good morning everyone, welcome to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. we'll get you over to rosemary orozco to talk about this chilly morning. >> you're right. it is very cold in some areas. even freezing for some. we're talking about the north bay inland valley locations where i'm tracking sub-freezing temperatures in a few locations, also with a little patchy fog. the winds have relaxed. i'll talk about where we are seeing some fog this morning. mostly sunny for your afternoon. i'll have the numbers for your neighborhood and we are still tracking the possibility of some rain on thanksgiving. the models are trending a little drier. the latest coming up. happening today, st. anthony's is continuing to make sure to help those in need. allie rasmus is live in san francisco to tell us why donations are especially

important this year. allie? >> the need is greater this year. there are more people unable to put food on the table. >> we have 165 turkeys. >> st. anthony's foundation curve side turkey donation is in full swing. volunteers were accepting frozen turkeys all day yesterday. they plan to be out here today. yesterday the largest came in a u-haul truck, 165 turkeys. they plan on serving 4,000 meals on thanksgiving day. that's 500 more than last year. >> anyone on food stamps is probably short. anywhere from five to six meals a month depending on the scenarios. we're expecting big numbers. >> reporter: in the meantime in oakland yesterday, the line of people stretched around the block for a free turkey in that

city. they handed out 1,500 free turkeys for those to cook in time for thanksgiving dinner. it's the time of the year they need to step up their efforts to bring in donations to prepare for the busy holiday season and thanksgiving and christmas. and back here starting at 9:00, volunteers at st. anthony's will have everything set up here. they'll have everything set up on the curb, a tent with volunteers out here waiting to accept frozen turkeys to drive up and drop them off. the goal this year is for st. anthony's to collect 1,000 turkeys in time for thanksgiving day. allie rasmus, channel 2 news. the u.s. announces a major breakthrough over their nuclear program. the secretary of the state talked about the deal by shaking hands with the foreign ministers in switzerland. iran and six world powers including the u.s., britain, china, germany, they spent days hashing out the agreement.

described as a first step aimed at halting certain levels of the uranium enrichment. many return a portion of their overseas bank accounts, they will be unfrozen and trade restrictions will be eased. it will make our partners in the region safer. it'll make our allies, israel, safer. >> but they call the aagreement a historic mistake that they do not stop it from developing a nuclear weapon. president obama told the american people that the deal places substantial limitations on iran and cuts off their most likely pass to obtaining the bomb. >> i've said it many times. my strong preference is to resolve this peacefully. president obama says that they

must stop work at the reactor and allow international inspectors to check its nuclear facilities. happening today, the president is heading out west. he'll leave washington in just a few hours, scheduled to land at 4:00 this afternoon. the president will raise money before flying to the bay area tomorrow. he is going to discuss the immigration reform during the trip to the recreation center. he's going to speak at the fundraiser. it'll be his 9th trip in the bay area in just the past two and a half years. they're going to fly tomorrow night for the economic event scheduled for tuesday at the dream works animation studios. soon to pay for a full coverage of the west coast visit. continuing coverage on the deadly storm threatening to cause problems for millions of thanksgiving travelers. the storm is blamed for the death of eight people in the southwest as they move towards the east coast. the high winds, snow, freezing rain and ice have caused deadly

accidents. crews were forced to bring in a busy crane in order to remove that large pine tree. the city of oakland received close to 200 calls for the service to handle the down trees or power lines. firefighters are trying to put out a wildfire that continues to burn in the area of the county. they've grown to 3,000 acres and 25% contained. it started early morning and rapidly spread because of the strong winds and the dry brush. they have not received enough rain for the couple of years. >> i'm told an inch and a half at most. but you look at the ground and you couldn't tell it rained.

