toward another b.a.r.t. strike at midnight tomorrow night. progress is being made, though, as talks resume in two and a half hours. more on that coming up shortly. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's check weather, traffic. steve, take a sweater, jacket, maybe? maybe a light jacket. sierra nevada, widely scatters rain and/or showers. some of this cloud cover could wrap around us. partly sunny, partly cloudy. we have some low clouds as well. some of the low cloud deck. chilly, mild, the breeze picking up. a cooler and breezy pattern today. mainly 50s. very low. upper 40s. everyone is close. everybody is inching to get colder. but it probably won't be until friday morning until the wind dies down. most of this here is rain. snow will be around 6500 feet. we expect that to come down. last check it was raining at

tahoe and blue canyon. upper 30s. not cold enough yet. but there's some turning. watch how the cloud cover is heading back towards us. back by stockton and modesto, some of that is inching closer. cooler, air breezy. highs today 60s and 70s. here's sal. steve, we do have a lot of slow traffic out there as we hit the peak of the morning commute. let's go out and take a lookant the bay bridge toll plaza -- look at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's not been really severe. it's back backed up for a -- it's backed up for a ten-minute delay. some of the traffic has been busier on 80. also looking at the south bay, we had an earlier crash northbound 101 at alum rock. that crash is out of the lanes but traffic is still pretty slow in that area as you drive up into san jose. so we have another bad day on

highway 101. the central avenue offramp from 80 in el cerrito is still closed following a deadly crash. a minivan plunged off the freeway, down an embankment and landed on the ramp early this morning. ktvu reporter claudine wong is live at the scene with the latest on what's going on with this investigation. claudine? >> reporter: well, sal, investigators say they are getting close to wrapping up this investigation out here on the central avenue offramp. let me give you a look at what's happening now. you can see investigators standing on what is the side of that minivan. they are focused on a right front tire and what damage may have been caused by that tire or how that may have led to the accident. that's an important piece. we'll tell you why coming up in just a moment. i want to first direct your attention up the freeway. they just walked by. you have investigators up there. this is 880 where the accident happened more than six hours

ago. it was about 1:40 this morning, the chp says they were at a construction site along interstate 80, about a mile and a half up the road. there were two chp officers in two separate cars sitting there when they heard the minivan coming. they said they heard it coming because the right front tire was flat. they both tried to stop the vehicle. they said before they could do that, the van hit the center divide and went over the embankment and crashed there. it's still a mystery at this point why it all happened. >> we have no idea why that happened other than the right front tire is chewed up. we'll figure it was on the rim for a while but not sure why it veered to the left. >> reporter: firefighters responded to the scene, had to cut the top of the kia sedona van off. the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. the body was taken away just

after 4:00 this morning. if we come back out here live, you can see the final stages of this investigation. we're told about a half an hour ago, they thought it would be another hour and then they would be able too reopen this offramp. it's taking a while for them to make sure they have everything taken care of. no sign of a tow truck yet. at this point, it looks like they have a little ways to go. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:05. the countdown clock in the b.a.r.t. dispute is now in its final hours. you can see over an hour and a half left until the strike deadline which is 11:59 tomorrow night. pressure is on b.a.r.t. management and union leaders to work out a last-minute deal. the b.a.r.t. contract talks are set to resume in a couple of hours this morning. there are some signs of progress at the bargaining table. tara moriarty joins us live from the west oakland b.a.r.t. station. you've been talking to worried

b.a.r.t. passengers. what are they telling you? >> reporter: they are concerned. they've made alternate plans for friday just in case. but according to experts, the two sides have been making progress. they think they could strike a deal before then. now, as far as the strike goes, the unions have said that they don't want to strike. they say that they are not ruling one hout, however. but -- one out however. monday night they did say they would not issue a 72-hour strike notice. ktvu spoke to a gauche amounter to get in -- negotiator to get insight into this meditating process. he said typically there's shuffling back and forth to rooms and there's face-to-face meetings as well. the fact that there's no mudslinging shows progress is being made. >> i think they are doing very serious bargaining now just from my observation that they are not out talking to the public about their positions and defending their positions. i think the signs are that they are having serious discussions.

