some stores stayed open over night. i will tell you how that is impacting safety concerns and what sfpd has seen so far. plus black friday violence at a big department store. how this ugly incident is disturbing an ugly trend. unfort fatly we are beginning this hour with a fatal accident. you are looking at 80. this is just off the bay bridge in san francisco. but we understand 101 is shut down. you are looking at live pictures from chopper 2. as sal mentioned it looks like a fatal crash. we will go to sal to get more information on that. it is friday november 29th thank you for joining us i'm pam cook. >> and good morning i'm dave clark. we will be checking traffic. let's go to steve paulson first

and check your forecast. >> thank you pam and dave. spare the air. very hazy sky. tvs starting off cold for some. 30s and 40s. san francisco at 51 degrees. concord sitting at 43 degrees. temperature there is some areas in the 30s. lots in the santa cruz mountains under clear skies. rain in southern california but mainly hugging the coast. inland its not all that bad. we will have clear skies here. a little cold in the morning. little be nice to mild in the afternoon. temperatures 68 at san jose. higher clouds what few we have had gone south. we have lots of sunshine. sunny and nice today. chilly or cold morning. quiet pattern though. and the weekend looks even warmer but there are significant changes for next week. highs today a loft 60s. here is sal. steve, we have a very serious crash in san francisco that has shut down 101

northbound. you can see that is northbound 101 and everyone is forced to get off the freeway at vermont street. that is because just down the road there is a fatal crash involving a pedestrian. so the traffic is getting off the freeway here on 101 at vermont. its not making it through to the lower deck of the bay bridge and now there is some kind of a big traffic jam in san francisco where there normally would not be a traffic jam. the person that was hit by the truck has been pronounced dead. now they are waiting for the san francisco medical examiner to arrive on the scene. and this is not going to be open for quite some time. its just too dangerous to have the traffic zooming on down to the emergency workers where they are on 80. so the alternate route is 280 downtown. just take 280 all the way downtown. news chopper 2 will show us the scene here. you can see the chp is there. the emergency vehicles have

left. the paramedics left now they are waiting for the medical examiner to arrive. west 80 is not effected by this. but it may be slowing as people take a look. and they are doing an investigation right now. this is right near the san francisco hall of justice. let's move along to the bay bridge toll plaza. that is backed up for a very small delay if any at all. its not your typical morning commute for a friday. its black friday and there is more shopping at the malls. speaking of the malls we've been looking at malls. every traffic report. looking at the shopping center. and the traffic here on 101 looks pretty good. the mall is getting a work out but the freeway is is just fine. 6:04 let's go back to the desk. well, the mall definitely the big story this morning. happening now 500-dollar giant screen tv. laptops for less than $200. holiday shoppers taking advantage of door buster deals. many retailers decide to get a head start. they opened last night on thanksgiving. the holiday shopping season in

full swing. i think a lot of people are shopping for themselves with those deals. >> yes. that could be. i want to show you what the parking lot looks like here. when we got here around 4:00 a.m. it was full like this. and i just peeked inside the mall and it was not packed but it was buzzing with activity. a manager tells me when the great mall opened at 8:00 last night there were 1500 people lined up at each of the entrances waiting to get in. now there are lots of sales happening here. so people of course want to take advantage of that. but economists are predicting bay area merchants will do much better this year compared to the rest of the country. the reason the robust local economy. outside the bay area analysts say consumer may be looking for more practical items to buy. but there is a growing number of wealthy consumers in the bay

area thanks to an improving housing market. the unemployment rate here is much lower than the national average. so let's find out what people plan on spending. i stopped a couple of ladies who were shopping and are just going back home. tell me did you guys get great deals in there. was it worth it? >> yeah we did. >> yeah its the perfect time of the year to shop. and obviously this happens once in a year. and we go to shop all night which is unusual. and we got a lot of deals. all of the stores were busy and there were too many lines but then we were able to get through most of them by standing for 30 minutes. >> and not to mention the parking lot was so full. we had to find an empty lot and try our luck. >> reporter: and one last question did you spend more than you did last year? do you feel it was better?

