. good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2. it is saturday november 9th. >> let's check in with rosemary for your forecast this saturday. good morning, the sun is up. it's a pretty start there are morning. we're dealing with patchy fog this morning. i'll talk about where. it's cooler anywhere from 3 to 6 degrees. for the afternoon mostly sunny slightly cooler and it will be a cooling trend through veteran's day and the possibility is still of rain chance coming for some. i'll have a model on this, and and we'll be look at your temperatures coming up. >> continuing coverage for the supertyphoon, the red cross announced it received reports of 1200 people who have died in two hard hit areas, typhoon hanging on and it packed

sustained winds of 195 miles per hour with gusts reaching 235 miles per hour. cities are washed out making rescue efforts very difficult. they found 100 bodies scattered in the streets. it's hard to pinpoint the precise death toll since islands and cities are cut off. there's great concern for the 350,000 people who are living in tents and temporary shelters since the 7.2 earthquake struck last month. the bay area filipino community has looked for solace at churches. one woman tells us most of her family lives in the northern province. she's spent the day trying to get in touch with loved ones. >> we bring to the third world. most of our building, it's not

stable or safe. >> many bay area filipinos say many of the buildings don't have the infrastructure to withstand disaster, especially after the earthquake last month. there are rescue efforts under way to help the victims. >> they're resilient, you'll see the community come together not only in the philippines but from abroad. >> there are about 640,000 filipinos living in the bay area. local groups say the best way to help right now is to send money, not food water and clothing, it takes too long to get to the affected areas. look for the national and world section in our website under news. new this morning, an oakland police officer has been involved in a hit-and-run accident. a car ran a red light and got.

it boned by the officer's vehicle. we have this live from oakland ali? >> reporter: this happened at 4:30 this morning. according to police at the scene, a red honda ran the red light at that intersection. it crashed into an oncoming police control car. there was debris scattered and the front end of the patrol car was barbed in. thee people who were in that red honda, jumped out and fled the scene of the crash. they chased them and apprehended one of the people from that car. he was able to walk to an ambulance in order to get checked out. the police officer had to go to the hospital after he complained of neck pain. they want to question two other people and they're looking for those two individuals this

morning. live in oakland, channel 2 news. happening today loved ones of those who lost their lives on the eastern span of the bay bridge are going to be allowed on the bay bridge this morning for a special memorial. this led this woman back to the bridge for her son. and other people will be allowed to honor their family members in the same way. a boy was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy. organizers are calling it a day of action for andy lopez. he refused to put down on what was a replica assault rifle. the deputy should have realized that his gun was fake. here's a map of a few of

skirt, what is the problem with that. it's very distressing to me. >> last night the parents of luke sasha fleischman, he's identified as a gender, neither female or male. the oakland teen was targeted monday because of gender identity. the 18-year-old was wearing a skirt at the time he was attacked. >> when sasha fleischman saw the picture of his school mates wearing the skirts, he had a big smile on his face. >> they wore skirts in solidarity, there are ribbons at bus stops for sasha fleischman who has burns to his legs, and the person who lit him up on fire is being charged as an adult for a hate crime.

the attack at poke and turk streets is near city hall. the person is in critical condition and there are no suspects at this time. hillary clinton and her daughter chelsea will be in california tonight. hillary clinton will be giving a speech. proceeds will benefit the clinton foundation. they plan to rally and urge hillary clinton to run for president in 2016. both the chp and the police department will have additional officers on duty. the casino has been open since tuesday and has been bringing in large crowds ever since. the time is 7:08 and it feels nice outside.

happening today. the nonillion and you'll leap sand castle contest is this month. it's part of the golden gate national recreational area. it involves elementary school students architects and others and they raised a quarter of a million dollars. flames started at 2 p.m. near lower lake south of more began valley road. it's burned 150 acres and is 30% contained. evacuations have not been called for. the fire started when the flames spread to nearby brush. that fire could reach 700 acres. you felt the ground shake in the east bay late last night. a preliminary 3.0 quake struck around 10:00 last night. so far no damage has been

