quarter to 6:00 this morning. the good news, the trains are running today. no strike going on right now. but there's still no deal. what this means for commuters going forward. that's coming up in a live report. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning, everybody. i'm brian flores. dave clark has the morning off. let's get your tuesday started with weather and traffic. steve paulson, it will be warm? >> warm coast, bay inland. this will be the day to head to the beaches. it looks really good. temperatures upper 70s, low to mid-80s. not too bad on the lows. anywhere from 30s to mid- to upper 50s for others. if you get the offshore breeze. i saw 57 in the sunset district and also daly city about two minutes ago. there's definitely an offshore breeze which means everybody will be in the upper 70s to low 80s. 57 san francisco. redwood city, 47. same for concord. santa rosa, started off at 38.

they were 38 last hour. they will warm up. it's tough to dress for this. by this afternoon, it will be sunny, warm. we'll go for a high of 83. 32 in reno. 29 in tahoe. 37 in lakeport. there's cold readings to the north. a little component of an offshore breeze. sunshine, coast, bay, inland. temperatures if you are in the mid-50s, it won't take long to warm up. we'll have a lot of upper 70s and some low to mid-80s. here's sal. good morning. because the trains are running, as you've probably already found out, in case you are just joining us, the trains are running, so the traffic, as i'm gonna show you here, is not as bad as it would have been. you can see traffic is backed up at the bay bridge toll plaza. but it's going to be normal on this commute. same thing for interstate 880. you can see carses are out there -- cars are out there. southbound 880 traffic looks good. it gets busier in hayward.

we've had a tough time on 580 coming off the alma montpass. 680 heading south towards fremont is slow. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. we're following breaking news on the b.a.r.t. labor dispute. if you're just waking up, b.a.r.t. trains are running today even though no deal has been reached. about 90 minutes ago, a federal mediator gave us an update saying both sides will continue negotiations. ktvu's tarm starts our live team coverage -- tara moriarty starts our live team coverage this morning at caltrans where negotiates are expected to continue this afternoon. good morning, tara. >> reporter: i just got a text from someone from the union who indicated they are hopeful. that's the first time that i've heard those words uttered from somebody from the union's side. that's good news. around 5:30, we started to see people trickle out with their suit cases. we were hoping there was a deal

but we were told people needed to get some rest, take a break and go home. we noticed that antoinette bryant, we saw her walk out in a seemingly good mood. she's usually talkative but did not talk because of a gag order. the fact that no one is talking is a good indicator that the two sides are getting close. >> at the mediator's request, we'll be taking a recess until early this afternoon. that's all i'm gonna have to say. negotiations are continuing. we'll be back at this this afternoon. >> reporter: at 10:00, there was a counteroffer presented in response to b.a.r.t.'s best and final. we've heard from insiders that the two sides are locking heads on the key issue which is pay. at this point, still no contract. but the good news, there's no strike for today. tomorrow could be a different story. but again, the two sides expected to reconvene at 1:00

this afternoon here at caltrans headquarters. live from oakland, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> many b.a.r.t. commuters are making backup plans in case a strike is called. alex savidge is tracking the ferry option live from the oakland ferry terminal this morning. alex, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. with the threat of a strike, a lot of people probably made plans to take the ferry from the east bay into san francisco today and it could be that some of those people would stick with the backup plan and still take the ferry, even though the b.a.r.t. trains are still running. we're here at the oakland terminal at jack london square. i want to show you the scween about a half -- scene about a half-hour ago. that particular boat didn't seem that crowded. we'll have to wait to see whether more people continue to show up. during the last b.a.r.t. strike in july, the ferry was a popular option for commuters who lined up early at the

