let's go right to rosemary. good morning, rosemary. everyone wants to know how long is it going to rain and how much? >> yes, we will see enough definitely to get us wet. anywhere from a few one- hundredths to a quarter inch for parts of the north bay. this system will swing through for the afternoon. best chance at getting rain will be midmorning to midafternoon. giving you a close-up look, there is a rain line to the north of us. i'm picking up a few scattered showers around the bay, but more is on the way. i'll have a detailed time line, how much we do expect, and a look at temperatures for today, coming up. well, oakland police tell side show crackdowns are a priority, especially on the weekends. [ tires screeching ] >> officers say a driver who recently rammed two police cars is now facing a felony charge of assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon. the side show you're looking at right now happened at 90th and mcarthur between 1:00 and 2:00

in the morning last saturday. officers responded quickly to a call about the incident. >> the officers went in to pull over the car. the car pulled over. the officer stopped. the car immediately reversed. he intentionally rammed both cars trying to get away and he was able to get out, but his car became immobile. >> now, as police took that man into custody, bystanders actually threw bottles at the officers. police say no one was hurt. officers say the california highway patrol will be working with them this weekend as they try to crack down on side shows. happening today, the nation's largest coastal cleanup event. and right here in the bay area, thousands of volunteers are gathering at beaches and waterways to pick up trash. ktvu's christian calf continue joining us from san mateo, where one seasonality about to get under way, in 30 minutes.

>> reporter: in a few moments, we'll give you a preview of the trash they will be picking occupy this beach, all part of a volunteer cleanup effort at the coastline. volunteers cleared a total of 320 tons of garbage off the shoreline last year. san mateo had the biggest turnout for volunteers last year here in the bay area. this year, they expect about a thousand volunteers to show up. volunteers report finding last year everything from fish tanks to vacuum cleaners. traditionally, one of the most common items volunteers find is cigarette butts. in fact, some environmental groups are pushing for a new fee on cigarettes to help pay for cleaning them up. again, this is a volunteer effort up and down the coastline. volunteers are expected to begin cleaning up at about 7:30 this morning. if we could come back to our live picture, you can see just some of the garbage they will

be focusing on. there's already trash along this area here in san mateo. clearly, a lot of trash to pick up. a big effort to clear up the coastline. again, this coastal clear-upset to get under way in san mateo in about 30 minutes from now. we'll continue to have updates for you and let you know exactly what they are finding and how the cleanup effort is going. for now, live in san mateo, christien kafton, ktvu. the san francisco 49ers say its young star,al done smith, will play tomorrow despite his arrest on dui and marijuana charges. smith turns 24 next wednesday. police say his pickup truck went off the road and hit a tree in the front yard of a home on san jose's silver creek neighborhood. skid marks could still be seen on the curb and left a pile of burned rubber. witnesses say they found him hunched over the steering wheel. when they knocked on his window, he raised his head and asked them what had happened.

>> i see smoke coming from the car, but he didn't know, engine keep going. he didn't know. i think he sleeping. >> the tires dug a half-foot hole in the woman's yard. smith was arrested and did post a $5250 bail, but he did return to 49ers practice in santa clara in the afternoon. >> disappointed and, you know, i felt like he needs to go to work, face his teammates, and, you know, soldier through it. >> he's got his head on straight. i think, you know, sometimes stuff just happens. if everybody went looking through everybody's past, you would find some stuff on everybody. >> smith was arrested last year in miami on a dui charge, which was reduced to reckless driving. he also faces a civil lawsuit for a shooting at his home in which he also sustained minor

stab wounds. the nfl is going to review this latest incident. he could be suspended under the league's substance abuse policy. well, the 49ers recently launched a partnership with mothers against drunk driving. the head of the bay area chapter hopes there will be a long-term benefit from this case. >> i think the notoriety of these players brings it more to the forefront than it does perhaps the general population. what's important to note is that drunk driving can happen to absolutely anyone. >> smith has not commented publicly yet. he was not hurt in yesterday's incident, but has been nursing a back injury from last sunday's game against seattle. police are searching for the driver who hit and killed a pedestrian in east oakland. officers say a man pushing a car was hit by another driver just before 8:00 last night on international boulevard. the victim's identity has not been released. police have not given a description of the person who drove off. two boys are now suspected of shattering car windows with a beebee gun on a busy san jose freeway.

highway patrol says at least a dozen cars in the area of highway 101 near mckey road were hit wednesday night during rush hour. accompanied by his parents yesterday, a 15-year-old came forward and confessed to the shootings. officers say he also implicated an 11-year-old friend. >> how he told his parents or how the parents said, wait a minute, we didn't know. but the mere fact is that at some point, the 15-year-old said enough is enough, gotta come clean. >> the two boys were released to their parents. they could face felony vandalism charges. the chp says this case is still under investigation because there could be other victims. belmont police are looking for whoever vandalized an elementary school campus. police sent us this pictures of some of the graffiti at fox elementary school, which is on st. james road. they say vandals struck late wednesday night. several outbuildings, tables, and playground equipment were tagged. fox elementary had just remodeled its campus this summer. and speaking of summer,

today is the last day of summer, believe it or not. i think rosemary, it feels a little bit like fall today. >> right. >> light showers out there? >> a little ironic, because for the first day of fall, we'll be dry and a lot warmer than we are today. we are going to be wet for your afternoon. looks like it's going to get going within the next couple of hours. i'll show you the time line in just a moment. let's take a look at, well, a little bit of sunshine out there. a mix of sun and clouds. we're dealing with partly to mostly cloudy skies. scattered showers lasting for half of the day, then moving out. not a huge event, but definitely enough to get us wet and definitely enough to be tracking this morning. a live look at storm tracker 2, you can see plenty of cloud cover, not picking up any rain right about i-80 at fairfield. fairfield reporting a few light scattered showers, so perhaps a little drizzle, light rain falling below the beam. i've got rain here on the radar, though, to the north of us where we are looking at areas right around guerneville,

dillon beach. showed you this a few moments ago. the line of rain expected to move through in the next couple of hours is still to the north of us, about 65 miles to the north of us. as i roll you through the future cast model, i'll show you when our best chance will be. picking it up this morning at this hour, partly to mostly cloudy skies. by 8:00, 9:00, there's that line of rain, right across the bay area. it's going to shift as we get into 10:00, closer to san jose. you can see light rain expected to fall by noon time through san jose, through santa cruz, and continuing off to the south by 2:00, 3:00, already beginning to clear out. so i think for the second half of the day, we'll even see some sunshine, but we will have the possibility of those scattered showers midmorning to midafternoon and then by dinner time, woe are drying out. temperatures right now, definitely mild. a lot warmer than yesterday. we are in the warm sector of

. scattered showers in the forecast for the first half of your saturday. . police are asking for the public's help in finding a killer involved in a deadly shooting in san jose. they have released this picture of 23-year-old sean moore, charged in the murder of ramone garcia. surveillance video captured the shooting that happened in the afternoon last month in a parking lot on third and east gillian streets.

