims. the president will also speak at the memorial. the white house says president obama wants to share in the nation's pain after another mass shooting. a new poll find that a growing number of americans don't believe the government is doing a good job of protecting the second amendment right to bear arms. 44% of americans surveyed think the government is doing a good job of safeguarding the right to keep and bear arms. that's down from 57% two years ago. the cooling off period in the b.a.r.t. labor dispute ends in just 20 days from now. and ktvu news has learned b.a.r.t. is working on a possible plan b to have managers operate trains in the union workers go out on

strike. ktvu's claudine wong joining us live to tell us about the mare island connection to this story. >> reporter: if you're going to train managers to run those trains in the case of a strike, you need to train them first. and we have learned that the trains they're using for that training are here. this is austin warehouse. it's a 112,000 square foot facility and we looked inside this morning, and let me show you what we found. b.a.r.t. trains. this is video that we shot earlier this morning. the train cars are actually in the back of the warehouse. the lights weren't even on when we peeked in there. that is where the trains are being kept. they are here for a reason that could affect thousands of commuters. the trains used in training the managers in case they need to operate the trains during a strike. training managers to run trains has been out there for a possible option. especially when you talk about the possibility of a prolonged strike. but on monday, we really saw

that possibility become more of a issue when the b.a.r.t. seen going down the highway. they did confirm the trains were headed here, prepping for the possible contingency plan. >> to prepare for the possibility of a long strike, we feel it's only responsible to plan ahead and think about scaled sole train service. >> if they're considering operating trains without certified train oater tornadoes, experienced -- operators, experienced train operators, that's reckless and dangerous. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. says there are a dozen managers that are certified train operators, basically train operators that made their way through the transit agency and are now managers. it's unclear how many operators will be used to run skeletal service in the case of a prolonged strike. this is very early in all of this. the b.a.r.t. board would need to approve a plan before it goes forward. when you're talking about training, it does take a couple

steve's right here. let's check weather now. what are we in for steve. >> a cooler pattern. yesterday the coast was clear and today things have picked up. our cold front right there, cool front, cold air is up there. that's what we're waiting for on saturday come swinging through. big changes, mainly cooler, and the coast which enjoyed a couple nicer days inland temps in the 80s. they will come down. we will get light rain, especially on the north bay on saturday. not a big system. we have a little bit out of it. and the cooler air moving in as well. a tiny business of drizzle. as that system gets closer, it will start to increase the fog. 70s for a couple days. 66. a lot of low clouds in place. 40s in the north bay. 50s, thousand or 6 -- though or 60 degrees. i think the west wind, far enough inland, you'll notice it later today. fog, sun, breezy, and the cooler for all today.

low clouds not going anywhere anytime soon until after saturday where they'll dissipate. 60s, 70s, mainly low 80s. here's sal. traffic is mostly doing well. we have late commuters getting to the roads and that's getting a little bit of crowding going, but right now, let's start off with a look at the commutes. the toll plaza, get good news going here. this commute has been the same for the last few minutes. no major problems coming through. as a matter of fact it had been a very nice drive and if you are driving on to the upper deck, it has been very nice drive also as well. getting onto 880 northbound. you can see that the traffic is moving along pretty well as you drive through. i do want to mention that we have some public transit delays. b.a.r.t. has some major delays going. as a matter of fact, major delays because of a traffic problem outside of the san bruno station. no delays on caltran, muni. still experiencing the delays. 8:31. let's go back to the desk.

new this morning, san jose police are at the scene of the a house fire that may have been started by an illegal marijuana group. it happened on wigwam court. ktvu's janine de la vega was the first reporter there on the scene and now you're telling us police have actually gone inside the house, right? >> yes, and they actually just came out. police discovered about 70 young marijuana plants inside the home in south san jose near monterey highway in chen with. it is not a sophisticated operation. when a neighbor called 911 after seeing smoke coming from the attic on the home. firefighters had a difficult time entering because there were metal guard bars on the house. no one was inside the house and the flames were knocked down within a half hour. once the smoke cleared, the plants were discovered and police took over the investigation.

they're trying to determine if anyone lived there or if it was strictly used as a grow house. >> i was surprised. i wondered why i saw somebody in there. i just say hi to them. that's it. >> reporter: and here you see officers hauling away some of the plants. police will be trying to track down the owner of the home or try to determine if somebody was renting the house. neighbors say there was a fire at the house several years back and marijuana was discovered then as well. police tell me that they are going to look into that. firefighters say the electrical wiring appeared to be tampered with which is common with marijuana grow houses because of the equipment used. pg&e is here investigating and had to cut the power to the home because of the danger that it posed. and again, you see officers are here, they're wrapping up their investigation here and there will be a lot of follow up to do on this. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. thanks. 8:33. happening now, the newest