oakland terminals. we know because there's no b.a.r.t. strike, ferries will be operating on a normal schedule today. if a strike happens, there's a plan in place, more ferries will be put into service, they would be running more frequently and there would be direct service from oakland and alameda into san francisco. a little while ago, i talked with one regular b.a.r.t. rider catching a ferry. she told me she was expecting to wake up to a strike. >> i wake up early, anyway, but i would rather know ahead of time. but having to stay up until midnight to see if there's a strike is not fun. >> reporter: commuters are growing frustrated in this labor dispute and having to keep track whether the trains will be cupping. that woman told me she may end up taking the ferry here for the next couple of days until things settle out and this labor dispute is settled. there's regular ferry riders who said they are glad that the

b.a.r.t. strike did not happen simply because the last time there was a strike, there were huge crowds. long lines to get on the ferries. they are glad they don't have to deal with that today. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. b.a.r.t. had been planning to offer limited bus service between the east bay and san francisco. about 200 charter buses would have been offered if there was a strike. that's about double the number is hired during -- it hired during the july strike. they can only accommodate 600 passengers a day. the returned trips will be between 3:00 and 7:00 p.m. there are also alternatives in the works for east bay commuters not going to san francisco. county connection which serves central contra costa county plans to offer alternatives if there is another b.a.r.t. strike. the agency will run a small number of buses between concord

and 20th street and broadway in oakland. a small number of buses may run between the dublin pleasanton b.a.r.t. station and an east bay transit hub that has yet to be announced. if you need to go somewhere, go to ktvu.com first. you will find information on buses, ferries and carpools on the front page. new this morning, the family of a woman found dead in the stairwell of a san francisco hospital is speaking out. 57-year-old lynn spaulding disappeared from hur hospital room at -- her hospital room at san francisco general. she was found 17 days later. officials have not yet said how she died but they have ruled out fall play. the family now wants the hospital to update the public and they issued this statement that says -- we look forward to the independent review by ucsf and, again, thank you mayor lee for calling for it. let's get to work. let's get answers. let's make sure this never happens again. we learned one victim has died in a triple shooting in

san francisco. homicide detectives are investigating last night's shooting on rose street near buchanan. police say someone drove by or walked up to three young men and shot them around 7:30. one victim is said to be a teenager. no word on any suspects in the case. and at about the same time as that shooting in san francisco, two teenagers were shot in oakland, it happened at 7:20 last night on 61st avenue near east 16th. initial reports indicate the victims are a boy and a girl, 14 or 15 years old. they are expected to survive. there were reports of a third victim but that person has not been found. police in san francisco say someone made off with more than a million dollars worth of goods from the fairmont hotel. the alleged theft happened on october 6th at karisma crafts a high end shop in the hotel. someone filled a u-haul with carpets, jewelry and furniture.

a recently fired employee is a person of interest in the case. the person has claimed all of the merchandise is his. several small earthquakes hit the berkeley area overnight. the usgs records the largest trembler at 3.2. it hit at 1.7 centered between serkry and orin -- berkeley and orinda. several people called. people from daly city and pleasanton said they felt it as well. there were several aftershocks including a 2.7 and 2.6. no damage, though, reported. a major earthquake has now killed 93 people in the philippines. this is the aftermath. the quake is estimated at a 7.2. buildings collapsed, sending people running into open areas. many people are staying in the streets fearing it is unsafe to head inside. many people are without power and this is making rescue

happening today -- an alleged member of the al qaeda is scheduled to appear in a courthouse in new york. he's accused of taking part in the 1998 bombings of the u.s. embassies in kenya and tanzania. he was captured recently in libya and was interrogated on a u.s. warship. some want him sent to the u.s. prison in guantanamo bay, cuba instead. the nsa has collected millions of contact lists from personal e-mails and instant messaging accounts around the world including those of americans. that's according to "the washington post" which said it learned about the effort from secret documents provided by edward snowden. reportedly, the nsa intercepts thousands of e-mail address books every day from private accounts on yahoo!, g-mail, hot

