whipping winds spark fires and send smoke across the bay area. it's what firefighters had feared and tonight they're working to prevent more damage. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. the largest of today's fires burned more than 1,000 acres in solano county tearing through dry brush and ranch land. the fire started off of highway 12 near sassoon city and prompted a smoke advisory after a large plume of smoke hit san francisco and oakland. we have team coverage tonight. mark tamayo tracking the conditions and the red flag warning that's still in effect

this evening. we begin with ktvu's jana katsuyama in solano county where fire crews are still keeping a close eye on hot spots there. jana. >> reporter: frank tonight fire officials tell us that no one has been injured but the damage there's a lot of it. this is a man's truck that had a camper on the back and this is all that's left of it. down the road off in the distance you can see where the fire is still burning tonight. >> it's a scary dramatic thing. >> reporter: joe says he saw the smoke then opened his gate to let firefighters by. >> it was going maybe 20 miles per hour. so i just roared out, got in the middle of flames and they were like 20 feet in the air. >> reporter: the grass fire quickly burst into a blaze.

contra costa, napa and yolo county tried to contain the flames that moved as fast as the flames. >> we had 40-mile-per-hour tkpwáupses throughout -- 40- mile-per-hour gusts throughout the day. and that's definitely affecting our response. >> reporter: three firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation. >> i comes around here all the time i never seen this much smoke. it was very smoky. >> yes. >> reporter: by evening the fire had burned through more than 1,000 acres. the large sack of hey meant to feed the cows burned. this man says he is just glad the damage wasn't worse in an area that has a long burn

history. >> there's duck hunting out here. been out here since the turn of the century. turn of last century. >> reporter: the dixon fire chief tells me the fire is 30% contained. there's more than $500,000 in damage and they plan to be out here through the night. live in solano county, near sasun city, jana katsuyama, ktvu news. other fires kept firefighters busy throughout the bay area. a vegetation fire broke out just before 1:00 this afternoon east of rohnert park. fire crews attacked it from both the air and the ground and that fire is now out. firefighters also scrambled to put out another fire in benecia for a time it threatened several buildings but no one was evacuated the fire started just before 3:00 this afternoon and the flames at one point forced authorities to close the east fifth street ramp on interstate 780. firefighters tell us the fire is now out but they will be

checking on it throughout the evening. last night and into early morning the peak gusts throughout the area. 59miles per hour, northern sonoma county 52 miles per hour. fairfield and parts of contra costa county as well 59 miles per hour. winds as i mentioned backing off quite a bit. you can see fairfield right now a sustained wind at 15 miles per hour. lots of calm reports, so good news for oakland and also parts of the other parts of the region as well for mountain view and san jose. livermore winds around 55 miles per hour. we still have a bit of a breeze out there. winds could be approaching 20 miles per hour still very dry as well. 10 to 20%. coming up in 15 minutes we'll take a look at this.

cooler mornings and beach weather we'll also highlight the warmest day of the weekend. fire crews have the upper hand now on a wildfire that is burning in napa county near lake barriesta. that fire started east of the lake. 376acres have burned. as of tonight, calfire says the fire is fully contained. and at this point there's no word on what caused it the oakland coliseum was rocking tonight for game one of the american league division series between the oakland a's and detroit tigers. a late push for late rally for fans and rekindle the excitement of a play off run just one year ago. we have live team coverage beginning with deborah villalon, she's at the oakland coliseum on why fans are undeterred by tonight's slow start. deborah. >> reporter: fans are streaming out just in the last 30 seconds. of course they are disappointed

explosion. the engineer said the welds may be problematic and could date back to 1929. pg & e tells us quote first and formost we want our customers to know that line 147 is safe. if the line wasn't safe we wouldn't keep it in service. the highway patrol says a pedestrian hit by at least one car this morning on a busy freeway on the east bay was a 12-year-old boy who is autistic. it happened around 6:30 this morning in oakland on eastbound interstate 580 near fruitvale and it triggered a multi car collision. several drivers called 911 a few minutes earlier reporting that someone was running in lanes of traffic. investigators said the child had been reported missing that morning. the chp says he's now in an induced coma and is in critical

condition. now to our coverage of government shutdown. this is a look at the white house. the government shutdown has now entered its fifth day. this afternoon the president and vice president took a stroll to pick up lunch at a sandwich shop near the white house. the president rejected an anonymous quote from a staff member in the wall street journal that his administration is winning the political battle. >> as long as they're off the job nobody is winning and that's the point. we should get this overwith as soon as possible. >> this isn't some damn game. the american people don't want our government shutdown and neither do i. >> reporter: speaker boehner was angry about the reported winning comment. boehner plans to keep the house in session this weekend for a vote to make sure furloughed government workers get retroactive pay. details are emerging about meriam carey she's the 34-year- old connecticut woman shot and