iphones have now officially become available to the public. they went on sale in the bay area about 30 minutes ago. brian flores is live at the apple store in the marina district in san francisco with more on how people are reacting to the new sale. good morning brian. >> good morning. it's kind of mixed when you talk about reaction. people were anticipating to get a certain iphone and they're finding that the certain iphone is not there. we'll talk about this in a few minutes. lots of peop inside getting the 5s and 5c. i haven't heard many people get the 5c but a lot of people getting the s. the first customer was escorted into the store at 8:00. waited in line for close to 12 hours he says and when he did this is what he arrived to. hours for the 5s and 5c and in particular the highly eted gold iphone. we knew this was going to be hard to get. demand was high and suppliers not being able to keep up. we heard there might have been 10 gold iphones available at this location and we talked to the second person in line, yes, the second person in line, he says he got one of the last ones available. >> they seem to have one or two 32s and 64s, i think they had a bunch. i don't know. >> didn't matter what carrier. >> well, sprint they might have had, but that was the only carrier i didn't want. >> reporter: and a lot of people waiting in line, hoping to get that gold iphone. when you get to the front, it's not going to happen. pushed back in terms of supplies, probably a couple weeks from what we're hearing. a lot of people still happy to go inside the apple store this morning as we take you out here live. a lot of people anxiously awaiting this new iphone 5s

which people say will be revolutionary. we shall see about that. i talked to the third person in line who says he got the last gold iphone at this location. he says it was a 64 gigabyte gold iphone, and i talked to a store official who said they're out of gold iphones but they have plenty of other ones, including the iphone c. brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. in fact, we have new information, we are just learning that apple has sold out of its iphone 5s. we just heard brian say many of the people he talked to were wanting to bite 5s, not the new 5c. demand has been incredible and a spokesperson says we are sold out or have limited supply of certain iphone 5s models in some stores. apple declines to give specifics on how many phones have been sold.

historically they tend to not release their numbers until after the first weekend of sales. again, it looks like the 5s right now has sold out and just a limited number of the phones that are already in the stores are available. after that, you'll have to get on a waiting list. apple's proposed spaceship campus is likely to win full approval from the city of cupertino before the end of november. there are several steps but they believe the project will become a strong part of silicon valley's global image. and one tech analyst says it could draw tourists to cupertino. they hope to move into the complex by 2016. time is 8:37, the head of yahoo is celebrating the latest good fortune. the 38-year-old chief executive is listed number one. and the 40 under 40 list. meyer who's normally reserved is publicly saying she's happy about it. she's tweeting on twitter, saying she's proud to be let'sed number one among

tennison. someone fired several shots into the home, wounding the girl. one struck the girl in the lower back. she's expected to survive. the big question now is why family members waited more than 5 hours before calling 911. >> we're trying to figure out if they knew that there was a shooting or if they kind of pieced things together after the fact. we don't know. if you heard shots you would want to check on your family. police say the family is now cooperating with investigators but so far there is no word on any possible suspects in the shooting. this morning, a group in san francisco plans to reopen a foreclosed home in the bay view district. the homeowner had fallen behind on his mortgage and last month, he lost the home and had to move in with his family. the group says areas like the bay view district are vulnerable to foreclosure since loans don't match the home's current market value.

iphone 5s is already sold out. the gold colored model was the most sought after phone of the day. apple released the iphone 5c. that's a cheaper version. sells for $99. you don't see this often, but early this morning in san francisco, police there climbed a fire trucks ladder. they were chasing a man suspected of bungling a bank burglary. tara moriarty was the first reporter on the scene a little after 4:00 this morning. she's in san francisco live now to tell us how the suspect botched things out there. what happened tara. >> reporter: botched and bungled are two really great ways to describe what happened out here this morning. police say that the burglar tried to get money inside the atm, going through the inside of the bank. you can see officers here guarding the bank. it's the bank of america located off san bruno avenue near the 101 freeway onramp. after an hour search, police caught him. here's how they zeroed in.

around 4:00, the suspect triggered a silent alarm. the security company used surveillance cameras to track his movements. they discovered that a man in a black hooded sweatshirt armed with a crow bar had entered the bank through an air vent via the roof. they relayed that information to police. officers called in the k-9 unit and the fire department came to climb on the roof and do a search. they found him on the roof of an apartment building two doors down. we heard scuffling in the laundry room. they went on the roof, they couldn't find anything, they went in the back and eventually they have to go through our building and i told them about a nook that's up there, and i guess that's where they found them. >> the suspect then tried to get away when he findly agreed to surrender, he fell through the roof of the building. he didn't appear to be hurt. he's described as a san francisco resident in his early 30s. he has a criminal past. he's been taken to the jail and is being booked.

thousands of californians are getting ready to help clean up beaches, and california waterways, tomorrow is coastal clean up day, the guinness book of world records, calls it the largest garbage collection ever organized. 65,000 volunteers picked up p 70,000 pounds of debris. this year much of the focus will center on getting rid of cigarette butts, making up about 30% of litter along shorelines and creeks. an environmentalists had feared some of the debris could come from japan as a result of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami but it turned out little debris floated to the west coast. the bay area news reports only 35 objects reached the u.s. and the only thing found in california was this fishing boat covered with barn chemicals that ended up near -- barnacles that ended up near the border. and most broke up in the

pacific and sank to the bottom of the ocean. if you drive, the golden gate bridge, there could be another toll hike in the future. the district is facing a 140 million dollars deficit over the next five years because of seismic retrofitting, painting and other projects, how big could the toll hike be, we don't know, with the electronic tolling system, it could be just pennys, the issue is expecting to be debated next month. an overturned big rig hauling boulders shut down a freeway onramp in fremont for hours yesterday. the chp said the big rig collided with a car on the mission boulevard onramp to interstate 680. 23-tons of rocks and 20-gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the road. took crews more than 4 hours to clean it up. >> looks like quite a mess. hopefully nothing quite that serious going on now. let's check with sal and apparently it's slow on 880. >> it is slow on 880. just the normal slowdowns getting into downtown oakland.
