now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." live pictures outside san francisco general hospital where a police investigation is underway after a mother showed up in the middle of the night with her infant child who has died. the questions they are trying to answer -- coming up in a live report. welcome, once again, to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. how are we looking, steve. we're looking pretty good. we have clear skies. a little change. it's right there. on its way. it will give us partly cloudy skies in the north bay later on. it's the leading edge of a big change for us tomorrow in the form of colder and breezy. i don't think much in the way of rain. but the sierra nevada will get snow. clear skies, cold to mild. mostly sunny, partly sunny later on. a little cooler on the afternoon highs. starting off with a lot of 40s, 50s. oakland is in there, concord is in there.

there's big differences in the temperatures. the trifecta, 51. clear skies. right there. that will start to give some partly cloudies later on to the north bay. we're in between the weak system yesterday and the very strong low which is dropping in tomorrow. san francisco, 76 yesterday. not today. we'll go 68. i think some partly cloudy skies develop by this afternoon as well as that system gets a little bit closer. sunny, nice. it will be cooler today. if -- dash going for a couple of -- we're going for a couple of low 80s today. here's sal. we have traffic calming down a little bit. we had a rough start. things are getting a little bit better. the eastshore freeway is moderately heavy coming in from richmond, it's getting heavier by the minute as we get to the peak of the morning commute. looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. that's surprisingly light. it's lighter than it normally is at this time. we'll not quibble with that.

traffic looks good coming into san francisco with no major problems. i want to mention that once on the bridge, it looks all right. this is a look at the commute in san jose this commute here. a lot of road sensors are very slow. something surprise,ing, how cloe -- surprising how slow 87 traffic is. i think people are avoiding 280. 87 is not the answer. back to the desk. we begin with developing news from san francisco. police are investigating the suspicious death of a 7-month- old baby. ktvu's alex savidge joins us live from san francisco general hospital with the many questions surrounding this tragedy. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. police say a woman brought her 7-month-old baby here to san francisco general hospital early this morning. it's unclear exactly what was wrong with that child but we do understand the baby died, was

pronounced dead at the hospital, just after midnight. as we watched police towing away a white car from the hospital parking, we understand that car is related to the case. it's unclear who the car belongs to. the baby arrived here at the hospital just about 12:30 or so this morning. the medical examiner was called out not long after that and investigators determined the death of this child was suspicious. police are only saying it's a 7- month-old baby. we don't know if it was a bay or a girl. the cause of death remains unclear. the detectives were here at the emergency room this morning. at the same time, police secured a louse on monterey boulevard just off 280 in san francisco. earlier this morning, crime scene tape was put up across the front entrance at that location and police say that scene is connected to the death of this baby. right now, homicide investigators are interviewing the baby's mother. they are also talking to other family members and trying to get a sense of what was going

on last night/early this morning, as this child was brought here to the hospital and they are trying to understand how this 7-month-old baby wound up dead. live in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. republicans, including john boehner, are talking about the government shutdown. this is the eighth day. no progress appears to have been made. these are some republican leaders who are speaking. let's listen in. >> that keep critical portions of the federal government open, nearly half of the federal government now, we have passed the bills in the house to open up the federal government and yet the senate refuses to act. that's not leadership. leadership is not -- leadership is -- when you say you are not gonna negotiate, that's not leadership or you say that they are just holding the united states hostage, that's not leadership. leadership is certainly not when you are not willing to

address the big issues, the major issues that face the country. we're lengthed to govern and -- elected to govern and make the decisions and they want to take the easy way out. that's not -- not acceptable to us or the american people. >> you are listening live. meanwhile, what's happening today, democrats controlling the senate plan to move quickly toward a vote to allow the government to borrow more money. the measure is expected to provide enough borrowing room to last beyond next year's election. we are expected to hit the debt ceiling on october 17th last week. it's not expected to include new spending cuts sought by the republicans. so that, of course, still remains to be scene how the government would deal with that pending deadline. and kyla campbell will have a live report at 7:15. how the shutdown is affecting marin county businesses.

