blamed. democrats say that's no way to run the government. >> goodness they won't even sit down and have a discussion about this. >> i've seen the house republicans, time for photo ops. and these silly stunts should end. shutting down the government isn't kid stuff. >> reporter: president obama is showing no signs of backing down. today he said republicans are to blame for the federal shutdown. because of their effort to wipe out the health care law. >> republicans in the house of representatives refuse to fund the government unless we defunded or dis dismantled the affordable care act. they've shut down the government over an ideological

debate. >> the shutdown did not stop veterans from seeing the veteran's memorial. ktvu channel two news. fire crews reacted quickly to a a grass fire burning in a park. the fire burned in the regional parks and west of the el rancho verde park. it started shortly after three o which -- after three o -- after 3:00 this afternoon. the fire did not threaten any buildings. at this point it's not known how it started. three people were taken to the hospital after a munni bus and truck collided. fire crews arrived at the scene. the mission bus was trying to get around the car that was double parked when the accident happened. three people on the bus were hurt. none of the injuries appears to be life threatening. back down to the government

shut down. this is the first full day and already we're feeling the effects. thousands of federal employees in the bay area were told not to show up for work today. allie rasmus is here and tell us that it's not just hard for them. >> reporter: when many of them don't come to work it means they're not spending money here at the cafes, restaurants and shops in this neighborhood. >> the lovely arrangement we were going to deliver today. and now we're not. >> reporter: a delivery amanda amante had to put on hold. >> how much did you want to spend. >> reporter: because the woman that was supposed to receive it was a furloughed worker who did not show up today. >> just the whole idea demoralizing that's what it is. >> reporter: she is was so frustrated she put this sign outside her shop. >> this is the way i feel. we're not you know i can't respect either one of them. they're not working as a team. >> reporter: the shops and cafes at the oakland city

weeks, their business will really day care a hit. allie rasmus, ktvu news. and people who booked a trip to alcatraz were standing in line waiting for a refund. that left many tourists who had made plans months ago very disappointed. >> i'm a little upset with the republicans, with the government in general but it's disappointing that petty arguing, inconveniences american citizens, tax paying citizens. and all the 800,000 workers that are being furloughed. >> tourists can get refunds or book other tours across the bay. nearly 1,000 federal workers are now on unpaid furloughs. though in washington, d.c. lawmakers are still getting paid. some representatives say they're going to donate their salaries. palo alto congresswoman said this about republicans who are now just announcing they're

a camry may have been taken to an auto body shop with damage to the front bumper. fremont police announced today thanks to an an anonymous donation, a $10,000 reward has been offered to find that driver. now to ongoing coverage of the b.a.r.t. negotiations. we will show you the count down clock. you can see that b.a.r.t. and its unions have five days left to reach a deal before possible strikes. talks in the b.a.r.t. labor dispute met today. the talks focused on financial issues. the two sides are said to be far apart on the key issues here of wages and benefits. b.a.r.t. tells us that talks are scheduled for almost every day until the two sides reach a contract agreement or that 60 day cooling off period expires on october 10th. tonight at 6:00, tom vacar exploring the war of words

new information tonight on an explosion. we learned the problem started a week ago with some criminal activity. well tonight we sent ktvu's tom vacar to investigate and he found that authorities said it was a cooper theft that was to blame for that power outage. tom now reports on the chain of events that resulted in last night's power failure that also led to injuries. >> reporter: today 11 buildings are still without power. three of them containing classrooms where 10 classs have been cancelled so far. >> we will get together and study. that's kind of what we do at berkeley, you still study. >> luckily i was off campus. but the whole house was getting headaches from whatever was

leaking from the explosion. >> reporter: going together, those buildings and classrooms will be powered by generators. >> it's not just the buildings it's the people. >> reporter: thieves stole cooper wire from a remote underwire volt. it flattened a normally round power cable. the uc electrical crews thought they had repaired the damage, a explosion happened last night. two hours later as power was being restored, a power vault exploded injuring five. >> we do not yet know whether the damage done by the theft of the cooper wire was the cause of the explosion. >> reporter: the thieves are directly responsible, civilly and criminally to those injured. >> i know that our police department is going to leave no

stone unturned. >> reporter: all for just a few feet of cable worth $3.20 a pound. tom vacar, ktvu news. a 19-year-old man from san francisco is in custody. police arrested page at about 6:00 last night after he was identified as the suspect. the shooting happened last saturday night in antioch. 24-year-old bragg of brentwood was killed, another man was wounded. the suspect is being held at the county jail in lieu of $2 million bail. police have not said what led to the shooting. san mateo police are asking for the public's help in identifying bank robbery suspect. this man is accused of holding up a wells fargo at noon. he approached a teller and demanded money while carrying a device that appeared to have a red detonating button. he got away with an undisclosed amount of money. the suspect is described as middle-aged and heavy set. anyone with information is

