this to the b.a.r.t. board and general manager about 4:45 p.m. this afternoon, and i learned from someone at b.a.r.t. they are going to respond, they are going to have a news conference in the next half hour. wyle get their side of this. if b.a.r.t. were to agree to this it would be an tend to perhaps one of their longest negotiations in their history and one of the shortest strikes. the question is whether they will accept this. that is something we hope to hear within the next hour. jana katsuyama, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the roads are clogged tonight as everyone heads home for the weekend. sal castaneda following the traffic impact of the b.a.r.t. strike. >> good afternoon. right now we have very slow traffic leaving san francisco. it is backed up on 101. yes, it is busier than it would

be on a normal friday. sometimes on fridays we see let up, right now we are not seeing that. mcather maze traffic is slow. people who are using the bay bridge are not normal bay bridge drivers and there is a back up in the cash lanes but the fast track lanes are moving okay. highway 24 eastbound, we -- traffic is slow there and on north bound 680. back to the desk. >> thank you. ktvu's tom vacar with a closer look at the work rules in question and maybe sled light on the -- shed light on the letter. >> reporter: i can guarantee you that b.a.r.t.

will treat this letter the same way it treated the letter yesterday, thanks but no thanks. what has been on the table has been there all the time. there is no surprises there. here is why. >> reporter: enough of this controversy. >> the unions decided -- if they wanted to take the money but not the work rules. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. insists it wanted more flexibility in managing the system. >> operators only complete tw round trips a day and 30 minutes of miscellaneous work. they work 55% of their 8 hour shifts. >> reporter: the unions complained such proposals as paying over time after the employee worked over 40 hours changing the time, location andle of shifts and getting rid

of customs without approval unfair. >> new set of demands that dismantle our contract. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. insists all the issues were raised from the get-go, six months ago and the savings justify the money, spension healthcare offers and -- pensions and healthcare offers. >> we are on strike till we have a deal. >> that is what happens when both sides paint themselves into corners. no reason to believe there will be any change in b.a.r.t.'s attitude at 6:30 p.m. and no reasons the unions will change their attitudes. the public is the one that is not being served. reporting live, tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. >> b.a.r.t. strike prompted commuters to line up to head home for the

weekend. ktvu's david stevenson is live at the transbay terminal where a.c. transit buses have been busy. david? >> reporter: the demand for the buses wasn't as strong as during july's strike. look behind me. at peak point it stretched down to the corner here but that was as of 3:50 p.m. this afternoon. >> reporter: we witnessed a number of conversations. unsure of what bus they should board. a.c. transit doesn't have the numbers today but buses were standing room only during the morning and as well into the evening commute. they say they usually get 2-300 calls over the course of a day

but today they got 500 calls in 5 hours. just two blocks away casual carpoolers began lining up. officials tried to warn folks it might be more difficult to find a way back but passengers said catching a ride was surprisingly easy. >> shorter. like usually the line is back there. so it is short. >> everyone else is moving. we are just stuck here today. >> reporter: why do you think? >> the strike. it is effecting certain parts of the carpool. not all parts. >> it was good but this is peak hours. i only waited waited for 15 minutes. it is like every man for itself. >> reporter: caltrans is reported a 30% increase on traffic on the bay bridge

accident is how the district attorney described the death. the student survived the crash but killed after being crushed by a fire truck responding to the scene. >> the young woman at the time was covered in foam. there was no way the driver of the vehicle was going to be able to truly see that there was anybody there. >> reporter: the fire chief issued a statement this afternoon saying the department explores areas where improvements can be made and if not for the operations that were conducted it is likely there would have been a greater loss of life. he said this was a tragic accident that never should have happened. >> firefighter whose knew that the girl was there on the ground outside the airplane failed to take care of her. they didn't examine her

the killing of sandra coke. sandra coke and randy alana dated in the past. randy alana is due in court monday morning. bike rider killed in san francisco this morning after colliding with a muni bus at 8:45 a.m. this morning. a spokesperson for muni says a bus with 3 dozen passengers on board was traveling down 11th 11th and about to turn at the time of the collision. police and muni say it is unclear if the driver had a green light. the bus is equipped with a camera and foodage has been handed over to the police department -- footage has been handed over to the police department. contra costa county officials say two more people tested positive for west nile. they were likely infected by mosquitos. and a dead bird tested

to be on the verge of leaving. >> reporter: wasn't that loping ago the san jose police department was grateful to have 40 more officers but now according to the union, the number of recruits -- the number of recruits is dwindling fast. 40 grads received pins from the san jose police department after months of training to become officers but at the time we reported they predicted many new officers would leave soon because according to the union the departments cuts in pensions and benefits. sources told ktvu one officer already left for morgan hill, two committed to hayward. two are going through the application process to join hayward where the assistant chief is now chief. 12 others are known to be at various stages of background

checks with other department. >> discouraging to know they are walking out the door for other agents. it is a problem that has to be addressed. a problem that is causing san jose not to be safe. >> reporter: the mayor and the police chief dispute the numbers saying the number departing is less. san jose's department has less than a thousand officers, 300 less than a few years ago. an update tonight on the 10:00 p.m. news. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. the city of pleasant hill is considering beefing up its ordinance on fire arms and

ammunition sales. the city counsel was scheduled to hear it monday night at city hall. >> tenants at a apartment building that went up on flames yesterday today went back to the buildings. the fire gutted much of the 75 unit apartments. today residents were able to retrieve some items. no one was seriously hurt in the fire and the cause is under investigation. a oyster farm filed a petition in its fight to stay open. they are seeking an injunction to remain in business while its lawsuit proceeds. the farm is facing eviction. the national parks service wants to turn it into a marine wilderness area. fog back at the coast.
