this is ktvu mornings on 2. and good morning everyone. welcome to mornings on 2. it is saturday december 14th. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. going to check in with rosemary orozco for a look at our temperatures. how's it looking? >> good morning to you claudine and mike. we are looking quite nice out there in most cases. we are dealing with a little bit of patchy fog once again, chilly temperatures, freezing and sub freezing in some cases. if you are dealing with patchy fog, could mean freezing fog, i'll explain what that means coming up. in the afternoon slightly warmer temperatures. it is another spare of the air day. that means illegal to burn in the fireplace unless you are exempt. dry and mild in the extended forecast. unfortunately i don't see any rain in sight. i will show you which will be the warmest days coming up. a year ago today a gunman forced his way into sandy hook elementary school in newtown connecticut and shot and killed 20 children and six adults. the gunman 20-year-old adam lanza also killed his mother that day x-ray tore turned the

gun on himself. today people in newtown and across the country are remembering the victims. the mother of one child who died that day had this message for people as they think about the tragedy. >> i would ask that you be kind and remember but really i would love people everywhere to join sandy hook promise and make the promise to parent together because together we can all be part of the solution and prevent gun violence in our communities. >> newtown is not hosting any formal events to mark the anniversary. families of the victims say they want people to honor their loved ones with acts of kindness. >> charlotte bacon, 6 years old. >> many people here in the bay area are also pausing to remember the victims of the sandy hook shooting. yesterday the names of the victims were read aloud during a gun control rally at san fransisco city hall. there will be another gun control rally and march today at noon at the gene friend recreation center on 6th 6th street in san fransisco and

today many bay area churches will be holding a moment of silence to remember the victims. cities across the country are hosting gun buyback events today to mark the anniversary of the newtown shooting. there are at least three here in the bay area. and katie utehs is live where that city's gun buyback starts starts in a few hours. >> reporter: we're here at our lady of guadalupe church in san jose, the gun buyback a couple hours away, it will go from 9 to 1 a.m. they're asking folks to come through the parking lot. there are going to be two lines for cars and they want you to keep your weapons in the trunk. there's no walkups here this morning, but for those weapons you can get a huge payout. they have $6500 in gift cards to give away, and those are target gift cards. you get $200 for an assault rifle, and $100 for handguns and rifles. again, no walkups. they want you to bring the weapons in your trunks. now coming up in our next live report, i spoke with the san

jose's chief of the foothills division, and he tells me why these gun buybacks are so important and how they don't necessarily take guns out of the hands of responsible owners but they keep them out of the hands of bad guys, people that are committing crimes. so we'll have that in our live report at 7:30. for now live in san jose, katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. the investigation continues into yesterday's deadly shooting at arapahoe high school in colorado. authorities have identified the gunman as 18-year-old karl halverson pierson. peerson went to the school looking for a librarian who reportedly kicked him out of the debate club. the teacher was quickly made aware of the threat and left before being found. that's when peerson shot two students before turning the gun on himself. meanwhile special agents have been going in and out of the house believed to be where pierson lived. the home is located in a name in highlands ranch colorado.

neighbors say agents told them to stay inside until they received an all clear yesterday. many of them say they are still in shock. >> we don't know what to think or feel, like it's just a crazy, crazy feeling. >> it's scary because i have two little girls. to think that it's so close to home and you just never know. >> police say one of the wounded students is in serious condition. the other student's injuries are described as minor. coming up at 7:15. we will have a live report out of colorado. cnn reporter casey wyan will be provide us all the information including what we're learning about the shooter. police in santa rosa say a gang decision pout may be to blame for gunfire. several shots were fired around 9 last night after a confrontation. no one was hit by the gunfire and detectives from the gang crime team are investigating. there's new information about two b.a.r.t. workers who were hit and killed by a train in walnut creek in

october. 66-year-old lawrence daniels and 58-year-old christopher shepherd reportedly never saw the train coming. according to the contra costa times, the autopsy found the two men were facing away from the train and may not have followed safety procedures on the tracks. there was no one looking out for incoming trains. the men were there inspecting a dip in the tracks at the time of the accident. b.a.r.t. and its two largest labor unions have completed two days of negotiations. the sides met thursday and friday with a federal mediator, but no resolution was reached. b.a.r.t. says the inclusion of a clause providing six weeks of paid family leave was a mistake. the union says all sides had agreed to that contract. new this morning, police officers from all across the bay area are reporting a successful night with their dui enforcement campaign. the avoid the dui campaign began last night and runs through january 21st. several bay areas live tweeted what was happening.

at least 12dui arrests have been confirmed and at least 21 law enforcement agencies around the bay area are participating. today is the zen straight spare the air alert which is record for consecutive days in a season. that means you are not allowed to burn wood in your fireplace or stove unless it is your only source for heat. bay area air quality managers say wood smoke is a major source of air pollution during the winter months because of the recent cold dry weather the spare the air days could extend. >> i was so ready to cozy up by the fireplace and darn, it was a spare the air day and i was really disappointed. >> a fireplace is comfortable. i go down and visit my mother and sit by her fireplace. >> first time violators could be fined $100. time now is 7:07. it's certainly cold outside, so if you do have another source of heat, you probably have that cranked on right rosemary? >> yes, and that's definitely a

good idea and you can see the haze in the sky. have you seen it lately? and once you see that, you go, well, okay, i guess i get it even though it would be nice to cozy up next to a fire, don't do it unless of course you have to. giving you a look at the sun coming up. we've got it pointing to the east and another 10 minutes until the official sunrise. we have temperatures on the chilly side, freezing, even sub freezing. let's take a look. 35 degrees at the oakland airport, not that cold in downtown oakland, but it is a chilly start at the airport if you're headed in that direction. low 40s in san fransisco, low 30s for our inland east bay, walnut creek 32, outside your door, 31 in concord, 30 degrees in livermore, to the north bay we have below freezing temperatures. napa you're sitting right about 30, 29 santa rosa, mid-30s in novato. this is where we're seeing some of our chilliest temperatures as we start the morning.