time is now 7:06. well, new this morning, firefighters in san francisco investigating how a car on fire ended up parked on a hill leading to twin peaks. it was found about 4:30 on marview way and fairview court. it was burning when the firefighters got there. the driver of the car, still has not been found. also new this morning, firefighters in the santa cruz mountains are battling a grass fire in felton. it started at 3:45 this morning on lomako road. two acres of grass have burned. and firefighters in santa cruz county are in aptos investigating a fire that burned two homes on redwood drive. no word of injuries but the neighborhood was briefly evacuated. the cause of the fire is under investigation. well, the clock is ticking toward the thursday night deadline in the b.a.r.t.

labor dispute. there's a major new development. there's new hope for a possible settlement when the talks resume at 9:30 this morning. today's contract talks come after the most encouraging sign yet. they may be closer to a deal. ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live. she's at the richmond b.a.r.t. station now to explain what's going on. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. last night, union leaders announced they would not be issuing a 72-hour strike notice. they've always on that in the past. so a lot of folks are thinking that perhaps the two sides might be closer to ironing out a deal. now, last night in oakland, the negotiators left the building very quietly and that is because both sides are not saying much to the media because of this gag order issued by the mediator. experts say that silence about closed door talks is usually an indication that a deal is closer. although, a gag order earlier this summer didn't make much of a difference at the bargaining

table. the coolingoff period ends at 11:59 wednesday night. we spoke to one passenger who said the last strike strike hurt his family's livelihood. >> they shouldn't go on strike. it work on -- i work on the b.a.r.t. myself. i play music on the b.a.r.t. when they went on strike, no money was coming in. it was very hard for us to get by. >> reporter: by law, the unions don't have to give notice. they did say all options are on the table. while both sides have agreed on pension issues, there's till work to be on wages, pensions, healthcare issues. if the strike happens, b.a.r.t. will be using bus shuttles, as it did earlier this summer. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. other agencies are getting ready to expand service if b.a.r.t. workers walk off the job. b.a.r.t. would strand 400,000 daily b.a.r.t. riders. commuters are urged to use

casual carpool, take a.c. transit, samtrans or caltrain, if possible. the san francisco bay ferry is getting ready to expand service. the ferry service will announce its schedule for increased service across the bay in case there is a strike. you can remember, bay area commuters packed the ferries and buses and trains during the last b.a.r.t. strike back in july. there's also a new report on how many people use b.a.r.t. to get around. b.a.r.t. says more than 444,000 passengers rode b.a.r.t. strains on friday r that's when there were two big events in the bay area. that was the fifth highest ridership day ever. b.a.r.t. attributes the strike to as fans taking b.a.r.t. to the playoffs and also the first night of the bluegrass festival in golden gate park in san francisco. make sure you stay right here with us at ktvu for all of the continuing coverage of the

b.a.r.t. contract talks. you can get updates by going to ktvu.com. 7:10. a bill to help guns off the streets of oakland is now on governor brown's desk. if he signs it, oakland could be the only city in the state with the right to make its own rules governing gun licensing and registration. the bill was introduced by rob bonta. he says the legislation is not a cure for the city's gun violence but it will help to track guns. this bill is one of a dozen proposed gun laws in the governor's office. 7:11. expect more traffic on highway 101 after a new casino opens in rohnert park. "the press democrat" reports 40,000 more cars a day may clog highway 101 after the new resort and casino opens in november. that could cause backups from the rohnert park expressway all the way to petaluma. casino officials say the added

traffic is unlikely to cause big backups because traffic is gonna be spread out over the 24 hours the casino is open. 7:11. it could be san francisco's biggest eviction in 40 years. why as many as 300 people may be forced out of their homes. also, caught on camera, want to show you this. an armed robbery that went wrong for the robber in new york. the victim turned the tables and that suspect went running. good morning. we have a mess in downtown san jose. 87 northbound is very slow because of a crash downtown. we'll tell you what's going on and why it's so slow. the string of nice weather is about to come to an end. it will be okay. i think you will notice a change brewing for today and tomorrow. we'll have details -- coming up.

