degrees. we'll take a look at the forecast highs in your neighborhood. i'll let you know when fire danger will be on the includes. we are following the developing news about a massive terrorist attack in africa. one of the victims is a uc berkley graduate. 26-year-old elaine deng posted a photo online of herself receiving treatment for facial cuts. right now she works as the manager for eat out kenya, a web site that helps visitors find restaurants in ya. kenya. a woman whose husband works for a u.s. agency was also killed. according to the latest numbers, 59 people are dead and at least 175 injured this. this morning israeli forces are joining in the fight to end the standoff. 10 to 15 militants with links to al-qaeda stormed yesterday.

the siege continues. >> to come to me because i couldn't just walk out anyhow. they shoot after all of us,. >> officials estimate the terrorists still have about 30 hostages. more than a thousand were freed since yesterday. some of the victims survived by hiding for hours in a basement. >> the u.s. is describing this terrorist attack as despicable. the white house and national security council released a statement that reads the perpetrators of this heinous act must be brought to justice, and we have offered our full support to the kenyan government to do so. this cowardly act against innocent civilians will not shake our resolve. new this morning, an accident on interstate 80 in san fransisco killed one person and injured two others. it happened late last night after 10:00. officers say the car crashed into a wall going westbound on the 5th street offramp. they say three people were inside that vehicle. so far there is no word on the condition of the surviving passengers and the cause of

that crash is still under investigation. police are investigating a double shooting in daly city that left one person in critical condition. the two victims were transported to san fransisco general hospital just after 8:00 last night. police say the two were shot in the broad moor area of daly city. their identities have not been released. the motive is under investigation. no arrests have been made. and happening today, a private memorial service will be held at the marine barracks in washington for the victims of monday's navy yard shooting. the 34-year-old gunman aaron alexis shot and killed a dozen people and wounded eight others. he was killed in a gun battle with authorities. the victims ranged in age from 46 to 73 and included civilian employees and contractors. the president and the first lady will attend that memorial which starts about 2 this afternoon our time. 4,000 people have been invited to the service. last night the president cited both the navy yard shooting and the ongoing violence in his hometown of

at 10:00 stay tuned for the packers and the bangles and following the game stay tuned for game day analysis on the ot. turning now to the possibility of another b.a.r.t. strike. both sides in this b.a.r.t. labor dispute are going to go back to the bargaining table tomorrow. the cooling off period does end october 10th. b.a.r.t. and its unions right now remain very far apart. workers say they're proposing a three-year contract with a 4.5% raise each year and increases in pensions. back andb.a.r.t. is offering a 4-year deal. they did go to merritt island to start training. this weekend brought rain to the bay area and snow to the sierra. a few inches fell yesterday in the mountains near tahoe. this is the first measurable snow since april. some cars did have to be turned around, flip-flops not great with snow. some people headed there from the bare area say they just

were not prepared. >> snowing on us, and so we thought we were going to be socked in for the night on the ridge, but here we are. as you can see this is all i've got. everything else is wet. >> ski resorts pretty happy about this. they say they hope the early snow is a sign of a good winter season to come. >> it is great to see. i don't know necessarily if it's going to stick. let's turn now to meteorologist mark tamayo. >> the weather is behaving like it should be. quite an interesting development yesterday in the sierra with the snow levels. they were supposed about 8,000 feet but some of the colder air gets transported to the surface and as a result snow down to 6500 feet. in the bay area we had the heavy downpours yesterday but today as we get ready for fall, some patchy fog out there. no raindrops to worry about for the second half of the weekend. we're talking about a warming trend. on the maps you can see some of the low clouds and fog developing in the wake of

yesterday's system. some leftover moisture out there forming some of the overcast. san jose reporting mostly cloudy skies, current temperatures are on the cool side. look at the 40s showing up in santa rosa, napa, san fransisco 555 and san jose checking in 53 degrees. rainfall totals from yesterday very impressive for any day but especially for this time. can see quite a few records to report in san rafael, oakland, that's downtown. san jose. for today morning cloud cover. fall begins this afternoon. tomorrow will be warmer. the extended forecast a dry weather pattern. some gusty winds that will boost our fire danger for the north bay hills and the east bay hills. talking about the a's game for this afternoon, lots of sunshine for today, the game forecast for later on today we have mostly sunny skies, winds around 12 miles an hour and temperatures around 70 degrees.