36 degrees ceibas pall. when we get fog and freezing temperatures we get the possibility of freezing fog, and that just means super cool moisture sticking to perhaps those frozen objects. so that could make things a little icy, a little frosty, so that to be aware of, but temperatures will begin to turn around and hopefully that patchy fog not too pesky in your neighborhood this morning. we've seen it a little bit along the coastline and a little bit along the north bay and that's really been about it. i want to show you what's going on here. this ridge of high pressure not so easy to detect, what's no so easy to detect yesterday. today we can see that curvature and that is what is going to continue our warmer weather and we're talking about air quality. moderate for most of us, a little bit unhealthy for the santa clara valley. that's about it for today, but as claudine and mike were talking about, it is a spare the air day. afternoon highs for today slightly warmer than yesterday.

59 for berkeley, 60 degrees san rafael, going to 63 santa rosa, low 60s in oakland, low 60s for concord as well as brentwood. 60 degrees for hayward. into the south bay temperatures warming into the low 60s for san jose, 62 los gatos and santa cruz will take the prize at 66 this afternoon under mostly sunny skies. we do have a light offshore breeze so if you do have fog this morning, it should be chewed up fairly quickly as we get through the mid-morning hours. the extended forecast here at the bay area weekend always in solution notice the warmest day coming tomorrow lasting into monday, even tuesday. we do see a pattern change on wednesday. temperatures cool back down but we are not likely to see any rain. i'll have a look at your lunchtime numbers coming up. this morning the body of nelson mandela is being taken to the eastern cape of south africa where he will be laid to rest and who will be in attendance for that burial. >> and fema denied california's request for aid after the rim fire so the governor went to the president for help. what just happened that could bring relief to the counties

rise and shine giving you a look at the oakland skyline. calm conditions, 41 degrees in downtown oakland. happening today, the body of nelson mandela is headed back to the eastern cape of south africa for burial. a cargo plane carrying the anti- apartheid leader took off from pretoria south africa this morning. the 3 day public viewing has wrapped up.

this week about 100,000 people packed the streets of pretoria chanting tributes for mandela. >> i want to go to see mandela because i want to say bye because of my father is my brother, is my pastor, all things. >> mandela will be buried in the village he grew up. the state funeral is being held under tight security. dignitaries including the reverend jesse jackson and prince charles. one person who will not be there is nobel peace prize winner, desmond tutu. he was a long time friend of mandela and an o'occasional critic of the south african government: more information is coming out about the man who faked sign language december language gestures. he has a criminal record. he was found guilty of theft in 1995 but acquitted of rape and murder around the same time

period. he does not deny these allegations but has blamed schizophrenia for some of his behavior. people in the bay area today will gather to say good- bye to mandela. a service will be held at 10 this morning at the west oakland library, the naacp is helping host that event. there is also a memorial at 3:00 this afternoon at sprou plaza on the campus of uc berkeley and coverage begins tonight at 11 p.m. it's expected to last three hours. the funeral will be streamed live on our web site ktvu.com. authorities are trying to piece together the events that led up to yesterday's deadly shooting in colorado. casey wian is live outside arapahoe high school with what we're learning about the shooting and gunman, casey. >> reporter: claudine, sheriff's investigators say 18- year-old carl peerson walked into this high school armed with a shotgun and two molotov cocktails, bent on revenge against a teacher at the

school. apparently the school library also serves as the school's debate team coach which pierson was a member of. sheriff's say there was some sort of a dispute between the two. the teacher was able to escape as soon as he heard from students that he was being sought by the gunman. however, a 15-year-old girl was shot and remains in critical condition at a local hospital. investigators still try to figure out why she was shot when so many other innocent bystanders were not. there were initial reports that she confronted the gunman. sheriff's investigators now say they're not sure if those are true. right now arapahoe high school behind me remains an active crime scene while this investigation continues. they're also looking into the suspect's car which remains in the parking lot behind me and the house where he lived with his mother and his father's house. they say this investigation is going to continue throughout the weekend.

claudine. casey i know that they had said there were two students initially shot in those initial reports. do we know where those came from? >> reporter: well, that initial report was because a student was covered in blood that was spattered from the student who was actually shot. she thought she was shot. paramedics who responded to the scene thought she was shot. they transferred her to the hospital. they found out it was just blood from another student. there were three other students who were treated for anxiety, panic related issues. they were released two at the scene, one taken briefly to the hospital. you can understand given what they went through why they would experience those symptoms claudine. >> absolutely. all right. casey wian reporting for us outside of the arapahoe high school this morning. thank you so much for that report. a new class of firefighters in san fransisco has graduated. >> congratulations. >> yesterday 43 men and women were sworn in after months of

training, hard work and dedication. the fire team says this group is one of the department's most diverse and most qualified with a wide variety of life experience to help them on the job. >> it means a lot to have a work force that reflects the community we're serving. 16% of the uniform work force is women. over 24% is asian in our department, 10% african- american and about 9 percent hispanic. >> next month the class of 36 recruits will begin 17 weeks of training at the academy. president obama has designed a disaster declaration for this summer's rim fire in the sierra nevada. the wildfire was the third largest in state history. started in august and burned more than 400 square miles after the federal emergency management agency denied the state's request for aid, governor brown asked the president for help. the declaration provides financial relief to that tuolumne and mare poe is a counties. commander station at sfo will receive special training in the

wake of the asiana airlines plane crash. it was revealed that a 16-year- old girl who survived the plane crash was run over by two fire trucks and killed. next year sfo command officers will be sent to texas to attend training on responding to plane crashes. according to the san fransisco chronicle, three commanders in charge of the asiana crash had never taken required disaster training. the drunk driver suspected of killing a man in a fire crash on interstate 580 in livermore is no longer behind bars. the alleged drunk driver. 53-year-old garcia was released yesterday on $125,000 bail. he crashed his hummer into a jeep cherokee. garcia failed a sobriety test. the jeep's driver, 29-year-old reed whittaker died at the scene. >> he was all about helping others. he was about helping his community. he was about helping those who needed the help the most. >> whittaker was an emergency

