good morning everyone. welcome to m on 2. it is sunday october 6th. i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. let's go over to rosemary for a check on how today's shaping up. guess what i was doing last night. >> watching the a's game. >> winner winner. it was an exciting game and they won in the end. that was the great thing, another great thing, the weather for today. mostly sunny, warm. i do see subtle changes in the forecast for the afternoon. some of us will be slight lay cooler. i'll explain that coming up. this morning we're mostly clear, and it is chilly once again. i'll have a look at your current conditions and in the extended forecast a cooldown for the week ahead. more on that coming up. new this morning, two people are in critical condition and one person has died after an early morning car crash in san jose. a picture tweeted by the san jose fire department after 2 this morning, the vehicle split in half after colliding with another vehicle at blossom hill road and winfield boulevard. they also tweeted this picture of a firefighter extinguishing

the flames. so far the cause of that crash is unknown. after a disappointing start to the american league division series friday night, the oakland a's are back. game 2 may have been a night game, but the sun was shining down on sonny gray. the 7th youngest pitcher to start in a's post season games helping the a's to cheer the walkoff 1-0 victory. players say they could not do it without the support of the fans. >> it's nice to have the fans behind you like that. this place is rocking and it's a fun place to be and it's fun to come up to play in a big spot with the crowd going crazy. >> the best of five series now tied at 1 as it shifts to detroit for games 3 and 4. game 3 will take place tomorrow at 10:00 in the morning our time and tuesday game 4 will be held at 2:00. if a game 5 is necessary, it

will be thursday in oakland. scheduled start time, 6 p.m. packed house last night at the coliseum. we like to see your photos. you can e-mail them at photos @ ktvu.com. happening now, workers are scrambling to switch the oakland coliseum from a baseball park to a football stadium. in less than 24 hours. time is ticking down until the raiders take the field for warmups. allie rasmus is live for us at the coliseum where crews have been working. >> you can see behind us some of the raider faithful are up tailgating this morning. this group of people have been here since last night. for the people who work inside the oakland coliseum it has been a nonstop haul since the a's game ended last night. the lights are on at the stadium right now. crews have been working around the clock to convert the coliseum from a baseball to a football stadium. the this conversion is usually

an 18 to 20 hour process. because the a's are in the play playoffs the footballs and baseball seasons overlap. tonight's raiders game against the san diego chargers starts at 8:35 our time. one of the groundskeepers talked about the work that needs to be done in less than 24 hours. >> we had to take the mounds out, bullpens out. so they could come through and drop the seats in. we have to dig holes in the ground. certain things that have to have for it to move along. >> reporter: that work cost the stadium $250,000. this raiders game was initially supposed to be scheduled at 4:00 this afternoon. because of the schedule conflict with the a's they pushed it back to 8:30 tonight and that is the latest start for a raiders game in franchise history. live in oakland, allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. the san fransisco 49ers are also playing at home tonight. the houston texans in town for

sunday night football. both teams are 2 and 2 this season. the 9ers defense limping around with injuries. it's unclear whether the liners will let patrick willis play in today's game. kickoff is scheduled for 5:30. we will be ending mornings on 2 at 9:00 this morning to bring you football on fox. we begin with nfl sunday at 9 a.m. and at 10:00 stay tuned for the seek sea hawks and colts. oakland police are investigating a hit and run that left a man critically injured. it happened yesterday morning near the main library on 14th 14th street and downtown. the driver had left a bar across the street when she saw a group of graffiti vandals tagging the public library. when she confronted the group they began tagging her car. witnesses say the woman got into her car and aimed for the group of taggers and then hit a 25-year-old man who was not part of the group. >> somebody attacked her and she was trying to run away from

people, that's what he said, don't throw him like an animal and drive away. >> witnesses cornered the car two blocks away where she was arrested. she could face charges of assault with a deadly weapon if investigates determine that the crash was intentional. happening today sheriff deputies from contra costa and santa clara counties are flying to israel to take part in antiterrorism training. they will learn how to use technology to prevent and respond to attacks. the week long training will be taught by israeli national police and israeli defense force commanders. pg and e could shut down a gas pipeline as early as this afternoon following a court order that was issued on friday. it runs under britain avenue. the city obtained e-mails from an engineer expressing concerns. one e-mail said are we sitting on a san bruno situation. pg&e insists the line is safe but says it will shut off service to the line. now to our continuing

