we are following breaking news in hayward. crews arrive on the scene of a house fire. what neighbors heard as it started. fire damages several east oakland homes early this morning. the household appliance that sparked the flames. and no classes today at this san rafael elementary school. the crash that knocked out power last night. when it will be restored. coming up. good morning. we are following a number of stories this morning. here is one of them. this is a live picture in san rafael. the damage to a school after a van slammed right into it. this is laurel dale elementary

school. because of what you are looking at right there caused some power problems and school is canceled for the day today. we will have a live report. alex savidge is out there this morning. we will go to him in just a little bit. thank you for joining us i'm pam cook. >> and i'm brian flores. dave clark has the day off. let's get a quick look at weather and traffic. rosemary in for steve. >> yes, good morning to you. it will be a weekend to be outdoors. temperatures are going to be in the mid to upper 60s in some cases. at this hour a different story. its a cold start once again. most of us waking up very similar to yesterday within a few degrees. 30-degrees in concord. slipping to below freezing at this hour. 32 in walnut creek. closer to the bay not as cold. 45 in san francisco. upper 30s mountain view. seeing a little bit of patchy fog out there this morning. clouds hanging over parts of the east bay. we shift to the north. this is where we see some of

our coldest temperatures once again. mid 20s in napa. 36 until petaluma. in addition to the very cold weather, fog reported along some of those low lying areas. so petaluma, novato, and santa rosa. the possibility of fog in and around your neighborhood. if you are stepping out this morning, nothing to be aware of just take it easy. it is patchy in areas. a little bit of patchy frost out there. as we get into the afternoon temperatures will feel quite nice. partly sunny to mostly sunny skies expected for the east bay. right about 7:00 or so temperatures ranging still right around freezing. perhaps just a tad above for areas in livermore. 40 degrees fremont. upper 40s in oakland. lunchtime numbers wide spread 50s in the forecast. so an enjoyable day for you today and a warmup coming our way. i'll have a look at your weekend forecast coming up. rosemary good morning. we do have a good looking commute out there as we look at

the roads. this is a look at highway 80 westbound bay bridge toll plaza just a little better than it normally is. as you can see traffic is moving along relatively well. there are no major problems at the toll plaza. there is a little bit of a backup. nothing you have to worry about. also looking at the commute here on the san mateo bridge. that traffic looks pretty good. there are no major problems as you drive through. and traffic on the peninsula by the way it looks pretty good. once you get there its not a bad commute. i want to move it up to the east bay and 580 and 880 traffic looking good. and also highway 4 as usual. we are getting a little bit of slow traffic here on highway 4. not a big deal but you are going to see some slow traffic as you drive through. and mainly this area the typical construction zone area as you drive through here. 6:03 let's go back to the desk. back to breaking news in hayward. firefighters on the scene of a house fire. this is on fair view avenue.

right near lone tree cemetery. people reported hearing a loud boom. one person says their windows were broken. paul chambers just arrived on the scene. and paul, i understand he is working on getting more information. he is going to have a live report coming up. also new this morning we just learned a fire in oakland started because the family was using their stove to heat their home. the fire started at 2:30 this morning at 90th avenue and a street. the way the home is built with thin walls and flammable materials it posed extra hazards. the family that lives in the home was able to escape but a neighbor says flames were shooting high into the air. >> everything started off really, really fast. by the time that the second firefighter came it was from front to back. >> the other two homes are empty but neighbors say a family was in the process of moving into one of them. we now know the name of the victim of a suspected drunk driving crash on interstate 580

in livermore. 29-year-old reed whittaker was killed when his car was hit from behind. causing it to burst into flames. investigators say the driver that hit him failed a sobriety test and was arrested. he is now facing dui and vehicular manslaughter charges. >> i thought he was just distraught but he could hardly stand. like i said i thought he was either injured or distraught. i didn't realize he would have been drunk. >> whittaker was an emt for royal ambulance in st. helena. the owner of the company says whittaker was passionate about his work. time is 6:05. starting today law enforcement agencies across the bay area will be out in full force as part of their holiday dui enforcement campaign. the enforcement period will be in effect until january 1st. many bay area police departments will be tweeting undates during -- tweeting updates during their dui patrols. and tonight the oakland police

