welcome. it's saturday october 19th. >> good morning. rosemary has a quick peek at that saturday forecast. good morning. >> yes. we are going to hold onto our pleasant weather through your weekend. it's a chilly start if you are stepping out early this morning. upper 30s to upper 40s around the bay and along the coast. patches of fog this morning as well. we will see mostly sunny throughout the afternoon with a little change in the temperatures, a cooldown in the extended forecast. i will have that extended forecast for you. ly have your numbers for today. where we are seeing the patches of fog and who seeing the coldest weather coming up. >> it's day two of the latest bart strike and there are no indications that it's going to end any time soon. transit officials are warning that for the future, commutes will take longer than normal. we are live at the bart station. i can see striking workers continuing to picket. >> reporter: that's right. workers are on strike and the union members pledged to

maintain a picket line downtown oakland until a new contract is in place. as you just said there is no sign of that happening any time soon. in the maven time bart riders are stuck with a more complicated com mute. bart has charter buses running from nine stations, from the el sorito, concord, haywood and fremont stations. these buses are free and they go directly into san francisco. you don't have to worry about transferring. the first bus left at the west oakland station at six. there were only about ten people on board. many of them said they work weekends, they can't work from home. some work from hotels, others work in the restaurants. th they said the buses were the only way to get to their jobs. they are only running in the

morning hours, then this afternoon charter buses will go from the transbay terminal back to the same stations, nine stations in the east bay. there is a way for bart passengers to get back into the city this morning and to come back to the east bay later this afternoon but it's very limited for now. live in oakland. >> and with no bart trains running other agencies are adding service. both ac transit and the ferry reported jumps in rider ship. the bay ferry said it has more than double the average number of passengers yesterday. it ran 12 vessels instead of its usual eight. tonight's cal football game is one of many events affected by the strike. fans are being encouraged to carpool. they can also ride a cal bear shuttle bus. it takes fans from the downtown berkeley bart station, the rock ridge station ohrt berkeley amtrak station. tickets cost eight dollars a

person. another event is the nike women's marathon in san francisco tomorrow. it's the scene from last year's race, 30,000 people have signed up to run this year marking the 10th anniversary of the marathon. proceeds support the fight against luke luke. the strike is forcing saint anthony's to put out a call for volunteers. a large part of their volunteer base lives in the east bay and with trains not running volunteers say can't serve 3,000 meals in the dining room. they are putting the call out asking people to come volunteer. shifts are from 9:15 to 1:45 all weekend and into next week. we have created tools on the website to help you get around this weekend as well as next week if the strike persists. > a 2-year-old hit by a stray bullet is in critical but stable condition this morning. police say it happened about one in the afternoon yesterday.

that's when a gun fight broke out. the boy was hit by a stray bullet as he played in the front yard of his home two blocks away. nobody else was hurt and no arrests have been made. >> you can't keep quiet. you have to come forward. this needs to stop. there is to many children dying in this town. >> this is just the latest incident of gun violence involving children in oakland. five children under the age of eight have been shot and killed since 2011. police are investigating how a bus hit and killed a bicyclist in san francisco. that accident happened just before nine in the morning as the bikist was turning right. the driver is cooperating with the investigation and has been tested for drugs and alcohol. nobody on the bus was hurt. >> we are talking to everybody that we can and work with the police department to do that. we are hearing conflicting reports so it's to early to say what happened. >> the last time there was an accident was in 2010, four bicyclists have been hit and killed in san francisco this

year. >> there are new questions this morning about the case of a woman found dead in the stair well at san francisco general hospital. the body of the 57-year-old was found two and a half weeks after she disappeared. according to the san francisco chronicle an orderly reported seeing a woman passed out in a stair well one week before. the hospital contacted the sheriff's department but it is unclear if a deputy checked out that area. her family has now hired an attorney to represent them in the investigation into her death. today a safety meeting will be held in berkeley to talk about several robberies near the cal campus. police say the latest happened tuesday morning. two armed men robbed a student walking near north gate and university drive. the student wasn't hurt. the campus police say this was the 5th robbery or attempted robbery near campus in less than a week. a community meeting starts at two at good shepherd church. >> new, the president outlines

