units. >> reporter: fire chief paul smith says with the warning expiring this morning, the timing for the drill couldn't have been better. >> we've been on heightened awareness and i think the drill this morning brought out the best, because they realized how important it is to be prepared for something like this. >> reporter: firefighters say even though the warning has been lifted, it doesn't mean we're out of the woods yet. hot, dry weather means conditions are still dangerous. >> today is the first day those winds will subside a little bit. however, the winds the last four or five days has been drying the vegetation out. doesn't mean the danger is over. until we get our fog back into the bay area, we are still at increased danger. >> reporter: oakland hills and around the bay, people took advantage of the nice weather. for many, that meant cookouts. with the danger high, they're caution when it comes to cooking. >> i'm mostly making sure i'm

by my grill. i keep that pan under it. what i'm going to do now since i'm done cooking, i'm going to let my ashes burn down and throw ice on there, water, scoop it out. >> reporter: fire officials are urging anyone who sees smoke to call it in, so any fire that starts won't burn out of control. you may have noticed it was warm out there. let's check in with mark. warm in the city today. >> san francisco fog-free. lower 80s. san francisco topped out 83 degrees this afternoon. the strong offshore winds have backed off, but still very warm, especially this time of year, when you get a weather pattern like this, fire danger, though we don't have the red flag warning still a concern. temperatures from the 80s, 80 to 87 degrees. red flag warning now in place towards southern california. here in the bay area, mostly clear skies and another warm day tomorrow. here's a look at the current

numbers. it's 71 degrees now in san francisco. san jose 76. another warm forecast for your sunday. i'm tracking shower chances on the five-day. more on that coming up. red flag alert remains in effect for much of southern california until tomorrow. fire crews in several counties scrambled to put out brush fires. this is a 15-acre fire that shut down the junction of interstate 5 and the antelope valley freeway. that's highway 14, about 90 minutes that freeway was closed. winds were gusting to 65 miles per hour. to our continuing coverage of the u.s. government shutdown, which is now in its fifth day. here's a live picture of capitol hill in washington. earlier today congress held a saturday session on a measure to pay furloughed workers, but there is no apparent progress toward a larger deal. today's action will allow federal workers to get back pay

when the government reopens, wherever that is. the vote was a rare sign of bipartisanship. republicans are insisting on defunding obamacare as a condition of passing a spending plan. democratic leader nancy pelosi today called on house speaker john boehner to allow a vote on a clean bill, something she says some republicans support. >> right now enough republicans have publicly stated their support for a bill that could pass and be on the president's desk today. >> meantime, defense secretary chuck hagel says 400,000 defense civilian employees will be called back to work monday under a law that allows the pentagon to contempt furloughs for those who contribute to military readiness. u.s. capitol police say a man who set himself on fire has

died. he poured gas lean on himself and set himself on fire yesterday. police say the motive isn't known. tonight questions about whether a u.s. military expiration in somali led to the death of a senior leader of the alshah bob group. "the new york times" reports new york seals carried out the raid, and the target was killed in a fire fight. however, the times says its sources say the seals were forced out of the area before they could confirm that killing. reports tonight that u.s. forces captured the leader of al-qaida linked to the bombings in nairobi in 1998. the bombings in august of that year killed more than 220

another bart strike could be five days away. bart and the unions have only until october 10th to make a deal. bart met with negotiators today with little progress. they debated the length of the contract. bart says there's an $89 million gap on compensation between the two sides. pension issues have been resolved. negotiations ended there afternoon, and -- this afternoon and will resume monday. music lovers are flocking for the blue grass festival this weekend. how the family of the late founder plans to keep this free festival going. ♪ >> reporter: the sound of blue grass filled golden gate park today. ♪ >> reporter: and hardly strictly fans felt like dancing. dozens of different bands

playing six stages with no cover charge. >> it's the best thing you can hear live for free. >> it's amazing to see they put this together and not charge. >> reporter: the late warren hellman started the festival. his granddaughters, who performed today, say it's about the music. >> there's no agenda with it. nothing we're trying to prove. we're trying to give people an experience. >> reporter: for 13 years this festival has been free, and the hellman family plans to keep it that way. they have footed the bill for at least the next decade. it typically draws about three- quarters of a million people, meaning no place to park and congested streets. but justin tores who lives a block away, says they're the only problems he sees.

there are reports tonight that at least three new york city police officers were among the motorcycle riders involved

in that road rage incident earlier this week. cbs news reports three officers have come forward, though it's unclear if they saw the altercation between the bike riders and a man driving an suv. all of the officers were off- duty at the time. two other riders are in custody, but no charges have been filed in connection with the case. happening now, people on the gulf coast are getting ready for the arrival of tropical depression karen. national hurricane center just announced the storm has weakened to maximum winds of 35 miles per hour. but karen is still expected to bring significant rain and potential flooding to low lying areas tonight into sunday. >> the update on that status of karen basically a few minutes ago, dropping from a storm to a

with a predawn roar this morning, more than 500 balloons rose into the skies above albuquerque. the international event draws balloonists from around the world to float through the southwestern desert skies. it isn't without risk. one passenger broke her leg this morning when her balloon made a hard landing. check in now with joe, and see how the sports teams are flying today. >> not enough televisions for all the things going on now. pac 12 showdown getting under way tonight and didn't take the cardinals long to get going. opening kickoff for a touchdown. both teams undefeated. 7-0 stanford early in the first quarter. will be a struggle all year. the bears couldn't score a point. throws long for harper, harper is just a little bit open. that will be an 89-yard touchdown pass to close them within 2-points in the second