with some fog developing right now. coming up the timing of our next warning trend. a computer problem has delayed the arrival of a private company's new cargo ship to the international space station. orbital science says its capsule with l not pull up as a space station. the two orbiting vessels established direct contact but rejected some data. the company is working on a software repair and that could take up to two days. >> nba hall of fame basketball players are teaming up with current and former gang members in hopes of stopping the escalating violence in chicago. they took part in a second annual basketball for peace tournament. a chicago church put on the event and invited about a dozen nba stars. isaiah thomas persuaded two rival gang members to give each other a quick hug before tipoff. a gesture many players say they appreciated. >> in the community you've got to come together as a people. you got to try to unit and try

to realize that what we're doing to ourselves is digging ourselves in a deeper hole. >> chicago mayoral emmanuel wasn't given a warm welcome when he entered the gym. it followed a mass shooting. 13 people were wounded. an annual multistate bicycle ride turned deadly in new england. a car crossed the median and hit the group of bicyclists yesterday killing two people and injuring two others. all the victims were in their 50s and 60s. >> it was gruesome. i did walk up close enough to see if i could help and there were a lot of people trying to assist one of the victims but they weren't sure what to do because it appeared she was severely injured. >> a 20-year-old driver suffered minor injuries. police are not saying if they will seek criminal charges. this is the 40th year of the bike ride which follows the massachusetts, new hampshire, and maine coastlines. organizers say they hired extra guards this trip to ensure

safety. in afghanistan another insider attack has taken the lives of three u.s. troops. afghan military officials say it happened yesterday inside an afghan army base near the back stan border. the defense department says the shoo shooter was wearing a uniform and it's the 7th 7th attack this year. similar attacks have led to the deaths of eight other coalition soldiers compared to 62 soldiers last year. >> and syria has met its first deadline to avert a military strike from the u.s. an international monitoring group is pouring over syrian documents detailing its chemical weapons arsenal. a senior white house official says the obama administration is pleasantly surprised by the openness of that inventory list. the documents are the first step in a plan agreed upon by the u.s. and russia to remove syria's chemical weapons by the middle of next year. a statue honoring former south african president nelson mandela is in place in washington d. c. it was

unveiled outside the south african em bay embassy. for the past few months the 95- year-old has been fighting a lung infection. he was recently released from a south african hospital to be treated at home. the u.s. senate will meet this week to reject the republican plan to defund obamacare. lawmakers say they must agree to an emergency budget compromise by the end of the month to avoid a government shut down. here's how a possible shutdown could affect you. mail will still be delivered along with social security payments. however, new claims may not be processed, and payments could be delayed. core services will continue, but new filers may have problems with agencies be understaffed. >> the senate will be responsible that they will send us a bill which does keep the government open through december 15th but also has reasonable cuts in it, ones that we can both agree on.

>> the state department says it may stop issuing new passports and visas. taxes would be collected. but depending on the length of a shut down refunds may be delayed. hundreds of thousands of federal workers would also be furloughed without pay. a high ranking officer with the california democratic party has stepped down after posting an offensive message on social media. alan bower was the volunteer communications chair with the party. during a heated online exchange about president obama's health care law brower wrote may your children all die from debill debilitating painful and incurable diseases. he apologized for the statement and i resigned. one senator is giving the thumbs down to the iphone. he's concerned that that fingerprint system could put users at more risk for identity theft. he said t not that difficult