his vision now that the government shut down is over. >> now that the clouds of crisis have lifted, we need to focus on what the majority of americans sent us here to do, grow the economy, create good jobs. >> the president highlighted three areas that need to be addressed to serve the american people. he said lawmakers need to create a balanced and responsible approach to the economy that will shrink long term deficits. he also wants them to fix the immigration system and he said a farm bill must be passed to help rural communities grow and develop. analysts say the budget battle in washington has made a rift with in the republican party wider and deeper. lawmakers supporting the tea party are angry that the house speaker agreed to a plan to open the government. group was the tea party say they will endorse challengers

to republican lawmakers who voted for the deal. ted cruz hasn't ruled out another shut down. barbara boxer wants to eliminate the debt ceiling as a baring chip so she is proposing a bill to let the president raise the limit. so far there is not much support for it. even the white house said the authority to raise the debt ceiling rests with congress. . >> the white house will be opening its s to public doors. thre will resume on november 5th but only on a limited basis. thre were canceled in march after mandatory budget cuts but they are back now that a new spending plan has been approved. the white house will be open to tourists three days a week. the most diverse college in

first man arrested. >> i see it's -- left wing. >> there you see a flight that had to make an emergency landing in los angeles last night. it was headed to australia from dallas when a news helicopter reported seeing fuel leaking from the air craft. the airport would only say that the plane had problems. the plane land safely. congress is considering a bill to hold the tsa more responsible. they want passengers to get through security as quickly and safely as possible and while technology can help make that happen the new law would require the tsa to create a five-year plan for its technology needs and report to congress on how it's using that equipment. >> there is more of a constant steady flow of bags or people through some checking or monitoring device that would be a big improvement. >> the bill would also require updates to be given to congress. they say they want to make sure that millions of dollars a year

goes on strike for another day. good morning. welcome back. >> we take you now to our continuing coverage of the bart strike. day two is here. while striking workers continue to picket there are no new negotiations scheduled. the union said its milks will return to their jobs if bart accepts their riders first plan. they want someone to decide the main sticking point between the two sides, workplace rules, this includes staffing, scheduling and overtime. bart said it wants someone to look at the contract rather than parts. we are live outside oakland's bart style. >> reporter: that's riepght there. are about a dozen or so workers out in front of the station. you can see them walking around in circling with their signs. some have been here since the overnight hours. this morning we have seen a few cars and ac transit buses drive by and honk in support.

bart workers have pledged to maintain a picket line until they have a new contract. in the meantime bart passengers are relying on charter buses to get into san francisco for a second day. because it's a weekend the bus service is limited just to the morning hours. from six until nine. we talked to some of the dozen or so passengers who were on that first bus that left the station this morning. they explained that they work weekends for hotels, restaurants and in the retail industry. they said their drive was more complicated this morning. >> i woke up like two, three hours earlier actually. it's really not convenient and it's. >> it's frustrating but, you know, you just have to deal with it. i have been in a union before. i know what they are going through. it sucks. it's just something that is part of life.

>> reporter: these buses are running from nine different stations into san francisco this morning. the el sorito, west oakland, concord, walnut creek, dublin, lafayette, and fremont. they are only running during the morning leaving those nine stations between expiks nine. then this afternoon the buses will leave the transbay terminal and head back to the respective stations. there are ways for bart passengers to get into the city this morning but the options are limited. live in oakland. ktvu channel 2news. >> the reality for the 400,000 people who take bart is their drive is going to take longer now. many chose to take ac transit or bus shuttle buses yesterday. late as eight last night hundreds were still waiting in line at the bus terminal in san francisco trying to get back to the east bay. with more vehicles on the road the friday evening traffic was worse than normal. >> the front of the line the

bus that was here refused to take me because they were full. now i have to wait. >> bay area bridges also roorted increased traffic. amtrak is helping some of the burden from the bart strike. passengers on board the capitol corridor train exit in richmond and then catch bart into san francisco. with the strike amtrak is taking people to the emoryville station to board bustos the city. >> this morning all lanes have reopened after a big rig carrying cooking oil crashed. the driver was carrying five thousand pounds of cooking oil when he crashed. the driver was not seriously hurt. clean up crews worked until ten to clear the oil from that roadway. big rig accident on southbound 101 was caught on video by a limo dashboard camera. you can see the big rig vera cross the lanes and then go over the center divide. it happened yesterday in the morning near wood side road in