welcome back. 7:14. in brentwood, new york an armed robber suddenly became a victim when the store clerk caught back. it was all caught on video. look. the gunman demanding cash but the clerk pulled out a machete. he chased the man through a parking lot. police are still looking for that pretty scared bam -- gunman. we have continuing coverage of the government shutdown. in the last ten minutes, house republicans and democrats held news conferences. each party blames the other for the ongoing partial government shutdown. kyla cam -- cam bem -- kyla campbell joins us live from washington. >> reporter: john boehner is repeating demands. the democratic-led senate is introducing a bill that would

increase the government's borrowing limit by $1 trillion, giving it another credit until next year's congressional elections. due to procedure it may take one week to house the bill, giving the house a day or two to react on it. the house speaker says there's not enough to raise the debt ceiling. >> there's never been a president in the history that did not negotiate over the debt limit. never. not once. as a matter of fact, president obama negotiated with me over the debt limit in 201 1. >> reporter: right now we're taking a live look with house democrats. i'll going to check in on their latest reaction to the budget battle and have both sides for you. i'm working on that story for 8:15. live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. the faa is recalling 800 workers who had been on furlough. most of those faa employees oversee safety operations of

the major airlines. the rest keep an eye on production of aircraft and parts labeled "most critical." the airlines and workers inspect their own work but the federal inspectors provide a fresh pair of eyes. experts say the potential for a safety lapse increases without the benefit of the extra oversight. the government shutdown keeping tourists away from marin county. beaches along the point reyes national seashore and muir woods are closed because of the shutdown. that means fewer customers for the businesses like drake's oyster bay. >> here we go again. one more thing. >> the pelican inn, also seeing a lot of cancellations. just two of the inn's seven rooms were booked last night. a high school teacher in fremont has been arrested on suspicion of inappropriately touching a student. they arrested the 66-year-old

union city man on friday after following up on a report from a parent. the unidentified teacher was cited and released. a former uc davis chemist will stand trial on explosives and weapons charges. david snyder is accused of setting off an explosion at his apartment complex in january. the blast injured him and forced dozens to evacuate their homes. snyder is free on $2 million bail. he's expected to be arraigned next month. 7:18. sal's been covering a lot of crashes this morning. what just happened in san jose? >> this crash, northbound 87 near taylor street downtown san jose really has 87 a mess. i'm gonna go to the maps first to show you where it is. it's right there in the middle of downtown san jose. you can see the road sensors are very slow all the way through coming up to downtown san jose. we also happen to have ta camera to -- happen to have a camera to show you. it's backed up from 85 all the

way up into downtown san jose. what is usually kind of a good alternate to 280 is not. i wouldn't recommend it at all. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza where the traffic has been moderate. this is a 20, 25-minute delay. highway 24 is slow coming into the tunnels because of some earlier problems near highway 13. 7:18. let's go to steve. all right, sal. sunrise for those of you listening. you are not watching. you are listening. clear skies. cold out there for some. some low 40s for many. it will be clear and then we'll pick up clouds coming in later especially in the together bay, the leading edge of it is working its way into northern california. it's not so much the front. it's the slow which will drop in, we think, somewhere east of sacramento. more towards the sierra nevada. that will give them some rain and snow. for us, it will turn colder and windy. that will be tomorrow. today, though, we have temperatures coming down. they will be pretty good.