for criminals to get people's fingerprints since they're left on everything we touch. fingerprints never change. he says that could make it harder to protect the identity of consumers. apple has not commented. the price of gas could take a big dip in california by halloween. thanks to a light hurricane season and easing tensions in the middle east, experts are predicting gas prices will fall by up to $0.45 by the end of next month. take a look at where we stabbed in the stabbed -- where we stand in the bay area. in oakland and san jose, drivers are paying about $4 to fill up. a law designed to put parents' minds at ease during halloween could be dropped in southern california. the city of orange is considering tossing out a law that's designed to protect children from sex offenders, registered sex offenders in that city are legally required

california's coastal cleanup event is being called a huge success with 70% of the cleanup sites reporting, volunteers picked up more than 471,000 pounds of trash. an additional 30 pounds of recyclable materials were also collected. that makes a grand total of 251 pounds of trash removed from state's beaches. yesterday's clean up was the largest event and took place in 53 of the 58 counties. san fransisco is going to be reaching out to the city's gay and lesbian homeless community. the project will launch on october 7th. medical, dental, employment and housing services will be provided to participants. organizers say while the focus is on the lgbt community no one will be turned away. 29% of the city's homeless

over my head but god protected me until around 11. that is where i crawl until i end up my office and i locked myself inside. >> that is a survivor of a terrorist attack at an african shopping mall describing how she made it out alive. more than 24 hours after the initial attack there is still no end to the standoff. good morning and welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. there is a bay area connection to this developing story from kenya, 26-year-old elaine deng graduated from uc berkley in 2009. she was at the mall when those terrorists stormed in yesterday. now in this photo she posted online you can see she suffered cuts to her face but is otherwise okay. deng is currently the general manager for eat out kenya, a web site for people visiting

the country. just a short timing a kenya's president announced that military forces have cornered the terrorists in one part of that shopping mall. he estimates there are 10 to 15 terrorists but could not confirm reports of both male and female attackers. other officials say there are about 30 hostages still inside that mall. so far 59 people have been killed and at least 175 injured. a san fransisco sheriff's lieutenant is back in custody accused of violating his probation. vincent calvarese is scheduled to appear tomorrow morning. he violated his probation when he did not go to mandated sessions. he was taken back into custody last weekend. a man is behind bars this morning charged in connection with a hit and run crash that killed two women on labor day. police say they took 24-year- old danny coleman into custody in union city friday.

according to police on september 2nd around 3:15 in the morning coleman crashed into a toyota sedan after san jose police tried to pull him over. it killed 63-year-old carmen -- evidence that coleman was driving led to his arrest. he has been associated with a violent east palo alto street gang. the charges against him in that case were dropped. the oakland a's are closing in on the american league west division title for the second year in a row. ktvu christian kafton live outside the coliseum where fans are keeping their fingers crossed for a clinch today before the team hits the road for the last week of the regular season. >> yeah, there's a little a's fever out here last night, lots of excited fans. a big win last night against minnesota. you can see some of the workers started to show up for a day's work here at o.co coliseum.

the a's took on the minnesota twins yesterday blowing them out but the rangers pulled out a big win as well putting the host post season hopes off for one more day. they need to win one more or texas freeze to drop a game -- texas needs to drop a game. fans are saying they are confident that the a's will make it to the post season and they're hoping they'll make it a little further. >> i'm surprised they did good. this is two years in a row we've won the division. >> the final score is 9-1. >> not quite yet. today's game against the twins starts at 1:05 this afternoon. the rangers game starts at 11:00. a's fans will be watching both games. we'll be going in closer to o.co coliseum seeing if we can meet up with fans who are showing up early for today's game, maybe hoping to score some post season tickets. we will keep you updated about the a's and bring you all the information about the scores tonight at 5 and again at 10. certainly a lot of high hopes

for the a's going into today's big game. we are live at the coliseum, christian kafton ktvu channel 2 news. >> as for the san fransisco giants they were in new york yesterday, 3rd inning robinson cano with the single to left. ivan nova with a complete game shutout, the giants season enters its final week. yankees win 6-0. a major push to reduce the violence in one of san fransisco's high crime districts is set to get underway tomorrow. including several deadly shootings and home invasions. at noon tomorrow san fransisco city attorney and the supervisor for the bay view are expected to announce that they're calling a ground breaking federal grant that will help crack down on crime there. police have already sent in extra patrols to that neighborhood, n response to a heavy gang presence. and san leandro police are investigating damage to cars from a pellet guns.

