problems in the area. we will talk about that throughout the the morning. it is friday, october 4th i'm pam cook. >> and it's surprising drivers. good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check your weather and traffic. steve is out today but we have rosemary. >> yes, good morning, to you. i think the winds begin to lighten up. by the afternoon we will be breezy. 39 miles an hour right now the gusts in fair field. 24 for livermore. 28 in napa which has lighted up just a bit. i am seeing a little bit of wind on the east side of santa rosa. maybe a little breezy outside your door. in the hills is where it's really, really whipping. 54 in the oakland hills north. 25 miles an hour in the oakland

hills south. 30 at atolls peak. and in and around kentfield about 23 hurricane feet. so the dry north winds will continue for today. dying down just a bit for the afternoon. the red flag warning will stay. 64 in oakland. 66sfo. 64 half-moon bay. these numbers a lot warmer than they were 24 hours ago and it has to do with the wind. the wind stirring the atmosphere. 84 in santa rosa. sunny and warmer for the afternoon. i think again dying down just a bit for those of us in and around concord. redwood city 80 degrees. a gorgeous beach day. good morning, sal. good morning, rosemary. the wind will be an issue for drivers as well.

if you are driving be careful you might see tree debris in the way. there is a little bit of a backup in some of the lanes. the literring lights usually go on at this time. once you make it on to this span it might be a little gusty. livermore is already getting slow. no major problems on 880 nearby. let's go back to the desk. a red flag warning remains in effect. dry conditions and low hum. >> reporter: those wind gusts toppled trees. really creating headaches for folks this morning. one of the city crew workers

showed up here. they will be cleaning up this mess. there is a tree limb that fell into the roadway. so again crews coming here to remove it. this red flag warning is in effect for spots above 1,000 feet in the east bay hills. just down the road on skyline boulevard northbound crews will be here for the next several hours chopping it up and taking it away. they are trying to get it clear before classes start. firefighters from alameda county in oakland fire were busy overnight. gusts of up to 50 miles an hour. toppled trees snagged wires sparking spot fires. pg&e had to cut power while fire crews snuffed out the flames. parts of alameda and santa cruz counties are part of this red flag zone as are the mt. diablo

and henry koa state park. officials want people to call 911 immediately if you see smoke today. if something sparks, it could go up quickly. gusts 35-45 miles an hour will go from the east. a reversal of the normal wind pattern. we could see damage that we haven't seen before. barbecuing in parks is prohibited in areas effected by the warning. that red flag warning in effect until 6:00 tomorrow morning. live from the oakland hills i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:05. we have an update on that grass fire in contra costa county near the oil refinery in north concord. the fire is out. however, a red flag warning covers the area and the fire danger remains. ktvu claudine wong is live in contra costa county to tell us the current conditions and what it's like out there right now. >> reporter: winds still blowing out here. we talk about that red flag

warning. that increases the fear about fire danger. take a look behind me you can see the trees blowing and in the background there is the refinery. the fire this morning was actually between us and that refinery in the marsh land area. to give you a look at the video earlier this morning. the video was shot about 1:00 this morning. and at the time firefighters still fighting it it has since been put out. contra costa county firefighters came to assist but we are told the refinery firefighters had it under control. we are not sure how that little grass fire that marsh land fire started this morning. but it was going for a little bit and there were reports of dense smoke in the area and certainly people seeing that glow. and throughout the day and through tomorrow when you have windy conditions like we see now, certainly that has everyone on high alert. extra fire station has been opened in the pittsburgh area. certainly people nee do be aware of the conditions and certainly you can't miss the wind out here this morning.

live in concord claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. two people survived a tree crashing on to their pickup truck last night in napa. that happened at 10:30 on solano avenue. the tree landed on the hood of the truck with a branch going through the windshield narrowly missing the driver and passenger. they were shaken and needed some medical treatment at the scene. police are blaming high winds in the area. the roadway was closed for hours as crews removed that debris. over night gusty winds helped fuel a grass fire in napa county. the fire is burning near lake berryessa. it started at 8:30 last night. right now it is 75% contained. no evacuation orders but some roads in the area will be closed until the fire is fully contained. and on twitter some people as far away as san francisco tweeted they could smell the smoke from that fire.