he reportedly took told his -- he reportedly told his supervisor he did that because he was running out of time. all of that mail disposed of will be delivered today by a different mailman. americans trying to sign up for health insurance under the new law are experiencing problems. the online enrollment system was down again early this morning for updadz. tech -- updates. tech experts have been called in to fix glitches. experts say there's still time, though, to fix the problems before the new coverage begins in january. there is a surge in demand for housing in tracy which had been considered a rather depressed real estate market. that's because of the amazon distribution center that's now open in tracy. property managers say all of the new workers need places to live, increased demand is driving up rental costs and home prices. that's likely to continue. amazon plans to add another 300

in the south bay. here at the bay bridge, we're getting a slowdown, weekend. it's about a 15, 20-minute delay which is better than normal. but still backed up, especially in the right lanes. if you are a fast track user, you are getting by better than most. the morning commute is getting more crowded. it's not stop and go. 580 traffic is also crowded beginning near the lakeshore curve. 87 northbound, downtown san jose at taylor. they are still clearing an injury crash. 280 is also a big mess and so is 85. one of the things that you can't do is use one as the alternate. if you are going a short distance, i would recommend side roads to avoid all of this. on the peninsula, southbound 101 near 92, there is word of a crash here. let's go back to the crash. we have new information on the asiana crash at sfo last summer. three people were killed. dozens more were hurt. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom now to tell us what

the pilots are saying now about that disaster. pam? >> well, the investigation continues into exactly what went wrong that sent the passenger jet slamming into the runway at sfo. this morning "the wall street journal" reports that the pilots have a different report of what happened than the preliminary findings. the paper said the pilots have said the problem with the jet's speed control system was a major factor in that deadly accident. so far, the ntsb says it's not uncovered any mechanical or electrical problems with the plane prior to impact. the agency says it is still focusing on why the pilots reportedly failed to check the air speed until it was too late. now, in our next hour of "mornings on 2," we have more of what the pilots are saying. more on what the data flight recorder shows in the public hearings that are now scheduled. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:33. we have new details from vallejo this morning about an

early-morning shooting. police say a clerk at the roadway in on mariposa street was shot early today. we're told his injuries are serious -- her injuries are serious. but she's expected to survive. police still searching for the suspect. they haven't given us any information about a possible motive but the investigation continues. 7:33. san jose police say a driver who crashed into an apartment complex this morning was asleep at the wheel. it happened around 3:40 a.m. on camden avenue near hillsdale. the driver crashed into three parked cars, two poles and then slammed into the apartment complex. the truck also hit a gas meter but pg&e says the crash did not cause a gas leak. >> he looked tired. he said he had fallen asleep coming around the corner. and -- veered off the road and woke up in front of the house. >> luckily, in one was hurt. the driver was interviewed by police but he was not arrested.

happening now -- a group of homeless people and their advocates are camped out in albany after being told they are about to be evicted from a park. brian flores is live to tell us what the city plans to do about this. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, tori. we've been on the corer in of solano -- corner of solano. earlier, there were 25 people that camped out here. but that number has dwindled to half of that. many of them spent a brisk night on the sleep -- on the streets, sleeping in tents and sleeping bags. city officials say they will remove the homeless off the property in order to begin plans for the park there. but since last night, many of the group, save the bulb, have camped out here to show what it would look like. to also show support for the 60 people that live along the shoreline park. many say the bulb should stay

as is because the homeless have created a community there. as they are forced to leave, they will spill out on the streets. >> at a time when there's such a critical housing need. two to replace that with the recreational park is really poorly timed. >> this is ongoing -- an ongoing situation that we're trying to find caring and compassionate solutions for. >> reporter: the group says there's a pending lawsuit filed against the city to try to keep the bulb as is. the plaintiffs say the city has not done enough to provide affordable housing. the city continues to work with the homeless to help them including bringing in the nonprofit berkeley housing. they've established a website to show what the homeless policies are. the officials are hoping to turn the bulb into a thriving recreational area. back out here live, the project has also gotten support from the city as well as the sierra