garcia leaves behind six children. sworn in and ready to roll, right onto the streets of oakland. >> -- city of oakland-- >> 167th oakland police academy class graduated yesterday. 36 men and women will start patrolling some of the most violent neighborhoods starting next weekend. the new officers graduated on the same week the federal government awarded oakland a $4.5 million grant to hire even more officers. city leaders say the department is understaffed and the new officers say they are ready to fight crime in oakland. >> there's constant action. there's plenty to do in the city, so i'm just looking forward to contributing, to making the city safer. >> i think the key to anything is building a relationship with people and being genuine and being real. >> the officers will start patrolling a week from today, as they begin 16 weeks of field training. well, there's further outrage in connection to the navy yard shooting. the head of the it consulting company that employed the

gunman has sent an e-mail to the navy offering his services to improve security. the associated press reports the e-mail stunned navy officials, still dealing with monday's rampage that claimed the lives of 13 people, including the gunman, aaron alexis. in the e-mail, the it offered his condolences, but then laid out his work experience and the services he provides that could help improve service for the military service contractors and civilians. international experts are poring over documents released by the syrian government of its chemical weapons program. it is the first disclosure by the syrian government as part of an agreement with the u.s. and russia. damascus had until today to submit an inventory of its chemical weapons arsenal and production facilities. a white house official says the administration is pleasantly surprised by syria's cooperation so far. the u.s. estimates that syria has about 1100 tons of chemical weapons agents. another pressing issue in washington is that budget battle. in this morning's weekly address, president obama accused republicans of playing

partisan politics and jeopardizing the nation's economy. >> both houses of congress can take a simple vote to pay our bills on time, then work together to pass a budget on time. then we can declare an end to governing by crisis and govern responsibly. >> the president warns the u.s. could return to a recession if congress fails to meet two deadlines, one in mid-october for raising the debt ceiling and one at the end of this month to pass an emergency budget or risk a government shutdown. >> the american people don't want the government shut down and they don't want obama care. [ cheers ] >> house speaker john boehner led house republicans yesterday in voting to defund obama care. it was all part of an emergency funding bill to keep the government running after october 1st, the start of the new fiscal year. if no deal is reached, many federal agencies would not be funded and be forced to stop operations. many federal employees would also be out of work. travis air force base may have to ground dozens of its

planes due to budget cuts in our nation's capital. the kc-10 air tanker could soon be scrapped from the military. according to congressman john garamendi, 27 of the air force's 50 kc-10s are assigned to travis. scrapping the kc-10s has been a consideration, but the group will not comment until a final decision is made. new information this morning about how close the united states came to a nuclear disaster. a declassified document shows the air force almost detonated an atomic bomb over north carolina back in 1961. two hydrogen bombs were aboard the b-52 when it went into a tail spin and crashed. four safety mechanism kept one of the bombs from going off, but three of the mechanisms actually failed on the second bomb and only a low voltage switch kept it from exploding. the bomb was 260 times more powerful than the atomic bomb

that devastated hiroshima. people flying on allegiant airlines could be affected because of inspections. used to be safety checks were only done once every three years, but new guidelines call for an inspection every year and allegiant air was not in compliance. >> well, i'm a very patient person. i would rather be on the ground where it's safe than in the air where it's not. >> inspections are causing delays and cancellations across the country, including here in oakland. the airport tells us all allegiant airlines are grounded for the day and they are working on putting passengers onto other airlines. well, attorneys for american airlines and u.s. airways want to know why the federal government has allowed previous mergers, but blocked theirs. the airlines say they plan to ask a judge to order the justice department to turn over documents about four previous mergers between 2005 and 2011. a trial is scheduled to begin in november on the government's

lawsuit against the merger, which would create the world's largest airline. oracle ceo larry ellison is taking a pay cut. the value of ellison's pay package dropped 18% this fiscal year to more than $78 million. that's after oracle missed internal financial targets and ellison turned down his annual bonus. ellison was the highest paid ceo in the united states this year. and emirates team new zealand will try once again today to win the america's cup. they are still one win away as they have been since wednesday. in yesterday's first race, they were leading with just a little more than a mile to go, but the race was scrapped because a time limit had been reached. oracle team usa came back and won the second race. they trail emirates team new zealand 8-3. >> it's about our country getting behind our boys! predicted, they say shops and restaurants along the waterway is seeing an increase in business. racing is set for 1:15 this afternoon. could be a big weekend for netflix. house of cards is nominated for nine emmys at tomorrow's ceremony, including best drama. it's the first time a program that airs exclusively online has competed against network and cable programs. house of cards is also nominated for best actor for kevin spacey and best actress for robin wright. parents near sacramento whose children play football are complaining about a sportsmanship rule. the northern california federation has a mercy rule to prevent teams from winning by large margins, but some parents say it's doing more harm than good. home video shows a player slowing down with the football so he actually doesn't score. however, he risked injury when an opponent tried to tackle him grabbed his collar. >> now they are afraid their coaches are going to get

four new oil spills in colorado have put cleanup efforts on hold for now. the spills were discovered yesterday in flood-covered oil fields. authorities say it could take months, even years to recover from this deadly and disastrous storm.

roads, sewers, bridges, and hundreds of homes were all destroyed. >> when i stand there and watch those people come off those helicopters and realize what they have been through and what they are going to go through, i can't help but get emotional at times. >> the government has approved $8 million in federal homeowner assistance. some officials say most people will only receive a couple thousand dollars from fema for temporary housing. another 20 bay area volunteers are headed to colorado this morning to help with the thousands of people affected by the flooding. they will be joining in the 42 volunteers already working there in the state. they will help provide food, shelter and relief supplies. well, time now, 7:24. we've got some rain in the forecast today for this last day of summer, but it doesn't look like rosemary, it's going to last long? >> yeah, it will be with us for the morning hours. i know with have soccer games out there today. the a's are playing this afternoon. yes, we do have the possibility of just passing showers, with

partly to mostly cloudy skies. then by the second half of the day, i'm thinking around dinner time, you'll see sunshine before the sun sets in the 7:00 hour. this is actually the second round. areas like petaluma and santa rosa picked up 0.2-inch with a little rain that moved through last night. this is the next round. you can see around eureka, santa rosa -- i mean redding. not sure why i said that! reporting light rain this morning. it's coming our way. i do see a few scattered showers perhaps in the guerneville area, perhaps windsor. this is sliding south. so for today, right about midmorning, by 10:00 or so, we're looking at this rain moving in around areas of the north bay and you could see anywhere from a quarter inch to perhaps half inch of rain with this system. it's going to begin to slide to the south by 10:00, 11:00 and then into san jose by 11:00, 12:00. then for the afternoon, by 2:00

or 3:00 i'm thinking it's moving out and we're drying out. anywhere from a tenth of an inch to quarter inch of rain expected for most of the bay area and less than that south of san jose. the extended forecast here, temperatures continuing to cool. we're in the low 60s this morning. for the afternoon, low 70s inland. upper 60s around the bay. 60s along the coast. first day of fall arrives tomorrow and we're warming up with partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies and the warming trend will continue into your back-to-work monday. i'll have a detailed look at the radar and your temperatures, coming up. well, the oakland a's could clinch the american league west title as early as today. the magic number to clinch is now 2. that means if they win this afternoon and the texas rangers lose tonight, the a's will be your a.l. west champs. it was a big win for the a's last night, as they take on the minnesota twins. cespedes putsoninto the bleachers, making it 11-0 a's. chris young rips one to third. escobar makes a nice play

