an elderly driver now being questioned after a deadly crash claimed the life of a teenaged boy in san francisco. witnesses say it sounded like an explosion. one of the cars went airborne. a mangled car and debris littered across a roadway in contra costa county. what investigators say happened just moments before the crash. and a father and his daughter being mourned today after an early-morning fire. what we're learning about the cause and why it took so long for firefighters to rescue them.

good afternoon. i'm mike mibach. a san francisco high school student killed. his mother and sister injured after they were involved in a horrific collision at gough and pine. tara moriarty joins us live from pine and gough where several blocks are still shut down. >> reporter: well, witnesses including two police officers say that an elderly woman who was driving at speeds up to 80 miles an hour before she crashed into a white catering van and the gold colored minivan that you see, killing a teenager. the major accident investigators team is still reconstructing how all of this unfolded so tragically. >> two twisted heaps of metal live in gough and pine streets. >> the witnesses say it sounded like an explosion. the van was airborne. >> reporter: tanya smith says it was scary. >> when i looked up, the car

was landing. >> reporter: just before 7:00, officers spotted a silver mercedes speeding westbound on pine. >> the car was going so fast, they didn't have time to activate lights an sirens to get within a block of it. >> reporter: after three blocks -- >> the independent witnesses say they couldn't believe how fast that car was going. some estimates as high as 80 miles an hour. >> reporter: the van held a mother and her two children on the way to school. a 16-year-old boy identified as a junior at lincoln high school was killed instantly. the mother and daughter were taken to san francisco general. the daughter suffered critical injuries. three people from the van were taken to the hospital. the driver of the mercedes got out of her car and walked away. >> when she came out, she felled. she grabbed her head. she looked really distraught. >> reporter: why was the elderly woman speelding?

was she trying to beat the lights? was her gas pedal stuck. two people are fighting for their lives. pine and gough still closed. we'll keep you posted on twitter when they were reopen. back to you. >> thank you. law enforcement chase has ended in a deadly crash in the east bay. at this hour, deputies remain on the scene. the contra costa county sheriff's office says deputies were fur suing a suspected stolen vehicle on marsh lane when a vehicle lost control. one person was killed. two others were taken by lifeflight medical atdown medical center. it's not clear where the chase started. marsh is closed between morgan territory and deer valley. a family of four attempts to escape an early-morning fire. two of them make it out alive. a father and daughter do not. claudine wong is the names of

the victims, the cause and the struggles firefighters had getting into the house. >> reporter: this man's family woke up to screams. >> very thick smoke billowing out everywhere. >> reporter: firefighters got on seen at 1:40 a.m. and knew this was a life and death situation. >> the mom had indicated when we got on scene there were people inside. i believe particularly saying their baby is inside. >> reporter: firefighters say the garage fair wasn't that bad but they still had trouble getting in. that's because the entryway has this metal security door with two locks. to get inside they had to use a metal saw to cut through it a mother, father, grandfather and 1-year-old lived inside the home. according to firefighters, the mother escaped out the back. raymond was in the back asleep

in the garage. the chief says both were asleep and may have been woken up by the smoke detectors. >> she wasn't in the crib. >> reporter: you think she woke up? >> probably. >> reporter: investigators say the fire was accidental and blame either electrical problems or smoking materials. it's an accident that dev stated families -- devastated families. >> i saw the baby. i feel terrible. >> reporter: the chief says so do the firefighters who sign up and save lives and hurt for everyone they can. in san francisco, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> this afternoon we're learning more about the deadly stabbing of a dodgers' fan wednesday night. the father of the suspect claims his son acted in self- defense. i want to show you a photo that shows the victim jonathan denver at fort bragg hours before he was killed. san francisco police say they've arrested 21-year-old michael montgomery of lodi in the attack. in an interview with a lodi

