6:02 am
>> our meteorologist p.j.s would be nice, we do have a change, still mild to warm but not as warm as yesterday, especially by the coast, 70s and 80s but temperatures are taking a dip, clouds there will clear out, so cool for some, mild for others, partly sunny and cloudy, a weak system coming in which will turn the wind more westerly yet 45 napa and santa rosa, 62 san francisco, so there is a huge difference in some of these, fairfield made it to 49, the cloud cover keeping some more 50s down towards san jose parts of the peninsula as well. see those right there, they will thin out and move out and this system works in, we are on the southern edge but will give us a west breeze, so san francisco going to go 74 but you will hit that by noon and drop fast here as the wind does turn westerly or at least northwesterly. this is choice, micro climate forecast, 70s, and then inland you start to see some around the bay some 70s, upper 70s in land, very very low 80s and temperatures topping out for areas from 81 to 83 degrees so

6:04 am
to determine the cause of this fire. now he can't do that until the building inspector says it is okay, that is the gentleman standing there in that yellow jacket speaking to the firefighter. now as we speak off and on firefighters have been intermittently putting out hot spots and still hosing it down from the outside because it is still too dangerous to enter, firefighters arrived here at the house at 4:00 a.m. after a passing motorist called in to 911 reporting smoke in the area. the home had flames shooting from the top of the roof and it was engulfed, causing firefighters to attack it from the outside, surrounding homes were evacuated and they were able to knock down the flames within 20 minutes, the house had been abandoned and there was no electricity which leads officials to believe that the fire appears to be suspicious. >> we had the building inspector run the address and
6:05 am
found out it is set up for possible renovations, so at that point we can only assume no one is inside but as soon as conditions are safe we will go in and do a check to confirm this there is no one in the structure. >> again once the fire inspector is able to enter the home they are going to see if it was possibly a transient trying to stay warm inside or if there was anyone else inside the structure, a building inspector needs to determine again if it is safe, make sure the roof won't collapse if anyone enters, in the meantime firefighters are watching this house closely. it is still smoldering and in the last 45 minutes we have seen flames so they are going to stay here, watch it and make sure to house down for hot spots. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> 6:05. a hotel in richmond has been

that way. we are looking at the commute at the toll plaza. it is about a 10 to 15 minute delay with no major problems there. westbound 580 right near 205 there is a crash on the shoulder. so watch for that. it is actually not causing a huge delay because it is already slow through this area. if you are driving to castro valley already getting slow as you drive through the 238 interchange and head over to interstate 880. if you are driving on southbound 880 the traffic is only slow for a little bit right now in hayward, 6:19, let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal, a shot there, i had the pleasure driving over that, very nice ride, not much yet changing no breeze, still slightly offshore. so temperatures still nice, not as warm as on the weekend, yesterday san francisco 83, oakland 85, half moon bay 80 and santa cruz 89, today 74, 75, 68 and 80 degrees, so still very nice just not as warm as yesterday, we topped out
6:20 am
yesterday may not see temperatures like that again for a week, high and mid-level clouds there starting to push off east as this system a cool front, i don't want to say a cold front at least not down here, up there it is, well it will be dry there just not warm, 48 right now, the wind chill is 43, partly to mostly cloudy, the rain has moved off so okay conditions, there is rain northwest but i think that will not be a factor, just days of play just not warm, 30 tahoe, 43 ukia, sacramento 50, 40 there, half moon bay, yet 62 san francisco, 50s due to the cloud cover south, upper 40s, low 50s firefield, east bay, we don't get much of a breeze, still offshore for many, easterly, easterly, easterly, or northerly, little component of a west for santa rosa, but not much, sfo showing west but only three, so there is not much of a breeze yet, which is why i still think we get 70 to
6:21 am
80s but once this system inches closer then it turns or westerly so warm today just not as warm as the weekend, scattered high clouds, a break for a while but a rather strong and low level drops in wednesday and temperatures take a pretty good little plunge, this is the rain forecast or the cloud and rain forecast showing what is happening by wednesday, in there they will get snow, we will get the cold air and breeze by wednesday, by thursday gone, go back to a cool breezy northwest flow in that direction that will give us a cool down, cooler today, kind of the transition day, so still mild to warm for some inland, still 80s, and that, 70s to 80s, 74 to 84 to 86, gilroy was warmer there, 70s and 80s except there more 60s and 70s, partly sunny and cloudy, cooler then, they did put that in if it decides to drift further west, it looks