>> around this time, yes, of course we did. i think because of the deals it was more tempting and attractive to walk into each of the stores and check out what they have for this year. i think we backed quite a few deals. >> it was fun shopping for eight hours now. [ laughter ] >> reporter: thank you so much, ladies. and the great mall here again is in full swing. the shopping here on black friday. its open until 10:00 p.m. tonight. reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. time 6:07. violence comes in the heat of the shopping frenzy. there was gunfire last night near chicago at a kohls department store. police chased two men suspected of stealing clothing. as one officer struggled with the suspect, his arm become tangled in the car.

he was dragged by the car briefly before other officers fired shots into that car. >> we were telling him to stop the car because he was dragging the cop around. he didn't stop. the cop shot about four or five times. >> you saw that car it had several bullet holes and a shattered window. the police officer and driver were treated for nonlife threatening injuries. the investigation continues. with retail stores staying open all night for black friday sales, san francisco police are warning you be extra vigilant. katie utehs is live in union square right now. the shoppers will converge out there. or are they doing it now? >> reporter: dave, we haven't seen the density of shoppers we normally would. that is because many of the stores were open overnight. i did talk to a couple officers that works union square patrol and they tell me they saw about double the amount of people over night. because of the stores opening so much earlier on thanksgiving. but the good news is that they

have not had any reports of thefts or robberies. the concern is holiday shoppers will be targeted. >> i think it was just to control the crowd rather than keep people safe. >> the people that shopped overnight mostly drove into the city. thousands will take bart this morning. starting at 6:00 bart personnel will be on hand at the walnut creek, and dublin station to greet riders and share safety

tips. and get them there safely. now the officers i spoke with say they hope tonight's tree lighting ceremony in union square you are looking at the tree. it is still dark but it is up and has all the ornaments on it. the tree lighting ceremony is at 6:00 tonight. the officers were hopeful that because shoppers started so early this morning and shopped over night that maybe there will be less people out and about throughout the day and into the evening and perhaps that will keep things nice and quiet for them. police officer and security guards will be out -- they will try to protect shoppers from what they call the dark side of black friday. there has been a growing number

of incidents. >> i believe things get a little safer. because of things that happened in the previous year or years. hundreds of walmart workers will protest today in san leandro. they are demanding higher pay. some are nation-wide. many walmart employees have to depend on public assistance because their pay is too low. they want walmart to offer full- time hours and a minimum salary of $25,000 a year. new this morning the chp now investigating a deadly crash on an east bay freeway. it happened around 12:30 this morning on interstate 80 in richmond. investigators say a driver got out of his car after crash into

the center divide. then another car hit and killed him when he left the crash scene and walked across the freeway. chp says the driver that hit him immediately stopped and now cooperating with investigators. alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this tragic crash. also new this morning firefighters have put out a fire at a party supply store in san jose. now they gained control of that fire been within the last hour or so. it started at 4:15 this morning. no one was hurt. the store was not open at the time when the fire started. it started in an electrical panel in the attic. time 6:12. bringing more holiday donors. the government's health care website is under the weather and the latest prescription comes from silicon valley.

time now 6:15. emergency screws in central missouri still monitoring last nights huge gas pipeline explosion. look at that. sent flames shooting into the air. you can see it for miles. but no injuries have been reported. however, several homes were evacuated near the plant. its about 75 miles east of kansas city. still no word on what caused this explosion. tornado victims in the midwest are thankful for what they have left. storm victims in coke coke moe, indiana. >> surveillance video shows what happened when a tornado blew through a middle school.