>> reporter: now, they are planning to give an update at the monthly meeting today. we'll keep you posted on what happens there and let you know if anything happens on the negotiating front. live from oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. many b.a.r.t. workers are taking a hard line in this labor dispute despite the apparent progress in the contract talks. [chanting] >> last night, 100 b.a.r.t. workers and their supporters marched down oakland's grand avenue. they are urging union leaders to continue to fight hard for better pay and benefits. the union workers are calling on the public to support them. the prospect of another strike has many worried and frustrated. >> it kind of worries you after a while after you decide, well, you know, carpool, drive in or whatever. it takes a toll on you. >> want to make sure they are

fairly compensated and i'm willing to take the ferry or do whatever i need to do. but at the same time, i would like them to move it along. >> recent poms show -- polls show b.a.r.t. riders are unhappy with both sides. blow. a -- san pablo. a witness said residents managed to escape because a neighbor screamed for everybody to get out. >> i can't go to sleep and i hear somebody banging on my door that there's a fire, that their apartment is on fire. >> the woman told her roommate what was happening and then smelled the smoke and saw the flames. so they ran out. so far, no injuries are reported and the investigation continues. new information on the latest shooting on an a.c. transit bus in oakland. conflicting reports about a teenaged passenger shot while riding a bus yesterday afternoon in east oakland. police said the 18-year-old high school student was shot in the leg by someone on the bus. however, an a.c. transit spokesman said the gunshot wound may have been self-inflicted. no one else on the bus was hurt. this was the second shooting -- bus shooting. police are still searching for the gunman who fired shots on an a.c. transit bus on international boulevard last week.

two people wounded are now recovering. police say the intended targets on the bus were not hit. san francisco police say passengers on a muni railcar are so focused on their mobile devices, they didn't realize someone had been shot. a 30-year-old has pleaded not guilty to killing san francisco state student justin valdez last month. prosecutors say they have muni surveillance video showing the suspect holding a gun. they say other passengers were so engrossed in texting and other things, they were oblivious to what was happening. the state public utilities commission has ordered pg&e to keep a gas line in san carlos out of service until the agency can determine whether it's safe. a judge initially ordered the utility to shut down the pipeline on saturday. they asked for the court order of a they learned an internal pg&e memo.

the engineer raised questions about the possibility of a san bruno type disaster and the safety of the 83-year-old pipeline. it was one year ago today when san francisco supervisors handed suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi his job back. the decision came at the end of a marathon meeting. the supervisors decided his bruising of his wife's arm during a heated argument was way out of line but it did not qualify as official misconduct. 7:11. three new target stores opening today in the bay area. one is in san francisco on geary boulevard at masonic avenue. another is in alameda at mariner square loop. the third one is in san rafael at the shoreline center. here's some video i wanted to show you. the new store opening this morning in san francisco. like the other target store that opened in san francisco, this one will be smaller.

about 15 minutes, a house hearing will focus on how the partial government shutdown is hurting veterans. in a separate news conference, senators are scheduled to talk about those same problems. kyla campbell is live in washington to explain the impact on services to veterans. >> reporter: tori, if the shutdown continues, the department for veterans affairs says nearly 4 million veterans won't get their disability checks for november. also g.i. bill payments and other benefits payments are supposed to go out to veterans november 1st but the v.a. is expecting delays and does not know for sure when it will run out of money. there's more motivation for lawmakers to end the government shutdown. president obama is now open to a short-term deal that would fund the government and raise the debt ceiling. house speaker john boehner says he wants negotiations first. there are dire warnings from tax payer watchdog groups if the u.s. defaults on payments

