show oakland is arvalling 15 -- averaging 15 robberies a day. we heard one call after another and one robbery involved people who told us they have never been victims of crime till today. >> reporter: 12:30 p.m. this afternoon an armed robbery, two suspects, four victims. >> they took all our cash and wallets. >> he wasn't hurt but the owner showed us where he was pistol whipped. statistics show the city is on pace to have 5,300 robberies this year. 1,000 more than 2012. oakland's distinction of having the highest rate of robberies in the country isn't likely to change. >> a shame. >> reporter: business owners are suffering after we reported on a rash of burglaries

yesterday a store owner told us a police captain called apologizing for the lack of officers and pledging to assign a detective to their case. >> right through the middle. on the wall. >> reporter: he showed us where a bullet came into his business over the weekend. >> when i called back to find out if they were coming they said i was incident number 700. >> we called and e-mailed police today and didn't get anyone to speak on camera. in the past they said adding more officers and proactive patrols are part of the solution here. eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. dozens of new police recruits started their first day of the oakland police academy. 60 men and women were greeted by the police chief and mayor

jean quan. the group includes 7 women and 14 spanish speakers. they are scheduled to graduate in 6 months. last week another academy graduated. the class that started today had 57 recruits. a grant will add 10 officers to the department. when they are hired the total number of officers will be 714, half of themmal are patrol officers. -- them are patrol officers. a transit bus was hit by gunfire in oakland as the bus was moving along international boulevard. the bus kept going and stopped at 15th. windows on both sides of the bus were shattered. a witness saw two people running from the scene with a gun. one person was hospitalized. a second person was grazed by a

bullet and treated. new at 6:00 p.m. the family of a 16-year-old boy killed in a crash is speaking out. the father spoke about the family's loss. ktvu's david stevenson has more on what he is saying and more on the woman accused in the deadly crash. >> reporter: we heard from the father of the teen here at his son's high school. he spoke about what the loss has meant to his family. [ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: he spoke of the devastating loss of his son. >> every day his family wishes it was a nightmare and we could still hug and see him. >> reporter: kevin san died friday killed in a violent car crash that also injured his mother and sister. >> she is still in critical condition and in a coma. >> police identified the suspect as jennie zhu.

investigators say she was traveling at 80 miles per hour. she has been booked on one charge of vehicle manslaughter not involving drugs or alcohol with gross negligence and associated vehicle code violation. >> we can't comprehend why anyone would be driving 80 miles per hour in san francisco. >> instead of kevin it could have been any one of our children in our community. please, slow down. >> the death has shaken the students here. administrators offered grief counselors for students. some who were angered by the death. >> completely innocent. makes you feel angry about her killing him and ending his life. >> reporter: funeral services are being finalized but the family established a fund for that and other expenses. the district attorney expects to receive the case tomorrow.

reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. police are investigating a homicide that left an 18-year- old man dead after 7:00 p.m. last night at an apartment complex. investigators say the victim was shot in the neck. he managed to for help but collapsed. police haven't released the victim's name or a description of the suspect. new numbers show truancy in elementary school schools throughout california reached an alarming rate and costing the state a lot of money. the california attorney general said 1 million elementary school students or 30% were truant during the last school year. that cost the state $1.4 billion in federal funding. not to mention the cost associated with increased crime and poverty. a school is trying to

moment. >> reporter: baker beach will shut down if congress shuts down the government, potentially closing 401 national park. >> anyplace that has a gate will close. >> reporter: also on the list alcatraz. while ungated areas like fort mason will be open, the bath rooms will not. >> i think it is a tragedy. >> reporter: most of the federal employees will be furloughed if the government shuts down. the most visible impact is the tourist, shut out of the national parks. >> just seems like a shame. >> the shut down could have an impact on state government. short term the impact should be

are elias sorokin. investigators say he was killed during a drug deal in 2009. his truck was found after he disappeared. two men were convicted of the murder. police officer is in jail tonight accused of sexually abusing young girls. he was arrested over the weekend. that is where ktvu's christien kafton is right now. police say to arrest him they asked him to come in? >> reporter: investigators tell me as a law enforcement officers he had no idea he was under suspicion. the sexual assaults took place between 1992 and 2007 when richard scott mcleod worked in livermore's recreation and parks district. investigators are looking to see if that behavior carried on after he was hired as a police officer. >> nothing so far. we looked at everything and we haven't discovered anything

that he purperated any sexual crimes since departmenting from the kids -- departing from the kids zone. >> reporter: a victim came to them, her claims that richard scott mcleod initiated a sexual relationship with her when she was in junior high school checked out. they found other victims. he worked -- he was working for kids joan and he -- kids zone and he initiated a number of -- initiated a number of relationships. they had no idea that he had been using the program to target minors. . >> when we fire somebody we do a finger print check, background check. >> reporter: police say this is an ongoing investigation and they are still looking for additional victims. live in livermore, christien

kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. homeland security investigators were at a beach in santa cruz today, what started as a rescue turned into a discovery of a drug smuggling operation. ktvu's robert handa has more. >> reporter: we are just down the coast from where the boat is grounded on the edge of four mile beach. at times the waves were pounding the coast line and may have played a part on how this ended. the boat was attracted a lot of attention from surfers and law enforcement agencies, the sheriff's department and state parks and homeland security. it came in as a distress boat call. we saw agents carrying this marijuana on to a truck. the sheriff's department

believes the boat came from mexico and docked off four mile beach this morning and that drug runners may have unloaded several thousand pounds of marijuana but the boat cap sized and the crew fled, leaving four 20-pound bails of marijuana behind. surfers pointed out there had been warnings about dangerous surf today. >> i think it is a day for experienced people. good sized waves and seemed like a short break like that was foolish idea. >> reporter: the sheriff's department said they just finished searching and didn't find anymore drugs. department of justice took over the investigation and say the people have not been identified. live robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. groveland is fearing

another financial hit. the town is 24 miles from yosemite and a popular spot to visit. the rim wildfire already hurt business. now they are bracing for a possible coyote i don't tell -- yosemite closure. >> the rim fire, how awful that was, during labor day weekend. it is devastating for small businesses here that count on this season to make money to carry them through the year. >> the last time yosemite closed due to government shut down was 1995 and 1996. park stayed close for 27 days from november into january. the largest power producer that was shut down by the rim fire is now back up and running. the home power house is back online and generating clean energy. it was one of two facilities

effected by the wildfire. a bear kept police busy near sacramento over the weekend. several residents spotted the brown bear and called authorities. he was going from yard to yard, folks even snapped pictures. you can see the bear in the tree. police also spotted the bear. the last call to 911 came in last night. so far no reports have been made since then. the fog is coming in long the coast right now. you can see the fog working its way back in. it is in the forecast tonight. beautiful weekend. no fog. back now though. these were the highs today. warmer today. warmer again -- or cooler today, warmer tomorrow. the sprinkle activity this morning that trended temperatures down was cloudy

for most of us. as the weather system powers into the pacific northwest they are getting winter. heavy rain and big wind and snow. temperatures outside right now, most numbers in the 60s and low 70s. 73 fairfield. the next couple days a warming trend. high temperatures back into the 70s and 80s into the bay area weekend. we could see a return of the fire danger friday night as the winds -- winds come around out of the northeast. fire danger increases as well. looking for temperatures, over night lows, to be in the 40s in the cool spots. 50s for the rest of us. fog in the morning hours. tomorrow like today but warmer. warmer the next day. you will see this in the five- day forecast. increase in temperatures. hayward right now 66 degrees.