department will have a dui check point set up at an undisclosed location. chp is investigating a deadly crash on highway 280. one person was killed when their car veered off the road and hit a tree. that happened around midnight. the crash closed down the connector ramp from northbound 280 and highway 85. the road reopened two hours later. there will be no classes today at a san rafael elle men tear -- elementary school. alex savidge is joining us now. >> reporter: good morning. that out of control van hit laurel dale elementary school in the worst possible spot. it took out the service line here on the side of the building. that triggered a gas leak but thankfully firefighters managed to prevent what could have been a larger catastrophe they say. let me show you a photo of this accident scene that was tweeted out by the san rafael fire department. this crash happened at 5:45

last night. two people in that van suffered minor injuries. the van ruptured a gasline and triggered a power outage on the campus. that outage threatened to cancel a holiday concert that was planned at the school last night. the event was moved to a nearby church at the last minute. now this morning this is the message put up on the school's website letting parents and students know that classes are canceled for today. school administrators though expect that the gas and electrical issues here on campus will be fixed over the weekend and monday will be a normal school day. but as we bring you back out here live, this crash into the side of the school has caused an unexpected day off from classes. live this morning in san rafael alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. later today a vigil will be held in san francisco to remember the victim's of last year's school shooting massacre in newtown, connecticut.

last night hundreds of people gathered at the national cathedral in washington, d.c. to remember the victims of the sandy hook elementary school shooting. tomorrow marks one year since the gunman shot and killed 20 children on campus and six adults and turned the gun on himself. the vigil in san francisco starts at 1:00 this afternoon at city hall. also later this morning a group of family members of oakland murder victims will return from a trip to washington, d.c. where they were lobbying for gun control laws. they traveled to a group to represent california. the event was organized by the newtown foundation. her son christopher jones was shot and killed on new years eve in 2010. police say he might have been mistaken for someone else. three bay area cities are hosting gun buy back events tomorrow to mark the events at sandy hook one year ago. $100 will be offered for

handguns and $200 for assault weapons. the event in san francisco runs from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the alive and free omega boys club. that son tennessee street. in oakland the buy back will be held at youth uprising. and in san jose people can turn in their events at our lady at guadalupe church from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.. california passed major gun control reforms after the massacre in newtown, connecticut. governor jerry brown signed ten out of 17 bills in response to the sandy hook shooting. one of the new laws requires a safety certificate for gun buyers. and $24 million to help law enforcement track down people who are banned from owning guns. >> we know of nearly 20,000 such people in possession of about 40,000 weapons. that is a good place to start. >> a major bill that failed would have banned the sale of

semi automatic rifles with detachable magazines. you can go to our website at ktvu.com. where we posted a list of bay area events that are being held this weekend in memory of bay town victims. three people are in custody this morning after a stabbing outside of last night's denver broncos game. it happened in a parking lot year sports authority field about 30 minutes after the game ended. three men were taken to the hospital. one is in critical condition. there was a fourth victim but that person left. >> this was a very chaotic scene. there is a lot of witnesses. we are going to have you know be interviewing witnesses throughout the night. no word at all on motivation. i don't know if this is gang related or what caused this. >> not sure if it was game related. the broncos lost to the chargers 27-20. happening today a hearing on the city of san jose's lawsuit against major league baseball over the oakland a's request to move to the south bay. one of the issues set to be

discussed is the importance of a letter sent by the mlb commissioners office to the a's back in june. the letter notified the team that commissioner bud was not satisfied with the proposal. san jose officials say they only found out about the letter last week in a court filing. save oakland's sports is hosting a fundraiser tonight in sell san leandro. they are trying to keep the a's and warriors in the east bay. they will update the two potential sites that have been talked about for a new stadium for the a's. 6:11 is the time right now. security guard for the los angeles lakers is behind bars. what he is accused of stealing from the team's training facility. contract negotiations continue. that is after the agency plans to launch new bus routes this sunday. why that is causing the unions to consider a lawsuit.

authorities in marin county are still working to determine if a bank robbery suspect shot by sheriffs deputy is the so- called cotton ball bandit. that opinion is responsible for several marin county bank robberies. the suspect in the latest robbery was shot wednesday after authorities say he pointed a gun at deputies. investigators searched a search warrant at the suspects home collecting several bags of evidence. sonoma county supervisor is scheduled to enter a plea to charges he peeked inside of a santa rosa's home. it isn't clear if he wants the case to go to trial or if hopes that plea will launch the plea bargaining process. montana accused of pushing her husband off a cliff eight days after their wedding has changed her plea to guilty.

