breaking news out of oakland. a really bad crash shut down part of the freeway. the latest details we are just getting into our newsroom. >> wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour in the oakland hills. we'll tell you about a red flag warning in effect in part of the bay area some scary moments from san jose. we'll let you hear from the san jose family who managed to escape these flames.

a lockdown during a government shutdown. we'll tell you about a frightening incident at the heart of the u.s. capital. morning on 2 starts now. >> good morning. welcome to morning on 2. this is part of the sights that people are seeing. this is a look at skyline boulevard. tree limbs are down. high wind gusts. good morning. welcome. i'm tory campbell. >> and good morning, i'm dave clark >> let's check weather and traffic. steve is out today but we have rosemary. >> dry and breezy for the day. tara is in the east bay hill. she'll have what's going on. but until tomorrow morning, winds are going to be breezy coming in the northeast.

that's to be aware of, that's going to be very dry over the next couple of days. the winds had begin to die down later this afternoon. boy, they are howling and in some cases, 36 miles per hour in fairfield. 29 at the livermore airport. napa reporting gusts to 28 miles per hour. so dealing with this, you should get out on to the roadways. you may find tree debris in your neighborhood as well. some of the gusts have reached 54 miles per hour in oakland over the hill. i also saw a 54 mile-per-hour gust in and around middle peak, about 2300 feet in the north bay hills. these winds definitely moving and they will continue through the morning hours, letting up a little bit later today. winds are going to be breezy. temperatures, 56. mid-60-n napa. i keep pointing to napa this morning.

because napa is breezy 64 half moon bay and plenty of sunshine expected for this afternoon. here is a look at the highs for today. we are talking 70s to low to programs a few mid-80s out there from the coast around the bay and inland. 83 for fairfield. 81 hayward. 72 mostly sunny in pacifica. if you like the warm weather, this is not it. tomorrow will be even wetter. we'll have a look at the highs coming up. good morning. right now, we have a major injury crash on 580 eastbound that's headed towards san leandro at fruitvale. this crash involves a pedestrian that was hit on the freeway. that pedestrian was taken to the hospital. he is described as a male who was, for some reason, in the lane. we have reports that this person was either running or walking around in the middle of the freeway. we were able to get some

pictures of the crash. here they are right now. this is on 580. this is a major injury crash. the 580 eastbound getting only by on the right shoulder. again, this is a major injury crash on 520 at fruitvale. this is a sigalert. not only with a pedestrian seriously injured but other people in the cars were injured as well. some of the traffic is getting by on the ride shoulder. this is a big mess. if you are trying to get to san leandro, don't use 580. use 880 instead because this is going to be here for a while. let's go to the bay bridge. traffic here is backed up for about a 5 to 10 minute delay. let's go back to the test glk thank you, sal. dozens of branches and twigs covered the road in east bay hills early this morning. this is just one area hit by strong winds overnight.

firefighters and pg&e crews have been scrambling to put the fire out. tara moriarty is live in the hills which is covered by a red flag warning. >> reporter: overnight, the winds were whipping and knocked down trees and limbs here on skyline boulevard behind me. you can see the branches, huge branches here. cars are having to navigate around them in the roadway. it has been a very busy morning for city crews. the red flag warning is above 5000 feet in the hills. north bound lanes are completely blocked by this large fallen tree. crews will be here for the next several hours, chopping it up and taking it away. they are trying it get that cleared before traffic starts. firefighters from alameda county and the city of oakland were busy overnight. gusts up to 50 miles per hour in the oakland hills which

toppled trees, snagging power lines. parts of alameda, santa cruz and santa clara county, both 5000 feet are also part of this red flag zone. fire officials say they want people to call 911 immediately if you see smoke today. a fire sparks, it could go up quickly. this is a reversal of the normal wind pattern. that red flag warning is in effect until 6:00 tomorrow morning. we want to mention that, this weekend, southern california is supposed to get hammered by santa ana winds. we could see some fire activities down there. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. two people are okay even though a tree crashed on to their pickup truck last night in napa. it happened at 10:30 on solano

low relative humidity combined with the seasonal trying of the vegetation, this does make it a critical time for fire control. >> on twitter, some people as far away as san francisco tweeted they can smell the smoke from that fire. new this morning, san jose firefighters say a family of six barely escaped an overnight attic fire because somebody smelled smoke. ktvu's katy utems has the photos. >> reporter: yes. a mother who lives here ran outside after smelling smoke. when she saw it was coming from her own home, she ran inside to grab her own children and elderly parents.

