workers picketing. welcome back to the ktvu morning news i'm claudine wong in for pam cook. >> good morning, everybody i'm brian flores. let's get you started with weather and traffic. steve paulson is here. >> fog is back. it will be a much, much cooler over by the coast. its not making much of a surge inlapped. we will get a little bigger difference on the forecasted highs. today we all get 60s and 70s. its not moving too far inland. 40s or 50s but its much, much cooler for some over by the beaches and bay. san francisco which was 79 yesterday i mean 78-80 and the last three days going 68 today. 38 in reno. 40s for many. probably a few 30s to the north. other than that it will be nice

and warm if ts 60s and open is. here is sal. we are looking at the commute and right now it looks good if you are drying to get to the city in your car. if you want to get up early and do that, that would be a good idea. we will see more people using their car today. we will see earlier backups. right now it still looks good. if you want to get out there early, that would be a very good bet. looking at interstate 880 traffic looks good as you drive through with no major problems. we've been looking at the bay area commute, and we don't see any major delays yet. again getting on the -- commuters have been preparing and dreading for the possibility of a bart strike for days and this morning it

has happened. . if -- ktvu alex savidge is watching the special buses at bart stations that are running this morning. but we do want to begin with it'll tom who is covering the strike and those failed negotiations. tara. >> the unions say they were -- >> reporter: the unions say they were given a poison pill in the final labor hours. this has been a very frustrating end to six months of labor talks and a cooling off period. both sides said they didn't want a strike but here we are. at 4:00 yesterday afternoon they emerged with no deal. agreed with pay, health, and benefits but no work rules.

>> i've been doing this 25 years as a labor organizer, as a leader of a union i have never seen a process like this in my life. and i actually question the ability of grace current current can and the district. bart did make a last minute plea at 7:00 last night saying it would be able to up its last offer but apparently it was too late. how long will this strike go on? bart says the union wants to put it to a vote by october 27th. we think it could take that long. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >> thousands of frustrated commuters will take charter buss to get to work this morning. alex savidge is live at the walnut creek bart station where people are already lining up. alex. >> reporter: and they know,

claudine, that space is limited on board the charter buses provided by bart. a lot of people have done this before. so you can see behind me this is the the scene here early this morning. people got here about 3:45 this morning is when we saw the first -- the first one will lee at 5:00 a.m. from here at the walnut creek station. and bart will be offering free shuttle bus service federal nine east bay stations today with the trains out of service. along with walnut creek you can get a ride to west oakland, concord, lafayette, dublin, pleasanton, san leandro, hayward, and fremont. a couple minutes ago i talked to a commuter. he got up four hours early and he is frustrated with bart workers. >> they've had weeks, months to come up with a solution and they talk about respect. we are out here at 4:00 lined

up waiting for a bus. we are the customers. they are effecting us socially. a lot of people are getting up they have children and have jobs to get to. >> reporter: there will be more than 100 charter buses picking up today from each of those nine east bay stations but we saw during the last parking lot strike the buses will be in high demand. there are only so many eats to go -- so many seats to go around. bart says they will only be able to accommodate 6,000 commuters a day with those buses. as far as the afternoon commute goes, there will also be charter buses picking up in san francisco near the transbay terminal. that service begins at 3:00 this afternoon. live in walnut creek alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. time now 4:37. let's get you an update on some of the other top stories.

police say a 90-year-old driver that hit two six-year-old boys with his suv accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the break. one of the boys was rushed into surgery with life threatening injuries. the other is expected to survive a man arrested -- randy was -- her body was found five days later. the two once daten. we are already -- no strong hers. there are not hired when the building was built. herbover awe four -- and a district attorney is can expected to make an

announcement today. the da office set to announce if it will charge a san francisco firefighter for a fatal accident in the minutes after last july's crash landing at sfo. we are also following developing news at east palo alto. firefighters are mopping up hot spots. that fire broke out around 2:00 this morning and damaged two homes. a double shooting on treasure island is under investigation now. they went to the scene on california avenue at avenue d shortly after 11:30 last night. officers found one victim there shot in the harm. a second victim walked into san francisco general hospital to be treated. no word from sfpd on any arrests or suspects. protestors surrounded the bus last night outside the san francisco offices of

immigration and customs enforcement. the protest blocked traffic at sampson and washington streets for two hours. protestors say its part of a national movement to talk to president obama. demonstrators say its the first time a group has ever blocked a deportation bus in the city. it ended when the police escorted the protestors away. no arrests were made. newsom will highway an aclu panel that is crafting a ballot pressure that could go before voters in 2016. >> we are going to learn a lot

from washington. we are going to learn a lot about the issues of credit card use and banking and all the federal related issues. >> california voters rejected a measure that would have legal marijuana three years ago. washington state and colorado are the only two states that have legalized marijuana for recreational use. here in california and a dozen other states marijuana is legal for ma dissal use. hears of l hit an all time high. the company says its earnings rose nearly $3 billion or 36%. on the downside a decline in ad prices. still google rose in after hours trading to $960 per share. al gore may not have invented the internet but he is