next week. >> we're talking about interest rates going up, unemployment going up. >> reporter: i will be working on more for 8:15. back to you. >> thank you. nearly two dozen people have been ticketed for entering grand canyon national park after the government shutdown closed it. the grand canyon's chief ranger says some people have been caught attempting rim-to-rim hikes or trying to sneak in through dirt roads. all of the 21 citations have a mandatory order to appear in federal court once the court opens and they will be handled by the u.s. attorney's office. people running the new california health insurance exchange says the response so far is incredible. covered california started last tuesday. more than 16,000 households applied for health insurance with 27,000 more creating

accounts or partially filling out applications. the state's three help centers received 59,000 phone calls. administrators say the wait times, which were more than 30 minutes on the first day, average 30 seconds on saturday. the employment section of the alameda county webb page will be filled with new jobs because of the affordable care act. the county wants to hire 185 workers to help low-income people enroll for free health coverage. county supervisors yesterday approved more than $8 million in funding for the new full- time jobs. 7:17. the man known as the naked b.a.r.t. acrobat may get out of jail today. perez was charged with false imprisonment and battery after allegedly harassing passengers at the 16th street b.a.r.t. station in san francisco back on may 10th. attorneys say a judge will likely release him today so he can get mental healthcare in

alameda county. he's apparently not eligible for treatment in san francisco because he said he had been living in berkeley. a petaluma man is due in court in just over an hour accused of causing a bomb scare in his neighborhood. on monday evening, police responded to reports with a man with a gun on quarry street. he's identified as 30-year-old ismail moylan. after he surrendered, police entered his home and found four explosive devices. they were safely detonated by the bomb squad. he's in jail on $1 million jail. mountain view police are saying the test run for their new tracking software was successful during a raid last month. the police department tested it during the beyond wonderland concert. mountain view based company polaris wireless created the app. they used it to track the movement ofmore than 20 -- of more than 20 officers.

officers made more than 100 arrests. bay area workers are urged to have a backup plan if there is a strike. other services are planning to expand their services. commuters don't have the option to work at home, you are being urged to carpool, ride a bus, train or ferry if possible. however, other transit agencies would only be able to handle a small percentage of b.a.r.t.'s 400,000 riders. many b.a.r.t. workers may be unhappy with their contract. but there are plenty of people who would love to take their jobs. today's "chronicle" reports that b.a.r.t.s more than 20,000 applications a -- b.a.r.t. gets more than 20,000 applications a year. so you have a better chance of getting into harvard than being hired by b.a.r.t. drivers and station agents make up to $63,000 a year. that's not including pension

67. a little bit more in the way of low clouds. san jose from 75 to 73. not a big deal. san francisco, though, dealing with a lot of low cloud deck. it really enhanced itself. 52. we'll go 60. a high of 66 should be sunny. as the low right there associated with everything now. you can see how that is rotating back in. even taking aim up towards lake county and parts of the north bay which has been mostly clear. there's a lot of low clouds. king t tweeted me and said 50 in morago and patchy clouds coming back in. snow level seems to be about 6500 feet. 1 to 5 inches of snow could fall out of that. some showers are trying to make it out of stockton and modesto. some of that could make it down towards monterey or the santa clara valley. i think we're too west. 39 tahoe. 47 ukiah. there are some 40s. napa airport has been the coldest by a mile. but a lot of low 50s. the wind is all over the place. this is the direction the wind is coming from onshore,

in others. on ray street, there seems to be some sort of activity there. it's causing a little bit of slow traffic. it's slow even beyond that getting into the valley. i want to show you a map view of the south bay. you can see 280 is actually a little bit worse today than 101. 85 and 280 are making most of that traffic. 880 is slow getting into fremont from as far back as hayward. on the livermore valley, we have slow traffic coming in until you get to the middle of livermore. let's get some live pictures in here. take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. i think we have that. this is northbound 280 gets up to highway 17. that traffic is good and the toll plaza has filled in a little bit. it was ten minutes, now it's more like 15, 20. 7:32. back to the desk. we're waiting for official word from san francisco general hospital on whether a woman's body found yesterday in a stairwell is that of a woman who disappeared from her

