traffic. steve? >> everything is clear right now. sunny and warm. it will be cooler tomorrow. some fog will start to turn to the coast as a weak system brushes us. by the weekend, it looks like we're back to a hint of a northerly breeze. this is beginning to form fog off the coast. 37 santa rosa to 57 san francisco. so 20-degree spread. most locations in the 40s or very low 50s. not much of a breeze. there is a slight offshore component. we'll go 80. it's already 59 in some areas. 37 in ukiah. 33 in clearlake. 28 in tahoe. sunshine and warm temperatures win out and then cooler from the system coming in tomorrow. a lot of sunshine. beach weather for maybe one more day. a lot of temperatures upper 70s or very low 80s. here's sal. good morning, steve. we're looking at the commute. it's the peak of the morning commute. it's not all that bad. i want to show you the bay bridge. we haven't noticed a spike in

bridge traffic. it's normal. backed up for a 15, 20-minute delay. less if you are using some of the fast-track lanes. much less if you are in the carpool lane. southbound 101 we've developed a problem at the south end of the city near cesar chavez. and the problem is -- it's a crash, but it's on the northbound side. however, southbound traffic is slowing to take a look at this. you know how the freeway is there. it's going to be affecting traffic. i do see police cars trying to get through this area here. we'll keep an eye on it for you. if you are driving in san jose, the busiest traffic is on 85 and 101. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. happening today -- once again, there is no b.a.r.t. strike. but there's still no deal. trains are running this morning following another marathon negotiation session that ended early this morning with no agreement. ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live from oakland where negotiations will start again in a few hours.

a lot of people are hoping -- you have to think they have to be close. >> reporter: yeah. we hope they are. i think everybody hopes they are. b.a.r.t. riders, reporters, people that are in the unions, everybody wants this over. at 12:30, they decided to get some rest. they will be back at it again in three hours. they've been trying for months to ink out a deal at the caltrans building. since monday, the general manager has spearheaded b.a.r.t.'s negotiations because thomas hock left town for another engagement. and people are saying this has helped talks progress. during the 10:00 news last night, the federal mediator came out to make an announcement. >> support of the public interest and -- >> in support of the public interest, there will be train service operating all day tomorrow. >> reporter: sunday b.a.r.t. management came up with a $57

million proposal. it called tbl the best and i -- it called it the best and final. everyone will be back here again in three hours. there's no b.a.r.t. strike, at least for now. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara we're learning more about why b.a.r.t. workers have decided not to strike this week. today's "chronicle" reports the b.a.r.t. unions slowly backed away from the deadline early yesterday morning. that's because they reportedly made the decision after concluding that b.a.r.t. management was in the going to bend in a so-called final contract offer. they were also reportedly worried that unions risked being on. receiving end of an angry public backlash if there was a repeat of the july walkout. >> stus for continuing coverage on b.a.r.t. and a.c. transit developments -- stay with us for continuing coverage on b.a.r.t. and a.c. transit developments. we'll bring you developments on

twitter and ktvu.com. frightening moments for a pleasant hill family whose house caught on fire. small explosions were seen from their cars as the flames spread to their driveway. janine de la vega is live in pleasant hill to describe what happened and how the ferry is doing this morning. janine? >> reporter: brian, the family is safe. they were able to escape but here you could see a lot of the damage that was left behind. starting with two cars parked out front. this mercedes and land rover. they went up in flames. and then if you take a look, they were parked there right in front of the house here. the garage also went up in flames. those were the explosions heard shortly after 1:30 on dove court in pleasant hill when the house caught fire. flames were shooting in the air. a father, mother and their young daughter were sleeping inside. they smelled smoke. the husband went to investigate and found the fire from the garage -- in the garage. the family ran outside and were

unharmed. firefighters arrived and knocked down the flames in a half an hour. during the flames, explosions went off. >> the explosions were caused by the exposures of the vehicles driveways. the tires made it sound like explosions to nearby bystanders. >> reporter: firefighters say the fire caused power lines to come down and sparks were scene. there is a broken gas main on the side of the house. pg&e responded. the gas and electricity are off at the house. while the brunt of the house is the garage and attic, the main house is unlivable because of the house and smoke damage inside. firefighters are still investigating a cause. back out here live, i want to show you to the left of the house there, there is a fence. but it's completely burned down. on the other side is an apartment complex. firefighters were standing on the other side of it guarding

that apartment complex. but you can see a lot of this devastating damage out in front of the house, a big pile of debris. that's actually insulation that firefighters pulled out of the house that was highly flammable. there was concern that it was going to sphark back up. but firefighters have left at this point. the family, we're told, is getting help from the red cross as far as shelter goes. reporting live from pleasant hill, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. new information in the hospital death of lynne spalding. the investigation surrounding her death at sf general has led to new safety precautions. the "chronicle" reports stairwell alarms at the hospital must be manually turned off once they go off. it's believed she entered a door that may have shut off the alarm automatically. patient disappearances from sf general, it turns out, are common. 96 people have left the

hospital without telling it staff since january. that's according to the examiner. the office of statewide health and developing says 38,000 california hospital patients left early or without telling staff. but sf general says spalding's case is unprecedented. a san jose father is desperately searching for his missing girl. 16-year-old madeline dorsech and her 13-year-old sister emily disappeared thursday night after a church service at delmar high school. their family has started a took page and passed out fliers with volunteers. >> i don't know where they are. i don't know who they are with. and i just -- i want them home. i want them safe. >> he says the girls have never run away or goon missing before. search -- gone missing before. searchers are checking shopping centers and transit stations. the girls' mother has come in