redwood. chp said seven vehicles were damaged but nobody was hurt. the cause of that crash still under investigation. san francisco firefighter has been cleared of charges in the death of a teen passenger on a flight. prosecutors called the death of the 16-year-old a sad and tragic accident. investigators say she was on the ground covered in fire foam when a fire vehicle hit her. >> the young woman at the time the fire vehicle ran over her was covered in foam. there was no way that the driver of the vehicle was going to be able to see her. >> the 16-year-old's family has hired an attorney. the attorney said that the firefighters abandoned her outside the plane and failed to protect her. the family is preparing to file a civil claim against the department. >> vallejo police are investigating a home invasion that left two fearing for their lives. it happened just before 6:30. police say that the suspect forced his way in to the

victim's apartment by threatening them with a knife. after taking what money they had he ran away. nobody was hurt. a man suspected of killing a federal criminal investigator from oakland has been charged with her murder. the 56-year-old is scheduled to enter a plea on monday for the murder of sandra cok e. she worked in sacramento and was last seen august 4th. her body was found in vacaville. family say they once dated and she had been trying to help him get his life together. people left homeless by an apartment fire say they have been made victims again p by month telephones who -- motels who raised rates after the disaster. four people were hurt in the fire. now people left homeless say that local motels are trying to take advantage of them. >> i asked what the rate was and they said they were 105 but when they heard of the fire the rates went up to 160.

i was blown away. >> some residents were allowed to return home yesterday to get belongings that weren't burned in the fire. investigators are looking into the cause. the building wasn't required to have sprinklers because it was built before 89. >> pg&e wants a natural gas pipeline in san carlos to go back into service. they report an independent expert found the line is safe to resume operations despite finding thinner than expected walls in a section of that pipeline. pg&e took the gas line off line earlier this month after a company engineer raised concerns about it is. regulators have questioned the safety of the system. three bay area residents accused of casing a san rafael neighborhood to steal mail and property. police say that desiree every receipt, jasmine jones and

another person were arrested. police received complaints that they were going around homes. every receipt homes. a staff member at santa clara university has resigned over a decision by the school's president to change abortion insurance coverage. steven diamond said he will step down at the school's ethics center to protest the policy change. the president of the university said that the decision to deny abortion coverage is in line with the university's catholic beliefs. close to 600 members of the community have signed a petition asking for an appeal of the decision. >> new recruits in the san jose police department may turn in their badges since the union still hasn't worked out contracts. the police officers association said at least 17 of the 40 recruits who graduated last month are looking at other agencies for jobs. city leaders say that's just a scare campaign.

>> i'm not surprised that a few are leaving. the police union has been working hard to try to get them all to leave. >> it's discouraging to know that the people we just hired are walking out the door for other agencies. >> the mayor said that the union is hosting job fairs for other law enforcement agencies. the union has responded by saying that new hires deserve better. >> emergency response teams will hold drills this morning, they are happening near chestnut and laguna, christopher playground, at this one in ocean avenue and mount lake park near 11th avenue and lake street. they will start at 8:30. all neighborhood emergency response team volunteers are asked to attend. >> let's head over to rosemary. >> we are stuck in this pattern. i would like to see a little bit of rain in the forecast .

this morning bart is still on strike. check out this toll plaza. it's saturday morning, you don't usually see that on a saturday but we have that today in those far left lanes you see. those are cash paying lanes. you need fast track if you don't want to wait at that toll plaza. it's backing up. you should expect to see more traffic on the road today because of the strike. bart is going to be offering charter buses at nine stations until nine this morning and then that service will stop but it'll pick up again at about three this afternoon. if are you headed to and from sfo and usually relay on bart, there is another option. there are free shuttle buses taking people between the international terminal to milbrae station. buses will connect passengers between the cole sesame airport oakland station and the

airport. that usual air bart bus shuttle won't be available during the strike. if those options don't work for you one bay area man is working on a new form of transportation. he has launched a flotation device that lets people bike on the water. he tested it on the bay last no and he is planning another test this weekend. he is hoping to build five to ten more. each would cost $300. >> six months after the boston marathon bombing one of the survivors is speaking out about the attack. he spent close to a month in the hospital after doctors removed nails, ball bearings and pieces of metal from his body. six months later he said he has lost his hearing in one ear and still has shrapnel that's not been removed but he said he feels lucky to be alive. >> i get up every morning. i try to get moving as fast as i can so i don't think about --

expect your drive to take longer than normal. we are live at oakland's lake maret bart station where striking workers continuing to picket. >> reporter: the picket line has grown since we have been here since 6:30. tr thereare now about 20 standing out front with their signs. we have heard them chanting, asking for a contract in those chants and earlier this morning we did hear a few cars and ac transit buses go by honking their s horns in spoar. they have pledged to stay here until a new contract is in place. passengers in the meantime are relying on charter buses. because it's a weekend the charter bus service is limited to just the morning hours. they have started running at six and will run until nine. we talked to some of the dozen so passengers who left on the first bus. one woman explained she has no car and work at a restaurant in san francisco.