hospital room more than two weeks ago. ktvu's brian flores is live at san francisco general hospital now. you just found out a news conference is set for just a -- for in just a couple of hours. >> reporter: that's right. i just got an e-mail. there is a phone recording as well that talks about this joint press conference that's scheduled for 11:00 this morning. it will involve some people here at san francisco general as well as the san francisco county sheriff's department. in terms of the sheriff's department, they have a big task ahead. they are in charge of security, not only here at the hospital, but they are also trying to find out how the woman died. the county coroner has yet to officially confirm the identifity of the woman's body found yesterday. but sources close to the investigation, again, tell ktvu. it's of 57-year-old lynn spaulding. we can confirm a woman's body was found in what is described as a rarely used exterior stairwell yesterday morning. her body was taken by the cory

ner's office yesterday -- co -- coroner's office yesterday. spaulding went missing after she came here to be treated for a bladder infection. the family says this has been an emotional roller coaster for the family. >> there's a lot of questions, if that's the case, that san francisco general will have to answer, not only for the family and friends of spaulding but for the people who come here expecting safety. >> it's very concerning that this bolddy was found -- body was found. we're distressed. we don't know what happened. that's our top priority, to find out that. >> reporter: what remains unclear if there were security cameras around the stairwell where the body was found. around the time when spaulding went missing, friends canvassed the city handing out fliers looking for her. i checked the website for her. the family says they've not received any confirmation this was lynn but again we're checking more information at

this joint conference scheduled for 11:00 this morning here at san francisco general hospital. we're live here in san francisco, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. happening today -- a bail hearing is scheduled in 90 minutes in san francisco for a man suspected of online drug trafficking. 29-year-old ross olbrick is accused of running the secret underground website sill -- sill ook road -- silk road. the fbi arrested him last week. they say silk road brokered more than a billion dollars in illegal drug sales. yesterday, investigators announced the arrest of eight people in britain, sweden and washington state. 7:35. a.c. transit still trying to work out a new deal with its workers. now the board of directors says the next move, it's up to the union. the board says it's made a solid contract offer and the heads of the union recommend improving it. however, workers rejected it. the offer included a 9.5% raise

over three years. and a flat rate for health insurance. this is the second time in three months workers rejected an offer recommended by their union. new this morning, for the second time in three days, a stanford university professor won a noebl prize. the a -- nobel prize. the announcement came a few hours ago. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us from stanford where she talked to the medical researcher about his life's work and that overnight phone call. worming, janine. >> reporter: -- good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning. michael levitt has been up since 2:00 a.m. that's when he received a phone call from sweden. the person on the other line informed him that he had just won the nobel prize for chemistry. >> i think i -- it was like a real adrenaline. my pulse shot up. it's still up. >> reporter: levitt fielded

phone calls all morning long from the media regarding his work in chemistry and how it led scientists to use computers to unveil the chemical molecules. levitt was awarded and two others the nobel prize for the work. they did that work in the 1970s which it calls groundbreaking. it's helped scientists research drugs and how they react. after levitt found out he won, he hugged his wife, he's been married to for the past 45 years. >> i'm feeling -- i think michael deserve it. really, he's such a modest person. he's an amazing scientist. he's really passionate about science. >> reporter: while, levgit is being honor -- levitt is being honored, he's a physicalcy

recent violence at napa state general. three years ago, a psychiatric technician was killed on the hospital grounds and since then, there have been several violent incidents. today's public hearing is at 1:00 p.m. at the little theater at napa valley college. the group working hard to try to save and preserve berkeley's downtown post office is pretty angry. the historic building now is being listed as being for sale on a real estate website. earlier this month, the postal service said the city has until the middle of next month to comment on any negative effects that selling the building would have on preserving it. a postal service spokesman said no sale will be completed until the historic value is considered. 7:39. it's do or die time for the oakland as tomorrow evening at the coliseum. >> a fly ball. to right field.

