lows, mostly 50s and 60s. mostly sunny is, it will be cooler, a little bit more of a breeze later on. upper 50s, low 60s. these are running a little bit above yesterday's readings, that's for sure. we had some very low readings in the north bay. this morning it's much, much warmer. the system won't do much for us. it will give some reason up in northeast california and the sierra nevada where they'll start seeing increasing clouds. sun and clouds, high clouds already getting into marin county, lake -- mendocino county, mainly upper 60s and low 70s south. >>reporter: steve, good morning. right now we're looking at the commute and it looks pretty good, better than my voice. traffic is moving along nicely. if you are driving at the toll plaza, westbound, as you get into the city, no major problems driving across the bridge. also this morning's commute is looking good in san francisco, northbound 101 approaching the 80 split. and if you're driving in livermore, let's go there, traffic on 580 westbound is going to be busy, but it's not stop and go just yet.

at 4:30, let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. topping our news this morning, a man in his 70s is dead after a crash in oakland. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge has more on why police believe the people responsible for the crash might have been fleeing a different crime scene just a few blocks away. good morning, alex. >>reporter: well, good morning. this was an innocent driver hit and killed by an suv that police believe was racing away from a shooting scene that had happened just minutes earlier. now, a sergeant did tell me a short time ago the victim in this case was an elderly man, believed to be 75 years old, from oakland. this deadly crash happened about 10:30 last night at church and bancroft right next to eastmont mall. the victim was driving a subaru station wagon that flipped over on its roof and police say a red suv broadsided the car. a sergeant told me that suv had two men inside who had possibly been involved in a shooting just minutes earlier. now, police think they opened fire on an empty suv that was

parked on the 11000 block of 82nd avenue. no one was hit by gunfire there. but while those two men were on the run, following the shooting, they slammed into that car with deadly results. the two men involved in the shooting crashed, both taken into custody and a sergeant did tell me this morning that it is possible that both of those men, now that they have been taken into custody and arrested will be facing some very serious charges for this crash, possibly the potential is manslaughter charges at the very least. we're live this morning in downtown oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. also this morning, san francisco police are investigating the deadly shooting of a 19-year-old man as he stepped off a muny train. it happened just before 10:00 last night near the corner of randolph and bright streets. police have not released the victim's name but say he was just on his way home from work when he was killed. so far there was no suspect information or details on what led up to the shooting, but police are talking to

witnesses. this morning investigators will return to the scene of a huge fire at a historic church in oakland. that started yesterday afternoon at the zion first church of god and christ near the west oakland bart station. last night ktvu news got an inside look at the damage. the 97-year-old church. the fast-moving flames gutted many cherished items that can never be replaced. bish op james watson pointed out one spot in the rubble where an old grand piano stood for years sphwhrvment that piano was probably 50 or 60 years old and it was donated by one of the ecial members here, -- early members here, probably about 70 years ago >> a huge fire, but fortunately no one was hurt. investigators are still looking for the cause, but say it does not appear to be suspicious. damage, though, estimated at about $900,000. new information this morning and conflicting reports about that deadly shopping mall takeover in kenya. kenyan authorities say they

have now secured the mall, but the islamist militant group behind the attack says hostages are still being held and that they are holding their ground against the government forces. we're also starting to hear horrifying stories from people who survived the attack inside the mall. >> the white shirt spoke first and he said we're from somali and we don't normally kill women and children, but then again you've killed our women and children. >> kenya's foreign minister says two or three americans were among those who took part in the shopping mall attack. she says the americans were young men, 18 to 19 years old of somali or arab origin and lived in minnesota and one other place in the united states. san francisco's twitter is playing a role in the mall takeover. islamic extremists and the kenyan military are using twitter to get information and ideology out to the rest of the world. tech analysts say twitter has

shut down several accounts used by the militants only to see them quickly replaced. time now 4:34. a 2-year-old girl is recovering after being hit by an suv in pittsburgh -- pittsburg. it happened at 6:00 last night on jimno avenue. police say the little girl ran into the street after a ball and the driver did not see her in time. the driver is cooperating. the girl was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. at timber point elementary school in discovery bay hundreds attended a candlelight vigil for a boy who was killed while riding his bike to school. [ singing ] >> friends, parents and teachers say the loss of 12- year-old burgess hugh, a seventh grader is devastating. he was hit and killed monday morning by a mother who had just dropped off her own children at school. those who knew burgess say his brilliant smile matched his