club. many say they will be leaving this morning. none of them were arrested or detained from last night. we're live here in albany, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. affordable housing advocates are fighting plans for a mass eviction in san francisco. the san francisco examiner says as many as 300 people on market street are facing eviction because their units violate city code. the city says the units are illegal because the buildings are only zoned for commercial use and many units do not have windows. if tenants are forced to move, it would be one of the biggest evictions in san francisco since the 1970s. 7:37. later today, the oakland as will play the detroit tigers, game four of the a.l. series. the as won yesterday but look, sparks were flying on the field yesterday when the pitcher and victor martinez got in this argument. fred ingles is live in detroit this morning with more on that

order after getting a copy of an internal e-mail. the engineer said he was concerned that the pipeline could cause an explosion like the disastrous explosion in san bruno three years ago. there's a clear connection between the pipeline that blew up in san bruno and the pipeline causing concern in san carlos. the "chronicle" said it uncovered pg&e documents that show in both peninsula cities, pg&e relied on used pipe when they made repairs back in the 1950s. the company according to the report resorted to using old pipe because of steel shortages dated from world war ii. 7:41. if you drive through the caldecott tunnel, you will see something new later this morning. according to the mercury news, caltrans will turn on new traffic lights in the third bore around 10:30 this morning. they will stay green for the next ten days while crews test ten new traffic signals in the

into a second week with no signs of washington that it could end soon. no deal in sight to raise the debt ceiling which expires on october 17th. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is down 23. the nasdaq down 20 and the s&p is down 2 1/2. tesla's stock is down slightly right now. this morning. tesla appears to be on the ground after losing ground after a video of a model-s went up in flames and went viral. the stock target price is trading at $83. general motors is recalling a small number of the sonics because of a small fire risk. the cars are from the 2013 and

la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. a hayward police officer accused of extortion is scheduled to face a judge today. prosecutors say romeo aberin tried to turn a female forgery suspect into an informant, then demanded cash from her in exchange for not arresting her. aberin is a six-year police veteran. he resigned yesterday after turning himself in at the hayward police station. many students will walk to school today. it's part of walk to school walk around the bay area. hundreds of schools are taking part. now, tomorrow, the city of san francisco is expecting a record number of students to do this. back in april, mayor ed lee launched a campaign to improve safety around five schools every year. ten minutes before 8:00. how are things in traffic, sal?

a laptop computer with personal and medical information on thousands of uc san francisco patients, it was stolen last month from a hospital worker's locked car. the hospital is notifying patients whose names, birthdays, social security numbers are included in that stolen information. so far, there's no sign anyone has tried to use the information. uc san francisco could be fined hundreds of thousands of dollars for this newest security. the new parkway theater will show the as game on the movie screen as it did yesterday for about 85 people. this afternoon's crowd will likely be bigger with the possibility of the as moving onto the next round of the playoffs. the manager of the theater says capacity is 150.

hayward. not a lot of crashes in concord but very slow traffic from concord all the way down into danville and almost to san ramon. this is one of those power tuesdays. everyone is on the road. but surprisingly, let's go to the toll plaza of the bay bridge. that seems to be lighter than usual. so it's kind of a -- not making sense. but we'll take it if you are trying to get into san francisco. back to the desk. we begin with developing news from san francisco. police are busy investigating the suspicious death of a 7- month-old baby. ktvu's alex savidge has been on this since 4:30. you are in san francisco now and there are a lot of questions about this case. alex? >> reporter: good morning. police have secured a home on monterey boulevard just off 280 in san francisco. we understand the family of this baby who died early this morning lives in the downstairs unit here. i tried talking with the neighbors. no one was home to speak about