time 6:07. later today prayer groups will gather at three different vigils. they will hold an outdoor prayer service for justin valdez. he was shot to death after getting off am muni train. then the prayer group will go to third and harrison to remember jonathan denver. the 25-year-old dodger fan was stabbed to death last week after going to a giant's game. and they will pray for the man killed in the western division. this week's explosion and power black out on the cal campus is tied to the theft of copper wire from an off campus power substation. berkeley police say they now deal with copper thefts on a regular basis. the thieves commonly cash the metal in at recycling centers.

possibly good news for those thousands of federal workers who have been on furloughs. how they may be able to get all the money they lost back during the government shut down. plus a private pledge that house speaker john boehner made to fellow republicans. and what we are learning about the woman who was shot and killed after leading police on a chase through washington. the reason her boyfriend called investigators last year. good morning. it's windy out there. and it could effect you driving across bay area bridges like the san mateo bridge. use caution. breezy and relatively mild. coming up when i expect those winds will peak. we will talk about the fire danger and when i expect it to subside.

a woman driver with a one- year-old daughter in the backseat was shot and killed after leading police on a child chase around washington d.c.. investigators now still searching for a motive for what happened. the woman did not have a criminal record but reportedly suffered from depression. ktvu kyla campbell is in washington, d.c. now to tell us what she knows about the suspect. >> reporter: police believe the

driver is 34-year-old marian kerry. that one-year-old girl was in this car as kerry slammed the gates of the white house. led police on a chase and crashed her car. police shot and killed kerry and rescued her daughter from the car. she is in protective custody this morning. kerry lives in connecticut. investigators swarmed her apartment complex. police were halted in their tracks when they found a letter with a white substance. it was sent for testing and they were able to search her apartment for clues. and of course now the investigation turns toward motive. kerry's boyfriend is revealing information about why she might have been trying to get to president barack obama. i'm working on that story for you for 7:15. live in washington, kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. today the house of representatives could vote on a proposal that effectsth furloughed federal workers. it would give them retroactive pay when the government fully

reopens. senate democrats are restating they will not reopen some parts of the government as republicans are proposing. new york senator chuck schumer says quote you can't fall for that legislative blackmail or it will get worse and worse. republican insiders say house speaker john baner has pledged he -- john boehner has pledged he intends to use a combination of democrat oak and republican votes to increase the debt limit. he is trying to reassure both sides. two dozen cemeteries and memorials overseas have also been closed including the world war ii memorial in normandy, france. furloughed federal workers are not the only ones feelings impact of the government shut down. businesses that depend on those workers to buy coffee, lunch, or other things during the workdays are hurting.

restaurants around the san francisco federal building say they are seeing a lot fewer customers. and at least some of them worry they may have to cut back the hours of their workers. and that would cut back the spending of those workers. there are growing concerns that political gridlock in washington may hurt the hungry. the government shut down could lead to a cut back in federal funding for food banks here in the bay area and elsewhere. there is also a spike in depend as we get closer to the holiday season. but the hopes of shortage can still be averted since a lot of the money the food banks get come from private donations. the shut downs are also creating serious situations for cancer patients. the national institute of health is turning people away who want to take part in clinical trials. almost 75% of all of the nih workers have been furloughed now. the patients already enrolled in cancer studies will keep getting care. but people who have not

finished the enrollment process, right now they are in limbo wondering if they will be able to take part in the treatment studies. the san francisco man charged with running a billion dollar online drug market is due in federal court at 9:00 this morning. 29-year-old ross william is accused of creating what was essentially the amazon.com of illegal goods and services. prosecutors say he attempted to arrange the murder of a man that threatened to reveal personal data about silk road users. investigators believe he may have also tried to arrange other hits. san francisco police arrested him at the glen park library earlier this week. the fbi says he used a software program designed for the navy that allows people to navigate the web anonymously. it is being used by drug dealers, child pornographers and hackers that have carved out a dark web space.

now anyone can down load the software for free. it is the key to unlocking the deep web which is invisible to mainstream search engines. financial transactions are done in bit coin which is a hidden currency that started several years ago. your time 6:16. a burger that is supposed to honor heavy metal music is causing a big controversy in chicago. it's in honor of ghost bc. the owner created a burger that is topped with red, white -- what looks like a communion wafer on top. some people say they like this burger. others say the burger is offensive and say the company should leave religion off their menu. >> it's just a hamburger. that's it. >> i do find it offensive. i would not go to that sort of establishment. >> the ghost boringly be on that menu all month. by the way it costs about $17.

