officers say a young man and woman in their late teens or early 20s were hanging outside when they were shot by a young latino man in a car. the man was hit five times and the well was hit by shrapnel. their injuries are non-life-threatening and police have told us it appears to be random although it's unknown if it's gang related at all. police have limited information on the the suspects. >> the suspects fled prior to our arrival. one suspect fled on foot and another in a vehicle. >> reporter: a couple of hours before that crime occurred there was another shooting at 2 a.m. police say a group of people were hanging outside dover avenue. police say shots were fired and

a latino man in his mid 30s or early 40s was hit multiple times. a very busy morning for officers? san jose. we are told they were also investigating a stabbing that happened in the downtown area. we don't know his condition at this point. but in all of these crimes nobody has been arrested yet. reporting live from san jose, janine leila vega. >> . two people rushed to a hospital overnight after a high-speed chase in santa rosa ended with a crash. it happened on mar marleau road ride there. during the chase the driver lost control and crashed into a pole and a finance. >> the vehicle caught fire. officers were able to rescue the occupants of the vehicle and

both occupants of the vehicle were transported to the hospital with major injuries. >> police say no one else was hurt. they are investigating whether alcohol may have been a factor. a lot of chp officers are looking for drivers under the influence, speeders, distracted drivers and seatbelt violaters. it's a headache for oakland firefighters. cars parked on narrow roads in the oakland hills and they are blocking fire trucks and emergency vehicles. when fire trucks are are blocked by cars firemen often have to get up and run to the fire scene. homeowners in those areas have been asked to park elsewhere to keep those roads clear. a major lesson learned from the 1991 oakland hills fire disaster. if you are headed to the coast today keep an eye on the waves. the national weather service

says 10-foot waves are likely along the entire northern california coast today. meteorologists are warning people not to go out on the rocks. and it is not a -- the air quality district is asking people not to use their fireplaces today. wood smoke is the largest source of pollution in the bay area in the winter. time now 7:07. about an hour from now the hayward community comes together to honor the memory of 19-year-old karen gordon. every year the half-staff at the hayward plunge is set aside for the karen gordon scholarship. she was an intern at kdka and then a life guard at the hayward plunge. she was her way to work in 1991 when she was killed in a car crash. her father says they still feel

her loss every single day. >> those emotions are still there. the pain. the happiness in having had karen in our lives. the whole gamut of emotions tied to it every day. >> karen's father said she would have loved knowing she could give back even though she is gone. the fundraiser raises money to offer free swim lessons to low-income families. it also awards scholarships to two college students to help with career goals. the swimmers today will be asked to make a donation and scholarship recipients will be recognized this morning. hundreds of volunteers all over the bay area are already hard at work preparing meals for needy feel. live at memorial church in san francisco. they just started serving breakfast, katie? >> it is really festive here. they just turned on the gospel

last night workers at a chicago whole foods market protested outside their store. why? they are angry the store will be open today, thanksgiving. they say all workers should be able to spend time with family on thanksgiving. the crew says anyone who asked for the day off got it. the store's staff said they were willing to work for the holidays. they will be earning time and a half pay. a bay area non-profit organization scrambling. thieves stole everything that was supposed to go to families in need. one of the highlights of the year is a holiday party, but someone broke into the storage locker filled with this year's gifts, including arts and crafts materials, toys and mp3s. now there is almost nothing for the 40 kids who turn to that network for emotional support

situation in sankar lows. a gas line exploded killing eight people and injuring dozens of others. hundreds of people in willard, ohio may have to spend their thanksgiving in an emergency shelter because of a chemical spill. a concern is over about 26,000 gallons of a potentially flammable liquid that leaked from a derailed tanker train tuesday night. crews are working around the clock to clean up the mess but some people may not be able to go home until saturday. some of syria's deadly chemical weapons may be destroyed out the at sea. the obama administration has reportedly offered to take apart the weapons on a u.s. ship in the mediterranean. officials say that would avoid security problems caused by trying to get rid of it on land. the mv cape ray may be used for that operation. another delay for the healthcare.gov website. the obama administration will

