clean up crews were. >> i love oakland, but i think it's overwhelmed. >> reporter: coming up, i'll tell you how one neighborhood came together and despite a warning and took their tree problem into their own hands. john faller, ktvu channel 2 news. the wind was also a challenge for firefighters battling a grass fire in the soda canyon area in napa a county, burning 300 acres off of silverado trail last night. evacuation orders are still in place for dozens of place and may be lifted in an hour or so. one out building was destroyed but authorities with cal fire tell us the winds are beginning to die down and that fire is now 50 percent contained. >> in solano county, the downed power lines may have sparked a five alarm fire over vacaville. firefighters also say the wind made it more difficult to contain the fire. the winds were strong. last night, overnight, and this morning. in fact, parts of the bay area

the rest of the weather team online. they're posting updates to facebook and twitter even when we're not on the air. we'll live you a live look at the evening commute. we'll show you hospital curve in san francisco. the long line of cars all backed up on the far left-hand side of your screen from san francisco on to the bay bridge and work eastward. it is a slow ride tonight. that is because a bart break down forced thousands of people to drive to work instead of take bart this morning. >> and it's not just hospital curb. check out ktvu's traffic map. wherever you see the red. look all the way across the bay bridge all the way up the east shore in emeryville, and wherever you see that red, traffic is at a standstill or moving very slowly. >> and tonight, bart is telling ktvu that a computer upgrade is what caused this morning's problems. the trains were down all morning long, bart told us. full service was you've and running at about 9 a.m..

tom vacar now with what happened and the rider reactions. think about it, between today's massive delays and yesterday's contract debacle, it looks like bart has its own version of the broken bolts problem. >> passengers of hayward, there is no service due to a major computer error. >> a software upgrade that began late last night slowly began interfering with bart's ability to track its trains. >> and the system went off truck around midnight. >> we could a always run the trains but without knowing exactly where the trains are, how far apart where are, it's not comfortable to continue with service. >> it's not like this occurs a lot but it effects a lot of people. >> bart trains were at a cross standing many. >> i have to pay for a cab to get back to oakland right now of

we taken a look at the impact and what bart can do to regain trust. bart may take legal action in the way of the contract glitch. the largest union, seiu says they are researching their options now, that board vote ared to accept the contract but without the -- voted to accept the contract without the six weeks of paid leave. bart chose to severt the collective bargaining progress. their decision to effectively reject the contract they previously agreed to is unacceptable. >> negotiated in good faith, we work with the district, and now they're changing their mind and that is not acceptable. they're putting a lot of stress on the public and the workforce. >> in the meantime, they'll continue to work under the old contract. and the chief negotiator for bart says he was never supposed to be in that contract. thomas hawk said quote when i

president is on the verge of releasing another statement on this hate crimes case because their continues to be new developments. some new developments that we first reported on the 10:00 news. now we have been told that president's message will be they plan to review the case as part of its student conduct process. they're in the midst of that and that could lead to expulsion for the students accused and the 4th young man who sources identified as mark blanchard. san jose state is not naming him because he was a minor at the time. a juvenile has been charged in this case. the district attorney's office a kudzed to confirm or -- refused confirm or deny it. students are trying to still come to terms with it. >> one of the incidents took place in the bedroom not one of the three individuals charged in this case. >> we want justice, what is deserved to happen should happen.

now to new developments in the murder trial of convicted serial killer joseph naso. a marin judge sentenced the 79-year-old to death. this morning sentencing comes three months after he was convicted of murdering four women after a span of two decades. today family and friends expressed relief. >> it's over. she's in a better place. thank god. >> our cameras were outside the courtroom as loved ones hugged and celebrated. you may recall faso represented himself. one family member described his reaction. >> he was flipping off the crowd before it started. he was turning around giving everybody the finger. there's no remorse there. >> i'm glad he lost everything. i'm glad he did. so did we. >> prosecutors say he raped his victims and strangled them and discarded them along rural roads. he turns 80 in january and if

nothing resorts in the tahoe area are heavenly ski reports expected to open tomorrow. it had planned to open today but postponed because of the strong winds we've been reporting. the mountain resort was the first to open this month, kirkwood and north star are continuing to monitor conditions and both hope to open soon. >> i can't wait to get over those winds. the whole neighborhood last power are for hours. i haven't seen anything like that in a while. >> the winds were up to 45 in your neighborhood. last night, instead of being on the hill tops, the winds were right down at sea level, places like oakland and richmond and san raphael. the winds were very strong for many last night. the winds are still blowing, not as strong as last night. we've got 68 degrees in napa, 78 in santa rosa. there's the wind right now, 17-mile an hour wind, 18 miles an hour out of the north.

there's something new at the oakland airport, a new state of the art control tower. like the cal decot tunnel, it

bid and break cast outside this castro district captures -- castro outside, and this victim's wallet and cell phone was stolen. a man came in the seven of a friend search of a friend that was staying there. >> police were called and arrest made within minutes based in part on a description of the speeding vehicle seen here. >> it was a u-haul van. they took three suspects into custody, two adults, one juvenile. long of san francisco faces a fel no ne charge with no bail -- felony charge with no bail, and assault and his bail is seven hundred thousand dollar.

a lot of smile was turned into adoption central today. scombrs workers at the department of family and children's services helped place 48 children into 36 adoptive families. some of them have waited years to have adoptions finalized. >> of course it's wonderful. we're super, super excited that you know after almost two long years that we're finalizing adoption of our kids. >> officials say on national adoption day, courts and communities in all 50 states finalize thousands of adoptions. some 100,000 children are in foster care across the country currently awaiting their families. nine videos have emerged in a controversial competition to encourage young people to buy health insurance. >> i'm king of the world.

a fast moving house fire this morning caught drivers by surprise and ktvu's john is a sack i show -- sasaki shows us how they put themselves in harms way. >> reporter: one woman was the daughter of a former firefighter. from these photos taken by that witness, the flames were very quickly consuming 1/2 of a duplex. the fire start in a two bedroomune sit and consumed the rest -- bedroom unit. before firefighters arrived, her father is retired noticed a sign warning of oxygen in use of the so she helped evacuate some elderly neighbors, one what of whom was bedridden and in a wheelchair. >> i was banging on the door, you guys need to get out, because it was so -- the flames

enough. it's going to get cool, as well. lots going on. in the calendar, dry november, although thankfully we got our rain here and here comes that into wednesday and thursday of next week. so that's in the holiday for many. think about that if you have travel plans or whatever you're planning do. the forecast highs tomorrow, you've got 66 in san raphael, 62 in pacifica, 65 in brentwood. cooler tomorrow than today. less wind tomorrow, but that wind was so blowy today, and the wind won't be as blowy and sinky, so it won't be quite as warm. a cold morning saturday and sunday, and then as you head into next week, we're looking for temperatures to stay a little bit on the mild side then they start to cool pretty rapidly. as we get into the bay area sunday, we've got the titans and 65 degrees there, as well. a really great weekend for outdoor activities around the bay area that deal on wednesday
