good morning, we are looking at san francisco this morning. we're out talking with commuters, people who are trying to find another way to get to work. and it's not easy. it's very crowded out there. we're going to have all of your commuting options, team coverage from our reporters this morning. thank you for joining us. luckily it's friday. >> luckily, yes. >> it is october 18. i'm pam cook. >> i'm brian flores in for dave clark. steve paulson is here. it's going to be sunny today. >> psun over the bay and roaring down the coast. forecast headlines, talk about a cooler pattern today. sunny inland but fog or sun for the weekend. looks quite until thursday next week. we could get a little system. coast and much much cooler this

morning. mostly sunny, nice to warm, a little cooler coast and bay, mild to warm inland. 30s to 40s to right at 50. san francisco running about 9 degrees cooler than they were at this time yesterday. that's a big change instead of 79 or 80 degrees, 68 today. there's low clouds and a westerly breeze. otherwise, fog, but there's a lot of fog there today. sunny away from the coast but some of the patchy low cloud is making a show this morning. cooler coast and bay. upper 70s. low 80s. by the water, 60s and 70s. it has been a tough commute already obviously because the b.a.r.t. trains are not running and we have a big back up trying to get to the bay bridge toll plaza. this is news chopper 2 showing the back up at the toll plaza. what i want to show news chopper 2 is if you can look at the back up from the maze and we can wait to see this because i want to show the traffic getting to the maze. you can see 880 ramp is very crowded. and also 580 and 80 just getting to this part of the

mcarthur maze is very very slow. 580 is backed up to 24. and there is the actual mcarthur maze. 580 itself is backed up beyond 24, but 24 is backed up from the tunnel. as you can see, it's a very very long drive. now, the only good thing i can say is people have gone through this before in july, and it's not a surprise to anyone how backed up this is. there's the 580 interchange. i want to mention traffic is going to be busy in other parts of the bay. we just showed you from news chopper 2, those back ups, highway 24 is solid from before. 680 in walnut creek and pleasant hill is getting slow. 680 is backed up from 242 down to highway 24, and you will see a lot of slow traffic this morning but not on 680 in san ramon. 580 is slow. 680 heading to the south bay is is not bad. i want to show you a picture of 280 in san jose. that's a little bit slow getting up to 880 although the south bay, most traffic is not

affected by the b.a.r.t. strike. 7:03. let's go back to the o desk. topping the news, it is the news we did not want to have to bring you this morning. b.a.r.t. workers on strike, shutting down the entire transit system. trains stopped running early this morning, leaving hundreds of thousands of commuters scrambling for others ways to get to work. sal has been showing you some of them. we have team coverage this morning. ktvu's alex savage covering the special charter buses. first let's go to tara moriarty covering the striking workers and the failed negotiations. >> reporter: we're 7 hours into the strike and we know a lot of b.a.r.t. riders are extremely frustrated by this strike. but we have heard a lot of people driving by here at the lake merritt b.a.r.t. station honking in support of the workers here. picketers frustrated with the way talks broke down. after six months of negotiations and a cool down period, no negotiation. and a federal mediator

announced his job was done and he could not get the two sides to agree to a contract. the union says they agreed on pay, health and benefits but not work rules. the union said b.a.r.t. presented the switch in the final minutes of talks. b.a.r.t. defended its actions. >> this contract, this labor negotiation is all about the long-term sustainability of b.a.r.t. and its contribution to the economy and the environment of the bay area. >> and i actually question the ability of the district to understand how to get a collective bargaining ability. i question their actual skill and intention. >> reporter: the union said that b.a.r.t. wanted to change employees fixed work schedules. some people work a 4-hour shift. others work 8 or 10-hour shifts and they said changing this up would be a stress for workers with child care issues. the union wanted to take the issue to arbitration but b.a.r.t. didn't. they made a last minute plea

saying b.a.r.t. would be willing to up its last offer of $57 million. how long did the strike go. b.a.r.t. says it wants the union to put the offer before october 27th, but we have no idea how long this strike will go. perhaps until then or longer. live from oakland, i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. we also have video of east bay b.a.r.t. workers walking off the job early this morning at the hayward train station. and that's what they were doing. they grabbed picket signs and went on strike, and they had flies ready for more people to join them. -- supplied ready for more people to join them. they are providing charter buses to get in and out of san francisco. and alex savage is at the station where commuters have been lining up for hours. we understand the tickets are going fast there. >> reporter: yeah, you know, the space has just about run out on the charter buses, at least the ones from the walnut creek station here. commuters are annoyed and some

are angry that they had to get up hours early this morning, leave for work several hours early to get a spot on board one of the charter buses. this is the second to last bus that will be picking up from here at the walnut creek station, so they have had buses picking up throughout the morning. the space is very limited and i'm told just one more bus will be coming here sometime soon to get another batch of commuters on their way into san francisco. a lot of people got here very early this morning. check out the scene here this morning as people lined up for these charter buses before 4:00 this morning. there was a line already forming here at the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. people want to make sure they'll be able to snag a seat on board the buses. the space is limited. about a hundred buses total are picking up from a handful of east bay b.a.r.t. stations this morning and taking commuters directly into san francisco. there are no stops involved here. those buses will only be able to get, though, about 6000 commuters where they need to go today. that's really just a drop in the bucket compared to the kind

of ridership that b.a.r.t. usually deals with on a daily basis. a lot of people out here they have been through this before during the last strike and they aren't happy. >> a bit of frustration, but i did this in july. and it works out okay for me, not great but okay. >> reporter: but not something that you want to do for a long time. >> no, no. it's frustrating that they can't come to some conclusion. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. is offering free shuttle bus service from nine east bay stations this morning along with walnut creek. you can catch one of the buses at west oakland, concord, lafayette, dublin, pleasanton, san leandro, hayward and fremont and the shuttle bus service will continue through 8:00 this morning or until the buses have run out and the seals have -- seats have been filled up.

they will be picking up in downtown san francisco near the transbay terminal at 3:00 this afternoon what could be a frustrating afternoon commute for a lot of people as they try to make their way home. live this morning, alex savage ktvu channel 2 news. there are alternatives for commuters in the east bay who are not heading to san francisco. county connection will run a small number of buses during commute hours between the concord b.a.r.t. station and 20 20th and broadway in oakland. there will also be a few buses running between down oakland and the walnut creek station. the wheels bus system adding service from dublin, pleasanton b.a.r.t. station into oakland o. construction on the richmond bridge could make this morning's commute even worse. work near the toll plaza has been backing up traffic to marin and highway 101 for several weeks. traffic could be worse than it was during the last strike in july because many commuters as you recall were on vacation. we'll be here all morning to help you navigate your commute.