. it is the largest volunteer effort of its kind in the nation, why thousands of people are headed to bay area beaches right now. >> welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. thousands of volunteers are picking up trash at beaches

across the area. christian captain live for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning guys. the effort just about to get underway here in san mateo. we're at the volunteer center. you can see trash bags and gloves, all the stuff volunteers are going to need to pick up trash here along the coastline, specifically here in san mateo. we're joined by rock san murray. if we could talk for just a moment about the significance of this and the importance really of taking care of the bay and taking care of the california coastline. >> it is important. we want to keep the shorelines clean, we want our waterways clean. we want to enjoy these parks. they're beautiful. the sunrise is gorgeous. we want to keep it as clean as possible. last year we had about 950 to close to a thousand volunteers come out on this date. this is the largest single volunteer day in the state of california.

so what we want to do is get as many people out to volunteer in all the locations. this is just one, and we certainly want you to come down here. we have doughnuts and coffee and bagels. we also encourage recycling and reuse. we want to see people with recycled water bottles. as many things as we can do to protect our environment we need to do. it's our obligation as good stewards of the environment. >> a big effort focused on cigarette butts. >> they're the largest number 1 polluter of our waterways followed by plastic bags. whatever we can do to stomp those auto. out. >> the last thing is if people aren't in the san mateo area but them to get involved around the bay area, what can they do this morning? >> you can check the california coastal cleanup web site. they list every single location in the state of california that you can go to. there's one in every community. we held one just 3 miles up, we have one at coyote point.

remains safe. firefighters estimate containment will occur on october 1st. police say a shooting at the courthouse in pittsburgh may have been an accident. no one was hurt when two shots were fired yesterday morning at the ann son justice center. the gun may have gone off when a man tried to retrieve a weapon hidden in the bushes near the courthouse. >> we don't know how that shotgun got there. it's not safe to have any firearms out in the public like that. and we don't know why it was there. >> the suspect fled in a chevy suburban. anyone with information on the shooter's identity is asked to contact pittsburgh police. a request to delay the sentencing of convicted serial killer joseph naso has been denied. the 79-year-old requested delay until next year. he's representing himself and said he needed more time to prepare legal documents. the judge denied that request and set sentencing for november 8th. people that mauled a martino boy may have attacked

another child. the contra costa times reports the child of the dog owner was bitting during the attack. kill born has undergone several surgeries and lost part of his ear. an appeals board is scheduled to decide thursday whether a dog and another pit bull will be euthanized. smartphone robberies are on the rise in the city of berkley. smartphone robberies at night were up 35% in the last six months. nearly 180 people reported being robbed for their phones. to curb the increase in property theft, the police department has deployed officers on bicycles downtown and along telegraph, both busy areas where thousands of students pass daily. a frenzy over apples new iphone took an ugly turn in southern california. >> get out of the way. ! oh, boy. police say two men were arrested after getting into a fight outside the apple store in pasadena. more fights broke out at that same store later in the day

when a man left with several iphones. he hired homeless people to wait in line and buy the phones and they started fighting with him because they said they weren't being paid enough. here in the bay area, the lines did stretch around the block at the apple store on chestnut street. most people were trying to get their hands on the new gold colored iphones. but supply for that phone very limited. online the gold iphone sold out in 30 minutes and they are not expected to be in stock again until october. and many people want the new iphone 5s because of its fingerprint technology, but do you really need a finger to unlock it. coming up, why humans aren't the only ones who have the secret touch to open those phones. steve job's child home may become a historical landmark. the los altos historical commission is weighing whether to make job's former home on chris drive a protected

historical site. supporters say the loss altos home is significant because it's where jobs and steve wozniak built the first apple computers. at community meeting on the proposal is scheduled for 7 p.m. monday at lows altos city hall. 7:36. lots of people have outdoor plans whether it's watching a baseball game, cleaning up the coastline, and so rosemary they may not be all excited about the rain in the forecast on this last day of summer. your, we will need to keep that umbrella handy. although this morning we're waking outer loop partly cloudy skies in some areas. i am seeing that rain move our way and eventually it's going to cross over the bay area. it's beginning to pull into parts of the north bay. first a live shot there, a beautiful shot over the oakland estuary and into san fransisco. you can see in the background you can also see a mix of low clouds. sfo reporting delays because of those low clouds. some arriving flights are delayed by about an hour. so scattered showers in the forecast for today, first let's take look at this system. that again is going to be

moving across california as we get into our saturday. areas like redding crescent city, eureka reporting rain. as i slide in close, this is where i'm seeing some rain perhaps in our area. areas right around windsor, sebastopol, beginning to creep into santa rosa. you may have light showers and this is going to be sliding south. if i pull back just a little bit, that's line. see this line here, i'm going to show you this futurecast model and how it moves across our area for today. picking it up for you this morning, 8, 9:00 it's over the north bay, perhaps along the coastline. as we get into 10, 11:00 it's moving over the central bay. getting ready to slide into san jose by 11:00. by noontime it's beginning to pull out. we will be partly cloudy by i think 2, 3:00 we're clearing it out. notice we're even seeing breaks here. perhaps mostly sunny skies for the second half of our afternoon. this will set the stage for the

possibility possibility of maybe a thunderstorm developing over the north bay. around dinner time we're pretty much done, a little bit of moisture here. notice we've got some moisture over the rim fire. so that could be some good news there as well. right now temperatures low 60s in napa, san rafael, 59 in hayward. these numbers a lot warmer than where we started yesterday morning with the clouds in place, and we are just sort of in that warm sector of the storm. by the afternoon temperatures cool for this time of year. we're talking mid to upper 60s around the bay. low 60s70s around the peninsula. your extended forecast showing you by tomorrow fall arrives at 1:44 on sunday afternoon, if you didn't know, temperatures will be warm. we're looking at temperatures rebounding back into the upper 70s to perhaps a few 80s out there for our inland cities, low 70s around the bay. 60s along the coast and then the warming trend will continue into monday. we do fall off on tuesday,