22-year-old jordan graham reached a plea deal for second degree murder just before the jury was set to hear closing arguments. she got into an argument with her husband and she pushed him when he grab the her arm. time 16:15. new problems with the healthcare.gov website. they are hearing from people who think they have signed up but there is nonrecord. insurance companies think the quality of the information they are receiving from the website is improving but they are still finding instances of missing information. this comes after a rush to meet the december 23rd deadline. they want the policy to take effect on january 1st. 50,000 californians signed up for health coverage from the states new health exchange during the first week of december. that is three times the number of people who signed up during the first week back in december. officials say a total of

165,000 people have signed up for coverage. a los angeles lakers security guard is under arrest. police say 23-year-old eddy stole two lakers championship rings and $20,000 in gift cards. he was arrested at the lakers training facility. police say they recovered the ring during a search of his home. the gift cards were going to be given to community groups for christmas. you may have seen the commercial during last sunday's game between the 49ers and seattle sea hawks. it showed angry sea hawks fans screaming at collin kaepernick. however some are planning to boycott the company beat. some of the headphones cost $200. >> i don't know. they like being loud. that is a compliment. >> they do pride themselves in being loud. time 16:17.

i don't know much. you do know more about traffic. >> it looks good. there are not that many. i was looking around here. we do have a couple things going on. but right now highway 4 looks good. let's go there. and the traffic is moving along relatively well there. there are no major problems as you drive on highway 4. i'm also checking out the bay bridge toll plaza. there is a little bit of a backup but it really hasn't been all that big. the traffic continues to move along relatively well. no major problems. looking at the south bay, the traffic is not bad on 101 and 280 as you drive through. bart, hewn ye, and cal train are -- bart, muni, and cal train are doing well. so the crash would be right about here. the traffic is going to be a little bit slow as you approach already from the altamont pass. let's go to rosemary. we have pleasant weather on the way for your weekend. we will have hazy sunshine

another spare the air day. temperatures will begin to trend upward and by the end of the weekend mid to upper 60s in the forecast. which is five to ten degrees above the seasonal average for this time of year. this morning we are looking at temperatures just as cold as yesterday. make even slightly colder in some areas. i'll have a look coming up. but again spare the air alert. meaning that it is illegal to burn in your fireplace unless it is your only source of heat. air quality not too bad. moderate for most. a bit unhealthy. especially for our sensitive groups in and around santa clara valley and into the south bay. when i say sensitive meaning if you are sensitive to the pollutants. outside of that mostly sunny conditions. we are still about an hour away until the official sunrise. 26 right now in santa rosa. another sub freezing morning in some areas. patchy fog reported over parts of the north bay. san francisco reporting partly cloudy skies and 45 degrees.

in the center of grocery stores and ship them for a small fee. most of the products are still bought in stores and this would give amazon an entrance into the market. the photo sharing social network offers instagram direct. it will let you choose to share an individual photo or video with all of your followers. the service works using an app available on google play and apples app store. as you mentioned today is friday the 13th. but it could turn out to be the luckiest day ever. in about 158 minutes from now -- 15 minutes from now one of the largest jackpots in history. court sends a mixed message with its decision. i love watching tv outside.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 6:24 is the time. twitter made a rapid reverse along the blocking feature. it had allowed blocked users to view or tweet at the people that blocked him. now twitter says that action was taken to protect harassment victims. angry users says that was like putting a blindfold -- people can prevent people from

following them or interacting with their tweets. baby boom largely being credited with the population growth. california added 332,000 people from july of last year to july of this year. the nearly 1% growth is the highest growth rate since 2003. alameda and santa claire real county saw the largest percentage increases in the state. glance war memorial in southern california a landmark violates the first amendment and must be taken down. the 43-foot tall cross was built nearly 60 years ago. congress declared it a national war memorial seven years ago but that was challenged by people living near the cross and a group of jewish war veterans. >> not everyone who gave their lives in tho the wars were members of the christian faith. for a certain group of people that was important. >> the judge ordered the cross

to be removed in 90 days then he said it could remain until all possible appeals have been exhausted. the similar case involving san francisco's mount davidson cross was resolved back in 1997 when the cross and land it sits on were sold to a private group. california's capitol city officially in the holiday spirit. governor jerry brown, his wife, and their dog satyra tended the tree lighting ceremony outside the state capitol. that is a pretty tree. it is now covered in large blue, red, and green ornaments. it has 10,000led lights. people attending the ceremony were asked to donate to the food bank. small park in richmond's neighborhood is getting a makeover. the $2 million state grant is helping to revitalize that grant. it is expected to be complete in the spring.