mail. 7:14, the u.s. supreme court is scheduled to hear arguments in an affirmative action case that could impact california. the case before the justices is a challenge to michigan's voter approved ban on the consideration of race and gender in college admissions. 17 years ago, california voters passed proposition 209. it also bans affirmative action and college admissions. a decision is expected before the court's term ends next june. happening right now -- i want to show you some live pictures as veterans groups are holding a rally. this is at the world war ii memorial in washington, d.c. this morning. and they are calling for an end to the government shutdown. they want to publicize the impact the should is having on -- the shutdown is having with concerns about delayed veterans payments. 33 veterans groups are reportedly taking part in the rally this morning. and there's developing news

this hour, the house now says it is putting together its own plan to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling. this comes as the senate is finalizing a deal to do the same. kyla campbell is in our washington, d.c. newsroom to explain the differences and when the votes could happen. >> reporter: the associated press says the house plans to vote today. we're taking a live look where house republicans are about to give a statement. we know that two major points of the house plan mirror those in the senate plan. it would fund the government through mid-january and raise the debt ceiling into early february. house republicans also plan to delay the medical device tax for two years. that revenue is slalted to fund -- slated to fund obamacare. it would eliminate healthcare surbsdies -- subsidies for the president, vice president, and cabinet members. they got to back to work and reid said senators will meet in

automated emergency notification system. the fire department used it to get word out about the charity pancake breakfast. some say it was used but the chief says the message was concern because of concern of flooding the emergency dispatch center since the event featured a rescue simulation uses the jaws of life. we're learning that george bush's recent heart problems were more serious than thought. one of the former president's coronary arteries was more than 95% block. reportedly it was found during a routine physical exam in august. the next day at his doctor's recommendation, president bush agreed to have a stent to open the message. the head of a luxury fashionhouse will be joining apple's team. the scurnt ceo of burberry, starting next thing, will start

a fire at a barn in a rural part of san jose is under investigation. the fire department tweeted this photo of the damage. the fire started around 10:45 last night on amado avenue and

monterey road. firefighters say tara ame co furniture -- amigo furniture restoration owns the building. no one was hurt. two people in the shooting of alashay caradine are due in court. police say joseph carroll shot because of retaliation. darnell williams is accused of actually firing the shots that killed the little girl and injured three others. a family is sacramento is counting their blessings after their car was stolen with their 5-year-old son inside. it happened around 5:00 when the child's mother went to daycare to pick up her other child. she left the other son inside with the child left inside and

the doors locked. when she got out, he jumped in. >> the car was found in a parking lot nearby. the boy was able to escape without any injury. the suspect has not been found. 7:25. new this morning, a construction company has been awarded a multi-million dollar dollar for the central subway project in san francisco. lane christenson announced that it has been contracted to build the foundation for three underground subway stations. the two-year contract is worth about $57 million. the central subway is scheduled to open in 2019. muni is looking to reduce crowding on the five fulton line in san francisco. the transportation agency is looking to launch a pilot program that would result in more frequent service between the temporary transbay terminal and 6th avenue. that's the routes most crowded.

did you notice that? >> yes. >> clear skies, temperatures on the coast, already 50s and 60s. inland temperatures, especially mendocino,lake county in the 30s. some of these are 30s. it will be sunny for everybody. high pressure aloft and a little component of a northerly breeze. 70s and 80s. coast, bay, inland. everybody will be close. 55 in san francisco. 50 san jose. but there's 40s not far away. concord is 47. redwood city, 48. patrick shear. we'll go 83 for a high. once things get going, it won't take long to warm up. the days are et going shorter. this is about as warm as we'll get without an offshore breeze. 29 in utah. 35 in ukiah. lower 30s. clear skies, top to bottom here. so a warm day on tap on the menu here. sunny for everybody and really nice to mild. warm conditions by the beaches

today. it will be beach weather. 70s and 80s and a lot of low 80s. even for some. right now, traffic is busy. it's getting busier in the south bay. as a matter of fact, we're looking at traffic getting up to highway 17. it's pretty slow here. i just wondered if there was a crash. i got my answer as i looked at the chp. there was a minor crash reported northbound 280 in this general vicinity at ray street. it's not a major crash. but slow traffic in the area. also looking at the east bay here and traffic getting south from hayward to fremont is getting thicker. it looks like the morning commute is definitely normal for a tuesday. could be a loot worse if the trains were not running. the trains are running. 580 southbound, very slow coming into livermore and dublin. if you look at the commute through oakland, it's just moderately heavy. talk about the bay bridge toll plaza, all of a sudden, it's become busier. i've been looking at the chp, i don't see a crash there.