police responded to reports of shots fired in castro and east 14th streets. they say officers found two cars with damage that may have been caused bay pellet gun or something similar. anyone with information is being asked to call police. the flooding in colorado is contaminated some of the tap water with e. coli. tests confirm the town of lyons which has been hit hardest by the flooding s the bacterium. the floods caused the contamination by taking out the sewer lines and septic systems. water has been turned off in the town of 2,000 people. the problem will be fixed before evacuated residents are allowed to return. the number of people missing due to the colorado flooding continues to decrease. officials say the number of unaccounted people has now dropped from 82 to 60. eight state highways have reopened but 13 of them remain closed. officials say an estimated 1900 homes have been destroyed and at least seven people have

died. >> after a fire you normally see a disaster recovery center set up and all the insurance companies come in and they help them out. and what i'm learning is very, very few people have flood insurance. >> fema says it has distributed more than $12 million in aid and about 60 bay area volunteers have flown out to help the victims. they tell the mercury news there must be a concerted effort to control erosion in the forest. they are worried that rains are going to rush down those hillsides burned by the fire. there could be heavy soil erosion and it could take a couple of decades for the area to recover. this past friday cal fire pushed back the containment date of the rim fire to october 1st. officials from a yosemite camp owned by the city of san fransisco are crediting firefighters for saving the facility. camp mather hosts families each

summer. the camp would have gone up in flames if it weren't for the crews setting a backfire days earlier. new this morning, accommodation for some of the first responders to thes a ya that crash. two south san fransisco firefighters million dollars received awards for heroism. a daly city firefighter was hailed as a hero. the first two firefighters went into the burning plane and pulled out victims. the third firefighter helped in the triage area to calm shaken passengers. happening tomorrow, a teachers union will file suit to keep city college of san fransisco shutting down. an accreditation commission is threatening to pull the school's certification next july due to charges of mismanagement and poor finances. tomorrow the california federation of teachers will announce that it's filing a lawsuit in san fransisco's superior court on behalf of

tactics that cause maximum damage. new this morning, an accident on interstate 80 in san fransisco killed one person and injured two others. it happened last night after 10:00. officers say the car crashed into a wall going westbound on the 5th street offramp. three people were inside the car. there's no word on the conditions of the surviving passengers and the cause is under investigation. police are investigating a double shooting in daly city that left one person in critical condition. the two victims were taken to san fransisco general hospital just after 8:00 last night. police say the two were shot in the broad moor area of daly city. their identities have not been released and the motive for the shooting is under investigation. no arrests have been made. and we are keeping an eye on the b.a.r.t. labor dispute with both sides set to go back to the bargaining table tomorrow. the cooling off period ends october 10th, and there is still a lot of work to be done. b.a.r.t. and its two major unions remain far apart. workers are proposing a 3-year contract with a 4.5% raise each

good sunday morning. 8:14. looking out towards san fransisco. one patch of cloud cover overhead. the laguna police department is mourning the loss of an officer this morning. a motorcycle officer was killed late last night after being hit by a pickup truck. the cause of that crash is under investigation. this is the department's first officer killed in the line of duty since 1953. and happening today a private memorial service is going to be held at the marine barracks in washington for the victims of monday's navy yard shooting. the 34-year-old gunman aaron alexis shot and killed a dozen people and wounded eight others. he was killed in a gun battle with authorities. the victims ranged in age from 46 to 73 and included civilian employees and contractors. the president and the first lady will attend the memorial which starts at about 2:00 this afternoon our time. 4,000 people have been invited to that service. last night the president