wednesday, still a good looking forecast as we start next week. i'll have a look at your lunchtime numbers coming up. rain is falling in the north bay and that could affect the grape harvest in the wine country. the threat of rain brings the risk of rock and mildew. that happened two years ago when 2 inches of rain fell in october ruining scores of grapes at the end of the harvest. >> i think we're going to have an amazing vintage. we're farmers so it causes another hiccup if you will. we're all ready for it. >> some wineries pick grapes that are especially sensitive earlier to avoid the rain. we are learning more about why police were called to a texas applebee's after two children misbehaved. eli gow says his family was asked to leave an applebee's because his children were "overly active." he says a sheriff's deputy confronted the family and gave them a warning for criminal

welcome back, this is just a glorious shot here, a sweeping view from emeryville across the bay. you can see low clouds there, a mix of sunshine and scattered showers in the forecast. it's true. i'll have a weather time line for you coming up. more information is coming out about the mass shooting in chicago that wounded a 3-year- old boy. police talked to several people about the attack but have yet to make any arrests. investigators now say they blame the shooting on a dispute between rival gangs. witnesses say the gunmen fired at least 16 shots at a pickup basketball game in the city's south side. while all the victims are expected to survive, the boy was shot near the ear, and the bullet exited his cheek. this country should have a ban on assault weapons and high

capacity magazines like the ones used in this event. it's common sense. >> police are reviewing surveillance video and think there could be as many as three suspects. now while the numbers of homicides in chicago are down 22%s when you compare the numbers to this time last year, statistics also show that chicago has replaced new york as the homicide capital of the world. thousands of people in california have not received their unemployment checks due to a computer problem. the sacramento bee reports check checks for 185,000 people did not go out on time due to problems updating the state's computer system. hundreds of employees will work on the problem over the weekend, but it's still not clear when it will be resolved. california's unemployment rate rose for the second month in a row despite big job gains. the unemployment rate was 8.9% in august. that's up from 8.7% in july.

the state did add more than 29,000 payroll jobs, one of the largest job gains in the nation. the unemployment rate may be rising because more of the long- term unemployed are looking for work as the economy slowly improves. unemployment rates are falling in the bay area. marin county had the lowest unemployment rate in august. the unemployment rate in san fransisco is at 5.6%. it may be harder to get a part-time job over the holidays this year. target is planning to hire 70,000 seasonal workers this year but that's down from 88,000 a year ago. discount chain says it plans to offer more hours to permanent employees instead of hiring temporary workers. thousands of people at blackberry could have out of the job. the company will cut its work force by 40% by the end of the year. that's about 4500 jobs. blackberry has failed to jump start sales despite releasing new phones and software in

january. the company shipped 2.7 million smartphones running its new operating system during the quarter that ended june 1st. apples latest iphone can be unlocked by your dog. the iphone 5s features a fingerprint scanner so a minnesota man decided to see if his dog could unlock his phone, and he says it worked. as you can see here in this video, the man's phone recognize's his dogs paw. it also works for cats. if you think your iphone can do just about anything, how about the cases that you slip them in, two new iphone cases can actually be used for self- defense. one is even a stun gun. the yellow jacket delivers 650,000 volts of electricity with the press of a button. spray tech also sells a case that comes with pepper spray. the inventor says he came up with the idea when his daughter went away to college.

bridge. right now only those yellow plastic tubes divide north and southbound traffic. the district has been considering a median barrier for about 15 years to reduce head-on collisions. the movable concrete and steel barrier is expected to cost about $26 million. the bridge district says it may have to raise tolls to pay for it. it is scheduled to be installed in october of next year and will require closing the bridge for about 52 hours. today is move in day for freshmen at santa clara university ahead of the fall quarter which starts next week. and no parking signs have been posted in the curb area near the dorms in preparation for that student move in day. >> everyone's coming back this weekend. fun seeing everyone but all the freshmen move in tomorrow. that's a fun day to welcome them and show them a good time. >> santa clara police have been preparing for what is traditionally a busy weekend for parties, so for the past few days officers have been handing out these fliers to

students and residents living near campus to outline frequent violations related to parties. those include as you might imagine noise and alcohol. they even make note not to leave furniture. or beer pong tables unattended in the front of the property. there's a new development involving the story of a former los angeles raiders player who had his vacation home trashed. a couple hundred teens broke into his upstate house on labor day weekend and threw a keg party and caused $20,000 in damages. they posted photos online and that's how holloway found about the damage. he found out their names and posted them on the web site. holloway invited warrants to help clean the home. a transgender teenager in southern california has made history. cassidy lin campbell was named marina high school's new homecoming queen. cassidy was born a boy but has

been living as a teenage girl for the past three years. she faced some negativity from some students but the school says it's proud of the way people voted. >> i am so proud to win this not just for me but for everyone out there. >> campbell says she was fighting for transgender teens across the nation. her next step is to become more active in the lgbt community and fight for equality. let's head over to rosemary as we talk about that green on that screen behind you. >> yes, and if we look to the north of us, we can see plenty on that screen and a lot of that coming our way. let me show you storm tracker 2. you can see the bay area generally dry at the moment, but, yes, this is coming our way. i do see a few sprinkles over the north bay. north bay will get the highest amounts of rain. we're talking a quarter inch to half inch for parts of the north bay. if you're along the central

bay, a few 100ths san jose south a few 1/100. let's take a closer look at where we may have a few light scattered showers over bali in that case. it stretches across areas moving into petaluma and santa rosa to the north, a few light scattered showers for you. the time frame here looks to be between 8 and 9:00 over the north bay sliding into the central bay by about 9, perhaps into 10:00. and then by 11:00 it should be in your neighborhood if you're in the south bay. here's a look at your extended forecast, want to focus here on today for just a moment. temperatures will continue to cool, cooler than yesterday. low 70s in the forecast for our inland cities. low 60s for the coast. partly to mostly cloudy skies this morning. as we get into the noontime, the showers are now going. we've got passing showers for the first half or your day. by 3:00 in the afternoon those showers are winding down. we're turning partly cloudy once again over parts of the north bay with that clearing and in the afternoon heat we

september 21st. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. last day of summer here. let's get right over to rosemary and rosemary rain in the forecast. >> you're right, and it has already started over parts of the north bay. let's take a look at the system that will eventually bring all of us the possibility of some rain. it's going to be sliding across california, and already this morning if we get in just a little closer i'll show you where a few light scattered showers may be falling over petaluma. may have wet roads along highway 101 through santa rosa, and i'm tracking a little wet weather in the area near west college avenue. north baguettes it first. it is sliding south. i will have the best chance for it when it will be arriving to your area coming up in just a few moments. happening now the possibility of rain isn't slowing down the country's largest coastal cleanup efforts. ktvu's christian captain is in san mateo, just one of the many places people will be picking up the trash this morning. >> reporter: good morning those

cleanup effort, already underway here in san mateo. we have a father and son team over here working hard to clear up this area. last year they had about 950 volunteers and they are expecting close to a thousand today, and they'll be targeting trash all along the waterfront. volunteers are signing in, getting gloves and bags together. they cleared everything from fishtanks to vacuum cleaners. one of the most common items that volunteers report finding is jet butts. some groups are pushing for a fee on cigarettes to help pay for cleaning them up. >> cigarette butts are the largest number 1 polluter of our water ways followed by plastic bags. whatever we can do to stomp those out, we need to get butts out of the oceans. >> this is a statewide effort. if you want to get involved check out ktvu.com to find out where you can get involved in the cleanup in your area. we will update you throughout the morning about what they're finding out here in san mateo. last year they found fishtanks,