postpone the launch of an online insurance marketplace just for small business owners until next year. that's so the focus can stay on fixing the healthcare.gov website. small business owners can still shop for healthcare insurance under the new law, but they will have to go through an agent, a broker or an insurance company at least for now. a federal judge threw out a lawsuit that claimed apple violated consumer privacy. the lawsuit games apple designed its operating system to easily transmit personal information to third parties without the knowledge or consent of the individual consumer. the judge says apple did not misrepresent its policy. there are 18 similar lawsuits still pending. 7:18. let's check traffic for you. sal is off this thanksgiving and traffic of light are than normal but there are still cars out on the road today. this is bay point highway 4. we are receiving word from the

a march organized by the harvey milk club. the focus the shortage of affordable housing in the city. an issue harvey milk cared deeply about. >> we have been battered from people coming in and stealing our homes and kicking us out. >> harvey milk was one of the country's first openly gay elected officials. in 1978 dan white assassinated milk and the mayor in city hall. a young woman who jumped from the deck of the oakland coliseum remains in critical condition. investigators have identified the person who jumped as a 20-year-old woman from san jose but they have not released her name and it's not clear why she jumped. she survived because a retired marine from stockton broke her 45-foot fall. that marine was injured, too.

7:32. new this morning the chp investigating a terrifying early morning crash. it happened in the hills over san mateo. a car plunged hundreds of feet off a cliff. this was near skyline boulevard. ktvu tara moriarty has been out there since 4:30 this morning. you have new information? but we spoke to the chp and they say that alcohol was not the a factor in this crash. they say the driver overcorrected and went over the cliff. you can see how steep it is. he went around that corner right there and that is where the accident happened. crews will retrieve that car in an hour. they are going to be running one-way traffic here on 35. the good news is that everyone out of the car and no life-threatening injuries. the dramatic helicopter rescue took about two hours. three people were trapped in the car and couldn't get out because they can broken feet and ankles. only one victim was able to walk up the cliff, so his or her injuries were not serious.

the chp says the black sedan veered off the edge of the road and ended up 600 feet down about 12:30 this morning. that's when it happened. because of the steep terrain and condition of the victims the firefighters called for the coast guard helicopter to aid in the rescue. they showed up at 2:30 this morning. we are along skyline boulevard, highway 35 was blocked off from old piniata road down to 92. that is the road that leads to half moon bay. again everything is open now. they are going to be running one way traffic soon. one victim is at san francisco general hospital. again, alcohol did not play a role in this crash. live from near san san te owe. police in oakland looking for a hit-and-run driver who ran down a bartending who was heading home from work. investigators hope surveillance video will lead to an arrest. the cameras are outside the shadow ultra lounge.

it capped occurred this crash early sunday morning right there. 32-year-old bryant mendoza just finished his bartending shift when this dark colored suv barreled down the street and slammed right into him. the driver appeared to stop for a second, then took off. >> i just remember him hitting me. then my back and my head hitting the windshield. i remember thinking freaking scum. you hit somebody, you stop to see if they are okay. >> mendoza was seriously hurt. doctors say he probably won't be able to walk for at least three months. now, this particular accident hits close to home for all of us here at channel 2. bryant mendoza is the brother of a ktvu photographer. police in san jose are searching for three suspects in a home invasion. it happened early yesterday morning in a home on angmont

court. they tied up several people in the home. the attack has them worried about his grandmother. >> i don't want to see this neighborhood turn into something it hasn't been for a long time. it's always been a safe place. i had so many thanksgivings and christmases here. i have never been this nervous about her. >> the victims were not seriously hurt. police say the victims may know their attackers and say that one of the suspects may have previously lived in that home. time now 7:36. a veteran san jose police officer now on administrative leave after being arrested on charges he was writing fake tickets to settle a vendetta. the d.a.'s office says 51-year-old george chavez used a police computer to issue a speeding violation to a man who sued chavez five years ago after a traffic accident. the case was settled out of court. prosecutors accuse chavez of writing two parking tickets to the attorney who represented the man who sued him. chavez is out of jail now on