we're able to obtain video showing the cooling tower bursting into flames as it was filled with soul far that passed on through making it flammable. the fire is 100% contained. burning 190 acres, which is down from the original estimate of 300. they started thursday night. and about 50 homes were briefly evacuated. detectives are trying to identify a young man shot to death. they received 911 calls about the person shot at the express way. when officers arrived, they found the victim dead. police had not found any identification on him. as they were shot at least once and appeared to be between 18

to 20 years of age. >> at this point we cannot confirm the gang eninvolvement that has anything to do with it. i'm sure they will determine that more significantly. >> and they're in a residential neighborhood and next to the elementary school, investigators say they are looking for witnesses to come forward. san jose police, they may soon be getting a bump in pay. they'll begin voting on' -- on a new contract, restoring the 10% pay cut from three years ago. they're trying to stop the flow of officers leaving from the other agencies and cities, offering better compensation packages. it runs on tuesday until december 23. tomorrow, they will plan to demonstrate against the death crime. hundreds of thousands will be protesting on thursday. they say that the charges against four white students, they should be elevated to felonies. they're accused of yelling racial slurs, showing the

rooms, clamping the bicycle lock around his neck. it's for at least three. new this morning, threatening to shut down the port of oakland this week. they have voted for a work stoppage on wednesday. they want to offset the cost of the new standards that will go into effect in january. the association claims that 800 port truckers will lose their jobs because they cannot afford the expensive outbreak. drivers were given plenty of warnings about the changes, saying most of the trucks are already upgraded. thanksgiving week is already here. we're starting off the top of the newscast. a little chilly. >> yes, even a little patchy fog on out there. for some falling to about freezing this morning. even a few degrees below. but we're getting to see the temperatures, they will rebound just slightly. the sun is up as we are with

39 -- sunnyvale is looking at 39. low 40s reported in pittsburg as well. and the wind has been allowed to calm down as we have this system here, parked right about here. the pressure grading between the two driving the winds over the last few days. but the distance is becoming a little bit wider and again the ridge of high pressure is in control of the weather pattern for the next couple of days. for the afternoon, temperatures are under mostly sunny skies. low 650s for berkeley. and for san jose, 63 for you this afternoon and mountainview. and so you are looking at 65 in santa cruz along the coast.

welcome back. giving you a beautiful golden view of the sun coming up. a little east bay hill. temperatures in the mid-30s to the mid-40s around the bay. new this morning a wrinkle in the the relationship between the u.s. and afghanistan. afghan leader is refusing to sign a deal with the u.s. that would keep american troops in afghanistan beyond next year. he says that he disagrees with the recommendation of the assembly of the afghan elders,

endorsing the security pact. he said he wants to keep negotiating with the u.s. and indicated to the group olders that there is not -- elders that there is not much trust that the deal must be signed by the end of the year or the american troops will pull out of the country. it's likely the olympics for service members and bay area soldier proved the medal in the best warrior competition. the sergeant the first class was named non-commission officer of the year. the 10-year vet excelled in a competition including military drills, assemblying a pistol. he said he decided to compete to deal with the traumatic brain injury during the deployment last year in afghanistan. the ski season is officially underway. joining us on the phone this morning, talking about the opening weekend and good morning. the people have skied,

season. >> you know that's good. it's one of those things. and you get the big snow early and then it goes away earlier. how are you feeling this season in terms of keeping it going for a nice long snowboarding season? >> you know i think this season, looking into the whole season it was good. that's according to a few forecast. maybe not a heavy start of snow like we've had last year, but consistent with the snowfall. you know, we're already up to six yesterday. so already it is kind of growing and expanding as far as the open train goes. >> all right, thank you so much for joining us this morning on mornings on 2. all right, well the ski resort has announced they are going to open for them tomorrow morning. some photos sent in by that resort. they've been busy preparing for days. they'll have a solitude lifted

up. it'll be the 4th for them to open. a new report finds fewer californians will travel this thanksgiving. more than 5.1 will travel 50 miles or more this thanksgiving holiday, which is a 4% decrease from last year. more than 4 million will plan to drive. and while others, they're finding other forms of transportation. excuse me, according to sfo, the busiest travel day was on friday. it's what's always the busy day before thanksgiving. aaa says that they are more afford this year and they will continue to drop. the average in northern california will stand at $3.53 a gallon. down about $0.24 compare today last month. they're down this year thanks to a light hurricane season. the drivers are paying an average of $3.64. in oakland it is $3.65. in san jose, they're paying