coverage of the government shut down, and there is good news for hundreds of thousands of furloughed federal workers. civilian employees from the defense department are being asked to return to work this week. a law allows the pentagon to eliminate furloughs for employees whose responsibilities "contribute to the morale, well being and readiness of service members." republicans are floating a proposal that could provide a receiver rare fix to the budget battle. one congressman says lawmakers are discussing a bill that would fund the government and extend the debt ceiling for six weeks. it would give democrats and republicans more time to discuss the issues dividing the parties while reopening the government and bypassing the agreement over obamacare. >> contrary to what the president and those in the white house believe, there are no winners when the federal government shuts down. there are real consequences. >> the house also unanimously

approved a bill yesterday that would authorize back pay for all furloughed federal workers once the government reopens. >> nancy pi low seewe're asking the speaker to bring up a vote to the floor for those republicans and more to show that there is a bipartisan majority to end the government republican government shutdown. >> pelosi sent a letter to john boehner with signatures of democratic house members asking that he allow the house to vote on a so-called clean continuing resolution. it's a spending plan that does not include extra provisions such as funding the affordable health care act. >> i was out at fort con cite yesterday afternoon, spectacular day. i remember her saying it was as warm by the water as it was inland and you nailed it. >> she was right. >> she's always right.

rise and shine. up over the east bay hills this morning, there's a chill in the air. temperatures ranging in the mid- 40s to mid-50s for most. >> an out of control big rig crashed into a car dealership near oxnard. look at that damage. 16 cars were damaged in the accident and the semi truck was hauling bounty paper product when is it sheered off the freeway and landed on the edge of that car lot. the truckdriver was taken to the hospital. firefighters say the strong

winds may have helped fuel the fire that followed. we're following developing news on two major terrorist raids carried out by u.s. special forces. a raid in libya captured an al- qaeda leader involved in the bombings of the u.s. embassy 15 years ago. and in somalia, a team of u.s. navy s.e.a.l. s came under fire and had to withdraw before they could confirm if the target was killed. united nations weapons experts have begun destroying syria's arsenal of weapons. they're using heavy vehicles to run over and destroy missile. it is believed that syria has more than a thousand tons of sarin and other toxic agents. an out of control monster truck slammed into a crowd of spectators at an air show in mexico. eight people were killed and 80

injured. witnesses say the driver lost control of the truck after leaping over a pile of cars and say he lost control because he hit his head on the interior of the vehicle during the demonstration. the air show, which included skydiving, hot air ballooning, motorcycles, and monster trucks was canceled after the accident. a zoo employee is recovering after being severely mauled by a tiger. it happened yesterday at in oklahoma. authorities say the woman stuck her hand in the tigers cage and her jacket sleeve got caught. that's when the 450-pound tiger attacked injuring her arm. the zoo owner says he trains employees never to reach inside the fence. >> my heart goes out to her that one of miters did my tigers did this but she assured me she was going to come back to work.

>> doctors were able to save the victim's arm but she'll need several more surgeries and rehabilitation. the attack is under investigation. a warning if you have a family member who attendance ucla or cal state fullerton. police in southern california are looking for man who may be targeting women on campus. he tried to sexually assault student on both campuses. at cal state north ridge police are investigating two similar incidents. while accepting a reward this weep at her alma mater, hillary clinton joked about her first interaction with her future husband. >> so i got up, and i walked over restaurant over and said if you're going to keep looking at me and i'm going to keep looking back. i'm hillary rodham who are you. >> they graduated from yale law 40 years ago. he sat in the front row during

her acceptance speech. she avoided politics and focused on child development as well as reminiscing about her days at the school. governor jerry brown has signed a bill that limits state and local law enforcement agencies from detaining immigrants. ab4 was written by tom amiano and governor brown signed that bill. in 2014, state and local law enforcement will only be able to detain immigrants for deportation if they've been arrested for serious crimes. >> what we're doing here is we're not using our jails as a holding vat for the immigration service. where they see important matters they can take action. california we're going to stick to our own business. >> critics say the law could result in the release -- the defense attorney association warns it macon applicant with may conflict. a dog's sense of smell may be a way of detecting ovarian

