ktvu's katie utehs has been following the story all morning long. she joins us live in oakland with why firefighters had a tough time fighting this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, brian, now that it's daylight, i want to show you exactly what firefighters are talking about. essentially this manufactured home is made in a facility and delivered to the site. the building materials are thinner and the fire spreads quicker if you compare that to the home next door which has a stucco exterior. it was barely touched by the flames but in this manufactured home, this prefabricated home, the fire spread really quickly. now, let me show you some pictures given to us by a neighbor which shows the flames shooting out of the roof of the home. the fire sparked around 2:30 this morning near the intersection of 90th avenue and a street in east oakland. a man, woman and their child escaped without injury, but firefighters say they were using the oven and stove to stay warm and that's what
8:34 am
caused the large fire. >> they were really high. everything started off really really fast. by the time that the second firefighter came, it was from front to back. >> reporter: fire crews contained the fire in about a half hour, but not before it spread to a home to the right where people are in the process of moving in where they weren't at the building at that time. and a duplex on the left of the building was also damaged but it's unoccupied. an engine from fire station 20, which is about 8 blocks away did not respond because of budget cuts, but about 30 firefighters did respond with 7 engines. they were able to put the fire out in about a half hour they said. the family displaced by this fire is being helped by the red cross. as you're taking this live look, you can see how damaged this home is and most likely all of their things inside. we have also learned that the families pets, their dogs were killed in the fire. live in oakland. katie utehs ktvu channel 2