from pismo beach to help. we're learning about a disturbing new health threat tied to a salmonella outbreak. it traced -- this was traced to foster farm and it causing concern. the outbreak is sickened 300 people. many of those people live here in california. the city of fremont is set to revisit a controversial program next year. fremont police operate one surveillance camera on central but the department wants to use federal grant money to expand the program to 20 cameras. privacy advocates are worried about the department is saying maintaining privacy is a priority. apple executives are, static about -- ecstatic about last night's vote approving the company's plans to build a new

megaplex headquarters. tim cook tweeted our home for innovation and creativity for decades to come. cupertino city council gives unanimous approval for apple's new campus. there's plans to build a 60- foot high circular building. it looks like a space ship. the complex will sit right along 280. the new headquarters could cause more than 13,000 employees and it fulfills the dream of the late steve jobs. there's still one final council vote set for next month. 7:11. coming up -- terrifying moments in the air for dozens of passengers. >> the plane started shaking haven'tly and then it started to -- violently and then it started to fill up with smoke. hurried negotiations are underway on defaulting.

good morning. there's a crash in san francisco on southbound 101 as you head down to the cesar chavez exit. chp is reporting it's southbound one near 28 -- 101 near 280. they reported a minor crash northbound 101. some people say both of them are southbound. chp says there's one northbound as well. we're getting conflicting details. there could be more than one crash. but the main one, southbound

101 near 28 blocking -- 280 blocking several lanes. that one is making a mess out of traffic. alternate route, 280 to get out of this mess. we're get reeg actions from passengers on a frightening flight from dallas to atlanta. and engine on a spirit airlines jet burst into flames minutes after take-off prompting an emergency landing. >> the plane started to shake violently. after that, the plane started to fill up with smoke. >> all of the vents on the side of the aircraft was pouring smoke. before you knew it, you couldn't see. and that's when everyone got scared. >> you are looking at video shot by a passenger. it appears to be smoky inside the cabin after the incident yesterday. the smokesperson with spirit confirmed there was smoke in the cabin. the plane was able to return to dallas. no reported injuries.

7:15. in dallas, jury deliberations are expected to begin in the insider trading trial of mark cuban. the securities and exchange commission accuses cuban of using inside information to dump millions of dollars worth of stock. the case concerns cuban's actions in 2004 regarding a canadian internet search engine. the company's ceo had told cuban about a pending stock deal. happening now -- wall street doesn't seem too fazed about a possible drop in america's credit rating. you can see the dow is up 170. the nasdaq up 39. and the s&p up 19, all up over 1%. stocks are rising mainly because several companies -- several companies are reporting higher earnings and traders are hoping for a last-minute deal to avoid a default. the fitch credit rating agency has put the u.s. on a negative watch rating. fitch expects the u.s. to raise the debt ceiling before

tomorrow night's deadline. however, analysts say the political tug-of-war is endangering america's highest- ranked aaa rating. we're howles from the -- we're just hours away from the u.s. reaching the borrowing limit. kyla campbell is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom to explain the details of the deal and what the house is expected to do. >> reporter: the senate plan to fund the government until january. it would require both the house and senate to provide detailed outlines for a ten-year budget plan by mid-december. the senate deal would strengthen income verification for people who want subsidies to help them pay for obamacare. analysts say the pressure is on house speaker john boehner. he's expected to hold a vote if the senate passes its plan. >> we don't have a lot of time. what i'm suggesting to the congressional leaders is let's not doing any posturing, let's

nearby. an event is planned today to inform the public about next's bike sharing program. back in august, the city added 350 bikes and a dozen bike sharing stations downtown. now there are plans to expand the program to other neighborhoods. the informational meeting takes place at the -- ta -- takes place at 5:15. let's go to sal. what's going on with 101? >> southbound, still slow as you leave san francisco and head south. there have -- there's been more than one crash. but the main one was southbound 101 at 280. there are a couple of other crashes that were minor. it could have been in the

backup there. but the main one is still blocking lanes. you can see traffic is at a standstill recommending that you don't use 101. the only problem, you are going to start to see a backup on the skyway westbound and also a backup on the bay bridge. why? because the skyway comes off the bay bridge. if the bridge starts to crowd, they will -- starts to get crowded, they will -- these things have a chain-reaction effect. b.a.r.t. is running today, you might want to consider using b.a.r.t. or using the san mateo bridge if you have to drive. let's go to the santa cruz mountains. traffic a little bit slow here and there. but for the most part in the main south bay, northbound 280, 101 and 85 are slowing down in the usual spots. nothing major. northbound 101 right near 280 in san jose there's a minor crash there. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal and it's a pretty picture here. clear skies, a little bit of fog off the coast. the key word is off.

it will maybe late tonight tomorrow. courtesy of this system moving into the northern part of the state. it doesn't have much to work with. there's fog forming off the coast. i think eventually that will play into our weather tonight and tomorrow. today, sunnyside up. temperatures starting off cold, cool or mild will end up near 80 for almost everyone, including san jose. downtown 81. although there's a lot of mid- 40s not far away. 46 in blossom hill. the system is on the way. there's fog again. it just needs some oomph. you can some of it forming. there's still an offshore component in golden gate park. it's going to hold things in check, the wind. novato, 39. half moon bay and el granada wed were upper 50s to 60. you lose the breeze, they are 46. concord had 48. as you can see there's not much of a breeze. there is an east breeze at fairfield. that's an offshore direction.