usually when we see it coming up, there could be something on the bridge. we'll check that out for you and have it next time. back to the desk. at the mediator's request, we'll be taking a recess until early this afternoon. and that's all i'm gonna have to say at this moment. negotiations are continuing. >> if you are just joining us this morning, b.a.r.t. trains are running today. no deal has been reached. late last night, both sides continued to negotiate past the deadline. many b.a.r.t. riders say not knowing day to day exactly how they will get to work is stressful. janine de la vega has been getting an earful from b.a.r.t. riders. i assume a lot of them are stressed out. >> reporter: yes. definitely. i've been hearing preposterous, appalling and frustrated. as you can imagine, there's a lot of stress being felt here

at the fremont b.a.r.t. station. i've been monitoring social media. here's one tweet from rob stone. he tweets "what about the sleep i'm losing until after 12:00 a.m. or getting up at 4:00 a.m. to see if there's a strike get back to the table." that was a message talking about going to bed not knowing whether there was a strike. there's another one from isabella lowe "definitely tired of it. ridiculous. transit employees should not be allowed to strike." she mentions governor brown to make sure he sees the message. b.a.r.t. says they've been getting comments thanking them there's no strike. some feel they are being held hostage by b.a.r.t. and the unions. they are concerned how they are going to get to work if there is a strike. >> my car is broke down right now, so i have to get up at 4:00 in the morning to leave my house to get all the way to fremont until i get my car

fixed. so every day, i'm like oh, god are they gonna go on strike? how am i gonna get from castro valley to fremont? it's really stressful. >> i'm worried if it doesn't go through. it's kind of two and a half hours to -- you know, from here to my office and coming back two and a half hours. i work eight hours. >> reporter: and if a.c. transit strikes? >> yes, that's another problem. so i can't take the bus. >> reporter: as you heard from that gentlemen, that is a legitimate worry if b.a.r.t. and a.c. transit workers strike, you will hear more about a.c. transit in a little bit but as far as b.a.r.t. goes, riders say they are still hopeful since the two sides are still talking. reporting live from fremont, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we'll have to wait and see. thank you, janine. the ongoing strike threat could be impacting numbers. fewer people took part on

columbus day than a year ago. ridership was at 84,000 than last year. last year it was 208,000. that's a different of about 23,000 riders. the numbers are from 4:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. 7:35. even though there's no b.a.r.t. strike, you can still expect to see more law enforcement on the roads today. the chp is anticipating heavier traffic and says all available officers will be working to keep things moving. if there had been a strike, the chp had been planning to extend carpool lane hours from 5:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m. since there's no strike today, carpool lanes will be normal. >> it could be more congested than what we saw in july because of the holiday, people weren't commuting. they were taking the week off. >> during the last b.a.r.t. strike in july, the chp issued 123 carpool violations in san francisco. that's double the monthly

average. >> and while b.a.r.t. continues the negotiations, a.c. transit transit workers have issued their own 72-hour strike notice. ktvu channel 2 reporter katie utehs is live in hayward with more on how this could impact bay area commuters come thursday morning. >> reporter: good morning. the seemingly unbroken record that's the b.a.r.t. strike talks has overshadowed a.c. transit. but they are undergoing the same type of negotiations if the workers decide to strike, it will strand around 180,000 daily riders. so definitely an impact for commuters. members of atu local 192 have turned down two offers from a.c. transit management. it's important to note also this is a different branch of atu than the ones that the b.a.r.t. members are covered under. the latest offer from a.c. transit includes just over 3% in raises for each of three years and medical costs could rise for workers as much as