normal slowing. the traffic is backed up to those middle lanes. not a big backup. by the way for those that tweeted me are wondering what is going on in the hayward hills with all the fire engines and stuff. stand by. paul chambers has a report coming up. westbound 580 at north livermore avenue that crash on the shoulder but the altamont pass hasn't been good. its also slow in livermore. its 6:33 let's go back to the desk. >> thank you. now back to our breaking news in hayward. firefighters have put out a house fire there. crews are still there working on hot spots. ktvu paul chambers just arrived on scene and brings us the very latest. paul, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, brian. firefighters were able to make quick work of this but it was very difficult because there was down power lines and gas issues. you can see behind me crews are still here on the scene.

this all happened about 5:00 this morning. reports came in they heard explosions. when firefighters got on scene they say they saw the house fully engulfed. the house is more like an inlaw guest house. when they got to the house they found out there was one man inside. he was taken to the area hospital with minor injuries. like i said people say they could hear explosions and there was glass flying nearby. >> i heard a big crash. a boom and a crash. i thought somebody threw a brick or something through my window. i have a big plait glass window it is five by seven and it blew out. >> reporter: still too early to determine an exact cause of the fire but firefighters say they -- i know pg&e crews are out here. they will repair the power lines and gas is over. so firefighters can determine what was exactly going on. we will stay on top of this and bring you the very latest as it develops.

live in hayward i'm paul chambers. >> thank you. there will be no classes today at a san rafael elementary school after the van slammed into the building. ktvu alex savidge is live in san rafael to tell us why this crash caused so many issues. >> reporter: good morning. that van veered off the road and slammed into the side of the building and took out this pg&e service line. that is what triggered a gas leak. a potentially dangerous situation for firefighters. thankfully they managed to prevent what could have been a larger catastrophe. let me show you a photo of the accident scene that was tweeted out by the san rafael fire department. after this crash happened at 5:45 last night. this school is on woodland avenue. two people inside that van suffered minor injuries and the gas ruptured a gas line. that outage threatened to cancel a holiday concert planned at the school last night. but that event was moved to a nearby church at the last

minute. this morning let me show you the message put up on the school's website letting parents and students know that classes are canceled for the day. school administrators though do expect the gas and the electricity will be fixed and turned back on. the repair work will be done over the weekend here at the school. and they are telling parents and students that monday will be a normal school day. live in san rafael alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police are tracking carjackers who used the stolen cars to commit armed robberies. after a police chase yesterday the suspects abandoned a toyota sedan. patrol officers were on the lookout because in two previous carjackings this month they were used in armed robberies in north oakland and berkeley. >> when you follow up one carjackics accident with a series of armed robberies and it begins to develop into a trend, we want to make sure we treat every instance as

seriously as possible. >> the car owner told ktvu news he is very relieved his car recovered so quickly since he uses it in work. bart and its two biggest labor unions will meet with a mediator. the negotiations are over a clause in the contract that allows union workers to receive up to six weeks of paid family leave. the unions ratified the deal and bart's board of directors approved the contract. it was in the contract all along. but negotiators signed off on the deal and the board should honor it. exclusive field pole shows 52 burst of bay area voters think transit workers should not be allowed to strike. 41% think transit employees should have the right after two bart strikes the poll numbers are slightly different where 47% favor workers right to

strike. meantime ac transit is restoring service this weekend as contract talks between the agency and its union continues. a 60 day court ordered cooling off period ends a week from sunday. new and revamped routes are launching this sunday. it violates the terms of a cooling off period. the union says its preparing to file unfair labor practices. the body of nelson mandela lying in state for authored and final day today. again we are taking you out there live this morning. it doesn't look like a lot of people there. we understand there are nearly 100,000 people waiting in line today. that it is miles long. the government says there may not be enough time for everyone in line to pay their respects. tomorrow mandela's body is scheduled to be transported to a small village where he grew up for a funeral and burial on sunday. the latest death toll from