seen punching and kicking the suv before leavings scene. they say he was undercover and he was off duty at the time. he's now the sixth person to be arrested in this case. investigators say the motorcycle rider surrounded that suv, dragged the driver out and beat him up after his suv allegedly ran over some of the riders. 7:47. we're now learning more about the salmonella outbreak traced back to foster farms chicken at three facilities in the central valley. the centers for disease control says 42% of the 278 people who became sick were hospitalized. the cdc says many strains of salmonella linked to the outbreak appear to be drug- resistant. it says it was slow to discover how big the outbreak was because a national network that looks for food-borne illnesses is closed due to the government shutdown. we've posted the three codes to look out for on the packets of

plaza. we've seen quite a bit of improvement as you drive into the toll plaza area. there are no major problems but the traffic has been a little bit slow on 80 westbound coming down the eastshore freeway. now, a tow truck is on the scene at the central avenue offramp from westbound interstate 80 in el cerrito which has been closed following a deadly crash. a minivan went down an embankment landing on the roof -- landing on the ramp, landing on its side. pardon me. ktvu channel 2 reporter claudine wong has been out there since 4:30. what's been happening in the last few minutes. >> a lot of activity. the -- >> reporter: a lot of activity. i can show you behind me what's happening right now. you can see the minivan at the base of that tow truck. they are getting ready to pull it on there and then get it out of the way to get the ramp reopened. as we go up the embankment, you can see some workers there trying to repair the guardrail

that the minivan crashed into when this came over that embankment and down on this ramp. let's take you through what happened this morning. it all started about 1:30. the chp says they had two officers in two separate cars parked at a construction site about a mile and a half up. they heard this minivan before they saw it because they said the right front tire was flat. so they heard it coming. it wasn't speeding but they both pulled out to try to make contact with the driver to find of figure out what was going on. they say moments later, the minivan hit the center divide and then veered back over the lanes of traffic and flipped over and went down the embankment. the chp officers say they all watched it happen and it happened very quickly. >> i'm not sure if they had lights on yet. they theard the vehicle. they were gonna try to make a stop on it. but this happened a few seconds after they were behind the vehicle. >> reporter: so they didn't have time to start pursuing? >> no, not really.

they put out a little information over the radio. and then it was like hit the center divide and went off the shoulder. >> reporter: they called in firefighters who had to cut the top of the roof of the minivan off to try to get to the driver inside. the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. the chp is not releasing any information about the victim. in the meantime, though, this ramp has been closed. so the major accident investigation team could do their work. as we come back out here live, you see the minivan being pulled up. if you look at the top of that minivan, you can see the extensive damage to it. again, at this point, we do not know really why this happened. all we know is that this van was driving down the road pretty much on the room on its -- rim on its right front styer. that -- front tire. that caused it to lose control. it looks like they are in the

final stages. they will get that up on the tow truck. get it out of here and then this offyomp will be back -- offramp will be back open to traffic. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. the countdown clock is ticking toward another possible b.a.r.t. strike. the coolingoff period ends at 11:59 tomorrow night. we've got just over a day and a half left. pressure is on. b.a.r.t. management and union leaders to work out a last-minute deal. the talks are scheduled to resume in 90 minutes. there are some signs of progress at the bargaining table. ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live from the west oakland b.a.r.t. station and you've been talking to some worried passengers. >> reporter: that's right. the potential for the strike is there. these riders are concerned. i don't think that anybody that we talked to the last strike enjoyed uses the bus shuttles. the home is for the -- heap is for the two sides to -- hope is for the two sides to come