around $3.51 to fill up. a new location to build their new 777 jet. and california could be a possibility. they began soiliest fitting the bids to build the new plane. long beach is among the dozen cities competing for the deal. they hope to make a final decision by early next year. in the meantime they're alerting airlines about the possible engine icing problems on some of the new planes. they're recommending the planes with each specific general electric engine avoid flying near thunderstorms that might contain the ice crystals. they say that they issued that advisory after the ice crystal formation in some instances diminished the engine performance. airlines with the planes affected include united, new numbers show that they sold more than $1 -- 1 million console on the first day. surpassing the sales of the

you have it from noon until 6:30 p.m. children will be able to meet their favorite disney characters and several bay area choirs will also be there to perform. well what do dennis rodman, miley cyrus and president obama have in common? well they all just made gq's new least influential celebrity. former nba basketball player dennis rodman is at the top of the list. celebrity chef, they ranked second and singer miley cyrus is not too far behind. the magazine ranked president obama number 17 on the list. and said it was because, "nothing gets done." well according to a new poll, the major admitted to smoking crack cocaine is more popular than congress and president obama. and the poll was taken just two days after the toronto city council stripped the mayor of his power. and they found that they still have a 42% approval rating according to the recent poll. congress has an approval rating of 9%. president obama's approval

rating is at an all-time low of 39%. it is thanksgiving week as we have precipitation possibly moving in. and people are wondering if they are traveling what to expect when they get on the planes, you guess. >> you're right. it's a draw back to the rain as it becomes messy along the drive for the airlines. and in that possibility, it is actually beginning to scale back. i'm a little bummed about that. we'll get to the forecast in just one moment. 32 right now. one of the colder spots this morning and right at freezing. 48 for san francisco. a huge difference there as we get into oakland, concord, upper 30 expz the lower 40s -- upper 30s and the lower 40s. it is going to become a little more comfortable on out there. widespread 50s in the forecast into the 10:00 hour. for most of the afternoon, low 60s. with most of us right there at about upper 50s to the lower 60s n time for your lunch hour and -- in time for your lunch

hour and the afternoon and the everyoning hours, they were cooling off quickly once again with the sun setting at 4:53. 8:00 a.m. on wednesday, the system is still off the coast as we get into wednesday night and thursday, notice how the rain moves south rather than moving east. so this is something new. yesterday the models were bringing rain into the area by thanksgiving, which is now changing. but we are still just a few days out as they could change again. we'll believe in that possibility of showers in time for wednesday as well as thanksgiving day between now and then we'll be dry and relatively mild in the afternoon with 60s in the forecast. back to you. >> all right, thank you. they received calls from across the world. the chester county in philadelphia, they have finally been adopted into a new home. they went viral after this photo was posted online of one dog cuddling his brother who was blind. and people from as far away as south africa and australia

start at 10:00. but as we said, it will be much busier here. live in san francisco, allie rasmus, channel 2 news. here is a look at some of the top stories for you this morning, a deadly storm causing problems for millions of thanksgiving travelers this week. that storm is now being blamed for the deaths of eight people in the southwest. the wildfire will continue to burn in that area of the county. consuming about 3,000 acres, only 25% contained. the area remains windy and dry despite their rain. crews as far away as san diego are helping in the fire fight. police are trying to identify the man shot to death. they can get a shot of it at least once, described to be in their early 20s this year. they believe the items started

that fire. and they began early yesterday morning on the two-story building. no one injured. the building was destroyed and damaged. the fire in san francisco is also being investigated. it happened yesterday afternoon where they responded to the fire as they were able to keep it confined between two buildings. the fire was out in just about 45 minutes. they are in between, touching up there. and so if it gets to one building, it will usually go to the next building. >> they were also worried about the nearby gas line, but they quickly closed it off for residence displaced, being helped by the red cross. no one injured. they're investigating the cause of the deadly crash. it happened just before 3:30 yesterday afternoon at the regional park. and the chp said that the 34- year-old lloyd was killed when