back inside, they grabbed a cell phone and called 911 around 2:30. then the family of six escaped as flames burned through the roof. as you can see from this individual joe shot by a neighbor. firefighters went on the defensive but were able to save some of the valuables. >> the second floor, all out. >> this was burning, burning, burning. >> reporter: investigators say that the fire was accidental and may have been electrical in nature. they are turning it over to the insurance company. now, they estimate it burned for about an hour before the huff family smelled the smoke and was able to evacuate. they say that the smoke alarms didn't make much of a difference because they were at a lower level and the smoke, as

you know, rises. it's not setting up the smoke alarm. really fortunate that the family smelled the smoke. the family tells me that they do have relatives in the san jose area and they will be staying with those family members until their house can be repaired. live in san jose, katy utems, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, katy. the c hp is investigating a deadly accidents on highway 101 in santa clara county. it happened shortly after midnight north of the lawrence expressway. a man on a motorcycle hit some debris on the freeway, crashed and was then run over by a car. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver who hit the motorcyclist is cooperating with authorities. and berkeley police say they are dealing with a growing number of copper theft. investigators believe that this week's explosion and power blackout on the cal campus is tied to the theft of copper wire from an offcampus power

sub station. berkeley police say they now deal with copper theft on a regular basis both on the cal campus and across the city. the thieves cash in the metals at recycling centers. time now is 7:10. the san francisco man accused of running a billion dollars worth of drug trade known as silk road is due in front a judge. he is accused of creating what some call the amazon.com of illegal goods and services. he attempted to arrange the murder of a man who attempted to reveal personal information of the users of silk road. investigators believe that albright may have arranged other hits. san francisco police arrested him earlier this week at the glen park library. the fbi says that he used a software programoriginally designed for the u.s. navy.

breaking news in oakland. a pedestrian was hit on treatway eastbound on 580 near fruitvale avenue. a person was reported running and in the lanes. we are not sure why that person was there. that person was transported to

highland hospital in very serious condition. eastbound 580, most of the lanes are blocked here as police are doing an investigation. you can see that they are out there measuring lanes. westbound 580 will be affected by people looking. eastbound, some of the lanes are getting by but we still don't recommend using eastbound 580. use 880 as an alternate. let's go back to the desk. chaos at the u.s. capitol. on yesterday's ktvu at noon, we told you about the situation. it ended up being a female driver who was shot and killed after leading police on a wild chase through the hearts of washington, d.c. turns out a one-year-old girl was in the back seat of that car but she was not armed. today, investigators will continue to look for a motive. we have new information this morning about that female driver. ktvu's kayla campbell is in

washington, d.c. to tell us about a possible trip to see the president from the suspect. >> reporter: police say that 34- year-old miriam carey of connecticut crashed through the security wall and led police on this chase which put the capitol on lockdown. she eventually crashed her car and police shot and killed carry. they rescued her one-year-old daughter from the car. she is in protective custody. cnn had reports from her boyfriend. he called authorities. she said that she believes that president barack obama had surveil happens on her home in connecticut providing some clues as to why she drove here and rammed the gates. we returned to the scene where carey crashed her car yesterday. we are looking to see what police are doing yesterday and what they are doing today. that's at 8:15. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2

news. >> thank you. in a rare show of bipartisanship, all of congress praised the capitol police for their bravery during this incident. these officers are not getting paid right now, in an odd twist, due to the government shutdown. they are considered federal law enforcement officers and deemed essential personnel and will be paid eventually once the shutdown is over. however, one senator says it's a national disgrace that these officers are not getting paid for the heroic work they do. time now is 7:18. congress is expected to decide if the coming days if furloughed federal employees had are paid retroactively for the time they are off the job. a vote has not been scheduled yesterday but there is report that the house will take this up as early as today or tomorrow. even if the idea is approved, the workers will not get the money until the government is fully operating again. there is report that john

boehner has promised he will avoid a federal default. he says he intends to use a combination of both republican and democratic votes to raise the federal debt limit if necessary. he is trying reassure both sets of lawmakers as well as worried financial markets worried about another possible recession. highlights from earlier shows will be the only things that people will see at miramar u.s. naval station. miramar is where the fictional story for top gun took place. the air show had already been told it would not have the blue angels because of the sequestration. 7:19. furloughed federal workers are certainly no, sir the only ones feeling the impact of the government shutdown. businesses that depend on those workers to buy coffee, lunch, other items during the workdays are also hurting. restaurants around the san

