the fire must have been burning for a while because before anyone called 911 consider how big it was. the chief tells us six units were likely destroyed and all six lower units sustained water damage. >> firefighters are facing dangerous conditions tonight. a red flag warning is taking effect right now. mark tamayo is here to tell us more. >> the strongest winds of the fire season right now, a concern for tonight and friday morning. take a look at the wind speeds right now. these are sustained reports. winds northeast in santa rosa 15 miles per hour. fairfield, winds out of the north at 20 miles per hour. 5:00 p.m. wind gusts 38 miles per hour. the winds coming in out of this directioning and that trend continues for tonight and

friday morning. more reports for sfo, san jose, winds 15 miles per hour. the fire danger, the red flag warning in place right now. started -- right now, 6:00 p.m. for the north bay hills, the east bay hills and the santa cruz mountains. winds pick up, topping 40 miles per hour for the bay area hills. above 1,000 feet, delta. low humidity levels 10-20%. coming up we will look at the timing of the winds, when the warning expires and highlight the warmest day of the week. >> because of that fire danger and the concern over it tonight prompted some areas to add extra fire crews. ktvu's john fowler is here now with that part of the story. >> reporter: station 87. the most recent of 7 contra costa county fire stations that have been closed because of budget cuts.

it is across the street here in pittsburg from open space and homes. a neighborhood that tonight because of these conditions is in peril. >> reporter: gusty dry winds, dry grass and brush. snug against this neighborhood where people tonight are worried. >> reporter: he lived here 30 years. fire station 87 a one minute drive away. the next nearest these firefighters at station 86. a crucial 6 minute drive farth away. -- further away. >> initial response is critical to keep it a small grass fire. >> reporter: he says they warned supervisors about the dangerous. one of seven fire stations closed this year, $17 million in budget cuts. because of the extreme fire

weather now -- >> today we will open it, 8:00 p.m. tonight,er short term during -- tonight, short term during the red flag warning. >> if they could open it for one day they could open it forever. >> reporter: the county said it may close another fire station but last week backed away from it. staffing is 2/3 of safe levels and they say disaster is just a spark away. reporting live, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. we are counting down the days till bart workers could walk off the job for a second time. there are 7 days left for them to strike a new contract deal. the two sides have only come to one agreement about how pensions will be handled but not how much that will cost. bart and the unions stay haven't come close to agreeing

on three sticking points, pay, pension costs and healthcare. >> yesterday the unions made their third counter proposal on the economic package. and so far bart has yet to give us a new economic package in the last 53 days. >> we are still split on four year contract versus a three year contract. that is very important to us. >> the two sides are split on the length of the contract as you heard there. the unions want three years, bart wants 4 years. >> commuters are not shy about pressing their feeling -- expressing their feelings. ktvu's mike mibach is live with what bart commuters want. >> reporter: voicing their frustration, saying time to shake hands and strike a deal. >> reporter: bay area rapid transit owning and closing

ready for the playoffs. >> reporter: today workers were trying to make this aging stadium presentation. the biggest changes up here, the third deck is no longer covered with a tarp. that adds 13,000 seats. all 48,000 tickets are sold for friday and saturday's game against the tigers. >> added deck should really help. when it gets loud the place feels like an earthquake here. >> reporter: you can still get tickets from online websites but they will cost you. you see that area in left field, that is standing room and people are asking $60 a piece for standing room. with so many people here the question is will the stadium's plumbing hold up. three times this season it backed up and over flowed. officials say the back ups were caused by people flushing

there are new developments out of washington, d.c. where this car chase ended in gunfire. capitol hill locked down and the woman behind the wheel of the car was shot and killed bitless and secret service and the -- killed by police and secret service. >> ktvu's gasia mikaelian spoke with a congressman about the quick reaction of capitol police. >> reporter: joining us now is east bay congressman. you were at your capitol building office today, tell us what happened. >> i was in the office with my staff and there is a paging

system in the capital and it went off and we were told there was gunfire on the capitol grounds and stay away from windows and doors and shelter in place. it was terrifying. we did and for an hour we remained there. >> we were able to show viewers on. >> joe: at noon while you were speaking to us live the scene outside your building. did you know there were so many police and so much activity outside of the building where you were? >> no. we did not. we were working away and the grounds has three house buildings on the house side, independence avenue. not until the paging system went off could we watch on television the chaos outside. but we were largely just trying to stay safe and away from the doors and windows. >> reporter: have you seen

aperture video that came out this afternoon of the driver idriving away from -- driving away from police, have you seen that? what did you think? >> reporter: i watched that video off the floor of the house with a number of other members. you know, it was disturbing. it gave you chills to see the police trying to stop the driver and just the araddic driving. -- erratic driving. it reminds you they stand guard and put their lives on the line every day. we are grateful for them but we are reminded how grateful we are when you watch that video and you see they are on the front line in the way of danger every day. >> reporter: today's incident comes in the middle of a government shut down.

how will not today effect the work that government still has to do? >> these police officers, the brave men and women who stand guard, they are going unpaid right now so they are putting their lives on the line and they are unpaid, that is an example of how urgent is it to get our house in order for us to pass a budget and end the games the republican leadership are playing right now. fund all of the government and get every federal worker back to work and make sure they are also paid. >> despite the differences i am sure there is relief tonight. thank you for joining us. attorneys for the suspect in the sierra lamar case are seeking more times. defense attorneys say they need more time to go over documents.

the judge scheduled a status update for november 15. she was last seen on march 16 of 2012. he was arrested on may 21 and charged with kidnapping and murder. he hasn't yet entered a plea. her body has never been found and volunteers still hold searches every saturday. a new development involving a pit bug attack. the two dogs that malled a 10- year-old boy have been euthanized. he suffered serious injuries after the attack. they decided today the dogs should be put down and the owners decided not to appeal. her son face as series of surgeries to repair damage to his head and face. the winds into pick up right now. they continue to be the big concern for tonight and friday

morning. fire danger is a big concern as well. lot to be concerned about. red flag warning if the bay area hills, north bay, east bay, mountains and this was the view earlier this afternoon. peak that over 2500 feet. very strong gusts expected for tonight. and early tomorrow morning. as far as the current wind reports right now, they have been picking up. fairfield sustained 20 miles per hour. oakland 14 miles per hour. and more neighborhoods, san jose 15 and sfo sea breeze kicking in 18 miles per hour. winds pick up tonight, especially after 8:00 p.m. and into friday morning. wind advisory in place till 3:00 p.m. friday morning for the north bay hills, east bay hills. these are the winds that are boosting the fire danger. i expect strongest winds 7:00 p.m. tonight till 7:00 a.m.
