"mornings on 2" starts now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." these are live pictures from san jose where a deadly pedestrian accident occurred. there are new developments in just the last five minutes. the connector to 280 is reopened. we'll have details about exactly what happened -- coming up in a live report. i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's go to steve. >> all right. thank you. a very happy friday morning. very foggy friday morning for some, not for all. it's not widespread. but it's definitely back. it's way down there. right on the deck. if you don't have the fog, it's cooler on the overnight lows. 38, napa. a lot of 40s showing up instead

of the 50s. the fog is reducing visibility to an eighth of a mile or a quarter of a mile for some. san francisco, nicole in the marina says very foggy in the bay. watch out for that. oakland, bay bridge, kind of dances around a little bit. we'll go for 62 in san francisco today. even oakland will cool down. fog for some, not for all. it will be hazy and warm if you are inland today. it looks like the weekend looks pretty good here except we'll have a garage actual cooling trend. a pretty big spread between the coastal temperatures which are just amazingly warm again for this time of year. a few mid- to upper 70s. 50s, 60s closer to the water. here's sal. we're looking at traffic that's busier. some commutes already seem to be friday light which is good. but the fog is a big problem here at the bay bridge toll plaza. thick fog. you can't even see where the backup begins. we happen to know because of the road sensors. it's about a 15-minute delay at

the toll plaza. it's pretty slow. san mateo bridge. that looks okay. there's been a little bit of slow traffic on the nimitz freeway nearby in hayward. nothing out of the ordinary. when you see fog like this, it will delay flights at sfo. we had a deadly pedestrian accident. the lanes have just reopened. this happened before 5:00. katie utehs has been following the story just after that. she joins us live to tell us how traffic is doing now. katie? >> reporter: sal, traffic is flowing smoothly. chp cleared the scene. it happened about five minutes ago. there's still flare deprein the roadway -- debris in the roadway. officers blocked the onram to 87 following the deadly crash that happened shortly before 5:00. investigators confirm for us in their most recent update that at least two cars hit a 26-year-

old man killing him on the roadway. the driver of a white toyota corolla hit the man in the number one lane of the southbound 87 onramp coming from northbound 280. a second car struck the man and a third likely hit the other vehicles. all of the other drivers stayed on scene. officers are trying to determine why the man was crossing a dark roadway. >> we don't believe him to be homeless based on his appearance which opens up why was he here. there were no vehicles in the area. possibly the thinking was maybe he broke down and was walking home. but at this time, there are no vehicles all the way back to 101. >> reporter: the ramp closure caused the traffic snarl on northbound 280 for quite a while. it was closed for two hours. we come back out here live, as we said, things are flowing smoothly this morning. the coroner has removed the body and will continue to

investigate why the man was on the roadway. back to you. >> thank you. a crash killed a man early this morning near the antioch police station. the impact ripped the roof off the front of the suv. police say the victim was a 30 -- 31-year-old man from antioch who slammed into a dark semitrailer around 2:15 this morning. the investigation is continuing into the crash with officers saying it's too early to tell if alcohol was a factor. there is new information into the disappearance and death of a patient at san francisco general. ktvu has learned about new fallout from the case. tara moriarty is live at the hospital with the big changes planned there this month. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. we've learn thood a sergeant and -- that a sergeant and two senior deputies will be transferred out of san francisco general hospital in two weeks. six people from the department will be transferred in. we've learned that a dispatcher has already been transferred,

someone connected to the lynne spalding case. if we take a look at the video, you can tell this is all fallout from the lynne spalding case. a woman being treated at san francisco general in september whose bodzdy was found in a hospital stairwell 17 days after she went missing, the woman disappeared september 21st. it wasn't until nine days later a search was done. sheriff ross mirkarimi admitted that only staff of the stairwells were searched. he says october 4th someone called to report a dead body in the stairwell. dispatch says we'll take care of it but that didn't happen. it wasn't until four days later that spaulding's body was discovered. now, according to doctors, she was close to being discharged. so deputies had no reason to consider her at risk. one policy change the sheriff has already implicated. any time a patient goes missing. a full search of the campus will be done. i'm told that more changes are to come and we'll, of course,

