the bay area are responding to crime at the mall. mornings on 2 starts now. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. good morning. we're giving you a live look at highway 101 in san francisco this morning. there were some big problems out there this morning when a garbage truck hit a pedestrian. it did shut down traffic for a while. as that investigation got underway, we're going to have a live report on just exactly what happened coming up in just a upl of minutes. -- a couple of minutes. good morning, i'm claudine wong. >> and good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. things are about to change aren't they. >> yes, sir. we'll get to that in a second. 30s, 40s. mid-30s for some. right at 50 in san francisco. other areas are really cold

with the 30s. it will be clear, nice. higher clouds and mid level clouds in central california not us. most of the cloud cover will stay south of monterey and salina. starting you off at 42. sunny side up today, steer clear. temperatures again, a little bit of a northeast breeze it looks like is trying to develop. a little hint of one in san francisco. not very strong and the direction is offshore, that's a sign of things to come over the weekend. not too bad out in the burbs. a quiet pattern. 60s. we are looking at a commute that looks good. i didn't realize that some people do have to go to work. but enough people have the day off to make it nice and light. if you have to go to work, no major problems, by the way, if you are driving in to san francisco. northbound 101, approaching the 80 split, that traffic is moving along nicely until you get to the lower deck of the bay bridge. i want to mention that the traffic around the shopping

mall isn't all that bad. as we look at the malls, we have been looking at walnut creek for example, it's not exactly a mall. it's a shopping area and some of the streets are getting crowded. no major problems on the freeway nearby. sun valley mall, the same thing goes, a little bit of crowding at the mall itself, but 680 looks good nearby. let's go to tara moriarty who is near the scene of a collision in san francisco that happened early this morning. what's going on in the area now. >> reporter: well, you know, investigators are trying to figure out why this woman was on the freeway walking around to begin with. she is now at san francisco general hospital fighting for her life. the scene is clear but we'll show you where it happened, behind me here on eastbound 80. shopper 2 flew over the scene shortly after 5:30 when the 911 call in. the chp called this a possible fatal but crews got on scene

and found signs of life. the woman's heart was beating. crews transported her to the hospital. after the accident, chp shut down 101 northbound and made drivers get off at vermont strategy. exactly a half hour ago, officers opened -- street. exactly a half hour, officers opened the street back up. live from san francisco, i'm tara moriarty. ktvu channel 2 news. and new this morning, the chp is investigating a deadly crash on an east bay freeway. that happened around 12:30 this morning on the interstate 80 in richmond. investigators say a driver crashed into the center divide and got out of his car. he then tried to leave that crash scene by walking across the freeway and that's when another car hit and killed him. the chp says the driver stopped immediately and is cooperating with investigators. they do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. happening now at the port of oakland, picket lines are up. these are live pictures.

news chopper 2 flying over. the truck drivers are demanding financial relief from environmental regulations that they say forces them to upgrade their trucks. on wednesday at the port of oakland, a police officer was hurt right there during a similar demonstration. a car accidentally ran over his foot. you saw him limping there. the injury was not believed to be serious. now, the truck drivers say if they don't get more compensation, a lot of them are going to be forced out of business because they can't afford the extra cost. but supporters of laws say these drivers were given plenty of advanced warning. meantime, black friday shoppers, already up, they're out there shopping for those big door buster deals. the giant screen tvs, things like that, a lot of stores and retailers opened last night on thanksgiving. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live at the great mall in milpitas, somehow it going out there. >> reporter: it's going good.

you're going to see a lot of signs like this, additional 50% off. lots of signs like that in the store windows, now right now there's a little bit of a lull right now. it's not as crazy as it was when the doors opened at 8 last night. we are told there's about 1500 people waiting in line at each of the entrances to get in. now it's died down. it may be a good time if you're thinking about coming and you're sort of on the fence about coming here. there's a lot of sales happening here. people of course want to take advantage of that. economists are predicting merchants are going to do much better this year compared to the rest of the country. the reason, the robust local economy. outside the area, analysts say consumers may be looking for essentially, practice call -- practical items for the holidays. the unemployment rate is lower than the national average, and shoppers say they are going to