reported. the tsa and airports nationwide remain in a dispute over security. in april the tsa announced at the end of the year, it would turn over the monitoring of exit lanes to the airports themselves. they say the increased costs would exceed their budgets, investigators think that they may have entered the secure area of lax used by travellers exiting terminal three. [ taps ] operations at l.a.x. came to a halt yesterday morning to honor hernandez, the officer and father of two killed in last week's shooting. a memorial service will be held for hernandez on tuesday. there was a moment of panic as a man brought out a gun at

terminal 3. he had just flown to the airport and was seen with the weapon in the baggage claim area. he had declared the gun and got on the flight, he was arrested for showing off the weapon in a public area. a man was arrested for running into an empty plane last night. he wasn't armed but was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. the check of the plane turned up nothing. no other airport operations were affected. a new report is raising doubts how afghanistan troops can protect their country. the number of troops killed in combat jumped 80% this summer compared to last year. us and coalition deaths dropped by 60%. while they won't explain the reason behind those numbers afghanistan troops are taking over those operations.

the onshore breeze will be strengthening. low cloud fog will be hugging the coast inside the bay. we're going to begin to see an increase in clouds here. we remain dry for veteran's day, but tuesday morning perhaps your first day back to work, take a look at this. we have rain falling over areas of the north bay. this system here is going to be sliding south. at this point it doesn't look like it's going to come much farther than perhaps the golden gate bridge, but that will be the best shot of getting that rain, and that window, that time frame looks to be in the overnight hours monday and early tuesday morning. let's go it to the weekend, temperatures will be cooler in the afternoon, three to 6 degrees cooler for most of us. mid to upper 30s for parts of the moon bay.

he kicks the man seven times and calmly walks away. this happened on third and bryant. it is common for those living outside to be assaulted. >> it's sickening to see violence against anybody especially when someone is already in such a vulnerable position, doesn't have a place to sleep, is forced to be on the concrete. >> he stopped to help and police recall, he got up and walked off. it's unclear how serious his injuries were or what the motive was for the attack. san francisco police say they have no record of this assault taking place. they're offering a $20,000 reward for the shooting death on 711 employ last year. three men killed 67-year-old man last september. they release this pictures of the suspects. all three are carrying guns and

reducing salaries would be a good place to start. >> the fees to attend the community colleges is the lowest in the u.s. they're questioning whether the state can fund its general financial aid program. they're scheduled to vote this tuesday. it will require at least a c average. a scam involving an unknown caller says you owe money. if you receive a similar phone call, call gp directly to discuss your bill. two businesses were contacted by the unknown caller earlier this week. two runways will be called next november for the final part of the construction project. they'll be reconfigured to create longer threshholds.

possibility of rain. models are updating. i'll have the latest for you, coming up. continuing coverage now of the supertyphoon in the philippines. this morning, the red cross announced it received reports of 1200 people who have died in two hard-hit areas. typhoon haiyan flooded coastal commits, packing winds of 195 miles per hour with gusts reaching 235 miles an hour. roads in the cities are washed out, making rescue efforts extremely difficult. crews arriving to one area found more than a hundred bodies scattered on the streets. officials say it's hard to pinpoint the precise death toll, since many devastated cities and islands are cut off. they say there's great concern for the 350,000 people who were living in tents and temporary shelters since the 7.2 earthquake struck last month. with phone service spotty in the philippines, the bay area filipino community has looked for solice and churches and among themselves as they wait to hear from relatives in

one person was later caught near 48th and bancroft. police are still looking for the other passengers. officers say no one was seriously hurt. well, four east bay men wanted in connection with an armed home invasion have been arrested. the robbery happened on august 26th at a home on rose elm place in pleasanton. police say the suspects forced themselves into a home and then took money from the family living there. two suspects were arrested in their oakland homes, another two in their homes in antioch. rallies are being held in california for the 13-year-old boy in santa rosa shot and killed by a sonoma county sheriffs deputy. organizers are calling it a day of action for andy lopez. lopez was killed last month after deputies say he refused to put down what turned out to be a replica assault rifle. the shooting sparked numerous protests with demonstrators accusing the deputy of excessive force. critics say the deputy should

we are following breaking news out of san francisco for you. the fire department has confirmed a body has been found in the water near pier 48. firefighters say the call first came in as a water rescue effort, but when they arrived on scene, it became a recovery operation. the medical examiner has been called to the scene. some 200 miles above us right now, there are two russian cosmonauts performing an historic space walk with the olympic torch. it's not lit because of safety reasons, but the torch is familiar with its celestial surroundings. it was taken aboard the u.s. space shuttle atlantis back in '966 for the atlanta summer olympics, but this is the first time the torch is part of an actual space walk. a three-man crew with an american delivered the torch to the international space station on thursday. this galactic spectacle is to promote the olympics in russia