typhoon haiyan stands at 6,000. it has confirmed the deaths of 6, 009 people and there are nearly 1800 people still missing. it hit the central philippines on november 8th. each day they find at least 20 bodies under the degree. we have new details in a story we reported on yesterday's morning news. staff and parents at oak grove high school in san jose met last night to discuss an armed robbery at a bingo fundraiser for the school band. on wednesday a man in ski mask stole about $5,000 at a bingo game in the school gym. band members say the whole incident is surreal and caught them off guard. >> none of us thought that anyone would steal from ben go. even though its money that is just there. >> the band plans to car riff on after -- carry on after the robbery. they have their winter concert tonight. police are recommending the

school puts money away as its being collected. lottery players hopefully the 13th is their lucky day. that is the second largest jackpot in mega millions history. the rules were changed in october to try to build bigger jackpots to get more people to play. now players pick numbers between 1-75 instead of 1-56. no one has won the jackpot since the change but that is not stopping people from buying a ticket. >> someone is going to be lucky and i think it will be me. >> a lot of people's lives will be much better if i win. >> the odds of winning that jackpot used to be 1-176 million. the new odds of winning are 1- 259 million. coming up elementary school substitute teacher in texas under scrutiny. an oakland family is displaced by an early morning fire that damaged not only their home but two others. i will tell you what the family

welcome back. new this morning oakland firefighters say a family using their oven to stay warm sparked a house fire. katie utehs is telling us what made this fire particularly challenging. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, brian. the fire started in a manufactured home which is particularly dangerous for firefighters because of the building materials used to make manufactured homes. those fires spread really quickly. it all started in the home behind me. you can see the red trim there. the fire then jumped to the home on the right where i'm told that people are moving into that home but were not living there at the time. and then to the left of the original home was also damaged. but that duplex is unoccupied. let me show you some pictures

given to us by neighbors. you can see flames shooting into the night sky. the good news the family that lives in the home a man, woman, and child were able to make it out unharmed so firefighters say the family was using their oven as a source of heat and that is what sparked the fire. >> that is a big wreckage outside. you just hear firefighters. the first house that caught on fire was a small house. when i came outside they said someone was yelling for help. i also heard that someone was moving in and the things were there and then i saw two other houses catching on fire. >> this all started around 2:30 this morning. took firefighters about a half an hour top put it out. as we mentioned because the fire -- it took them a half hour to contain the flames. >> prefab homes. the floors give out.

there is a little bit of a backup. its not like other days. you can see here that the traffic is only about backed up in some of the middle lanes. its about a five minute delay. once you get to san francisco us not bad. on 285 drive time three minute to san bruno. good morning to you. 30 minutes until the official sunrise. and we are looking at mostly sunny skies over parts of our inland communities. but we are also dealing with patchy fog out there. along the east bay shoreline. alodge the coastline. over parts of the north bay and over parts of the north bay it has been noted, patchy and dense. this is that stretch along the valley floor where we see perhaps a little bit of patchy dense fog.

welcome to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. pretty quiet for the indexes this morning. you can see a live look at the big board. dow jones down a little bit. s & p and the nasdaq fluctuating a little bit. started off a little higher this morning. a lot of bay area stocks to watch. one of them adobe systems. right now that stock is up 10% in trading this morning. trading has been volatile over night. ever since they announced profits fell 71% in its last quarter. adobe blames increationed expenses and slower sales. in investors are encouraged by reports that subscribers to its creative cloud service are up much more than expected. google also in the news may be getting ready to make a costly investment that could hurt another silicon valley company.

they are considering making their own profiting chips. that could come into the -- that could cut into the profits of intel. it could help make google cut its costs. it works out it could encourage other internet companies to do the same. north korea says leader kim jong un's uncall has been executed -- uncle has been executed as a traitor. just days ago the uncle was accused of corruption, womanizing, gambling, and even taking drugs. he was stripped of all power. >> exposing and purging him and his allies for challenging our party is a thousand million times justified. >> north korean experts say the execution is an indication of turmoil within the government. others interpret it as a sign that kim jong un is trying to show his country and world that he is in charge. three bay area members of congress are showing their support for immigration reform