francisco federal building say they are seeing a lot fewer customers. some worry they have to cut their workers' hours and that means less money for those workers to spend. nasa is turning 55 today, but not everyone is celebrating. the birthday comes as more than 1000 nasa workers are furloughed because of the shutdown. however, the employees received union-due refunds to help them survive during the shutdown. nasa will celebrate with a cake today declaring it the worst birthday ever time now is 7:20. later, the fate of a man accused of running naked through a b.a.r.t. station in san francisco. a judge will decide if he can get out of jail and get mental health treatment in alameda county. this incident happened back in may. may 10th at the 6 ames street station of the b.a.r.t. station. he was living on the couches of

his friends in berkeley so he was not eligible for services in san francisco. we go right to sal. big, big problem on 580 in oakland. it's an accident eastbound that's also affecting westbound traffic, too. there is a report of a man or a boy -- we are not sure, but a male, let's just say, running around on the freeway eastbound 580. and he was hit by a car but then that caused a chain reaction crash on 580 eastbound. for a while, all the lanes are blocked. looks like they are getting ready now to clear the accident. westbound and eastbound 580 are going to be affected as we look around here. you can see that eastbound 580 looks like the three right lanes are now open. only the fast lanes are closed. people are slowing down to see what is going on. don't use eastbound 580. use southbound 880.

taking a look at the bay bridge. this commute is about a 15 to 20 minute delay. >> slow traffic in concord and also in pittsburg as you head west. a bunch of minor crashes. we are looking at 80 westbound. that looks pretty good from hercules to richmond. b.a.r.t. and caltrain reporting on time. muni has some delays on the had he tre subway in bound. 7:22. >> a breezy start to the day for many and the winds providing a beautiful clear skies to the day. a life look from san francisco over the bay. the wind will begin to lighten up for the second half of your day. they are not going to go away all together but they are not as strong as we are seeing this morning. 50 miles per hour in concord, 22 in napa. 24 in fairfield. these are sustained winds so the gusts could be stronger than, that those little bursts that come according to some of

our airports, livermore as well as fairfield and in the hills where the winds are really howling this morning clocking at around 20 miles per hour right now in some areas over the oakland hills as well as the bay hills. earlier, about 54 mile-per-hour gusts. now about 40. so blowing quite strong. those winds are peaking and i expect by the second half of the morning and into the afternoon, they'll begin to peak. even though the winds will begin to lighten up, they're going to be very dry out there. we are already dry. temperatures for most, we are talking a pretty big warmup, anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees warmedder than where we were. seventies along the coast line to eighties. the winds driving our temperatures this morning as well, offsetting the cooling in the overnight hours. take a look. most of us are notably warmer. as you get outside, you notice

it is 7:26. and wind surfer is recovering this morning after being rescued from the water near tamales bay. deputies got a call around 8:00 last night a rescue helicopter

that happened to be on patrol in the area found the wind surfer who was clinging to his board and waving for help. he was rescued. he was not hurt, just shaking. a school district is apologizing after forcing a 16- year-old student to remove her national rifle association t- shirt. hailey bullwingle said she was forced to remove her shirt or be suspended. the shirt had the national rifle association with the silhouette of a buck. the school district says that staff will be undergoing sensitivity training so that something like that will not happen and bay area commuters will not tolerate another strike.

and part of the freeway that was shut down will be reopen temporarily. clearing a major injury accident east bound 580 as you head up towards the fruitvale exit. we'll tell you more about this straight ahead as you can tell, one lane is still closed.

dave. if you take a look behind me, you can see one of the bay doors open at this fire station. it is open even though it was shut erred for a while because of the budget cutbacks. firefighters are leaving now, they tell me. there was a field of fire as it was described as you can see that orange glow coming up from marshland in between the refinery and the highway. they went out to help but they had a handling on it so they didn't need to do much. let me show you about the red flag warning because that's causing some concern. that's what led to the opening of this fire station for 12 hours overnight. dry conditions, high winds, heat, all of that makes for a combination that could be very, very dangerous and that's causing firefighters to be concerned. >> we have already seen a lot