at ktvu.com you'll find a comprehensive list of transit options. got an earful from riders, the district outlined the plans at a meeting on board of its ferries last night. riders will likely have to pay anywhere from 2 to $5 to park at the terminal. it's been free. a handful of riders spoke out against the fee idea. the proposal to charge for parking could be approved next month and results in a fee starting in january. time now is 7:10, and new this morning, firefighters are looking into the cause of a fire that damaged two homes in east palo alto overnight. the fire started at 2:00 this morning at a home on lotus driver. two homes have significant fire and smoke damage. people inside smelled smoke and saw their homes go up in flames minutes later. >> we were in there watching television and laying around

relaxing and all of a sudden we smelled smoke, and her son and is her daughter came and said, hey, mom, get out, get out,. >> one firefighter did suffer a minor injury fighting the fire. the san mateo county district attorney is expected to make a major announcement today in the investigation into the asiana crash. the da's office is set to announce whether it will charge a san francisco firefighter for a fatal accident in the minutes after the crash. 49-year-old firefighter ran over and killed a plane crash survivor on the tarmac at sfo. the 16-year-old girl was a student from china. coming up, the cost of shutting down the rock. how much money the operator of o -- of alcatraz ferry lost during the shut down. casual car poolers pouring into san francisco, what they are telling us about the b.a.r.t. strike and this morning's commute. and the freeways getting to

welcome back to mornings on 2. more on or continuing coverage of the b.a.r.t. strike this morning. more fall out. this is a live picture from news chopper 2, and we are looking at the port of oakland. the longshoreman's union, now picketing there. again, a live picture, you can see what is going on. the union workers say that they are standing in solidarity with members of the two b.a.r.t. unions, currently now on strike this morning. the dock workers tell us that their work stoppage could possibly shut down one of the port terminals and cease part

of this morning's operation. time now is 7:14 and as sal has been mentioning, the b.a.r.t. strike is affecting traffic. instead of driving themselves, people are taking part in ride shares. david stevenson live in san francisco with the continuing coverage of the b.a.r.t. strike. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, i'm standing at the corners of fremont and howard streets and you can see the casual car pooling going on. getting off at an intersection. a little unsafe. we have been seeing a steady stream of people coming in for casual car pooling. look at some video we shot just under an hour ago this morning. these are folks coming in from the east bay. we have been talking to people from oakland and as far out as fairfield as well, too. a number of these people say they usually casual car pool on any given workday, but the one thing they have in common is they have been coming in an hour early to those pick up spots over in the east bay because they are concerned

there's going to be more casual car pooling and longer lines going on. there's actually more cars that are available this morning for those who want to cue up for casual car pooling. >> usually i check casual pool around 8ish. today i had to come in early. there's no way you can make it to work when it's this bad. >> i used to leave at 6:30. i left at 6:00 this morning. >> reporter: what was the ride in like? >> it was fairly easy, it only took less than an hour to get in. it wasn't bad at all. >> reporter: there's no formal statistics available for how much casual car pooling is done on a typical friday, but again, we are seeing a steady stream of people dropping off. what will be interesting as the morning goes onto see if there are the same number of cars going past the 9:00 hour. maybe that will get some indication whether more people decided to do casual car pooling out of concern over the b.a.r.t. strike. again, a number of people being dropped off right now at this hour. we're just down the block from

the transbay terminal, too, where we have been seeing a steady stream of people coming in from there. we're going to try to get more information about how many people are coming in much higher numbers than typical fridays. people getting out of the cars. people say the commute so far has been fairly smooth. we're going to be talking to more of them over the course of the next hour, and we'll let you know what they have to say coming up. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson ktvu channel 2 news. well, in other news, the continuing coverage of the government now that the u.s. government is back open, it is the task of a newly formed budget committee to keep it that way. the deal that reopened the government will only providing funding through january 15th january 15th and extends the debt ceiling through february 7 february 7th. after their first meeting, members of the committee say they're optimistic. >> we believe there is common ground in showing the american people that congress can work, and make sure that our economy

is growing and that people are back to work, and that we can do the job that we were sent here to do. >> let's understand what we're doing here. we're going back to regular order. this is the budget prose. the house passes a budget. you come together to try and reconcile the differences. that's the way we're supposed to do things. >> in addition to finishing the budget, president obama also calling on congress to pass immigration reform legislation and a farm bill before the end of the year. the government shut down cost the company that runs the alcatraz island ferry system $3 million. like other national parks, alcatraz was closed to the public for the 16 days. the company had to refund 100,000 tickets and temporarily layoff 15 employees. 7:18 is the time. probably the most important person here, john,. >> it is frustrating. i advised someone not to try

the bay bridge. i hate to tell someone don't go, but if you have the option, don't use the bay bridge because all the commutes heading towards it are very very slow, 580, 24, 88 88 880. now, i realize that you have to go sometimes and -- 580 o, 24, 880. now, i realize that you have to sometimes and if you can delay those meetings, i don't mean to to make anyone angry. people can't wait statement. i get that. -- can't wait statement. i get that. 580 is backed up west of lake shore. we're seeing some improvement getting to this area, and i have a feeling that as we get later in the morning, we're going to see more improvement. let's talk about the b.a.r.t. system not running and i want to mention that san mateo bridge and also the richmond

bridge are taking more traffic. now it's steve's turn. yes, it is. thank you sal. i gets lots of turns here. a little change in the pattern. the fog has come back. a westerly breeze, cooler coast and bay. always the trickiest forecast. and brandon said no fog, and all of a sudden the fog is here. and it's 48. it's cold for some. and the fog is filling in a little bit. it will still be mild to warm inland and cooler for everybody. definitely cooler by the beaches. storm track jet stream stays to the north until next week. signs saying i'm going to come underneath and pay a visit. that wouldn't be until next thursday though. we'll see how that pans out. san francisco the last three days, 76. 80 and 68. too much fog. and areas to the west could be cooler than that. oakland, 81, 82, all week, today 74. westerly breeze. and there's the fall, hasn't been here for a long, long time. it's there today making a

little push. we have the fog and look at that, first little snow system of the season for the plains, colorado into kansas. not a big deal but it's there. 40s for some. 30s for others. san francisco at 50. half-moon bay 46. there's some cool breeze. walnut creek at 42 degrees. it will be sunny, exempt for areas that have the fog. fog, sun, nice, but not as nice as it has been, especially over at coast, a couple days ago, we had 80s and now we're getting back to the 60s and 70s by the water's edge. upper 70s and low 80s. but shaved off, sonoma, napa, nevada, san rafael. and very low 80s. if you don't get a west breeze. more 70s around the bay. very low 80s santa cruz. 77 yesterday. 74 today. 60s now on the coast. upper 60s for some. low 70s. and still some 70s on the peninsula and i think the 80s are disappearing for a couple days. inland temps hover near the 80-

good morning right now. highway 4 is going to be slow coming up to the concord area and 680 is slow. obviously we're seeing more traffic on the roads, but it's seeing some improvement in some of the areas approaching the bay bridge. we'll tell you how much improvement is coming to those areas in my next traffic update. well, tomorrow a safety meeting will be held in berkeley to talk about several recent robberies near the cal campus. the latest happened tuesday morning. two armed men robbed a student walking near north gate and university drive. the student wasn't hurt.

campus police say this was the 5 5th robbery or attempted robbery near campus in less than a week. that community meeting starts at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon at good shepherd church on 9th street. toyota is recalling more than 800,000 cars because of a problem that could prevent the air bag from deploying. the recall includes the venza, camry, avalon and the hybrid versions. all are from the 2012 and 2013 model years two minor injuries are reported. you have heard of crash test dummies, right, what about crash test dogs, stuffed animals, the size of dogs are using for crash tests. they can test the effectiveness of pet restraint. owners say the change is long overdue. now, the sleepy pawed click it utility was the only restraint to keep dogs in their seats during the crash tests. it costs about $70. coming up, there may be good news for home buyers in

the bay area. the real estate company data quick and the median price fell for the second month in a row. real estate agents say prices are being slashed on high end properties and buyers are seeing less competition. realtors are seeing 2 to 3 offers on a home instead of 30 to 40. time now is 7:25. it has happened. b.a.r.t. workers are on strike again. what union leaders say led to the break down of this week's marathon negotiations. we are live in oakland with commuters who are using ac transit. we'll tell you how the commute is going for bus riders and what it looks like for people trying to get into san francisco. good morning, you can tell that there are a lot more people on the road just by looking at any of our traffic pictures in the east bay. it's already slow on 880 for example, heading to downtown oakland. we'll tell you more about the crowded spots coming up. we have had sunshine and warm temps, coast bay and inland, the fog which has been on vacation is back.