together. the union said they would not issue their 72-hour strike notice. some see that as a good sign. ktvu spoke to a negotiator to gain insight into the bargaining process. he said typically mediators shuttle back and frgt between floors and -- forth between floors and there's face-to-face meeting. >> it could mean they are trying to set aside some of the personal animosity. at this point, it takes both, the face-to-face and the shuttle diplomacy for the meditators to go back and forth. >> reporter: now, they are planning to give the members an update today at the monthly meeting. we'll keep you posted on that. and we'll let you know if we hear anything from either side, b.a.r.t. b.a.r.t. or -- b.a.r.t. or the union. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. despite the apparent pro

b.a.r.t. antioch police investigating a deadly shooting last night. it happened around 8:00 on lopez drive near mission elementary school. the unidentified victim, a 27- year-old man. the investigation continues. flames woke up some berkeley residents early this morning. an apartment at carrison and san pablo caught fire, forcing residents to run for their lives. now, it started around midnight. one witness says residents escape because a neighbor screamed for everybody to get out. so far, no injuries reported. but the investigation continues. 8:09. there's new information on the latest shooting on an a.c. transit bus in oakland. there are new conflicting reports about a teenaged passenger who suffered a gunshot wound while riding a bus in east oakland yesterday afternoon. police said the 18-year-old high school student was shot in the leg by someone on the bus. but an a.c. transit spokesman now says the gunshot wound may have been

self-inflicted. no one else on the bus was hurt. it was the -- this was the second bus shooting in oakland in the past eight days. police are still looking for the gunman who opened fire on an a.c. transit bus traveling on international boulevard last week. two people are wounded. they are recovering from their injuries. police say the intended targets on the bus were not hit. meanwhile, in another shooting incident, san francisco police say passengers aboard a muni railcar were so focused on their mobile devices, they didn't realize someone had been shot. 30-year-old kaptasen has pleaded not guilty to killing justin valdez last month. prosecutors say they have muni swid surveillance video that proves this. the state public utilities commission ordered pg&e to keep a gas pipeline in san carlos

out of service until that pipeline is deemed safe. a judge initially order ordered the shutdown on sunday. san carlos city leaders asked for the court order after they learned of a memo. the e-mail raised questions about the possibility of a san bruno type disaster and also the safety of that 83-year-old pipe. it is 8:11. right now -- rate now, some bay area schools are participating in some of the international walk-to-school day. more than 12,000 elementary school students and 76 public schools are expected to join in. that's a 38% increase from last year and includes schools in san francisco, san jose, santa clara and marin county. parents are encouraged to join in and walk or ride their bikes along with their children. >> that's right. 8:11. we talked about this earlier. but there's a new development in a grim discovery that

congress is examining how long the shutdown is aaffecting -- is affecting military veterans. the testimony is well underway. there will be testimony by the secretary of veterans affairs as well as military vets including disabled veterans and those who actually fought in iraq and afghanistan. again, we'll keep an eye on this hearing -- happening now in washington. well, the pressure on congress and lawmakers coming from various groups trying to get them to reach a deal on this government shutdown. kyla campbell is live in washington now with the fallout from all of this. kyla? >> reporter: dave, if the

shutdown continues into next week, more than five million veterans will miss out on benefits payments come november 1st. we're taking a live look at that veterans affair hearing where the secretary says nearly 4 million veterans won't get their disability checks for next month. another million plus won't get g.i. bill payments and ear payments due out november 1st. the v.a. unexpectedly furloughed 7,000 workers. half of whom are veterans. some lawmakers question that move saying the v.a. is almost fully funded months in advance. but the v.a. says the furlough is necessary. >> it's the v.a.'s ability -- impediment that they have the ability to pay the services earned. >> reporter: president obama is open to a short-term deal that would fund a government and raise the debt ceiling for four to six weeks.