killed by police after a wild chase through washington, d.c. police say they tried to stop her three times before she was killed. all the while her 1-year-old daughter was inside that car. she may have had mental health issues and believed president obama was stalking her. her family said she had had suffered from postpartum depression. on the national mall in washington, d.c. this afternoon, a man doused himself with gasoline then set himself on fire. witnesses say people passing by ripped off their shirts to help put out the flames. the man was air lifted to a hospital with what are described as critical life threatening injuries. now according to a witness, the man quote saluted the capital and then lit himself on fire. and at this point, police are still trying to figure out why he did it. the san francisco man charged with running a massive illegal drug website is denying the charges against him. this is a sketch from inside

the courtroom. his detention hearing was delayed until next week. once in new york he will face drug trafficking, computer hacking and money laundering charges. prosecutors say that elbrick ran a website that allowed people to anonymously buy and sell drugs. a tragic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> i am losing my son because of somebody's stupidity. >> the innocent victim's mother talks exclusively to news 2. and what is so unusual about what police are calling a random act of violence. >> form a union, lose your job. that's what some local brewery workers say is happening to them right now. look at them with that u-verse wireless receiver.

new at 10:00, workers at the pyramid brewery picked up their final checks today but they're not giving up the fight to keep their jobs. they say the lay offs are an act of retaliation. amber lee is at the plant. >> reporter: workers here at the plant tell me they received what may have been their last paycheck today after being told don't come back unless we call you. >> it's unfair. we just want to work. we're a hard working crew. >> reporter: for the 15 employees here at pyramid brewery here in brooklyn,

brewing, bottling and shipping beer along with maintaining the facility is their livelihood. >> we're always a small group that did everything in the brewery. it's heartbreaking to just be kind of pushed out of the facility. >> reporter: the employees tell me their work is rewarding but that moral had declined after a change in management. >> i've never had a full 30 minute lunch break i think in a year and a half. >> reporter: how long have you gone without a raise? >> you can say four or five years. >> reporter: workers unioned in august. weeks later the owners shutdown the plant sending them home. they believe the shutdown is retaliation for unionizing. i contacted union brewery. they said in a statement that the brewery produced in berkeley had a sour taste that wasn't normal. and said owe we have identified a problem with the brewery and

we have taken the brewery offline and that they've shifted production to another plant. >> i want to make a really good beer in berkeley. >> i love this place. i don't want them to close this place. >> reporter: marco and francisco have worked at pyramid 12 years. both say they don't want the severance package. all say they want to return to this plant even if it takes months. >> we're a family, we're still a family. >> reporter: workers say each month this plant produces more than 3 million bottles of beer and 20,000 kegs. workers hope their union will meet with company officials next week to work out a deal for them to keep their jobs. live in berkeley, amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. now to the b.a.r.t. negotiations. there are just over six days left until the 60 day cooling off period ends and we could be

facing another b.a.r.t. strike. b.a.r.t. and its union spent another day at the negotiating table but there's still no deal. last month b.a.r.t. said it was $112 million apart from the union proposal. last week, a union concession lowered that number to $100 million. and this week, a new proposal shrunk the gap to 80 million. but even though they are getting closer there's also a question about the length of the contract. the unions want three years, b.a.r.t. is insisting on four. >> we don't want to do a three year contract. that would put the renewal contract within the cycle of our contractors. also means we increased the frequency to which the union has to go through all this drama. >> the unions have made movement on waste proposals. we've made several in the last few days.

>> the two sides also need to approve on pensions and health coverage. we're hearing from the heart broking mother of a teenager who just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. only on 2. she spoke to alex sadvige, about her son and how close he was to making it home when he got caught in the middle of a turf war. >> my sweetheart, handsome young man. >> reporter: he almost made it home. 18-year-old brandon chandler was just feet from his door. >> we heard the gunshots it was about 15 round. >> reporter: the teenager killed on sunday was not the intended target. his mother tells us he was outgoing and caring. >> there's no reason for this. he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. >> reporter: police believe chandler was shot by gang members but they don't believe he was in a gang. >> should the community be

upset? yes. >> reporter: police believe chandler was in the middle of a turf war. a gang shooting that's led to 14 shootings since june. controlling this wave of violence is a tall order for a department that has been hit by cuts. the the president's gang unit is gone -- the department's gang unit is gone. >> it's a perfect storm for us to be able to have the intelligence and resources to enforce on a daily basis. >> reporter: vallejo police plan to shuffle around officers to stop the gang rivalry that's now left this teenager dead. >> whoever they are i hope they get caught because this is not right. i am losing my son because of

