>> the a's are in a must-win situation after a disappointing loss this afternoon in detroit. ktvu fred is traveling with the team and talking with some of the players. fred. >> reporter: it was a case of oakland's missed opportunity. the tigers perhaps showing their true colors and maybe one controversial call that did end the a's today. let's take a look here. especially in the 7th inning. bottom of the 7th. the a's led 4-3 when victor martinez delivers a big home run to tie the game. it was off to shawn doolittle but was it a home run. officials reviewed it and they said it was not fan interference. josh disagrees. we had more troubles in the bottle -- top of the 8th rather. a's put men on all three bases. it was loaded with a's. no one out. max, game one winner, came in
6:23 pm
relief. got all three batters out. josh sinking at ball four. that would have tied the game. afterwards, josh talked about his frustrations. >> a hundred percent. fans aren't even close to the ballpark and where they can affect the ball in play. it completely changes the game. it changed the momentum for them and us. we couldn't feed off of that. >> reporter: a lot of what-ifs in this situation. see that guy up there in the interview process? that is justin verlander. he will be pitching for the tigers for game 5 on thursday. a big job ahead for the a's, not something that they look forward to. reporting live in detroit, ktvu channel 2 news. >> mark is here with sports. you have verlander. fred was saying, you know, the a's aren't looking for that.
6:24 pm
but the tigers can't be looking forward to facing bartola. nevertheless, just one of those games that they will be shaking their heads at as they fly home back to oakland. kind of twisting and turning, not able to get a lot of sleep. there were, as fred said, so many opportunities for the a's to beat the tigers. oakland had built a 3-0 lead. it's cocoa crisp. red hot in the series. a's celebrating too soon. in the 7th, it is victor martinez. have another look at this. deep off of shawn doolittle and josh claims that he was interfered with. if you look at the replay, i don't think that he in all honesty was going to make that catch. umpires agreed. they look at it and rule it a home run, which tied it. the inning continues. two-outliner to right. this is the back breaker.
6:25 pm
austin jackson came in hitting .071. the broken bat single to right scores the go-ahead run. and the tigersed added three more to take an 8-4 lead in the top of the 9th. the a's never give in. a shot to center that scores a pair. they reduce the deficit to 8-6. that's the way it ended as seth smith struck out with one on base. the series is now 2h2. here is josh talking about being at the plate. >> nobody out. make sure that -- i missed some good pitches. swung at ball four. you can't help a guy like that out. we just didn't capitalize. the next guy on. it doesn't work out for him. >> all right. as he said there, he swung at ball four. that could have completely changed the complex of the

inning had he been able to draw a walk to tie the game. as it was, that's what baseball is all about. it didn't work out for the a's. but it has been an intriguing series to say the least. everybody is looking forward to game 5. in sports, it's the game 7 or the game 5, depending on the series that you look forward to. loser go home. >> they're probably not looking forward to coming back and playing game five but it's exciting for the fans to see them at home. >> the joint will be jumping. this is the way it came down last year. the tigers did win game 5 to send the a's home. they're obviously hoping to reverse the fortunes on thursday night. and they will move on against either boston or tampa bay. >> no one is dominating this series. maybe the key will be the fans on thursday. >> the a's pitching has been dominating. this was the first game where they were a little shaky. shawn doolittle had a bad inning and they weren't able to close it down. they had the lead a couple of
6:27 pm
times and we're used to the a's being able to hold on with the great bullpen. it didn't work out today. but the tigers were in the world series last year. they're a great team. there is a reason that they are this far along too. >> i hope things turn around on thursday. >> thursday, we will be determining the game time real soon. >> and we will be watching. >> thanks, mash. coming up on the 10:00 news, weeks without an unemployment check. we uncover a trail of complaints against the company responsible for a computer upgrade that went awry. have a good evening, everyone.