be spending more than last year. the mall spokeswoman said they will be watching the sales trend. >> here in the south basic we've got a big tech boom happening again. people have money to spend. they want the great value that great mall has to offer, so we're seeing people shopping, and the cash registers are ring. >> reporter: and some of these shoppers say because they're finding great deals, they're spending on themselves. there's plenty of time to do more. again, as i mentioned, not quite as a busy as it was here last night. so maybe a good time to come, the great mall is open until 10:00 p.m. something i want to mention that i have also seen besides you know, people doing their shopping is a lot of people, you know, with their heads down sitting at tables,ing like they're tired, some people have been shopping for 8 hours. kind of crazy. i see a lot of sleepy and we'rey faces. reporting -- weary faces, reporting live, janine de la

vega, catch ktvu. early this morning, people lined up at this home depot getting deals on things like appliances and holiday decorations. the doors opened at 7:00 a.m. the shoppers tell us they didn't want to miss out on their turkey dinners with the family, so they waited until this morning to hit those stores. i wouldn't have shopped on thanksgiving anyway. >> last year was crazy. you have to wait in line for up to two or three hours, even in the later hours when it was past like 1:00, the line was still long. >> one shopper told us that a lot of good deals were already offered online tuesday and wednesday, and people took advantage of that. there was gunfire near chicago at a kohl's department. police chased two men to a parking lot. one officer struggled with a suspect, his arm got tangled and he was dragged by the car briefly before other officers fired shots into the car.

>> got over there, attempted to slam the door, the cops arm got stuck and the driver attempted to take off. the second cop was telling him to stop the car. >> the car did have several bullet holes and a shattered window. the police officer and the driver were treated for nonlife threatening injuries and the investigation is continuing. things got out of control at a store in west palm beach florida. shoppers yelled. you can see they were shoving each other as they tried to push their way to the front of the line. it happened at the retail chain, brand smart usa which operates in georgia and in florida. time is now 7:09. hundreds of wal-mart workers plan to protester in san leandro today, demanding higher pay. similar demonstrations are planned nationwide. protesters say wal-mart workers have to depend on public distance because they're salaries are too low. they want full-time hours and a

minimum salary of $25,000 a year. the protest is due to begin at 3:00 p.m. at the wal-mart on hisparion boulevard. occupy protesters will rally today. they're going to pass out fliers asking people not to shop at stores accused of using sweat shops to make clothing. they want a buy nothing day to counter act black friday. that union square rally starts at 1:00 p.m. getting that popular toy for you child may be harder to come by. according to a new study, the u.s. could be in for a possible toy shortage. many retailers say the xbox 1 place station 4, disney dock mcstuffins get better check up center and the big hugs elmo could be extremely hard to find. and that's because many stores have ordered about 2% fewer toys when compared to last year. retailers are also reporting that they are sold out of certain toys. experts say it could be because people are shopping later and

were no injuries, but the explosion forced the evacuation of several homes nearby. this was 75 miles east of kansas city. still no word on what caused the explosion. meantime, tornado victims in the midwest are getting special thanksgiving help. storm victims in kokomo, indiana, gave their thanks in shelters with their family members and friends. more than 50 kokomo families lost their homes when deadly tornadoes on november 17th hit at least 7 midwest states. >> it's more about just coming together in conversation and fellowship than it is just a meal. >> newly released surveillance video, this is inside a middle school in lafayette indiana, you can see parts of the building being thrown around. the walls blowing out during one tornado. there were more than 73 tornadoes killing 6 people and destroys thousands of homes. supporters of immigration reform are now focusing their

attention on next year. hope is diminishing that congress is going to pass a new immigration bill by the end of this year. advocates with focused on 2014. that could also be tough because it is an election year. president obama says he's willing to work with house republicans to pass a series of piecemeal immigration bills rather than one comprehensive bill. democrats are demanding that any legislation include a pathway to citizenship for the most of the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants. a new national poll indicates that for the first time there may be an early front runner in the race for the 2016 presidential nomination. the poll shows 24% of republicans say they would support new jersey governor chris christie. that's up 7 percentage points in september. the poll shows if hillary clinton does not run, vice president joe biden would be the favorite to capture the democratic nomination. the department of health and human services is switching