this is her only option to get to work. >> horrible. i can't think of anything to say but it's -- hopefully it won't happen again and hopefully they will work on monday. >> >> reporter: you would rather be working? >> you can ask anyone here. $400,000 a day to purchase and they -- they say they have set aside $20 million in their budget to pay for them. live in oakland. ktvu channel 2news. >> with no trains running other agencies are adding service. the bay ferry said it had more than double the average number yesterday. it also ran 12 vessels instead of eight. and tonight's cal football game is one of many events affected by the strike. the bears host oregon state at 7:30. fans are being asked to carpool. they can also ride a shuttle bus. it takes fans from downtown berkeley to memorial station. you just have to get to the bart stations first on your own. another packed event is the nike women's marathon tomorrow. this is the scene from last year's race. 30,000 have signed up to run

her body was found in a hospital stair well. this morning a report says an orderly saw a woman passed out in a stair well a week before the find of the body. we just heard from the family who called it heart break upon heart break thevment say they are pleading with ucsf to be more urgent in their search for what happened. the family has fired an attorney. today a safety meeting will be held in berkeley to talk about several recent robberies near the cal campus. the latest happened tuesday morning. two armed men robbed a student walking near north gate and university drive. the student was not hurt. the campus police say this was the 5th robbery or attempted robbery near campus in less than a week. the community meeting starts at two at good shepherd church on 9th. fewer firefighters will be on duty in orinda. a minimum of 17 will be scheduled daily in the

a live look there in berkeley where fingers of fog have made it into the neighborhood. >> firefighters battling dozens of wildfires in australia are bracing for another day of heat and high winds, 193 homes have been destroyed in the blue mountains west of sydney. 68 fires are burning and 22 of them are considered out of control. at least one death is blamed on fires after a 63-year-old man died while trying to protect his home. three firefighters have suffered burns and smoke inhalation. >> another milestone for google after shares closed at a record setting price over a thousand dollars. investors reacted to better than expected financial results. their third quarter revenue jumped 12% while profits were 30% higher than a year ago. stocks that trade above a thousand dollars are rare. they include price line.

another milestone for supporters of same sex couples, they will be allowed to marry in the sate of new jersey starting on. that's after the court denied a request for a stay from the governor. he said that the state will comply with the ruling. new jersey will be the 14th state to recognize gay marriages along with the district of columbia. >> a second worker at los angeles international has been arrested in connection with the dry ice explosive devices. earlier this week it would have those devices exploded and authorities later found a third one that had yet to detonate. los angeles police say that the latest person arrested was a ground service worker who worked as the supervisor of the first person arrested. nobody was hurt in either explosion. >> i see -- it's leaking fuel. >> a flight made an emergency landing in los angeles last night. it was headed to australia from dallas when a news helicopter reported seeing fuel leaking from the air craft. the airport would only say that

october 31st. some one dollar fares are still available for the first set of runs. free round trips will be offered weekdays. bolt bus offers free wifi, power outlets rgs leather seats and added leg room. the website attached to the new health care law isn't just frustrating people but the companies are also apparently having a hard time processing applications from that site. they say they are getting repeat applications and those with missing information. they have been forced to contact new customers by phone to verify the information submitted online. >> we talked to one who hadn't gotten the confirmation he anticipated so he had to submit a couple of times and ended up with a concern he had enrolled in multiple plans. >> the white house said that technical problems are being fixed. republicans plan to hold

. if are you just joining us this morning, we want to update you on the second day of the bart strike. you are taking a live look at the san mateo bridge and traffic moving along there just fine. we have seen extra traffic around the bay area on freeways today and you are going to experience likely, very likely more traffic than usual because of the strike. the bart strike could also make it harder to get too treasure island and the music festival. its going to offer limited pay parking on treasure island but those spots to have be purchased in advance. you can also use free shuttle buses that run from the parking lot outside the at&t park. it'll run from noon until ten today and tomorrow.