keep you posted. live from san francisco, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. happening now in san jose, families are lining up to register for the sacred heart holiday program which gives away free food for families and toys for children. they've been lining up since yesterday afternoon. a lot of families slept outside overnight just to be able to sign up. we talked to a woman. she's been in line since 3:30 this morning. she says this program will help feed her family for thanksgiving. >> i know not a lot of people have the time or, you know, want to come out early. but it's a good thing that they are doing and that we're really thankful for that. >> the program will help about 4,000 families this year. the registration starts at 9:00 this morning. food banks in san francisco and marin, they are bracing for another increase in demand for food after the reduction in federal funding for food stamps. at the beginning of the month,

homes receiving food from the program saw a monthly reduction of $36 for a family of four. there are about 5400 marin families getting food stamps, up from 2012. the food bank is about 1800 turkeys short for the upcoming holiday food drive. a family in blackhawk has decided they are gonna sue their homeowners association after their kids were kept from trick or treating and playing outside the tennis villas. they say it violates state and housing laws. the family also says when they talk to the president of the homeowners association, they were told some people were upset because the family is of mixed race. a fairfield man is behind bars in connection with a deadly shooting outside of kaiser hospital in vacaville earlier this week. police say 31-year-old german lopez, a former fairfield city council candidate, turned himself in early wednesday.

police say he's accused of fatally shooting his half brother, 24-year-old xavier lopez. xavier was also allegedly a suspect in a shooting that took place less than an hour earlier in fairfield. a man accused of kidnapping his 2-week-old son in sunnyvale and taking the baby to mexico could soon be extradited back to the bay area. henry guler romero was reported missing by his mother tuesday night and an amber alert was issued. his father, 22-year-old mesut guler, was arrested the next day after crossing the border into mexico. he has since been transferred to an arizona jail. santa clara county prosecutors are working to have guler extradited to face felony kidnapping and child abduction charges. hayward police are trying to find a missing man who suffers from diabetes and dementia. 77-year-old edward moore disappeared yesterday afternoon. he was last seen at his home on

sequoia road. police say he takes medication and easily gets shortness of breath from walking. he was last seen wearing a green shirt and camouflage shorts. efalso has a tattoo on his -- he also has a tattoo on his forearm. the controversial shooting of a 13-year-old has sparked several protests where the teen was killed. a deputy shot and killed lopez while he was holding a toy gun that looked like a real assault rifle. the sheriff's deputy says the teenager refused order to drop it. tomorrow's demonstrations are planned around the state including los angeles, oakland, san francisco, santa rosa, and sacramento. a strong earthquake rocked parts of northern california near the oregon border. now, the preliminary 4.7 magnitude quake hit off the coast near crescent city. it happened just before 5:00

happening today -- convicted serial killer joseph naso is scheduled to find out if he will get the death sentence. a jury unanimously recommended the death penalty earlier this year. naso represented himself during the murder trial. now, the jury found him guilty of killing four northern california women between the 1970s and the 1990s. during the penalty phase, prosecutors presented evidence connecting him to the murders of two other women. in just about 90 minutes from now, the drunk driving suspect accused of killing a menlo park couple last month is due in court again. this is the third time that marjorie reitzell has been scheduled to enter a plea. two earlier court dates were scansled because of her -- canceled because of her medical problems. she faces charges for hitting and and killing a couple while

they were walking their dog the evening of october 24th. now, a ktvu channel 2 investigation, your car's tires may look brand new but they could be old and dangerous. ktvu news checked u.s. tire safety records for the past ten years. 4.5million tires were recalled but less than a million were recovered and many of those potentially dangerous tires are still on the road. darryl magnuson says he wished he was told about the dangers of old tires. he was involved in a terrible crash three years ago. >> i think everyone needs to learn the age of their tires. i know it sounds strange and probably nobody is really giving it much thought. >> there's a free tire fax app and website that can help you find out if your cars are safe. you can get those helpful its by going to -- touches by going to ktvu.com -- helpful tips by going to ktvu.com. we have new information