the motorcycle and a car crashed. it took about four hours to get the road back open. in san francisco, power was knocked down after a part of the building under construction collapsed, along with their scaffolding. it happened yesterday morning in the city's uphill neighborhood. fire crews, they say that the construction workers were in the process of demolishing the building when the accident happened. no one hurt and the fire department spokesperson says it is still unclear what caused that collapse. and police, they are looking for a missing teenager, the 17-year-old who was reported missing from her home at about 6:30 on friday night. her family said she recently sent text messages making them concerned that she may be suicidal. she's about 110 pounds. anyone with information is asked to call the daily city police department. concerns about violence and bullying. they called the meeting between

the three girls posted on youtube as they report being bullied before that fight. and the public meeting, they will be held at livonia middle school in richmond at 6:30 p.m. on december 2. the state investigation was ordered over the summer, but pushed back several times when the 20-year- old gunman killed the mother and then went to sandy hook elementary school where they killed 26 students, adults, before turning the gun on himself. the report is expected at lanza's house. connecticut officials say to protect the victims and their families, some of the evidence will never be made public. there is a concert tonight to benefit the victims of hurricane haiyan. the light on the street in san francisco as they will have members of the opera. the proceeds is going through

a live view outside with the fog there. it doesn't look too widespread, but it is very thick in some areas with a shot earlier of the bridge. and it was a little thick, getting across. so take it easy out there if you do have an early morning drive. as he said, you may need the thicker jacket. we're talking about 32. they are also reporting 32 degrees this morning and 33 in napa, which is the coolest spots. you can see around the bay, low to mid to upper 40s and areas like oakland and san francisco and redwood city. it is cold here. we've got temperatures in the 30s. 38 in lafayette. 37 in walnut creek. fairfield checking in this evening. so it's mostly clear skies for them in the overnight hours.

it's a sunny start this morning. a chilly start here as well with temperatures in the 60s for the afternoon. well it's an interesting flight this morning and with police boarding the plane, removing the unruly passenger. they started arguing with the flight attendants. why police were trying to remove them. they started yelling a bomb on the plane, taken to the hospital to be evaluated. karen was just 19 years old

when she was killed. at the time she was interning here at ktvu, a student as she works as a life guard. this week her family and friends, nay will once again honor her memory by giving to others in her name. it was here at the plunge that she found a second home. and as a life guard. and those are still remembering the joy she brought. >> her smile, it always had a good attitude. she was smart. she was energetic, and a pleasure to be with. >> reporter: it was in 2001 a few days after thanksgiving on the 19th birthday. that the tragedy struck. one of the drivers of the stolen vehicle being chased by police lost control. >> they were chasing it. she was going to work. car went over the median and slammed sight in. >> reporter: but in the month that fold her death, the legacy was born. >> reporter: when she passed

away, we started getting money from our patrons. i don't know the total amount, but it was in the thousands. we were thinking okay what should we do with the money? >> so the karen gordon scholarship was created. >> it's sad because you wish the scholarship wasn't there and you feel guilty. >> reporter: in the past 12 years, much has changed. the children she talk to are now in college. the woman convicted in her death was released last year. and her parents are getting ready for retirement. while the loss is still profound, this year they will come together again for the scholarships, to remember the smile and to honor the life she lived. her father said she would have loved knowing she could still give even though she's gone.

>> young adults with the spirit, the care, the kindness. >> reporter: the hayward plunge will hold a swim on thanksgiving morning to recognize the scholarship recipients to raise money for next year's scholarships. all right, thank you. starting tomorrow, volunteers, they'll be handing out to thousands of families in need. they've been collecting turkeys all week to provide for 4,000 families as they are still accepting the turkey donations. they are registered for the holiday boxes earlier this month as pickup will begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. and continue until wednesday. new questions, they're being raised about whether or not the state fair that checked the background of the woman running the castro valley nursing home accused of abandoning the residents. last month more than a dozen were sick. and they were left abandoned after the state shut down the valley springs manor.

the owner had a history of fines and complaints against her dating back to the 1990s when the previous business shut down, she applied for a new license. but the report says that she lied on her application and never indicated that she had owned the facility in the past. next november, voters in alameda county will once again be asked to vote on the sales tax hike to pay for the road and the transit improvements. and measure b1 was nearly defeated last year, raising the transportation sales tax by half a cent and the measure for the november 2014 ballot is being proposed from the singing and the transportation project at the 2012 measure. and tomorrow they're expected to decide on leasing a part of the city's airport to hayward. and based on the five rivers aviation, which would act as the site operator on site, providing maintenance. they are expect today approve the 35-year contract.