the data center for healthcare.gov to palo pal low toe base -- palo alto based hewlett-packard. google and oracle employees were recruited to help. tomorrow is the obama administration's deadline to get healthcare.gov working. they said it will be working smoothly for the vast majority of workers by november 30th. they have experienced several technical problems. small businesses won't be able to use that site for another year. time now 7:17. the technology lab in san francisco's tender loin neighborhood is helping the homeless learn computer skills. the san francisco chronicle reports the tenderloin technology lap teaches classes on how to use a computer, check e-mailers and hunt jobs online. the social net work yammer has donated dozens of monitor, and twitter has sent volunteers to

help with the classes. thanksgiving continues today at san francisco's glide memorial church. post thanksgiving breakfast is being served to those less fortunate right now. 500 volunteers and prepared and served 5000 thanksgiving meals at the church yesterday. many volunteers said they had personal reasons to be there. >> i have a lot of friends and family who maybe aren't in as good a position as i am. so i want to give back a little bit. >> volunteers also prepared 1500 dinners to go. they are looking ahead. food items dropped off on thanksgiving at san francisco st. anthony's dining hall are being saved so they can be served at a later date. >> good stuff. time 7:18. let's check in with sal. so far you're getting a holiday from heavy traffic. >> a little bit. what's happening is people are out shopping but not really crowding the roads in case you're trying to get into san francisco. and i realize you may have to

go to work today, one of the good things about that is you won't have to worry about having a lot of slow traffic on the roads. as a matter of fact, traffic continues to move along pretty well. this is a look at interstate 80, and the traffic here is moving along very nicely are no major problems. i've been looking at the malls, and not all of them, but most of them, and we have been looking at all of them, i won't show them to you in this report. not a lot of traffic on the roads in emeryville area. there's a little bit of traffic on 580 o as you come up on the mcarthur maze in the usual spot there. the walnut creek area, and 680 looks pretty good near downtown walnut creek, a lot of people shopping and the sun valley mall, traffic not affecting the freeway. a little bit of slowing on 685 appearing at some of the sun valley exits. the hill top mall, no traffic problems on interstate 80 approaching hill stop mall.

act -- agencies working with the united nations will ask for more money to help typhoon victims in the philippines. they are putting together a 12 month relief plan: the international labor association says more than 5 1/2 million filipino workers lost their livelihood. and serious accusations in bra sill after a deadly accident in a world cup organization. a giant crane collapsed killing two workers and labor union leaders warned about potential problems claiming officials were more worried about speeding up construction than safety. officials in brazil are confident they will be ready

today, at the very least, you have the consolation prize of not having to be in heavy traffic. if you're going shopping today, which is what a lot of people are doing, news chopper 2 is at the out let at livermore. you can see the parking lot has new room. it's one of the big popular shopping areas and there are a lot of people. i wouldn't be scared off by 580 or the parking lot. they have a lot of parking here. i want to mention some earlier problems we have on 101. a garbage truck did hit a pedestrian eastbound 80 at 7th 7th in san francisco, and there was a major injury accident. this garbage truck slammed into the passenger just after 5:30 near 7th street. the woman was taken to san francisco general hospital where she reported suffering very serious injuries. highway 101 in the area was shut down for about an hour. it has reopened. 7:32. let's go back to the desk. >> thanks sal. also new this morning,

firefighters are knocked down a fire at a party supply store in san jose. it started at 4:15. you can see the smoke coming out. no one was hurt. the store wasn't open when the fire started. firefighters say the fire started in an electrical panel in the attic. 7:32. the malls are getting more and more crowded every minute on this black friday after what many people call gray thursday. >> thank you for shopping. everybody come on in. here they come. in shopping mall in concord was among the may around the country that opened last night. getting a jump on black friday door busters. while many of the extreme bargain hunters, they're home. others are starting their holiday shopping in san francisco's square. katie utehs is live in the city to tell us why police are also saying you should be very careful. >> reporter: well, dave, police have seen a recent up tick in

