north bay. here is a live picture of protesters marching through the streets of santa rosa. they are upset over the shooting of 13-year-old andy lopez by a sheriff deputy who today went back to work. and in the past hour we've seen them walk through the streets and have several stand offs with law enforment officers. christien kafton is walking and talking with these demonstrators tonight. and we will go live to him coming up in less than 10 minutes. good evening i'm ken pritchett. >> and i'm julie haener. frank somerville is off tonight. more questions being raised tonight on what killed kim spalding. she disappeared from her hospital bed and it was 12 days before she was found. >>2 investigates delays into the investigation since her body was found at san francisco general hospital. >> david stevenson is looking to why the medical examiner is

moving too slow on the case. >> reporter: the supervisor called for a hearing into the backlog at the medical examiner's office. this after the spalding family says they're tired of waiting for answers. investigators and her family are still awaiting the cause and date of her death. >> she was dressed in street clothes with extensive boots on with her purse laying by her side >> reporter: critics say the department is severely understaffed and backlogged. the national association of medical examiner's this year downgraded the offices accreditation from full to provisional siting a below average turn around time for office reports. a spokesman for the mes office told ktvu the office of the

a well respected golf coach andrew michael nesbet molested them. he was supposed to be honored this weekend for his work with children. but now he's under arrest facing dozens of sex abuse charges. allie rasmus is now at the golf course where nesbet coached. >> reporter: he is accused of sexually abusing some of the students he coached here. at the las casitas golf course there were still pictures of nesbit and his students until late this afternoon when a manager removed them. the students range in age from 12 to 17. police say the investigation into nesbit began two weeks ago when one of those students came

forward. livermore police believe nesbit has other victims which they don't know about yet. >> we have a suspicion, whether they want to come forward and cooperate with us we hope they do. it's not easy for a male to admit. a male coach sexually assaulted them. but you know hopefully they know they're not alone. >> reporter: nesbit was scheduled to get an award from the northern california pga for creating the grip academy. representatives from las casitas golf course said they have no comment but that he was terminated from his job immediately after he was arrested. they want parents who's children participated to sit down and have a conversation with them. live in livermore, allie rasmus. two deputies were injured in a confrontation that led to

the shooting. the sheriff's department responded to a call about a possible suicidal man just after 12:00 p.m. authorities say there was an altercation and deputies shot the man. that man is now hospitalized in critical condition. the sheriff's department isn't saying exactly how the deputies were hurt but we're told their injuries are not life threatening. natural gas leaks have caused problems in several bay area cities today. in brentwood a construction crew digging near the lone tree shopping plaza accidentally ruptured a gas line around noon. people near by were told to stay indoors until the line was capped. another gas leak shut down the west grand avenue approach to the bay bridge in oakland this afternoon. this was also caused by a construction crew. knew perhaps one of the more concerning gas leaks was in oakland where a distribution line burst underneath an interception. tom vacar is live there. tom-- >> reporter: this had the potential to be a very

significant event. but since the pipe was much smaller nowhere near san bruno. at 8:30 this morning the intersection of golf links road and fontain road became a pool of fire. a pool that burned for four hours until pg & e capped off a pipeline that ruptured 6 feet underground. that was no surprise to former neighborhood resident sharra cuvari who's father still lives in the neighborhood. >> i know where the fire was i would smell gas there for a long time. i smelled natural gas. the scent that they add to natural gas when i went for walks and sometimes i could see it coming up off the street. you could see the gas and you could smell it. >> reporter: what did pg & e tell you. >> they said okay, thank you. we'll send someone out to check it out. >> reporter: now pg & e will have to do much more than just check it out.

>> it's too early to speculate on what exactly caused this incident here in oakland. but over all pg & e has taken a closer look at pipelines throughout our service area. whether it be pipeline that is operate at a higher pressure or lower pressure like they do here. >> reporter: but that does little for gooey who's backyard was burned by the fire. >> they say anything they want to say. >> they wait until there's a problem before they go and fix something and i think they need to be proactive about these pipelines because we don't need another neighborhood blowing up. >> reporter: we've just learned that of the 19 homes that lost gas earlier today, 10 have already been rehooked up back into the system. but nine more will actually be

operating off a compressed natural gas. a truck was just brought in and they will operate until their repairs are fully made tomorrow. by tomorrow we should actually know the real cause of what happened here. reporting live, tom vacar, ktvu news. some frightening moments outside an east bay auto repair shop today where a bright green box marked radio active was found. people who work at lafayette repair near brown avenue reported the discovery at about 8:30 this morning. the video of the scene was posted on the acalani's booster site. the sheriff's office says the box contained a penetrating radar which was reported stolen. it has now been returned to its owner. family and friends of a missing san jose pilot are not giving up hope of finding him and four other relatives in the idaho wilderness. dale smith and four family members were on their way to montana when their plane

disappeared. family and friends tell the salt lake tribune that they will continue to search the backwoods. more on that angry protest in santa rosa tonight. at issue a sonoma county sheriff's deputy who returned to work today. that deputy shot and killed a 13-year-old boy. this was the heated scene just a couple of hours ago as protesters tried to push their way into the santa rosa city council meeting. and ktvu's christien kafton joins us now. he's been walking and talking with the protesters. christien. >> reporter: we are marching with the protesters right now. we've received repeated warnings from santa rosa police saying that the protesters need to move their protest from the

streets here on to the sidewalks. the protesters not complying with their wishes at this point. i did have a chance to speak to the protester organizers and she tells me this protest is on its way to the sonoma county jail. now from what i understand one of the protesters was detained or arrested by santa rosa police as they tried to enter the city council chambers for the council meeting a little earlier this afternoon. that angered the crowd -- [audio difficulties ] coming up i'll detail the weather for the next coming days. >> they said remember to bundle your kids up because it's really cold. we look at steps parents can take to protect their children.