cancer in women. ovarian cancer has a distinct odor and according to them few animals can smell it better than dogs. now they're breaking down the chemicals in ovarian cancer to see what exactly the dogs are smelling. >> this is the size of a tumor when it is generally diagnosed. it is hidden. it is inside the female. this is the size when it should be diagnosed. this is an aspirin and it should be diagnosed when it's about this size. >> once researchers find out what's causing the odor the dog is smelling they can transfer that information to an electronic sensor or artificial nose. >> the nfl is supporting the color pink for the entire month of october. football fans are also raising awareness this weekend. colt fans died the downtown canal pink in indianapolis. they are dedicating the game against the seattle seahawks to

breast cancer awareness. runners will be rocking as the rock 'n' roll marathon gets underway. road closures for the event started yesterday. the off ramp to santa clara street and the bass cam avenue off ramps are closed right now. those should reopen by 1:30 this afternoon. some of the city's downtown streets will remain closed through the afternoon. those closures stretch from north monroe to north 11th. also happening today, the bridge to bridge run benefiting the special olympics of northern california. that race starts at 9 this morning. closures are in place from howard street to bay street and from jefferson street through fisherman's wharf. those delays could last through the morning. organizers issue are are going to keep that finish line open. runners are going to feel the effects of the government shutdown. that post race expo had to be moved which means the 7k run is

runners. if you're heading to the farmers market you may need a jacket. we will see a rapid return to the warmer weather as we get into the next couple of hours. temperatures for our inland communities going to peak today. along the coastline we'll be right about where we were yesterday and slightly cooler. that's because the onshore breeze will make a return a little later today along the beaches and then the cooling trend will follow as we get into the business week. today perhaps slightly cooler at the coast. it's going to take a day or two before it reaches inland. a trough is going to help push this ridge to the east and as a result take a look at your extended forecast. temperatures will begin to fall off monday for everybody, even cooler on tuesday leaving in a slight possibility of a few scattered showers come wednesday. wednesday is going to be the coolest day, and then thursday temperatures are rebounding and we're drying out. if we do receive any rain. for this morning in the 40s for parts of the north bay. valley locations a chilly

it is a race against the clock. the works still ahead for the oakland raiders as they get ready for tonight's game. >> i'm claudine wong. >> okay i'm mike mibach. a small army of workers is on the clock in the east bay. time is ticking as they try to transform o.co to an nfl ready football field. allie rasmus live for us this morning outside the coliseum with more on what officials say is a $250,000 fix. >> reporter: $250,000 and converting the coliseum from a baseball to a football stadium is about an 18 to 20 hour process. usually groundskeepers have more time, but because. a's are in the playoffs, the baseball and football seasons

overlap. the a's games didn't end until 9:40 and the raiders game had to be rescheduled from 1:30 to 8:30 so workers could get the field ready. here's a list of some of the things they have to do. they have to remove the pitchers mound, remove fence posts. they used two giant cranes to add about 6,000 seats. they had to repaint the yard lines and the hash marks. it has been a busy time for coliseum workers. >> we haven't had a couple days off in well over a month. we enjoy doing what we doing and this is what it's all about right here. >> what it goes to show is it's so good for the community, it's so good for the community what the raiders are trying to do. both teams need a new stadium here so there's no overlapping. that's what needs to happen. >> raiders fans with the making oakland better charity have been tailgating across the street from the stadium since last night so they got the

experience the victory celebration last night. they are hoping for another win for the oakland raiders today. they are playing the chargers at 8:30 tonight and that is the latest start time for a raiders game in franchise history. live in oakland allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. here's a look at some of the top stories we're following this morning. the oakland a's head today detroit for game 3. the a's were able to tie up the best of 5 series last night with a win against the tigers. the a's will play detroit on monday and tuesday and then if necessary they will head back to oakland for game 5 on thursday. oakland police are investigating a hit and run crash that left a man critically injured. it happened just after 12:30 yesterday near the main library on 14th street and downtown. the driver was arrested two blocks away. one person has died and two are in critical condition after an early morning car crash in san jose. a car was split into two at blossom hill road. the cause of that crash under

