you are looking live at a big traffic problem in oakland right now. dozens of cars have flat tires after driving on 880 in oakland. we'll go right to sal for more on that. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clash. let's get right to this developing situation in oakland. >> that's right. this crash in oakland, we're actually looking at the problem where southbound 880 several cars had flat tires because of debris in the road. tara moriarty is just about to have a report from the scene. we're also looking at live pictures of newschopper2. a violent crash in san francisco that finally -- they've reopened lombard street. it was lombard at franklin. we have the video we were talking about. these are live pictures from another crash. this is a fatal crash. you can see east 80 at lagoon valley road.

we've been talking about this. it's still a traffic alert on the scene. this car flipped over. there was a person trapped inside. this is fairfield, east 80 at lagoon valley road. the traffic will be slow as we move to the left. you can see the traffic on east 80 is narrowed down here. fortunately, the westbound direction which is at the top of your screen still looks good past the scene. we'll keep on top of this. 7:01. back to the desk. thank you, sal. we do have a changing forecast today after yesterday's sunshine very calm conditions and warm temperatures. it will be cooler and breezy. i think a few locations windy. the wind is definitely picking up for a few areas. all courtesy of this weak system. this time of year that's all it takes. winds on the bay will pick up. for the america's cup, i expect things to get over 25, 30 miles an hour later on this afternoon, mainly a northerly direction once this system goes through. mostly fair. there are some partly cloudy skies in the north bay. mild lows for some. a little cooler by the coast.

mostly sunny but breezy and cooler. some 50s to the north. but a lot of 60s. temperatures hovering around 60 or upper 50s for many locations. it's because of that system. once it goes by, it will be sunny. the breeze will kick in. it will be a rather robust breeze. sun and clouds, high clouds. cooler for some. i think a good, 5, 7 compared to yesterday. we had 80, 85. a lot of 60s to low 70s. back to the desk. >> thank you, steve. 7:03. two men are in custody this morning after a deadly crash that killed one person in oakland. now police say the suspects in the crash could be linked to another crime scene. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge has more on the events that led up to the death of a man in his 70s. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, good morning. two men on the run after a shooting slammed their suv into another car according to police, killing an innocent driver. a sergeant out at the scene told me the victim in this case

is believed to be about 75 years old and lived in oakland. the deadly crash happened about 10:30 last night on bancroft avenue right next to eastmont mall. the victim was driving a subaru station wagon that round up on. roof. police say a red suv broadsided the car on its driver's side. the sergeant said the suv had two men inside possibly involved in a shooting minutes earlier and not far away. police think those men opened fire on an empty suv that was parked on the 11,000 block of 82nd avenue. no one was hit by gunfire at the scene. it's unclear exactly what prompted the shooting. while those two men were on the run following the shooting, they slammed into the car at a nearby intersection leaving the driver dead. the man killed has not been identified. the two men involved in the shooting and the crash were both taken into custody by officers there at the crash scene and the sergeant told me that both of them in all likelihood will be facing

vehicular manslaughter charges. we're live this morning in downtown oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. police detained four people after a high-speed chase on i- 80 with speeds topping 100 miles an hour. it started at 9:00 last night in elk grove after the chp tried to make a traffic stop. the driver kept going and hit another car before the chase came to an end in vacaville. the driver and three passengers were detained. no one was hurt. also new this morning, two people are recovering in the hospital after being shot in east palo alto. police say a man and a woman were sitting in their car when they were hit by gunfire around 1:30 this morning on university and michigan avenues. beeth victims were shot -- both victims were shot in the arm. police say the suspects may be driving a white, newer model camry with tinted windows. a 16-year-old boy is recovering after being shot in the face with a pellet gun during an armed robbery in east

palo alto. this happened around 9:15 on manhattan and woodland avenues. police say two suspects demanded money from the teenager, then fired a shot from the pellet gun, hitting him under his right eye. the teenager was rushed to the hospital. anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact east palo alto police. 7:06. investigators in oakland are going back to the scene of a huge fire at an historic church. it happened yesterday afternoon at the zion first church of god and christ, right near the west poekd b.a.r.t. station. last night, ktvu was given an inside look at the damage at this 97-year-old church. the flames moved fast and gutted cherished items that can't be replaced. bishop james watson showed us the rubble. >> it's way up there. there's a grand piano right where that guy is, a grand piano right there, and kind of

