francisco into the east bay. hello. i am frank somerville. >> and i am gasia bay.frank somerville -- hello. i am frank somerville. >> and i am julie haener. >> labor talks resumed today between b.a.r.t. and the unions and a deal may be close. however right now with no b.a.r.t. service traffic is heavy as thousands of commuters turn to buses and ferries and the ntsb is releasing new information about the deadly accident over the weekend. >> we have team coverage tonight. first we begin with ktvu's ken pritchett. the union now says there are only two issues that still need to be settled in the negotiations. ken? >> reporter: both b.a.r.t. and the unions have expressed optimism or hopes that a deal might be done today. we are still waiting on that and we have seen no negotiations here at the headquarters where the negotiations have been taking

place although b.a.r.t. expected a mediator to range such a meeting. all that said progress has been made today. late this afternoon the union representing a majority of b.a.r.t. workers said two issues remained, that is narrowed down from five before the week. the union and b.a.r.t. have been talking and both sides say work place issues separate the two sides from a deal. b.a.r.t. says it expected a mediator would have gotten both sides -- they expect both sides will get together to have meetings. the union said that b.a.r.t. should be -- when it comes to the meetings, more engaged in the negotiations. >> there is no reason when we were here all day yesterday from noon to 2:00 a.m. and vin here in the -- been here since this morning management shouldn't be putting

in equal time and equal commitment to get this done. >> even b.a.r.t. expressed this afternoon optimism that a deal might be reached by this time, 6:00 p.m., with the hopes of getting the trains running tomorrow. that hasn't happened. b.a.r.t. says when a deal is reached it could take 16 to 18 hours to get the trains rolling again. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. >> now to ktvu's sal castaneda in our traffic center for the latest on how the roads are looking. >> reporter: it will be tough as you might imagine. we have news chopper 2 out there helping us do this. highway 24 and from our live bridge camera eastbound. you can see it is tough. the fog rolled in to san francisco. it is taking twice as long on 101 getting up to the bridge.

highway 24. by the time you get here it should be a decent drive but it is taking 15 to 20 minute longer. if you live in danville you might consider using 580 instead. it gets heavy till you reach the lake shore area and then it breaks free over the hill. back to the desk. >> it has been a long haul for commuters trying to get out of san francisco. ktvu's david stevenson has been monitoring the traffic and joins us now. at 5:00 p.m. the lines were really long. >> reporter: that's right. in the last hour things picked up but you can see how long the line is. we will pan from one tend to the other. you can see hundreds of people waiting in line. two different lines trying to get on ac transit buses. this is longer than the line on

friday. half hour ago there were close to 300 people inching along, waiting to get on buses bobay. look at this. people seem very patient. we notice fewer are asking ac transit for directions to buses. a sign that maybe what the strike ighas done is -- strike has done is educate people. no surprise the strike has been forcing commuters to leave work early. many folks today left home hours ahead of normal just to make it to the city on time this morning. >> i have to get to the b.a.r.t. station an hour earlier to wait for the bus. not a big deal. >> reporter: we are seeing longer lines of chartered buses. the commute is still beginning even after the sun is setting.

reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> people lined up in oakland this morning to catch the ferry to san francisco. ridership was 183%. that is almost triple the number of people on an average week day. normally ferries transport 2600 people. today that number was 7500. >> fast track is helping ease the crunch on bridges. they say fast track lanes at the bay bridge moved 4 times faster than cash lanes. more than 10,000 drivers signed up for fast track since b.a.r.t. workers threatened to go on strike. >> the ntsb wrapped up a briefing on the investigation into the tragic b.a.r.t. accident that killed two workers saturday.