vacuum cleaners, even a 1962 dodge convertible if you can believe it. we've already seen them pull out a tire. we've heard about pipes out here. again, those cigarette butts one of the number one problems. we will continue to update you on what they find out here and up and down the coastline throughout the weekend. we're live in san mateo, christian captain ktvu channel 9 news. belmont police are looking for whoever vandalized an elementary school campus. police centeses these pictures of the some of the graffiti. the vandals struck late wednesday night. several outbuildings, tables and playground equipment were tagged. fox elementary had just remodeled its campus this summer. two boys with suspected of shattering car windows a w a bb gun on a busy san jose freeway. at least a dozen cars in the area were hit wednesday night during rush hour. accompanied by his parents a 15- year-old came forward and confessed to the shootings.

officers say he also implicated an 11-year-old friend. >> how he told his parents or how the parents said wait a minute and we don't know but the mere fact is that at some point the 15-year-old said enough is enough. i've got tomentcome clean. >> they could face felony vandalism charges. this case is still under investigation because there could be other victims. oakland police tell us side show crack downs are going to be a priority especially on weekends. officers say one driver who deliberately rammed into two police vehicles is going to face a felony charge of assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon. this side show took place at 90 90th and mac arthur between 1 and 2 in the morning last saturday. officers responded quickly to calls reporting that incident. you can see them coming into this video. there they are.

they tried to pull that car over and stop the driver. when they stop -- and you can see them here. what you don't see is the driver putting the car in reverse and ramming into those two police cars. he gets out of his car, tries to leave the scene but officers take him into custody. we did and police how often sideshows take place. >> it's a random thing where it pops up, shows its ugly face and kind of goes away. we have to just do continuous enforcement out here. >> things did get rowdy as police took that man into custody. they say bystanders actually threw bottles at those officers. police say no one was hurt during the incident. officers say they will be joined by the california highway patrol this weekend as they crack down on those side shows. police are searching for the driver who hit and killed a pedestrian in east oakland. a man pushing a car was hit by another driver before 8 last night on international boulevard. the victim's identity has not been released. the san fransisco 49ers say

its young defensive star aldon smith will play tomorrow despite his arrest on dui and marijuana charges. this is the mug shot of the 23- year-old. he turns 24 next wednesday. police say his pickup truck went off the road and hit a tree in the front yard of a home in san jose's silver creek neighborhood. skid marks could be seen on the curb. the tires spun so long they left a pile of burnt rubber. witness says they found smith hunched over the steering wheel. when they knocked on his window he raised his head and asked them what had happened. >> i see the smoke come out from the car, but he didn't know, and the engine still working. >> the wheels kept digging into the ground right? >> yeah, but he didn't know. i think he sleeping. >> the tires dug a hole in the woman's yard. smith was arrested and posted bail. he did attend 49ers practice in santa clara yesterday

afternoon. >> disappointed and, you know, felt like, you know, he needs to go to work, face his teammates and, you know, soldier through it. >> he's got his head on straight. i think, you know, sometimes stuff just happens. you know, if everybody went looking through everybody's past you'd find some stuff on everybody. >> al don smith was arrested last year in miami on a dui charge which was reduced to reckless driving. he also faces a civil lawsuit for a shooting at his home in which he was also sustained minor stab wounds. the nfl will review this latest incident. he could be suspended under the league's substance abuse policy. the 49ers launched a partnership with mother's against drunk driving. the head of the bay area chapter hopes there will be a long-term benefit from this case. >> i think that the note rye tee of these players bring it is more to the forefront than it does the general population. what's important to note is that drunk driving can happen to absolutely anyone.

partly to mostly cloudy skies, the rain looks to be tapering off already. we're clearing out. the system is now moving to the east and the south. but i believe the possibility of unsettled weather over the north bay may bring maybe a pop- up thunderstorm. that means the brief downpour maybe some thunder and lightning we'll be tracking that. also want to point out towards the sierra. if you're traveling to the sierra, about 7500 feet you don't want v to worry about getting over the path. this possibility of rain may be good news. temperatures right now, relatively mild. 59 in san fransisco, low 60s in napa. 64 in livermore and for the afternoon, it will be cool. 60s to low 70s. 73 for areas around livermore. 67 in oakland. low 60s in pacifica and chances are will be a little breezy behind this storm. as we get into tomorrow, we're dry. autumn arrives at 1:44 in the afternoon under partly cloudy skies. low 70s around the bay, 60s

know why the federal government has allowed previous mergers but blocked theirs. the airlines say they're planning to ask a judge to order the justice department to turn over documents about four previous murders between 2005 and 2011. the trial is scheduled to begin in november on the government's lawsuit against the merger which would create the world's largest airline. people who fly on allee i can't allegiant airlines could run into delays. they were forced to delay half its fleets. it used to be safety checks were done once every three years. new guidelines call for an inspection every year. allegiant air was not in compliance. >> i'm a very patient person, and i'd rather be on the ground where it's safe than in the air where it's not. >> the inspections are causing delays and cancellations across the country including here in oakland. the airport tells us all allegiant airlines flights are grounded for the day and they are working on getting passengers on to other airlines.

there's new information this morning about how close the united states came to a nuclear disaster. a declassified document shows the air force almost detonated an atomic bomb over north carolina back in 1961. two hydrogen bombs were aboard the b52 when it went into a tail spin and crashed. four safety mechanisms kept one of those bombs from going off. three of the mechanisms failed on the second bomb and only a low voltage switch kept it from exploding. it was 260 times more powerful than the atomic bomb. they may have to -- the air tanker could be scrapped from the military. according to congressman 27 of the air air forces 59kc10s, that scrap has been a consideration but it said it would not comment on how the move would impact the airmen at the base until a final decision is made. in this morning's weekly

federal agencies would not be funded and be forced to stop operations. many federal employees would be out of work. there is further outrage this morning in connection to the navy yard shooting. the head of the it consulting company that employed the gunman has sent an e-mail to the navy offering his own services to improve security. the associated press reports the e-mail stunned navy officials still dealing with monday's rampage that claimed the lives of 13 people including the gunman aaron alexis. in the e-mail the i. t. head offered his condolences but then goes on to lay out his work experience and the services he provides that could help improve security for the military contractors and civilians. police are asking for the public's help in finding the killer involved in a deadly shooting in san jose. they've released this picture of 23-year-old shawn moore. he's been named the suspect in the murder of ramon garcia. surveillance video captured the shooting that happened in the afternoon last month in a parking lot on 3rd and east