where that piece is coming out, that's where the or organ was was. >> damage estimated at about $900,000. well, the troubled oakland police department, still dealing with tragedy within the own ranks. there have been two officer suicides in the past two months. oakland right now provides several mental health services to police officers. that's standard for almost all major u.s. cities. there is a growing call to do more for an under why staff -- understaffed police department in what is called california's most violent city. palo alto city council is cracking down on construction companies who leave projects unfinished. ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega is live with the action the city is taking to keep abandoned buildings from becoming eyesores. good morning. >> reporter: good morning neighbors say they are fed up

with this construction project on mariposa avenue sitting here for several years. they told me in the last 20 minutes that they've seen kids sneaking in here and they suspect drug activity is going on here. residents on mariposa avenue say they want all of this to stop and they applaud the action the city took last night. the palo alto weekly reported that last night the council voted to set time limits for building permits and explore penalties for delinquent projects. council members say the unsecured buildings can present numerous safety concerns that lead to unlawful activities. neighbors who live near one of these sites describe what it has been like. >> i'm pretty sure it's been at least five years. the neighbors at a certain point signed a petition and sent a letter to the people who own it or are building it and didn't really get a response.

>> reporter: under current law, building projects have no time line requirements. leaders acknowledge there are numerous projects sitting idle for years. once this ordinance is drafted in palo alto, it will only apply to future and not existing projects. so that was somewhat of a disappointment for some of the residents that i spoke to who were jogging by this morning. but they are still happy, again, that the city council did something about this. reporting live from palo alto, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. happening right now -- president obama addressing the united nations' general assembly. a lot of speculation on what his speech will focus on that he will be discussing. that obviously is not president obama. but a lot of speculation the president may meet with iran's new president he's also scheduled to address the united

welcome back. later today, president obama and former president bill clinton will appear together in new york. both will speak at an event for president obama's healthcare reform, the affordable care act. now, this joint appearance comes exactly one week before people who don't have health insurance can start signing up for health coverage through new insurance marketplaces. in a speech earlier this month in arkansas, former president clinton urged critics of the law to stop trying to kill it and work instead to improve it. two bay area community leaders are being honored today at the white house. it's part of the white house champions of change program. emily white with the american

red cross oversees a team that delivers free disaster preparedness training to diverse bay area communities. norman fong is the director of the chinatown community development center and created a program called an adopt an alleyway. it's for young people to clean up streets in chinatown and offer alleyway tours of the real chinatown. bay area drivers will soon see a big change in the chp harley-davidsons are replacing some bmw motorcycles. the oakland harley-davidson dealership recently won a new contract with the state and will start rolling out custom electric glide motorcycles next week. the contract calls for 121 motorcycles at more than 28,000 apiece. highway patrol officials say more than 20% of the chp's bikes have more than 100,000 miles on them and those older motorcycles need to be

replaced. >> we bid against kawasaki, bmw, i think yamaha. when it came down to it, harley was the only manufacturer that could meet the criteria that the chp had set. >> some say the cost of maintaining the older bmw motorcycles may have been a factor in making the switch. the new harleys come with a three-year, 60,000 mile warranty. the chp and sal have been very busy. what are you focusing on now? >> we're looking at the toll plaza. it's been busy drying to get into san francisco. it's filled in, backed up for a 25-minute delay to get on the bridge. we had the earlier problem on 880 near high traffic. traffic is light near the coliseum. coming up in a few we'll hear from tara as to what she found out about the cars that were pulled over with flat tires. livermore valley, very heavy traffic this morning.

not only from the altamont pass but into livermore. 680 out of pleasanton is slow. and 880 is very slow, as you can see from hayward, all the way down to fremont. let's go to steve. it will be a breezy and windy day for some. and a cooler pattern. on the bay i expect the wind to cavg up. small craft advisory starts at noon. i think by noon later this afternoon. this time of year, it doesn't matter if it's a weak front there's a big difference in the temperatures. it will plunge in very, very cool air. the wind speed, it will be a northerly direction later on. i expect that to crank up there. not only on the bay but some of the higher elevations showing gusts 30, 35 miles an hour. 58 san francisco to start. we'll go for 68 on a high after yesterday's 76. it will be cooler, mostly clear that little band of high clouds, won't last too long. cooler and breezy is the main