the train oper was training -- operator was training at the time of the accident and the train was traveling faster than originally thought. the program information suggest it was moving at 60 to 70 miles per hour. the two workers were killed while inspecting tracks. >> there were six employees on the train at the time of the accident. we examined various down loads, the image recording equipment is prepared for shipment. >> the ntsb said it could take months before a final report is released. >> more details about the two b.a.r.t. workers killed in saturday's accident. lawrence daniels and chris shepherd were struck by a four car train. lawrence daniels was a b.a.r.t. contractor who had a business in the sacramento area. chris shepherd worked as a

traffic engineer for two and a half years. >> they are controlling the speeds. making sure the trains aren't close to each other. keeping a safety record of all the trains. >> union leaders say long before saturday's accident they conventioned the safety of training managers -- questioned the safety of training managers. stay with www.ktvu.com for new developments as well as the strike. and get updates on facebook and twitter. pg&e won permission to reconnect the natural gas pipeline in san carlos. it was taken offline after an e- mail raised questions about its safety. pg&e petitioned to have the line put back into service saying the pipeline is safe. this allows pg&e to reopen four valves that connects that line with four other lines.

oakland police are investigating shootings that injured five people all within a span of four hours. the first occurred at 4:30 a.m. yesterday afternoon -- 4:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon. a few hours later a woman was shot in west oakland. then two 17-year-old boys were shot. and in another incident several more people were hurt and they crashed their car while trying to get away from a man who was shooting at them. a meeting on san jose's gang violence is getting underway right now. it is the first in a series of forums being held. information shared by residents will be used to help develop news strategies for preventing gang violence. there will be a second forum monday at the community center.

restaurant customers will have more information about where they are eating. new at 6:00 p.m. ktvu's robert handa joins us where he talked to restaurant owners about the restaurants th hosting a community meeting to figure out how to post a grade letting customers know how safe it is to come in and eat. >> reporter: people can't judge restaurants by the food but there are 7,000 restaurants in the south bay and they want consumers to have more information. she has been to restaurants where meals are scary. >> you would expect it to be fresh. but there are places where it is not all that great. >> reporter: they want to post a placard and a letter grade at restaurants after they have been inexpected for health and sanitation. they are in the middle of

holding commun meetings. food b i think it is great. >> reporter: two meetings were held today. one owner agrees with the goal but says the health inspections are enough. >> it is already being taken care of and well protected. so with this eratit. >> reporter: officials point out grading systems have worked out well. >> we have history from other jurisdictions where food born illnesses shrunk as a result of the program. >> reporter: meetings are being held daily throughout the county till the end of october. after that they will make a

we are continuing to keep an eye on the roads as people who take b.a.r.t. are finding other ways to get home. a deal to end the strike could be near. san francisco mayor ed lee is back in the bay area because of the b.a.r.t. strike. he is pleading for management and the unions to get an agreement done today. >> they know i haven't taken sides but that -- the system is invaluable to everybody and we got to get it working today. >> mayor ed lee says both sides are close enough and that he believes work rule issues can be setted and he offered his

condoleitances -- condolences to the workers killed. check with www.ktvu.com for more information. and get apodacea on facebook and -- updates on facebook and twitter. . new information involving a patient found dead at san francisco general hospital. the attorney representing the woman's family is speaking out. ktvu's david stevenson reports on what the attorney says he uncovered in the case. >> the body of lynne spaulding was cremated today, two weeks after she was found dead. she was missing 17 days. ktvu channel 2 news confirmed there was a report of a person in the stair well in the days before the body was recovered. it is unclear whether sheriff's deputies checked the stair well during searches for the woman. >> i heard that some hospital

staff had observed a body on the balcony prior to its being acknowledge as discovered. >> source received an e-mail tuesday indicating a hospital worker reported seeing a homeless person sleeping in the stair well where lynne spaulding was found. >> you don't go to a hospital and die of tragic circumstances all alone on a balcony. >> the hospital ceo said we feel terrible for lynne spaulding's family and friends as this part of the story must be painful. our hospital staff is committed to finding out what happened so that it will never happen again. san francisco general hospital declined to speak today about the investigations over the allegations. sheriff's department must wait before speaking out on the

case. in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. some truckers at the port of oakland walked off the job today cand takes too long. educators are hoping ac transit workers will stay on the job. at a hearing today they pleaand families. officials say ac transit services 32 schools in oakland and students would be hard pressed to get to school if there was a strike. >> they will not come to school if they don't have access to public transportation services. >> i haven't heard much discussions that is why i am here. a strike would impact all of us. >> the panel hearing the comments will submit a report to governor jerry brown by wednesday. governor jerry brown will decide whether to ask a judge for a 60 day cooling off