room technician at highland hospital in oakland. friends and family call him a compassionate and it devoted human being who will truly be missed. a police chase ended with a violent crash in downtown los angeles last night. police try to pull over this silver corvette for reckless driving and possible dui. instead of stopping that driver sped off and the chase ended when the corvette -- there you see it -- crashed right into another car. that car hit a fire hydrant showering the area with water. a wish come true thanks to the golden state warriors, how the golden state warriors did make it a night to remember for a 14-year-old boy and what he was wearing that had special meaning. >> a pleasant afternoon is in store this morning waking up with a little bit of patchy fog, and the temperatures cold in some areas. i'll have a look at what's happening outside your door and the afternoon high expected for you as well. a san jose middle school is getting a whole new look this weekend. 1500 volunteers are taking part in a massive makeover at ocala middle school in east san jose. they included employees from a santa clara technology company and the rock school district are paying for the project which is expect today cost a million dollars. volunteers say they hope the new campus will get students excited about education and encourage thome stay them to stay in school. >> we have to understand if we don't reach them, they can easily be reached by gangs and different groups. >> work on the school is scheduled to wrap up today and students will get to enjoy those improvements when they return on monday. it was a dream come true for a young fan of the golden state warriors. last night the team hosted 14- year-old anthony guzman of massachusetts who is suffering from a life-threatening illness. but check it out. he had a big night and was all smiles as he shot baskets with

warriors star stefan curry. anthony also got a custom made suits from the men's warehouse which was an exact replica of one of curry's favorite suits. prince harry has accomplished his goal of the reaching the south pole to raise money for the walking with the wounded charity. the print and a group of service members trekked 200 miles for three weeks in temperatures as low as negative 30 degrees. they finally reached the south pole yesterday. many of the service members who made the trip are amputees. they came from the u.s., the united kingdom, canada and australia to participate. >> what a great trip, a lot of pride in the south pole. >> very impressive. >> pretty cold there too, but rosemary a lot colder there than here even though we're complaining about it. >> right. and we've got some nice weather coming so even if it is very chilly outside your door right now, we will reach into the 60s, a few of us perhaps in the upper 60s. so a chilly start this morning, patchy fog although i'm not seeing it as widespread as

drop will come on wednesday. back to you. >> the city of san jose has a crack at luring the oakland a's. a federal judge indicated he will probably rule that san jose can appeal an earlier court order which dismissed arguments against major league baseball's antitrust exemption. this clause gives the league the authority to decide where teams can play. >> we want this decision to move up the chain to the appeals court, ultimately to the supreme court, we know major league baseball doesn't want it there. >> yesterday's hearing in san jose's federal court was the first since major league banal rejected the application to relocate. ronald white is expect today issue his ruling within a week. an honor in college football is up for grabs tonight. there are six finalists for the heisman trophy but jameis winston is the odds on favorite. he let the seminoles to the

it has been one year since the mass shooting at a connecticut elementary school that killed 26 people, including 20 children. today cities all across the country are working to get more guns off the street. good morning and welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. san fransisco, oakland and san jose are three of the cities hosting gun buyback events today to mark one year since the shooting. katie utehs is live in the city of san jose where that city's gun buyback event starts in just about 90 minutes. katie. >> reporter: mike, they've raised big money to give away, about $6500, and those will be given away in gift cards. $200 for an assault rifle and

$100 for a handgun or hunting rifle. now we're standing in the back parking lot of our guadalupe -- excuse me. our lady of guadalupe church on east san antonio in san jose. the gun buyback starts at 9 this morning, so about an hour and a half from now. if officers are ready to go before then they may start early. they're getting quite the jump on getting organized this morning. as captain ferrante with the san jose police department explains, today's event is not about taking guns away from responsible people. instead it's about making sure they don't fall into the wrong hands. >> it gives homeowners or gun owners an avenue for getting rid of firearms they no longer want. they don't want to have the responsibility for them, maybe they don't have the ability to store them safely or they're afraid maybe a family member might get ahold of it and hurt themselves or maybe this is a weapon that would be taken in a burglary. >> they're setting up now, and there will be two lines for cars. this is a drive through gun

buyback so to speak, they want people to leave weapons in their trunks. they will not accept walkups. that's $200 for an assault rifle. $100 for a handgun or a hunting rifle. the buy back goes until 1 today, and it is the first time in 12 years that san jose police department has hosted a gun buyback. so come down early because they could run out of gift certificates. 200 bucks, 100 bucks that's good money this time of the year as we get closer to the christmas holiday. live in san jose, katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. gun violence was one of the theme's in president obama's weekly address as he marked the newtown anniversary. >> as a nation, we can't stop every act of violence. we can't heal every troubled mind, but if we want to live in a country where we can go to work, send our kids to school, and walk our streets free from fear, we have to keep trying. >> just an hour ago, the president and first lady

honored the 20 first grader and six adults killed at the school. from the white house, the president and first lady quietly lit 26 candles signifying each of the newtown victims. earlier the president announced that the country has not done enough to make our community safer. mr. obama said too many dangerous people are getting their hands on guns far too easily. the anniversary of the newtown school shooting, one superintendent in alabama says the effort to protect schools has gone too far. the school was installing metal mesh on the glass entrances of an elementary school. that mesh is designed to stop bullets and keep people from forcing their way on to campus. the district superintendent has put a stop to that installation. >> the superintendent looked at it and decided he didn't like the way it looked. it wasn't pretty enough, so he stopped it. >> my assessment of it had nothing to do with the appearance of it. it had to do with whether or not we were going to have a fortress for a school. >> the metal mesh was just one step the school was taking to

improve security. it also has a full-time police officer and has installed upgraded surveillance systems. a burglar investigation has uncovered a stash of weapons. police released this picture yesterday of the assault rifles, ammunition, large capacity magazines and body armor that was found inside a home on caroline street. they arrested three people, 32- year-old tahman howard of vallejo and two 18-year-olds from san fransisco. they were also arrested. a teenager who's not even old enough to drive has been arrested on suspicion of carjacking in oakland. the 13-year-old suspect was taken into custody yesterday morning. police say the teen led them on a chase in a stolen car and then crashed into a front yard of a home on adeline street. officers say the car belongs to a 78-year-old man who had been carjacked near 9th and alice streets. it is the latest in a series of crimes in that area. >> recently we have seen an increase in carjackings in downtown oakland and we believe

that those -- some of them have been related to robberies. >> on thursday police say there was a carjacking at 6th and alice streets, and earlier this week there was a street robbery in the same area. police say they are considering domestic violence charges after a fight on the san mateo bridge led to a man jumping off the bridge into the water. news chopper 2 flew over the scene as the man was clinging to a rope while he was swimming toward the coast guard boat. it took three rescuers to pull him out and according to police he and his wife were arguing inside their suv when it crashed into the guardrail on the bridge. officers say the couple then got out of the car, and the fight got physical. hayward firefighters tell us the man was so upset he jumped about 15 feet into the water. time now 7:35. a handful of activists are protesting evictions at the albany bowl. demonstrators gathered outside the berkeley officers of the sierra club. they say they oppose efforts to dismantle a homeless encamp.