message or downright windy for a few. our system does have a little more punch up toward the sierra and also northeast california. for us we'll get the high clouds and the cooler conditions. 58 in tahoe. the south wind will do that every time. that's why they've rocketed it up from 48. it looks like the high clouds are starting to clear. much warmer lows. ocean temperatures are between 59 and 62. you get a little south wind. the combination of those two gives us a mild warning. a little bit stronger breeze in fairfield. the wind picking up. napa west at 8. sfo, chris richardson, brisbane, he expects a windy day. and i would concur that. sfo all the way up to livermore, when it gets thattest with wind, that's a signed of things to come. there's not a lot for it. what's over us will clear up. very, very cold air. this will plunge on top of us.

it will clear out of mendocino and lake county. picking up a little bit on the sierra nevada. more likely late tomorrow, tomorrow for any shower activity -- late tonight, tomorrow for any shower activity. sunny, warm. some very cool air begins to plunge into northern california and also up in the sierra nevada. again, we're on the western edge of it. if you are up in tahoe or truckee, mainly wind. scattered showers tomorrow. lowering snow level around 6,000, 6500 feet. sun and clouds. high clouds in the morning. they will be out of here. it will be cooler. upper 70s for some. very few low 80s. i think we'll take a pretty good dip on these temperatures compared to yesterday where we had 80, 85, 86. a few low 80s holding on. i think they will be soft 80s. 60s, 70s, coast, peninsula. much cooler tomorrow, breezy to windy. you will feel that northerly direction. we'll start to rebound a little bit on thursday. it calms down and warms up as

welcome back. conflicting reports this morning about that deadly shopping mall takeover in kenya. government authorities say they've secured the mall. however, the islamist militant group behind the attack says hostages are still being held and that they are holding their ground against the government forces. we're also starting to hear some horrifying stories from people who survived the attack. one couple, radio broadcasters, they were hosting a children's cooking competition in the mall when the shooting started. >> we said get down, get down

on the floor. just as we did that, the gunman tossed a grenade to where we were. >> kenya's foreign minster says two or three americans are among those who took part in the shopping mall attack. she said the americans were young men, 18 to 19 years old, of somali or arab origin and lived in minnesota and one other place in the u.s. the extremist and ken yawn military are both using twitter to send information out to the rest of the world. tech analysts says several accounts have been shut down by the militants only to see them quickly replaced. the chinese government will make available some social media websites that are currently banned but only under limited condition. a hong kong newspaper reports facebook, twitter and other

sites considered sensitive will be accessible in a new free trade zone in shanghai. the idea of unblocking websites in the free trade zone is to make foreigners feel more comfortable. the zone is scheduled to launch on sunday. california's new eraser law will give children and teenagers a way to remove embarrassing things they've posted online. governor brown signed a bill into law that requires the removal of online activity if a minor requests it. facebook and twitter already offer ways to erase content for people of all ages. the new law will not apply to posts by other people. it takes effect in 2015 for anyone under the age of 18. time is 7:25. in the america's cup, the boats are back in the water today as the yacht racing heads into its 18th day. yesterday oracle team usa scored the fifth straight victory against emirate's team after a slight wind delay

there. the second race was postponed until today. the score sounds 8-6 with team new zealand only needing one more wind to take the cup. the racing is due to continue today at 1:15. this america's cup is the longest running in history. that means it's good news for san francisco businesses. we checked out prices and availability at some of the hotels in san francisco yesterday. the hotel batali on the waterfront is charging 600 bucks a night. the fairmont hotel and the hyatt are fully booked and not knowing when the cup will end is keeping the prices high. >> if you are booking a hotel at the last minute and they are sold out, it's equivalent to buying a plane ticket at the last night. >> people are not just staying inside hotel rooms. instead, they are out exploring