your time is 6:16. happening today san francisco's glide memorial church all host a day after thanksgiving breakfast. meals will be served to the needy this morning at 7:00. 500 volunteers prepared and served 5,000 thanksgiving meals yesterday. >> i've been waiting for this moment all year. every year i come to glide. its a tradition for me. i'm from san francisco and my family is gone now. so this is family. >> >> and this years actors and actresses they used their day off to volunteer at glide. the glide president told ktvu news despite cut back at food stamps she believes the demand for food continues to rise. helping the homeless learn computer skills. the chronicle reports that

tenderloin technology lab teaches classes on how to use a computer, use the internet, and apply for jobs online. the social network yammer donated dozens of computer monitors to the lab. zendex and twitter sent their volunteers over to help out with the classes. 6:17 is the time. sal is following this major at least a major injury accident in san francisco. still shutting down 101, sal? >> yeah people are being forced to get off the freeway pam and dave. east 80th at seventh. i suppose we have better news. because the first chp said it was a fatal crash and then they -- the fire department arrived and said the person was indeed still surviving barely. but they took that person to san francisco general. so that is better news. but that person is in extremely critical condition that has been taken away from the freeway. let's go right to news chopper

2. the freeway traffic is being taken off. east 80th at seventh. and they are still doing an investigation. it started with a garbage truck that hit a pedestrian on east 80th. even though chp listed it as a fatal crash, they have changed the listing and canceled the medical examiner. and i suppose that is better news. northbound 101 is backed up from 280. but its still a tragic crash where someone was hit by a garbage truck on the freeway. never like to see that. i do want to mention southbound 101 is not effected if you are driving out of the city. if you are driving on the central freeway, you will not be able to get on to '80. let's move along and take a look at the commute here. that traffic looks pretty good. if you are drying in oakland this morning 80 and 580 is looking pretty good. traffic around the shopping areas even though it is

relatively crowded we have not seen a lot of crowding on the freeways. 6:19 let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. good morning, everybody. 30s for some. walnut creek is in there. livermore says so are we. i know palo alto i saw two in palo alto. san francisco is the warmest at 50 degrees. lots of sunshine today. higher clouds have moved to southern california where there is some light rain santa barbara and santa maria. mainly just skirting the coast. that was the low we talked about the last couple of days. could spin a few clouds toward monterey county but that would be it. we have san francisco. far cry for inland temps which are in the 30s. we will start you off at 50 and end up with 65. 34 ukiah and 38 eureka. 46 down in monterey. we do have occasionally a

help the typhoon victims in the philippines. they wanted $348 million for immediate help. now they are putting together a 12-month relief plan. they say more than 5.5 million filipino workers lost their livelihoods in that typhoon. very serious accusations in brazil after a deadly accident at a world cup soccer stadium. a giant crane collapsed killing two workers. now allay boar union leader says they warned their supervisor about possible problems and claims officialed worried more about speeding up construction instead of safety. officials in brazil say they are confident they will still be ready for the start of the world cup next june. the nba has fined east bay basketball legend jason kidd for spur sports -- for poor sportsmanship. replay showed it appeared to tell one of his players just

cold morning. its a quiet pattern into the weekend. there are significant changes next week. 60s today for highs. here is sal. steve, good morning. we have a very serious crash in san francisco. northbound 101 on to eastbound 80. the crash happened on east 80 at sent. a garbage truck hit a pedestrian there. the freeway is being taken off at seventh. for awhile it was held up at vermont street and they are still doing an investigation here east 80 at seventh. it does look like they have made progress. we may see them open the freeway at some point but they haven't said when they will do that. the alternate route is 280 as you head down downtown. use 280 down to sixth street. it looks like they might be opening the road any time soon here. let's move along and take a look at the commute here from another angle. you can see east 80 in san francisco it is still shut down. as we tilt up 101 traffic is not all that bad coming up