75, 75 in walnut creek. nice looking afternoon out there. tomorrow's temperatures come up a few degrees. a little bit of warming each day as we go toward the bay area weekend. slightly warmer tomorrow, the extended forecast is for warmer and breezy. and of course the breezy is going to come from the northeast or offshore. and that will get you fire danger. so fire danger is going to come up significantly on thursday, friday. i think thursday and friday night are going to be the nastiest nights. not so much the heat but the wind component. the winds look like they want to blow overnight as we go into thursday night and into friday. so we're tracking that for you. as we go into the next few days and the air is going to do what it did last week. they're almost the exact same pattern. this one will see a little bit more wind. you get the nice daytime highs coast and warm to hot temperatures inland. so it's going to be very beautiful thursday into saturday. take a peak out and you can see the forecast for the san jose area. as we see as it pops in here

someone beat these two dogs to death with a shovel then burned and buried their bodies. it's a story we first brought to you on the ktvu morning news. the owner of the two dogs that were killed says she is devastated. >> ktvu's john sasaki live in brentwood with what those two dogs did that actually made the killing of them legally justified. john-- >> reporter: frank and gasia this is the area where the dogs were found. they headed to this trail to a near by ranch and that is where something went horribly wrong. what happened here at this brentwood ranch on saturday was bloody and horrible. >> all i have left is their

ashes in a bag. >> he beat them to death with a shovel. he took their bodies to his place of employment. used their equipment to dig a hole. put those dogs in that hole, poured gasoline over them and burned them to nothing. >> reporter: the dogs escaped from the family home on spring haven court on saturday and ended up on a ranch on creek road. that's where randy chris says the dogs attacked some egg laying chicklings and ducks. >> the dogs came in and killed all of them. >> reporter: his son beat the two dogs to death with a shovel. >> basically wild animals running lose in the neighborhood and it's really the responsibility of the owner. i think everybody is aware of that. >> reporter: county neighborhood services says killing the dogs was not a crime. >> killing an animal that is

attacking poultry is legal in the state of california. >> reporter: but what stunned the owners is that christ did not get in contact with the owners after killing the dogs. >> i'm devastated. i'm broken. it will never see -- i will never see them again. the dog owners decided against a vigil because of threats made online against jonathan christ and his family. christ told us he has been placed on administrative leave because of this incident. live in brentwood. more details now, according to california law anyone can kill the dog that is found in the act of killing, wounding or persistently pursuing livestock or poultry. brentwood police are now investigating. fire investigators tell us the cause of a fire this

morning is being declared undetermined. flames broke out shortly after 2:00 a.m. in a shed used as a classroom at trinity christian on marshal street. no one was hurt and only the shed was damaged. investigators say they found no evidence pointing to a cause but they also say there's no reason to believe that foul play was involved. two suspects accused of killing a man they lured to an atm are eligible for the death penalty. prosecutors have charged 21- year-old alexis aresiga and andrea mcfall. the victim 62-year-old wava was found unconscious in his car at about 4:30 last saturday morning and later died. police said he had been shot in the head. petaluma police are warning car owners. in all of september a total of

the national park service you see them there, putting up barricades at the lincoln memorial this morning. the last government shut down almost 20 years ago lasted for 28 days and set off a public outcry over all the parks being closed. and there was more disappointment for visitors to the national mall over at the world war ii memorial. the honor flight network brought more than 90 world war ii veterans from mississippi to washington today so they could reflect at the memorial. some members of congress and their staff actually moved the barriers so that the veterans could get an up close look. and some vets didn't mince words about the impasse in washington. >> well, we have less brains in washington right now than we've ever had since we've been a nation. >> reporter: a spokeswoman for the national park service says the barricades were later put back up. and the government shutdown has even pulled the plug on the national zoo's popular panda camp and other web cameras. the zoo is closed to the

an alert employee helped catch martinez of concord. officers say the employee had reported seeing the suspect peering into cars with a flashlight and that stolen property and burglary tools were found in the suspect's position. two cars in the hotel had been broken into. they're now checking for other possible thefts. the 49ers new stadium is one step closer to being finished for next season. there's been plenty of stages of construction that have generated awe among fans but today, boy today was extra special. new at 5:00, robert handa joins us from levi stadium where son fans got to see their own seats being installed today, robert. >> reporter: that's right we say it and a lot of fans say it as well. whenever they look at the new stadium you can't believe how fast it's gone up. and today another milestone. levi stadium will hold 68,400 seats. with 48,000 of them being put in the lower bowl all designed

boy check out this video, new york police are examining this cam video of a confrontation between an angry motorcycle driver and a family in an suv. one appears to intentionally slow down and is bumped by the suv. that led to a complete stop and some bikers reportedly started to slash the tires of the suv. the horrified driver then plowed right through the scene. hit three bikers, severely injuring one. the angry group then traced the vehicle for miles and caught up with the driver in traffic. >> one of the bicyclists he got off his bike and he started attacking the person in the range rover, breaking the windows. after they got him out of his car they beat him up. >> reporter: the man had his face slashed but is expected to