280 and also on 101 getting into the valley. nothing major. we've had a couple of minor accidents. southbound 17 at the cats for example but not in the commute direction. let's take a look at the toll plaza. that's a 30-minute-plus delay before you make it on the bridge getting into the city with no major problems. southbound 680 at highway 4, right in this general area, word of another crash. it's so new it has not popped up. southbound 680 at highway 4 as i move the map to the center, there is a report of a new injury accident in this area and the paramedics are in on the way -- are on the way. traffic will be slow there anyway as you drive south. a bunch of cars got flat tires this morning on a major bay area freeway. more than a dozen. ktvu's tara moriarty is there and tara, i understand you figured out what happened to all of those cars. >> reporter: yeah. the chp figured out the culprit

was a 3 x 1 foot chunk of metal that fell off a truck and the chp tossed it over the fence to get it out of the road. it was very, very heavy. it's easy to see how it would puncture all of the tires of the cars. more than a dozen cars ran over it here in the southbound lanes at i-80 at the high street offramp and had to pull over around quarter to 6:00 this morning. the chp says this is a prime example why trucks need to secure their loads. they want to remind drivers to call 911 when they see debris in the road wreau that could be a po -- roadway that could be a potential hazard. a simple phone call like that could have spared a lot of headache and hassle. >> driving along, drinking coffee. boom. big obstruction in the road. split second to think about what you are gonna do. >> reporter: the chm -- the chp marked litter enforcement day where they inspected 80 garbage

trucks. eight of them received violations for not having proper tarp. 19 received citations for having a pull that debris could fall through. they want to stress how important the safety issue is. traffic was a mess earlier. you can see the kids there waiting i think to get to school this morning. luckily, no one was hurt in this entire incident. coming up in about an hour, we're gonna have a live interview with the chp to, once again, talk about how important it is to make sure that debris does not make it on the roadway. we're live in oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. this morning police in san francisco are looking for suspects in a deadly shooting. it happened around 10:00 last night on randolph and bright streets in the ingleside heights neighborhood. the victim, 19 years old. homicide investigators say he was shot and killed right after he got off a muni train. so far no word of any suspects

or what led up to the shooting. police are expected to release more information in about 90 minutes. 7:34. this morning, contract negotiations are set to resume between b.a.r.t. management and the unions with a growing threat of a strike next month. the schedule is in place for those critical contract talks during the final weeks of the cooling-off period. it calls for ten of the remaining 16 days to be spent on negotiating the big issues, pay, beb fipts, and headquarter -- benefits and health care. but the two sides are far apart. b.a.r.t. workers could walk off the deal october 11th if there's not a deal. power is back on in in richmond for thousands -- back on in richmond for thousands in the dark. pg&e says 4700 cun mers lost their power -- customers lost their power around 10:00 last night. the power was back on about a half-hour later. pg&e blames an equipment failure for the outage.

a big donation will soon be coming to uc san francisco. the $30 million donation will be used to help pay for the education and living expenses of students pursuing doctorates in basic sciences. today the university's chancellor is expected to announce the gift from sequoia capital chairman, michael morris and his wife, harriet. the university has kicked in another $25 million to supplement the contribution and plans to raise $5 million more to create an endowment fund. safety is giving uc berkeley a $71,000 grant to help fight childhood obesity. the school of public health will use the money to refer at- risk children to resources, such as health clubs in san francisco. it will also track their progress. the safeway foundation is providing $3 million in grants to similar community programs across the country.

police in mountain view searching for a man they say threw a woman to the ground at the shoreline amphitheater and knocked her unconscious. it happened september 14th. police say a woman tried to break up a fight when a man through her down to the pavement. she was knocked unconscious. she was later taken to the medic tent. she did recover and went back to watching that hip-hop show. this video by the way was posted online. looking for answers after a brutal attack in a pleasanton neighborhood. pam cook is in our newsroom now to tell us what the police are hoping to find, pam. >> yeah. police need help, they are hoping witnesses step forward after a man was brutally beaten just outside his home. the pleasanton patch identifies the victim as 51-year-old david lamont who is in the hospital in critical condition. a friend tells the patch that lamont went to confront a group of teenagers at a loud party in

the cul-de-sac. when he didn't return, his wife went to look for him, called him lying in the street and called 911. this attack happened after midnight on saturday on middleton place in what people describe as a very nice, quiet neighborhood in pleasanton. in a press release, pleasanton police say they are following up on credible leads in the case and they will have an update sometime today. now, officers say witnesses so far report seeing a dark- colored suv leaving the scene. the victim reported to be in a coma at this point. so he's not able to talk to investigators but we're in contact with pleasanton police. we'll bring you any new information as soon as it becomes available. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:38. people who live in oakland's rockridge neighborhood are concerned about a rise in crime. police say nine people including a pregnant woman were robbed at gunpoint yesterday morning while waiting for casual carpool rides on hudson and claremont avenue.