of the b.a.r.t. strike and how it's affecting this morning's commute. good morning, i want to take you out live to the bay bridge toll plaza this morning where you can see it is very crowded. boy, a bunch of cars out there as early as 5:15 i think it was when it really started getting crowded. a lot of people taking to the roads this morning because of the b.a.r.t. strike. so we're going to take you around the bay area to check in on the o morning commute. it is friday -- on the morning commute. it's friday october 18th. i'm pam cook. >> and i'm brian flores in for dave clark. and it's sunny, but cloudy. there are some areas of fog, very shallow. but it has returned. 80s on the coast and around the bay, but today will be cooler. the fog came roaring back, and it's just creeping in. it will be sunny inland but the coast and bay fog is making a little bit of a push. instead of the easterly breeze, it's turned westerly or southwesterly which means cooler, coast and bay. and a lot of locations will

hover toward 80 degrees. a cooler feel in the morning, 48 in santa r o -- rosa. temperatures near 80s. 24 in tahoe. 45 sacramento. monterey 46 as well. that fog is screaming down the coast. inland it will be sunny and nice to warm. cooler coast and bay. temperatures instead of the 80s across the coast and bay, it will be now in the 60s and the 70s. inland temps working up to the low 80s. here's sal. steve, obviously today is a busy day. maybe you're just waking up and you don't know that b.a.r.t. trains are not running, but that's probably not the case. you know this. so let's show you the bay bridge. there seems to be an improvement in the fast track lanes. the lanes have opened up quite a bit. i don't want to get you too happy because getting to this spot is going to take you a while. i want to show you the maps now. you can see that right here on the red, getting up to the bay

bridge or getting down to it, you can see just kind of draw an arrow and trace the red here on the map. that's all stop and go traffic, and this one right here, heading down. you see on your tv screen. i'm tracing that. those are road sensors coming in from the richmond area solid to the mcarthur maze and the bay bridge toll plaza and the traffic is going to be busy. a lot of b.a.r.t. commuters on the road. 680 danville and san ramon looks good, but 580 westbound is slow still. that commute has improved quite a bit. when you get to the nimitz freeway, all the way to the dumb barton bridge is slow. the dunbarton bridge is slow. 280 through downtown san jose san jose does look good. it's 7:32. let's go back to the desk. thank you. it's not the way to end the workweek. b.a.r.t. workers are on strike shutting down the entire transit system for the second time in three

months. we have team coverage this morning but we begin with tara moriarty with this morning's strike and what continues to be a bitter labor dispute. >> that's right. a poison pill is actually what one union leader said that b.a.r.t. was trying to give them and they just could to the swallow it. so -- could not swallow it. so here they are picketing. after six months of negotiations and a cooling down period, talks broke down. a mediator said his job was done. the union said they agreed with b.a.r.t. on pay, health and benefits but not work rules. >> we asked them repeatedly, can you not agree to an alternative to a strike. and the answer repeatedly was no. this is the way they want to solve the conflict in a fight, in a street fight. in a public fight that tremendously inconveniences the community. >> reporter: b.a.r.t.'s board president made a last minute

plea at 7:00 saying b.a.r.t. would be willing to up its last offer of $57 million. >> there's room to move on financials and there's room to move on work rules. we want an agreement that works for everyone. >> reporter: the concern seems to be a little too late. the union said that b.a.r.t. wanted to change employees fixed work schedules. some people work a 4-hour shift. others work 8 or 10-hour shifts and this would be a stress for workers with child care issues. the contract came down to worker rights. the union said they wanted to take it to arbitration but b.a.r.t. did not. and how long the strike will go is really anyone's guess. live from oakland, i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. in the meantime, b.a.r.t. is providing charter buses to help people get in and out of san francisco. the buses will run from each of the 9 east bay locations on this map that you see here. the last shuttle buses to the city will leave in about 30 minutes.

we want to go to live look at the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station where people started showing up three hours to several hours ago to get a seat. passengers will be dropped off in san francisco near the transbay terminal on howard street and return trips will leave from the transbay terminal between 3 and 7:00 p.m. in what is only expected to be a rough afternoon commute as well. we have been talking to commuters waking up at the crack of dawn to get in line for the ferry. ktvu, claudine wong in alameda where some riders are worried they won't get a seat and as you have been talking about, that includes the ride home as well. >> reporter: yes, it could be a tougher ride home than it is in. i wanted to show you what's on the water this morning. here comes the next boat and we are seeing an army of boats coming through here to pick up folks. one left for south city. there it is actually just wrapping around and heading people over there. let me show you the line waiting for the boats to come in. it's actually looking pretty good. starts there and wraps right

around here before it comes to a stop. we have seen it much longer throughout the morning, especially the first boat that came about 6:00 this morning. let's show you video of the boat as it left the terminal. when that boat came, we found people who had been waiting in line for a couple of hours, because they wanted to make sure they got on the o -- on the boat and didn't have to wait in line for the next boat. we found ferry riders, b.a.r.t. riders and drivers who said the b.a.r.t. strike changed their day, it cost them more and made them get up earlier. >> you have to get up an hour earlier, but it's getting home that's a problem. it's not so much getting in in the morning, it's getting out of the city and back. have you ever looked at the lines of the terminal in the embarcadero. if you're not there by 2:30, you're out of luck going home. >> reporter: and you know why he knows that, because we have been through that before in july. you're looking at video from

the san francisco terminal from the 4 day july strike when the lines indeed were very very long for people to try to get home. and it made for a very very frustrating day, so obviously that's the fear today. coming back out here live to alameda, i want to show you the boats passing each other as the next ferry comes in. we have two different ferries, one that goes to the ferry building and one to south city. we have seen them go in and out of here, quickly so the line hasn't had time to grow as the morning wears on. as we pan to the left, we want to show you how we know that this is a very popular morning nonetheless and that is because this is the overflow parking lot and we have seen people having to drive onto the dirt. the parking lots are full. the overflow parking is full and people have told us that's what they're seeing. they're making a very very long walk to get to the end of the line which is now right here, and as they do that and as the line grows, it's not actually too bad. again, this is probably the shortest we have seen it this morning, and the next boat is

coming right away, so maybe we are just getting better at getting in when we don't have b.a.r.t., but certainly commuters not happy. they would like their regular mode of transportation back as soon as possible. live here in alameda, claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. thank you. ac transit buses are taking many more passengers than usual across the bay as well. janine de la vega joins us live from a bus stop in oakland, and what does it look like out there? >> reporter: well, there is a long line, it's probably about 50 or 60 people deep. i want to show you it. it's not as bad as it was the last time around we had a strike. at this time around 7:30. it was going all the way around the corner. it's not doing that just yet. i wanted to let you know that buses have been coming here every 15 minutes here at 20th 20th and broadway to shuttle people to san francisco. normally they come every half hour, but extra buses are being

used. now, here we should go to footage of earlier rides, boarding the ac transit buses. the transit agency is using as many extra buses as it can. two extra buses are dedicated to the 20th street stop to transport people to the city. they will continue to go back and forth for the morning commute. a spokesperson told me they're deapplying additional buses based on -- deploying additional buses based on demand. so far the wait hasn't been more than 15 to 30 minutes. i want to talk to one of the commuters standing in line. this is corey hawkins in oakland. this is your first time doing this. how long have you been waiting. >> about 15 to 20 minutes. >> not too bad. >> it hasn't been as bad as i thought it would be. >> reporter: what are you expecting for your afternoon commute back. >> i'm not sure. i'll get to the office and find out what options i have. >> reporter: thank you so much.