about the brain injury claimed by tony dorsett. a state panel threwout the claim in may months before dorsett was diagnosed with a serious brain problem. reportedly, it was a debilitating condition connected to repeated blows to the head during his playing days with the dallas cowboys. he appealed the decision but an appeals court later upheld it. we have new information about the nfl bullying scandal. this is video i want to show you the miami dolphin lineman, jonathan martin getting into his car outside of his parents' home, just outside of los angeles. his lawyer claims richie incognito was not the only teammate bullying his client. he says jonathan martin was having problems with several members of the miami dolphins. martin has left the dolphins,

citing emotional distress. incognito has been suspended indefinitely. families who lost loved ones on the old eastern span of the bay bridge will be allowed to go on on the bridge to hold a special memorial service. the idea came in september after the chp granted one plaur's request to go to the spot where her son was killed in 2008 by a drunk driver. newt was there as carol lester placed flowers on the bridge in her son's memory. tomorrow at 10:00 a.m., other families will get the same opportunity. to find out how you can be involved contact the san francisco office of the chp. today, a.c. transit will roll out new buses for service in and out of san francisco. 54 new coach buses like you see here have been purchased. the first 16 start running today. these buses are built locally. they also have free wi-fi, luggage racks, high seat backs,

101 is a little slow. 101 near 280 is slow. but again it gets better after you pass the guadalupe parkway. let's go to steve. well, talk about some fog. again, it's not widespread. but what's there is very shallow. so reducing visibility. some areas, no fog at all. a little cooler on the lows. there's a patch of clear going south. the fog is patchy. what's there is very, very thick. storm track stays to the north. it looks like it will stay to the north. some rain up in the pacific northwest had a little bit up in extreme northern california, crescent city had .3. ronald thompson up there, our observer. there's the stretch of fog. you can see a little clearing taking place. some of the fog over the bay, really thick. it's clear, a wall of it, then it's clear. 30s for some. novato, napa. much colder than yesterday morning. we had the higher clouds. 50s for others. the 50s are seven, eight degrees cooler than yesterday.

a san jose police detective who worked in the sex crimes unit has pleaded guilty to exchanging sexually explicit photo with a teenaged girl. the 34-year-old man has resigned as part of his plea

deal. he had been a san jose police officer for eight years. prosecutors say he had been in contact with the girl since 2010 and knew she was a minor. he turned himself in this past july after his computer was seized by authority. he could be sentenced to at least six months in jail. we have new information on former u.s. national security agency contractor, edward snowden. a new report says snowden persuaded as many as 25 other nsa workers at a spy base in hawaii to give up their passwords. the report says he used the passwords to access some of the classified material he leaked to the media. he apparently told them they were needed for him to do his job as a computer systems administrator. a utah man has pled guilty for a drug conspiracy charge for his role in the site known as the silk road. the guilty plea from curtis green comes one month after federal authorities shut the site down. the site brought in $1.2

billion since it started in 2011. it was shut down when authorities arrested him in a branch of the san francisco -- san francisco library. a nationwide tests many california students are failing in some of the most basically subjects. the national assessment is the only nationalized common standardized exam from kindergarten to high school. 8th graders scored 45th in math and 42nd in reading. uc berkeley will inaugurate its 10th chancellor. he will receive the medal from u.s. president, janet napolitano in a ceremony. dirks will unveil his vision for the future in a speech. he already said he wants to

clear. you can see fog all over the place. there are pockets where it's very, very foggy, visibility is awful. it kind of dances around. we'll touch on that more with the traffic. it's been hanging around the bay bridge in oakland for most of the morning. 30s, 40s to 50s but cooler this morning. we've lost the higher clouds. but the fog is back in a big way. that means a cooler temperature for much of the coast and bay. 62, san francisco. i've even scene a couple of tweets that says fog in the mission. parts of the city. not all. it will be hazy and warm away from the coast. that fog will burn off. everything staying to the north. fog, sun, hazy. looks like a nice weekend. any rain will hold off until next weekend. i don't think the rain will make it here, maybe to the north. 50s, 60s to mid- to upper 70s. here's sal. steve, you and i have been talking about the fog and you just showed foggy pictures.