of erratic fire behavior this year. here we are now in october. typically, october, late october is when california experiences some of the worth fire debay other. >> reporter: concerns were high overnight and that led firefighters to come here to staff this station but it is shutting down once again. the firetruck that's now in that bay is now coming out right now. take a look. that is a truck from fire 80. they are leaving now, giving us a wave. that was just borrowed. firefighters came from all over the county. the trucks came from a different station. 12 hours is all they could afford. the fire station going to close back down. obviously, they'll re-evaluate the conditions. the red flag warning is

continuing. it's unclear if it will be open any longer. they normally work at 90 armories and eigh air bases. some of the national guard came back to help take care of the cargo planes and helicopters used to fight the big rim fire around yosemite. officials say they are rearranging staff and equipment to fill in those gaps >> we'll continue to monitor the red flag warnings and the fire dangers. you can go to our channel 2 website, ktvu.com to get the very latest in weather advisories and warnings across the bay area. >> it is 7:36. time is running out for the two sides in the b.a.r.t. dispute. the strike deadline is now over six and a half days away. contract talks are set to resume in downtown oakland at 9:30 this morning. today's negotiation it is between b.a.r.t. management and union follow the first major agreement in this bitter labor dispute.

yesterday, the two sides announced they have reached a deal on pension but they remain far apart on the other big issues of wage and benefits and there is still a possibility that b.a.r.t. workers could walk off the job when the cooling off period ends next thursday. meanwhile, a new poll shows the public is running out of patients with b.a.r.t.'s labor problems and they are angry over the threat of another strike that would cripple the bay area commute. 53% of those polled say that b.a.r.t. employees should accept b.a.r.t.'s current contract offer and avoid another strike. just 26% said that the two sides should continue to netogiate even if it means another strike. >> i think they have strong feelings about this and the fact that it has increased since the last time we talked. >> the bay area council released this poll after talking to more than 500 local commuters. later today, a prayer group will gather at three different

locations in san francisco. they will be remembering three homicide victims. the group will begin near san francisco state unfortunate to hold an outdoor prayer service for justin valdez. the 24-year-old student was shot to death after getting off a muni train last week. then the prayer group will go to third and harrison near at&t park to remember jonathan denver. the 25-year-old dodger fan was stabbed to death last week after going to a the game. then the group will also pray for a man who was killed in the city's western edition last week. this morning a federal judge is due to take up san jose's lawsuit against major league baseball. the city claims that major league baseball has imposed illegal road blocks in their attempt to bring the oakland a's to the south bay. major league baseball meantime will ask the judge to slow out the lawsuit. however, the shutdown of the federal government may slow everything down.

that's because the lawsuit is being heard in federal court it is 7:38. happening today, the excitement is building as the oakland a's are getting ready for the playoffs. pam cook is in studio with what you should know. >> the colyseum and the city of oakland getting ready for another run at the world series. final preparations are underway. this is new video this morning. you can see city hall all decked out in oakland a's green and gold. some big things there. all 48,000 tickets are sold out for both tonight and tomorrow's game. >> i'm looking forward to it. we had some raucous crowds this year and i can only imagine what the game will be like today and the game tomorrow. now that the bleachers will be filled, that's right going to be very tough for the tying

and the waters as you can see in pensacola, the waves are crashing down. these are just the first hints that we are seeing that tropical storm karen is coming. karen is in the southeast gulf of mexico afternoon forming it between cue cuba and the yucatan. karen is exptected to move rapidly through the gulf and could intensify through a hurricane, potentially category 1 late saturday morning. residents here are bracing. a hurricane watch in effect from grand isle, louisiana. louisiana has declared a state of emergency. florida has done the same for 18 of their counties. the storm poses a big challenge for fema. many workers, as you know, were furloughed due to a government shutdown and are being called back to work in anticipation of the storm and president obama has been briefed about the threat of this storm as well and he has instructed his team

to not a&m make sure that the resources but the staff are in place to potentially handling the big impact of this storm. back to you. >> thank you. joining us live from pensacola, florida. and stocks edging possibly higher indicating a rebound after a series of rebounds though the uncertainly impact of a government shutdown continues to worry investors. and there is ongoing concerns over how the death ceiling debate might be going. nasdaq up 22 and the s&p is up 7. and just checking rights now, tesla stock is up.73% after it lost 10% in the last two days. some shareholders sold off after burning video of a tesla burning off. there had been concerns that the battery exploded but tesla said that the battery module was hit by a large piece of