$60,000 bond. a lieutenant has been filed by the family of twin boys run down by a 90-year-old driver in menlo park. the san jose "mercury news" reports a family suing the driver accused of jumping a curb on santa cruz avenue last month and pinning the 6-year-old boys against the wall of a walgreen's store. one of those boys was critically hurt and spent five weeks in the hospital. the lawsuit is seeking more than $50,000 in damage. and looking at this video you would be surprised no one was hurt. an amtrak train smashed into a car last night in oakland. investigators say the driver of the car tried to cross the track to 37th avenue and 9th street just as the crossing arms were coming down. the driver says his wife was telling him don't go, and he got confused. well, the amtrak sent the car about 20 feet off the tracks. luckily, no one in the car or on the train was hurt.

the teenager whose skirt was lit on fire aboard an ac transit bus is taking a big step today and returning to some normalcy. news cameras captured the family as they returned to their oakland home yesterday afternoon. the teen just wanted to go on inside. the family released the photo showing the bandages on both of sasha's legs. the i'm of the homecoming is just perfect for thanksgiving, says her mother. >> it's a wonderful treat. i have to start cooking again. >> reporter: sasha's father says the teen hopes to go back to school and see friends perhaps as soon as next week. they will have thanksgiving dinner today. california attorney general says there were 930 hate crimes reported in the state last year. that was a 13% drop from 2011 when there were 1,060 hate crimes. the justice department says one in every four hate crimes is based on sexual orientation.

new this morning the chp and san jose police are investigating a body and a freeway. a mantled them he had found a body on northbound 87. police say the person apeers to have been deceased for some time. 7:43 you. a storm on the east coast could make it hard for holiday travelers to get home for the thanksgiving holiday. while the storm wasn't as bad as a lot of people feared, the roads are slick. up to 9 inches of snow fell in upstate new york. they had snow as far south as atlanta, georgia. the storm even spawned an ef-2 tornado in atlantic beach, north carolina. two people were hurt. also, a condo complex was damaged. the airlines are getting back on schedule after a lot of delays because of the storm. almost 475 flights were

canceled yesterday. mostly in new york, new jersey, and philadelphia. officials at sfo say flights were mostly on time, although some of the passengers in new york did see delays. >> i figured it would be really crazy. but it wasn't. it was nice. >> more than a million people are expected to pass through sfo this week. no major delays are being reported this morning. well, in less tan a week a second person has been arrested the at sfo on suspicion of trying to represented a car using a fake id and stolen credit cards. 31-year-old james gracie was arrested monday. he is also wanted in connection with previous burglaries and identity thefts. investigators do not believe this is connected to the arrest of 29-year-old denise rohrback. deputies also confiscated altered personal checks and credit cards not in her name.

the earth's magnetic field has shifted and that is forcing officials at the oakland airport to change the runway numbers. according to the oakland tribune it's the first time runway numbers have changed in 86 years. officials say the magnetic field has been moving a tenth of a degree every year and the faa advises airports to change their runway markings when magnetic fields shift more than 5 degrees from existing runway markings. 7:46. on this thanksgiving day the family of a east boy who was badly hurt in the boston marathon bombing survived. he is back to his regular life now, recovering from his injuries. he was at the end of the race last april waiting for his mom to finish the marathon when one of the bombs exploded. he says he'll never forget that moment. >> all of a sudden i blacked out and everybody was screaming and everything.

it was way different. i knew what was happening. >> reporter: he severed very bad leg injuries. his family is amazed by how well he has recovered and aaron is happy he can play sports again. now, on another note aaron's mom katherine was pregnant when she ran that marathon. young caroline there is the newest member of their family. well, no criminal charges will be filed against a target shooter blamed for last summer's fire on the back side of mount diablo. the fire started september 8th. it took five days to contain it. the flames burned 3100 acres of mount diablo's eastern flank. the district attorney says there is no evidence that the use of a rifle or ammunition violated any state laws. a public awareness campaign to stay alert during the shopping season. it comes as robberies and thefts involving smartphones and tablets are out there.