something else i also want to point out that we have seen here going on. we have seen several cars pull up and just out of the kindness of their heart, asked if anybody wanted to hop a ride, and actually offered a car pool out here. also, i do want to mention, there is a sheriff's deputy from alameda county that's been walking the line going up and down, making sure that nobody is cutting in line. they were worried about that because that happened the last time around. so something else that is encouraged. anybody who's getting on these buses should be using clipper cards or trying to use the exact fares, because the bus drivers don't make change. here live, you can see this bus coming and again, about a 15 minute wait. things seem to be flowing smoothly here. we'll continue to monitor this for mornings on 2. reporting live from oakland, janine de la vega ktvu. thank you. you also remember b.a.r.t.

has been training managers to run the trains in the event of another strike. last month, ktvu news reported the training was taking place at a warehouse at mare island. there are a dozen b.a.r.t. managers that are certified train operators, but it is not clear where that plan stands now with the strike a reality. but b.a.r.t. has said managers running trains could only provide limited service across the bay. a city council man steve glazer will be out gathering signatures for a petition to ban transit strikes today. he plans to be at the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station this morning asking commuters to sign a petition calling for legislation that would ban transit workers from walking off the job. glazer says transit workers in san francisco and cities across the nation are already prohibiting from striking. glazer is currently running far seat in the state assembly. time is 7:41. a recall alert for south san francisco, costcoshoppersshoppers, the

company has decided to pull more of its chicken. this is cooked chicken. we're taking the pulse of parking lots, especially where alternate transportation is involved. that story still ahead. and it's still pretty busy on the roads, although we're seeing a strange thing at the toll plaza, it's getting a little bit lighter at the actual toll plaza but getting there is another story. well, some fog has decided to return. it's getting late in the season. it's there. very shallow. it will play into a cooler forecast for some. i'll have that coming right up. i love having a free checked bag

welcome back. with b.a.r.t. on strike, many bay area commuters are looking for other ways to get to work. there are long lines at many

bay area ferries this morning. ktvu channel 2 reporter, tom vacar is live at the harper ferry this morning. how are the lines looking there. >> reporter: it's interesting, we went into the parking lot 15 minutes ago. there were plenty of cars in the parking lot and the reality is there were plenty of spaces left, so a lot of people have decided not to go to work or they have made other kinds of plans, telecommuting, folks can do that in many jobs, and recently, and i mean just in the last 15 minutes, we went across the richmond san rafael bridge, and going across that bridge, what we found out was that while traffic was certainly, there was a lot of it, it was moving along at a relatively good speed and when we got to the end of the bridge and got off to come here, traffic moved slowly but it kept on moving. this is going to get worse after time, and the reason it's going to get worse after time is that more and more people are going to be seeking these alternatives, but even in the

august 4th in oakland. her body was found 5 days later in vacaville. alana claims that he and coke planned to marry. the family said she had been helping him get his life together after being released from prison. time 7:46. there's a new development in the salmonella alert involving chicken. a costco recalling the rotisserie chicken, an additional 14,000 cooked chicken products that may be contaminated with a strain of salmonella. this is in addition to the 40,000 pounds of foster farms chicken recalled last week. the products subject to recall are kirkland, signature foster farms, rotisserie chicken. rotisserie chicken soup, leg quarters and salad. foster farms trying to repair its tarnished image, the outbreak has cut chicken sales by 25 percent. executives vowing to regain the

faith of its customers. the company says it's taking additional steps to ensure safety and they include intensive sanitizing of work surfaces and equipment, plus vaccination against the strain of salmonella. time is 7:47. the last thing you need right now is an accident, especially on the bridges this morning. let's go to sal who's keeping an eye on things. is there any problems out there. >> there are not that many but we have had a lot of slow traffic brian and pam. good morning once again. i want to show you something peculiar. this is a look from news chopper 2 at highway 24 and 580 leading up to the bay bridge. we're going to follow news chopper 2 as he moves around and looks at the line on highway 24 at 580 and leads to the bay bridge. you can go faster than you would. this is the 58024 interchange. there's the line. things have been improving a little bit. there it is. it's not nearly as bad as it was a little while ago. the crush of the morning commute came between 6:30 and

7:30. there still is a line and as he moves over, this is 580 moving from left to right. there's 580 and now he's moving up to the mcarthur maze. you see definite improvement here at the toll plaza. so waiting around did pay off for some of these people. and look at the toll plaza, it's getting better, so the waiting is, and i think this is a friday thing. friends have told me, heck with it, they're working from home today and that may be happening in mass. let's move long and look at 680. still slow from concord to walnut creek, and also into danville. thank you sir. a little change here. sunny for most, but there are areas of fog. brandon, pacifica sent me a picture, steve the fog is back, and mount davidson, he says i can see the fog flowing like a river below. some of the fog is there. it's not making much of a push inland.

it is on the marin, near petaluma, reports of fog and a little bit around the bay. coast fog has returned and there's a lot out there. it's making more of a north south push than west to east. it will be warm inland, the jet stream, tropical storm track stays to the north. however, maybe -- stays to the north. and too much fog, a little west wind. 24 for tahoe, 39 ukiah. there have been some 30s. nevada, other locations and monterey 46. a couple days ago they were 63 at this time. you can see the fog. there's plenty there. and yesterday was patchy. a system north of the hawaiian islands, this low showing signs coming under the path of least resistance. may be here next thursday. 38 santa rosa. 40s, much colder this morning. walnut creek 42. a few 50s. san francisco 50. down about 8 or 9 from

yesterday. sunny inland, but the fog is playing into a cooler forecast coast and also bay. some is very thick. visibility can be lousy. 60s, 70s and low 80s. not much of a change inland. the days are getting so short and the angle of the sun is, you may hit that 80, 81 for 2 or 3 minutes and back off. 60s and 70s: and very low 80s for some. santa cruz coming down big time. 60s or 70s. mainly out of the 80s on the peninsula. looks like this pattern will hold the few 80s inland and coast and bay are going to drop a little bit. looks okay until the middle of next week we might see changes. 7:51 is the time. pretty exciting. google just reached a major milestone minutes ago. shares topped a thousand dollars each. we'll talk about the reason for the jump. also, tunnel vision, ktvu news gets an upclose look at a big water project that's actually under the bay.

welcome back to mornings on 2 more on the b.a.r.t. strike. you're taking a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza this morning. a pretty stop to right in the middle there. more cars on the road today because b.a.r.t. workers are on the picket line today. trains stopped running early this morning leaving hundreds of thousands of bay area commuters scrambling for another way to work and the people who drive to work have extra company out there. today's strike came after a marathon bargaining session that lasted nearly 30 hours. it abruptly ended late yesterday. the unions and b.a.r.t. management agreed that the two sides were close to an agreement. most of the economic issues, but there is apparently one sticking point, the talks broke down. no new talks are scheduled. keeping an eye on wall street, google and its investors have a thousand reasons to smile this morning. for the first time ever, shares of google topped a thousand dollars each.