but house speaker john boehner wants negotiate spending cuts first. live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. the head of starbucks thinks the political gridlock will end. howard schultz wants customers of his to set a good example. he's offering a free tall cup of coffee to anyone who buys a beverage for someone else. shultz says that helps people support and connect with each other. he thinks a small act of generosity will go a long way. 8:17. a second team of more than a hundred weapons exarts is expected -- experts is expected to arrive in syria. this will expand on the work of the original team who arrived october 1st. both teams will form a joint operation to identify, sequester and oversee the demolition of syria's approximately 1,000-tun arsenal of chemical weapons. that operation is expected to

take eight months. the u.s. will slash hundreds of millions of dollars in military and financial aid to egypt. the white house is considering such a move since the egyptian military ousted that country's first democratically-elected leader back in june. the u.s. provides egypt with a billion and a half dollars in aid. money going to the interim government would be suspended. and in another development this morning, an egyptian court announced that mohamed morsi will stand trial on november 4th on charges of inciting deaths of opponents during a riot. the man with the police chief in santa rosa is stepping down. he led the department through a time of financial uncertainty and divisiveliness in the ranks. he has no immediate plans for his retirement. and money to hire new police officers will instead go to street paving in vallejo.

the vallejo times herald reports the hiring of new officers is behind schedule. and the city council unanimously approved a plan to shift $2.5 million from hiring officers to rode repair and other projects. the police chief says diverting the funds will not hurt his hiring process. 8:18. bay area commuters you are being advised have a backup plan just in case there's a b.a.r.t. strike friday morning. other bay area transit agencies are getting ready to expand service if there's a strike. commuters who don't have the option to work from home, you are being advised to use casual carpools. consider riding a bus, train, or ferry if that's possible. this labor dispute will cost b.a.r.t. about $250,000 a day starting friday, strike or no strike. that's because b.a.r.t. has made a nonrefundable deposit for buses. many b.a.r.t. union workers may not like their current contract. but there are a lot of people

who would love to take their jobs. b.a.r.t. getting more than 20,000 job applications a year to fill just 177 job openings according to the chronicle. so according to that, you have a better chance of getting into harvard than getting hired by b.a.r.t. drivers and the station agents make unto 63,000 a year -- up to 63,000 a year and that doesn't include pension and healthcare benefits. we're hope -- i think everyone is hoping there won't be a strike. but in case there is, sal castanedo is our traffic guru and you, of course, will be all over it as will ktvu just in case. >> we did it last time. we're hoping that it's not gonna happen. we will be ready just in case we'll have expanded updates. we'll be all over the ferries and the tiffs in -- alternatives in case that happens. the bay bridge toll plaza, this is the spot where if there is a strike it will be bad here. this morning it's light.

for snow. there have been a few reports for us. a lot of low clouds. it's a cooler forecast. we've seen temperatures starting to drop on monday and then more so on wednesday. they will continue and stay here. 60s and low 70s. had a few 40s and the napa airport gone nutty. 41. there's a ten-degree spread between them and everybody else. only a few 40s and a lot of 50s. they are all near 50, 51. you can see how it is close. some of the cloud cover wrapping bag -- back. some scattered snowshowers but it has made it to lake level, the keys, bridgeport and heavenly reporting snow. breezy, low clouds. generally, cooler, breezy. partly to mostly sunny. here's sal. the south bay is a mess still. it's becoming a pattern, unfortunately, northbound 280 is still slow out of downtown san jose. kind of late for this to be happening. pardon me. and this is all because of an earlier crash northbound 280

two weeks ago. ktvu's brian flores is at san francisco general right now. >> reporter: this is an active investigation being lead by the -- led by the san francisco sheriff's department. not only security at the hospital, but they are also in charge of trying to figure out how this woman died. the coroner has yet to fully identify the body found yesterday along the stairwell here at san francisco general hospital. but sources close to the investigation tell ktvu that it is a 57-year-old -- that it is 57-year-old lynn spaulding. the woman's body was found in a rarely-used exterior stairwell. her body was taken by the coroner's office yesterday afternoon. more than two weeks ago, the hospital reported she meant missing after coming here to be treated for a bladder infection. her family says this has been