$280 a month. now, people who rely on a.c. transit say they are empathetic with the drivers but the ongoing stress of an uncertain commute is wearing on people. >> they are tired of b.a.r.t. if a.c. transit goes on, i know just as many people rely on a.c. transit as b.a.r.t. >> reporter: well, the a.c. transit numbers are slightly less than b.a.r.t. many, many people do rely on it here in the east bay. the 72-hour notice given by atu would put a strike deadline at thursday. a.c. transit officials told us last night there were viewing options. we have a call in the agency to see if they are willing to negotiate. a.c. transit decided to work last july because of the strike with b.a.r.t. it's unclear if they will do the same thing this time around. many people going to bed at night not knowing if b.a.r.t.

will be running with you there is hear also the -- but there's also the threat looming of a a.c. transit strike. katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. for the latest on the b.a.r.t. and a.c. transit negotiations you can always go to our website at ktvu.com. new this morning, east bay m.u.d. is trying to pig out what caused a -- figure out what caused a water main to flood a neighborhood. neighbors noticed water coming up from seven hills road near lake chabot road. when crews arrived, they shut off the water. luckily, no homes were flooded. the city of fremont may install surveillance cameras to curb cameras. police are asking the city council to put up cameras on what they call low to mid rit- income areas. their request comes after complaints in a rise in home burglaries. the cameras would be placed to

help this. an arrest has been made in connection with a deadly shooting in san francisco's mission district early yesterday morning. investigators have arrested 56- year-old vincent jakobo. the shooting happened on b.a.r.t.let and -- bartlett. the victim is 28-year-old maurice white of san francisco. no word on a motive for the shooting. san francisco's district attorney and others are speaking out against a proposed new jail. the san francisco examiner reports the city may soon look to get up to $80 million from the state to help pay for a new jail next to the hall of justice. the $300 million facility would replace the existing jail. d.a. george gascon said the money would be better spent on programs that help reduce the number of inmates. and tonight, the pinole city council will debate whether plans for a proposed

cell phone tower should move forward. the city agreed to lease a section of land to verizon. some neighbors are against the plan. the state says pinole would violate terms of a grant if the land is used for anything but recreation. verizon is threatening to sue if the deal does not go through. 20 minutes before 8:00. the search for answers. what the family of a woman found dead in a san francisco hospital stairwell is asking for this morning. the investigation begins after one man was killed at a stadium construction site this morning. we hear from friends and the 49ers. good morning. highway 4 is still busy, especially if you drive from pittsburg to concord. we'll tell you more about this morning's commute. it's already sunny. i just heard from bob out towards danville. 49 to 63. north wind kicked in. it's not going to take long to warm up for some if that breeze begins to show itself.

macy's says customers want to shop with family members after their turkey day dinners. toys 'r' us, target and kmart opened on the evening of thanksgiving last year. u.s. airways and american airlines have given up on their bid to find out why the federal government is blocking their merger. the two airlines wanted the justice department to explain why it approved four earlier airline mergers but opposed theirs. the airlines believe the government is holding them to different standards but they say they are still confident they will win approval to become one airline. speaking of airlines, passengers may notice a tighter squeeze. that's because the major airlines are taking out old bulky seats and replacing them with slim line models. they take up less space, weigh less and allow airlines to put in five or six extra seats on

strike. the bad news, no contract. we do want to mention that something i hadn't heard before was -- from some of my sources say they say they were hopeful. that's something you really haven't heard from the union side. so we'll take that as a good sign. at 5:45 this morning, we did notice that union leader antoinette bryant walked out. she was in a good immediate. she was usually -- mood. she was usual -- she's usually talkative but was not this morning because of a gag order. >> at the mediator's request, we'll be taking a recess until early this afternoon and that's all i'm gonna have to say at this moment. negotiations are continuing. and we will be back at it early this afternoon. >> reporter: at 10:00 last night, the unions presented their counteroffer. that was in response to b.a.r.t.'s best and final offer they gave sunday. we've heard from insiders that the two sides are still sort of locking heads on this key issue which is pay. at this stage, no contract but the good news, no strike.