and the post office is announcing the price of the first class stamp, going up by one cent to 47 cents. the new rate will kick in on january 26 and this will be the second year in a row and the price of stamp haves gone up and the commission, they are still considering another increase that would bring stamps to $0.49 each. changes, they're coming to a well-known daily city -- daily city restaurant. they will close it for about a year for upgrades. the restaurant has been around since 1950s, holding a special place in the hearts of the countless people around the bay area. >> they used to donate all the food. a lot of money for the schools. a lot of the people work here. we know the owners. we've been here for a long time. i don't think that they could be in that place. >> reporter: they plan to close

february 7. a popular spot in australia is still closed after a 35-year- old man was killed. the victim who the australian media is identifying is chris boyd, a father of two who died on the beach in western australia. he was with another surfer when it happened. marine officers are now in the area with shark catching equipment. police say he was attacked by a great white and died instantly. happening now nearly 8,000 runners are getting ready to take off berkeley's first half marathon. the run will get underway in just about five minutes from now and they will take winners from the uc berkeley campus on and around the water front. money raised from this event is going to go to 11 local charities. california is changing its standardized testing plan after being faced with the threat of losing billions of dollars in federal funds. state officials now say that they will be require today take the new standardized tests in both english and math this spring. the previous plan was to test those students in english and

we'll kick the hour off with rosemary. good morning to you. >> good morning to you if you are going out to the farmer's market as it is freezing out there for some. and some of those low lying areas around the valley floor and a cold start. where we do have moisture air, the patchy foggy start as we will take a look at what's going on around your neighborhood. mostly sunny skies for the afternoon and widespread 60s for the second half of the day. the next best chance for the rain is still coming up right around thanksgiving with the latest on the future cast model coming up. new this morning the potential blow to the bay area economy. and the truckers association, they are threatening to shut down the operations at the port of oakland this week. they're voted for the work stoppage set for wednesday. the group wants financial relief to offset the cost of new clean air standards that will go into effect in january. the association claims that 800 truckers will lose their jobs because they cannot afford the

expensive upgrades. drivers were given plenty of warnings about the changes and that the trucks, they're already upgraded. some families that lost loved ones are accusing the medical examiner's office of furthering the pain as they tell the chronical that they have been forced to wait months and in some cases more than a year to receive the death certificates stating the cause of death. and they report that the backlog of the cases in the office, a that they had about 8023 -- 802 pending numbers that were at least three months old and that they could prevent families from resolving the insurance setment funds. the tentative deal will restore a 10% pay cut from three years ago as they are trying to stop the flow of the officers leaving for the other agencies and the cities that offer packages. as they run on tuesday until december 3. investigators are trying to

identify a young man shot to death in a park next to an elementary school. but yesterday afternoon police dispatchers received 911 calls about a person shot near interstate 680 and the expressway. when they arrived, they found that the victim was already dead. they say she was shot at least once and it appears to be between 18 to 20 years of age. >> at this point we cannot confirm the gang involvement has anything to do with it. but i'm sure that the investigation will determine that more significantly. >> it's in a residential neighborhood next to an elementary school. investigators say they are looking for witnesses to come forward. tomorrow, the naacp plans to demonstrate against the alleged hate crime at san jose state. hundreds of students held a similar protest on thursday. they say that the misdemeanor charges against four white students, accused of yelling racial slurs, barricading their roommates and their rooms,

this morning they are announcing a major breakthrough. secretary state john kerry talked about the deal. iran, and six world powers including the u.s., britain, china, and germany spent days hashing out that agreement it's described as a first step, aimed at halting several levels, neutralizing a part of the stockpile. in return a portion of iran's overseas bank accounts will be unfrozen and trade restrictions will be eased up. it will make our partners in the region safer. it'll make our allies, israel safer. but the prime minister calls the agreement a historic mistake. saying it does not stop iran from developing a nuclear weapon. however, he told the american people that the deal plays a substantial limitation on iran and cuts off if most likely passed. the u.s. resolved around their

giving you a view into san francisco. where we have calm conditions, a little patchy fog. a town torn apart by a deadly tornado is coming together. it's one of the areas hardest hit by last week's series of the tornadoes. yesterday the panthers of washington high school, they took them on in the state semi- final football games. almost the entire community, they came out through the game for them to take their minds on off the devastation of the last few days. it's something to look forward to. we all knew that we could get away from it just one day.