some of the carpoolers were -- were able to run away. others lost backpacks an wallets and smartphones. people who live in rockridge say this is just the latest robbery in the area. people have been held up leaving the b.a.r.t. station. >> following people home from b.a.r.t. or robbing people outside of cafes for their commute -- computers and cell phone. it's part of a bad trend. >> three suspects have been detained. carpoolers are likely being targeted for their electronics. a pet store worker arrested on the peninsula. what he's accused of doing and the connection to home burglaries. new information on the man behind the washington navy yard shooting rampage. why he was granted security clearance even after he was caught lying on his application. good morning. still heavy traffic on highway 4 this morning.

interaction at all with president obama and iranian's new leader. i did get off the phone with the white house. there are still no planned meeting between president obama and iran's new president. the world is watching to see if the two leaders will shake hands at some point today. the president spoke with a long- standing distrust between the two nations and the iranian government looks at america as an enemy. president obama directed secretary of state john kerry to pursue nuclear weapons deals with iran. he said the diplomatic path must be tested. >> if we can resolve the issue of iran's nuclear program, that can serve as a major step down a long road towards a different relationship. kerr. >> reporter: kerry -- kerri is scheduled to meet with the prime minister to negotiate the plan in iran. back to you. >> thank you.

new information this morning. the washington navy yard gunman lied on his apr plat security clearance but was granted one anyway. when aaron alexis enlisted in the navally in may of 2007, he did not disclose he had been arrested in seattle in 2004 for shooting the tires of a parked car. he also did not reveal a string of bad debts on the form he filled out to get his security clearance. investigators who interviewed aaron alexis about the admissions still granted the clearance. those devastating floods in colorado have claimed another life. another woman has died. eight people have been killed in the flooding there. six others still listed as missing. almost 2,000 homes were damaged or destroyed as well as more than 200 miles of state highways and 50 state bridges. now, as colorado rebuilds from the flooding, some survivors are becoming crime victims. thieves are hitting them.

in one mobile home park, three homes were burglarized. that number is expected to grow. one woman says her mother's wedding ring was stolen and it can't be replaced. >> they were mine. i worked for them. they were my belongings. >> to have somebody out there like this targeting folks like this is very discouraging. >> the colorado national guard is stepping in to help out and will be watching damaging neighborhoods in longmont and lions for the time being. fremont police are investigating the assault of two people they say mock their attackers for being def. this happened friday night at the fremont b.a.r.t. station. police say a group of deaf men approached two other men and asked for cigarettes. the victims claim they didn't have any. the two groups argued and fought. one of the victims admit to making fun of the group for

being deaf. pg&e has been hit with near lawsuit linked to the deadly san bruno explosion. the lawsuit was filed by a shareholders who said executives paid themselves nice bonuses while ignoring pipeline safety issues. the suit claims they put profits above safety and they should pay for the fines, legal fees and other costs related to the explosion and fire that killed eight people in 2010. 7:45. a brush fire in southern california is threatening several homes right now. fire started yesterday afternoon in the mountains above azusa. it's burned 200 acres. evacuations were ordered late last night. 25 homes are under structure protection. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. federal researchers are working to develop a richter scale for wildfires. they say it will be just like how they measure earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes. the proposed scale would range from an e-1 to e-4. it will measure how intense a wildfire

here's sal. we have traffic that will be busy in many areas. 280 northbound is pretty slow. one of the things i can tell you there could be some alternate routes for you. let's take a detailed look. 280 has a couple of problems here. you can see the traffic is going to be busy. the biggest one is i moved this up here for a little bit. this crash here, 280 slow one of the things that we can do to perhaps look at 85 but 85 is still very slow as you can see all the way down through here. see a lot of slow traffic as you drive to highway 17. so that's probably not a good alternate. if you have your city route, you might want to think about using that or looking at 101. it's very slow in the san jose area. some say tuesday is the busiest day of the week. let's go out to the bay bridge toll plaza. that's backed up for a 20, 25- minute delay. we had some earlier problems getting there. that's gone. a generally busy tuesday.