cell phone robberies. they are passing out fliers. this warning of muggings, stay vigilant, put your cell phone away, and the other side is you don't walk across the street while on your cell phone. don't be distracted while walking across the street. let me show you some video from the morning. there are a lot of officers on the streets, just patrolling union square and market street to make sure that shoppers stay safe. now, they tell me things have been pretty quiet. no reports of thefts of robbery during this black friday. that is so far. union square becomes a hub for holiday shopping and many people are also taking b.a.r.t. into the city, and we have spoken with a few of those folks who say their trip on b.a.r.t. went smoothly but they're still taking extra safety precautions. >> we came with each other. we didn't come alone, essentially. and it wasn't that bad. i was scared at first, but it's not that bad. >> we make sure we all stick together. that's an important part, too, especially when the doors open

to like nordstrom, everyone wants to fly in. >> reporter: there is some speculation by officers we have spoken with. they think that because retailers like macy's and old navy are opening on thanksgiving, there seems to be less chaos because you have people shopping thursday night and into friday morning, it seems to have spread out the crowd. back out here live, you can see, again, that police presence. they're kind of over by the escalators up from the b.a.r.t. stop here on market. now if you're taking b.a.r.t. back to the east bay, leaving the city after your holiday shopping, some of the b.a.r.t. stations will be providing safety escorts, so you can make sure that your holiday bags make it safely in your car, and then home with you. live in san francisco, katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. good advice. police officers and security officers are out in force at bay area shopping malls this morning because violent incidents are up among shoppers determined to get those door buster deals.

the black friday shoppers also face a threat from bold thieves. we talked to one mall shopper in san leandro who had a close call last year with some suspicious men on black friday. >> they looked like they were not shopping. >> like they were trying to rob somebody. >> they wanted a tv, and like harassed us for it, but the police was right there, so they stopped it. >> that woman was at the same san leandro shopping mall where there was a black friday shooting two years ago. a young man was wounded after someone tried to steal his christmas gifts. small businesses in oakland are offering shoppers a chance to spend their money with them, and keep their money here in the community. it is all a part of black friday. and more than 45 businesses are going to take part in the event. the city of oakland is also going to offer free parking at meters and in 7 city owned lots today and then on the saturday until the end of the year. it is part of o an effort to pump more money into the oakland economy. after plaid friday and black friday comes a weekend full of holiday shopping

followed by cyber monday. coming up at 7:45, what's different about the pinnacle of online shopping this year. time now 7:36. business owners in san rafael say the growing homeless population is chasing away customers. the san francisco chronicle reports homeless people from all over the west coast are attracted to downtown san rafael because of services, including a soup kitchen and a free clinic and business owners say the downtown area is too small to handle the growing homeless population and they have suffered and lost thousands of dollars in business. the city of san francisco says steps are being taken to deal with the problem. they're even hiring the homeless to clean the streets and they're also deploying more police downtown. a 12 year veteran of the san jose police department is on paid leave this morning after a deadly police shooting on thanksgiving day. investigators it started when the suspect stabbed two men and a woman in east san jose, then carjacked a minivan across the

street. police say the suspect then led police on a short chase. it included going the wrong way on interstate 680. well, the chase ended with a dangerous incident and a deadly confrontation. the suspect rammed the officer vehicle at which time the officer feared for his life and fired his duty weapon at the suspect. >> now, at this point, police haven't told us the name of the man who was killed. all three of the stabbing victims, they are expected to survive. the teenage victim of an apartheid crime is now describing that horrifying attack on macy's transit bus. sasha fleischman returned home from the hospital on tuesday and is now spending the holiday season with family in oakland. earlier this month, sasha was an on ac transit bus headed home from school, when someone set her skirt on fire. she attempted to put out the flames by waving the skirt. but that just made things worse. >> my second reaction which is probably what saved my life is

i went back to my, you know, kindergarten class and stopped drop and roll, and i just drop on the floor and just start rolling around and some other passengers started stomping on the flames. >> a 16-year-old boy who has admitted to setting sasha on fire remains in jail awaiting his next court date. sasha says he is not ready to forgive him, at least not yet. if you have ever thought you wanted to make something a law, this could be your chance. state senator jerry hill of san mateo is is accepting ideas for his annual it ought to be a law contest. contest is open to all of his constituents in the 13th 13th senate district. applicants are asked to submit an idea for improving the quality of life in san mateo county, santa clara county or the entire state. the sonoma county animal shelter offering a special deal