analysts credit strong 3rd 3rd quarter earnings. shares jumped 12% when the markets opened. economists say while the prices are declining, they are being offset by a larger number clicking on adds. gavin newsom is getting involved in efforts to legalize marijuana in california. crafting a ballot measure before voters in 2016. the campaign comes after voters in washington state and colorado legalized marijuana last year. newsom says the aclu panel will study how washington state and colorado implemented their laws and hold forums for the public and policy makers. washington state and colorado are the only two states that have legalized marijuana for recreational use. here in california, though, and more than a dozen other states, marijuana is legal for medicinal use. a group of immigration advocates in san francisco blocked a bus filled with people on their way to be deported

protesters surrounded the bus last night outside the san francisco offices of immigration and customs enforcement. the protest blocked traffic at a samsung and washington for two hours. it ended with san francisco police escorted the protesters away. they say it's part of a national movement to pressure president obama to stop deportations. a worker suffered serious injuries while trying to move a large rock at a home in the oakland hills. officials say a crew in one truck was trying to slide the rock down an incline. the first truck lost traction and it hit another truck, pinning a man between the two trucks and the rock. that man was taken to a highland hospital with nonlife threatenings injuries. ktvu news got a look at a water project in the bay area. it runs under the floor of the bay from new ark to menlo park. it runs 124 feet below. bay. seismic safety is one of the main goals of this $286 million

project. now, the pipeline is designed to sway up to 7 feet in the event of a major earthquake. engineers say the project is six months ahead of schedule and water should be flowing through the pipeline late next year. the san francisco giants have approached pitcher lipscomb about a new contract. the award winner is ready to accept offers from other teams. say it ain't so. timmy. this is video of lipscomb against the padres earlier this year. we love the giants, though. he can become a free agent after the end of the world series. lipscomb is a native of seattle and the they ares are among the teams interested -- mariners are among the teams interested in signing him. >> coming up at 8:00 and we are talking about the bay area facing a commute crisis. we are continuing with our live team coverage of the b.a.r.t. strike and the huge impact its having on traffic. and spaces running out as we speak on board those charter buses that are taking people

we have changes here, thick fog. probably won't amount to anything. it is a sign of a cooler pattern. sunny and warm this week until today. that included the coast. not now, the fog has come back. there could be thick fog. we had an easterly breeze almost the entire week. it's turned westerly or southwesterly. so 60s and 70s by the coast. still some upper 70s to near 80 well inland. coast and bay fog clear away, though, but it is colder this morning. mostly sunny, nice to mild and warm. cooler bay, but it will be good. inland, temperatures in the 70s, 80s. 30s, 40s, 50s and much much cooler than they have seen the last couple of mornings. lose the easterly breeze, you got a westerly wind. instead of 80, 74. and still not bad. a little bit of fog, it will burn off fast. fog, sun, nice, cooler coast and bay. mild to warm inland. temperatures though all over the map. we're getting a definite separation today. 60s by the beaches, 70s. and upper 70s.

low 80s inland. and sal with a busy morning. it has been super busy. just got off the phone with chp officer telling us that highway 37 the visibility is not good, dove tail into your weather report. use your headlights, low beams and allow extra following space. don't tailgate in that situation obviously or any situation. let's look at the bay bridge toll plaza, it is still backed up, so we're still looking at a 45 minute delay getting into san francisco, and that's because getting to the bay bridge toll plaza itself is going to be slow on 80, popular. but also on some of the other freeways as well. we want to look at nimitz freeway as you drive into hayward, southbound 880 is slow. heading out past the san mateo are bridge. westbound 82, a minor accident, and even there things are improving as i look back on the east bay as a whole. the heavier traffic is on 880 northbound getting into

downtown oakland. let's look at the south bay with a live look at downtown san jose and that is a nice looking commute, right through downtown, which is somewhat unusual for this time of mortgage. 8:02. -- morning. 8:02, let's go back to the desk. >> the worst fierce of 400,000 daily b.a.r.t. riders now a reality this morning. b.a.r.t. workers are on strike again. the entire transit system is shut down for the second time in three months and at this point, no new talks are scheduled. trains stopped running early this morning leaving hundreds of thousands of people scrambling for others ways to get to work and facing a tough commute on the road as well. one b.a.r.t. union leader spoke out a few hours ago. he says the two sides were very close to a deal when the talks broke down. but in the last minutes, and the last part of the bargaining, b.a.r.t. sort of did what we call a switch. they came up with a poison pill to say yes, we have reached in concept agreement on economics which were the main issues earlier that b.a.r.t. was focusing on, and we were

focusing on, but now we have to change your contract, we have to change work rules. today's strike came after a marathoning bargaining session lasting 30 hours. we do hope to hear from b.a.r.t. management later this hour. we also have video of east bay b.a.r.t. workers walking off the job early this morning at the hayward train yard. b.a.r.t. employees were seen leaving work at the end of their shift before 2:00 this morning and grabbing picket signs. they went on strike and they have supplies ready for others to join them. as you can imagine, people have been finding other ways to get to work and school this morning. we have live team coverage. ktvu's david stevenson is live in san francisco where people are car pooling. we begin with alex savage where the last charter bus of the city just left the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. alex. >> reporter: well, actually i want to let you know, actually, that bus is about to leave. the last one of the morning set to leave from the walnut creek

b.a.r.t. station. it's right here behind me. still a few seattles available, if you want to hurry on down here to the walnut creek station, you can probably get a ride to the city. one of many charter buses taking people directly from a number of b.a.r.t. stations around the east bay into san francisco this morning, but again, this is the last one of the o morning i'm told by the manager here working on scene. there was an early morning rush for these charter buses. people started lining up at 4 this morning to be sure they would be able to grab a seat. space is limited. a total of 140 buses have been used to pick people up from a handful of east bay b.a.r.t. stations and they are taking commuters directly into the city. there are no stops. they were stopping during the last b.a.r.t. strike in july at the west oakland station. those buses will get about 6000 people a day where they need to go. that's really just a drop in the bucket, though. a lot of people say they have been through this before, during the last strike and they can't understand why the two sides couldn't work out a deal. i'm really frustrated right

now. i mean, why can't people just everybody settle down right now. i mean, this is the second time i had to go through this. you know, i mean, it's ridiculous. i just wish that the unions and b.a.r.t. management would just settle this. >> out here in central contra costa. we're completely b.a.r.t. dependent as far as getting into the interior bay area. so this is all we can come up with. >> reporter: now, here's a look at the 9 east bay b.a.r.t. stations where b.a.r.t. is offering charter bus service throughout this strike, as long as it goes. but the service for the morning time began, it wraps up around this time, around 8:00 in the morning. but again, here at the walnut creek station where we are, one last charter bus with a few seats still available on board, but you want to get down here early, a lot of folks lining up very early this morning to get on board these buses and the manager here at this station actually told me that they have about 140 buses trying to get

people into san francisco, but he says if the strike goes on for a number of days, possibly another week or so, they're going to look to add more buses potentially. live this morning in walnut creek, alex savage ktvu. thank you. now, there are also alternatives for commuters in the east bay not heading to san francisco. county connection will run a small number of buses between the concord b.a.r.t. station and 20th and broadway in oakland and a few buses running between downtown oakland and the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. and the wheels bus system is also adding service from the dublin pleasanton b.a.r.t. station to oakland as well. but despite the transit comes it appears that frustrations are starting to rise among people going to work this morning. for many the commute is taking longer than normal today. david stevenson live in san francisco where some folks trying to eliminate the headaches it haded to car pool inside -- decided to car pool instead. >> reporter: we're seeing a steady stream of casual car

poolers. you can see some across the street. these are essentially strangers helping other strangers into the city. they are offering up seats in the cars in exchange for a spot in the car pool lines. given the b.a.r.t. strike, we're hearing reports from the passengers about more people in the east bay are offering space up in their cars to meet the demand. once in traffic, passengers are reporting to us different experiences and getting over the bridge and getting here to the city. >> oh, traffic was absolutely horrible. absolutely horrible. it took me an hour 45 minutes to get here. >> reporter: did you notice longer lines coming in from fairfield for casual car pooling. >> there was more cars picking up but the traffic was just horrible all the way through. >> we take the transbay bus but it was a bit late. we wanted to make sure we got here in time. >> reporter: what was the experience like this morning doing this. >> really easy. >> our driver was there early

enough that we got in and out and it was lick split. >> reporter: just a block away from where i'm standing at howard and fremont is the transbay terminal which you see there. i checked in with them to get a sense of the long lines of commuters boarding the ac buses to get to the east bay. one manager told me that the lines are 50% longer than a typical friday morning. the sense is that it could be just as bad this evening as well, too, when people are leaving the city and beginning to head back from san francisco to the east bay. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson ktvu channel 2 news. ac transit using as many extra buses as it can to get commuters from the east bay into san francisco. ktvu's janine de la vega is in oakland with how long riders are having to wait in line. >> reporter: yeah, you know, this is surprising. there is no line here at this popular bus stop.