the family. but all morning long we've seen a squad car parked here in front of the home. here was the scene from earlier this morning as crime scene tape has gone up across the front entrance of this place after the suspicious death of a 7-month-old baby. police say the mother brought this child to san francisco general around 12:30 this morning. it's unclear exactly what was wrong. but the child was pronounced dead at the hospital. the medical examiner was called out not long after that and investigators determined the death of this child was, in fact, suspicious. now, police will only say this is a 7-month-old baby at this point. they are giving much more information than that. the cause of death remains unclear. we did see several detectives at the emergency room. we also saw this morning police towed away a white car from the hospital parking lot and i was told by investigators that car was related to this case. although it's unclear who exactly the car belongs to. homicide detectives have been interviewing the baby's mother,

also talking with other family members and trying to figure out how this 7-month-old baby died. live this morning in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. we have new information about an early-morning car fire near san francisco's twin peaks. firefighters say a car burst into flames around 4:30 this morning after rolling down a hillside on marview bay and fairview court. firefighters say two cars collided before one of them rolled down the hill. so far, that driver has not been found. 8:05. the firefighters battled a grass fire in felton in the santa cruz mountains early this morning. it started at 3:45 on lompico road. two acres of grass have burned. santa cruz county firefighters are also in aptos investigating a destructive fire that damaged two homes early today. it was first reported at 1:00 on redwood drive. no reports of injuries. the fire briefly forced the evacuation of the neighborhood.

so far, no word on what caused the fire. now to the threat of another b.a.r.t. strike. the clock is ticking toward the deadline which is now, as you can see, just over two and a half days away. but there's a major new development. negotiations resume in about 90 minutes. today's contract talks come after the most encouraging sign yet that the two sides may be moving closer to a deal. ktvu's tara moriarty is live at the richmond b.a.r.t. station to tell us about the new hope for a settlement. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. union leaders announced last night they will not be issuing a 72-hour strike notice and they've always done that in the past. a lot of people are thinking that perhaps this could mean that the two sides are closer to ironing out a deal. now, last night in oakland, both sides emerged very quietly from the building where they've been carrying on the negotiations. they are not saying much to the media because of a gag order issued by the mediator. experts say silence is usually

an indication a deal is closer. although a gag order earlier this summer didn't make a difference at the bargaining table didn't make a difference. we asked passengers what they thought about the union's announcement. >> right. but -- i don't know. bonta. he said it's not a cure for the violence but it will help to track plans. the bill is one of a dozen proposed gun laws now in the governor's office. a high school teacher in fremont has been arrested on suspicion of touching a student inappropriately. police say they arrested the 66- year-old union city man friday after following up on a report from a parent. the unidentified teacher was cited and then released. he's expected to be in court next month. a former uc davis chemist will stand trial on explosives and weapons charges. 32-year-old david snyder is accused of setting off an explosion at his apartment in january. that explosion injured him. it also forced dozens of people to evacuate. snyder is out on $2 million bail. he's expected to be arraigned next month. 8:09. a bay area law student is facing felony charges in connection with a hit-and-run crash in-- hit-and-run crash

in oakland. it happened near the main library on 14th street in downtown. police say 26-year-old megan zato confronted a group of graffiti taggers and tried to hit them with her car. witnesses say she hit 25-year- old james roda who was not part of the group. he was seriously injured. his friends have started a website to help pay for his medical bills. zato was arrested shortly after the crash. she's a student at hastings college of law in san francisco. expect more traffic on highway 101 after a new casino opens in rohnert park. the press democrat reports 40,000 more cars a day may clog highway 101 after the casino opens in november. some expect that could cause huge backups from the rhoneert park expressway all the way up to petaluma, 12 miles to the north. the casino officials disagree saying because the casino will be opened 24 hours, the traffic

a northern california surfer is speaking out this morning after a terrifying shark attack over the weekend. the 45-year-old, jay, was surfing in humboldt bay sunday afternoon with friends when he noticed something in the water next to him. he said he was paddling his board when all of a sudden, the shark came from under him and started to attack. that's when he fought back and went back to shore for safety. >> i remember swinging at the shark trying to punch it. i missed. the shark turned and swam away. >> many are concerned he would not get help in time because the beach is closed due to the government shutdown. last year another surfer was