i want to show you la fayette where there's no fog at all. that means driving is going to be easier and not exactly easier but easier for people driving through fog. nice and sunny. traffic is moderately heavy. here's the contrast -- the fog, very slow traffic here and the traffic at the toll plaza is backed up for about a 25 to 30- minute delay unless you are in the carpool lane. i want to mention a crash, southbound 880 at washington. it should be here. but the indicators have it near winton. the road sensors are showing slow traffic almost all the way down to union city. plan ahead. now, let's go back to the desk. happening now -- students at maybeck school in berkeley are starting to arrive for classes. many will be wearing skirts. it's a show of support for a

classmate and friend badly burned while sitting in a bus. brian flores has more. >> reporter: hi, good morning, dave. yeah, students making their way to school here this morning in support of 18-year-old sasha fleishman. this was a student who just days ago was allegedly burned by another 16-year-old, richard thomas, while on board an a.c. transit bus. i'm hear with one of the students now. lewis paulson and you are wearing a skirt right now? >> i am. >> reporter: why the support this morning? >> because it's really important. i feel like maybeck is a school where you can be who you are. i don't know why this was done but i feel like after this, it's important for the school to come together in support of him. >> reporter: do you know sasha at all? >> i knew them for a little while. they were -- i didn't know sasha personally. but i knew who he was and i -- it's really important whether

you know sasha at all to come support him. >> reporter: talk to me about the mood of the school. are you coming together, are you getting counseling? >> it's not that down but it's just -- it's sort of supportive. it's amazing how sasha had an account online to raise money and it was shut down a couple days ago. they had already raised everything they needed. it's amazing how much the school can come together. >> reporter: in terms of the crime itself, is it kind of worrying for students at all this. >> no, not really. no. i don't want to speculate about what happened. but i don't think it was -- we don't really worry about that, we're just trying to come together and support him. >> reporter: thank you, lewis paulson, one of the students here at maybeck. students will be wearing skirts in support of sasha fleishman. >> the sprblg in this case, being -- the suspect in this days, being tried as an adult. he faces felony charges. sasha is in the hospital

recovering from burns. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> prosecutors have filed formal hate crimes against the teenager in this case. they will try 16-year-old richard thomas as an adult. it's a case that involves several felony charges. court documents we obtained include notes from the police officer saying he set the boy on fire because he's homophobic. the family of the teenaged suspect is coming to his defense. >> what kind of boy is he? >> he's a good kid. a very good kid. he was joking around. that's all. >> reporter: police arrested the teenaged suspect the day after the suspect after looking at the surveillance video from the a.c. transit bus. in the philippines one of the most powerful typhoons ever

recorded made landfall this morning. this is new video of a family in a village trying to carry their small home to higher ground. this has triggered land slides, damaged homes and knocked out power lines. communication has been cut off so the full extent of damage is not yet known, at least -- at least four people are dead and 725 others have evacuated their home. >> people go to churches, other governmenting whens when they can -- government buildings when they can. can they hold up to 3ky low meter winds -- 3 kilometer winds. >> the typhoon could slam into vietnam tomorrow. fema has denied requests for continued recovery assistance after the rim fire in yosemite park sum -- this summer. they will be forced to rebuild

and repair with only state and local resources. in a letter to the governor, fema said they found the damage to the county was not severe enough to require federal aid. the fire burned more than 257,000 acres and destroyed structures including berkeley's tuolumne camp. we have new information about the report of a sexual assault at de anza college in cupertino. the leaked victim is a member -- alleged victim is a member of the lgbt community and the case is being investigated as a possible hate crime. the 19-year-old student said she was raped in a first-floor restroom at the media and learning center on monday. campus police called the attack an isolated incident and identified the attacker as an 18-year-old to 20-year-old male de anza student. the two were acquaintances but not friends. they never had a relationship. >> he makes me feel a little

weird. sometimes i have to fear it could happen to me, too. >> campus police say they know who they are looking for but so far no arrests have been made. police in san mateo need your help to identify a man that they assaulted a teenaged girl as she walked to school. police say he proposed a 16 -- he approached a 16-year-old girl near isabel avenue wednesday morning. the man is described as fill lee know in his -- filipino, in his 30s, clean shaven, spiky hair. police say he was driving a white honda crv or similar car. 7:38. happening today, former santa clara county supervisor george shir raw shirak -- george shirakawa is to be sentenced.