on a piece of land along the albany waterfront. it says the sierra club violates its own policy by supporting the eviction. >> i'm not sure where many of them are going to go. i think it would be a shame to put people's lives at risk. >> the sierra club favors plans to incorporate the bulb into the regional park system, about 50 to 60 people have been living there, some for many years. the official start of winter not for about another week t. is chilly this morning right now. rosemary you're saying there's a warmup as we make our way towards that official start of winter? >> yes, you're right and we've been experiencing this warmup, but it has been so gradual mike that it's been hard to tell. if you remember back on monday, we were struggling in the 40s in the afternoon. today we're in the 60s, so we have seen a change. it's been gradual and at times it doesn't seem like there's been any change at all, but we sure have warmed up over the course of the week. overnight lows have warmed up as well. with that said it's still freezing in some areas, giving

you a look there at the hazy sky over mount diablo. sun is up and our it happens will slowly begin to rebound through the early morning hours, and then we'll see again a nice mild day for the afternoon. temperatures today slightly warmer than yesterday. 33 degrees right now in antioch, 29 in fairfield, some of the coldest temperatures over parts of the north bay. napa 30, santa rosa 28, mid-30s in novato with patchy fog reported this morning. it's not as widespread as i saw it yesterday morning, and temperatures over parts of the north bay and the inland east bay actually slightly warmer than yesterday. again, keeping in mind relatively speaking because we're still freezing in some areas. oakland, chillier this morning, oakland yesterday morning had low clouds bank eting the area. this morning waking up mostly sunny and because of it we're colder, but it's going to feel better with the sunshine. 34 half-moon bay, last half hour we went north. this time we'll go east. we're looking at 36 degrees outside your door, pittsburgh 35 brentwood, low 30s just a

about two b.a.r.t. workers who were hit and killed by a train in walnut creek in october. 66-year-old lawrence daniels and 58-year-old christopher shepherd reportedly never saw the train coming. according to the contra costa times, the autopsy report found the two men were facing away from the train. the report says that may indicate that the two did not follow safety procedures on the tracks that includes one person servingas a lookout for incoming trains. the men were inspecting a dip in the tracks at the time of the accident. new this morning, it is time of the year for holiday parties and law enforcement agencies across the bay area are reminding drivers not drive drunk. avoid the dui campaign kicked off last night and runs through the first of the year. numbers are coming in, but we do know there have been at least 39dui arrests in alameda county since friday, six dui arrests have been reported in sonoma county. time now is 8:08, let's turn over to rosemary orozco for a check of how this day is

is suspected of killing a man in a fiery crash in livermore is no longer behind bars. 53-year-old per meet know garcia was released yesterday on $125,000 bail. on thursday morning garcia crashed his hummer into a jeep cherokee. garcia failed a sobriety test and they arrested him on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. 29-year-old reed whittaker died at the scene. >> he was all about helping others. he was about helping his community. he was about helping those who needed the help the most. >> whittaker was an emergency room technician at highland hospital in oakland. friends and family call him a compassionate and devoted human being who will be missed. a wild chase in downtown los angeles ended with an officer involved shooting. police shot and killed the driver after he crashed right into another car following an hour-long chase through several neighborhoods including huntington park. the man had been driving with his lights off and police say there was growing concern that bystanders could be hurt.

the vatican is getting into the holiday spirit. the vatican christmas tree has been lit in st. peters square. the 82-foot fir was donated by a town in germany and thousands of visitors flock to the vatican every year for the holidays to hear the pope's christmas eve mass and christmas day address. a san jose middle school is getting a whole new look this weekend, 1500 volunteers are taking part in the massive makeover at ocala middle school in east san jose. the employees from a santa clara technology company will be there to help out, the city of san jose and the allen rock school district are paying for the project which is expected to cost a million dollars. volunteers hope the new campus

the country has not done enough. >> and on the anniversary of the school shooting, one superintendent in alabama thinks the idea of protecting schools has gone too far. the school was installing metal mesh on the glass advances of an elementary school. the mesh is designed to top bullets and keep people from forcing their way on to campus. the district superintendent has put a stop to the installation. >> the superintendent looked at it and decided he didn't like the way it looked. it wasn't pretty enough, so he stopped us. >> my assessment of it had nothing to do with the appearance of it. it had to do with whether or not we were going to have a fortress for a school. >> the metal mesh was just one step the school says it was taking to improve security. it also has a full-time police officer and better surveillance systems. police in santa rosa say a gang dispute may be to blame for gunfire. several shots were fired around 9:00 last night after a confrontation in front of an

apartment complex on olive street. no one was hit by the gunfire. officers investigating a burglary turned up a number of weapons inside a vallejo home. police released this picture of the assault rifles ammunition, large capacity magazines and body armor that was found. police say the guns were inside a home on caroline street. they arrested 32-year-old taman howard of vallejo, 18-year-old jerry howard and 18-year-old keano hodges. a teenager who's not old enough to legally drive has been arrested on suspicion of carjacking in oakland. the 13-year-old was taken into custody yesterday morning. the teen led them on a chase in a stolen car and then crashed in the front yard of a home on adeline street. officers say the car belongs to a 78-year-old man who had been carjacked. it's the latest in a series of crimes in that area. >> recently we have seen an increase in carjackings in downtown oakland, and we believe that those -- some oaf

them have been related to robberies. >> on thursday there was a carjacking at 6th and alice streets and earlier this week there was a street robbery in that same area. police say they are considering domestic violence charges after a fight on a san mateo bridge led to a man jumping off the bridge and into the water. news chopper 2 flew over the scene as that man was clinging to a rope while he was swimming towards a coast guard body -- boat. according to police he and his wife were arguing inside their suv when it crashed into the guardrail on the bridge. officers say the couple then got out of the car and the fight got physical. hayward firefighters tell us the man was so upset he jumped about 15 feet right into that water. children's programs have been shut down at the ukiah library in mendocino county because of a mold problem. the mold was found in the children's section of the library. the librarian said the shutdown is just a precaution. contractors say they will check out the problem sometime next week. in the meantime some of the children's books will be moved to the main library.