for the first time, san fransisco will be reaching out to the city's gay and lesbian homeless community. a project called lgbtq connect will launch on october 7th. medical, dental, employment and housing services will be provided to participants. organizers say while the focus is on the lgbt community no one will be turned away. the push comes after the latest homeless count revealed that 29% of the city's homeless population is gay. there is a naming contest underway for a public plaza near city college of san fransisco. that plaza will be located next to the muni bus terminal. construction is scheduled to begin in just about two years. it is designed as a place to

that shopping mall. he estimates there are 10 to 15 terrorists but could not confirm reports of both male and female attackers. other officials say there are about 30 hostages still inside that mall. 59 people have been killed and at least 175 injured. a uc berkley graduate is one of the injured who did manage to escape. 26-year-old elaine deng posted this new photo on her twitter page. that's her in the hospital surrounded by friends. she was at the mall when terrorists stormed it yesterday. deng is currently the general manager for eat out kenya, which is a web site for people visiting that country. a man who's in jail this morning charged in connection with a hit and run crash that killed two women on labor day. police took 24-year-old danny coleman into custody in union city. on september 2nd around 3:15 a.m. he crashed into a toyota sedan after san jose police tried to pull him over.

that crash killed carmen and 62- year-old christina deleone. evidence from the car that coleman was arriving led to his herself. he has been associated with a violent east palo alto street gang targeted in a massive federal indictment in 2009. the charges against him in that case were dropped. . san fransisco's sheriff's lieutenant is back in custody for violating his probation. vincent calvarese is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow morning. prosecutors say he has violated his probation by failing to appear at a court mandated domestic violence session. in 2012 calvarese who is gay was arrested for getting into a fight with an ex-boyfriend at golds gym. he was taken into custody last weekend. new this morning, accommodation for some of the first responders to the asiana crash last july. the examiner reports that two south san fransisco firefighter

channel 2 news. the san fransisco giants were in new york yesterday, 3 3rd inning robinson cano hits the rbi single to left, part of iva wi a complete game shutout. the giants seasons enters its final week. yankees win 6-0. the flooding in colorado has contaminated some of the tap water with e. coli. the town of lyons which has been hit hardest by the flooding has the bacterium. the floods caused the contamination by taking out the sewer lines and septic systems. water has been turned off in the town of 2,000 people. officials say the problem will be fixed before any evacuated residents are allowed to return. meanwhile the number of people missing due to the colorado flooding continues to decrease. officials say the number of them unaccounted people has now dropped from 82 to 60. eight state highways have also reopened, but 13 of them still remain closed. officials say an estimated 1900 homes have been destroyed and at least seven people have

died. scientists are worried that the actual damage of the rim fire isn't going to be known for years. they say there must be a really concerted effort to control erosion in the forest and are worried rains this winter are going to rush down those hillsides burned by fire. scientists say there could be heavy soil erosion and it could take a couple of decades for that area to recover. this past friday cal fire did push back that containment date of the rim fire to october 1st october 1st. officials from the yosemite camp owned by the city of san fransisco are crediting firefighters for saving that facility. camp mather hosts more than 1500 families every summer. the camp would have gown up in -- gone up in flames if it weren't for crews setting a backfire days earlier. with help from mother nature, team new zealand hopes today is finally the day it will win the america's cup. the races had to be canceled

p. lawrence. there were five people on board. at this time their status is unknown. a pickup truck and a car crashed into a ditch killing four young people and critically injuring three. this was pictured by chp. it happened before 10:00 last night on a rural desert road in los angeles county. officers say one of the vehicles ran a stop sign and broadsided the other. at least two of the victims were not wearing seat belts. investigators say the passengers appear to be in their teens and early 20s. a big push to reduce the violence in one of san fransisco's high crime districts is set to get underway tomorrow. there have been several deadly shootings and home invasions in the bay view hunters point neighborhood recently and at noon tomorrow san fransisco city attorney and the supervisor for the bay view are expected to announce what they call a ground breaking federal grant that will help crack down on crime there. police have already sent in extra patrols to the neighborhood in response to the heavy gang presence there. one person is still at