metal. tesla's stocks up still 375% since the start of this year. samsung expects to post another record level earning. that would put earnings at $9.4 billion despite a slowdown in its smart phone business. sames skunk -- samsung has reported record earnings in five of the last quarters. and twitter is going public. the san francisco-based company revealed it has never made a profit and has lost $419 million since it started in 2007. but it adds that revenue is growing. the timing means that twitter will probably announce a share price by thanksgiving and twitter will also use the stock symbol twtr. >> time it now 7:46. a memorial service will be held for a san francisco high school student killed a week ago in a

violent crash. police say 16-year-old kevin sun was riding in a minivan when a mercedes being about 80 miles per hour slammed into it. the 1-8d-year-old suspect, jenny zhu has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and gross negligence. kevin sun was part of the rotc high school guard. more than 100 people were at this memorial yesterday evening for a mother killed after being run over by a truck in a san francisco park. the husband of christie spoke for the first time about the death of his wife. she was sun bathing last month with a baby daughter when a city employee, thomas runowsky allegedly ran over her while driving through the park.

prosecutors are still investigating but no charges have been filed. hundreds of theater lovers came to celebrate the grand opening of the theater at the san mateo high school. it is now a state-of-the-art area. officials say this rivals professional theaters. the $28 million theater was paid for through bond money. and this week, construction crews began installing the first seats at the new home of the 49ers in santa clara. they have discovered there is actually more room for fans than first thought at levi stadium. the new stadium will be able to hold near 70,000 fans. that's from a long planned estimate of 68,000. they were able to find space around the stadium, just squeezing in the extra seat. the stadium is scheduled to open in time for next season. that's like an airplane. squeeze a couple more. >> squeeze them on in there.

friday. what a beautiful start. a look over the golden gate bridge. winds coming from the north and northeast. not too much trouble crossing this bridge. if you are crossing a bridge that spans from east to west, you may have more trouble. seeing the strongest winds over parts of the north bay. santa rosa and napa reporting 20 to 22 miles per hour. those are sustained winds. gusts stronger than that. fair field, 24 hours. i'm noticing quite a breeze along i-80. if you have to commute along i- 80, you may find yourself holding tight to the wheel at times. concord, notice the arrows on the wind coming from the norman mineta because it's coming from the new york city if you are crossing over these bridges here, perhaps richmond and san rafael, could be a little breezy at times because the wind is going in this direction. you may not have much trouble the farther south you go because i'm seeing light winds in and around san jose. mountain view reporting light winds.

it looks like the winds right now focused over parts of the north bay for parts of solano county. we are waking up a lot warmer than we were yesterday morning. 61 in walnut creek, 24 in novato. not allowing that cool air to settle this among. some areas anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees warmer than where we started. you may notice as you step outside and for the afternoon, those down sloping winds will drive temperatures up anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees for the afternoon. 83 from petaluma. 78 sausalito, 81 for oakland, low to mid-80s for the independent land east bay. wind will be lightening up. we'll remain breezy for the afternoon but not as windy as we are this afternoon. winds are peaking light about now and we should begin to see them die down as we get into the second half of the morning. 80 degrees redwood city, 78 san francisco, mostly sunny skies, 70s along the coast. a beautiful day to head out to

this morning. the winds woke me up early tonight. they were howling. they continue this morning. the winds will begin to east up a little bit later but the red flag warning will go into saturday morning because the air is very dry at this point. that's not going to change. giving you a look right now at some those gusts, 48 miles per hour reported in fairfield. 28 in napa. the winds have increased over parts of the north bay. over part of the south bay, san jose is calm. mountain view, 5 miles per hour. i'm noticing along the peninsula, winds are fairly light compared to what we have on the east side where we have winds about 17 miles per hour. and in the hills, we are talking about to 36 to 40 miles per hour. about 2300 feet, gusting to about 50 miles per hour earlier this morning. last i checked, about 40. again, the winds are peaking this morning. they'll begin to die down a little bit later. the winds are driving down our

night toppled some trees off skyline boulevard. the winds ever blocking the roadway and the city crews just arrived to get the limbs out of the way here. they had not had time to get into this because they were busy row moving the tree limbs off the road. crews will be here for several hours trying to check the tree away. it's been a busy morning for city crews. the red flag warnings in effect hills. fire crews were busy. gusts up to 50 miles per hour in oakland hills which snapped wires off old redwood road. parts of alameda, santa cruz and santa clara counties above 1000 feet are also part of this red flag zone. fire officials say they want