we're here at 20th andway, and literally, i'm -- broadway, and literally i'm counting about 8 people standing here in line. that's because buses have been coming every 15 minutes to shuttle people from oakland to san francisco. normally they come every half hour. extra buses are being used. now let's go to footage of what it looked like earlier this morning. here are some early risers boarding those ac transit buses. the transit agency is using as many extra buses as it can. so far, there has been two extra buses that have been dedicated to the 20th street stop in oakland to transport people to the city. they're going to continue going back and forth for the morning commute. other buses are also being detoured that aren't full that normally don't make stops in the city. a spokesperson told me they have been deploying additional buses based on demand sort of on the fly here. buses have been filling up quickly. the wait time is 15 to 30

minutes. now i want to talk to one of the commuters. your reaction to this, i mean. >> shock, disbelief. last year or earlier this year when the b.a.r.t. went on strike, the lines were around the corner, down to the paramount, so i'm shocked that there's no line. but i'm pleased. >> reporter: did you come here earlier than normal. >> no, actually today was a little normal than i would have come. but even when i came last time, it was still like i said around the corner, so i'm really happy that i don't have to wait too long. >> reporter: but on monday, are you maybe expecting something different. >> yeah, i am because this is friday so i think a lot of employers are letting employees work from home. monday may be a different story. hopefully b.a.r.t. will be back on by then. >> reporter: thanksthanks so much kristaal for talking to us. and i want to show you video that we took earlier this

welcome back to mornings on 2. keeping track of the b.a.r.t. strike and the commute this morning. we want to take you inside to the area where people are trying to keep the traffic moving this morning with all the extra cars on the road. we have somebody we're going to get to that in just a moment. it's pretty interesting. we have somebody in the caltrans management office. we'll check on that in just a moment. and a long morning for people trying to take the ferry instead of b.a.r.t. they say today they had to get up earlier, dig deeper to find a seat on the ferry. claudine wong is in alameda, and has been there this morning. it's been pretty crowded. >> reporter: yes, we have seen a steady flow of people. i want to show you the line

right now. that's the front of the line as we stretch all the way back, you can see folks at the back end of the line, we are very hopeful they will get on the ferry that is just pulling up right now. ernest sanchez who is the spokesperson for the san francisco bay ferry joining me live,. >> we have a boat pulling up now and that boat carries 199 passengers and it will take everybody in this line. >> they have been filling it up to the max, not leaving anybody behind if they don't have t. how has the morning been going. >> so far it's been a friday light. a little bit lighter than a normal weekday. we are carrying more people than we normally carry of course. we carry 6000 people on a weekday on average and during the peek of the july strike, we carried 19,000 plus. i don't think we'll make 19,000 today. it's yet to be seen but we are doing very well. things are smooth and the boats are on time. >> reporter: you were saying next week may be the big test. people taking the day off. >> it is friday.

though the line is long, they have been coming in fairly steady to pick the folks up, and the overflow parking may be a bigger issue for everyone. hopefully they get to their destination and get home easily. live in alameda, claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. time is 8:18. let's go to sal keeping an eye on traffic obviously. how are the bridges shaping up this morning. >> i want to tell you something about the trend i've seen. in july, i think this was a lot worse. i think this time, second time around, people figured it out, and right now, things are getting better. to answer your question, brian, the bridges are getting slightly better. look at bay bridge. we're seeing much of o an improvement to the toll plaza. some of the freeways have improved quite a bit. we will see improvement now, and if you have been waiting around, someone tweeted me and i haven't gotten back to her. hopefully she's watching. what time did it get better last time, and last time it got

better far later. of course those were weekdays. last time it got better at 10 or 11. right now it's getting better, here it is 8:00 and things are already improving. northbound 880 is beginning to look normal. slow traffic like it normally looks getting into oakland at this time. if you're crossing the san mateo bridge, westbound 92 traffic is moderate. 101 is slow. and south san francisco, we definitely see more traffic on the peninsula. not only on northbound 101 but also on northbound 280 through daily city, getting into the city that way. 8:20. let's go to steve. the twitter nation is alive and well this morning, and thank you to the ladies isn'ting great weather information -- sending great weather information. a couple reports coming from petaluma and joyce in the sunset district says foggy, foggy, some locations, sunny a couple blocks away or if you get the fog, you could be cold. it's cold for almost everybody

welcome back to mornings on 2. we continue our coverage of the b.a.r.t. strike this morning, and this is interesting, something that you might not have thought about, but this is an inside look at the people keeping traffic moving this morning with all the cars, the extra cars on the road today. this is a live picture inside the caltrans traffic management center right here in oakland.

caltrans have extra crews to respond to clear any accidents because as brian mentioned earlier, boy, if an accident happened today, it's really going to be a bigger impact than on a normal day. they are updating traffic times on the electronic highway signs that we see, and they are coordinating extra tow service if there is a problem, especially on the bridges. well, time now is 8:24. with b.a.r.t. not running, many people who don't normally drive to work are climbing into their cars this morning. traffic heavier on all bay area bridges as a result. ktvu channel 2 report e tom vacar has been driving around and joins us from the golden gate bridge this morning. how is the traffic out there. >> we have something remarkable. people got ate as of this back in -- taste of this back in july, and there is actually no back up at the wide open golden gate tolls. in fact, it took us 15 minutes to make the mad dash at limit from the ferry to the golden

gate tolls. just 15 minutes. whatever adaptations commuters make coming east on the 80 did not require many to take the 580 east to the 101 south safety valve route. now, b.a.r.t. says regardless of that, the clock is ticking on even the deal that the unions rejected. >> this is a 12% package that will be retro active back to july 5th if voted on and passed by the union by october 27th. after that date, the package we're offering will no longer be retroactive. >> reporter: so very light, mostly due to the folks either willing to brave the bay bridge traffic, which has been challenging or use create alternatives or stay or work from home. but monday, i guarantee will be a completely different day. no friday light, tom vacar o ktvu channel 2 news. >> no question about that tom. thank you very much.

the bay bridge toll plaza where certainly throughout the morning traffic has been heavy. it goes down every now and then. traffic is pretty light as well as you saw tom vacar just a few minutes ago on the golden gate bridge saying that traffic from the terminal to the golden gate bridge took him 15 minutes. more cars on the road this morning, we'll keep you updated during the first day of the b.a.r.t. strike. >> it's good to hear from everybody. if you can tweet or facebook, let us know how your commute is going. good to hear. i'm pam cook in for tori campbell today. >> good morning everybody i'm brian flores in for dave clark but meteorologist steve paulson always here. sure seems like it this week, that's for sure. a lot of fog has come back. not making too much of a push. some areas get the fog and if you do, it's a cold and foggy pattern. coast fog returns, came back in a big way. warm inland, not as warm. the coast and bay are going to cool down. the beaches definitely cooling

down. only subtle changes inland until the middle of next week. even san francisco and oakland down about a 5, 7 degrees from yesterday's low. there's a little bit of a westerly breeze. san francisco not the upper 70s to near 80. we'll go 68 today. a lot of low fog dancing around. 36 reno and 30s in the mendocino county. sacramento and monterey at 45 and 44. it's cool. it will be sunny unless you have the fog. it may take a while. cooler coast, some of the fog is very thick. temperatures back into the 60s for some on the coast. out of those 70s, but still 60s, 70s and now we get upper 70s. and still low 80s inland. good morning to you. getting a lot of questions about driving into the city, and the answer is if you are driving in to the city, it's getting better now and it should be good in the middle of the day, but getting out could be a problem as we go to the bay bridge, you can see it is much improved over what it was at 6:30 when it was backed up all the way onto 80, 580 and