i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. a lot to tell you about. the fog 0 -- the fog is working its way up to the north. clouds are increasing rapidly towards mendocino county. they will work their way into the north bay in the next couple of hours. 40s, 50s on the lows. mainly a lot of 40s and very low 50s. definitely cool this morning. that will translate into a cooler pattern. it's tough to see the fog to the south. but the clouds are already working into mendocino county. there's a little bit here. but what's happening, it's wrapping back around. san jose, you can see sunshine. south of that is where some of the low cloud deck is. it will be sunny, cooler, sunny, nice for a while. then a combination of low clouds to the south and high and mid-level clouds to the north will give us temperatures that will be cooler. society mainly 70s or 60s. here's sal. steve, we do have slow traffic all over the place. i want to start with good news if you are trying to get into san francisco. the commute into san francisco has really become much better.

right now, traffic continues to move along nicely on the bridge. there's that but there's slow traffic everywhere in the south bay and east bay. the san mateo bridge is very slow trying to get over to a crowded peninsula. just look at this accident map here in san jose. these are all fender-benders. not all of are -- not all of them are major accidents. a lot of fender-benders, slow traffic and a lot of frustration in the south bay commute. let's go back to the desk. once again, we're following breaking news. right now a fire is burning. we've learned it's at the padula lumberyard on monterey road in san jose. these, once again, are live pictures of newschopper2 flying oifer the scene -- over the scene. you can see some black smoke coming up through the clouds. it's a little hard to see down below those clouds and the fog to see exactly where the fire is burning. but you can see quite a bit of smoke coming up there. the fire is happening off highway 101 in southern san

jose near morgan hill. so far, there are no reports of any injuries or damage. at this point, we have no word on how the fire started. but obviously a fire at a lumberyard could be problematic. a lot of wood to burn there. janine de la vega is heading to the fire scene. stay with us for updates. we have new information about the asiana crash at sfo last summer. three people were killed in the crash. dozens more were hurt. ktvu's pam cook is in the newsroom to tell us what the pilots are saying now about that crash at sfo last summer. >> the investigation continues into exactly what went wrong. but the pilots have a different account than the ntsb. we're getting word that asiana airlines representatives are planning to visit the ntsb later this year. now, the agency is in charge of the investigation and is planning a public hearing in the next few months. this morning "the wall street journal" reports that the pilots have told federal

investigators have a problem with the speed control system was a major factory in the deadly accident. the pilots have repeatedly said that they remember engaging the auto throttle to maintain a safe speed but that it disconnected without warning before slowing down and hitting the sea wall. now, the ntsb's investigation has not uncovered any problem hour with the plane prior to impact. but again, the agency is planning a public hearing on the crash and the investigation early next year. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:34. we are also have new details from vallejo this morning about an early-morning shooting. police say a female clerk at the roadway inn on mariposa way was shot. her injuries are serious. she's expected to survive. police are still searching for the shooter and the investigation goes on. san jose police say a driver who crashed into an apartment complex this morning was asleep at the wheel.

it happened about 3:40 a.m. on camden avenue near hillsdale. the driver crashed into three parked cars. two poles and then slammed into the apartment complex. the truck also hit a gas meter but pg&e says the crash did not cause a gas leak. >> he looked a little tired. he said he had fallen asleep coming around the corner. i don't know. veered off the road and woke up in front of the house. >> luckily, no one was hurt. the driver was interviewed by police. but was not arrested. a group of homeless people and their advocates camped out overnight in albany after being told they are about to be evicted from a park. brian flores is live in albany to tell us what the city plans to do about it. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yeah. we're live here on solano avenue and san jose. behind me is a smaller group of people, homeless advocates, if you will, earlier there were 25