down later this morning and into the afternoon. will remain breezy but not as windy as we are this morning. but we are very dry. it will be really hard for the hills to recover in the overnight hours. this is why we will continue with that red flag warning for heightened fire danger through tomorrow morning. the winds right now 24 miles an hour in fairfield. 15 in concord. napa reporting 17. 13 in oakland. notice the arrows coming in from the north and northeast at times. so it's an offshore breeze. those dry winds will drive up our temperatures for the afternoon. and because of those winds, we are not as chilly as we started yesterday morning. wide spread 60s around the bay area. unless you're in areas like morgan hill, gilroy, santa cruz. these areas i'm picking up very light winds to calm conditions. and it's a chilly start for you. we are talking upper 40s to mid 50s. but if you have the wind, chances are, you're a lot warmer than where you were 24 hours ago. 65 in santa rosa.

the extended forecast here temperatures will continue to warm into saturday. a near repeat on sunday. a slight cool down begins along the coast and along the bay. cooler conditions as we get back to work. back to you. today there is a job fair for a new and unusual restaurant in concord. the lazy dog restaurant is under construction at the willow shopping center. it's scheduled to open late next month. the restaurant is working for 200 workers. people interested in working can interview at a center that is set up just outside the restaurant's location and that is the old elle tour roadway doe. there is more fallout from the government shut down that could effect car sales. eta workers that would normally conduct fuel economy tests are on furlough. that could mean cars that are still in the rating process cannot be old. auto makers do run their own

tests and it's not clear if that will do. time 6:21. hundreds of homes will be under voluntary evacuation. the drill that is scheduled to get under way. i was not allowed to wear that at school because it promoted gun violence. >> controversy at a southern california high school. the reason a high school principal is apologizing to one of its students. when i first got shingles it started on my back.

welcome back to the morning news. 6:24 is the time. a man from redwood city will be sentenced next month. it was part of a senior prank intended to scare the teacher. a jury deliberated for about 90 minutes before convicting him. he could receive a sentence of life in prison. now he's currently behind bars on $1 million bail. police are hoping someone recognizes the three people in this video. take a look. they are wanted for attempted murder. police say surveillance video shows the two men and one woman at a restaurant and lounge on september 8th. it was taken hours before a 48- year-old man was found badly beaten. he's still in the hospital with

a head injury. anyone who knows the suspects is asked to call san pablo police. crash involving a school bus a truck and suv is being investigated in san jose. that happened at about 4:00 yesterday afternoon. the chp says the truck was turning left on east julian street near highway 101 when it hit a bus carrying students from san jose high school. time is 6:26. a high school in southern california the officials there are apologizing after they forced a 16-year-old student to remove her shirt. it was am national rifle association shirt and -- it was a national rifle association shirt. and she wore it last month. she was forced to change her shirt or be suspended. the shirt featured a buck, an american flag, and sill silhouette of a hunter.

time. they will be spending quite some time chopping up that tree. live i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. tomorrow the kentfield fire district and the marin county sheriffs office will conduct a fire drill. they do this drill every year in the kent woodlands neighborhood. about 200 homes will take part. it all starts at 9:00 tomorrow morning. firefighters say these homes are especially vulnerable to fire danger. san jose firefighters say an early morning attic fire likely burned for an hour before a family of six escaped. we have new video of that fire. ktvu katie utehs spoke with the family and explains how they got out. katie. >> reporter: the mother who lives in this home smelled smoke and at first the two adults who live here didn't think it was their home on fire. but as they ran outside, they then saw the smoke billowing from the rooftop.

[ inaudible ] >> too much smoke. >> reporter: the male homeowner ran back inside, grabbed his cell phone and called 911 around 2:30 this morning. then as the family of six escaped, wind whipped through the attic vents and flames burst outs of the roof as -- burst out of this roof. it seems like an eternity as he watched his home burn. >> i say -- [ inaudible ] the flames go out. neighborhood all wake up. >> reporter: fire crews say they responded within five minutes but the gusty winds made the fire dangerous to battle. they were able to cover some of the valuables on the first floor as they began to fight the fire. but as we join the family to walk through the home, you can see just the amount of damage to the second floor and the