24, and remember everyone's in the city with their car. they will have to get out at some point. think about that as you make your decisions. you can take ac transit. buses are leaving, we have been covering that angle of the story as well. and ferries, the ferry has gone rather smoothly this morning, especially compared to what happened last time. they just got more ferries online. let's go out and take a look at 92 to san mateo bridge. we have seen improvement as well as you drive on 92 and head to the peninsula. i want to show you the maps with the road sensors, it's improved a lot on 24. especially from marin, and also in oakland, and it's a little bit slow still on 880. 680 has cleared out from concord to walnut creek. things are beginning to clear out on this friday. it's 8:32. let's go back to the desk. well, it is the news we did not want to have to bring to you this friday morning. b.a.r.t. workers on strike the entire transit system shut down. now hundreds of thousands of commuters are scrambling to

find another way to work, to and from work, and people who drive typically are dealing with heavier traffic out on the roads. we have team coverage for you this morning, and we begin with tara moriarty who has some new comments from a b.a.r.t. spokesperson. >> reporter: rick rice just told us that b.a.r.t. was actually surprised that the unions pulled out of negotiations yesterday. he was very shocked by that. he said that they were making progress and that work rules, the sort of sticking point has always been a part of the negotiations. now, meanwhile down the street from us at lake merritt b.a.r.t. station, workers are picketing now after six months of negotiations and a cooling off period. the talks broke down yesterday afternoon at around 4, the federal mediator announced that his job was done and he couldn't get the two sides to agree. b.a.r.t. says they were close on wages and some other issues but not work rules. b.a.r.t.'s board president made a last minute plea saying

b.a.r.t. would be willing to up its last offer of $57 million. >> october 27th is when we would like them to take this to a vote and get back to us. the president reached out last night to union leadership. we did not hear back. certainly the general manager is here, and ready to reach out. we'll take calls and getting meetings set up. we need to get back in communications. >> we know that this process is difficult and hard, and we apologize and we urge the public to contact the b.a.r.t. district and tell them to finish negotiating a fair deal with our union because we want to sign a contract, workers want to go back to work and we want everyone to be able to get on with their lives. >> reporter: the union said b.a.r.t. wanted to change employees fixed work schedules. some people work a four hour work shift, others work a ten hour shift. the union said this could be a stress for workers with child care issues and b.a.r.t. says some people don't work a

full 40 hour workweek and they get overtime on their day off and that is draining the system. the general manager will be making a statement later today. we're not sure what time, we'll keep you posted. live in oakland, tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. and people have been taking charter buses this morning to get to san francisco. ktvu's alex savage is at the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station where last time we saw you that bus was about to take off. we understand the last charter bus just left. >> yeah, the last charter bus pulled out of the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station not long ago. and one woman walked up to us and was asking if another bus was coming. we had to give her the bad news and let her know there are no more buses being provided by b.a.r.t. this morning. the morning service into san francisco has wrapped up. let me show you video here if i can of that last charter bus as it pulled out of the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. it was half full, according to the manager here on scene. there was an early morning rush, though, for these charter

buses. people started lining up here before 4:00 this morning to make sure they would be able to snack a seat and get into san francisco. space of course is limited. about 140 buses are picking up from a handful of east bay b.a.r.t. stations this morning, and they will be doing the same thing long the strike is going on. and those buses are taking commuters directly into san francisco without stopping. those buses will be able to accommodate about 6000 commuters a day. now, a lot of people tell me they have been through it this before, during the last strike in july, and one man told me he's angry at b.a.r.t. workers for walking off the job. >> they have had weeks, months to come up with a solution. and they talk about respect, we're out here at 4:00 lined up waiting for a bus. we're the customers. they're affecting us socially. a lot of people have children, or they have jobs to get to on the other side of the county. they are impacting the city in a huge way. >> reporter: here's a map to let you know some of the

stations where b.a.r.t. is offering free shuttle bus service into san francisco. you can catch a bus between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. in the morning to get into san francisco. now as far as the afternoon commute goes, b.a.r.t. is offering charter bus service from downtown san francisco. those buses will begin picking up near the transbay terminal starting at 3:00 this afternoon. and i just got off the phone a couple of minutes ago actually with one commuter who hopped on board a charter bus at 6:45 this morning at walnut creek, heading to san francisco, wanted to get a sense of what his commute was like. a lot of traffic up to the bridge and getting across the bridge into san francisco, he told me, all told it took him just under an hour and a half this morning for that morning commute. live this morning in walnut creek, alex savage ktvu channel 2 news. thank you alex for that. you remember that b.a.r.t. has been training managers to run the trains in the event of another strike. last month, ktvu news reported that the training was taking

place at a warehouse at mare island. there are a dozen managers that are certified as train operators, others are working to get that certification. it's not clear where the plan stands right now with the strike now a reality. b.a.r.t. has said that misss running trains could only provide limited service around the bay. we'll be checking in on that. city council man steve glazer is gathering signatures to make sure the strike never happens again. this is new video from the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station this morning. he is asking commuters to sign a petition, calling for legislation that would ban transit workers from walking off the job. >> they can collectively bargain worker and management and try to work things out. if they can't work things out at the bargaining table, they can't make the riders responsible for their failure, they can't strike. >> glazer said transit workers in san francisco and big cities across the country are

prohibited from striking and he also says he has a lot of support from stranded commuters this morning. glazer currently running for a seat in the state assembly. new this morning, the port of oakland may be feeling some fall out from the b.a.r.t. strike. news chopper 2 flew overt port an hour ago and took this video. some b.a.r.t. workers picketed outside a maintenance facility for b.a.r.t. trains. that yard is located in the port. a handful of b.a.r.t. workers were at the entrance. police were called in to maintain the peace. no word of any major disturbances. firefighters are looking into the cause of a fire that damaged two homes in east palo alto last night. it started on lotus drive. two homes have significant fire and smoke damage. people inside smelled smoke and got out safely to see their homes go up in flames minutes later. >> we were in there watching television and laying around relaxing and then all of a sudden we smelled smoke, and

her son and her daughter came and said, hey, mom, get out, get out, get out. >> one firefighter suffered a minor injuries firefighterring the fire. well, the san mateo county district attorney is expected to make a major announcement today in the investigation into the asiana airlines crash. the da's office is set to announce whether it will charge a san francisco firefighter for a fatal accident that happened in the minutes after last july's crash. investigators say 49-year-old firefighter e lease duck et ran over and killed a plane crash survivor on the o tarmac at sfo. the 16-year-old girl was a student from china. coming up, a new statement from b.a.r.t., the message they're sending to passengers affected by the strike. and we're live in oakland, monitoring the commute for a b.a.r.t. riders who are taking ac transit. we'll tell you how it's been going so far. seeing a little bit of

improvement out there, and so i i checked my traffic sources. for example, getting into the south bay on 680 looks pretty good right now. we'll tell you where the trouble spots are on the morning commute. there will be lots of sunshine inland and most of the bay. there are pockets of thick fog which has not been here all week long. that will equal a cooler forecast. we'll have that for you coming up. welcome back to mornings on 2 and our continuing coverage of the b.a.r.t. strike. we are monitoring ac transit, one of the options b.a.r.t. riders were choosing this morning in place of the trains. ktvu's janine de la vega is live in oakland and how is it looking out there? >> reporter: well, traffic has really lightened up here at this ac transit bus stop, which is usually very busy. it was about an hour ago, but i want to show you here's a bus arriving right now. they have been arriving about every 10 minutes or so. there was about 30 people or so waiting in line. so not bad. that's what they have been trying to do, get the buses here quickly. here's some footage that we did take earlier this morning of some of the early risers that were boarding the ac transit buses. the transit agency is using as many extra buses as it can, two extra buses are dedicated to the 20th street stop in oakland to transport people to san

francisco. they have been detouring rapid buses that normally travel the freeway that aren't full to come get people at this 20th street at broadway to shuttle people to the city. buses have been filling up quickly but so far, the wait time hasn't been more than about 15 to 30 minutes. now, again, back out here live, you can see this bus is about to leave. they'll continue to do this shuttling until about 10:00 a.m. in the morning back and forth from oakland to the city. and then once it hits the afternoon, they're going to start this up again and start deploying extra buses. it depends on where the demand is in the city. ac transit, again, you know, it is going to be out here with staff members to help sort of direct people and let them know sort of what to do, and they say bring your clipper cards. that will make things go faster. reporting live from oakland, janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. now, within the last half hour, we heard from a b.a.r.t.