investigation. a sanford university student is in the hospital and under arrest accused of causing a deadly wrong way crash. it is a story we first reported yesterday. that crash happened just before 4 a.m. on 101 near sierra point in south san fransisco. investigators say 24-year-old zachary katz drove northbound in the southbound lanes and hit a taxicab head on a. viewer sent us these pictures of the damage. one of the passengers died when he was ejected, a second passenger the taxi driver and the suspected drunk driver suffered major injuries. new information about the story we first reported yesterday right here on mornings on 2. oakland police say a 21-year-old woman from pittsburgh killed in a triple shooting was an innocent bystander. it happened around 1:30 a.m. investigators say they believe the gunman was arguing with the couple and then opened fire wounding the couple and killing the nearby woman. the couple, 21-year-old man and

his 28-year-old girlfriend is expected to be okay. no arrests have been made. a man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting in san jose two months ago has been arrested in las vegas. u.s. marshals arrested shawn war on friday after getting a tip he was hiding in the area. he's suspected of killing ramon garcia. surveillance video captured the shooting on august 24th in the afternoon on a parking lot in north 3rd. police have not released any information about a possible motive. and for the first time since a major fire, the chevron refiery, the public got a chance to get behind the gates. yesterday was the annual tour community day, but only the first since a fire in 2012 disrupted operations. the state issued 25 citations and chevron has paid out $963,000 in fines. the 60-day cooling off period ends this week and today

barton negotiations between all sides will take a break. the unions and b.a.r.t. management are scheduled to return to the bargaining table tomorrow. they have only until thursday the 10th to reach an agreement before the end of the court ordered cooling off period. workers could go on strike as soon as friday. the unions say they would like a three-year deal. b.a.r.t. wants a four-year contract. the transit agency says there's an 89 million-dollar gap. drivers of 15 year $20 million road improvement project on interstate 80 in the sierras wrapping up right now. the get across 80 campaign began in 1958. at that time roads were severely worn. improvements with are expected to move along traffic smoothly during the winter months. the red flag warning in the bay area may be over this morning, but crews are still

warning people that fire danger is still high. the canfield fire protection district held this fire evacuation drill yesterday. the fire chief says even though the winds have died down residents should be cautious. the problem is not over because the wind stopped. the vegetation is still dry. we're still at full alert. >> fire crews say once fog returns to the bay area the risk of fire will drop. the fire prevention week kicks off across the bay area. it gives fire stations the opportunity to educate the public. this year's focus is on prevents kitchen fires which are often to blames for house fires. >> a lot of activity this past week in regard to fires. this week rosemary calling for a slight chance of rain. >> we have our humid city level moving in the right direction. they'll be coming up as we get into the workweek. for today at this hour, we're very dry out there, and i do

see a warmup into the future for your sunday afternoon. giving you a live look over the east bay him. we've got the sun shining this  morning. it's a chilly start without cloud cover to help insulate us. temperatures bottoming out in the 40s in many spots. take a look at the calm conditions for the north bay into the east bay. yesterday the winds were still blowing quite robust over the east bay hills. half-moon bay and oakland a lot chillier this morning. you are the two areas that were actually the anomaly for yesterday. 48 this is actually the airport, 50s reported in downtown oakland. 50 degrees at half-moon bay. yesterday morning half-moon bay sat right about 68, 70 degrees all morning long. you should be feeling that notable difference. in the north bay back in the 40s. 44 santa rosa, napa a chillier start. 43 in fairfield. 43 walnut creek. last half hour we went north.