through. its a little slow at seventh and very light volumes today. let's move along to the oakland freeway system. the traffic here looks okay as you drive through. also been looking at the mall. mall traffic if you are driving down to komo or daily city to do shopping so far so good. a little slow down on 380. and in emeryville we have a look at 580. its already getting a little bit slow. now let's go back to the desk. >> sal, we will continue to keep an eye on the mall traffic. our breaking news in traffic this morning. the crash he mentioned just moments ago. first mentioned about an hour ago involving a garbage truck hit a pedestrian. we want to check in with ktvu tara moriarty who is near the scene. it shut down the freeway. big deal. >> reporter: yeah, it did. luckily the freeway is back open now. you can see this is some of the

traffic here that is being rerouted from 80 on to seventh street. we are right near the hall of justice. if we take a look over in this direction, you can see that is where the accident happened. right before that sort of billboard there. you can see traffic is slow going but it is moving. we want to mention the chp first reported this as a possible fatal. when they got on the scene, we were told paramedics did find signs of life. her heart was still beating. we understand that the woman was on the freeway when she was struck by a garbage truck. the accident happened on eastbound 80. officers again just opened up the roadway. traffic was forced to get off at vermont street. but we will advice is take 280 into san francisco and work your way to the bay bridge if you need to. again it should be completely clear soon. westbound 80 traffic not

effected. we will keep you posted on the victim's condition. we understand she is at san francisco general hospital. live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. right now 6:34. happening now the holiday shopping season is off and running. >> welcome to sears. >> just like stores around the country retailers at the sun valley mall in concord they opened thanksgiving night and got a jump on this big time of the year for the retailers. while some stayed open all night, others just opened up. now pam, small businesses too. >> yeah small businesses in oakland are offering shoppers a chance to spend their money with them. keep the money here in the community. its all part of plaid friday. more than 45 businesses will take part in the event. the city will also offer free parking and meters and in seven city owned lots today and on saturdays all the way through the end of the year. its all part of an effort to

get more people to shop local. business owners in san rafael say the growing homeless population there is chasing shoppers away. homeless people from haul over the west coast are attracted to downtown san rafael by services including a soup kitchen and a free clinic. however business owners say the downtown area is too small to handle the growing homeless population and they have suffered thousands of dollars in lost business. city of san rafael says steps have been taken to deal with the problem. they are hiring the homeless to clean the streets and putting more police officers downtown. shoppers are up and they are out in the south bay this morning. ktvu janine de la vega is live to tell us what it is like at the great mall in milpitas. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. yes. when this great mall opened up at 8:00 p.m., there were thousands of people waiting to get in. right now it looks like a little bit of a lull but it is still buzzing with activity.

spending on themselves and there is plenty of time to do that here at the great mall. it is open until 10:00 p.m. tonight. reporting live from milpitas janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. time 6:37. a 12- year veteran is on paid leave after a deadly police shooting thanksgiving day. it happened when the suspect stabbed two men and a woman in east san jose and carjacked a mini van across the street. the suspect led police on a short chase. it included going the wrong way on interstate 680. that chase ended in a dangerous incident and also a deadly confrontation. >> the suspect rammed officer vehicle at which time the officer feared for his life and fired his duty weapon at the suspect. >> now police have not told us the name of the man who was killed. all three of the stabbing victims are expected to

survive. the teenage victim of an apparent hate crime is describing that horrified attack on board an ac transit bus. 18-year-old sasha fleischman returned home from the hospital on tuesday and now spending this holiday season with family in oakland. earlier this month sasha was on an ac transit bus heading home from school when someone set fire top sasha's skirt. sasha tried to put out the flames by waving the skirt. which made it worse. >> my second reaction which saved my life is i went back to my kindergarten class and stop, drop, and roll. i just drop on the floor and start rolling around. and other passengers started stomping onth flames. >> a 16-year-old boy who has admitted to setting sasha on fire remains in jail awaiting his next court date.