welcome back. time 7:43. four men have a lot to be thankful for. they survived a crash with their car plunged down a steep embankment near half-moon bay. now the pilots involved in rescues them, they're talking about it. the coast guard helicopter pulled the four men to safety there after their car careened several hundred feet down an embankment on highway 92 yesterday morning. one of the pilots involved says it's a miracle they survived without any broken bones. >> i'm not a medical professional, but they looked like they had went for a ride, that's for sure, and definitely looked relieved to be in the aircraft. >> the chp says it appears the driver of the car over corrected on a really tight turn. speed and alcohol were not factors. all four men in the car were wearing seat belts. cab drivers are being around about a coordinated crime. this has led to at least one attack in the east bay. it happened early yesterday morning in san leandro.

police say a cab driver picked up a passenger at the san leandro b.a.r.t. station and drove him to the 600 block of marina boulevard. as a passenger got out, a masked man punched and robbed the cab driver. police think the passenger and the masked man and they were working together. it is going to be a short day on wall street. the markets close at 10:00 this morning our time. want to give you a look at the numbers right now. the dow is up 64 points. we are of course keeping an eye on retailers this morning, and they do appear to be the big gainers on this black friday, jcpenney, ebay, amazon all up. shopping numbers considered a key read on the economy. and bay area merchants will do better this shopping season, better than the rest of the country and that's because of the robust local economy. a santa clara economist tells the mercury news, consumers are looking for essentially or

catching drivers who are speeding or running red lights. >> minor traffic infractions, that's how we find the majority of impaired drivers. it could be weaving, following too close. speeds, stop signs, red lights, the idea is we catch them before they hurt or kill somebody. >> the chp says officers typically make as many dui arrests during the thanksgiving holiday as they do on new year's eve. if you are planning to head to the outlets in livermore this weekend, be prepared for a lot of traffic. the livermore police department says it is expecting thousands of shoppers to pass through the shopping center all the way up until christmas. police are warning shoppers, be ready for back ups on interstate 580 and on jack london boulevard. check out that line. the police department will have additional officers on hand this weekend to help direct traffic in the area, and i know when we were out there, and that outlet mall first opened, the lines were unbelievable.

7:53. a former marine accused of killing homeless people has died behind bars. 25-year-old catampo is accused of killing 6 people, including 4 homeless man. he was taken to a medical facility in santa anna, died the next afternoon a. cause of death has not been announced. a new report shows more inmates are attacking other inmates inside county jails. ever since california's realignment law took effect. the associated press found that inmate assaults were up 32% in the 10 counties they studied

since the law took effect in october 2011. the population of the jails went up 14%. the re alignment law moved lower level offenders to county jails instead of state prisons as a way to reduce overcrowding. san jose's christmas in the park celebration gets under way tonight. it's expected to attract a half million people to downtown san jose over the holidays. there will be extra police patrols this year. last year, a 14-year-old boy was stabbed in a suspected gang related attack. it was the first serious crime ever reported during san jose's big holiday celebration. san francisco's union square is going to sparkle with thousands of holiday lights tonight. it is the 24th annual macy's lighting that will take place at 6:00. it will feature more than 33,000led lights and 1100 ornaments. judith hill from the voice will since at the event.

temperatures warming up slowly. we will have a lot of upper 60s today. here's sal. >> and we have been looking at the malls, we have been looking at the roads and one of the things that we know is that traffic is lighter than usual, if you are driving in most areas, as a matter of fact it has been a very nice drive across the bay bridge in the morning and no major problems. the morning commute looks okay in san francisco. we had an earlier crash on northbound 101 at the 80 split. that's gone. i want to show you the mall here or i want to show you the malls in a moment. one of the things i want to mention, chp is investigating a fatal crash on east bay freeway that happened around 12:30 this morning on interstate 80 in richmond. a driver crashed into the center divide, then got out of his car, he tried to leave the crash and walk across the freeway and that's when another car a hit and killed him. the chp says that driver stopped immediately and is cooperating with investigators. they do not believe alcohol is