back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. this morning, oakland police are investigating the man in his 70s killed last night in a crash not far from his home. it happened near the intersection of church street and bancroft avenues. ktvu's alex savidge is at the police station now and there's new information you just found out about the suspects. alex? [ sirens ] >> reporter: they are both under age according to police. these two young men were on the run last night after a shooting, according to officers, when they slammed their suv into another car, killing an innocent driver. a police sergeant out at the scene early this morning told me the victim in this case is believed to be an elderly man, about 75 years old, who lived in oakland. this deadly crash happened around 10:30 last night on bancroft avenue right next to the eastmont mall. the victim was driving a sue bu raw station wagon that wound up on the roof after the crash. police say a red suv broadsided the car on the driver's side.

a sergeant told me that the suv had two young men inside who had possibly been involved in at shooing minutes earlier and not far away. police think they opened fire on an empty suv that was parked on the 110000 block of 82nd avenue. no one was hit by gunfire and it's unclear what prompted that initial shooting. while the two juveniles were on the run following the shooting, they slammed their -- they slammed their suv into that car leaving the driver dead. the two young men involved in the crash were both taken into custody and a sergeant told me in all likelihood they will be facing at the very least vehicular manslaughter charges. in the meantime, i just checked in with the coroner not that long ago. at this this point that name is not being released. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. this morning police detained four people after this high-speed chase on 880.

speeds topped 100 miles an hour. it started around the:00 last night in -- 9:00 last night in elk grove after the chp tried to make a traffic stop. the driver kept going and hit another car before the chase ended in vacaville. the driver and three passengers were detained no one was hurt. two people recovering from a shooting in east palo alto. police say a man and woman were sitting in their car when they were hit by a gunfire by 1:30 this morning on university and michigan avenues. both were shot in the arm. police say the suspects may be driving a white newer model toyota camry with tinted windows. a 16-year-old boy also recovering. he was shot in the face with a pellet gun during an armed robbery in east papt. in east palo alto. police say two suspects demanded money from the teen and fired a shot from that pellet gun hitting him under

dumping. later today, the oakland city council is scheduled to debate an ordinance a misdemeanor offense and increase the fines. the ordinance comes after abandoned furniture and garbage and haz art out terminals were dumped in parks and freeways. the city council says you can report illegal dumping on the public works web page. cities around the country are slowly watching san jose and a controversial plan to cut the benefits of city workers. last year, 70% of san jose workers approved measure b. it challenges the concept that pensions promises to state and local and government workers are a vested right. city leaders nationwide are expected to introduce similar measures if san jose wins a legal battle with the unions. a ruling is expected in the next knew months. a few dozen schools have lost their academic ratings.

they include four school districts in the bay area. the berryessa union, new haven unified, vallejo city unified and santa cruz city schools. these school districts lost their rating of the academic performance index, which is a key indicator by which california schools are judged. the school needs these ratings to meet performance targets. the schools that failed to achieve the targets over several years faced possible sanctions such as losing funding. it was a rough game at candlestick park on sunday. not just for the 49ers beaten by the colts, 27-7. police are reporting at least two serious incidents of fan violence during sunday's game at the stick. officers say a 15-year-old boy suffered a concussion during a fight with a 29-year-old man early in the game. and two women were badly hurt during a fight after the game. the fan violence came despite increased stadium security.

memory on sunday. 8:16. tragedy in southern california, after a 2-year-old boy was attacked and killed by as many as five dogs. the attack happened in the city of colton in san bernardino county last night. the dogs have been taken from the home and all of the animals are believed to be pit bull mixes. san francisco police are looking for four people and two dogs who could be connected to a dog-fighting case. investigators say they got hold of a video that appears to show people encouraging these two pit bulls to fight. the video also shows four people who appear to be bystanders. these pictures are from that video. anyone with information is asked to call police. they've already arrested two other people and have an arrest warrant for a third. 8:17. there is a new app for the bay area bike share program. it came all the way from belgium. the app is available on the iphone and android. this is the third bike share app released in the u.s. this