brilliant mind. >> he had such an amazing light and the only thing -- first thing all of us said is he would have been that student that it would have went on to cure cancer. he was so good in so many ways. >> to help the community heal, parents will hold another vigil tonight. some of burgess' friends plan to hold a bike ride in his memory this sunday. people who live in oakland's rock ridge neighborhood are concerned about a rise in crime. police say nine people, including a pregnant woman were robbed at gunpoint yesterday morning while waiting for casual carpool rides on hudson street and claremont avenue. some of the carpoolers were able to run away, but others lost backpacks and purses, containing wallets and smart phones. people who live in rock ridge say this is just the latest robbery in the area and that people have been held up leaving the bart station. >> he said to everyone give me your stuff. some people started to cry. a couple of people ran into the street. >> three suspects have been

detained in connection with the robbery. also this morning four people have been detained after a high speed chase on i-80 that reached speeds of 100 miles an hour. it started at 9:00 last night in elk grove after the chp tried to make a traffic stop. the driver kept going, hit another car before the chase came to an end in vacaville. the driver and three passengers were detained. no one was hurt. it's now 4:36. a pleasanton man is in a coma this morning after police say he was beaten unconscious right in front of his home. it happened at about midnight saturday on middleton place. according to the pleasanton patch, the victim is 51-year- old david lamont. police say a group of people, possibly teenagers were making noise outside his home when he went out to talk to them. when he did not come back, his wife went outside and found him badly beaten. a witness reports seeing a dark colored suv leaving the scene. police are asking anyone with information to contact them. the clock is still ticking

towards another possible bart strike next month. there are now just 16 days left until the 60-day cooling off period comes to an end. this morning negotiations are set to resume between bart and management -- bart management and unions. the schedule is now in place for those critical contract talks during these final weeks of the cooling off period. it calls for 10 of the remaining 16 days to be spent on negotiating the big issues of pay, benefits and healthcare. but the two sides are still more than $100 million apart and bart workers could walk off the job on october 11th if a deal is not reached. san francisco 49ers linebacker alden smith has officially checked himself into rehab. that's according to a report from the nfl. the team announced yesterday that smith would be placed on the nonfootball injury list. smith is expected to miss about a month of the football season. he played in sunday hea game against indianapolis colts after being arrested on friday morning for dui and possession

of marijuana. it's unclear if oakland raider's quarterback ter terrell pryer will be back on the field after suffering a concussion last night. it happened during the monday night football matchup against the broncos. prior was injured on the second raider's drive. he will undergo further testing today. cornerback tracy porter also suffered a concussion in that game. it was a rough game at candlestick park on sunday. not just for the 49ers who were upset by the indianapolis colts 27-7, but police are reporting at least two serious incidents of fans -- fan violence during the game at the stick. officers say a 15-year-old boy suffered a concussion during a fight with a 29-year-old man early in the game. two women were badly hurt during a fight after the game. the fan violence came despite increased stadium security. tonight the san francisco

giants will hold a special fundraiser to help pay for the medical costs of an injured fan, brian stow. the event is set to take place at at & t park tonight during the giants/los angeles dodgers game. $10 from every ticket will go toward the brian stow fund. stow was injured when he was brutally beaten at dodger stadium in los angeles opening day 2011. america's cup racing continues today after oracle team usa scored another win over emirates team new zealand. team new zealand was behind 8- 1. after yesterday's victory the score now stands 8-6. it was the fifth win in a row for team usa. oracle needs to win three more races to keep the cup. team new zealand only needs two -- actually, one more victory. racing is scheduled to continue today at 1:15. today is the 18th day of the america's cup, making it the longest in history and it's paying off for san francisco. we checked out some of the hotels yesterday, the hotel nitale on the waterfront only

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 4:45 right now. another woman has died in colorado's historic and devastating flooding. eight people have been killed in the flooding, six others are still listed as missing. nearly 2000 homes are also damaged or destroyed, along with more than 200 miles of state highways and 50 state bridges. yesterday vice president joe biden toured the flooding firsthand in a military helicopter. biden says he's pledging to help the people affected by the floods. he's also praising fema for its efforts in the recovery process. >> the stories that i've heard about the sacrifices

individuals made, about the sense of community, about how people pull together is pretty amazing. but not at all surprising. >> biden says fema and the red cross will continue to be funded, even if the government shuts down. so far nearly 16,000 people have applied for individual relief through fema. a brush fire in southern california is threatening several homes this morning. that fire started yesterday afternoon in the mountains above aszusa. it burned nearly 200 acres so far. evacuations were ordered late last night and 25 homes are currently under structure protection. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. today fire restrictions will be lifted in national forests across the state. officials say the decision is due to the arrival of cooler and wetter weather. even though the restrictions will be lifted, officials say hikers and campers need to be cautious about campfires, stoves and grills. tragedy in southern california after a 2-year-old