a factor in the crash, and one of the things i want to mention is the malls, this mall here in the emeryville area, we're seeing traffic that's a little bit slow here on 580, but it's not actually as much as we thought it would be. i want to show you, just one more thing. in the walnut creek area, downtown walnut creek not really a mall but a shopping area, but you can see that southbound 680 is actually doing pretty well and so is northbound 680. driving to the shop areas is not so much as problem, but when you get there, thereto a lot of -- there are a lot of people shopping. police are on the scene of a demonstration at the port of oakland. you are taking a look at video we shot about an hour ago when news chopper 2 was overhead. a group of independent truck drivers on the picket line demanding financial relief from new environmental regulations. those go into effect the first of the year and will force them to upgrade older trucks. a police officer was injured in

a similar demonstration when a car accidentally ran over his foot. you can see there as had you ever -- as he limped away. hundreds of them say will be forced out of business because they can't afford the additional cost. supporters of the new rule say the drivers were given plenty of advanced warning. your time is 8:02. the holiday shopping for black friday started early this morning to get good deals and we have live team coverage of what it was like out there. ktvu's tara moriarty, you're looking at the crowds in emeryville, but first let's go to janine de la vega at the great mall in melodias. what's it like out there. >> reporter: there's no too much foot traffic. it was probably crowded earlier. it comes in ebbs and throws, not wall to -- flows. not wall to wall people here at all. when the doors opened at 8, we

are told there were thousands of people here and they were packed. it's predicted that shoppers will spend more. there are a lot of sales happening here, offering 50, 60 and 70% off of items. people want to take advantage of that. economists are predicting bay area merchants will do much better, the reason, the robust local economy. outside the bay area, analysts say consumers may be looking for essential items to buy for the holidays. there's a growing number of wealthy consumers in the bay area thanks to an improving housing market. the unemployment rate is lower than the national average. we asked shoppers this morning if they'll be spending more or less this holiday season. >> it was actually less. i have all the deals. they're doing like 60% off everything. i have only spent like maybe 50. >> what we spent last year, we typically end up spending, you

know, roughly around a thousand per person. >> mall management says shoppers who have more of a disposable income still want value and are looking for deals. they're going to be studying the sales trends. they're predicting a good season. now, there is plenty of time to do more shopping here at the great mall, and it might be a good time to come right now, back out here to a live picture. again, it looks kind of empty, at least where we're standing. as i mentioned, they come and go. if you're sort of hanging on the fence, do i want to come out, it's actually probably best to come now rather than later, you know, when the crowds might pick up in the afternoon. reporting live, from milpitas, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. black friday is the busiest shopping day of the year, but there may be less of a frenzy today as we heard just mentioned. we want to check with tara moriarty live in emeryville, and you're seeing a little bit of a lull there as well.

>> yeah, a little anticlimactic here. we're not seeing crowds folks saw last year. we're at the target, and apparently last night they were swamped from about 8:00 until 1:30 in the morning. they do expect things to pick up again at 11, but many of the door buster deals were offered last night at stores. at 5 this morning, the doors to home depot opened. that was one of the few stores that didn't open yesterday on thanksgiving. customers told us they were anxious to snatch up holiday wreaths and appliances where were the big ticket items. toys "r" us was open until 5 last night. shoppers told us the door buster deals were gone. they could find the regular sale items. one man loaded his fan as a rule of toys. he has shopping this year has been easier compared to last year. >> last year it was crazy. you have to wait in line two to three hours, in the later hours o when it was past like 1:00, the lines were still long. >> and people were cranky.

times. >> there were other skirmishes in new jersey, texas and a wal- mart. an officer a was injured breaking up a fight. a female wal-mart employee was also trampled by shoppers. and that is not a friendly crowd. things got a bit out of control at this store in west palm beach florida. as you can see, those shoppers were yelling at each other, shoving. there's the front of the line, and they're all trying to get there, all the way up to the front. this is at a retail chain called brands smart usa operating in georgia and florida. time now is 8:08 o. hundreds of wal-mart washingers say they will protest today -- workers say they will protest today. many wal-mart employees have to depend on public assistance because the salaries are too low. they want wal-mart to offer full-time hours and a minimum salary of $25,000 a year.