tomorrow could be a different story, however. we'll keep you posted. we do know that they are expected to reconvene at the caltrans headquarters building at 1:00 this afternoon. live from oakland, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. taking a ferry is one of the backup plans many riders have in the event of a strike. alex savidge has been talking to ferry riders since early this morning. he's live at the oakland terminal. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. because there's no b.a.r.t. strike today. the ferries, i should let everyone know, are operating on a normal schedule. a lot of commuters have made plans to take the ferry into san francisco this morning in case they woke up and the trains weren't running. that was not the case. the b.a.r.t. strike will not happen today. but this was the scene early this morning as people boarded ferries here at the oakland terminal headed to the terminal. the ferry was a popular option with commuters.

many lined up early at the oakland terminal and the lines were long throughout mean of those -- throughout many of the mornings. when b.a.r.t. was out of service, it forced about 200,000 commuters to find other ways to get around. people carpooled took b.a.r.t. shut hl buses and also packed ferries -- shuttle buses and also packed ferries. regular ferry riders say that last strike was a nightmare. are you glad you don't have to deal with that -- >> oh, yeah. the first thing i do is wake up and see if b.a.r.t. is running. very happy it's still running. >> reporter: lines were overwhelming. >> oh, yeah. crazy. like way down there. >> reporter: if a strike happens at some point in the near future, every available ferry would be put into service. there would be direct service from oakland to san francisco's ferry building. from alameda's main street terminal. and the ferries would run more often, every 45 minutes. but again, at least for today, because there's no b.a.r.t. strike, the ferries running on

a normal schedule. but many growing frustrating with the uncertainty of the situation having to wake up every morning and figure out whether those b.a.r.t. trains will be running. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:05. and b.a.r.t. had been planning to offer limited bus service between the east bay and san francisco. about 200 charter buses would have been offered if there was a strike. that's about double the number it hired during the july strike. the buses can only accommodate 6,000 passengers a day. if there's another strike, buses will pick up people at nine different b.a.r.t. stations between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. they will drop riders off in san francisco at the transbay terminal. return trips will be between from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. there's also alternatives for east bay commuters. county connection, for example, which serves central, contra costa county plans to offer alternatives if there's another b.a.r.t. strike. the agency will run a small

police in san francisco are investigating more than a million dollars worth of goods stolen from the fairmont motel. the alleged theft happened on october 6th at charisma crafts, a shop in the hotel. someone filled a u-haul with $1.2 million worth of jewelry, carpets and furniture made in india. now, this appears to be a business dispute. the alleged thief is a former shop worker who told the san francisco examiner the merchandise is his. well, san francisco police are also looking for suspects in a triple shooting that killed one person. homicide detectives are investigating last night eight shooting on row street near buchanan. police say someone drove by or walked up to three young men and shot them around 7:30. one victim is said to be a teenager. no word on any suspects in the case. at about the same time as the shooting in san francisco, two teenagers were shot in oakland. it happened at 7:20 last night

on 61st avenue near east 16th. initial reports indicate the victims are a boy and a girl, 14 or 15 years old. and they are expected to survive. there were reports of a third victim but that person has not been found. several small earthquakes hit the berkeley area overnight. the usgs records the largest trembler as a magnitude 3.2. it hit at 1:07 this morning. it was centered between berkeley and orinda. several people called our newsroom to report feeling the quake. people from daly city and pleasanton also told the usgs website they felt it. there were several aftershocks including a 2.7 and 2.6. no damage, though, was reported. however, in the philippines, a major earthquake has now killed 93 people. this is the aftermath of a quake estimated at 7.2. buildings collapsed and many people are staying in the street fearing it is unsafe to head inside. many areas are without power and and a rot -- a lot of