south and concord. north at napa, offshore for santa rosa, i mean. the westerly breeze has no chance. calm across the board. it's trying at sfo. but by tonight and tomorrow, i think we'll start to see a cooler pattern. today, if you didn't make it to the beach, today would be a good day to do that. temperatures will be mild to warm. inland temperatures will be in the upper 70s to near 80. everyone is close on the forecasted temperatures. i do my own forecasted temperatures. 70s and low 80s. sonoma 81. nova toy -- novato, 81. fairfield, 81. same for pittsburg and brentwood. 82 danville, san ramon. walnut creek, 82 and 81 for san jose. 88 santa cruz but this will be the last day for that. gilroy, 86. low 80s, cupertino in there. santa clara, also woodside, redwood city, palo alto, atherton, menlo park. 70s on the coast. would not be surprised if a wind kicked in. cooler, patchy low clouds.

oreos are as addictive as cocaine, at least for rats. that's according to researchers at connecticut college. they found rats are like humans. they start with the creamy center of the oreo. the purpose of the stuty to look at the -- study to look at the potential of addiction when it comes to high fat and high- sugar fidz. a first of its kind school is about to open in san francisco. it's aimed at helping teens kick their drug habit while tat the same time getting their education. the substance abuse program is called sf act. it's sponsored in spart by the county court system. teenagers on probation can take a combination of regular classes and outpatient treatment. the program will be more intense for young people. >> it will provide family support and substance abuse support and anger replacement therapy support. >> the program launches on october 21st. organizers say they expect

it doesn't seem like anyone was seriously injured. however, the traffic is just terrible, as you can see for yourself. in case you are not looking, it's backed up onto the skyway. this will start to affect the bay bridge wend as people come off the bridge. you will see slow traffic so that means traffic will stack up on the bridge and it will mean slower traffic at the toll plaza as they will turn those metering lights on to slower. now we're getting a big backup at the toll plaza getting into san francisco. it just takes one event and here you are with a bunch of slow traffic. looking at the commute on the santa cruz mountains and getting into san jose. northbound 101 there's a minor crash in san jose. 101 itself has not been that bad getting into sunnyvale. it's beginning to slow down as you approach de la cruz and the lawrence expressway. let's go back to the desk. all right, sal. thank you. happening today -- there's no b.a.r.t. strike, at least for today. trains are running this morning following another marathon negotiation session. contract talks between management and union leaders

ended around 12:30 this morning. the two sides are scheduled to meet again at 10:00 a.m. last night a federal mediator announceled the trains would keep running while the talks continue. the mediator, george co en, did not say -- george cohen, did not say much -- much else. >> we're interested in achieving an agreement. i will not be taking any questions. i thank you. good evening. >> there's no word on the progress on the contract talks due to a gag order. many bay area commuters are already giving up riding b.a.r.t., pockably due to the re-- possibly due to the recent strike drama. 23,000 people fewer people rode b.a.r.t. from to tuesday morning. we spoke to frustrated commuters. they are still riding b.a.r.t. despite the recent string of

strike deadlines. >> my work starts at 7:30. just figuring out if i need to drive to work or not. i'm not sure. surprise, surprise. >> i'm tired getting up early and going on b.a.r.t. i went to sleep and woke up at 4:00 and turned on the news to see if it was running today. >> tara moriarty will have a live update at 8:00. it's not just b.a.r.t. trains, but a.c. transit buses could start running soon. ktvu's claudine wong, live in oakland with how the governor could step in and put off the latest strike threat. >> reporter: good morning. the governor stepped in with b.a.r.t. and a.c. transit asking them to do the same with their labor dispute. we're at 14th and broadway. if you take a look behind me, we've had a constant flow of a.c. transit buses since before dawn this morning. that's how commuters like to see it. but they know that the situation with a.c. transit is also tenuous with drivers possibly, possibly,

facing the -- the scenario of walking off the job at midnight tonight. it is expected. we should say the governor will step in. although his office will only say that they are reviewing the request hand delivered yesterday morning to his office in sacramento. there is an impasse between a.c. transit management and the union. unlike b.a.r.t., there are no negotiations happening right now. in fact, it's still unclear what issues exactly need on worked -- need to be worked out. unionship has gone tries to management. we asked exactly what's going on. is there frustration among members? >> yes, i think so. there's some frustration, you know, not knowing is it gonna be done or not? >> reporter: how do they know -- >> it's not right. >> reporter: if workers strike, life would be anything but simple for commuters. when you talk about a possible

during the newscast as well as on twitter, facebook and, of course, on ktvu.com. 7:36. it's a story you will see only on 2. some county workers in oakland say they've become the targets of repeated car break- ins. county health department workers on telegraph contacted ktvu about a rash of car burglaries. they say most parking spaces in the area have a two-hour limit so workers park on telegraph to avoid getting a ticket. but that's been their ticket to trouble. one woman had the battery stolen right out of her car. >> i tried to stop the car and my coworker noticed this was a little bit open and i said oh, no. >> the oakland city administrator's office says there's a team that looks at parking issues around the city. this situation is one they could add to their list. another uc berkeley student has been robbed on campus. the latest in a string of recent robberies there.