boy was killed while being attacked by as many as five dogs. the attack happened in the city of colton in san bernardino county last night. the dogs have been taken from the home. all the animals are believed to be pit bull mix. new information this morning the navy yard gunman lied on his security clearance information but was granted one anyone. when aaron alexis enlisted in 2012, he did not disclose he'd been arrested in seattle in 2004 for shooting the tires of a parked car. he also did not reveal a string of bad debts. president obama is scheduled to address the united nations general assembly just a little more than two hours from now. there has been speculation that president obama may meet on the sidelines of the u.n. gathering with new iranian president

hasan rouhani. rouhani is also scheduled to address the united nations today. he says he wants to introduce the real face of iran to the world, as a country that "loves culture and peace." struggling california homeowners have more than $18 billion in financial help from a national mortgage settlement in the last year. nearly $3 billion of that has gone to borrowers in four bay area counties, contra costa county received $951 million, the most of any east or south bay county. more than quors california families received reductions in what they owed on first and second mortgages. bay area drivers will see a big change in the chp. some bmw motorcycles are being replaced with harley davidsons. the oakland harlly davidson dealership has won a contract with the sheet and will roll out electric custom glide motorcycles next week. the contract calls for 121 motorcycles at more than $28,000 a piece. highway patrol officials say

there, snow level around 6,000, 6,500 feet. for us just a lot of high clouds, but it will usher in a little cooler air mass and that will also pick up the breeze. once this system goes in tomorrow, our wind will really crank up. monday was sunny and warm, as you know. today a change, it will not be as warm. a cooling trend on tuesday, we'll bottom out on wednesday and then it looks quiet and sunny. if you're in tahoe or reno like my good friend john borelli up there, increasing clouds, we'll say partly cloudy, but the wind will pick up over the ridges tomorrow, scattered showers, some snow. i think you'll notice the cooler weather and breezy on thursday. the main day will be on thursday. for us sun and higher clouds are already starting to work their way through the north bay, so higher clouds a little bit cooler here today, upper 70s for some, pretty close here, 70s and 80s, 60s, not as warm in san francisco after yesterday, 75 san jose, but upper 70s pleasanton and livermore, and temperatures today kind of cool down, we'll see a rebound in those temps and it will be warmer as we go into the weekend.

pam. >> thank you, steve. toys r us will hire 45,000 new workers for this year's holiday shopping season. it's about the same number of temporary workers it had last year. stores usually start hiring for the holidays now in september and have lined up their seasonal workers by mid october. the holidays account for about 40% of the store's annual earnings. retailers think this year will be tough, though, because consumer confidence is leveling off. today burger king is adding something new to its menu. it's calling them satis fries and boast they have 20% fewer calories than regular french fries. burger king says that's because the batter used for the crinkle cut fries absorbs less oil. the new kind of fries will cost about 25 cents more, though, than the standard french fries. time now 4:52. a big donation will soon be headed to uc-san francisco. the new donation will be used to help the living expenses pursuing doctorates in basic

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. time now 4:54. pg&e has been hit with another lawsuit linked to the deadly san bruno pipeline smoation. the suit was filed by a pg&e shareholder who say the executives pay themselves nice bonuses while they ignored pipeline safety issues. two claims, they put profits above safety and should pay for the fines, legal fees and other costs related to the explosion and fire that killed eight people in 2010. a petsmart employee in san carlos has been arrested after being accused of tipping off thieves when customers boarded their pets. it's a story you will only see on ktvu channel 2. deputies say 23-year-old ashley kirk has been tied to at least two home burglaries. he's accused of giving thieves

customers' addresses and dates when they would be out of town. >> we're still working it diligently and victims are being discovered along the way in our jurisdiction as well as others. >> the 24-year-old man and a 17- year-old have been arrested in connection with the case. investigators say they made the arrests after recovering stolen property from the burglaries. police in mountainview are looking for a man they say threw a woman to the ground at the shoreline amphitheater knocking her unconscious. the incident happened on september 14th. police say a 24-year-old woman tried to break up a fight when a man threw her down onto the pavement. she was knocked unconscious and taken to the medic tent. she did recuperate and went back to watching the hip-hop show that was going on at the time. that video was posted online. 4:56 is the time. plans to build a new arena for the golden state warriors in san francisco moving forward. the arena would provide a venue for the warriors, concerts and
