now at noon major delays in the east bay after a fire inside the caldecott tunnel shut down traffic on the freeway, the major challenges the situation created for firefighters and drivers. and developing news out of los angeles, where a tsa agent is confirmed dead after a shooting. one scrurk worker is dead and another injured, the charges the driver who hit them

faces. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. >> good afternoon, i am tori campbell a-fire inside the caldecott tunnel caused quite a traffic jam this morning. this the scene right now from news chopper 2 above the traffic heading eastbound, which is slowly trying to recover. ktvu's paul chambers just spoke to him about the fire and the challenges they face. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori, as you said a total differenty scene now than half an hour ago, take a look, cars inching through, half an hour ago it was abandoned because they were getting it back, the reason it is moving slowly is because in bore one there is a downed power line so they only have one lane running. take a look at video, you can see the scene earlier today before 10:00. you can see people walking out of the tunnel. you can see there is also smoke

coming out of there because there was a car fire inside. inside the tunnel it was and acura that caught fire and firefighters were on the scene, like i said it came in at 9:51, 9:57 they worked that fire. i am joined by herr her to tell us what happened, you said there was smoke, right? >> there was a car fire 2/3 through the tunnel, once the car caught on fire the tunnel -- the tunnel quickly filled with smoke so we coordinated with cal trans and had the ventilation fans and had the air blown there, because the people were evacuating and leaving their cars and walking out, we wanted to make sure they had no smoke inhalation and do that. >> you said there was eight but

the number changed a little. >> we had 7 people transported as a precautionary measure, some were children so with wanted to make sure they didn't have serious smoke issues. >> where do things stand right now. >> they have opened that tunnel, they noticed a wire hanging there so they are checking to see what the wire is. >> thank you so much for talking to us and joining us right there, as i said you can see that, i was told there was 8 but one person decided not to go to the hospital, they were checked out for smoke inhalation, we will stay on top of that, there were people unset but things are running smoothly and things are safe, paul chambers ktvu channel 2 news. >> want to show you the

conditions now, you can see red there in both directions on highway 24 heading west toward the caldecott and east toward the caldecott as well, also highway 13 runs north southwest of the caldecott tunnel, quite a lot of back up there as well so be prepared to bring some patience if you are heading on highway 24 between arinda and oakland this afternoon. more details now, today's fire may have sparked those memories of that. this is video from that fire. early that morning a gasoline truck hit a car in the west bound bore that set off a fire that killed people again that was in 1982. it opened in 1937 with two tunnels, a third bore was added in 1964 and work on the 4th bore began in 2010 and that is expected to open in just two weeks.

now to developing news in los angeles, where there are reports a tsa agent was killed this morning by a gunman at los angeles international airport, at this point police will only say several people were wounded. l.a. police say the gunman opened fire with an assault weapon at a screening area in terminal three, that was just about 9:20 this morning. as we learned in a news conference just moments ago, the gunman is in custody. >> personnel officers from airport police, los angeles airport police responded immediately to the -- to the calls, they tracked the individual through the airport and engaged him in gunfire in terminal 3 and were able to successfully take him into -- into custody. >> hundreds of passengers are being held at terminal 3 and air lines that use that terminal include alleg ant,

frontier, jet blue, spirit and virgin america, this inspect of course will affect flights nationwide for hours to come. looking live now at san francisco international airport, san francisco police say all officers assigned to the airport are on what they call saturation patrols in an abundance of caution. officials say they are also in contact with the fbi, tsa and federal marshals as they monitor the situation at lax. tragedy after a construction worker removing signs is killed by a suspected drunk driver. the accident was also causing major headaches on northbound 680 for hours. brian flores joins us live with the latest on the investigation and it looks like traffic has cleared up. >> reporter: yeah, it has, good afternoon. this accident happened at 2:40 this morning but it wasn't until 10:30 when a tow truck crew came by and removed the wreckage, as for traffic you mentioned it has picked up but

earlier as we saw it was quite a mess as investigators pieced together how this accident happened. chp investigators spent most of friday morning examining the wreckage and re-creating the horrifying accident that killed a construction worker and injured another around 2:40 this morning. the chp says the two workers were trying to remove a sign that meant to warn drivers of a paving operation nearby in milpitas when the driver of a silver nissan crashed into them, one of the workers was pinned between the car and his work truck and killed, the other had injuries and taken to the medical center. >> the construction vehicle was parked well -- well on the right hand shoulder, they were outside of the vehicle, both construction workers, and they were removing a road work ahead sign when for whatever -- for an unknown reason the silver nissan left the roadway drove on the right hand shoulder and collided with them. >> the company does not want to speak on camera until after the chp completes their investigation and would only say that both of the workers

had been with the company for five years. as for the driver, he was also treated for major injuries. the chp says the driver faces felony dui charges, the chp says it conducted field sobriety advertises. >> dui investigation was performed and he was found to be under the influence of alcohol and arrested and released to the hospital. >> this morning for several hours traffic was backed up from as far south as alum rock and capitol expressway making a friday commute heavy. as for the driver, the chp says they will release his name later today. live in milpitas, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. take a look at a picture from san francisco this morning, a dump truck crashed through the guardrail and was hanging over the side of 101. that came after a collision involving at least two other vehicles. the accident happened just before 8:00 a.m. in the northbound direction near the third street off-ramp. the chp choiced the northbound

lanes for a time so tow trucks could pull the dump truck back on the road and hall it away. fortunately there is no word on any injuries. a woman underwent surgery this morning after she was found shot several times at an apartment complex in hayward before 11:00 p.m. at the lord 10 isson apartments on sleepy hollow avenue, people who live there reported hearing the gunshots and some neighbors say it is not the first shooting in the area. >> this is -- it is just sad this is going down, there is kids out here trick or treating and something like this happens and not only that we have our kids that live here and it is just dangerous. >> police have not released any information on who the shooter might have been and there is no word on the victim's condition. no major problems were reported last night as hundreds of halloween revelers packed the castro district. crowds not as big as areas past.

cameras caught all kinds of costumes from madam butterfly and kramer and elaine from seinfeld, in past years it attracted 100,000 people but officials scaled back the event after several violent incidents. in santa cruz 20,000 people flocked downtown to celebrate halloween. 18 arrests were made, all for alcohol or probation offenses. overall police say the night was mostly quiet compared to dozens of arrests and citations in years past. the santa cruz police department reportedly assigned 120 officers to the area last night compared to 15 officers on a normal evening. and in santa clara county the sheriff's department reports only one arrest during last night's operation boo, they say the arrest was for an outstanding warrant, no sex offenders arrested. new details about a federal investigator sandra coke, now the man accused says he wants to go to trial.