the latest happened between north gate and university drive yesterday morning at 7:15. police say two men approached a young man, showed a gun, and demanded his valuables. the victim handed them over and was not hurt. this comes after another robbery on campus sunday night. a student was pushed to the -- pushed to the ground while walking near moffett library. there were two other robberies near campus last week. chuck reed filed papers to get a pension reform initialty -- initiative on the november 2014 ballot. this would allow state and local government employers to reduce pension and retiree benefits for current employees. mayor reed led getting measure b approved by voters. but the police union is challenging it in court. it's a private face-to-face

meeting involving one of facebook's top executives. took's second in command, sheryl sandburg, will meet with the commissioner from the federal trade commission. while the exact issues remain a secret, the chronicle reports it may involve facebook pushing the government to wrap up its investigation in the company's recent policy changes, such as privacies and names and photos. privacy advocates say the meeting should be held out in open and not behind closed doors. the city of san carlos will spend $250,000 to investigate the pipeline that's at the center of a safety controversy. the city will host consultants to look over pg&e's records on the pipeline that runs across the city under britain avenue. an internal pg&e e-mail raised questions about the possibility of a "san bruno-like situation on the line." pg&e insists the line is safe. the gas line has been shut down and will remain out of service during this investigation. meanwhile, pg&e is doing

some pipeline safety work in san bruno today. utility crews will be at the intersection of state and glenview drives to work on a pipeline. that's a few blocks from the scene of the pipeline disaster in 2010. pg&e is telling people in the area they may briefly smell national gas and hear the sound of it venting from the pipe. but the utility says the gas will quickly dissipate into the atmosphere and is not harmful. pg&e has increased safety inspections and tests since the pipeline disaster in san bruno three years ago. 7:40. the cities of palo alto and east palo alto will hold a meeting tomorrow night to discuss replacing a bridge that links the two areas. now, officials are replacing the 102-year-old bridge which must be removed to accommodate changes to the creek. some support a new and wider span but critics say it will lead to more traffic. the city are looking at

building a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge and a two- lane bridge for cars, among other proposals. the meeting is storm on middlefield road in palo alto. the western span of the bay bridge starting tomorrow will be lit up for extended hours. the hours of the show will run from sunset all the way to down. the artist has programmed new light programs. the show begins on november 1st with a public sunrise viewing party at the ferry building on the morning of november 2nd. once again, b.a.r.t. trains are running, even though there's still no b.a.r.t. deal. coming up at 8:00 we're learning more about why the threat of a strike keeps getting pushed back. and good news about bay area jobs and when it is predicted we could go back to the dot-com boom levels of hiring. and still going in san

the dow up 159. the nasdaq up 36. s&p up 17. well, yahoo!predicts a disappointing end of the year in revenues. yahoo! says the fourth-quarter sales will fall short of analysts' estimates. the company is blaming an advertising crunch. twittery upcoming ipo promises to be one of the biggest filing shows. they will list the shares on the new york stock exchange, not nasdaq, when it goes public. that will likely happen before thanksgiving. the company is hoping to raise $1 billion. a new report suggestions the bay area job market is completely back from the 2008 recession. the report is compiled by the bay area council's economic forecast. due to the tech sector, analysts expect the jobs in the hee rin -- region will continue to grow much higher. by the end of 2015, the number of jobs will return to the

hundreds more were injured in tuesday's quake that measured a 7.2 quake. the central island known for tourism was the hardest hit. crews are working around the clock searching for survivors. a spokesman says landslides to bridges and roads are slowing down rescue efforts. 17 people have been killed after a powerful typhoon on japan's coast. they say it's the strongest typhoon to hit the region in more than ten years. the crippled fukushima nuclear plant was in the path of the typhoon but appears to have escaped the worst of the storm. the alameda county sheriff's office is asking for help to find a woman from san lorenzo. 77-year-old tia herrera was last seen about noon on monday leaving her home. she's described as latina, 4'11" and about 150 pounds. police say she was driving a toyota sedan. the car is a white four-door

2003 toyota with the license plate number of 5 aua 431. they re raw is said -- herrera is said to suffer from dementia. the mother of a 20-year-old is making a plea. eric maybry was shot at brazil avenue. candles and flowers mark the spot. his mother regina duncan says her son was involved in gang activity and she says it's time for other parents to face reality if their children are involved before it's too late. >> this is a cry out for public -- cryout for public safety. you are not safe. no one is safe. if you think you are safe, you are in denial. >> duncan says the shooting could have easily killed or injured a number of people on the busy sidewalk. san francisco police agree,

saying the gunman showed a disregard for public safety. police are asking for the public's help to try to locate the gunman. we talked about heavy traffic on southbound 101 and sal called it. there's backup on the bay bridge. >> there's a big one. that's because it's all connected. the skywa is backed up -- the skyway is backed you. that means the bay bridge is backed up. and they turn the metering lights on. there's no room for all of the cars. so you have to wait at the toll plaza and now the wait times are 30 minutes plus. i'm being a little generous. maybe more like 40 minutes. so it's between 30 and 40. just it pinpoint it here. i do want -- just to pinpoint it here. i do want to mention the traffic will be slow west of treasure island. look at southbound 101. this crash only involved mine hoar injuries but the tow trucks and all of the vehicles that had to push these cars out of the way were stuck in

welcome back to "mornings on 2." 7:55. and five months later, there's new information about the death of america's cup sailor andrew simpson. the san francisco medical examiner released its autopsy report yesterday. it concluded that the cause of death was blunt trauma with drowning and that his death was an accident. the 36-year-old british sailor died on may 9th when the boat capsized and he was trapped underneath the hulls. a san francisco police spokesman says officers will review the report before closing the investigation. a rally is planned over the death of a transgender resident who died in police custody. the death of kayla moore