julian streets. garcia leaves behind six children. sworn in and ready to roll on to the streets of oakland. >> and the 167th oakland police academy class graduated today. 36 men and women will start patrolling some of the most violent streets this weekend. they graduate on the same week the federal government awarded oakland a grant to hire more offices. city leaders say the department is understaffed and the new officers say they're ready to fight crime in the city. >> there's constant action. there's plenty to do in the city, so i'm just looking forward to contributing to making the city safer. >> i think the key to anything is building a relationship with people and being genuine and being real. >> the officers will start patrolling next saturday as they begin 16 weeks of field training. more trouble for people in colorado with another obstacle delaying rescue efforts. >> and a new medical theory

coastline right now. a lot of volunteers out here working on getting as much debris, garbage, trash out from the bay as they possibly can. last year they had about 950 volunteers out here. this year they're hoping to top a thousand. we're joined by one of those volunteers, barbara dena are, do. you said to me earlier this is not your first year. how many years have you been coming out here? >> at least four or five. it is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and to do something great for our environment. >> and you're out here not alone but you're with a group. past part of an organized effort. that's when a lot of people are doing. who are you with? >> our elementary school, park side elementary in san mateo is here today. >> what are the kids finding so far. what have they seen? >> my daughter came up with a tire, lots of cigarette butts unfortunately someone just pulled up a bike so the effort has just started. there's still plenty of time for everybody to come out and

support us. >> what motivates you to come out on a saturday morning? you could be at home but instead you decided to come out here and pick up trash. >> i love the environment and love the animals and i want to see everything stay alive. >> barbara good luck this morning, enjoy, have fun clearing out the bay. there should be a lot of interesting stuff coming up. again, you heard one of the most common items that people are finding out here, cigarette butts. that's an ongoing problem. that's what one of the organizers told me that cigarette butts is the number one item they find on the beach. they are also looking to possibly impose a fee. that's one of the ideas that they want to do is impose a fee on cigarettes so that it can help pay for the cleanup of those cigarette butts from along the waterfront. there is still time for you to get involved. check out ktvu.com to take a look at areas where you can volunteer if you do want to get involved. we are live here in san mateo, christian kafton ktvu channel 2 news. firefighters say it will take ten days before one of the largest fires in california history is contained. the rim fire has burned nearly

257,000 acres in and around yosemite national park. 20 miles per hour wind gusts and low humidity have made the job difficult. flames are creeping along that are reach high elevation forests. firefighters now estimate containment will happen on october 1st. light rain will be falling in the north bay today and that could affect the grape harvest. the threat of rain brings the risk of rot and mildew. that's what happened two years ago ruining scores of grapes at the end of the harvest. >> i think we're going to have an amazing vintage. we're farmers it just causes another hiccup if you will. we're all ready for it. >> some winery picked grapes that are sensitive to rot earlier than planned to avoid

well. as we get into the north i'm seeing it over parts like petaluma, santa rosa, novato at times. it's very widespread and scattered. it's moving in closer to the peninsula, so right off the coastline we're seeing some of this. and as you get around areas near sears point pushing into the canyon in the next few minutes. for the afternoon i think we will continue to see this rain migrate to the south, and parts of the north bay you'll be clearing out for the earlier part of the day. let me show you what i mean. we've got the rain here over parts of the north bay. by 9, 10:00 it's sliding south. we will continue over areas around fairfield and to the east along the peninsula entering into the south bay by 10, 11:00 or so. and then by the afternoon, this is moving out. but take a look. it's 11:00 in santa rosa. you're mostly cloudy, but the rain is moving out of your area. by lunchtime it's moving into areas around santa cruz. by 1:00 we're clearing out. we're drying out. for the second half of the day

get back to work on monday, notice temperatures continue to warm falling off a bit tuesday, wednesday, but comfortable weather in the extended forecast. back to the desk. police say a shooting at the courthouse in pittsburgh may have been an accident. no one was hurt but two shots were fired yesterday morning at the justice center and a window was shattered. police say that gun had gone off when a man tried to retrieve that weapon. it was hidden in the bushes near the courthouse. >> we don't know how that shotgun got there. it's not safe to have any firearms out in the public like that. and we don't know why it was there. >> and that's what they're trying to figure out. take a look at that chevy suburban. they believe that the person who was holding that gun left in that vehicle. anyone with information is asked to contact pittsburgh police. a request to delay the sentencing of convicted serial killer joseph naso has been denied. yesterday 79-year-old naso requested delaying the sentencing hearing until next year. he is representing himself and said he needed time to prepare legal documents. the judge did deny that request

and sentencing is set for november 8th. a pit bull that mauled a boy last month may have attacked another child. the contra costa times reports that the child of the dog's owner was also bitten during the attack on 10-year-old hunter kill born. kill born has undergone several surgeries and lost part of his ear. an appeals board is scheduled to decide thursday whether the dog and another pit bull in the home will be euthanized. smartphone robberies are on the rise in the city of berkley according to the semiannual crime report. smart robberies at night were up 35% in the last six months. 180 people reported being robbed for those phones. the police department has deployed officers on bicycles downtown and along telegraph avenue, both busy areas where thousands of students pass daily. fists were flying in the frenzy over apples new i iphones. >> get out of the way. >> police say two men were arrested after getting into fight outside an apple store in

pasadena. more fights broke out at that same store later in the day when a man left with several iphones. he hired homeless people to wait in line and buy phones. then they started fighting with him because they said they weren't being paid enough. here in the bay area things were much more peaceful. in san fransisco the lines did stretch around the block at the apple store on chestnut street. most people were trying to get their hands on the new gold colored iphones, but that supply was very limited. online that gold iphone sold under the in just 30 30 -- sold out in 30 minutes. people waiting in line in palo alto, this shows apple ceo tim cook. he appeared at the apple stores on university avenue and in the sanford shopping center. steve jobs' childhood home may be becoming a historical landmark. the commission is weighing

hundreds of people are going to compete in a swim and a 112- mile bike ride and a 22.6-mile run. it will take them few north shore to truckee and squaw valley. the san mateo county sheriff's office is going to take people on a virtual ride along. beginning at 4:00, sheriff's deputies will post their tweets during a swing shift, and you can follow them through the twitter accounts at smc sheriff and at smc dispatch. tweets will be posted with the hashtag smcvra. smcvra, this is the first virtual ride along conducted by the san mateo sheriff's office. the redwood city fire department is going to unveil the name of its new fire boat. the $1 million boat was funded by the homeland security grant and a naming contest was held for children in the city during the summer. there were more than 100 entries, but the city came out with a top 10 list. there will be a special ceremony today and the new name

will be unveiled. the community will have a chance to get a close up look at the new boat. thousands of people in california have not received their unemployment checks due to a computer problem. the sacramento bee reports checks for 185,000 people did not go out on time due to problems upgrading the state computer system. official says hundreds of employees will work on the problem over the weekend, but it is not clear when it will be resolved. california's unemployment rate rose for the second month in a row despite big job gain. the unemployment rate was 8.9% in august. that is up from 8.7% in july. the state did add more than 29,000 payroll jobs, one of the largest job gains in the nation. analysts say the unemployment rate may be rising because more of the long-term unemployed are looking for work as the economy slowly improves. unemployment rates are falling, though, in the bay area. marin county had the lowest unemployment rate in august at 5%. is a la know county had the highest, and the unemployment rate in san fransisco was at