of them. many of them slept in tents or sleeping bags on the ground to show support for the homeless who live at the albany bulb. city officials say sometime this month, they will remove the people living at the bulb in order to begins plans to expand a park area there and also to enforce the no camping law. but this last name, many with save the bulb have camped out in front of the california bank and trust here in albany to show support for the 60 people that have taken up residence along the shore line park. many say the bulb should stay as is because they say it's a community there. >> at a time when there's such a critical housing need, to replace that with a recreation- only park is really poorly timed. >> this is an ongoing situation that we're trying to find caring and compassionate solutions for. >> now, there's also a pending lawsuit filed against the city

to try to keep the bulb as is. plaintiffs claim the city has not done enough to provide affordable housing. as for the city, they try to continue to work with the homeless to help them bring in the berkeley nonprofit housing project. the city has established a website to show what the homeless policies are within the city. overall, they are hoping to turn the bulb into a thriving area. now, it's also reported the project has gained support from the city as well as the citizens for east shore parks and the sierra group. as for the group behind me, they say they will be leeching this morning but do plan to have more events in the -- leaving this morning but do have plans to attend more events in the future. back to you. yesterday, a board of supervisors committee approved a plan that will move for a full vote later this month. if this plan is approved, all city parks would be offlimits

negotiations continue. this may be the most encouraging sign that they are getting close to a deal. late yesterday, b.a.r.t.'s union said they would not give a 72-hour strike notice for friday morning. also new this morning, house speaker john boehner says president obama called him this morning to say he will not negotiate on ending the government shutdown or raising the debt limit. boehner says he's willing to negotiate. we'll see what happens next. meantime, back here at home, san francisco police are investigating the suspicious death of a 7-month-old baby. ktvu's alex savidge has been on this since early this morning, joining us live from san francisco. you've been following this. what's the very latest, alex. >> reporter: well, i can tell you that the san francisco police have blocked off the home here on monterey boulevard in san francisco, just off 280. we do understand that the family of this baby lives in

the downstairs unit of the home. i want to show you here, all morning long, there continuing to be a -- there continues to be a squad car parked in front of the home. they are keeping this a secured scene. we've been talking to people who live in the home. we haven't been able to speak to anyone who knows this family. the crime scene tape was put up across the front entrance to the place after the suspicious death of a 7-month-old baby. police say the mother brought this child to san francisco general around 12:30 this morning. it's unclear what was wrong. but the child was flow nounsed dead at the -- pronounced dead at the hospital. the medical examiner was called out. the death is suspicious. police will only say it's a 7- month-old baby. they won't confirm whether it's a boy or a girl. the cause of death is unclear. we did see several detectives at at the emergency room. we saw them tow away a white car.

unclear how that's connected. we know that the detectives have been interviewing the mother of this investigation and other family members trying to figure out how this 7-month- old died. live in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. now, the agriculture department says raw chicken processed at three foster farms plants in central california are the likely source of a salmonella outbreak. 278 illnesses have been reported since last march. the outbreak has spread to 18 states but most are here in california. foster farms says the products are safe to eat if properly handled and fully cooked. >> those people with low immune systems or those people that actually have, you know, kids or the elderly and kids, they are particularly at risk. >> the affected packages contain usda marks that you see on the screen. foster farms released a statement saying in part we take food safety very seriously when the incidents of illnesses

linked to illness. we want to know why and work quickly to identify and implement additional control. if you are in the east bay and drive through the caldecott tunnel, you will see sog new late -- something new later this morning. caltrans will turn on new traffic lights in the third bore about 10:30. they will stay green for the next ten days while the crews test ten new traffic signals inside the tunnel. let's check in with sal. see what's happening on the roads. a lot of things going on. >> the south bay has been the focal point with a lot of slow traffic everywhere. we're gonna start, though, and take a look at 237 trying to get in there from milpitas. you will see slow traffic. it's getting better finally as some of these commutes have actually become a little better. also the morning commute is going to be a little bit improved here at the bay bridge toll plaza. i think you will like what you see there. southbound traffic is -- westbound traffic is moving