the drirnt -- the district attorney wants him to serve a year in jail. b.a.r.t. said it may have to reduce operating hours because of new track maintenance rules recently adopted following the deaths of two workers. b.a.r.t. made the revolution during a hearing on rail safety in san francisco. one official said the new rules are going to be disruptive to service, hours of operation and the b.a.r.t. budget. the head of the union calls for a criminal investigation into the worker's deaths last month as they were inspecting the tracks. the san jose police department says many crimes are going unsolved because of a staffing shortage. the police department's been losing officers at an alarming rate. now, there were 1400 police officers in 2009, now there are about 900. he said there are not enough investigators to staff special units. they say crimes like burglaries and car thefts are going

unsolved. >> without a doubt, for practical reality, those crimes are going unchecked, uninvestigated. >> police say they would need to add at least 200 new officers just to restore those special units. san jose state's president backing off from a plan that could have cut classes next semester. they were told they need to cut tens of thousands of dollars just to stay within the budget. yesterday, the school's president released a statement saying the campus will use a one-time fund that was supposed to go towards infrastructure and other projects to make up that difference. 20 minutes before 8:00, the stanford cardinal football team ended up beating oregon, end ecthe ducks' dreams of a national -- ending the ducks' dreams of a national championship. stocks are higher in early trading on wall street. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is up 73. the nasdaq is up 38 and s&p up 10. the market may be reacting to a surprising report on october jobs. the labor department says 204,000 new jobs were created last month. earlier reports were revised upwards which is another indicator that hiring has picked up. the jobless rate rose 1/10 to

change plans will end up with better policies and may get subsidies to offset any higher costs. the bay area will get 2.5 million of grants as part of the affordable care act. three healthcare groups will split that money. they are in san francisco, the san francisco medical sent, the asian-americans for community involvement in san jose, and san rafael's ritter center. the money is part of a $150 million nationwide grant to increase healthcare access. 7:47. at 9:20, this morning, pacific time, security screenings at airports nationwide will pause to honor the tsa officer killed last friday at l.a.x. 9:20 a.m. was when gerardo hernandez, a father of two, was shot to death. he became the first tsa officer killed in the line of duty. hundreds of airports will hold a moment of silence. a public memorial will be held next tuesday in los angeles.

visibility problems are happening here at all. livermore is friday light through tracy and livermore. a little bit of slowing in dublin. back to the desk. openly on 2, the latest fallout from the case of a patient who disappeared from san francisco general hospital only to later turn up dead. tara moriarty is at the hospital with the security shakeup that's coming later this month. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. a sergeant and two senior deputies we're told will be transferring out of san francisco general hospital and we've just learned that that sergeant is not a sworn deputy, that he's a civilian hired as private security by the hospital years ago. so that means he's not undergone the same type of training that others in the sheriff's department have. six people will be transferred into san francisco general hospital. one dispatcher has already been transferred out. this is the result of fallout from the lynne spalding case. this was the woman who was

being treated at san francisco general hospital in september. her body was found in a hospital stairwell 17 days after she went missing. the woman disappeared september 21st. it wasn't until nine days later, a search was done. in a press conference. mirkarimi said october 4th, someone called to report a dead body in the stairwell. dispatch said we'll take care of it. that didn't happen. it wasn't until four days later, her body was discovered during a routine grounds check. she was close to being discharged. so deputies had no reason to consider her at risk. one policy change the sheriff has already implicated, any time a patient goes missing, a full search of the campus will be done. i'm told more changes are to come. we'll keep you posted tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. new, a man is dead

following a high speed crash near the antioch police station. the impact ripped the roof off the front of the suv. police say the victim was a 31- year-old man from antioch who slammed into a park semitrailer around 2:15 this morning. the investigation is continuing into the crash. officers say it's too early to tell if alcohol was a factor. in san jose, the 280 connector ramp to southbound highway 87 is back hope after a deadly pedestrian crash. the chp says a 26-year-old man was hit and killed shortly after 5:00 this morning. the connector ramp reopened within the past hour. investigators are still trying to figure out why the man was on the roadway. 8:04. in about an hour from right now, families in san jose will be able to sign up for a special holiday program that gives free food to families and toys to kids. katie utehs live in san jose now. some of those family camped out overnight just so they could