the medical examiner says lynne spalding was being treated for alcohol him and likely died after becoming delirious from dehydration and liver problems. she was missing 17 days before her body was found in a stairwell at the hospital in october. friends of spalding are far from satisfied with the report and say they will ask for a grand jury investigation. they say the medical examiner failed to conclusively determine how and when she died. >> the cause of lynne spalding's death is neglect and malfeasance on the part of san fransisco general hospital and the san fransisco sheriff's department. >> spalding's death has triggered multiple investigations into the handling of her disappearance. investigators say sheriff's officials did not search the entire hospital for her and received inaccurate information that she was african or asian american and wearing hospital clothing. log on to ktvu.com for continuing coverage of the patient death at san fransisco general. we have posted the medical examiner's report, so you can

read it for yourself. sheriff deputies in marin county are trying to confirm whether or not a bank robbery suspect in novato is the cotton ball bandit. we are learning more about the man they have in custody and he apparently has a long criminal history. christopher wooten served time in prison for kidnapping a woman during a 1978 art heist. wooten was shot by deputies wednesday. authorities are investigating whether or not he's the cotton ball bandit who is suspected in at least 11 bank robberies in the north bay during the past year. the suspect in those robberies wore a distinctive brown knit cap with ear flaps flaps and a cotton ball taces the. in saratoga authority haves identified 43-year-old brandon marshall of sunnyvale as the man shot and i killed by deputies o'en tuesday. deputies say they opened fire after marshal attacked them

. good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2, saturday, december 14th. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. we want to go over to rosemary for a check on how our saturday is shaping up this morning. good morning, rosemary. >> good morning to you. we have an enjoyable day in the forecast. warming trend continues for your weekend. i want to do a comparison here. last weekend to today, take a look at these numbers that we had last weekend. it has been a slow process, but we are finally back to the seasonal average. concord, 43 degrees last sunday. today, going to about 61 degrees. so we do have changes. we have seen them, painfully so, but we've seen the changes come our way and we are not stopping here. temperatures will be even warmer for tomorrow. i'll have a better look at what you can expect for today, what i expect of the warmest day, and we'll take a look at current conditions as well. back to you. a year ago today, a gunman forced his way into sandy hook elementary in newtown, connecticut and shot and killed 20 children and six adults. the gaughanman also killed his

mother that day, then later turned the gun on himself. today, people in newtown and across the country are remembering the victims. the mother of one child who died that day had this message for people as they think about the tragedy. >> i would ask that you be kind and remember, but really i would love people everywhere to join sandy hook promise and make the promise to parent together, because together, we can all be part of the solution and prevent gun violence in our communities. >> newtown is not hosting any formal events to mark the anniversary. families of the victims say they want people to honor their loved ones with acts of kindness. >> charlotte bacon, 6 years old. [ bell ringing ] >> many people in the bay area are also pausing to remember victims of the sandy hook shooting. yesterday, the names of the victims were read aloud during a gun control rally at san francisco's city hall. there will be another gun control rally in march today at noon at the jean friend

recreation center near fulsom in san francisco. many bay area churches will hold a moment of silence to remember the victims. happening now, three major bay area cities are hosting gun buybacks. the objective is to take weapons off the streets and prevent any deadly incidents from happening here. ktvu's katy yutes is live in san jose where the gun buyback is getting started. >> reporter: it just opened up a couple of minutes ago. there are already cars rolling through. i'll show you the line, people bringing in an assault weapon just came in, a couple of weapons per car. they tell us that they have already taken in in the last few minutes about 30 weapons. let me show you some of the rifles that have been brought in. we've seen magazine clips and handguns as well. people are eager to grab up the gift cards being offered, but there are mixed feelings about the effectiveness of gun buybacks. >> if you have something laying around you don't want, get a hundred bucks for it, but i don't think it's a solution to

anything. >> reporter: officers we spoke with say the benefit of gun buybacks is that it keeps weapons out of the hands of burglars who steal guns during home break-ins. in a partnership between the san jose police department and district attorneys office, the agencies have raised $6500 to give away in the form of target gift cards. today, you get a $200 gift card for an assault rifle or a $100 gift card for a handgun or hunting rifle. we spoke with a retired marine who says he just doesn't need many of his guns anymore. he was third in line this morning and turning in a british infield rifle and .22- caliber semi automatic rifle. >> i think it's a good idea, because if anybody opens up their eyes and ears on new year's eve, they can get a really good sense of the type of guns they have in the community, any community, not just san jose. >> reporter: back out here live, we are in the parking lot of our lady of guadalupe church

on san antonio avenue. if you want to come out, you can see that there are two lanes of cars pulling through. and you can come out and be anonymous. turn in those guns and get a gift card in exchange. now, the buyback is scheduled to go until about 1:00 today. however, who knows how long the gift cards will last at this rate. cars are coming through and people are dropping off two to three guns at a time. we'll be back here again in about half hour to give you an update on how the gun buyback is going. for now, live in san jose, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2news. classmates and neighbors of the gunman behind colorado's deadly school shooting are now opening up about the suspect. classmates say 18-year-old karl pierson was very involved at arapahoe high school. they say he was a gifted debater and ran on the high school track team. neighbors say his parents divorced in 2011, but that the family was religious and continued to attend bible study meetings. investigators say pierson went to the school yesterday,

looking for a librarian who reportedly kicked him out of the debate club, but they say the teacher left campus after being made aware of the threat. police say that did not stop pierson from shooting and critically injuring a female classmate. students at the school at the time of the shooting discussed what they saw and heard. >> it was pretty scary. there were two shots by my classroom. we heard screaming. >> you think it's a drill at the beginning because you go through so many. then when you get texts from people out of school, out of state, it's surreal. it hasn't sunk in yet. >> our teacher locked the door and i sat in the middle with my two best friends and we tried to stay calm. >> heard like a shot and it sounded like a book dropping on the ground. then there was another one and so we all dropped everything we had and went in lockdown. i dropped to my knees and