an emotional roller coaster for the family. >> someone has died in a mysterious fashion here at san francisco general, an institution known for healing. tonight, i'm sure the staff of sf general is horrified and confused. >> reporter: now, what remains unclear is whether there's security cameras around the stairwell around the time when spaulding went missing. family was handing out fliers looking for her. the family has a facebook page dedicated to finding her. there's questions for sf general to answer this morning. some of them include what are the protocols for a hospital when searching for a missing patient, how many searches place and whether there were any cameras recording at the time. hopefully we can answer the questions during a press conference at 11:00 this morning. we're live in san francisco, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:34. happening today, a bail hearing is scheduled in half an hour in

san francisco for a man suspected of running a massive drug trafficking website. some call it the ebay for drugs. 29-year-old ross olebrick is accused of running silk road. he was arrested at a san francisco public library last week. agents say silk road brokered more than a billion dollars in illegal drug sales. yesterday, investigators announced the arrests of eight people in britain, sweden and washington state. an internationally renowned scientist from sanford did not get much sleep last night. his phone would not ing after he was awarded the nobel prize in chemistry. janine de la vega is live inspect south bay where we talked to him about his groundbreaking research. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. we're here in front of professor michael levitt's home. he's been awake since 2:00 a.m. that's when he received a phone call from sweden with the exciting news. now, this is video that we're showing you that we took of

levitt earlier this morning. he was fielding phone calls from the media answering questions about his work that's being called groundbreaking. the royal swedish academy of scientists awarded him and two others the nobel prize in chemistry for work they did in the 1970s. it laid the foundation for computer programs to simulate and predict chemical processes. it's helped scientists research drugs and how they react with protein in the body. >> it's nice to see this work recognized right now. this is an acknowledgement that computers are an important part of biology. biology has been an experimental see usiance. i think it -- science. i think this is the -- it's a chemistry prize. it's for biological molecules. >> reporter: we asked levitt how he was going to celebrate. he said he was not sure. the 66-year-old has been teaching at stanford since

1987. the university will be holding a news conference to discuss the honor at 10:00 a.m. this is the second proker -- professor here to receive the nobel prize this week. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. and winning the nobel prize does not mean you are immune from the government shutdown. coming up at 8:45, what happened to a recent winner who studied at uc berkeley. and at noon today -- president obama is expected to nominate janet yellen to become the chair of the u.s. federal reserve. she's currently the fed's vice chair and the wall street journal study shows she was the most accurate of 14 fed policymakers in her forecast through last year. yellen was a uc berkeley professor and she served as the president of the federal reserve of san francisco. the senate must confirm her nomination. ben bernanke is stepping down as fed chair at the end of january. 8:37. we're finding out more about the salmonella outbreak linked

to foster charms chicken at three facilities. the cdc says 42% of the 278 people who became sick were hospitalized. many strains of salmonella linked to the outbreak appear to be drug resistant. the cdc was slow to figure out the extent of the outbreak because some of their investigators have been furloughed because of the government shutdown. now, on our channel 2 website, ktvu.com, we've posted the three usda codes to look out for on foster farms chicken. you can find it at ktvu.com on our home page. look under hot topics. now, the centers for disease control says two-thirds of their staff was furloughed. they couldn't work. but this morning we found out because of this latest salmonella outbreak, they are recalling 30 employees. they can do that under the rules of the shutdown. in santa clara county, officials want people to have more information about

between a 15-year-old girl and a boy. he accuses the girl of resisting and continuing to fight. the girl, who is now wearing a neck brace, says her neck has been injured and excessive force was used. oakland police say a wrong- way driver is responsible for a traffic mess near jack london square last night. investigators say the driver somehow took a wrong turn right toward the train tracks near the oakland amtrak station. trains were stopped for more than an hour while two tow trucks struggled to remove the car. that delayed -- that caused delays for both train passengers and drivers in the area. president obama is backing apple over samsung. apple won a patent lawsuit against samsung and the electronics company is now banned from importing several of its older model smart phones. the president could have overturned the ban. samsung says it is disappointed