let's go to the peninsula at this time. 56 belmont. a chilly start for you palo alto. 46 degrees outside your door with plenty of sunshine. so if you bring along that light jacket the sun will help you feel -- make you feel not too bad out there. ridge of high pressure still dominating our weather pattern but beginning to see a few changes. this trough will be working its way closer to the coast. it's going to push that ridge of the way and that will lead to our cooldown. even the possibility of rain coming our way and i want to pull you in closer because notice a new clouds coming in from the south. this is going to help bring back the onshore breeze. along the beaches we may actually see a bit of a drop in temperatures. still going to be mild. still going to be sunny. a drop in temperatures. over yesterday's highs and i think for the afternoon these high clouds will be in the forecast. let me run you through the forecast here, and there they go. 3, 4:00 in the afternoon you may look up and see just a few high clouds in the sky, that's

wife are scheduled to help build new homes in oakland tomorrow. then on tuesday. the two will travel to east san jose to help repair the homes of veterans and seniors. california republicans are meeting in orange county this weekend for their annual convention. yesterday the delegates talked about their concern over the party's image and brainstormed ways to recruit new gop voters. they've also been discussing who will run against governor brown in the next election. there's some candidates that are running, and there's some candidates who are not yet announced who are running, and i think you'll be impressed. >> former lieutenant governor able mall doe that doe and tim donnelly have announced plans to run for governor next year. people in san fransisco will be able to cast their votes for the upcoming november election starting tomorrow. early voting gets underway at 8:00 at city hall. election day will be held on november 5th this year. fleet week in san fransisco begin this is week with much

of 230 residents from a housing unit and 32 patients at a base hospital were moved to over hospitals as a precaution. new patients were not accepted due to a power outage. the fires burned more than 1,000 acres. we've added a staff of over 500 additional firefighters in various roles. it would be a number of assets spread throughout the country. >> a 15-acre fire in los angeles county shut down two freeways for about 90 minutes yesterday. there's a red flag warning for much of california through this afternoon. police in redwood city are searching for the driver of a deadly hit and run crash. police found a man lying on the ground about 7:00 last night. that man died at the scene. police say the witnesses told them a dark colored minivan hit the man and drove off. we are finding out more about last sunday's altercation between bike riders in new york and a man driving with his family in a range rover. there are reports that at least three new york city police

officers were among the motorcycle riders involved in the road rage incident. the officers were apparently off duty at the time. at least one of them was an undercover officer who told superiors he did not get involved because he wanted to protect his cover. so far three of the bikers have been arrested in connection with the attack. four u.s. soldiers have been killed in southern afghanistan. a military official confirmed the soldiers were killed by improvise #-d explosive device. they were killed during a partnered operation, but officials are not providing any other details. 2146 u.s. military members have died in afghanistan and ieds are considered one of the most commonly used weapons in those deaths. president obama says the u.s. is committed to ending its combat mission in afghanistan on time. >> we are going to end combat operations in afghanistan at the end of 2014. >> the president also says negotiations continue about whether or not to leave troops on the ground to serve in

training and advisory roles. he says that will depend on the cooperation of the afghan government. police in washington d. c. are reviewing whether it was necessary to kill a woman who rammed a barricade outside the white house last thursday. police say 34-year-old miriam kerry led them on a high speed chase from the white house to the capital with her 1-year-old daughter in the car. she was shot and killed near a senate building. her family is now questioning if police followed protocol. law enforcement officials say she was delusional and thought president obama was communicating with her. under the plan all city parks will close between midnight and 5 a.m. supporters of the legislation say it would keep homeless people from living in parks and reduce crime but critics say it will would criminalize the homeless. the government shutdown is in its first weekend. many of new york's federally

balloon festival. it'sed world's largest ballooning event. hundreds of people make their way to the festivities to watch 600 hot air balloons light up the sky. some have unique shapes and even characters like angry bird and darth vader. it continues through october 13 october 13th. three americans and a military officer were killed in columbia when their plane went down during a u.s. antidrug mission. it happened yesterday. two other americans on the plane were seriously injured. the names of the americans have not been released and the cause of the crash is under investigation. an investigation is also underway in minneapolis after a 9-year-old boy snuck on to a plane and then flew all the way to las vegas. the boy was apparently able to sneak past the security check point, past a gate agent inside and then on to a delta flight. the boy did not even have a boarding pass. the whole thing was captured on surveillance video and it wasn't until the plane arrived in nevada that he was