started praying. i said, jesus, please be with her, keep her safe. she's safe, and i'm thankful. >> a student in the classroom looked outside the classroom to see if anything was in the hallway and then another student said, i think that was a gunshot. so soon as he said that, we pulled that other guy back in the classroom, locked the door, hid in the corner. that's what we're supposed to do. >> we heard two really loud bangs coming through the hallway and we've never had a gunshot before, so he assumed it was something banging on the lockers. then we heard lots of yelling and more of the loud bangs. so we sprinted out of there and just ran through the parking lot and waved at the first person driving by. >> we did, like, mini drills and stuff for practice, so we were, like, prepared and we knew where we were going. so i think we did good. i mean, my teacher said that we did good. >> special agents have been seen going in and out of the house where police say pierson lived with his mother. the home is located in

highlands ranch, colorado. neighbors say agents told them to stay inside until they received an all-clear. many say they are still in shock. new this morning, it is that time of year for holiday parties. law enforcement agencies across the bay area remind drivers not to drink and drive. the avoid the dui campaign kicked off last night and runs through the first of the year. numbers are still coming in at this hour, but we know there have been at least 39 dui arrests in alameda county in the past 24 hours. six dui arrests have been reported in sonoma county. today is the seventh straight spare the air alert, which is a record for consecutive days in a season. that means you're not allowed to burn wood in your fireplace or stove unless it's your only source for heat. bay area air quality managers say wood smoke is a major source of air pollution during the winter months and because of recent cold, dry weather, they say spare the air days could even extend right into next week. >> i was so ready to use it to cozy up by the fireplace.

. welcome back. a look here from ktvu towards the city of san francisco, that's a pretty shot. mostly clear skies, hazy sun for today and 47 degrees in downtown san francisco right now. happening today, the body of nelson mandela is on its way back to the eastern cape of south africa for burial. a cargo plane carrying the antiapartheid leader took off from pretoria, south africa this morning. the three-day public viewing of mandela's body has wrapped up. this week, about 100,000 people packed the streets of pretoria, chanting tributes for mandela. >> i want to go to see mandela because i want to say bye, because he is my father, my brother, my pastor, all things. >> mandela will be buried in the village where he grew up. the state funeral is being held

under extremely tight security. one person who will not be there is nobel peace prize winner, retired archbishop desmond tutu. he is a long-time friend of mandela and an occasional critic of the current south african government. desmond tutu's daughter says the archbishop did not receive credentials to attend the funeral. people in the bay area today will gather to say good- bye to mandela. a service will be held at 10:00 this morning at the west oakland library. the naacp is helping host the event. there is also a memorial at 3:00 this afternoon on the campus of uc berkeley. ktvu will air the funeral live on air. coverage begins at 11:00 p.m. and is expected to last for about three hours. the funeral is also going to be streamed live on our website, at ktvu.com. meantime, more information is coming out about the man who faked sign language gestures during mandela's memorial service on tuesday. a south african news agency

says the man has a criminal record. he was found guilty of theft in 1995, but acquitted of rape and murder around the same time period. he does not deny those allegations, but he was blaming schizophrenia for some of his behavior. a wild chase overnight in downtown los angeles ends with an officer-involved shooting. police say officers shot and killed a driver after he crashed into another car following an hour-long chase through several neighborhoods, including, there is the crash, huntington park. the man had been driving with his lights off. police say there was growing concern that bystanders could be hurt. the alleged drunk driver suspected of killing a man in a fiery crash on interstate 580 in livermore is no longer behind bars. 53-year-old prim garcia was released yesterday on $125,000 bail. officers say on thursday this morning, garcia crashed his hummer into a jeep cherokee. the chp says garcia failed a sobriety test and arrested him on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. the jeep's driver, 29-year-old

reid whitaker, died at the scene. >> he was all about helping others. he was about helping his community. he was about helping those who needed the help the most. >> whitaker was an emergency room technician at highland hospital in oakland. friends and coworkers call him a compassionate and devoted human being who will truly be missed. president obama signed a disaster declaration for the summer's rim fire in the sierra nevada. the wildfire was the third large nest state history. it started back in august and burned more than 400 square miles after the federal emergency management agency denied the state's request for aid. governor brown asked the president for help. the declaration provides financial relief to tuolumne and mariposa counties. commanders stationed at sfo will receive special training in the ache of the asiana airlines. the new training comes after it was revealed that a 16-year-old girl who survived the plane crash was run over by two fire trucks and killed.

sfo he's-based officers will be sent to texas next year for training on responding to crashes. three commanders in charge of the asiana crash had never taken safety training. a new firefighter class in san francisco has now graduated. yesterday, 43 men and women were sworn in after months of training, hard work and dedication. the fire chief says this group is one of the department's most diverse and most qualified, with a wide variety of life experience to help them on the job. . a san jose middle school is getting a whole new look this weekend. 1500 volunteers are taking part in a massive makeover at a school in east san jose, including employees from nvidia, a santa clara technology company. nvidia, the city of san jose and the allen rock school district are paying for the project, which is expected to cost about $1 million. volunteers say they hope the new campus will get students excited about education and encourage them to stay in school. >> we have to understand that if we don't reach them, they can easily be reached by gangs and different groups. >> work on the school is scheduled to wrap up today and students will get to enjoy the improvements when they return

on monday. it was a dream come true for a young fan of the golden state warriors. last night, the team hosted 14- year-old anthony guzman of massachusetts, who is suffering from a life-threatening illness. he was all smiles, as he shot baskets with warriors star steph curry. the visit was organized by the warriors organization. he also received a custom-made suit from the men's wearhouse, which is an exact replica of one of curry's suits. prince harry has reached the south pole, reaching his goal to raise money for the walking with the wounded charity. they tracked 200 miles for two weeks in temperatures as low as 30 degrees. many service members who made the trip are amputees and they came from the u.s., the united kingdom, canada and australia to participate. >> lot of pride at the south pole. great to see. let's check in with rosemary. cold here, not as cold as the south pole, but still chilly. >> this is true, although if you're heading to the sierra,