people to call 911 immediately if you see smoke today because if something sparks, it could go quickly as you can see right now with the livermore valley fire starting at 7:30 this morning and spreading to 50 to 60 acres. this wind gust brewing from the east. that is the reversal of the normal wind pattern. we are seeing wind damage that we have not seen before. red flag warning in effect until 6:00 tomorrow morning. live from oakland hills, tara moriarty. >> thank you, tara. people are okay even though a tree crashed on to their truck while they were inside. it happened near oak knoll avenue west and helena highway. the tree crashed on to the truck, with the limbs going through the windshield narrowly missing the drive and the

passenger. they only needed treatment at the scene. napa and oakland were not the only areas with wind damage. we also received this photo from danville of another tree snapping at the base. if you have photos, you can post them on facebook, send them to us on twitter. the wind fueled napa county's 375-acre grass fire. it started near lake berryessa. some of the roads in the area will be closed until the fire is fully contained. on twitter, some people as far away as san francisco tweeted they could smell the smoke from that fire. new this morning, san jose firefighters say an early morning attic fire probably burned for an hour before the family of six inside escaped.

ktvu's katy utehs talked to the family. >> the family smelled smoke but first, they didn't think it was their house. they went outside to check and when they saw the smoke billowing from their attic, they knew it was their home. >> i just scared for the kids. i come out, go back out. i go back out. i cannot breathe. >> reporter: videos of the flames come to us from a neighbor who helped the family as they escaped. the woman's husband ran back inside, grabbed a cell phone and called 911. this happened around 2:30. as the family of six escaped, winds were whipping through the attic vent and firefighters say that fueled the flames causing them to burst out of the roof. joe ha, the homeowner, says it seemed like an eternity as he watched his house burn. >> i say hurry up, hurry up. we see the flames show up like

that. neighborhood up. >> reporter: fire crews say they responded within five minutes but the gusty winds overnight made the fire dangerous to battle. they were however, able to save some of the valuables on the first floor of the home. as we join the huh family to walk through the house, we can see the water damage from smoke and water and then the fire damage through the attic. investigators say that the fire appears to be accidental. they tell me that they have turned the home over to the insurance agents. the huh family has relatives in the san francisco-san jose area so they say they will be staying with family until their home can be repaired. live in san jose, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, katie. the chp is investigating a deadly accident northwest lawrence expressway in sunny vale.

a man on a motorcycle hit some debris on the freeway, crashed and was then run over by a car. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver who hit the motorcyclist is cooperating with authorities. berkeley police say they are dealing with a growing number of copper theft. investigators believe that this week's explosion and power blackout on the cal campus is tied to the theft of copper wire from an off campus power sub station. berkeley police say they are now dealing with copper theft on a regular basis both on the cal campus and across the city. the thieves commonly cash in the metals at recycling centers. state lawmakers are searching for ways to protect california's ports and airports as sea levels keep rising. the experts say that both sfo and oakland international airport could be affected in the coming years. the sea wall at sfo was designed to guard against big waves but not an overall increase in sea levels. a strategy meeting is set for

later this month in long beach. the san francisco man charged with running a billion dollars online drug market known as silk road is due in federal court at 9:00 this morning. 29-year-old boss william albright is accused of create what -- creating what some call the amazon.com of illegal drugs. they say that he tried to arrange the murder of a man who threatened to expose the financial information of silk road users. and adobe is sending a warning to about 3 million customers after hackers may have gained access to their personal information. users names, passwords and other financial information were compromised.

unbelievable chaos yesterday near the white house and the u.s. capitol building. now, in yesterday's ktvu channel 2 news at noon, we will told but the female driver shot and killed after leading police on this wild chase through washington, d.c. there was a one-year-old girl in the back seat but she was not hurt. today, investigators will continue to search for a motive and we have new information this morning about the female driver. ktvu's kyla campbell his our washington, d.c. bureau to tell us about this expanding police investigation. kyla? >> reporter: i heard from my contact at the u.s. capitol police this morning. she says that investigators are process three different scenes

right now. one of them is where 34-year- old miriam carey crashed her car. can you see where damage was done to the guard house. others saw police detectives with metal detectors reportedly looking for bullet casings. she was shot and killed by police. her one-year-old daughter was rescued from the car and was not hurt. >> it's shocking how this whole thing occurs. no one knows the exact circumstance of how this occurs. >> but cnn reports that carey told her pipe friend that president barack obama had her home in connecticut under electronic surveillance providing a possible motive for crashing into the white house gate. family and friends say that carey was suffering from depression after other menal issues. >> all right, kyla? in a rare show of