all right million . you are taking a live look at the picket line. this is the scene bay area commuters did not want to see but yes they are on strike again. at this point there are no new talks scheduled. those trains stopped running early this morning. and now hundreds of thousands of people need to scramble for other ways to get to work today. today's strike came as a marathon bargaining session that lasted nearly 30 hours. there was hope at this point yesterday that maybe they would get a deal but everything abruptly ended late yesterday afternoon. both the unions and bart management said yes,s two sides were close to an agreement on economic issues. but then those talks broke down and we are told those talks broke down because of work rule discussions. we do have complete team coverage for you this morning and we will be covering this for you all morning long. toyota is recalling more

than 800,000 cars because of a problem that could prevent the air bag from deploying in a crash. if the recall includes the asynesia, camry, and avlon. all from the 2012-2013 model years. there are new developments in a salmonella alert involving chicken. a costco is recalling fosters rotisserie chicken. this is in addition to the 40,000 pounds of foster farm chicken recalled last week. the products yet to recall are kirkland signature feature farm. rotisserie chicken soup and rotisserie chicken salad.

women are aweing the maker of the smoothing product. the women behind the class action lawsuit claim save smoothing kit burned their scalp. child is being treated at oakland's children's hospital. his father took him there last week saying the boy had a seizure and passed out after he picked him up from day care. am nine-year-old boy whom snuck on to a flight from minneapolis to las vegas will not be returned to his parents. a judge has ruled the boy will live apart from his parents while he under goes therapy and evaluated for special education services. his parents will be allowed to visit and call their son on the phone. the judges ruling comes amid reports the boy frequently ran

eventually people did adjust to it. this is the first day people went through this in july. a lot of people did. and you know what is up. it will be very crowded on almost all the freeways leading into san francisco and throughout contra costa county. this is a look at the east shore freeway the traffic is slow. i think some people may be able to work from home today and the flexion -- to mr. is let's move along and take look at the east bay freeways. the traffic moving along relatively well. the road sensors which turn red when we see it slow has not -- to contra costa county. even highway 4 is not that bad. we will see what happens here. so far so good on 680, 24 and highway 4. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. the fog has returned very

shallow. probably pockets of it are pretty thick on the coast. highway 1. but inland it will not make much of a difference. we will see a cooler pattern for the coast. the coast, fog has returned. it has been absent for a long, long time. temperatures upper 70s to near 80s. however there are hints of something sneaking in underneath next week so we will see in that materializes. but the forecast models are coming together on that. i believe it. you can see that fog bank which was nonexistent for a long time and it was a little patchy yesterday but it never made it to the coast. well, its made it to the coast today. 50 in san francisco down nine from yesterday at this time. that is a huge difference. that tells you even though there isn't a breeze its making a big impact. this is just going to be those over by the waters edge. 60s and 70s for those near the bay or the coast. yet upper 70s.

low 80s continuing again for those. so instead of berkeley and oakland being 80 or 81 they will be in the 70s today. mid 70s for some. santa cruz coming down, down, down. 77 yesterday. we will go 74 today. upper 70s. mainly on the peninsula. 64 now daly city. fog will be kind of controlling things by the coast and the bay. it looks pretty quiet inland. temperatures not changing much. hundreds of commuters will be looking to take buses across the bay now that they can't take bart. janine de la vega is monitoring the situation with ac transit and joins us live from oakland. janine. >> reporter: several people have already started showing up. we have seen two buses come by. some of the commuters are a little confused they are first time riders and are not sure when the buses would start coming. they say they normally wouldn't be here this early but they

wanted to make sure they would get on a bus when they starletted arriving -- started arriving. commuters aren't happy about having to wake up early but don't want to risk being late for work. >> i got here thinking i might be able to get on the bus and wouldn't have to spend an hour and a half on the bay bridge. >> once the commute picks up there will be staff at the terminal and the bus stations to help commuters.

i understand their plight but its just you know be fair to the commuters. >> as you can imagine, thousands of frustrated customers have to find another way to get to work this morning for the second time in three months bart is on strike. >> ktvu news got an up close look at a major water project in the bay area. the five mile long bay tunnel runs under the floor of the bay from newark to menlo park. it runs inside the tunnel 124 feet below the bay. seismic safety is one of the new goals. the pipeline is designed to sway up to seven feet. >> when you think about it, close to 90 or 95% of our water

does come through these four pipelines. so it is critical we have that lifeline. >> engineers say the project is six months ahead of schedule. the water should be flowing through that pipeline by late next year. coming up we are expecting a pretty rough friday morning commute in the bay area as bart workers are on strike for the second time in three months. >> and right now hundreds of thousands of commuters are trying to find ways to get to work or school.

on the extra buses. >> it is friday, october 18th i'm pam cook. it will be a rough one. >> yeah. good news it is friday. i'm brian flores in for dave clark. let's get your weather and traffic started. >> there is fog on the coast but that will be the biggest impact that will be over by the beaches. coast, fog returns in a big way. its making a pretty big push. it will still be warm inlapped because thing to is going north to south not west to east. there will be subtle changes inland. still near 80. 40s to 50s but san francisco is much, much cooler today than they were the last couple of days. i think they will dip to 50 which is seven or eight degrees cooler than yesterday. otherwise it will be clear. the coast fog will play into the weather. other than that it doesn't matter inland. temperatures still stay above average. fog, sun, nice. temperatures very close to those that they've been away from the coast. but by the coast they are definite