skiing season. well next month, they will vote on the controversial proposal allowing people to talk on their cell phones on the airplanes. only above 10,000 feet as they personally don't like the plan and they say that there are no technical reasons to ban them on the planes. it is also against the idea as they say installing new equipment to allow for the clear call, causing up to $4 million. this is potentially a multi- billion dollar industry. for the cell phone companies and the device manufacturers. >> and they are probably flying up in the air as we don't want any kind of situation that could increase any ability for them. if approved, it'd be up to the individual airlines to provide services to the

happening today, the shortage of the thanksgiving staple. welcome back to mornings on 2, i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. volunteers at st. anthony's, they are already hard at work to make sure that families in need have a great thanksgiving. allie rasmus is live for us in san francisco where the curb side turkey donation drive is up and running. allie? >> reporter: that's right, they have rinsed off the parking lots. at 9:00 this morning, volunteers, they'll be on out here ready to collect the frozen turkeys as a part of st. anthony's foundation and the annual turkey drop off. now, thanksgiving, they're still just four days away with a peek inside the kitchen here this morning as they are already working on the thanksgiving meal. including chopped carrots and celery and the kettles that will be served on thanksgiving day. what they will still need now

are turkeys as they plan to serve about 4,000 meals. that's 500 more than last year. and the representatives say that the need is greater this year because of several things. federal cuts to the food stamp programs, increasing cost of the san francisco and the fact that thanksgiving, it will be at the very end of the month. so yesterday they collected about 423 turkeys. and the goal is to collect about 1,000 turkeys. again, they'll have volunteers on out here at the curb starting at 9:00. so they could just drive up and drop off the turkey and be on their way to help about 4,000 people enjoy that meal here in san francisco. live in san francisco, ktvu channel 2 news. donations are pouring in through the sacramento church after thieves broke in and stole 20 turkeys from all the fixings. church officials say that they broke a gym window on friday and they made off with all that food. and so they need to put their

food. and over the weekend they've been donating whatever they could. which will include a new freezer with a lock on it. and this is not the first turkey in the area. last week at the non-profit in fairfield, they had all their turkey stolen. we have new information this morning on the fire in burlingame. we first reported it for you at 2:00. firefighters believe that the flammable items near a heater started that fire. which began early yesterday morning on the first floor of the two-story building. no one injured. and the building was destroyed though and another building next door had damage. fire in san francisco to the neighborhood that is also being investigated as they started just after 2:30 yesterday afternoon at sacramento and locus. more than 100 firefighters responded to the fire as they were able to keep the confinement between two buildings as the fire was out about 45 minutes. and they are all wood buildings. things you can see here for them in between, but the building has been set up for us right there and they will get

into one building as they will need to go to the next. and the firefighters say that they were also worried about the nearby gas line, but that pg&e crews, they quickly closed it off for residents that were displaced are being helped by the red cross, no one injured. in san francisco a light pole was knock down after a part of the building collapsed along with their scaffolding. it happened yesterday morning on the street in the lower neighborhoods. the fire crews said that they were in the process of demolishing that building when the accident happened. no one was hurt in the fire department spokesperson that said they are still unclear on what caused that collapse. well concerns about the violence in boeing and the county schools, they're going to be addressed at the public meeting next month. the school district will call for the meeting after the fight at the high school between three girls and the transgender student was posted on youtube. the transgender student had reported being bullied before that fight. and the public meeting will be held at livonia middle --

livonia middle school at 6:00 p.m. a newtown school shooting will come out tomorrow. the state investigation was suspected over the summer, but pushed back several times. last december, adam lanza killed his mother and went to sandy hook elementary school where he killed 26 students and adults before turning the gun on himself. the report expected to include the school photos and pictures of lanza's house. to protect victims and their families, some of the evidence were never going to be made public. the virginia senator is out of the hospital after being stabbed by his son on tuesday morning. and the 24-year-old then shot and killed. and the issues when they were released. and that they were tweeted alive. and that there will be some words for them to heal. and that will be happening next year for them.