the protest in san leandro is due to start at 3:00 p.m. occupy protesters will rally in san francisco's union square. they're going to pass out fliers asking people not to shop at stores accused of using sweat shops to make clothing. they also want a buy nothing day to counter act black friday. the union square rally starts at 1:00 p.m. if you're looking for that toy for your child this year, it may be harder to come by depending on what you're looking for. the u.s. could be in for a possible toy shortage. many retailers say the xbox 1, play station 4, the dock mcstuffins, better check up center from disney, and big hugs elmo could be hard to find this year, and that's because stores have ordered less about 2% fewer toys compared to last year. many retailers are reporting that they are sold out of certain toys. that makes people crazy. experts say it could be because people are shopping later and the toys are in higher demand.

transit into the city, the police say pay attention, we'll tell you what that reason is, coming up in a live report. friday, november 29th. i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic now. steve, o not too bad weather here. >> we have a little bit of patchy fog off the point rays area. spare the air day goes through friday night. temperatures 40s. starting off with 30s. a couple leftover. even a few 50s. some locations on the mild side. a little bit of fog right there. and a little bit off the san mateo coast as well. the system that's producing rain in southern california, pretty good rain in santa barbara. some clouds move up in the central valley, but that's probably the northern extent of those, san francisco looking for a mild low to start off, near 50 degrees. we'll go for a high of 65 degrees. it will be sunny side up. we have severe clear air except for the patchy fog. cloud cover offshore, that's a sign of the direction we're going to see over o the weekend as well, which will give us warmer weather.

sunny and nice today, cold inlandnd for some. -- inlan in-- inland for some. mild and warm, 60s. >> steve, good morning. right now, traffic is actually doing pretty well around the freeways. we do have slow traffic developing in the parking lots of the mall. if you're trying to get to san francisco, you won't have problems getting across the bay bridge or going across the bay. we have been looking at the sun valley mall and it's actually doing well on 680. here's the mall area here, and the traffic on the roads is not bad at all. in fact, it looks good on 680 north and south, trying to get there. i also want to mention traffic is back to normal on eastbound interstate 80 in san francisco. following a major injury accident. a garbage truck slammed into a pedestrian at 80. a woman was taken to san francisco general hospital where she reportedly suffered very serious injuries. highway 101 in the area was

shut down for an hour. new this morning, san jose firefighters fought an early morning fire. it happened at a party supply store. it started about 4:15 this morning, right there. alternate the party time store on san carlos street. no one was hurt. the store was not open when the fire started. they believe it started in an electrical panel in the attic. in the meantime, the malls are getting crowded, more and more for this black friday, after what many people called gray thursday. >> thank you for shopping everybody. come on in. >> they were ready. this shopping mall in concord, among the many around the country, it opened last night, thanksgiving night, to get a jump on black friday door busters. now, while many of the extreme bargain hunters are already home, others are starting their holiday shopping in san francisco's union square. and that's where katie utehs

has been all morning. you're also telling people while you're shopping, keep your eyes open for things, too. >> absolutely. there is a lot of police presence out here along market and union square. also if you follow me, where you see the mobile command unit, some of the smaller stores like oakley, and the sunglasses boutique there. they have private security as well. things have been quiet, really, considering, and police seem to be o benefiting from stores opening on thanksgiving. because we haven't seen the mad black friday dash. >> if you wait until all the stores open at one time at 5 in the morning, then you gate mass rush of people, letting people trickle through the stores a little bit over a couple hours or a few hours, maybe helps keep from that mad rush for people to try to get in and get items all at the same time. >> reporter: san francisco police are warning shoppers that there has been a recent up tick in cell phone thefts. they won't be able to be aware

of that. they're handing out pamphlets letting them know to stay off their cell phones. keep it in your pocket. keep it secure in your purse and also don't walk across the street on your cell phone because they don't want anyone getting hit on busy market street. as well, b.a.r.t. has extra security for shoppers who will be headed back to the east bay. some of those stations in the east bay will have security guards that can walk shoppers from their car or from b.a.r.t., rather to their car with the shopping bags and the good news to report here this morning sfpd tells me that so far there have been no incidents of theft or attempted robberies. the police presence as well as the extended shopping hours here. katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. police officers and security guards are out in force at bay area shopping malls this morning. and they are trying to protect shoppers from what they call a dark side of black friday. now, there have been a growing number of violent incidents