shooting, the tsa and airports nationwide remain in dispute over security. in april, the tsa announced that at the end of the year it would turn over the monitoring of exit lanes at security check points to the airports. but airports say that increased cost would exceed their budgets. they believe paul ciancia may have entered the security area in a lane used for exiting terminal 3. operations at lax came to a stop yesterday morning to honor geraldo hernandez, the 39-year- old tsa officer and father of two killed in last friday's shooting. dozens of airports across the country also participated in that moment of silence. a memorial service will be held for hernandez on tuesday. there was a moment of panic at lax last night, when a man brought out a gun in terminal 3. authorities say he had just

flown to that airport and was seen with the weapon in the baggage claim area. airport guards quickly arrested him. he had declared apparently that gun and passed through security before getting on his flight to lax, burr he was still arrested for showing off the weapon in a public area. at seattle tacoma international airport, authorities arrested a man for running into an empty plane last night. investigators say he was not armed, but he was under the influence of either alcohol or drugs. a check of the plane turned up nothing and no other airport operations were affected. we have new information about the evidence in the case against james holmes, accused aurora colorado movie theater shooting. the judge says an iphone and handgun found in holmes' car can be used as evidence in his trial. the judge also decided to limit how holmes' initial statements to detectives could be used, what exactly he said to those detectives has not been released. holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to

4500 and 5400. the series of accidents related to problems in the steering systems on the vehicles prompted the recall. muni riders now have access to e-mail and text alerts to find out if there is a delay on their route. the san francisco municipal transportation agency launched the service earlier this week. riders can subscribe to the service on the agency's website. users can customize their account to only provide information on certain routes and during certain times of the day. subscribers can receive alerts monday through friday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. firefighters are still trying to put out a brush fire in lake county. those flames started yesterday around 2:00 in the afternoon near lowerly, south of morgan valley road and east of highway 29. calfire says it's burned about 150 acres and is only 30% contained. no one has been evacuated. fire officials say the fire started when flames from a vehicle fire spread to nearby brush. they say the fire could reach 700 acres.

year. 67-year-old mohammed rizag was killed during a robbery last spent. police released pictures of the suspects, all three carrying guns. the new $20,000 reward will be given to anyone with information leading to an arrest and conviction of these men. a san jose couple robbed at gunpoint while trying to sell their puppy is now telling their story. it happened just about one month ago when the husband and wife agreed to meet the potential buyer in a parking lot behind the taco bell on tully road. the couple was asked not to be identified, but described what happened while the suspect was holding their 9-week-old pomeranian puppy. >> he was petting the dog and out of nowhere, he starts to zip the dog up in his coat and pulls out a gun and says get out of the car. >> the suspect was responding to an ad the couple posted on ebay's classified section. they were selling the puppy for $700. police identified the robber as

38-year-old juan carlos chavez of milpitas. they say his neck tattoo, which appears to say "mexicano ," could be key to catching him. police responded to reports of a domestic dispute at a home on bridal way. according to police, when they tried to arrest the man inside the garage, a pitbull charged the officers. a neighbor describes what he heard. >> three loud booms. first thought it was fireworks. second thought, not normal. looked out the window, saw a police officer standing at the garage opening with a shotgun, yelling, is there anybody else in the house! then i heard screaming. >> police did arrest the man and then investigators remained at that scene for several hours. a chance to say good-bye to loved ones. the memorial getting under way on the old span of the bay

to be escorted onto the old eastern span of the bay bridge. some have brought flowers, other personal items they will be leaving at different memorial sites. the chp officers will be escorting 10 families onto the old eastern span of the bay bridge for this 10:00 a.m. memorial. the idea behind it was inspired by an east bay mom who lost her son to a drunk driving crash in 2008. 21-year-old scott lightser was struck by a drunk driver going more than 100 miles an hour. back in september, carol lightser let our cameras follow her to the site where her son died as she created a small memorial for him. it was a somber moment, but she told us it did help her healing process. now the chp wants to let others have the same experience. this morning, the chp will be escorting representatives of 10 different crash victims onto the eastern span of the bay bridge for this morning's memorial. we spoke to a woman whose father was lsd killed by a drunk driver on the bay bridge. mary melton says back in 1964,

