from sunny vale the valley transportation authority says an individual was stabbed near the ream wood station on taszman driver this afternoon. that person was taken to the hospital for several stab wounds. and police say a suspect has been taken into custody. the vta tells us some southbound trains were delayed for some time. a 14-year-old girl is on life support after being hit while crossing the street right outside of her high school. it's part of an alarming trend in the south bay. patti lee is outside the girl's high school where counselors have been on hand for the past two days. patti. >> reporter: today teachers here at james lake high school have been told to keep an eye out for students who are acting strangely but have not asked for counseling. that's because there's a lot of miss information circling about this accident that took place here sunday night and it's causing some students to start mourning the death of bianca valdez while others are still

california report card on pedestrian safety that was updated last march shows a 3.9% increase in the number of pedestrian deaths. in 2010, 601 pedestrians were killed. in 2011, that number was up to 625. as for the numbers of seniors who were killed it was just about the same. 150 seniors killed in 2010. 151 died in 2011. a teen who was set on fire on an ac transit bus is going home tomorrow. and today his accused attacker made another appearance before a judge. john sasaki has how the victim and the suspect agree on how this case should proceed in court. >> reporter: his attorney filed this motion to have the case moved to juvenile court. richard thomas' family lets an

with his traumatic brain injuries. the dodgers are asking a judge to rule if the team is liable for his injuries before the court addresses the issue of damages. crews recover the body of a 29 29-year-old man from pittsburg out of the sacramento river. the accident happened as the victim was driving an excavator. the excavator was 16 feet under water and partially buried sways in silt. no word on why the excavator fell into the river but calosha is now investigating. seven people shot. investigators are looking into what motivated several men to open fire at a celebration. a street corner was sprayed with bullets and how an

innocent bystander was just taking out trash. ken pritchett. >> reporter: given that it happened in a dense neighborhood with children near by it is not unthinkable that more people could have been hurt. where these three little girls are playing today, two gunmen stood last night. at 96th and auburn evidence is everywhere. a bullet passed through this truck's windshield. another shattered a window on an suv. and a mini market with one, two, three bullet holes where slugs passed from the outside and ended up inside. seven people were shot here just after dark. most of them gathered together at a street bbq celebrating a birthday. >> we didn't know where it was coming from. we just knew it was close.

once everybody drops on the floor everybody gets down. >> reporter: most neighbors were too scared to talk on camera after what happened here last night. despite what we saw today, patrol cars. one of the victims a man named raul was simply taking the trash out when he was shot in the neck. one of the shooters had a handgun the other a rifle. >> reporter: the two gunmen were standing here on the corner of 96 and olive. they fired toward the group of men. you can see a bullet hole in that truck. then there was a fan of fire moveing to the right hitting the man taking out his garbage and ending up here. seven people shot at once unusual. but shootings in this part of east oakland are not. as of november 15, there were 171 shootings in east oakland up 6% over last year. it is not hard to imagine why neighbors are scared. >> i feel like it's not fair.

man about 7:00 this morning on cypress avenue. police say the man had suffered several stab wounds and that evidence at the scene suggests a struggle of some sort. they've been talking to a person of interest. they plan to serve several warrants in searchover that evidence -- in search of that evidence. the incident is also unleashing harsh public opinion. it may be generating a second look at a previous race study. >> reporter: that's right san jose state is still dealing with a hate crime situation. but many student leaders told us today that the incident and the trouble that it brings also exposed a bigger troubled picture of the way the university is run. >> much of the talk on the san

to turn in a gun they can do so anonymously. 44 people have been killed so far this year in san jose. president obama wrapped up a three day visit to the west coast today with an upbeat message for the entertainment industry. the president spoke before a crowd of 3,000 people at the dream works animation studio. chief executive is one of the president's biggest supporters. financial disclosure reports show that he gave $3 million to the political organization that supports president obama. but the president said he was there because of the studio's track record in creating jobs. >> i've come here today because this is one of the america's economic engines. not just dream works but this whole cluster of companies that generations have grown up knowing. disney and warner and universal and others. >> reporter: the president was in california to raise money for congressional candidates he

september. in all, price gains slowed in 19 of the 20 cities tracked. the index showed prices in san francisco were up 9%. las vegas saw the biggest increase at nearly 3%. on wall street the markets posted gains on positive news in the housing industry. the dow edged up a fraction. the nasdaq added 23 points and closed above the 14,000 mark. developing news now many americans are preparing to travel this week and there could be some rough weather ahead of them. a cold and wet early winter storm continues to move across the country. it's bringing cold arctic air and dropping snow and freezing rain in the midwest and parts of the northeast. for drivers it has been slow and in many areas dangerous. at least a dozen deaths are being blamed on winter related crashes. the weather is threatening to disrupt travel plans. right now there are no major

unsuspecting people targeted then knocked out cold with one big punch. that's part of a dangerous so called game that is now apparently making its way across country and is in california as well. >> it felt like a brick coming to the back of my head because he was like sprinting at me. he was really trying to hit me hard. >> reporter: this knock out game involves people randomly targeting unsuspecting strangers and knocking them out with a punch to the head. these attacks you're looking at here were captured on surveillance video on the east coast. incidents have been reported in at least six states including here in california and washington, d.c. at least four people have been killed. now 14-year-old shane gagan was attacked last week in modesto. he says it happened while he was walking home from a mixed martial arts class. instead of falling to the ground he used his skills that