6:32 am
because the system moving in there eventually will turn that more westerly although now things are quiet there. some rain up there just not us here, maybe wednesday more cold and windy with snow there but today 60s start off san francisco hit 74 but will cool down, as micro climate shows that and those are your temperatures there and we will top out there but afternoon today the 80s gone for at least a week or so and much colder air arrives today 80s interior, 60s 70s by the water. here is sal. >> steve, good morning, right now traffic is doing pretty well around the bay area, if you are driving let's say to 880 north and southbound it does look good although it is more crowded as you drive past the coliseum, crowded already at the toll plaza, they have turned the lights on and it is a 20 minute delay before you make it on to the bridge, so 20
6:33 am
minutes before, by the way good news they have re-opened the treasure island off-ramp westbound just after -- just before the tunnel there so you will be able to access treasure island from the westbound direction. also the morning commute looks good, no problems there, southbound 101 is slow from there, i want to remove this, it is slow through petaluma and gets better by navato, 6:33, back to the desk. >> we begin with developing news, we have been following for a while from palo alto, the investigation new underway into a suspicious early morning house fire. ktvu's janine de la vega was first reporter on the scene and has been talking to investigators out there. >> reporter: yeah, and one of things they have not been able to do is get inside the house, so right now you can see firefighters have put up a ladder there.
6:34 am
they will use tools and start collapsing the roof. its already partially collapsed but they want to make sure they collapse the rest of it and that way they believe they will then be able to enter the house and will be deemed safe because again they still have no idea if anybody is inside. let's go to video we took earlier that shows them fighting the fire. they arrived here at the house on madda deero avenue at 4:00 a.m. after a motorist called it in to 911 reporting smoke in the fire, the flames were shooting from the top and engulfed causing them to attack it from the outside, surrounding homes were evacuated and they knocked down the flames within 20 minutes. we are told this house had been abandoned for at least about 20 years, there was no running electricity according to them, which leads them to believe it may be suspicious, now a neighbor told us that she heard strange noises from that house before. >> sometimes there are a few
6:35 am
noises like there are people over there. i am not quite sure like if they are homeless or what their situation is but sometimes you do hear noises. i had heard like some rustling around earlier in the evening around like 7:00 or 8:00 but i didn't think anything of it because sometimes there are animals in the backyard. >> fire investigators will look into that, that neighbor had two sons shaken up but everybody is now save. once the inspector is able to enter the home they will see if a transient was inside trying to stay warm or anyone else inside the structure, again they still have no idea. back out here live i am not sure if you can hear that but sounds like a chainsaw because again they are trying to collapse the roof again so they can enterit and start
6:36 am
investigating what actually caused it. they have been putting out hot spots because it is still smoldering and they will stay here and watch it and we will continue to monitor it to determine was there anybody in there, can they determine a cause, the house i forgot to mention was actually slated for a remodel, so again, nobody was inside there, no electricity, so that is why it appears they are saying to be suspicious, live from palo alto, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2news. >> they are still on the island after two small fires there caused a track back up on the bridge. the fire was reported at 8:00 last night and burned 4 acres there in steep brush. there are few hydrants around and the water pressure is low so a fire breath was brought in to spray water on the flames from the bay. firefighters say the wind was a major factor in this fire. >> it is a very light breeze
6:37 am
here that helped fuel the fire and bring it a little bit up the hill here but a greater breeze and a real windy day would have moved significantly rapid. >> the fire did not cause any injures or major damage but it did send a big plume of smoke, which of course distracted bay bridge drivers. it caused a big traffic jam for several hours. again those crews are still watching for flare-ups. happening now a tanker truck flipped over this morning in richmond and a nearby hotel, the america's best valley inn has been evacuated. that truck is leaking. ktvu's alex savidge is there with the details of what is happening now and how they plan to move that truck. >> good morning, dave. i am told this truck belongs to a company called allied propane, the subsidiary of chevron, here is the plan now, what needs to happen is the
6:38 am
propane inside the tank will be siphoned out into this tank before they actually move it. it will be a slow process i am told. in the meantime the hotel, the america's best value inn has been cleared out as a precaution. firefighters say they are not worried about fire but fumes. the issue is this leaking tanker truck you can see here still on its side on the on- ramp to eastbound 80. let me show you the scene after it happened. this truck was turning on to the freeway and the driver lost control and the rear tank tipped over. it was carrying propane and began to leak after the crash. at this point firefighters say there is no liquid coming out, only vapors and the plan to is have chevron, the company that owns the rig, off-load the
6:39 am
propane. >> they are going to empty it into an empty truck, they are going to off-load the product on to that truck here and we will use our tow trucks already here to get the vehicle back on the road. >> but in the meantime it is causing a real traffic mess, both the onand off-ramps do remain closed but traffic is still moving on the freeway. a richmond fire captain tells me it will take several more hours to empty out that propane and clear this tanker truck, getting all the roads back open in this area, live this morning in richmond, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> well, the clock is ticking towards another possible commute meltdown in the bay area, bart workers could be on strike by the end of the week, the cooling-off period ends thursday night and a strike could begin friday morning. now for the heat is now on for the two sides to reach an agreement before the strike deadline, contract talks between management and bart unions are set to resume this