up in a live report. i'm brian flores. dave clark is off tonight. steve it's gonna be a beautiful day. >> very nice. it looks nice to warm. temperatures won't have any problem warming up. 30s, 40s, 50s to 64 at the half moon bay airport here. you get a little north breeze. kind of cold for some. it will be sunny and warm for all. temperatures starting off all over the map. but ending up in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. everyone will be pretty close. upper 70s low 80s. maybe a few mid-80s. >> we have a had a -- we've had a problem in the east bay right now. 580/24. it was an injury crash but the injuries weren't as severe as the backup. the backup is just terrible. it took a while to get these things out of the way. that's why traffic is slow. we'll get to that soon. i want to talk about the san mateo bridge, though. we've noticed this bridge is getting busier by the minute, getting over to foster city. i want to mention that if you are driving nearby on

interstate 880, it's slowing down. southbound on the way to fremont. bay bridge on the other hand looks pretty good. i think a lot of people are stuck behind that crash on 580. more people are using 880. let's talk about that now. this is a look at 580 and the crash is right -- i'm gonna put the cursor right there. 580 is very slow. 880 will be slow as you drive up into downtown oakland. 580 is backed up out of san leandro. if this is your commute, give yourself extra time. back to the desk. at the mediator's request, we'll be taking a recess until early this afternoon and that's all i'm gonna say. >> b.a.r.t. trains are running. many b.a.r.t. riders say not knowing from day

to day how they will get to work is stressful. ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega has been getting an earful from b.a.r.t. riders at the fremont station this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. many riders are saying they feel like it's ridiculous that talks have been taking so long. a lot of them stayed up late trying to watch the news to see if there would be a strike. and then had to wake up this morning to get an update to what was happening. we've been monitoring social media. on twitter, shelby tweeted "i'm so sick of the entire b.a.r.t. shenanigans. will they strike or not? get on with it and stop dragging." another tweet, "no matter who wins, us transit riders are the real losers in all of this." b.a.r.t. riders say they've been getting a lot of comments from riders. some of them are thanking them they didn't strike yesterday or

today. others are upset criticizing them. some say it feels like they are being held hostage by b.a.r.t. around the union and are concerned about how they are gonna get to work if there is a strike. >> it's a little stressful. not -- not everyone can work from home. it's not something you can take on a daily basis. the whole news about a.c. transit coming for a strike, it's looming all over the bay area transit commuters. it's pretty frustrating. >> i think both are being selfish and greedy. they need to come to terms and work things out. i think it's drawing on way, way too long. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. riders are still hopeful since the two sides are still gauche saying but it does seem from talking to people as if patience is running thin. commuters want an agreement between the two and they want all of this to end. reporting live from fremont, janine de la vega, ktvu channel

2 news. meantime, the ongoing strike threat could be impacting passenger numbers. fewer people took b.a.r.t. on the columbus day holiday than a year ago. b.a.r.t. says its ridership was at 184,000 by yesterday afternoon. now on columbus day last year, it was around 208,000. that's a difference of about 23,000 riders. the numbers are from 4:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. 8:33. well, even though there's no b.a.r.t. strike you can expect to see more law enforcement on the roads. the chp is anticipating heavier traffic and says all available officers will be working to keep things moving. if there had been a strike, the chp had been planning to extend carpool lane hours for the full day, from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. but since there's no strike today, carpool lanes will operate at their normal hours. and while b.a.r.t. continues its negotiation, a.c. transit workers have issued

their own 72-hour strike notice. katie utehs is live in hayward with more on how this could impact bay area commuters come thursday morning. good morning, katie. bay area commuters are tired of hearing the word strike whether it comes from b.a.r.t. or a.c. transit. a steady stream of buses has dropped off commuters this morning and while a.c. transit doesn't haul as many people as b.a.r.t., it is still integral to the bay area commute, moving around 180,000 passengers daily. members of atu local 192, which is different from b.a.r.t.'s union, have turned down two offers from a.c. transit management. the latest offer, includes just over 3% in raises for each of three years. the medical costs could rise as much as $280 a month and union representatives say they still have safety concerns. some commuters are empathetic with the union's cause. others say it's time. >> i can't blame them.