her father was a cal trans worker doing work on the bay bridge when a drunk driver struck and killed him. she made the trip with her family all the way from tracy this morning to be here. >> hopefully this will bring closure. i got my son, my granddaughter with me, my husband, because they have heard the stories, and they want to be where he was. so this will bring closure to the entire family. >> reporter: the chp officer in charge tells me there will be two groups, one for the upper deck, and one to the lower deck. the event is organized by the chp and mothers against drunk driving. again, the families of 10 different victims who lost family members on the old eastern span of the bay bridge will be escorted to the site. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. cargo ships to the port of oakland will soon have the option to lower their carbon

footprint. port officials announced yesterday the new shore power system has been completed. the $60 million system allows ships to use electricity instead of burning diesel fuel while they are docked at the port. neighbors and city leaders say the system will not only lower or reduce air pollution, but will help many people who have asthma. >> what it means is a lot of children who are growing up here or downwind from us are going to have less asthma, that they are going to be healthier. >> doctors estimate about a quarter of west oakland's school-aged children suffer from asthma and so did about a third of adults. by january 1st, state law will require every port in california to be on the same shore power system. the global traffic expert tom tom is also now revealing the most traffic congested cities in the country. the report examines traffic in cities with a population of more than 800,000. the west coast dominating this year's list of rankings, with

five in the top 10. topping the list once again is los angeles. but take a look at the list on your screen. you can see san francisco is coming in at number 2. honolulu and seattle and san jose round out that top five. it appears that some investors are listening to analyst advice and not buying twitter's stock at its current price in the 40s. shares of twitter fell yesterday, the second day of trading for the stock. investors may be weighing the san francisco company's ability to turn a profit, which is something it's never done. analysts say volatility in new stocks is common, as investors try to figure out a proper valuation. twitter shares fell 7%, $3 from thursday's closing. it will open at $41.65 monday morning, as the new york stock exchange will open on the veterans day holiday. a new effort has been launched to change a trend, a

petition now circulating to reduce rising college costs. lawmakers say the once free university of california has become so expensive that it is unattainable for many families. >> the uc system has seen massive increases in their tuition. it's almost triple what it was a few years ago. it's pricing kids out of college. they no longer can afford it. >> the state senator says there are many ways universities can help lower the cost of the higher education. he says reducing pension costs and reducing uc administrators' salaries would be a good place to start. a church in san leandro is scrambling to come up with food donations after thieves stole contributions. the crime happened at the faith fellowship church. church leaders say someone cut through a locked fence, then got into a locked shed to steal the food they have been saving since august. >> when you are taking food out of people's mouth that really need it, especially at this time of year, it hurts. >> the church says it's done

its best to replenish what was taken, but with thanksgiving less than three weeks away, that church needs more help. the church is asking for donations of nonperishable food items or gift cards. three wild boars caused quite a commotion after getting cornered in a backyard in san ramon. check out the video. it all happened yesterday in a gated community called norris canyon estates, but this was not the first time the wild boars have trampled through the gates. according to wildlife experts, it will not be the last. >> a lot of these neighborhoods, the lawns are extremely wet. that's a huge source of food for the wild pigs, all the grubs that like that wet condition. >> the homeowners association has obtained a special state permit to kill the wild boars. they called in a professional hunter yesterday, who showed up with the crossbow and took out the biggest one. the other two, however, were able to get away, running on down the street. again, experts say they will

. miami dolphins tackle jonathan martin will meet next week with a special nfl investigator looking into that bullying scandal. martin, who went to stanford, accuses teammate ritchie incognito of threatening. the meeting with the nfl investigator will be held in los angeles. incognito flew to l.a. yesterday. this is how he responded as a reporter actually peppered him with questions. >> listen, are you here to meet with jonathan martin? >> uh, at this point, i'm not making a comment. >> are you here to apologize in any way? >> i'm just walking through the airport. >> no, i understand, but are you here to meet with him? did you say you're going to kill him or get his mother? we're just trying to give you a chance to say your side.