spokesperson. we asked her about reports that people have seen b.a.r.t. trains running this morning and also asked her if managers were preparing to drive the trains. >> you will actually see trains running today. they're exercising the system to keep the reps off the rail and those are operated by managers. we have managers that can run the trains. that is not part of our strike contingency plan. the board would have to approve that and there is to set agenda to do that. last month ktvu news reported that b.a.r.t. managers were training to become drivers. the training took place at a warehouse in mare island. there is a dozen managers certified as train operators. a man arrested in the murder of an oakland woman is second to be arraigned today. randy alana a registered sex offender was the last person seen with sandra coke before she disappeared in oakland. her body was found five days later. alana claims he and coke planned to marry. her family says they had a

brief relationship years ago and she had been helping him get his life together after being released from prison. time is 8:46. it has been a very busy day on the commute for many commuters out there. getting any better out there this morning. it is, a little bit. if you have been waiting it's been a good wait for you because traffic has improved a little bit. unfortunately, now there's a crash reported on the bridge westbound approaching treasure island, a motorcycle and a car. they managed to pull off to the right side. this is before treasure island. there's a shoulder now as you know, but the traffic is very slow. you can see how slow it is at the toll plaza. emergency crews are on the way. that could mess things up big time. things had been getting better on the bridge though. 880 northbound, traffic is moving along nicely with no major problems. i want to mention if you are driving in the east bay, 13 northbound getting up to 24 eastbound. that's very slow as well. people taking the roads and on 580, things have improved as

you drive into livermore valley. it is a nice drive. i want to mention that the traffic is going to be busy on 880. let's go to steve. thank you sal. patchy thick fog which has been gone the entire week. 80s on the coast a couple days ago. 88 in santa cruz. today about 74. a lot of fog going down the coast. just popped up. patchy fog filling in in a big way. next week the possibility of a change, in the form of this lull. a lot of tropical moisture, too. this will slowly work its way toward us. maybe by this time next week, might have a change in the weather pattern. 30s, 40s and 50s, but the lows were colder this morning. we have lost the easterly breeze and get more of a westerly breeze even though there isn't much of one. still sunny inland, and if you don't have the fog, might already be sunny. some made a good push.

cooler coast ask bay, still mild to warm inland. hazy sun. not much of a breeze on shore or offshore. it's more on shore. upper 80s for some. clear lake will go 83. 30s and 40s up into the lake county. upper 70s for petaluma. thick fog. kentfield 77. vallejo, richmond 70. 81 fairfield. 81 walnut creek. 70s now berkeley, oakland, alameda, san leandro, hayward, low 80s. these don't last long. days are getting extremely short and the angle of the sun is not very i. 60s on the coast. 70 along the embarcadero. 70s. 80s along the peninsula. not much change inland. high pressure will win out there. coast and bay dealing with night morning fog. so o 60s and 70s. there are new developments in the salmonella alert involving chicken. costco store? san francisco is expanding its

recall of foster farms rotisserie chicken. the costcois recalling an additional 14,000 cooked chicken products that may be contaminated with salmonella. this is in addition to the 40,000 pounds of foster farms chicken recalled last week. kirkland signature foster farms rotisserie chicken. rotisserie chicken soup, leg quarters and rotisserie chicken salad. coming up throughout the morning, we have shone you the gridlock on bay area roads and bridges. some commutes have taken twice if not three times longer than normal. how some folks tried to ease today's traffic nightmare. plus you get a really sweet bandaid! anything else i should know? here's a thought, try scoring more points on the other team. okay. even a warrior can get sick.

after a marathon bargaining session, talks abruptly ending late yesterday afternoon, even though both side have said that they were very close to an agreement when suddenly the talks broke down and from what we understand, no new talks are scheduled right now. as sal has been talking about all morning long, the b.a.r.t. strike also affecting traffic of course this morning because instead of driving, some people are taking part in ride shares, so hopefully that will take the cars off the road. david stevenson in san francisco with that part of the story. good morning david. >> reporter: good morning, well, commuters have been through this before in july, so they know they have a variety of ways to get to the city. take a look. we have seen a number of continuous flow of cars coming off into the city here. casual car poolers here at howard and fremont streets. some regular car poolers from the east bay told me they had showed up early because they were anticipating longer waits

for rides car pooling in, but they said there seemed to be a lot more cars making seats available as well, too. a block away from where i'm standing at the transbay terminal, we have seen some lines for buses down for the east bay. for the most part, things seem to be calm, though. a spokesperson tells me the crowds this morning were 50% bigger than on a typical friday morning. and there are buses chartered by b.a.r.t. also arriving right here where i'm standing here in the city. riders we spoke to praised b.a.r.t. management for providing them, though they said there is some confusion about what they need to do to be able to catch them this morning and later this afternoon. do people have a sense of where they need to go to catch these buses coming and going this afternoon. >> a lot of people do not. we have to inform them that number one, they will need the return ticket. if they don't have that, they will not be able to ride the bus back. two, they're not familiar with the drop off point, they're not familiar with howard, between

fremont and they don't know how close it is. we have to explain it to them. >> i went through this the last time in july. it's an inconvenience because i had to leave at 6:30 instead of 8:00 when i would normally leave and used to take me 25 minutes to get here, and it's taken me an hour. >> reporter: and just about 10 minutes ago, i checked in with muni to get assents of what they're seeing in -- get a sense of what they're seeing in terms of demand on their system. it's unclear by what percentage the ridership has increased. they hope to have that in the next half hour. they wanted to let people know parking is available in city sponsored lots and have added buses and hoping that will absorb commuters that would take part this morning and looking to get around the city once they have arrived here. reporting live in san francisco. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. all right. david, thank you very much. time now 8:56. it has been a very busy morning

on the morning commute. now we're going to transition into what the commute's going to look like in the afternoon. i don't know if you have any answers there. >> pam you don't sound optimistic. >> fridays are tough anyway. >> i'm with you pam, i'm giving you grief. you know that. traffic is going to be busy. i want to show the south bay. we have a bunch of minor crashes on 85 northbound at fremont. even though this is not due to the b.a.r.t. strike, i don't think it is anyway, we have slow traffic there. i want to get to the main part of the commute, though, and that would be the san mateo bridge, the bay bridge and the richmond bridge, taking a lot of extra drivers across the bay. san mateo doesn't look that bad. bay bridge toll plaza is improving with the accident, the motorcycle was minor, on the shoulder before treasure island. getting out is going to be tough. hopefully it will be staggered but a lot of people have their cars in the city today, so plan accordingly. let's go to steve. still sunny inland today, temperatures upper 70s near 80.