newspaper, montgomery's father claims the stabbing was self- defense and denver hit his son over the head with a chair. an 18-year-old detained has been released without charges. police are still searching for two men scene running from the scene. friends are speaking out about his death. they say they warned denver in the past about wearing his team's colors. but they said he was easy-going and never wanted to stop fights. >> i gave him a big warning before because i knew what happened a couple of years ago. in the giants verses l.a. and it was -- i never thought that would happen. >> denver's friends say he had taking the day off from his job as a plumbing apprentice in fort bragg so he could attend a game with his brother. bryan stow's family says "we're

horrified and deeply saddened by the senseless act of violence. our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. police say stow was beaten by dodger fans outside dodger stadium on opening night 2011. expect tight security at at&t this weekend. last night fans paused for a moment of silence in memory of john denver. >> please rise and remove your caps. join us in a moment of silence to honor jonathan denver who tragically lost his life last night. >> officers are patrolling the ballpark. both fans and players are shocked by the violence. >> it's really sad and i know all of us hate to hear something like that. we take this as ear just -- serious as anybody. but when it comes down to it. it's not just a game.

>> the giants said there's absolutely no place in our community for this type of senseless violence. uc santa cruz police are alerting students about an attack on campus. a man grabbed a girl. she was able to fight him off and make it back to the dorm. the man ran off and may have an injury. snoof san rafael police are investigating several -- san -- san rafael are investigating a date rape drug. the attacks happened on september 11th, september 21st. witnesses woke up a day after drinking at this bar. the bar's owner plans to

install security cameras. beyond wonderland is scheduled for tomorrow and sunday at sheer line ampy theet -- shore line amphitheater. patrons are encouraged to be careful what drugs they use and not to mix them with alcohol. the b.a.r.t. strike is looming. we're now less than two weeks away from the end of the governor-ordered 60-day cooling off period. if b.a.r.t. and the unions can't come to a contract agreement, b.a.r.t. union workers have promised to strike as early as october 11th. a short time ago, face-to-face contract talks resumed. reportedly, the two sides are still more than $112 million apart. the senate voted to fund the government through november 15th and not cut off funds foreign the president's

healthcare plan. on a 54-44 vote mostly along party lines. the senators stripped out a portion of the house bill that could have defunded obamacare. the bill goes back to the house of representatives which can modify its own bill or stand firm and risk a government shutdown as early as tuesday. >> i hope that reason and jew dish shusness -- judiciousness prevails and not a knee-jerk reaction to what a few people want to do to our government. >> i salute the house for standing up to fight and defund obamacare and i remain hopeful, confident, optimistic that this fight will continue which means this issue is coming back to the senate. >> house leaders have not indicated how they will approach the bill when it returns to them. hay fire burning near

investigators say they are trying to track down a hit-and- run driver who killed a man early this morning in atherton. janine de la vega explains why this case is going to be a challenge for police. from chopper 2 you can see the large police response on glenwood road near middlefield in atherton. a body of a man was found on the side of the road. officers were alerted by an anonymous caller at around 5:40. >> we found a shoe we believe is associated with the dedeceased person and fine -- deceased person and finding the body on glenwood, we believe the person was hit and dragged to -- dragged to that location. >> reporter: police say he appears to be white between 40 and 50. officers are going door to door to try to find out if anything saw anything suspicious between 2:00 and 6:00 this morning.

>> terrible thing. i didn't hear anything until the sirens -- there was like one siren this morning. >> reporter: police say there's not much debris left at the scene that would help them identify the suspect car. investigators are gathering what they can. >> what we're looking for is identification of a suspect, identification of a suspect vehicle. >> reporter: police had to close a portion of middlefield in glenwood -- and glenwood to conduct their investigation. the scene is close to an elementary school and a high school which caused a huge backup of traffic. it caused a slight inconvenience to residents who were only allowed to walk in. >> yes, you can walk. >> okay. >> reporter: in this neighborhood where crime rarely happens, the residents hope the person responsible is caught. in atherton, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the streets around where the man was found will be closed until about 3:00 as the investigation continues. contra costa county sheriff investigators are looking into a deadly shooting. a man was shot and killed on silver avenue in north