they've been telling me they haven't gotten a raise in ten years. they are due. >> no different than b.a.r.t. they are government work as far as i'm concerned. shouldn't be allowed to strike anyway. do the same thing what his name -- reagan did with the air traffic controllers. fire them and get new ones. >> reporter: the 72-hour notice given by atu would put a strike deadline at thursday. it would impact the thursday morning commute. a.c. transit officials told us last night, they are revee you options. we -- reviewing options. during a.c. transit's last strike threat, they decided to keep working because of the b.a.r.t. strike in july. their negotiations have been ongoing just as b.a.r.t.'s have, but it's unclear if the transit agency will make the same offer again this time around. a strike could happen come thursday. live in hayward, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. for the latest on the

b.a.r.t. and a.c. transit negotiations, you can always go to our website, ktvu.com. new this morning, east bay m.u.d. is trying to figure out what caused a water main to burst flooding a castro valley neighborhood. neighbors noticed water coming up from beneath the street on 7 hills road at 5:00 a.m. when east bay m.u.d. arrived, they shut off the water, the water was gushing a lot below ground which sparked concern about possible sinkholes. no homes were fladded. an arrest has been made in connection with a deadly shooting in the mission district yesterday morning. we brought you this developing story yesterday. investigators say they've arrested 56-year-old vincent jokobo the shooting happened on bartlett and 21st streets at 4:00 a.m. the victim, ma ease white of san francisco -- maurice white of san francisco. still no word of a motive. there's controversy surrounding the palo alto fire

department's use of an automated emergency notification system. the fire department used it to get the word out about its charity pancake breakfast. and some say the department misused the system but the fire chief disagrees. he says the message was sent out because of concern that people might flood the emergency dispatch center since the event features a helicopter and a rescue stimulation using the laws of life. the city of fremont may install surveillance cameras to curb crime. the paper reports the city is being asked to put up cameras on what they are calling low to mid rit-income areas. this comes after a rise in home burglaries. the cameras would be placed on fremont street lights and public buildings. tiburon, vallejo and oakland have similar measures in splice. no word on -- place. no word on when they would go up if approved. coming up -- a big decision

california state prisoners. governor jerry brown had hoped to yore turn a -- overturn a lower court decision ordering california to release nearly 10,000 inmates before they finished their sentences but the high court dismissed the appeal. that means california must release the inmates by the end of the year. also new this morning, a construction company has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract for the central subway project in san francisco. lane christianson announced it's been contracted. the contract is worth about $57 million. the central subway is scheduled to open by 2019. 8:47. that central subway will help traffic. we'll check in with sal and see what's happening in oakland. quite a mess there. >> it's a mess. that's because of an earlier crash. our newschopper2 is over the part of oakland that's a mess. this would be 580. and the reason it's that way is because of an earlier crash. we actually took a look at it.

new information surrounding an accident in pleasanton that seriously injured a husband and wife. it happened at a crosswalk on santa rita road and francisco street saturday evening. police say the flashing yellow light that's supposed to be at that crosswalk may have been removed. the couple was hit by a car when they were leaving a nearby shopping center. they were rushed to eden medical center. the crash is under investigation. we're now hearing that former president bush's heart problems were far more serious than previously thought. according to a report in the national journal, one of the former president's coronary arteries was more than 95% blocked. reportedly, the blocked artery was found during a routine

physical exam. the next day at his doctor's recommendation, former president bush agreed to have a stent placed to open the blockage. the cupertino city council is scheduled to hold an initial vote today on plans for apple's new headquarters. the plans call for apple's new campus to be 80% open space surrounding a space ship-like round building in the center. apple says the circular design will encourage collaboration. the campus will eventually be home to 7,000 fruit, oak and olive trees. a final vote expected next month. ge anyone tick says it will create more than 200 biotech jobs here in the bay area. the south san francisco company plans to expand its manufacturing facility in vacaville as well as southern california. it's part of a larger plan by genentic's swiss tear rant to increase the -- tearant to