among shoppers determined to get the door buster deals. police say they are more prepared than ever this year. >> they are learning from their mistakes. every year things get i believe things get a little bit safer because of things that happen in the previous year or years. >> now, we spoke to police and choppers at the san leandro shopping mall where there was a black friday shooting two years ago. a young man was wounded after someone tried to steal his christmas gifts. small businesses in oakland are offering shoppers a chance to spend money with them and keep the money here in the community. it's a part of plaid friday. more than 45 businesses will take part. the city will offer free parking at meters and also in 7 city owned lots today and on saturdays through the end of the year. it's part of an effort to pump more money into the oakland economy. and why go out and shop when you can go it from home, from your cell phone or even from work. that's a no no, right. one of the biggest online shopping days of the year is coming and coming up in 10

minutes, how many people plan to shop on the job come monday. 8:36. business owners say san rafael's growing homeless population is chasing away shoppers. the fran chronicle reports homeless people are attracted to downtown san rafael by a soup kitchen and a free clinic. business owners say the downtown areas is too small to handle the growing population and that they have suffered thousands of dallas in lost business. the city of san rafael says they're taking action by hiring the homeless to clean up the streets and also they're adding more police downtown. a 12 year veteran of the san jose police department is on paid leave this morning after a deadly police shooting thanksgiving day. investigators say the violence started when the suspect stabbed two men and a woman in east san jose, then carjacked a minivan. police say the suspect then led officers on a short chase, including going the wrong way on interstate 680.

the chase ended with a dangerous incident and a deadly confrontation. the suspect rammed the officer vehicle at which time the officer feared for his life. and fired his duty weapon at the suspect. >> at this point, police haven't toll us the name of the man who was killed. all three of the stabbing victims are expected to survive. well, a teenage victim of an apparent hate crime is describing the attack on board an ac transit bus one month ago. sasha fleischman returned home from the hospital on tuesday and is spending the holiday season with his family in oakland. sasha was an on ac transit bus headed home from school when someone set sasha's skirt on fire. sasha attempted to put out the flames by waving the skirt but it made things worse. >> my second reaction which was probably what saverred my life is i went back to my, you know, kindergarten class and stop drop and roll. and soy just drop on the floor,

and just start rolling around and some other passengers started stomping on the flames. >> a 16-year-old boy who has admitted to setting sasha on fire, remains in jail awaiting his next court date. sasha is not ready to forgive him, at least not yet. if you want to make something a law, now could be your chance. state senator jerry hill is accepting ideas for his annual it ought to be a law contest. it's open to all of his constituents in the 13th 13th senate district. applicants are asked to submit ideas for improving the quality of life in san mateo o county, santa clara or the entire state. the sonoma county animal shelter offering a special deal this holiday season to give pets a loving home. throughout the month of december, they're offering adoptions of o all an -- of all animals, breeds and sides for only $10. adoption fees usually range

pour men have a lot to be thankful for this holiday weekend after they survived a terrifying plunge, in a steep embankment near half-moon bay. the pilots involved in rescues them are speaking out. a coast guard helicopter pulled the men to safety after their car careened down an embankment on thanksgiving morning. one of the pilots involved said it's a miracle can the four men survived without any broken bones. >> i'm not a medical professional but they looked like they had went for a ride for sure, and looked relieved to be in the aircraft. >> the chp says it appears the driver over corrected on a hair

pin turn and speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash. all four men in the car were wearing their seat belts. bay area police departments will be in full force looking for drivers under the influence. police want to know if alcohol played a role in a car that involved a chase. the car burst into flames. two men in the car were taken to the hospital. police hope to prevent similar crashes by looking for drivers speeding or running red lights. >> minor traffic infractions, that's how we find the majority of impaired drivers, it could be weaves, following too close. speed, stop signs red lights, the idea is we catch them before they hurt or kill somebody. >> the chp says officers typically make as many dui arrests during the thanksgiving holiday as they do on new year's eve. claudine, san jose's christmas in the park celebration starts tonight. the tree lighting ceremony this evening kicks off the free event. they're expecting to attract a half million people to downtown san jose over the holidays.