you have new details? >> reporter: yes, we are here at the scene of the latest shooting. obviously, police have cleared here. this is on state street just outside of downtown. in the last 30 minutes family members of the young woman who was injured came here and left. they didn't want to comment. we were told by one of the residents that two of the victims did not live here. they were visiting. at 4 a.m. neighbors heard gunshots. a young man and woman in their late teens were hanging out on the porch of that home when they were shot by a young latino man in a car. there was also a suspect on foot. police say the man was hit five times by bullets and the woman was hit by shrapnel in the foot. their injuries are non-life-threatening. at this point it's unknown if this is gang related, but a lieutenant says it appears it may be random. >> it's very early in the morning. it's 4:00. these individuals obviously are celebrating thanksgiving a

little early. they are out on their porch. based on the information that i have, it doesn't appear that the victims and the suspects knew each other. >> reporter: a couple of hours before that crime occurred there was another shooting at around 2 a.m. police say a group of people were hanging outside in the neighborhood on the east side. a latino man in his mid 30s or early 40s was hit multiple times. he was taken to the hospital. investigators do not have anyone in custody for that crime. so a very busy morning for officers throughout san jose. we know that they were also investigating a stabbing that occurred in downtown san jose. no arrests in that case either. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega. sometime 8:04. new this morning words that san jose police arrested a suspect in a deadly shouldn'ting over the weekend. on saturday police responded to 911 calls after someone was shot -- about someone being

shot at capitol park. when police got there they found a young man later identified as peter cortez. he was dead from a gunshot wound. so far police haven't told us the name of the suspect. homicide detectives are still trying to figure out a motive. two people rushed to the hospital after a high-speed chase in santa rosa ends with a crash. that police pursuit with speeds topping 100 miles per hour started last night around 10:30 with an attempt to pull over a driver who ran several red lights. during the chase the driver lost control and crashed on marleau road into a pole and a fence. >> the vehicle caught fire. officers were able to rescue the occupants of the vehicle and both occupants of the vehicle were transported toment hospital with major injuries. >> no one else was hurt. police are still investigating weather alcohol was a factor. expect to see lots of chp officers on the roads this

evening. they are looking for drivers under the influence, speeders, distracted drivers, and seatbelt violate ertz. the maximum enforcement effort continues to un. it's a real headache for oakland firefighters. those cars parked on narrow roads up in the oakland hills blocking fire trucks and emergency vehicles. now, according to a new city audit when the fire trucks are blocked by a car the firemen often have to get out and run to a fire scene. homeowners in those areas have been asked to park elsewhere to keep the roads leash. a major lesson learned after the 1991 oakland hills fire disaster. that's where 25 people died. the debate continues over how to make the drivers comply to keep those roads open. if you will be heading to the coast today, watch out for those sneaker waves. the national weather service warns strong rip currents and 10-foot waves are likely all along the northern california coast today. they are warning people don't go

out there on those rocks or stand close to where the waves are breaking on shore. the tides are expected to decrease by tonight. also, this is not a spare the air day, but the experts are saying please don't use your fireplace today. wood smoke is the biggest source of air pollution in the bay area during the winter. the cold temperatures and the low winds today would not allow any -- the wood smoke would be very unhealthy here in the bay area. and happeninged today right now the hayward community is coming together to honor the memory of 19-year-old karen gordon. every year the staff at the hayward plunge raises money for the karen gordon scholarship. gordon was an intern at ktvu and a lifeguard at a hayward plunge. she was on her way to work at the plunge in 2001 on her 19th birthday when she was killed in car crash. her father says they still feel her loss every single day.

fed here today. i will give you a tour of the kitchen. we are putting whipped cream on the pumpkin pies this morning. those i can tell you it smells awesome here. it's making me so hungry. and we have vats of potatos. some 200 volunteers will be cooking here today and serving up meals to some 4,000 or so people who will come into st. anthony's to get that hot, tasty meal on thanksgiving. tell me, what kind of undertaking is to cook all of these potatos? >> you have to get started early enough and trust yourself. you have to kind of learn to overcompensate a little bit. sometimes you have to add more water and more salt. >> reporter: is it quite a work out to mash that many spuds? >> it is. i don't have to go to the gym anymore. because i work at st. anthony's. i get my workout doing this. i probably rowed all the way to oakland doing this. >> reporter: what time did you show up? >> i got here about 5:15 this

tara moriarty joins us live with new information from the chp. >> reporter: the chp just spoke to to us and they said that initially they thought that these injuries were much worse than they are. miraculously, all four people walked away from the scene of the car crash with cuts and bruises. they initially thought they had broken some bones, but that is not the case. so that's good news. in about ten minutes a tow truck, which you can spot in the distance around the bend, that is going to be retrieving the car. they are going to need a 600-foot long cable because look at the drop. that is where the car went over the edge. you can see a lot of heavy brush. authorities believe that that actually helped cushion the fall and quite possibly saved those people's lives. the dramatic helicopter rescue took about two hours. three people were trapped in a car. only one victim was able to walk up the cliff. the chp says that the driver of the black sedan started to drift off the road, overcorrected, drifted in the other lane, overcorrected again and then veered off the cliff.

