computer system completely shut down. i'm frank summerville, and i'm julie haner. the headlights you see are drivers heading toward walnut creek. many commuters are driving home after a computer meltdown forced people to find an alternate way home. on interstate 80 through berkeley, it's usually a busy time of night but this friday night it's even more crowded. >> and we're learn morgue tonight about the computer problem. bart says a software upgrade that began late last night slowly started interfering with bart's ability to track its trains. by midnight, the entire system was down. >> never was train safety compromised. we could always run the trains but without knowing how far apart they are, it wasn't comfortable to move on with service. >> training didn't run until

after 8:00 this morning. four hours late, but the damage was already done. and this is just the latest trouble for bart. the transit agency has dealt with a series of problem this is year include it would go strikes and even a train fire. >> ktvu's alex savage in oakland with a push back for riders and how bart might be able to repair its tarnished image. bart certainly in a lot of trouble that computerish snarled this morning's commute -- computer issue snarled many people's attitude. bart is still in a lot of trouble. >> i'd be on the alternative if there was one. >> many riders are ready to hop off the train for good. kelly jackson says two strikes and then today's system shut down is about all she can take. >> they've broken the three strike rule so i'm looking for an alternate solution

permanently. >> engineers were looking to fix the issue that triggered the system wide outage but the more difficult job is repairing bart's battered image. >> bart has to set the reset button. >> his contract ended earlier this year. he says bart is on shaky ground but should be able to bounce back. >> they've got to not make any more errors and communicate with the public to overcome what's going on now. >> bart says ridership numbers remain strong overall. but spokeswoman alicia trost says the timing couldn't be worse. >> we can understand it's extremely frustrating to show up at a bart station and behold no train service yet again. it's been a long year for bart. we understand the frustration. >> she spent a couple hours stuck on a stopped train overnight and the entrepreneur is now thinking about moving out

considering the options and going to court is one of them. >> that's why we're talking to our legal team about, doing some research. this has never happened before so this is all brand-new ground. >> reporter: union leaders say workers will stay on the job working under the old contract until a decision is made. continuing coverage now, a 4th student was suspended today for his alleged involvement in a hate crime on the san jose state university campus. three others were suspended yesterday and one of those students has already been booked now on criminal charges. roberedert handa is live. >> reporter: the san jose state university president just issued a statement. it's a message that at this point, did not include a direct reference to the anti-semitic attacks, something many people should be addressed, as well. as we reported at 5:00, the

president's message talks about four students being suspended and under a process that could lead them to be expelled from the entire system and an overhaul of the 0 tolerance policy to include racism and diversity training. nothing addressing the antisemetricantise metric antisemetic accusations. >> bigger than just race then? >> yes, i think it was one that was unfriendly to any nonchristian white. >> it's under the same umbrella. it is -- you're discriminating against something they can't control and it's unfortunate. >> what happened was just not a mishap but i think there is that possibility of it being resolved, that it could make the campus a better place and it's a learning experience for

everyone. >> reporter: now university officials tell me that it will begin adding programs aimed at religious tell rens. the prosecutors says -- tolerances. they said it would not lead to any additional charges. a daycare worker was sentenced today to 30 years to life in prison. 27-year-old keith woodhouse was found guilty of crimes dating back to 2010. prosecutors say he abused nine children at two daycare programs at san jose elementary school. investigators say he touched the girls under their clothing, some of whom were as young as five years old. some of the victim's families were in court today and they said they are satisfied with that sentence. san francisco police have arrested a man accused of robbing a woman and then throwing her little dog right into on coming traffic. 36-year-old verr are ett of south san francisco is facing

felony charges of robbery and animal cruelty. we brought you the story when the victim said she pulled her car over to use her cell phone in the tener loind neighborhood of san francisco -- tenderloin neighborhood and then got angry because her small dog named roxy was barking, he threw it out of the car. >> there was no reason for the suspect to harm the dog from accounts of the incident. he had the personal property of the victim and returned to kill the dog. >> the dog was hit by an on coming car. its injuries were so severe that little arrive oxy had to be put down. >> the state department said it hasn't confirmed herril newman of palo alto. he was detained from a tourist trip last month.

they are communicating on behalf of the u.s. and is requesting visits with newman. today we heard from his wife for the first time. in a statement, lee new man said there is some dreadful misunderstanding leading to his detention and asked that north korean government work to settle this issue quickly. e varg way orders are set -- evacuation orders near the silverado fire in napa county, the fire started off the silverado canyon area about 9:30 last night. at one point threatening about three 50 homes. one out building has been destroyed. right now, firefighters say it's about 70% contained. sheriff's officials suspect downed power line may be to blame. there are a handful of other fires, near geyserville has grown to two thousand files, and

mendocino county and burned about one 20 acres. fire crews have that contained. one man was killed near foot hills boulevard and took power lines with. it another man was killed while driving. authorities say he swerved to avoid debris in the road and ran into a tree. all day public works crews have been scrambling to clear the fallen trees and power lines. people couldn't wait for the city crews to help them out. john? >> reporter: we're in the rock ridge neighborhood of oakland whereabouts leaders say today they were -- where business leaders say they were forced to fend for temz from 1:30 this -- themselves, from 1:30 this morning, this tree blocked this avenue, and by the sunny afternoon, business owners were angry. >> there is no people here

because they cannot go through the street. yet there it lay. >> i'm surprised no one's here sooner because this is really an important street. people go to bart and school and stores. >> frustrated business owners say they called the city public works and police. they knew city crews were overwhelmed just yards away. a huge eucyluptus knocked out power. >> kind of through the whole neighborhood for a loop. >> within six blocks we counted five large trees down. >> back on college avenue after waiting 12 hours, rock ridge market hall rolled out its forklift to clear the street. >> city of oakland told me tonight touch, but here in rock ridge we have to work as a family and as a team. >> reporter: they reopened college avenue in time for late afternoon shoppers and diners. business owners declined to estimate what the delays cost