richmond. deputies say the shot spotter alert system picked up gunshots around 9:30 last night. the victim is a 30-year-old man. he had been shot several times. no arrests have been made and deputies say a suspect or motive is not yet known. people live at a san jose mobile home park could have their gas service restored by this afternoon. pg&e shut off the gas to the oak crest estates on north first street after several leaks were found. residents say they've been without heat, hot water or the use of their stoves. one family said they understand the safety concerns but they question the responsibility of pg&e and property management. >> i just really had hoped that they would try to do their best to get everybody -- get the gas up and running much sooner. >> pg&e was able to reconnect the gas yesterday but the utility says the mobile home park owns the equipment and is responsible for reassembling

and repairing the gas meters. the city of berkeley has reportedly closed down the swimming pool at berkeley high school. the website berkeley side says health worker found the level of chemicals in the water were above normal operating levels. parents of water polo players complained their children had burning eyes, itching and in some cases loss of body hair. firefighters are still battling a fire at the hay kingdom off 505 in winters. the fire began last night. three hay barns have been destroyed. so far the main facility is contained. they are concerned about high winds and say the fire could burn for days. >> it's a massive amount of fire. you think what you burn in your fireplace and multiply it.

very spokey care. it's -- smokey fire. it's difficult to put out. >> firefighters from at least five cities are along the fire lines. that's started the fire has not been determined. firefighters are on the scene of a large compost fire on carroll avenue near ingle street in the bayview neighborhood. the national gases and heat generated from the compost ignited the fire. much of that fire should be out by now they say but could take months for it to be completely put out. no structures are threatened. a section of el camino real in redwood city remains closed following a propane explosion. chopper 2 was over the scene of el camino real where the explosion happened. crews shut down both directions of the roadway as they doused water. police say they have no estimated time of reopening.

well, clear skies. warm temperatures although cold this morning but a lot of reports coming in, especially from around clayton and alamo over to the santa cruz mountains from all of the smoky, hazy fires. that's because of the hay fire. it's blowing north to south. we have dris tal clear temperatures here -- crystal clear temperatures here. we didn't have any fog this morning but had big-time lows. a lot of 30s and 40s. even from mendocino county to lake county down to the santa cruz mountains. a lot of 40s or near 60. if that north breeze continued to blow as it did much in napa, your low never got below 60. a red flag warning until 3:00. north and east bay hills not seeing much. it's a northerly breeze. it will be sunny and warm. it will continue on saturday. it was 25 in tahoe this morning. they are 53 now. things have calmed down. they made it to 41 this

morning. sacramento, 73. 76 now. that's the spirit for napa and also santa rosa. it's close for novato. 68 for san francisco. half moon bay way 41. livermore mid-70s. everyone is close on the current temperatures at noon. north wind at fairfield. if you have a north wind there, that's what's blowing a lot of the smoke. napa's wind a little more northwest. oakland has a puff of a west. not too much towards parts of the south bay. a little north wind at sfo. northeast at livermore. just a hint of a west wind. we had some clouds, snowshowers. things have really calmed down. it's sunny. almost statewide here. sunny and warm. breezy for some. not for everybody. not much of a breeze. if you have the breeze, it will be on the warm side and today, tomorrow look good and then a system will cool us down sunday. maybe some rain moves in. things are changing in. sunny and warm.

francisco bay this morning. juda schiller got on a board. his water bike. a regular two-wheeler and pedaled from oakland to san francisco. he said he did not want to wait for the extension of the bike lane on the new span of the bay bridge. >> it cost billions of dollars, a long time coming. for at least another ten years and $500,000 there won't be a bike lane in san francisco. ive thought it was time to make the crossing. >> he expected the trip to take 45 minutes or less but it took him about two hours. well, the oakland as single game tickets for potential american league championship series home games went up for grabs and nance were just a little excited. >> let's go oakland! >> tickets went on sell at 10:00 a.m. and people waited for hours at the coliseum for a shot at those prime time seats.