speed and alcohol were not factors in this crash. this happened at 12:30 this morning. and because of the steep terrain firefighters called for the coast guard helicopter to aid in the rescue. that showed up at 2:30. we are along skyline boulevard or highway 35, which for four hours was blocked off from old kanata road down to highway 92, the road that leads to half moon bay. the tow truck is going to be retrieving that car so the chp is running one way traffic along this stretch. the chp says it is now interviewing the victims to figure out why the three people in the car needed to be rescued and didn't walk up the hill like the other person did. live near san mateo. also new this morning the chp and san jose police are investigating the discovery of a body on the freeway. officers say a homeless man went to a san jose fire station before 1:00 this morning and told them he found a bodin the overpass on northbound 87.

the overpass is near a homeless encampment and they are trying to figure out if the person who died lived there. developing news in pinole. technical problems delayed the start of thanksgiving day shopping at kmart. now, the store was due to open at 6 a.m., but shoppers were left out in the cold while the employees tried to fix that problem. >> they provided coffee to us from starbucks to try to accommodate us. the management, mr. romero, he was very, very helpful and considerate of it and very apologetic. >> we will tell you that kmart store has since opened. now, the kmart in concord opened as scheduled to shoppers. they were eager to get in and take advantage of those doorbuster deals. kmart and other stores are offering discounts to make up for a shorter than expected holiday season. >> i had plans later. but i can get out early today. so i am glad about that. >> this is going to be the

shortest holiday shopping season since 2002. only 26 days compared to 32 last year. here's a look at when some other stores plan to open. kmart will stay open for 41 hours straight. old navy opens at 9 a.m. toys 'r us will open at 5 p.m., three hours earlier than last year. shoppers that camped outside the best buy store in pleasant hill hoping to get some really great black thursday deals. now, the store doesn't open until 6 p.m. but shoppers say they don't mind waiting for these great doorbuster deals. well, google shopping express is adding extra workers today. the same-day delivery service says it has 80 more workers and trucks today than on a normal day. the company is prepared for a lot of last-minute requests today and on christmas. google express is hoping that it will introduce its service to new people. so today first-time customers are going to get a $10 discount. now, we could know by

the pipeline will be back online monday morning, but it will be at minimal pressure. now, they took it out of service in october because of safety concerns. an internal pg&e email warned there could be another san bruno-type situation. back in 2010 a gas pipeline exploded in a san bruno neighborhood. eight people were killed. dozens more were hurt. several homes were destroyed. in willard, ohio here hundreds of people may have to spend thanksgiving in an emergency shelter because of a chemical spill. 26,000 gallons of a possibly flammable liquid leaked on tuesday night from a derailed tanker train. 400 homes have been evacuated. the crews are working around the clock to clean it up, but they say some people, they may be displaced until saturday. another delay with the healthcare.gov website. the obama administration has decided to postpone the launch of an online insurance marketplace for small business owners until next year. that's so the focus can stay on

fixing the healthcare.gov website. small business owners can still shop for health insurance under the new law but they will have to go through an agent, broker are insurance company for now. the young woman who jumped from the third deck of the oakland coliseum is in critical condition this morning. it happened after the raiders game late sunday afternoon. investigators say the person who jumped is a 20-year-old woman from san jose, but they're still not releasing her name and it's still unclear why she jumped. she did survive, though, and that's because a retired marine from stockton broke her 45-foot fall. look at his injuries there. that marine, donny and a half dad, was injured while saving that woman. oakland radar fans are ready for turkey and football today after losing last sunday to tennessee. today's thanksgiving game against the cowboys is almost a must-win for the raiders if they want to keep in the playoffs and dream about it. they will play the 6-5 cowboys in texas, and the raiders will get back darren mcfadden.