attic. investigators say the fire appears to be accidental and they will turn the home over to insurance agents. the family tells me that they do have family in the area and they will go live with them until the home can be repaired. live until san jose katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. memorial service will be held today for a san francisco high school student killed in a violent crash a week ago. police say 16-year-old kevin song was riding in a mini van when a mer say doze going -- mercedes going 80 miles an hour slammed into them. the suspect has been charged with vehicle manslaughter. kevin was a member of the rtoc at the high school. a memorial service will be held in petaluma today to remember polly class. the 12-year-old girl was kidnapped and murdered 20 years ago this week. thousands of people turned out

for her memorial in 1993 including the governor. today's service will be at the petaluma community center. and overflow crowd can watch the service at walnut park on a giant screen. that park was polly's favorite playground. a federal judge is due to fake up san jose's lawsuit against major league baseball. the city is claiming baseball has imposed illegal roadblocks in san jose's efforts to bring the oakland a's to the south bay. major league baseball will ask am judge to throw out that out lawsuit. the shut down of the federal government may hamper this case because the lawsuit is being heard in federal court. excitement is building in oakland for tonight's first game of the american league division series in oakland. the final preparations are under way antebiggest change you can see it happened yesterday. the tarps on the third deck were taken off. that added 13,000 seats to the stadium. officials say all 48,000 tickets are sold out for both

welcome back. time now 6:42. tropical storm karen is aiming now for the gulf coast. the clouds are building. those waves are crashing in beach cities all across the south. tropical storm karen may become the first name storm to really wreak havoc on the u.s.. there are other concerns about whether there will be enough help out there. our reporter social security social security is joining us live. good morning, sun learn. what is it like out there now? >> reporter: she is currently producing winds now at about 60 miles an hour. that was decreased this morning. karen is expected though to move rapidly through the gulf and likely intensify potentially into a hurricane

late saturday or sunday morning near the coast. residents here in florida are bracing. a hurricane watch is in effect from grand isle and west. louisiana has declared a state of emergency. the storm poses a big challenge for fee ha. many workers were furloughed this week due to the government shut down and now they are being called back to work in anticipation of this storm. president obama has been briefed about this storm and instructed his team to make sure the resources and most importantly the staffing is in place to handle the effects if this is a devastating storm. >> sunlen serfaty, thank you for that update. i appreciate it. continuing coverage of the red flag warning in parts of the bay area. that fire danger could be high today because of high winds. ktvu claudine wong is in pittsburg to tell us how fire stations are responding. >> reporter: good morning. we are at station 87 here in pittsburg. you can see the lights are on

and this fire station is open for business. that is good news this morning. because it was closed back in july because of budget cuts. because of this red flag warning today and tomorrow they have temporarily reopened the station and that will help with response times in the event of any kind of fire. contra costa county firefighters did not need to respond to that fire because they have their own fire department and that fire was put out in a short amount of time. there is a red flag warning and that has firefighters concerned. they are talking about the try conditions. the wind that -- >> we've already seen a lot of erratic fire behavior this year and here we are in october. typically late october is when california experiences some of

northbound 280. now let's go to rosemary. it's a breezy start to the day. because of it some areas crystal clear. did you see the shots sal had. the winds have died down just a bit. at least for the time being. we are 20 minutes away from the official sunrise. the winds will be easing up as we get in through the second half of the morning. should be breezy but not as windy. right now the winds in concord 1 15 miles an hour. 13 in oakland. notice the arrow coming from the north and east. 12 miles an hour. fairfield reporting a northerly breeze at 25. these are sustained winds. gusts could be anywhere from 5- 10 miles above this. the fire on the east side you can see as the winds push this direction if you are downwind

you may be smelling that smoke today. so areas right around even napa i'm going to say down into vallejo. benicia. if you do smell the smoke, it's a good idea to stay indoors. if you can avoid that out door activity. the temperatures and the wind driving our temperatures this morning. wide spread 60s around the area. napa in the 40s yesterday morning. 64 outside your door. you will notice that. anywhere from 20-25-degrees warmer at this hour. the last half hour we went east. let's go to the peninsula this time around. 58 in belmont. 56 in foster city. what i am seeing if you do not have that breeze outside your door you will have it. it's a cool start in santa cruz with light winds there. for the afternoon today temperatures will be warmer than yesterday. by several degrees. 83 in sonoma for the afternoon with mostly sunny skies. 82 for san rafael.