we want to check in now with christien kafton. we lost his signal right before the break. he is marching with protesters who are marching to the santa rosa jail. >> reporter: we are still marching with the protesters through the streets of santa rosa. we learned this march is headed to the santa rosa county jail. that one protester that had been arrested changed the plans quite a bit. they had first planned to go to the sheriff's office to go protest the shooting of andy lopez. that has now changed. a protester arrested at city council chambers as they were trying to address the city council over their outrage of

the shooting. we will continue to follow this march. they have been ordered by police to get out of the street. there are concerns they may be issues jaywalking tickets or another type of citation. at this point they're willing to do that. we'll continue to monitor this protest and we're on the way to santa rosa jail. deicing equipment failed today forcing delays for at least eight flights. delta airlines owned the deicing machines for terminal a. they say the mechanism that warms up the agent stopped working. passengers on u.s. airways and united were forced to wait. >> we were supposed to leave at 6:15. my flight has not left. had a lay over at salt lake city. now i'm headed over to san

francisco to hopefully catch another flight. >> reporter: other airlines that own deicing equipment offered their machines to help out. new at 6:00, some bay area students are being forced to keep warm by bundling up in their classrooms. last night we showed you the elementary school in oakland with a broken boiler. after that story aired we received phone calls, e-mails and messages on facebook about other schools without heat during this freezing weather. robert handa takes a closer look now at how cold is too cold and how one san jose school tried to solve its dilemma. >> reporter: dorsa elementary is one of the oldest schools and that age shows in this cold snap. the school's old boiler system has been erratic. some parents complained when they got a phone call yesterday from the school recommending students bundle up because of heating problems and then they found out it's been going on for weeks. >> it shocked me that it took this long to get any type of

contact. >> i found out taking my daughter to class and the teacher telling me it's not much warmer inside the class than it is outside. this morning it was 20 degrees. >> reporter: we learned how a school in oakland was going through the same thing. they require steps be taken to maintain a temperature of 68 degrees. dorsa elementary has been taking those measures throughout the week. >> we were able to bring in space heaters to classes that had low temperatures and accomplish comfortable temperatures in the classrooms. >> reporter: if they feel the classroom environment is unsafe, parents are able to file complaints. no one has done that yet. >> i put bulletins when i know in advance. right now we're just trying our best to accommodate. >> reporter: another weather threat rain makes repairing

leaking roofs a higher priority. in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. another freeze warning has been issued for the overnight hours. >> that's right and chief meteorologist bill martin is tracking the cold weather and warm up that is now in sight. >> a warm up headed our way. daytime highs have been in the 40s. today we got some low 50s: tomorrow we will see low and mid-50s. that was today in antioch. cool spot. look at santa rosa. they got down to 54. this is not that warm because it's certainly warmer than they have been. we've been doing temperatures in the 40s. current numbers are 36 in napa. what are they 4 degrees. how cold is it going to be there tonight. back in the teens and low 20s again. so frost advisory for the bay area. we talked about that. you're going to see frost advisory in these blue areas around the bay places like redwood city. places like oakland: point rays. san francisco excluded from the frost advisory. freeze warning for the inland

bay valleys. hard freeze warning for the central valley. so if you had ice or problems with that this morning. obviously frost on windshields, be prepared for that tomorrow morning. 25 in napa. somebody around napa is going to go 29 degrees. that's just how it is. it's going to be a little warmer tomorrow morning but we're still below freezing in many locations. san jose when you send the kids to school tomorrow. 30degrees at 7:00 a.m. lunchtime you're into the upper 40s then boom check that out. 57degrees at 3:00. so a quick -- you will notice it. when you get into the upper 50s. when you've been in the upper 40s you will notice it tomorrow. this high pressure is going to continue to build and continue to warm up. as we go into wednesday, thursday, friday and into the weekend. temperatures on the increase. so we are going nowhere. but a slow increase though. these are the forecast highs for tomorrow. instead of upper 40s, 57 in santa rosa. 55 in fairfield. it's a spare the air day again tomorrow. i don't know if you noticed, you get in traffic and in the morning hours when the inversion is real stable. you can smell a lot of the stuff coming out of the cars or

a lot of the emmitance because the air is so shallow. as we head into wednesday the freeze warning. thursday it's still cold in the morning. you're still going to be upper 20s and low 40s. friday warmer, i think everybody comes up a little bit and in the weekend, looks stunning. no rain in the forecast. that's the thing that's obvious here. it would be nice to have some rain. we've had weather, a lot of weather. but we need the rain. and this five day is sadly to say, the next five day there's really no rain to speak of. so here we go. >> it's been sticking around for a while too. this cold weather. >> it's really hanging in there. >> thank you, bill. bay area law enforcement unveil add new tool used to catch wanted fugitives with a new tool. federal, state and local

for a lefty. >> the winter meetings a lot of talks so far. there haven't been any real block buster deals. but billy bean has been cranking it up. long rumors bret anderson part of the a's over abundance of starting pitchers is now gone. he's headed to colorado. and anderson just 25. very talented but often injured and the big reason behind this deal he was due to make $8 million. a little salary jump there in exchange the a's get two pretty good pitching prospects. a lefty drew palmer who is just 4-14 in 34 big league appearances so far. and a right hander by the name of chris jensen. coach mark jackson of the warriors always says this is a team of no excuses but if they wanted one they might have a little one. in that they have played 14 of the first 22 games out on the road. that's a tough way to start. no team in the nba has played more road games as of yet.