happening now, tropical storm karen barreling down on the gulf coast it's expected to make land fall on early sunday. karen is losing punch and will not lose hurricane strength but it will still bring two to 3- inches of rain. this has been a quiet hurricane season so far. karen is only the second named storm to hit the u.s. this year. the government shutdown has led to furloughs at the national weather service. workers there are considered nonessential. but the furloughs are worrying one meteorologist. >> i'm concerned about the american public and people who are vulnerable to storm sáurpblg. residents in the gulf coast are getting ready for karen's arrival. the white house says the federal emergency management agency fema has recalled furloughed workers to help with the storm and its aftermath. wall street ended the week

with gains, the dow was up 76 points, the nasdaq was up 33. analysts say investors are some what optimistic that washington will finally resolve the budget dispute fairly soon. california republican party leaders are in anaheim this weekend holding their fall convention in the shadow of a government shut -- shutdown. chairman jim bruelty says the future is very much in play. >> for anyone to suggest that they know what's going to happen in november of 2014 2014 based on what's happening in october of 2013 is either a profit or a fool. >> texas governor and possible presidential candidate rick perry is expected to be the key speaker tomorrow night. state senator mark leno of

looking for two attackers tonight they say preys on someone who was having car trouble. the assault took place on alma street. she has the one clue that could help find the attacker. maureen naylor has the story. >> reporter: the man who was having trouble pulled into this street. kwraouft avenue is all lit up and like most weekend nights, packed with people -- university avenue is all lit up. >> i would say it's pretty busy -rp. >> reporter: a 37-year-old san jose man driving southbound on alma. pulled over on melville avenue under a street light after her car's warning light went on. >> surprised that it happened in this neighborhood. it's known as a very quiet neighborhood. >> almost immediately a dark colored sedan pulled up and parked near by. >> reporter: officer brad young

says that's when two latino men got out of their car speaking english to the victim who's also latino but does not understand english. >> he did not know what they were saying. as they approached him the primary suspect, produced a nice. assaulted the victim and cut him four times. the suspect then drove off in their car and what makes the incident so strange say police is there's no apparent motive. >> they didn't attempt to rob him, they didn't attempt to take his car. and there's no evidence to suggest that it's gang related. >> reporter: they're hoping someone will recognize the primary suspect depicted in this sketch who pulled the 3- inch blade. police are calling it a random act of violence but isolated incident. >> i'm a student who comes here pretty often that's pretty frightening to hear that because it could happen to anyone. >> reporter: the primary suspect described to be 5'6" tall, 150 pounds with short

black hair and a short dark beard. reporting live tonight in palo alto. maureen nee hror, ktvu news -- maureen naylor, ktvu news. the fire department tweeted these pictures. the two alarm fire started just before 7:00 tonight on maberry road near king road. it took firefighters two hours to get those flames under control. a heat lamp may have started the fire. no one was hurt. in campbell police have arrested a 16-year-old suspect in what is believed to be a gang related stabbing. prosecutors say miguel capetillo is being charged as an adult in the stabbing of a man behind a subway grocery store back in february. police say two weeks ago -- >> when i went to serve the arrest warrant on him -- when we went to serve the arrest warrant on him, we determined that he was hiding in the crawl

space of the house and we were able to arrest him from there. >> they tracked him to his parents house in modesto. another suspect rodolfo vasquez of san jose was arrested just days after the stabbing. the victims injuries were serious but he is expected to survive. both -- both vasquez and capetillo face assault charges with enhancements of gang activity. a car struck a bicyclist who was in the median part of the intersection. he is from los gatos and about 30 years old. friends and family said goodbye today to san francisco teenager kevin sanh who was killed in a car crash. also today the lawyer representing the woman who police say is responsible for the teen's death is offering an explanation for what could have

caused it. ktvu's david stevenson spoke to sanh's father and friends. >> a steady stream of mournings, young and old shed tears as they came to view kevin sanh. on display snapshots of happier times. >> i thought him how to play the drums. >> reporter: the teen was killed when the teenager was rear ended. jenny zu was driving a mercedes suv at speeds as high as 80 miles per hour before the crash. she is out on bail. prosecutors so far have not filed charges. her attorney says, he wondered if her client had a small stroke. he said she's holding up but mention the young man and she

just falls apart. >> he was always so cheerful, so, so playful. i mean he, he made everybody laugh. >> reporter: for kevin's father, it is a tragedy with no end in sight. his wife a sausalito postal worker remains in critical condition. >> after the accident she is in a coma now. she hasn't awoke yesterday. >> reporter: kevin's father thanks firefighters an the community for helping raise money for his funeral. in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu news. the chief checktive of palo alto based tesla motor, defended the motor. after video of a tesla s on fire went viral. the model s that caught fire

ran over a metal object. that tore a hole in the armored plate that protects the car's battery. the car's alert system immediately warned the driver to exit the vehicle. no one was hurt but tesla shares have bounced back a bit picking up 4% after falling 6% yesterday. some anxious investors boosted the stock of a bankrupt electronics company after confusing it with twitter. yesterday san francisco based twitter made public its ipo offering and said its ticker would be twtr. some investors snatched up shares of a company named tweeter. tweeter shares jumped from 1 cent to 15-cents as a result. i detail the red flag warning and what to expect tomorrow morning. and tomorrow morning we look ahead to a cooling trend and even a chance to shower.

it was his final wish and he says even though he's dying, he can now finally get a good night's sleep. mike mibach spoke about to the man. >> i can't even imagine what my dad is going through losing his only son. >> reporter: december 2011, west oakland police say charles butler jr. bumped a car while parking. an argument ensuing minutes later an argument ensued. >> the bump was the catalyst. >> reporter: charges have been placed on cartier. >> for two years it was nonstop.