francisco, santa rosa, and sacramento. a strange string of violence has landed a former city council candidate in fairfield in jail in connection with a deadly shooting outside of kaiser hospital in vacaville earlier this week. it involved two separate shootings in just one day. police say 31-year-old bermen lopez -- german lopez was arrested wednesday after turning himself in in connection with a deadly shooting. the victim, exdavier lopez, his -- xavier lopez, his half brother. xavier is a suspect in a shooting that took place an hour earlier in fairfield. a man accused of kidnapping his 2-week-old son in sunnyvale and taking the baby to mexico could be extradited back to the bay area soon. henry guler was reported missing by his mother.

sasha fleishman's mother says he's not labeling himself as a fail or female -- male or female. he was on a bus when a taker allegedly set sasha's legses on fire when sasha was -- legs on fire when sasha was on the bus. the 16-year-old suspect richard thomas is being charged as an adult and faces several felony crimes. in court document, the arresting officer wrote that thomas stated he did it because he's homophobic. thomas's family is coming to the aid. back here at maybeck high there's growing support. >> i feel like maybeck is a school where you can be who you are. i don't know why this was on but i feel it's really important to support him. >> reporter: counseling is available for the students here if they choose it. sasha has received support online. and they've been able to raise over $21,000 to help pay for

in a letter to the governor, fema says their review found the damage to the county was not severe enough to require federal aid. the fire burned more than 237,000 acres and destroyed several structures, including berkeley's tuolumne family camp. we have new information about the report of a sexual assault at de anza college in cupertino. a source is telling ktvu the alleged victim is a member of the lgbt community and this case is being investigated as a possible hate crime. the 19-year-old student said she was raped on monday in a first-floor restroom at the media and learning center. campus police say this is an isolated incident and that the attacker is an 18 to 20-year- old male de anza student. they say the two of them were acquaintances but not friends and they never had a relationship. >> it's very scary. i mean, whether you know the person or not, if somebody is gonna do something like that,

we've been touching on. it should burn off at 9:00, 10:00. it's very thick for some. jet stream storm track stays well to the north. it's going to be a dry weekend. we have a little change with the fog back. some of that is really thick. system inches closer. but i think it will be a dry weekend and probably dry next week. 40s and 50s. 30s for reno and also tahoe, 46 for ukiah. monterey is also 51. a little bit of rain fell up in crescent city. you can see some of the fog not widespread. it's hit or miss. i think once that burns off, it will be back. the system will be deepening right here. as it does, that will spend the ridge of high pressure up. slight cooling. inland temperatures won't cool off that much until maybe sunday. a bend in the jet stream is not favorable for us. this whole pattern will inch toward us next week. i think by the time it arrives, there won't be much left for us.

a halloween night accident could lead to some major safety improvements for a crosswalk in cloverdale in sonoma county. a car hit two boys that were crossing south cloverdale boulevard early halloween evening. the boys ages 12 and 13 suffered serious injuries. three months earlier a woman was killed at the same intersection. the cloverdale city council is considering installing safety lights at the often dark and dangerous intersection. the san jose police department says many crimes are going unsolved because of a staffing shortage. the police department has been losing officers at an alarming rate. there were 1400 officers in 2009. now there are about 900.

right now, airport security screenings nationwide will pause toen whoer the -- to honor the tsa officer killed at l.a.x. ger raur doe hernandez was shot -- gerardo hernandez was shot down and killed. a public memorial will be held next tuesday in los angeles. the alleged gunman is facing a charge of murder. tomorrow family members who lost loved ones on the old eastern span of the bay bridge will be able to go on the bridge and hold a special memorial service. the idea came after the chp granted one mother's request to go to the spot where her son was killed in 2008 by a drunk driver. ktvu news was there as carol lifter put flowers on the bridge in her son's memory.