" one congressman tells cnn lawmakers are privately discussing a bill that would fund the government and extend the debt ceiling for six weeks. that would give democrats and republicans more time to negotiate the fiscal issues dividing the parties while reopening the government and bypassing this disagreement over the affordable care act. >> contrary to what the president and those in the white house believe, there are no winners when the federal government shuts down. there are real consequences.

the ground crew at the oakland coliseum working through the night. their race to get the field football ready by tonight's game. good morning and welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. raiders kick off 12 hours away. a small army of workers is on the clock in the east bay. time is ticking down as they try to transform o.co from a baseball playoff field to an nfl gridiron. allie rasmus is live for us this morning on what officials say is a $250,000 change over. >> reporter: converting the

coliseum from a baseball to football field is an 18 to 20 hour process. normally work crews would have more time to get it done but because the a's are in the playoffs, baseball and football seasons are overlapping here. that means a lot of work for the people at o.co coliseum. they've been here since the overnight hours. the a's game didn't end until 9:40 last night and today's raiders game had to be pushed back from 1:30 to 8:30 tonight so workers could get the field ready. they had to remove the pitchers mound, remove fence posts, use two giant cranes to add about 6,000 feet. they had to repaint yard lines and hash marks and go through the usual safety inspections. with the a's in the playoffs and the raiders season in full swing it's been a very busy time. >> the a's playoff and the raiders we enjoy doing what we're doing and this is what it's all about right here, post season. >> what it goes to show is it's so good for the community what the a's did, it's so good for

and here's a look at some of the top stories we are following this morning. the oakland a's headed to detroit for game 3 of the american league division series. the a's were able to tie it up. there it is, a walk off win. best of 5 series. thisthe a's will play detroit on monday and tuesday and if necessary. a hit and run crash happened at 12:30 yesterday morning by the main library. and one person has died. two others are in critical condition after an early morning crash. the car was split into two at blossom hill road. the cause of that crash is under investigation. stanford university student is in the hospital and under arrest accused of causing a deadly wrong way crash while driving drunk. it is a story we first reported yesterday right here on mornings on 2. that crash happened just before 4 a.m. on highway 101 near sierra point in south city.

investigators say 24-year-old zachary katz drove northbound in the southbound lanes and hit a taxicab head on. a viewer sent us these pictures of the damage. one of the passengers died when he was ejected from the cab. a second passenger, the taxi driver and the suspected drink driver suffered major injuries. new information about the story we also first reported right here on mornings on 2. a 21-year-old woman from pittsburgh with one killed in a triple shooting in that she was an innocent bystander. it happened at 1:30 a.m. yesterday on broadway near 14 14th street. investigators say they believe the gunman was arguing with the couple and opened fire wounding that couple and killing the nearby woman. a couple, a 21-year-old man and his 20-year-old girlfriend is expected to be okay. no arrest have been made. a man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting have been arrested in las vegas. u.s. marshals arrested shawn moore on friday.

he's suspected of killing 22- year-old ramon garcia. surveillance video captured that shooting. it happened on august 24th in the afternoon in this parking lot which is on north 3rd and east julian streets. police have not released information on a motive for the shooting. for the first time since a major fire at the chevron refinery, the public got a chance to look at operations. yesterday was the third annual community tour day. it was the first held since a fire back in august of 2012. this sent 15,000 people to area hospitals with breathing problems. the state has issued 25 citations over that fire and chevron has paid out $963,000 in fines. the 60-day cooling off period ends this week and today b.a.r.t. negotiations between all sides will take a break. the onions and b.a.r.t. management are scheduled to return to the bargaining table tomorrow. they have only until thursday the 10th to reach an agreement before the end of the cooling

off period. workers could go on strike as soon as friday. besides increases in salary and benefits the unions say they would like a three-year deal. b.a.r.t. says it would like a four-year contract. there is an $89 million gap on compensation. getting to tahoe and reno could be easier for drivers. a 15-year $820 million road improvement project on interstate 80 in the sierra is just about to wrap up. the get across 80 campaign began in 1998. at that time the roads were severely worn. the improvements are expected to move along traffic more smoothly during the winter months. an average of 170,000 vehicles drive over donners summit each day. crews are warning people that fire danger is still high. the kent field fire protection district held a fire evacuation drill yesterday. the fire chief says even though the wind have died down residents should be cautious. >> it's not over because the wind stopped. the eventual table is city dry.