the 19th birthday that the tragedy struck. when the driver of the stolen vehicle, being chased by police, they lost control. >> they were chasing it. karen was going the other way to work. the car went over the median. >> reporter: but in the months that fold her death, her legacy was born. >> and when she passed away, we started getting money from our patrons. and i don't know the total amount, but it was in the thousands. and we were just thinking, okay, what should we do with this money? >> reporter: and so the karen gordon scholarship was created, given to two recipients every year to help with the college and the career goal. this year, crystal scott, she'll receive more to help her achieve her dream of becoming a miracle. >> it's sad. because you know, you kind of wish that the scholarship wasn't there and you feel guilty. >> reporter: in the past 12 years, much has changed. the children she talked to are now in college. the woman convicted in her

death were released last year. and her parents, they are getting ready for retirement. while the loss is still profound, this year, they will come together again for the scholarships. her father says that she would have loved knowing that she could still give even though she's gone. >> and the young adults, who will embody what she was all about and the spirit and the care and the kindness. and the plunge is going to hold on thanksgiving morning for the scholarship recipients to raise money for next year's scholarships. earlier this month the olympic torch took a trip to the international space station today. in the world's deepest body of fresh water as a part of the run off. and the torch, they took a dive into the lake. the 39,000 mile torch relay began on october 7 and it's the

longest olympic history. the torch will light up the olympic flame and to kick off the game on february 7. a popular search spot in australia is closed after a 35- year-old man was killed by a shark. the victim that has not been identified has died on the beach in western australia. he was with another surfer when it happened. the marine officers are now in the area with the shark catching equipment. it's not clear what type of shark attack was surfaced up. but there's a lot of great whites in that area. the zumba instructor who plead guilty to running a prostitution ring out of her gym is now out of jail. the 29-year-old alexis wright was released yesterday from a jail in maine. she was released early for good behavior and participating in a work program. she served nearly six months of the 10-month sentence as a part of her sentence, she was also ordered to pay more than $57,000 in restitution and $1,000 in fines. next november voters will once again be asked to vote on the sales tax hike to pay for the road and the transit

improvements. nearly defeated last year, raising the transportation sales tax by half a cent. the measure for the ballot, it is being proposed to fund that same transportation project area as the 2012 measure. well tomorrow the city council is expected to decide about leasing a part of their airport to five rivers aviation. and they would provide maintenance and other pilots. the city council is expected to approve that 35-year contract as they say that they will need to help them meet the needs of the travelers. a cost of mailing the letter is about to go up. they have announced the price of the first class stamps, where they will go up by a penny to 47 cents. the new rain will kick in on january 6, which will be the second year in a row that the price of stamps have gone up. they're still considering another increase as well, which will bring them to 49. change is coming to a well- known daily city restaurant.

joe's west lake is getting a new owner. they will plan to close the italian eatery for 20 years. it's been around since the 1950s, holding a special place in the hearts of the countless people living around the bay area. >> and they used to give and donate all the food for the dinners at the churches with a lot of money for the schools. we know a lot of the people that work here and the owners. we've been here for a long time. i don't think that they could be ignored. >> they plan to close on january 26 and it's expected to stay closed until some time early 2015. the closure is expected to put about 100 restaurant employees on out of work. the hunger games catching fire is being called one of the hottest movies at this weekend's box office. it's expected to bring in about $150 million of their

well the convenience store in high park, utah is making history. for the first time in 153 years, it's selling beer. alcohol sales have been banned in the town of about 4,000 people since founded by mormon settlers in 1860. that law has changed earlier this month when headers headed to the polls. they only sell beer. anyone wanting liquor or wine still need to drive to the liquor store about five miles away. wow. atlanta police say that the passenger started arguing with the flight attendants as soon as they took off from ft. lauderdale. while police were trying to remove him, he started yelling as you heard, that there was a bomb on the plane. he was taken to the psychiatric