>> reporter: tran says a break in the case came after someone saw a story ktvu aired last month about butler's father's last wish to see an arrest before he passes away. >> one of the members came forward and gave us the key piece we needed to close this case. >> reporter: his memory never forgotten tonight with this break in the case a message from his family to the man now in custody. >> we don't wish any harm on anyone. however when someone has done what they did, they deserve to get the maximum punish. >> i just feel that and hope that they feel the heartfelt pain that me and my family have felt since my son has been killed. you know murdered by them. >> reporter: charles butler will still peer out the window. >> now i'll probably be able to get myself a few nights of rest. >> reporter: and he'll do so with a heavy heart looking out for signs his son is looking

down on him. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. officials at salina state valley prison in soledad says an inmate found killed was killed bid his cell mate. officials say he killed a 31- year-old inmate. the victims name has not yet been released but officials say he was sent to the prison from santa clara county back in 2011. he was serving a seven year sentence for carjacking. there's another twist in the case of two dogs killed by a motist. the dogs were shot and killed by home owner randy crist after they got into a chicken coop on his property and started killing his chickens. now initially crist son john said it was he who killed the dogs with a shovel.

singer jesse d was one of the first to perform and kick off the hardly strictly bluegrass music festival in san francisco today. some of the big names performing this year include

bonny ray and emma lou harris. the festival is free and runs through sunday. you can check out the weekend line up on ktvu.com. look under today's hot topic. the government shutdown almost ruinedded an annual outing for a sixth grade class from the east bay. paul chambers tells us how teachers quickly changed lesson plans right in the middle of a trip to a national park. >> reporter: parents waved and had smiles to welcome a sixth grade class. >> we're home, yeah. >> reporter: back from a trip that almost ended as soon as it started. the teachers heard the government shut down was a possibility. putting the trip in jeopardy. >> i was thinking, what's going to happen. >> when we got the first word from the ranger it crossed our mind for 10 second. maybe we should cancel the trip and head home. >> reporter: but they didn't.

they headed north 50 miles and continued a lesson with a government twist. >> they were shutting down the national parks why could they do that. we got to move and learn about a different place. >> we ended up moving to medicine lake and we went to a state park, it was a lot of fun. >> teachers got resourceful and we knew the area and moved up to bernie hall. exchanged cabins for the tents on the ground and changed our lesson plan. >> reporter: not only did the shut down change their lesson plan it also changed the way they may take the trip in the future. teach eus say they may add the state parks to their itinerary in future triples. the federal shutdown has furloughed an unknown number of

pushed into the region. hasn't backed over the last few hours. as far as temperatures from the afternoon. they rangeded from the 70s in pacifica and livermore 81 degrees. fire danger will be a big concern in southern california all weekend long. in fact, ramping up for tomorrow. that red flag fire warning in place. high pressure off sheer, low pressure to our east. the pressure difference responsible for the wind for today. thankfully that low is scooting out to the east and the winds have been relaxing here in the bay area. but tomorrow it is still going to be warm out there. lots of sunshine, decreasing wind. but that dry air mass remaining possibly into sunday. and the a's and detroit with mostly clear skies out there. we had the warm conditions this evening and basically the same forecast for tomorrow. temperatures in the 70s at right around 74 degrees during the 6:00 hour for your

saturday. everyone about the same as today. could be a little warm in some spots. stinson beach at 8:00. right around the rim of the bay we're showing you 80s here. livermore 83. san jose 84. san francisco spent most of the day in the 70s. briefly topping out around 80 by 3:00 or 4:00 by tomorrow afternoon. your five day forecast, sunday basically the same deal. might be a little bit cooler coast side. and then the real cooling moves in for monday, tuesday and wednesday. there's the rain cloud to reflect at least a chance of a shower late tuesday and into wednesday. with that system moving in. we could be talking about snow in the sierra by that time frame. just some big changes really warm weekend. much cooler later in the period. >> watch out. we'll have to watch and see. let's go back to the a's play off. largest crowd since 2004. more than 48,000 people on hand unfortunately didn't quite go as planned. >> take the tarp off and tip the cap to the tigers. it'll pop off the page.