sparked protests. since then, an organization called berkeley cop watch has put together what it calls a people's investigation. it says inadequate police department policies were responsible for kay lay you a death. the -- kayla's death. the rally is set for 4:00 at the veterans memorial building. new restrictions on so- called robo calls are set to take effect today. the federal comugenycations -- communications commission is requiring telemarketers to have written consent before placing an automated call. the fcc is doing away with an exemption allowing telemarketers to make calls to consumers with whom the caller has an established business relationship. the new rules apply to both land lines and cell phones. this is unbelievable. a southern california marine instructor said she was snorkeling at catalina island last weekend and looked down and saw an eyeball the size of

backed up onto the bridge because the metering lights have been slowed down. there's a problem in san francisco that has made the skyway very slow. it started as a crash. southbound 101 at 280. it's taken a very long time for them to clear this crash. let's take a look at 101 san francisco right now and finally, they've made some progress. they've moved everything out of the way. you can see it's different from what it was. it will take a while for the traffic to unwind but again the better news is they've opened up the lanes on 101. still pretty slow getting into the city. let's talk about the livermore valley. the traffic here is slow getting into dublin. a lot of slow traffic this morning on the nimitz freeway. 88 0 south hey bard as you drive down -- hayward as you drive down to the fremont area. most of that is slow traffic. let's go back to the desk. thank you, sal. two minutes after 8:00. happening today -- negotiations in the b.a.r.t. labor dispute are set to resume in two hours. now, as we heard trains are running today following another

marathon negotiation session that ended early this morning. tara moriarty joins us live from oakland where the talks will be taking place and tear ray, we certainly -- tara, we certainly hope the two sides are getting close. >> reporter: that's right. only two hours away from b.a.r.t. management and the unions walking through the doors. we hope it will be their last time. no one knows when the two sides will be able to haggle this out. that's because they are under a strict gag order right now. at 12:30 this morning, they decided to take a break after nearly 12 hours of talk. around 10:00 last night, the federal mediator came out. he announced there would be no strike and that the unions had agreed to keep negotiating. many chalked that up to the absence of b.a.r.t.'s lead negotiator, tom hock. he left town monday and grace cronican has stepped in. sunday b.a.r.t. management came up with a $57 million proposal that was called best and final. the details are what the two sides are trying to hash out.

the last we heard was 12% pay raises over a four-year period. pension contributions up to 4% and an average of $144 a month in medical contributions. the unions say they did not accept the offer. b.a.r.t. said take it or lead it. and that's when the negotiator stepped in. the two sides will be back at it again this morning at 10:00. the news now, no b.a.r.t. strike. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. we're learning more about why b.a.r.t. workers have decided not to go on strike this week despiting setting numerous teadline -- deadlines and going past them. the b.a.r.t. unions slowly backed away from the strike deadline early yesterday morning. they reportedly made the decision after concluding that b.a.r.t. management was not going to bend in the so-called best and final contract offer. the unions were reportedly worried they risked being on

the receiving end of an angry public backlash if there was a repeat of the walkout in july. stay with us for continuing coverage on b.a.r.t. and a.c. transit. we'll bring you updates during this newscast and on twitter and all day at ktvu.com. new this morning -- frightening moments for a pleasant hill family whose house caught on fire. small explosions were seen from their cars as the flames spread to their driveway. janine de la vega is live in pleasant hill where you just spoke to neighbors, janine. >> reporter: yeah. brian, the young neighbor i spoke to goes to school with the 11-year-old girl who lives here. she says she gets a carpool and rides in that land rover that you see behind me every morning. it's just devastating to see the damage. she also told me the damage brought that mercedes next to it. you can see it's also completely damaged and burned up. the garage and attic here are gutted. the house is unlivable because of all of the destruction.

several explosions were hard throughout the neighborhood on dove court. neighbors called 911 after seeing flames shooting from this house. firefighters arrived and found the house fully engulfed as well as the two cars parked in the driveway. the extreme heat caused the tires of the cars to explode. sparks were flying also because the fire caused a power line to come down. firefighters knocked down the fire in about 30 minutes. neighbors told us that the family was sleeping and woke up to the smell of smoke. >> he said he opened the door and a big, like -- he started getting engulfed in, like, black smoke. so he yelled to the mother and the daughter to get out. the mother and the daughter went out back and hopped the fence and went down the other court and down back to their and he came out the front -- back to there and he came out the front. >> reporter: neighbors say the family had a lot of pets

including a turtle, bunnies and cats. they believe all of the animals got out safely. but we have yet to confirm that with the family. the red cross is providing a hotel for them. firefighters do tell us that the smoke alarm did not go off in the house and they confirmed the fire did start in the garage. but they are still investigating a cause back out here live, you can take a look at the fence that burnt down. that fence divides this house from an apartment complex on the other side. there were fire crews on the other side. luckily, the damage there didn't spread. we're told that the homeowner just came here to the house in the last ten or 15 minutes and he's talking to insurance people and work crews that are going to board up the house and we're told that he also came to check to see if the rabbits that they had inside were okay. they are pretty sure that the cats just bolted as soon as the fire broke out. but again, just a lot to take in for this family who has suffered this loss. reporting live from pleasant hill, janine de la vega, ktvu

channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. new information in the hospital death of lynne spalding. the investigation surrounding her death at sf general has led to new safety precautions. the san francisco chronicle reports stairwell alarms at the hospital must now be manually turned off once they go off. it's believed that she entered a stairwell through an alarm door that may have shut off automatically. her body was found in the stairwell more than two weeks after going missing. it turns out patient disappearances from sf general are pretty common. 96 people have left the host without telling staff since january. the office of statewide health planning and development reports in 2011 more than 38,000 california hospital patients left early or without telling staff. but sfle -- sf general but they say spalding's case is

unprecedented. salmonella traced to three foster farm chicken plants has peculiar features thats have food safety experts concerned. they are worried about the number of people coming down with the form of the disease that's resistant to antibiotics often because livestock are given antibiotics to avid contracting diseases. the outbreak has already sickened more than 300 people. many of those people live in california. two young children in san francisco are back safe with their father who watched helplessley has his suv was stolen with his kids inside. family members say the 1-year- old and 3-year-old were in the back seat last night at 22nd and folsom when a woman jumped in and drove off while the father was outside the suv talking to a friend. police say the suv was found about 45 minutes later abandoned in a driveway on sweeney street two miles away. the children were not hurt. police are still looking for the woman described as thin,

white, and pale with short, curly burgundy-colored hair. the city of fremont is set to revisit a controversial program. police currently operate one surveillance camera on central. the department wants to use federal grant money to expand the program to 20 cameras. privacy advocates are worried but the department is saying maintaining privacy is a priority. apple executives are ecstatic about the vote to approve their plans to build a new megaplex headquarters. tim cook commented on twitter about the new campus. he tweeted our home for innovation and creativity for decade to come. cupertino city council gives unanimous approval for apple's new campus. the plans include plans to build a 60-foot high circular building that looks like a space ship. the complex will sit along 280 will have a lot of open space.

the new headquarters could house more than 14,000 employees and it fulfills a dream of apple's co-founder, the late steve jobs. there's still one final vote set next month. last night, the city council voted unanimously to move forward with the massive development project called coliseum city. some deep pocket investors have already signaled they are interested in backing the proposal. it calls for a new complex for all three major sports franchises plus hotels and housing. it would be built at the site of the current coliseum and arena. well, coming up -- reports of a done deal. not for b.a.r.t. or a.c. transit but in d.c., where it appears movement on an agreement to reopen the government and avoid a threatened treasury default. a major scare in the air after a mid-flight explosion.

8:14. we're getting reaction from passengers on a frightening flight from dallas to atlanta. an engine on a spirit airlines jet burst in flames minutes after takeoff prompting an emergency landing. >> the plane started taking violently and after that, the plane started filling up with smoke. >> all of the vents on the side of the aircraft were just pouring smoke. i mean, full, white smoke. before you knew it, you couldn't see and that's when everybody got scared. >> this is video shot by a passenger. a spokesperson confirmed there was smoke in the cabin. there were no known injuries. los angeles police have arrested an employee at l.a.x. in -- in connection to recent explosions involving dry ice. at least two 20-ounce plastic bottles filled with dry ice exploetsed in restricted the two different -- exploded in

two different areas. the suspect has been identified as 28-year-old dicarlo bennett. he worked as a camp supervisor for service air, an airport contractor. two additional bottles containing dry ice that did not explode were recovered during the investigation. 8:15. happening right now -- we want to go to live pictures where two congressional committees are holding hearings on allegations by republicans that the national park service is blocking access to parks and monuments for political reasons during the government shutdown. meantime, there's developing news this morning about a senate deal to raise the $and end the partial -- debt ceiling and end the partial government shutdown. kyla campbell is live in washington, d.c. with details of the plan and reaction from bay area lawmakers. >> reporter: we knew senate leaders were negotiating last night and this morning. now, the associated press reports that kellry ahott says a bipartisan deal is ready to

go. it would fund the government through january and raise the debt ceiling to early february. the senate deal would require both the house and senate to provide details for a ten-year budget plan by mid-december. it would also strengthen income verification for people who want subsidies to help bay for obamacare. analysts say the pressure is on house speaker john boehner. he's expected to hold a vote if the senate passes the plan. bay area lawmakers blame the tea party for putting the economy at risk for this mad dash for a deal. >> we don't need tantrums around here. but apparently that's the only reason the government continues to be shut down because the party is throwing a tantrum. >> as bad as this government shutdown is, however, the debate over the debt ceiling is taking this dysfunction nuclear >> reporter: we expect to learn more about the deal that's finalized and when the vote can be held when the senate session

colorado avenue. investigators say a clerk was punched in the case by one of the men carrying a gun. this is the second time this 7- eleven store has been robbed by an armed and masked man since june. police don't know if the two crimes are connected but they have a description of the gunman. he's 6'3", weighing 270 pounds. he was wearing a white mask and a black hooded sweatshirt. the mexican government is making a bold move in the battle against po beastie and -- obesity and diabetes. the president has proposed a tax on all sugary drinks. he feels this could be an effective way to tackle a growing health problem. richmond had a similar soda tax plan but voters rejected. a new study on a popular cookie is food for thought. oreos are as addictive as cocaine, at least for lab rats. that's according to

antioch, pittsburg and concord. well, investigators in nevada county are calling it one of the easiest drug busts they've ever made. they say a woman contacted them saying she had drugs to sell. the suspect apparently tried to text a friend bup she was off a -- text a friend but she was off a number and accidentally texted a deputy. after a few texts back and forth, the deputy agreed to meet with her and arrested her on the spot. >> surprised and probably felt a little bit silly that she had contacted law enforcement. >> investigators say mulligan was trying to sell an opiate similar to morphine and faces three felony charges. city college of san francisco is expected to announce its new chancellor today. the chronicle reports he's arthur tyler an anti-terrorism expert who recently resigned from houston community college and once ran sacramento city college. he has a tough task ahead.