6:00, there have been eight break-ins and some wineries are stepping up security measures. we went to sonomo county to find out what makes a wine tasting room a desirable target. here, someone is breaking into tasting rooms but they're not stealing any bottles of wine. >> as far as i know, they didn't even taste any wine. >> this is one of 8 wineries that have been hit since september and three just in the past week. the sonomo sheriff's department is investigating the string of burglaries. >> they tried to jimmy through here and it's kind of broken up, but it was it was fairly easy access once they knocked through the window. >> the break-in here happened last week. the office got the worst television, as these -- worst of it, amist two checks were missing. >> we were concerned about what

was missing, and we noticed very little money because we don't really keep money here, mostly paper transactions. >> the tasting room was also breached, the wine was untouched, but a small amount of cash was taken from the register. winery owners say they believe whoever is doing this is mostly interested in collecting credit card information that may be kept in files. at least one wine association put out an alert. >> make sure your windows are closed, and staff is aware of all surrounds. >> the wineries asked for more patrol. this is the first time anyone can remember a string of break-ins. >> it breaks you a little bit more aware, i guess, is the main thing, and you know, not in a good way, either. >> at the time of the break-in, the winery didn't have an alarm system. it does now. in sonomo county, rob ross, channel 2 news. the santa clara sheriff's office released new details

about a woman who was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy. a sheriff's spokesman says this is the knife that woman was holding when a deputy shot and killed her last sunday. they say 61-year-old andrea used the knife to threaten the deputy on cleveland avenue. the deputy has been with the sheriff's office for three years. >> a state senator from santa rosa is pushing a gun law one month after the death of andy lopez. lopez was carry egg toy gun that looked very -- carrying a toy gun when he was shot and kill who'd mistook it for a real gun. the use of bee bee guns, toy guns and other guns, under the proposed bill, they would have to be painted a bright color to distinguish them from real guns.

pixar is laying off employees in emeryville. the movie animation studio hasn't said how many people are losing jobs but apparently it's because of the delay of pixar's next film called the good dinosarr. dinosaur. it has had to reassign support priporities which led to -- priorities which effects less than 5% of the 1,200-person workforce. the sea which is california's largest body of water is shrinking, located in southern california, south of cowhich he will a -- cochella and palm springs. it's been exposed to desert winds and will effect air quality. the audit also says the salt and sea restoration fund has only a fraction of the money needed for mitigation projects. continuing coverage on that windstorm. pg&e crews have made significant

progress getting power back on after the strong winds downed trees and power lines across the bay area. about 4,500 customers are without power in the east bay down to 2,400 in the north bay. 12 customers in the south bay, and 12 in san francisco, and on the peninsula are still in the dark. those numbers are a big drop from when we reported them at 5:00 when more than 23,000 people were still without power. and here's a look at the power of laugh night's wind. this is at world gas on dlat -- power of last night's wind. it was knocked over around 6:30. the owner called a crew out to repair the sign. there were numerous reports of tree down throughout concord. >> fortunately the winds are dying down. >> bill martin is tracking the conditions. >> the wind advisory's still in effect for the marin county, hills of the north bay, if you

will. the wind gusts from last night, you'll get the picture it was 65 in oakland hills, 53 in santa rosa, some more wind gusts. now we're back at sea level in oakland, 46 miles an hour, 46 in san leandro, and we had all the trees down. winds are still blowing out there, still in the 15-17-mile an hour range and gusts are still in the north bay occurring to 25 miles an hour. a little less down in this part of the bay. into the evening part of the temperatures are really going to cool down. in these high temperatures, they're about as warm as they'll be for a while because the air will start to not sink as it had. the air won't be sinking as much tomorrow. they'll still be a breeze but not as much as today. tomorrow's a few degrees cooler. and into next week, wednesday, thursday, a chance for a few

showers. forecast overnight lows in the mid-overnight 30s. this pressure center's going to weaken a little bit if relationship to that low so wind speeds are going to tick down. so today down to 30 miles an hour, but by saturday down to 15 miles an hour. cool overnight lows, 64 in fairfield, 64 in antioch. these are the forecast highs for your saturday. 69 in santa rosa, 65 in san francisco. and santa clara valley, lots of mid-and upper 60s. still a nice day, and if you looked out and saw the sunset, these winds really clean at the atmosphere. we have super good air quality. tomorrow will be a great day to go to the top of diablo. can you probably see shasta from diablo tomorrow. sunday, 65 degrees for the titans, and big game in stanford's going on, as well, and they're going to have mid-60s for that game, as well. the bay area weekend decreasing winds, that leads to very cool

everyone's saying if cal wins, i'll buy you fill in the blank here, i don't think it's going to happen tomorrow. it would be, and i don't think this is a really eggaration. to say that stanford is heavily favored would be an under statement. cal have not won a pac 12 game all year n. fact, they've won only once all season. the cardinals, meanwhile, match up score was only 21-3. cal hasn't won since 2009 and the cardinal, even after their game last week still in line for a possible bcs bowl game. they've won 24 of the last 25