5.6%. it may be harder to get a part-time job over the holidays this year. target plans to hire 70,000 seasonal workers. that is down from 88,000 a year ago. the discount chain says it plans to offer more hours to permanent employees instead of hiring those temporary workers. all right, well, apples latest iphone can now be unlocked by your pets. the new iphone 5s features that fingerprint scanner so a minnesota man decided to see if his dog could unlock the phone. there you see the demonstration there in this video. as you can see that man's phone did recognize his dog's paw. and dogs aren't the only four legged friends who can handle that sensor. tech crunch reports it also works for cats. if you think your iphone can do just about anything, how about the cases you slip them in. two new iphone cases can be used for self-defense. one is even a stun gun.

it's a lot of high energy and excitement. >> santa clara police have been preparing for what is traditionally a busy weekend for parties for the past few days officers have been handing out these fliers to students and residents living near campus to outline frequent violations related to parties, noise and alcohol. they even make note not to leave furniture, such as couches on the front porch or beer pong tables unattended in the front of properties. there is a new development involving the story of a former los angeles raiders player. retired offensive lineman brian holloway said a couple hundred teenagers broke into his house. they threw a keg party and caused $20,000 of damage. they decided to post photos of them online. that's how holloway says he heard about the vandalism. he then found out their names and posted those on a web site. several parents are now considering suing him for his actions.

holloway invited parents to help him clean the home for a picnic today for military vets. supporters of california's proposition 8 are joining the fight to overturn the state's transgender law. that law requires public schools to allow students to choose which rest rooms they use and whether to playboys or girls sports. the national organization for marriage says they don't think people support this law. they need more than half a million signature bus november 8 november 8th to get it on to next year's ballot. a transgender teenager in southern california made history. cassidy lynn campbell was named marina high school's homecoming queen. she was born a boy but has been living as a teenage girl for the past three years. she faced some negative for her nomination from students but the school says it's proud of the way people voted. >> i am so proud to win this, not just for me but for everyone out there. >> campbell says she was fighting for transgender teens across the nation. her next step is to become more

line of when it is going to move there coming up. happening now, thousands of volunteers are rolling up their sleeves to help clean up the bay area shorelines. christian kafton is live in san mateo with more on how these volunteers are part of the biggest cleanup effort in the nation. christian how are things looking out there? >> so far this morning we've focused a lot of our time on the waterfront. now we're going to switch things up and show you what some of those volunteers are collecting. some pretty gross stuff in there. there is everything from bottles, plastic pieces, plastic crates, some foam rubber. lots and lots of styrofoam, lots of cigarette butts. over here you can see three tires already collected in just the first two hours this morning here in san mateo alone. volunteers say the decision to come out this morning was an easy one. >> it's a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and to do something great for our environment. >> volunteers are working

collecting plastic bottles, paper, so far those tires, plumbing supplies, all kinds of stuff left in the bay. it is the biggest volunteering day across the state and san mateo is the single most popular location for volunteers to show up to help clear the coastline. one of the most common items volunteers report finding cigarette butts. >> cigarette butts are the largest number 1 polluter of our waterways, followed number 2 by plastic bags. whatever we can do to stomp those out we need to get butts out of the ocean. >> now it isn't all serious out here. there's lots of fun and games, and there's some competitions. one of the competitions is for "the catch of the day." that is the most unusual item people have pulled out. you can see a fishing net over here. if you stand through you can see there's all kinds of items lots of bottles a paint brush. we saw a young woman bring this huaca pipe in in the last 2 or 3 minutes. a lot of unusual items. not too hard to get involved. if you check out ktvu.com under

foot hole in the woman's yard. smith was arrested and posted bail. he did attend 9ers practice in santa clara yesterday afternoon. >> disappointed and, you know, felt like, you know, he needs to go work, face his teammates, and, you know, soldier through it. >> he's got his head on straight. i think, you know, sometimes stuff just happens. you know, if everybody went looking through everybody's past you'd find some stuff on everybody. >> al don smith was arrested last year in miami on a dui charge. he also faces a civil lawsuit for a shooting at his home which he sustained minor stab wounds. the nfl will review this incident. he could be suspended under the league's substance abuse policy. the 49ers recently launched a partnership with mother's against drunk driving. the head of a bay area chapter hopes there's going to be a long-term benefit from this case. >> i think that the notoriety of these players brings it more

to the forefront than it does perhaps the general population. what's important to note is that drunk driving can happen to absolutely anyone. >> smith has not commented publicly yet. he was not hurt in yesterday's incident but has been nursing a back injury from last sunday's game against seattle. animal control has launched an investigation after two dogs owned by raiders cornerback tyrone jones killed a chihuahua. >> the attack happened in jones' neighborhood in brechtwood. she was walking her chihuahua when two pit bull mixes charged the pet. the dogs are being quarantined until the investigation is completed. a pit bull may have attacked another child. according to the contra costa times the dog's owner also has a child who was bitten during the attack on 10-year-old hunter kill born. kill born has undergone several surgeries and lost part of his ear. an appeals board is scheduled to decide on thursday whether that dog and another pit bull

in the home will be euthanized. oakland police tell us side show crackdowns are a priority, especially on weekends. . offices say one driver deliberately rammed into two police vehicles recently and is now facing a felony charge of assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon. this side show took place at 90 90th and macarthur. officers responded quickly to the calls reporting the incident. >> the officers went in to full over the car. the car pulled over. the officers stopped. the car immediately immediate reversed. he intentionally rammed both cars trying to get way. he was able to get out but his car became immobile. >> bystanders threw bottles at the officers. police say no one was hurt during this incident. officers say they will be joined by the california highway patrol this weekend in their crackdowns on side shows.