like yesterday and you're right about there. tomorrow is going to be the warmest day of the weekend, but we won't stop there. monday, going to be the warmest day of the next several days, perhaps even hitting 70 degrees in some areas. we will be mostly sunny on tuesday. temperatures cool just a tad. bigger drop coming our way by midweek wednesday. unfortunately, no rain in that extended forecast. back to you. >> thanks, rosemary. work crews in millbrae are monitoring the city's water lines after a half dozen water pipes suddenly burst, leaving hundreds of people without water. that first pipe broke thursday night and then five more shortly after. engineers are still trying to figure out why there were so many breaks around the same time, in the same water distribution system. millbrae's mayor says the pipes are 65 years old and only designed to last 50 years. >> we really do need to look at all of our infrastructure. i think that's a challenge for our city. >> it's not easy when you don't have your water. you appreciate it. >> at one point, a thousand homes were without water, but it is now back on. the mayor says there is not enough money, though, to

replace the pipeline system. children's programs have been shut down at the library in mendocino county because of a mold problem. the mold was found in the children's section of the library. the county librarian says the shutdown is a precaution. contractors will check out the problem next week. in the meantime, some of the children's books will be moved over to the main high breaker. 21 businesses in petaluma have been cited during an alcohol sting. the state department of alcohol beverage control says 76 locations were checked out during the sting last week. agents say the businesses cited either served or sold alcohol to a minor. they are are subject to fines or removal of licenses. the city of san jose says it still has a crack at luring the oakland a's to the bay. a federal judge will probably rule that san jose can appeal an earlier court order which

. happening now, cities across the country are hosting gun buyback events to mark the first anniversary of the school shooting in newtown, connecticut. good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. san francisco, oakland, san jose, just three of the cities hosting gun buyback events right now to try to get guns off the streets. ktvu's katie utehs is live in san jose, where that city's gun buyback event started about half an hour ago. >> reporter: claudine in just a half an hour, they turned in more than 100 guns here in san jose. those numbers continue to climb. i'll show you some of the weapons that have been turned in. these are lot of the rifles. we're also seeing handguns, lots of ammunition, and then if we move over here, this is a russian assault rifle. so we are just seeing all sorts of different weapons that move up to the car line here, i'll have my photographer show you, people are just continuing to roll through. i want to show you some video we just shot of yet another

assault rifle. officers tell me this was just sitting in someone's garage. the person turned in the rifle and magazine clips as well. we're seeing a wide range of weapons from antique rifles to revolvers. today's buyback is a partnership between the san jose police department and the district attorney's office. the agencies raised some $6500 to give away in the form of gift cards, 200 for an assault weapon, and 100 for handguns or hunting rifles. for many we've talked to, the incentive of a gift card was enough to bring them to the buyback. >> well, i think it's a good idea because if anybody opens up their eyes and ears on new year's eve, they can get a really good sense of the type of guns they have in the community, any community, not just san jose. >> reporter: officers say the hope is that by turning in spare guns, the weapons will be less likely to fall into the hands of burglars during home break-ins. others are not sure that gun buybacks are effective and say

any time you start talking about guns, people get fired up. >> it becomes emotionally charged. you know, the second amendment rights and the fact that, you know, we should have the legal right to protect ourselves. so it's -- i don't know. i don't know how i feel about it personally. people that are mentally ill shouldn't have guns, but that's got nothing to do with this, you know. so if we're accomplishing anything today to get guns off the streets, no, i don't think so. >> reporter: back out here live, you can see the long line. there are two lines here at our lady of guadalupe charge off of san antonio road in san jose. this is the line where folks are okay with us showing. there's a second line where you can remain anonymous to turn in that weapon. the gun buyback goes until 1:00 this afternoon, but there are so many weapons rolling in that i would not be surprised if they went through all of those gift cards before then. so if you have a weapon to turn in, come on down as soon as you can. live in san jose, katie utehs,

ktvu channel 2news. gun violence was one of the themes in president obama's weekly address as he marked the newtown anniversary. >> as a nation, we could stop every act of violence. we can't heal every troubled mind, but if we want to live in a country where we can go to work, send our kids to school and walk our streets free from fear, we have to keep trying. >> at 6:30 this morning, the president and the first lady honored the 20 first graders and six adults killed at the school from the white house. the president and first lady quietly lit 26 candles, signifying each of the newtown victims. earlier, the president said the country has not done enough to make our community safer. he said too many dangerous people are getting their hands on guns far too easily. on the anniversary of the school shooting, one superintendent in alabama says the effort to protect schools has gone just too far. the school was installing metal mesh on the glass entrances of an elementary school. the mesh, the school says, is

designed to stop bullets and keep people from forcing their way onto campus. but the district superintendent has put a stop to its installation. >> the superintendent looked at it and decided he didn't liked the way it looked. it wasn't pretty enough, so he stopped us. >> my assessment of it has nothing to do with the appearance of it. it had to do with whether or not we are going to have a fortress for a school. >> the metal mesh was just one step the school was taking to improve security. it also has a full-time police officer and has installed upgraded surveillance systems. there's new information about two bart workers who were hit and killed by a train in walnut creek in october. 66-year-old lawrence daniels and 58-year-old christopher shepherd reportedly never saw the train coming. according to the contra costa times, the autopsy report found the two men were facing away from the train and may not have followed safety procedures on the tracks. the report indicates that there may not have been anyone looking out for incoming trains. the men were inspecting a dip in the tracks at the time of

the accident. bart and its two largest labor unions completed two days of negotiations about a disputed issue in their contract. no resolution was reached. bart says the inclusion of a clause providing six weeks of paid family leave was a mistake. the unions say all sides had agreed to that contract. police are considering domestic violence charges after a fight on the san mateo bridge led to a man jumping off the bridge into the water. news chopper 2 flew over the scene as the man was clinging to a rope while he was swimming toward the coastguard boat. it took three rescuers to pull him out. the man and his wife were arguing in an suv on the bridge, when it crashed into the bridge. officers they got out of the car and it got physical. heyward firefighters tell us the man was so upset, he jumped about 15 feet, right into the water. a handful of activists are protesting evictions at the albany bulb. last night, demonstrators were outside the offices of the