bipartisanship, all of congress praised capitol police for their bravery. but in a strange twist, they are not getting paid because of the government shutdown. they are called federal law enforcement officers and are deemedey tension personnel and that the not being paid until the shutdown is over. these officers are getting paid for their heroic work that they do. house speaker john boehner has just wrapped up a session along with some other congressional republicans. as we zoom in on the cnn reporter right now. they were holding a news conference on capitol hill to discuss the government shutdown. boehner, the speaker of the house, has been criticizing president barack obama for refusing to negotiate with the gop. there are reports out of washington in which boehner promised he will avoid a federal default that could come as early as object by 17th.

he has privately told republican lawmakers he intends to use a combination of republican and democrat lawmakers to raise the debt ceiling if necessary. boehner is trying reassure post lawmakers as well as nervous financial markets who have been fearing another recession if that debt limit is not raised. congress is expected to decide in the coming days if furloughed federal worker also be paid retroactively for the time they are off the job. the vote has not yet been scheduled but there are reports that the house could take up this issue as early as today or even tomorrow. even if the idea is approved, the workers would not receive any money in the government is fully operating again. and facilities in the u.s. are not the only ones affected by the government shutdown. two dozen cemeteries and memorials overseas have also closed including the world war

ii memorial in normandy, france. the prosecution of immigrants and drug smuggling offenses will resume. i am grant smuggling case also only be prosecuted if they involve death or serious injuries, the government announced concerns are growing that the political gridlock in washington, d.c. will hurt the hungry. the government shutdown could lead to a cut in federal funding for food banks here in the bay area and elsewhere. demand always goes up as we get closer to the holiday season however, there are hopes that a shortage can still be averted. most of the money for food banks comes from private donations. nasa turned 55 years old today. not everyone is celebrating. the birthday comes as more than 1000 nasa ames researchers are

welcome back. a funeral is being planned for a grandfather who was killed last month in oakland after his car was hit by a suspect fleeing the scene of a shooting. 75-year-old robert wallo was driving home the night of september 23rd when his car was hit on bancroft avenue and church street. two 17-year-old boys were arrested in connection with that crash. he was a grandfather of 10. he was also a care giver for the developmentally disabled, also a church pastor in oakland. he emigrated to the united states in 2007, escaping the violence of civil war in his native liberia. his funeral will be held october 19th at the chapel of the chimes in hayward.

it us 8:25. a southern california school district is apologizing after forcing a 16-year-old student to remove her national rifle association shirt last month. hailey bullwinkle a sophomore at canyon high says she was forced to remove her shirt or face suspension. the shirt featured a buck, a rifle and national rife association they were treating me as if i was a criminal. >> i see a double standard >> the principal says that campus staff will be trained so that incident does not happen again. it's 8:26. amazon may be expanding its line of electronics behind the kindle. reportedly, amazon will start offering a set top box that could be ready before the holiday season. it would serve as a way for amazon to boost delivery of its prime video service.

through tomorrow. wind about 30 miles per hour, 15 in con court, 17 in napa and the arrow showing you it's coming from the northeast. very dry out there this morning. we take a look at livermore, 6 miles per hour but i'm seeing gusts up to 20 miles per hour, keeping in hand that's the area where the buyer is burning. now, because of the wind, sort of stirring the air around, we really never cooled off this morning. temperatures have been olding in the 60s for most of us but now beginning to rebound as well. 68 in santa rosa. 66 half moon bay. we have not seen any wind this morning far south, morgan hill, gilroy, santa cruz. here is a peek at what you can expect for the afternoon. mostly sunny skies, widespread lows to mid-70s along the coast

in the livermore valley. newschannel 2 is there. you can see. look at the smoke. look at the area that's burned. this fire has grown to more than 50 acres. one of the dispatchers told us that the fire is burning in a remote area. right now, no homes are threatened but we wanded to show you these live pictures of what's happening. make sure you stay right here on mornings on 2 to get the latest updates. in the meantime, a red flag warning covers parts of the bay area. and strong winds are parts of the reason for that claudine wong is live in pittsburg where the strong fire danger forced one fire station to open back up overnight. >> reporter: yes, we got here this morning. there were four firefighters in fair station 27 here. but fire station 27 closed once again. it opened back up temporarily.