we have seen some improvement. i want to mention that the bay bridge is slow because of earlier trouble in san francisco. if you are taking the car unlike the last few days when it's been very light. you can't count on that today. it will be this way for another hour. also, the morning commute will be very slow on 880 southbound because of a crash in fremont near mowry avenue. also a crash in the stone -- allah mo mow air -- alamo area. this crash is causing slow traffic in danville and alamo. 280 has improved getting up to highway. back to the desk. >> all right, sal. thank you. happening today -- no b.a.r.t. strike, at least for today. trains are running following another marathon negotiation session. crt talks between -- contract talks between management and union leaders ended at 12:30 this morning. the two sides are scheduled to meet again at 10:00 a.m. last night a federal mediator

announced the trains would keep running while talks continue. but george cohen, the mediator, did not say much else. >> we're intimately involved in the negotiating process devoting our efforts and energy for the parties to reach an agreement. i will not be taking any questions. i thank you. >> there's been no word on the progress in the contract talks due to a gag order. many bay area commuters are already giving up riding b.a.r.t. ridership records show more than 23,000 fewer people than usual rode b.a.r.t. from friday to tuesday morning. that's a drop of about 5%. we spoke to some frustrated commuters at the fremont b.a.r.t. station this morning. >> i have to check every morning right when i wake up to find out you how i'm gonna get to work. >> i'm tired of getting up early and getting on b.a.r.t. i went to sleep, woke up at 4:00, to see if it was running

today. >> ktvu has on the air at 4:00 a.m. all this week to let you know the news. the once again, the negotiations are set to resume at 10:00 this morning and stay with ktvu for complete coverage. in the meantime, a.c. transit buses are running today. but this time tomorrow, they may not be. claudine wong live in oakland on the a.c. transit possible strike threat and how the governor could change everything. claudine? >> reporter: well, a lot at stake today. we're at 14th and broadway. this is a busy intersection. you have a.c. transit rolling through. you have b.a.r.t. stations down here. you can imagine everyone is coming up up to us are they striking, we have to answer no. and then are you talking about b.a.r.t. or a.c. transit? if you are talking about a.c. transit, keep your eye on the governor. we have been watching out here as people come back and forth and they talked about the uncertainty. one man told us he couldn't even sleep at night because he's know service -- he's so

nervous. tonight is the deadline for the strike notice issued by the union. one driver said he's prepared to walk off the job. are you ready to strike? >> if it's what has to be done, it has to be done. >> reporter: do you plan to be at work tomorrow? >> i plan on it. i'm gonna get dressed like nothing has changed but if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. >> reporter: a.c. transit says a request for a 60- day cooling off period was hand delivered to the governor yesterday morning. officials say if it's not granted, results could be catastrophic. one man told us he rides every morning with the same group of commuters. all of them are worried. >> we all catch the bus together and we all know each other. it's throwing everybody off. >> reporter: everybody is worried? >> yeah. you can't sleep at night. >> reporter: it's expected the governor will grant this cooling-off period because there are fewer reasons to do than not to.

while the exact issues remain a secret, the chronicle reports it may involve facebook pushing the government to wrap up the investigation in the company's recent policy regarding flames and photos -- names and photos. privacy advocates say the meeting should be in the open and not behind closed doors. the city of san car close will spend $250,000 to investigate a pipeline. the city will hire consultants to look over pg&e's records on the pipeline that runs across the city under britain avenue. an internal pg&e e-mail raises questions about the possibility of a san bruno-type situation on the line. pg&e insists the line is safe. the gas line has been shut down and will remain out of service during the investigation. meanwhile, pg&e is doing some pipeline safety work in san bruno today. utility crews will be at the spwnt of estate and -- intersection of estate and glenview to work on a gas

pipeline. that's a few blocks from the scene of the pipeline disaster in 2010. pg&e is telling people in the area they may briefly smell natural gas and hear the sound of it venting from the pipe. but the utility says the gas will quickly dissipate into the atmosphere and is not harmful. pg&e has increased safety inspections and tests since the pipeline disaster in san bruno three years ago. starting next month, the western span of the bay bridge will be glimmering through the whole night. usually the lights are urn turned off at -- turned off at 2:00 a.m. thanks to donations it will return from sunrise to sunset. the show begins on november 1st with the public advise viewing party at the ferry building on november 2nd. 8:39. another uc berkeley student, robbed on campus. the terrifying early-morning confrontation and the crime wave in the past week. explosions are heard in a

transit will strike if the governor does not step in. yesterday, a.c. transit petitioned the governor for a 60-day cooling off period just like b.a.r.t. did. the governor's office is considering the request. a house tower with towering flames drove a pleasant hill family out in the cold this morning. ktvu's janine de la vega just spoke with the homeowner who may have insight into what started the fire. >> reporter: good morning, brian. the homeowner is calm, taking it all in stride. you can see there's work crews out here. they just put up a chain-link fence around the house where you can see there's some devastating damage. now that homeowner told me that yesterday he stained the front deck of his home and left some oily rags sitting outside on top of a garbage can near the side of the house. he said maybe that could have caused the fire. he was talking to the chief and said maybe that started some sort of a combustion. he just doesn't know.