sierra club, opposing efforts to dismantle a homeless encampment on a piece of land on the albany waterfront. the group, share the bulb, says the sierra club violates it's only environmental justice policy by supporting the evictions. >> if they get kicked off the bulb, i'm not sure where many of them are going do go. it would be a real shame to put people's lives at risks. >> the sierra club favors plans to incorporate the bulb into the regional park system. about 50 to 60 people have been living there, some for many years. starting out with a view of san jose, we do have a haze, a few high clouds. this haze, again, linked to another spare the air day. moderate air quality for most of us, but in this area, san jose and for the santa clara valley, we are with air quality just a bit poor in some cases. if you are going to be outdoors, out and about, you

suffer from respiratory issues, maybe have asthma, this to be aware of. it's borderline. we're talking 105, the reading for santa clara valley. the rest of us within the moderate category, but slightly poorer for areas along the valley floor there in san jose for today. this is the seventh straight day of spare the air, so not something we see normally. in fact, it's a record for the air quality management district. ridge of high pressure remains in control of our weather pattern. it's going to be strengthening over the area in time for the weekend. we've got offshore winds developing. they are light, but they are there. we're seeing it in our temperatures. our temperatures are starting to warm. areas like half moon bay, jumping several degrees in a matter of just about an hour. mid-50s reported at the airport and half moon bay. you may notice high clouds, san jose, san jose, a few high clouds drifting overhead. happens to be high clouds in and around the ridge of high pressure and the flow sending high clouds our way. that's really about it. hazy sky for today.

welcome back. thank you for joining us this morning. a live look into the alameda shipyard this morning. widespread mid to upper 40s around alameda at this hour. 9:44 on the clock. let's recap our top stories this morning. today is the first anniversary of the deadly shooting at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. last year, a gunman shot and killed 20 children and six adults, then killed himself. at least three bay area cities are hosting gun buyback events to mark the anniversary. the investigation continues into yesterday's deadly colorado school shooting, as class made and neighbors are now opening up about the gunman. they say he was very involved at school and that he was on the debate team and ran track. deputies say the suspect shot a female suspect before turning the gun on himself. the girl remains in critical condition. today is the seventh straight spare the air day alert in the bay area. you are not allowed to burn wood in your fireplace or stove unless it is your only source for heat. first time violators could be fined $100 or take an online

course on air pollution. two of the oldest known world war ii veterans have met for the first time. richard overton is an army vet. elmer hill served in the navy. both men are 107 years old, with hill being just three months younger. their rare and historic meeting took place in austin, texas. >> i'm glad to be here, but i wasn't expecting it to create this kind of an activity. >> well, overton recently met president obama. hill will get his chance to meet the commander in chief on monday. this morning, northeastern leader kim jong-un is facing worldwide condemnation for killing his uncle. more deaths could follow as jong un continues to try to consolidate power. his uncle was executed amid accusations that he was planning a government takeover. political observers say his death could be a sign that kim jong-un's transition has not been as smooth as previously believed.

we're also learning about an airport technician accused of plotting a suicide attack at wichita's midcontinent airport. the fbi says terry loehen was arrested yesterday after trying to drive a car full of explosives onto the tarmac. the fbi says the must be as we never in danger. they say he left a letter for his family, saying he wished to be a martyr for islam and was affiliated with a branch of al- qaeda in the arabian peninsula. >> when he went to midcontinent airport to detonate the bomb, he was taken into custody when he attempted to open the security gate with his pass. >> officials say he had spent months studying flight schedules and the airport layout in order to inflict the highest number of casualties. his security card allowed him access to restricted areas of the airport. the fbi is offering a $250,000 reward for search for an animal rights extremist who tried to blow up two bay area companies. 35-year-old daniel andreas san diego is accused of planting

bombs at a nutrition company in pleasanton and another biotech company in the area. investigators say he may have targeted the companies because of a link to another firm that used animals for scientific research. >> i think it's important to let the community know that he still is a danger and we would very much like to get him into, into custody, if possible, not only for the community's sake, but for his sake. >> the fbi considers san diego armed and dangerous because of his bomb-making skills. tips have placed him in northern california and on the east coast. sprint may be planning to merge with t-mobile in a deal that could shake up the smartphone market. the "wall street journal" reports sprint could make an offer to t-mobile in the first half of 2014 in a deal where $20 billion, leaving the u.s. with just three major wireless carriers. it is unclear whether antitrust regulators would approve the deal after rejecting a merger between at&t and t-mobile back in 2011. it's another milestone for efforts to bring high speed

rail to california. a state board has given the approval for a 2.5-acre property in fresno to be seized through eminent domain. it is the first piece of land to be seized by the government in the project to build the $68 billion bullet train. rail officials say the land must be seized because they have been unable to come to terms with the owner on an offer. more information now in the investigation into the death of a woman found in a stairwell at san francisco general hospital. the medical examiner says lynn spalding was being treated for alcoholism and likely died after becoming delirious from dehydration and liver problems. spalding was missing for 17 days before her body was found in a stairwell at that hospital back in october. friends of spalding are far from satisfied with the report and plan to ask for a grand jury investigation. they say the medical examiner failed to conclusively determine how and when she died. >> the calls of lynn spalding's death is neglect and mal fees sans on the part of san francisco general hospital and the san francisco sheriff's

been related to robberies. >> and on thursday, there was a car jacking at 6th and alice streets. and earlier this week, there was a street robbery in that same area. el cerrito police are warning people to be on the lookout for two aggressive scam artists. police say three separate incidents were reported yesterday afternoon. the scam, they say, starts when older men are approached by two women who accuse the men of hitting them with their car. the women then demand money for medical bills. in one case, the women followed the victim home. in another, they followed the man right to an atm. one of the suspects is described as being 75 to 80 years old, with white hair, about 5' 3. the other is 35 to 40 years old with dark hair and about 5' 4 tall, driving a blue 2003 honda crv. a burglary investigation in vallejo has uncovered a stash of weapons. police released this picture yesterday of the assault rifles, ammunition, large capacity magazines, and body armor found inside a home on