welcome back, giving you a live look at the sunny start in san fransisco. a view there. if you're going out to the hardly strictly bluegrass festival, sunny skies and mild conditions. some people living along the northern gulf coast are finding relief now that what was tropical storm karen has been downgraded to a depression. winds are now at 35 miles per hour, and all tropical storm warnings have been canceled. however, forecasters say the threat of danger is not over. the national hurricane center says up to 3 inches of rain could fall through monday and that could cause localized coastal flooding. >> most importantly what i think is that we need to be prepared no matter what, and the storm right now is obviously, you know, it's not going to be as impactful as we

anticipated in the beginning. >> karen is expected to make landfall sometime this afternoon. as it weakens it's going to continue on its path across the northern gulf towards florida. new this morning, a strong earthquake hit southern mexico a few hours ago. the 5.2 magnitude quake, there is a strong earthquake in mexico city. an earthquake alert system went off warning people to stay away from elevators and windows. so far there are no reports of damage or injuries. strong gusty winds are stoking several fires in southern california. one of the largest is at camp pendleton. that fire forced the evacuation of 230 residents from a housing unit and 32 parents parent patients at a base hospital were moved to other hospitals. new parents were not accepted due to a power outage. the fire has burned more than 1,000 acres. >> this particular alert we've added a staff of over 500 additional firefighters in various roles, engines, strike

teams, aircraft. it'd be a number of assets spread throughout the county. >> a 15-acre fire in los angeles county shut down two freeways for 90 minutes yesterday. there is a red flag warning for much of southern california through this afternoon. police in redwood city are searching for the driver of a deadly hit and run crash. police found a man lying on the ground on marshal and maple streets about 7:00 last night. that man died at the scene. police say witnesses told them a dark colored minivan hit that man and drove off. we are now finding out more about last sunday's altercation between a motorcyclist in new york and a man driving with his family in a range rover. there are reports that at least three new york city police officers were among the motorcycle riders involved in the road rage incident. the officers were apparently, though off duty at the time, and at least one of them was an undercover officer who told superiors he did not get involved because he wanted to protect his cover. so far three bikers have been arrested in connection with

that attack. four u.s. soldiers have been killed in southern afghanistan. a military official confirmed they were killed by an explosive device. they were killed during a partnered operation but officials are not providing any other details. 2146 u.s. military members have died in afghanistan. ied's are considered one of the most commonly used weapons in those deaths. president obama says the u.s. is committed to ending its combat mission in afghanistan on time. >> we are going to end combat operations in afghanistan at the end of 2014. >> the president also says negotiations continue about whether or not to leave troops on the ground to serve in training roles. he. police in washington d. c. are reviewing whether it was necessary to kill a woman who rammed a barricade outside the white house. 34-year-old miriam carey led them on a high speed chase.

she was shot and killed near senate building. her family is questioning if police followed protocol. they say kerry was suffering from post partum depression. law enforcements officials say she was delusional and thought president obama was communicating with her. a controversial proposal to close san fransisco parks during certain hours will be considered. under the plan all city parks will close between midnight and 5 a.m. supporters of the legislation say it would keep homeless people fromming living in parks and reduce crime but critics say it would criminalize the homeless. the federal government shutdown is in its first weekend and tourists in new york are not happy. many of the city's federally run attractions are closed. among the biggest disappointment for tourists is the closure of the statue of liberty. some visitors say they plan their train years in advance and hope the government can get its act together. >> the only way i can tolerate this is when i think of the other people suffering for this and how much worse they're

an investigation is underway in minneapolis after a 9-year-old boy sneaks on to a plane and flies all the way to las vegas. now the boy was apparently able to sneak past security check point, past a gate agent inside and right on to that dell to flight. the whole thing was captured on surveillance video and it wasn't until the plane arrived in nevada that he was questioned by the airline. >> i got an 8-year-old son so that freaked me out. >> that's shocking. >> that's crazy to me. >> in a brief statement, delta said we are investigating the incident and cooperating with