several explosions were heard throughout the neighborhood on dove court shortly after 1:30. neighbors called 911 after seeing flames shooting from the house. firefighters arrived and found the house fully engulfed as well as the two cars that were parked in the driveway. the extreme heat caused the tires of the cars to explode. sparks were also flying because the fire caused a power line to come down as well. firefighters knocked down the fire in 30 minutes. the homeowner told us that his wife actually thought there was a burglar in the garage. he got up to investigate. when he opened the garage door that's when he smelled smoke and he -- him and his family ran out. neighbors feel for that family. >> it's sur rule. it's -- surreal. i didn't appreciate fully until last night the work the fire

and police do. they were awesome. >> reporter: , now the family had -- now, the family had a lot of pets, including cats, a turtle and some rabbits. just in the last 20 minutes, the homeowner did find two of the cats. they are still looking for one of the other cats. the red cross is providing a hotel for the family because the house is unlivable. there's too much smoke and water damage. we were able to get footage from inside the house to see how bad it got. firefighters confirm the fire started inside the garage. but again, they are still investigating. i want to show you this big pile of debris. this is all of the insulation inside the house. you can see a smoke detector sitting in the pibl of debris -- pile of debris. that smoke detector we're told didn't go off. the homeowner said they were sleeping in the house for 13 minutes.

they know that because there's surveillance video. they have security cameras inside the house. once that homeowner opened the garage door, that's when the smoke alarms went off. but it didn't alert them initially to the fire. reporting live from pleasant hill, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. new this morning, an elderly woman in the east bay who was reported missing has been found. 77-year-old herrera was last seen monday leaving her home in san leandro. we just got off the phone with the alameda county sheriff's office. a spokesman told us without going into specifics that she was found safe last night. there were concerns about her health. she suffers from early stages of dementia. a unique program in alameda county is helping people with disabilities get a job. pam cook joins us now to talk about the program that's changing lives. this is such a great story, pam. >> oh, thank you. yeah. awareness, action and inclusion. that is the theme for this year's employment conference in

alameda county. it is celebrating and raising awareness of the need to integrate people with disabilities into the work force. now, one of their success stories is joel sidney. he's 31 years old, graduated from uc berkeley. so you might think it would be easy for him to get a job. however, joel is autistic and spent a long and frustrating time looking for work. he's working in the alameda county sheriff's office with the help of a program called search. it helps people with various developmental disabilities get an internship, build a resume and then land a job. >> he has choices now in life and this is really something that has allowed him to decide what he wants in life and to have access to getting those changes that he wants. >> she's joel's job coach. she believes he might have found a job eventually on his own but this would not have been something that he would enjoy or one that truly

utilizes -- utilizes his skills. and hopes that joel is an inspiration to others. >> look hard into your potential, ask for help and support and learn the skills you need for the work place. don't give un. >> don't give up. that's his message. 14 graduates in alameda county now have full-time jobs. the program will be highlighted at a conference tomorrow at the oakland, asian cultural center. alameda hopes to educate other communities on the importance of having diversity and inclusion into the workplace. >> thank you. jackie speier will heeld a popular event to help -- will hold a popular event to help constituents find a job. she began hosting these in 2010. job seekers will get a chance to talk to employers, have access to job resources and

8:54. another uc berkeley student has been robbed on campus. the latest in a string of recent robberies there. this last one happened between north gate and university drive yesterday morning at 7:15. police say two men approached the young man, showed a gun and demanded his valuables. the victim handed them over and was not hurt. this comes after another robbery on campus sunday night. a student was pushed to the ground while walking near moffett library. the suspects ran off with the student's cell phone. there were two other robberies near campus last week. five months later, there's new information about the death of america's cup sailor andrew bart simpson. the medical examiner released the autopsy report yesterday. it concluded that the cause of death was blunt trauma with drowning and that his death was

an accident. the 36-year-old british sailor died may 9th when the team's boat capsized and he was trapped underneeblth one of the hulls. a -- underneath one of the hules. the san francisco police will review the report before closing the investigation. dan boil from the san jose sharks is doing better after a nasty hit. fighting broke out last night. the illegal hit smashed boil into the boards knocking him out. mcclellan said he's alert and doing okay which is a welcomed relief considering he was harted off -- karblted off in a -- carted off in a stretcher. the man who hit him will likely face suspension. it's an unbelievable but true fishtail. a southern california marine instructor said she was snorkeling catalina island last weekend when she looked down and saw the eyeball the size of a half-dollar. she swam closer and this is

what she found. a giant fish. it took 15 people to drag the dead 18-foot long creature onto shore. the massive eel-like fish was almost perfectly intact. these fish dive the depth of 3,000 feet and they are rarely seen and largely unstudied. 8:57. let's check in with sal. east bay still a mess, sal? >> yes. unfortunately. i wish it wasn't. today it's still very heavy on the eastshore freeway westbound heading out. also slow at the bay bridge toll plaza. this is because of earlier problems in san francisco. and the nimitz freeway as we look at the wide view here, still a lot of slow traffic on 880, 238 and 580. let's go to steve. sunshine for coast, bay inland. temperatures will be warming up. a lot of 70s. upper 70s and a lot of low 80s. we'll hold that a little bit cooler tomorrow, coast bay, there might be patchy fog.