>> today is the 4th yearly hike for shelter on mount diablo. it kicked off at eight and goes until three organizers say the goal of the hike is to raise awareness about the homeless population. they say september's 3100-acre fire has helped provide a new aspect to not having a home. the flames forced the evacuation of about a hundred families and turned the idea of being displaced into a possible reality. napa has rejected a settlement offer from the bottle rock music festival. they say they offered to pay more than $14,000 claiming that's 75% of what is owed. napa said they owe more than $106,000. >> time now is 8:25. some people commenting on a facebook that they like the weather which is all credited

welcome back. >> bart workers walked off the job early yesterday after rejecting the latest offer from bart management. >> thousands turned to ferries, buss and carpools to make their way to and from work. >> we are live at the bart station where workers pickets and there is no indication when this strike may end. >> reporter: that's riepght. some of the cars and transit buses that have been driving past the picketers have been honking their horning in support. i talked to a couple of the people on the picket line from the station. some of them are train operators, others work in the maintenance department. one i spoke to offers an apology to people inconvenienced by the strike. >> some of the people who are frustrated that they can't get --. >> i feel sorry for them just as we feel sorry for ourselves. we want to end this as soon as possible. >> reporter: bart passengers in the meantime are relying on charter buses to get into san

west oakland, concord, lafayette, dublin, san leandro, haywood and fremont. they are free and go into san francisco. then this afternoon charter buses go from the transbay terminal back to their stations in the east bay. again those buses heading east are only going to operate from three to six in the afternoon. there options to get to the city but it's limited. now bart in the meantime has said the charter bus service is costing them $400,000 a day. they said they set aside $20 million of its budget to pay for the charter buses. >> the reality for the people who take bart each weekday is their commute will take much longer. as late as eight hundreds were still waiting in line at the bus terminal trying to get back to the east bay. the friday evening traffic was worse than normal. >> the front of the line the bus that was here wouldn't take me because they were full so

now i have to wait. >> the bridges also reported a increase in traffic. people going to and from san francisco international who rely on bart have another option. 511 is reporting free shuttle buses taking people between the bus station to the international terminal to the milbrae station and the san francisco bay ferry dock in south san francisco. ac transit buses will connect passengers between the cole sesm airport bart station and the airport. however, the usual air bart bus shuttle will not be available during this strike. if the options don't work for you, one bay area man is working on a new form of transportation. he has a bay cycle project that involves people to bike on water. he had a test run on san francisco bay last month.

he plans another test this weekend. he hopes to build five to ten more of them to sell by next summer. each would reportedly cost $300 or more. >> a san francisco firefighter has been cleared of any criminal charges in the death of a teen passenger on a plane. prosecutors called it a sad and tragic accident. she was on the ground covered in foam when she was hit. >> at the time the vehicle ran over her she was covered in foam. there was no way that the driver of the vehicle was going to be able to see her. >> the 16-year-old's family has hired an attorney to file a civil claim against the fire department. they said that the firefighters abandoned her. vallejo police are searching for a man who forced his way into an apartment and

held two at knifepoint. it happened last last night on lighthouse drive. two residents, one in a wheelchair were entering their apartment when the man approached them and pulled out a five inch long knife. he held that knife to the neck of one victim while he robbed both of them. nobody was hurt and police say the man left on foot. he is african american in his 50s, 5'7'', he was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and black paints and has been seen in that area before. some people left homeless by an apartment fire in redwood say they have been made victims a second time by area motels. four people were hurt in that fire on thursday. that badly damaged 20 units. people left homeless say local motels are trying to take advantage of it. >> i asked them the rates and they said they were 105 but after they heard about the fire the rates went up to 160. so, i was blown away. >> some were allowed to return home yesterday to get

belongings that weren't burned. investigators are still looking in to the cause but say the building wasn't required to have sprinklers because it was built before 8 the. >> a man suspected of killing a criminal investigator has been charged with her murder. randy alona is scheduled to enter a plea in the murder of sandra coke. she was last seen august 4th. her body was found five-days later in vacaville. family say the two once dated and she had been trying to help him get his life together after he was released from jail. the city of martinez is looking for a new city manager after the sudden resigning of phil vince. he had been manager for five- years and stepped down without warning. that after the city council reviewed his performance on sense. former california governor is reportedly lobbying for the
