for that. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. not a bad commute at all. it has been a very nice drive going through the area. northbound and southbound 880 here as you drive through the coliseum area that traffic looks good. 580 all lanes open. traffic looks good from the altamont pass through the castro valley area. if you are looking at the nimitz freeway southbound 880 is off to a good start. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. we begin with breaking news out of oakland. that is where an early morning fire has danged three homes. katie utehs first reporter on the scene and katie, we are hearing that the fire was definitely challenging for our firefighters. are you there katie? >> reporter: that is right. because of budget cuts the second engine from station 20 just eight blocks away from our location here at 90th avenue and eighth street was unable to

respond. the manufacture home where this started presented extra challenges to firefighters because of the nature of that building. fires spread quickly until manufactured homes. it jumped to the home to the right where firefighters are still working to cut into the roof to make sure there are no hot spots in that home. it also spread to the building to the left of the manufactured home. and the commotion woke up neighbors early this morning. >> i woke up to a big noise. you hear firefighters. the first house that caught on fire was a small house. when i came outside they said someone was yelling for help. that it was the woman. i also heard that someone was moving in and the things were there. and i 1:two other houses catching on fire. >> reporter: neighbors shared these pictures with us. you can tee see the flames shooting from the roof of the initial home and the two buildings that were effected.

a family that lived in the house were able to make it out okay. that was the husband, wife, and their child. the other homes were unoccupied but one family as that person mentioned was in the process of moving in at the time. so some of their things were in the home. firefighters are unsure of what caused the fire at this point 3:flames did spread quickly because of how manufactured homes are built. they are just now get into the home to take a look at it. we will check in with firefighters on the cause. they say they will be here for at least another hour. so making sure they knock down any sort of hot spot. i just noticed the red cross also arrived on scene. they will be assisting the family that was displaced by this fire. katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. san rafael elementary is closed after a van ran into the building. it hit the building at 5:45

last night. the crash ruptured a gas line and knocked out electricity to the school. oakland police are now tracking some carjackers who used the stolen cars to commit armed robberies. after a police chase yesterday the suspects abandoned a toyota sedan. it was taken from its owners hours earlier. patrol officers were on the lookout because in two previous carjackings this month they were used in armed robberies. >> when you follow up one carjack incident with a series of armed robberies you look into all incidents. >> the car owner told ktvu news that he was very relieved that is it was found because he uses it for work to give driving lessons.

29-year-old reed whittaker was killed yesterday morning when his car was hit from behind causing it to burst into flames. investigators say the driver whole hit him 53-year-old garcia of livermore failed a sobriety test and was arrested. he is facing dui and vehicular manslaughter charges. now whittaker was an emt for royal ambulance in st. helena- - in st. helena -- in san leandro. the negotiations are over a clause in the contract that allows union workers to receive up to six weeks of paid family leave. the unions ratified the deal. >> i am believing a deal can be made. we have an agreement. we van agreement. let's just see what the district is talking about.

some of the lost children -- some of the mothers that lost children to gun violence last night about 1,000 of them gathered to prevent the violence. they held a benefit dinner at oakland jack london square. they included former oak lands a's pitcher. >> you would know what he's been through. and this has helped tealer and hope to help him and other parents. >> the founder of 1,000 mothers hopes the event brings one night of joy to victims of violence. new details on a story we told you about yesterday morning. staff and parents met last night to discuss an armed robbery at a bingo fundraiser.

pedestrians killed in san francisco. we have obtained new numbers that show 529 pedestrians were injured between october and january of this year. 15 people were killed. executive director of advocacy group walk san francisco say many go unreported. >> we see that there are more people in the hospital than in that collision reports. >> now earlier this year mayor ed lee launched a new pedestrian safety plan. his goal is to reduce the number of deaths by 25% in the next two years and by 50% by 2021. a 7-year-old man hit -- a 79-year-old man hit and killed has been identified. he was hit just after 9:30

cell phone use. there is now a formal agreement among the major wireless carriers. at & t, verizon and t-mobile. that is is typically at the end of a wireless contract and allows phones to be used on other networks. the carriers also agreed to unlock the phones within two days of a request. north korea says kim jong un's uncle has been executed as a traitor. the uncle has been seen a mentor but just days ago the uncle was accused of corruption, womanizing and drugs. he was stripped of all of his power. >> exposing and purging all of his allies is a thousand million times justified.

looking good. warmer weather filling into the bay area for your weekend. another chilly start even below freezing for some. we're talking 28 degrees in napa. you are four degrees below freezing. 29 santa rosa. 34 in novato. wide spread upper 30s to mid 40s right around the bay. if we shift to the east its a freezing start in concord and livermore. 34 lafayette. 33 san ramon. low 40s pittsburgh. we saw clouds pass through. now we are behind it and any rain stayed to the north. it was a very weak system with a few scattered showers reported over the far end of northern california. we've got dry weather in the forecast. we'd like to see some rain but not going to happen. and for your weekend we have

welcome back. it is 4:54. a bipartisan agreement is waiting for house approval. that is after the house approved a spending plan. house speaker john boehner criticized tea party groups that tried to pressure them to vote against that bill. he says the groups have lost all credibility. three bay area members of congress are showing their support for immigration reform by giving up food for 24 hours. george miller passed a symbolic cross to fill up east bay congressman stall well so he can begin his fasting.

tiger woods stepbrother has been arrested on charges of threatening to bomb a government building. 58-year-old earl woods junior was arrested yesterday in phoenix. he told police he was joking when he threatened to blow up the department of economic security building a place where he works. officers say he is apologetic. police in milpitas. before they left they killed the clerk and friends called him moe. police declined to review that led them to the suspects. for the first time since his passing. we can breathe a little easier. though nothing can bring moe back, you have given us the next best thing. justice for an amazing father, husband, and friend.