fremont. a bunch of fender-benders that are making things slow. earlier this morning we did have a problem with several cars on interstate 880, they've got flat tires near high street. let's go to tara moriarty who is near the scene and explain what happens. >> reporter: you've probably been on the freeway. maps tuv seen a ma -- perhaps you've seen a mattress or a tire tread and swerved to avoid it. the chp wants to you call 911 when you see something like -- the wants you to call 911 when you see something like that. joining me live is officer little to explain what happened here. >> good morning. at approximately 5:41 we had a piece of debris in the lanes of southbound 880. consequently, approximately 13 cars in the end ran over the piece of debris before it was able to be cleared. it caused everything from flat tires to undercarriage damage. some of these were collisions. some were flat tires and

whatnot. we were able to get everybody out of the freeway and get them on their way. the last car left about 15 minutes ago. >> reporter: could this have been prevented? >> definitely. a lot of times the debris you see on the roadway is a result of unsecured loads. people putting things in the back of loads and not tied down securely. when that does falls on the freeway, it affects other people. on the 17th of september, we concluded our maximum enforcement day. the chp found eight vehicles with violations with vehicles not covering their loads and 19 additional vehicles were cilted for having a hole where debris could fall through. if you are gonna transport things on the freeway, you have to tie down your loads, make sure there is a tarp. if you have metal debris, make

in a pleasanton neighborhood. pam cook is in the newsroom. you just called the pleasanton police department? >> officers say they are following you up on credible leads but they say the department is overwhelmed from phone calls about people worried about what happened in the neighborhood. the "pleasanton patch" says 51- year-old david lamont is in a coma after being badly beaten outside of his home. he went to confront teens about a loud party. when he didn't return, his wife went to look for him, found him lying in the street and called 911. we're out in the neighborhood this morning, the house where it happened. this happened after midnight on saturday. this is middleton place in pleasanton and what people describe is a very nice, quiet neighborhood. pleasanton police say they are talking with people out there in the neighborhood and that they are again following up on some credible leads in the

set to resume between b.a.r.t. management and unions with the threat of a strike still looming next month. a schedule is now in place for those critical -- critical contract talks during the final weeks of the cooling off period. it calls for ten of the remaining 16 days to be spent on negotiating the wig issues -- big ires of pay, benefits and healthcare. but the two sides are still far apart around the cooling off period ends october 10th. so b.a.r.t. workers could walk off the job on october 11th if the two sides don't reach a deal by then. people who live in oakland's rockridge neighborhood are concerned about a rise in crime. police say nine people including a pregnant woman were robbed by gunman yesterday morning while waiting for casual carpool rides on hudson street and claremont avenue. some of the carpoolers were able to run away but others lost backpacks and purses containing wallets and smart phones. people say this is the latest robbery in the area. people have been held up leaving the b.a.r.t.

station. three suspects have been detained. bay area drivers you will soon see a big change in the chp's motorcycles. harley-davidsons are replacing some bmw motorcycles. the oakland harley-davidson dealership won a new contract with the state and next week, they are gonna start rolling out custom glide motorcycles. contract calls for 121 motorcycles, costing about $28,000 apiece. the chp says more than 20% of the chp's bikes have more than 100,000 miles on them. those older bikes need to be replaced. >> we bid against kawasaki, bmw. there was a bunch of people

last night that killed an elderly man. it happened near church street an bancroft about 10:30 last night. police think the two young suspects were fleeing the scene of a shooting a couple of blocks away when that car crashed. the government of kenya says it's ending that deadly takeover at a shopping mall. kenyan troops have been seen sweeping through the mall's upper level today. the kenyan red cross confirms at least 62 people have been killed but said they don't know if there are more -- know there are more casualties inside. and additional 65 people are unaccounted for. the chp says a stray piece of metal debris on southbound 880 in oakland flattened the tires of about a dozen cars early this morning. the three-foot long piece of metal was first reported near the high street offramp about 5:45 this morning. luckily, no one was hurt.

8:55. strulingle california -- struggling california homeowners have gotten more than than $18 billion in help from a national mortgage settlement last year. nearly $3 billion has gone to borrowers in contra costa county and two other counties. more than 84,000 california families received reductions in what they owed on first and second mortgages. bank of america must pay more than $2 million to settle a racial discrimination case. the money will go to 1100 african-american job applicants and covers back wages and interest. the government says b of a used unfair and inconsistent hiring guidelines that led to qualified applicants being rejected for teller and entry level positions. southwest airline prls will have to spend more to get the cheapest tickets available.