just for 12 hours overnight because of the red flag warning. in the last hour, shut down again. here is a look at the firefighters walking down that station. overnight, the firefighters came from across the county. we can show you where they headed. this is video of the refinery overnight. a grass and brush fire that started around 12:45 this morning. i just spoke to a spokesperson at the refinery who told me that the fire took a couple of hours to put out and then it smoldered for a while. keep in mind that refinery sits on 2200 acres and this fire was on the far northeast side away from any operational equipment. so there was no impact and no word on a cause the red flag warnings do remain in effect. there is concerned that the dry

grass be a the heat and the wind could make for a dangerous combination. >> we are here in october where california experienced some of the worst fire behavior. so people are advised to be extra caution as this red flag warning remains in effect. when it comes to station 87, they do not have the staffing to keep it open. it is not about the need or desire to have this station here but just about the money, staff and resources to do it. live here in pittsburg, claudine wong. california's firefighting ability now being hampered by the shutdown. some national guard members briefly came back home helping to take care of the cargo planes and helicopters used to fight the big rim fire around yosemite. officials say they are rearranging staff and equipment

to fill in those gaps >> tomorrow morning at 9:00, the kentfield fire district and marin county sheriff's office will conduct an emergency evacuation drill to get residents prepared for a wildfire. the drill is held every year in the kent woodlands neighborhood. about 200 homes will take part. firefighters say these homes are especially vulnerable to fire danger. we'll turn to monitor the red flag warning and the fire danger by going to our website. get the latest advisories and warnings around the bay area. >> it is 8:36. time is running out for the two sides in the b.a.r.t. dispute. the strike deadline now just over 6 and a half days away. contract talks are set to resume in downtown oakland in about an hour. today's negotiations between b.a.r.t. management and the union follow

field. no homes threatened right now. this is really what firefighters were being very careful about, because this red flag warning for parts of the east bay and north bay hills with wind gusts apparently up to about 30 miles per hour in this area. can you see the smoke being blown. a lot of dry brush there since we are at the very end of the dry season. you can see just a clear line where the fire burned. obviously, quite a bit of firetrucks out there, firefighters on the scene doing what they can to make sure that this does not get out of control. but, again, this is exactly what crews are bracing for any spark could break out a fire. stay with ktvu.com for updates. time is 8:45.

let's bring you up to date on some of the other stories we are following right now. the east bay hills under a red flag warning. high winds, low humidity, dry conditions fueling those fire concerns. 50 mile-per-hour wind gusts knocked out some trees and power lines, forcing firefight torres put out some spot fires. strong overnight winds in napa county fueled a 270 fire grass fire. this one started about 8:30 last night near lake berryessa. this morning, it is 75% contained. no evacuations so far but some of the roads in the area will be closed until the fire is fully contained. ?rrchltd we are getting more information now about that woman yesterday accused of leading police on a chase through washington, d.c. around the white house and the u.s. capitol. investigators say 34-year-old miriam carey, a dental hygienist from connecticut,

suffered from depression. she slammed her car with a small child inside into a security post. capitol police later shot and killed her. her boy friend said she had accused president barack obama of putting her home under electronic surveillance. a tropical storm is taking aim at the gulf coast right now. tropical storm karen could bring a lot of rain and wind this weekend. clouds are building and waves are crashing into beach cities across the south. officials are preparing for tropical storm karen which could hit near hurricane strength over the weekend. florida officials are concerned that the government shutdown could pose some issues when it comes to communication between state and federal officials. >> you can see the impact of this storm as we move into recover recovery faze. there could be some i am fact. tropical storm karen could become the first named tropical storm to wreak havoc on the

warmer than where we were yesterday afternoon. these winds are helping to keep our overnight lows actually quite mild. stepping outside this morning, we are anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees warmer than we were yesterday. you're going to notice that as well. mountain view reporting just a light offshore breeze san jose reporting 9 miles per hour. live more, 6 miles per hour. as tori mentioned, some of the peaks gusting to about 30 miles per hour. we are keeping an eye closely on this area because of the fires burning in that area. temperatures, 64 in walnut creek, mid-60s in oakland. mid-60s in san francisco. most of us started in the 60s. this is where we are held all morning long and temperatures are beginning to rebound as well. by the second half of the day, we have a nice warmup in store. 80 degrees for vallejo. 78 san francisco. low to mid-80s for parts of the north bay. 83 san jose. 85 in morgan hill. the winds are peaking this morning. they will begoin die down as we
