good evening. julie haener is here now for what we are working on for 6:00 p.m. >> air force one lifted off before 5:00 p.m. tonight. president obama was only in town for 5 hours but he had a busy schedule. the president made three stops in san francisco. there were two private fundraisers. one at the san francisco jazz center. another at a home. but first the president gave a public speech at the betty ong recreation center. >> it was his only event opened to the public. talked about immigration reform. specifically a bill to increase boarder security and create a path to citizenship. towards the end of the speech, a man started to plead with him to make a order to halt deportations. ktvu's david stevenson was there and has more on the president's rocky reception in the bay area.

>> reporter: a warm reception for president obama in china town became a confrontation with a grad student angry about policies. >> the easy way out is to yell and pretend like i can do something by violating our laws. >> reporter: this came as president obama's approval ratings have dropped. on his last visit june 6, 62% approval rating. by friday the numbers flipped. 39% approvalling of his performance and 54 -- approvalling of his performance and 54 -- approving of his performance and 54% disapproving. hundreds opposed to the pipeline turned out to greet the president. >> we would have had a bigger crowd if we knew in advance.

access to gun. president obama issued few executive orders when you compare him to other presidents. also we posted a clip of the president dealing with the protesters on facebook. watch it and tell us what you think. a deadly traffic accident in san jose has a family planning a toddler's funeral and neighbors questions if changes are needed. the accident happened yesterday at oak and vine streets near interstate 280. ktvu's noelle walker is there and joins us to tell us how it happened. >> reporter: the driver was turning left here at the intersection, at the same time the three-year-old was over there in the middle of the crosswalk. there is no turn signal here that puts motorist and pedestrians on the move at the same time. witnesses say that is the

problem. >> reporter: every little boy wants to be a super hero. the three-year-old was no different. >> he loved bat man. spider man. all the super heroes. full of love and joy. >> now his mother is laying flowers. he was hit and killed at this intersection. he was in the crosswalk on his way to a playground. >> need to do something because that is -- that shouldn't have happened to my son at all. >> the driver was turning left when the accident happened. a neighbor snapped this picture showing a stroller behind the truck. >> i don't know what was going on with the driver. focus on what is going on around you. >> reporter: some neighbors say the lack of a signal puts motorists and pedestrians in the same space. >> what i -- when i turned she

started coming across and she had a little baby with her. but, i mean, nothing happened there except it scared me. >> reporter: she embraced one of the girls who accompanied her children and pushed one of them out of harm's way. a family thankful for one life saved while morning a life taken too soon. >> we will all miss him. >> reporter: this is the 37th deadly traffic accident in san jose this year. 22 of those have involved pedestrians. in san jose, noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. the president of san jose state university said the school failed to intervene in the torminute of -- torment of a black student by four white roommates. the black student union organized a march today in

support of the victim. that victim says for weeks he was tormented by his four white roommates. san jose state president promised the school will soon name a independent expert to look into the case. >> our decision making failed. as part of it i failed that student. and within that we failed all of our students. >> the roommates are facing hate crimes. their first court date is january 6. san francisco city attorney filed an injunction to keep city college of san francisco open. he filed the motion this morning that if granted will halt the accrediting commission from pulling accredititation of the school. -- accreditation of the school. supporters of the plan

suicide barrier on the golden gate bridge are looking for funding. the final design is expected to be completed next year. now officials are trying to find ways to pay for the project. the bridge district said toll money can't be used and it must be paid for with outside sources. a woman who went missing in yosemite national park this weekend was found alive today. rangers say she left her home on saturday morning to go hiking. searchers found her this morning. she suffered injuries and was airlifted to the hospital. officials say she didn't have a jacket, water or food. there is no word on her condition but rescuers say she was conscious when they found her. he put his body in harm's way to break the fall of a woman as she jumped from the

o.co coliseum. ktvu's eric rasmussen spoke to the man who explained how he trained for life and death situations. >> reporter: it was quite a conversation. he said it was his training as a marine that repaired him to react. this time the situation involved a fellow fan at the raiders game. >> i stook both arms bat. the procedure was -- at. the procedure was lock her in. >> reporter: he tried to catch the woman who jumped after yesterday's raiders game. he was bruised in the process but is okay. the woman is in critical condition but authorities say he saved her life. a marine, he said he didn't think twice about stepping in, even though he was putting himself in danger.

>> you train to make quick decisions. as she was descending i just reacted the way i did. my wife said you could have died. >> reporter: he showed us the game ball the raiders gave him. the only thing he lost in all of this was his jersey. this is a photo he took yesterday. in the race to make sure he was okay and render aid he said paramedics cut the jersey off of him. there have been news crews lining up here at his home all afternoon. while we were waiting to talk to him we bumped in to his granddaughters. one said he was always her hero. we are live in stockton, eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news.

>> a remarkable man. former resident was shot and killed in nevada and investigators say the suspect an 81-year-old man she was caring for. he appeared in court today on charges he killed his care giver. he claims the two were arguing and struggling over a shotgun when it accidentally went off thursday inside his home. his bail has been set at $1 million. the wife of a man detained in north korea went on tv to plead for her husband-release. they were interviewed today on cnn. the 85-year-old man went to north korea last month and as he prepared to fly home he was taken off a plane and detained by officials. he has been held for 30 days. they are holding out hope he will come home by thanksgiving. >> we ask respectfully for them to release him and let him come

new at 6:00 p.m. a soccer team was robbed during practice and several teens are

accused of the crime. the team was practicing saturday evening when the teens approached. one demanded the team's property. neighbors are shocked. >> why would you hold a gun to a kid that has no power or a way to respond to you other than here you go. >> police say they arrested two of the three teens. a 16-year-old and a 19-year- old. they say they recovered stolen cell phones, keys and gym bags and a shotgun. a 15-year-old boy is in a coma after suffering a head injury and police are trying to figure out how it happened. today investigators returned to montgomery high school looking for clues. the teen was found unconscious outside of the school's gym saturday and now in a medically induced coma. police say it is not clear if

he fell, attacked or doing pk. surveillance video does not include the area where the boy was found. it is not covered by the cameras. they are interviewing friends now. judge's order could decrial california's high-speed rail -- derail california's high-speed rail. ktvu's allie rasmus reports. >> reporter: california's high- speed rail is supposed to run where these tracks are but today the project suffered a set back. a judge denied the request to sell 8-$10 billions in bonds voters approved in 2008. the judge says the finance committee should act as the keeper of the check book and didn't provide enough evidence they needed to issue bonds. >> the committee did not show its works.

imagine it was high school home work and the teacher said you didn't show your work. i can't give you credit. >> reporter: he ordered them to redo their funding plan. that could take months or years to complete. >> they should have thought of that. >> reporter: she is pleased about the ruling. >> they can't issue bonds for construction. they can still spend on planning and land acquisition. >> reporter: the california's high-speed rail authority wouldn't talk about the rulings but representatives say it is still moving forward and they said like all projects we understand there will be many challenges that will be addressed as we go forward building the first high-speed rail system. he says it is likely the authority will appeal the