sasha is not ready to forgive him. at least not yet. time 6:39. a reckless driver and deadly crash closed down the highway. what happened to that driver and how fast was he going at the time. right now we still have a closure on eastbound 80 at seventh. it looks like they just are reopening the freeway and traffic is recovering here in san francisco. clear skies, cold for some. not too bad for others. it will be sunny today. what about the weekend? and temperatures warming up a little bit. but big changes for next week.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. thefts and robberies have now climbed to a five-year high in san francisco. police say this disturbing rise in crime is due mostly to the recent jump in cell phone thefts which are ease city targets for thieves. those riding bart and muni buses should be especially careful. san francisco police are warning people to be extra vigilant. ktvu katie utehs is joining us from union square. its very busy out there already. >> reporter: it has been busy this morning. we moved down to market west field shopping center here was set to open at 7:00 but many

stores are already open and the doors as you can see people coming and going which is good. because it is kind of kept a steady flee of traffic. we haven't seen the long lines and the chaos and crowds. we spoke with a group of sisters that come in from millbrae every year to shop in downtown san francisco. they say the ride in on bart felt safe this morning. >> we always make sure that we have everything secured. our bags are zipped. but we never had an incident. but we make sure we all stick together. that is the important part too. especially when the doors open to nordstrom everyone wants to fly in. we make sure we hold hands and we kind of like a barricade. >> reporter: we have seen a lot of officers out and about here on market. they told me its been really quiet and have had no reports of thefts or robberies. but there has been a recent

uptake of cell phone thefts in the city so they want people to remain vigilant. not be on your cell phone. make sure you secure your bags. all of those common sense tips. they are passing out these little pamphlets. and to keep people from walking across the street on their cell phones. they do not want people to be hit jaywalking or crossing the sidewalk. again those safety tips make sure you keep your bags with you and stay off the cell phone. katie utehs. cab drivers are also being warned about a coordinated crime that has led to one attack in the east bay. that happened early yesterday morning in san leandro. a cab driver picked up a passenger and drove him to marina boulevard. as the passenger got out, a masked man punched and robbed the cab driver. police believe the passenger

and masked man were working together. tragedy last night during the busy thanksgiving travel day. a car was going 150 miles an hour on the ohio turnpike when it slammed into a van killing two people in that van. take a look at the wreckage there. that car burst into flames after running into the van. the highway patrol says the cars were chasing this car. it hit ateleioses three cars over 17 miles. the man that was allegedly driving suffered only minor injuries. bay area police departments will be out in full force this holiday weekend. they will be looking for drivers under the influence. in santa rosa police want to know if alcohol was involved in wednesday nights crash that followed a chase. the driver in that crash hit a pole and a fence before the car burst into flames. two men in the car they were treated for injuries. police say they hope to prevent similar crashes by first spotting the drivers who are speeding or running red lights.

time 6:47. sal come on back. you are still watching highway 101. >> yeah we had problems. the only good thing i can say since traffic is light the problem has cleared up quickly. i want to show you northbound 101 in san francisco. it is absolutely light. remember we had the freeway closed for an injury accident. once they cleared the crash and they opened up the lanes, traffic completely recovered. which is nice. if you are taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, westbound traffic is light coming into san francisco. i think most of the activity today will be around the shopping malls. if you are driving this morning around the bay area the traffic is going to be okay. we've been looking at 580 near the emeryville area and the traffic there will be a little slow on 580. nothing major in some of those lanes. let's move along now and take a look at news chopper 2. we have

its a miracle those men survived without any broken bone. >> i'm not a medical professional. they looked like they had went for a ride. that is for sure. and definitely looked relieved to be in the aircraft. >> it appears the driver of the car over corrected on a really tight turn. speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash. all four men were wearing seat belts. california's bullet train project may be in big trouble. this week a judge blocked the states access to billions of dollars in bonds needed to build the trains. they cited funding concerns. that ruling also jeopardizes millions of dollars of federal funds. the critics call the project a train to nowhere since it only has enough money to build 120 miles of track from fresno to the outskirts of bakersfield. if you ever wanted to make something a law, this could be your chance. state senator jerry hill is accepting ideas for his annual it ought to be a law contest. the contest is open to all of