he had learned on the mat. >> i just hit him back and that's all i was thinking about was just protecting myself more and don't get any more injuries. >> reporter: the attacker ended up running away. shane ended up with a concussion but says could have been a lot worse had it not been for his martial arts training. police say it's hard to find the attacker because the victims in general are knocked out and don't remember what happened. george zimmerman had five weapons in his possession when deputies arrested him. zimmerman had a 12 gauge, an ar15 and three handguns when he was arrested at his girlfriend's house. zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to charges included aggravated assault and is currently free on $9,000 bail. the 30-year-old zimmerman was acquitted of murder back in july for the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin in a community where zimmerman was a neighborhood watch volunteer. up next here, a big break

google made good on its promise to replace an imagine from google maps that contained the imagine of a teenager. the imagine has an x marking the spot where the teenager was seen. after our story air, google reachedded out to him promising to change that map. the u.s. supreme court has decided it will hear argumenting about a controversial part of the affordable care act that requires coverage of health care reform. one involves the oklahoma arts and crafts chain hobby lobby that is fighting an appeal by the obama administration. >> business owners should not have to violate their most deeply held convictions in order to own a business or

city of oakland to lead a multi million dollars project redeveloping the area around the coliseum b.a.r.t. station. eric rasmussen got a tip this summer and now 2 investigates the plans for the project and what could stand in the way of it ever getting started. >> reporter: walking distance from a coliseum. this b.a.r.t. station is also steps away from an east oakland neighborhood struggling to get back on its feet. >> it looks like a desert out here to begin with. >> reporter: they welcome affordable housing and a new shopping center. an official sounding name for what head describes as a nonprofit volunteer run group in charge of the transit village project. phase one building workhorse

housing is a $30 million job. >> this type of housing is critically needed. >> this summer city council members approved an exclusive negotiating agreement with oedc and a loan worth more than $500,000. the only problem the oakland economic development was no longer in business as far as the state of california was concerned. 2 investigates found its officers occupied by another group. the state attorney general which regulates charities listed oedc as delinquent. the group had not filed any returns since 2008. >> there's literally nothing there for anybody to evaluate. >> reporter: ken chou is the director which evaluating charities of all kind. the lack of information raises serious questions. >> there's simply no oversight and there's no information and no transparency into understanding what's happening with this organization. >> head says his organizization

started working with the city nearly 10 years ago but the housing market crash and the loss of redevelopment money put the project and the oakland economic development corporation on hold. >> the state assumed that because there was no activity that we were done. that we were finished. after 2 investigates started looking into the status of the company, the new office address is listed as head's home in oakland. >> why not allow developers to compete for this project? >> i can't answer that. >> reporter: it was b.a.r.t. that selected oedc in 2005. yet neighborhood investment manager gregory hunter was among staff that described the group as a nonprofit when they recommended the city approve an exclusive deal this summer. >> did you not know their status has lapsed. >> at that time we were not aware. we were under the impression that they maintained their

64 in napa today. 59 antioch. that was one of the cool spots. as we go outside tonight. as you know it's cloudy out there for the most part. beautiful night and there's a shot of the bay bridge. no wind, cloudy conditions and overnight lows tonight are going to get down there. they're going to get down to the low 40s. this is the latest computer model mostly cloudy for thanksgiving day. this green would represent rain but look where it is. it's well offshore. at one point the model had it pushed right up against us. it would have spun up moisture and we could have seen showers. right now it's offshore. it looks like it's wants to move into our area. keep tracking it. but right now it's becoming less and less of a likelihood we're going to see rain or snow. greens are 60s. like we saw today lots of mid- 60s. the cloud cover forecast for tomorrow you see all the clouds kind of moving in wednesday morning and then partly cloudy mostly cloudy then as you get into thursday. see what's happening you see

the low spinning out here. you see it coming close to us. that's the low. but it's moving into the area. forecast highs tomorrow. 63 in antioch. 64 in brentwood a lot like what we saw today. a lot of clouds. a lot of just kind of you know the conditions that are similar to what we've been seeing. above average temperatures and dry. you've had lots of low 60s. no fog to speak of. more clouds tomorrow. you knew that. more clouds on thursday. maybe a sprinkle in here but i took the verbiage out. then clearing on friday, saturday and sunday. that's when you will see more sunshine certainly. but compared to what they're seeing in the eastern seaboard. that storm is really going to whack that 24 hour travel. if you're traveling east washington or atlanta you're going to have some tough going tomorrow. >> the temperatures dipping down into the 30s at night. people have to worry about black ice at all? >> no. the cloud cover is keeping us warmer so we're really staying above freezing for the most

a warning about dangerous toys still in stores despite new safety laws. add a news conference in san francisco the california public interest group or calperc presented the trouble in toy land report. a spokesperson showed toys that contain toxic substances along with toys that are so loud they could damage a child's hearing. there was also a warning about small magnets that can easily be swallowed. >> when a child swallows two of these magnets they can actually cause internal damage by pinching internal or begans. >> reporter: calperc is also urging parents to test by using something everyone has at home. a common toilet paper roll to

money, for them it's a public service. >> i decided i wanted to focus on health care in general and really have the biggest impact on society that i could possibly have. and this is a great outlet for that. >> reporter: there are a couple of glitches being worked out. for example some zip codes don't return any information. unlike a lot of people the health surface gives a lot of credit to the federal website and the contractors who did all the leg work to gain provider data. and this year's model year escapes with a 1.5-liter engine. the heads could crack and that could lead to oil leaks that could lead to fires. the escape has been recalled seven times since the spring of 2012. highway patrol officers in the bay area will be trading their bmws for harleys in the next few weeks. the chp office in castro valley tweeted that the new bikes are