belmont police are looking for whoever vandalized an elementary school campus. police sent us these pictures of some of the graffiti at fox elementary school. they say the vandals struck late wednesday night. several outbuildings, tables and playground quilt were tagged. fox elementary school had just remodeled its campus this summer. people who fly on allegiant airlines are going to run into delays. the las vegas based carrier was force today ground more than half its need fleet because it needs to inspect the plane's emergency slides. it used to be that tests were only done once every three years but new guidelines call for an inspection every year. allegiant air was not in compliant. >> i'm a very patient person, and i'd rather be on the ground where it's safe than in the air where it's not. >> the inspections are causing delays and cancellations across the country including here in oakland. the airport tells us all allegiant airlines flights are grounded for the day and they

are right now working on getting passengers on to other airlines. it's a wet start to the day for some giving ewe you a live look there into san fransisco. you can see the drops on the lens at this point. started out with partly cloudy skies over san fransisco. we have since clouded over and more rain is on the way. we have scattered showers over the north bay. in fact, over the -- in the overnight hours we have anywhere from 1 to 2/10 of inches of rainfall over areas like petaluma, santa rosa and more is falling at this hour. giving you a look at the system here, this line of rain is migrating to the south, and i think over the next half hour to hour we'll see it cross over the central bay and on into the south bay. this is where we're seeing it here. if i slide in just a little bit closer, just off the coastline, we have showers that will begin to move in in the next half hour or so. this has been where we have seen the rain thus far. areas like napa now reporting

light showers, but over petaluma and you can see marin getting closer in andened a the american canyon. just the north edge of the san pablo bay. i'm going to run you through the next few hours. this will be the best opportunity of seeing these showers across the area. the models are doing a great job of showing that rain over the north bay by 10:00. it's moving into the central bay and down into the south bay by about 11:00. now in the meanwhile, we're already clearing out a little bit over parts of the north bay. this afternoon clearing for the second half of the day could bring help to spark an afternoon thunderstorm. that's for the north bay. meanwhile i'm going to stop it at 1:00. i want to focus right here. we're clearing out and drying out in time for the a's game. this system is going to bring us a little bit of rain, and it's going to move out of here by dinner time. we have partly cloudy skies to enjoy and we're drying out, and the first day of fall tomorrow will be dry and you remember whatter. -- dry and warmer. how much rain are we going to

see, a few 1/100 over san jose, a tenth over the central bay and the farther north the more you're going to get, a quarter inch with a few isolated areas picking up more than that. today is going to be the coolest day we're a few degrees warmer than yesterday so relatively mild with 60s outside our doors. by the afternoon anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. upper 60s for oakland, 64 san fransisco, 71 for mountain view and in your extended forecast, again, scattered showers i think between now and perhaps noontime our best chance drying out for the second half of the afternoon. tomorrow the first day of fall, a little warmer on monday and then tuesday and wednesday looking just as nice. back to you. the oakland a's could win the division today. the magic number to clinch is now 2. that means if they win this afternoon and the texas rangers lose tonight, the a's will be the al west champs.

it was a big win last night as they took on the minnesota twins. bottom of the 2nd, cespedes warming up, a monster shot to left center reaching the flat lands of oakland. a's up 1-0. bases loaded and chris young -- the throw's short and everyone comes around to score. a's go on to win this one 11-0. last night the giants taking on the new york yankees in new york. pitcher andy pettitte announced his retirement before the game. 3rd inning, juan perez one to left. game tied at 1. that is all the giants would get. the yankees go on to win with a final of 4 5 to 1 because of alex rodriguez's grand slam. we will be ending mornings on 2 so early this morning for the game. taking months even years to recover.

welcome back. giving you a live look there over oakland this morning. mostly cloudy skies, low 60s outside your doors and the possibility of scattered showers for the first part of your day. and new this morning, we're going to get to unemployment in a second. we want to talk about kenya. at least 22 people have been killed in what officials say was a religiously motivated attack at a mall there. witnesses say a gunman told muslims to leave the mall and then set offhand grenades that opened fire on nonmuslims. a children's event was being held at the mall at the time of the attack. it's unclear how many of the victims are children. four new oil spills in colorado put cleanup efforts on hold for now. those spills were discovered yesterday in flood covered oil fields. authorities say it could take months or years to recover from

this deadly and disastrous storms. roads, sewers bridges and hundreds of homes were destroyed. >> when i stand there and watch those people come off those helicopters and realize what they've been through and what they're going to go through, i can't help but get emotional at times. >> the government has approved $8 million in federal homeowner assistance. some officials say most people will only receive a couple thousand dollars from fema for temporary housing. >> another 20 bay area volunteers are headed to colorado this morning. they will help the thousands of people affected by the flooding and they will be joining the 42 volunteers already working in the state by helping provide food, shelter, and relief supplies. rain is falling in the north bay and that could affect the grape harvest in wine country. wine makers say the threat of rain brings the risk of rot and mildew. that's what happened two years ago when two inches of rain fell in october and it ruined scores of grapes at the end of the harvest. >> i think we're going to have

led house republicans yesterday in a vote to defund obamacare. it was part of an emergency funding bill that would keep the government running after october 1st, which is the start of the new fiscal year. now, if no deal is reached, many federal agencies would not be funded and would be forced to stop operations and many federal employees would be out of work. there is further outrage in connection with the navy yard shooting. the head of the i. t. consulting company that em employed the gunman has sent an e-mail to the navy august his own services to improve security. the associated press reports the e-mail stunned navy officials dealing with the rampage that claimed the lives of 13 people. in the e-mail the i. t. head offered his condolences but then goes on to lay out his work experience and the services he provides that could help improve security for the military, contractors and civilians. police are asking for the public's help in finding the killer involved in a deadly shooting in san jose.

they have released this photo of shawn moore. he has been named the suspect in the murder of ramon garcia. surveillance video captured the shooting that happened in the afternoon last month in a parking lot on 3rd and east julian streets. garcia leaves behind six children. sworn in and ready to roll on to the streets of oakland. >> the 167th oakland police academy class graduated yesterday. 36 men and women are going to start patrolling some of the most violent streets starting next weekend. the new officers graduated on the same week the federal government awarded oakland a $4.5 million grant which will allow them to hire even more officers. the officers will begin 16 weeks of field training starting one week from today. two boys are want suspected of shattering car windows with a bb gun. the highway patrol says at least a dozen cars in the area were hit wednesday night during

rush hour. accompanied by his parents a 15- year-old came forward and confessed to the shootings. officers say he also implicated an 11-year-old friend. the two boys were released to their parents. they could face felony vandalism charges. smartphone robberies are on the rise in the city of berkley. according to the city's semi annual crime report, smartphone robberies were up 35 percent in the last six months. 180 people reported being robbed for their phones. to curb the increase in property theft the police department has deployed officers on bicycles downtown and along testify telegraph. apple's new iphone debut could be the largest yet. the line stretched around the block at the apple store on chestnut. most people were trying to get their hands on the gold colored iphone. online that gold iphone sold out in 30 minutes and they are not expected to be in stock again until october. apple's latest iphone can be unlocked by your pets.

analysts say the unemployment rate may be rising because more of the long-term unemployed are looking for work as the economy slowly improves. unemployment rates are falling in the bay area. marin county had the lowest unemployment rate in august. the unemployment rate in san fransisco is at 5.6. today is move in day for freshmen at santa clara university ahead of the start of the fall quarter which is next week, and check out those no parking signs. they're posted on the curb areas near the dorms. all those students are moving in today. santa clara police are preparing for what is normally a busy weekend for partying. >> when there's a new class that comes in there will be an increase in activity for a little bit. we're trying to let people know what to expect. >> officers say they were inundated with party and alcohol related calls during this time last year. stanford football team will play in front of another sold out crowd today at home.
