. 18 years old and armed to the teeth. tonight, we are learning more about the student authorities say opened fire at a colorado high school. >> his intent was evil and his evil intent was to harm multiple individuals. good evening. thank you for joining us for the special post-fight edition of ktvu channel 2news. i'm heather holmes. ken wayne is off tonight. we have new developments to tell you about tonight regarding yesterday's school shooting in centennial, colorado. 18-year-old karl pierson was armed with a shotgun and ammunition, plus a machete and three molotov cocktails, according to the sheriff.

officials believe pierson was targeting a faculty member, possibly a debate coach who had disciplined him. >> he believed based on the fact that he was armed with multiple rounds, armed with a machete, armed with three incendiary devices, his intent was evil and his evil intent was to harm multiple individuals. >> one student now identified as 17-year-old claire davis was shot and critically wounded before pierson took his own life. authorities say there's no reason to believe that she was a target. the sheriff said pierson bought the shotgun legally one week before the shooting. well, today marks one year since the mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. town officials asked reporters to stay away and allow people there to grieve in private. there were no formal events held in the town today. the town asked people to honor those who lost their lives through acts of service and kindness. a few people gathered outside st. paul's church to pray and remember the victims. >> my hope would be that those of us who are marking this

daewoo further our resolve to live in kindness and in generosity and in compassion. >> at the white house today, president obama and the first lady lit 26 candles for the 20 children and six educators who were shot to death. in san francisco, a memorial to honor the lives lost at newtown was held at st. vincent depaul church. people rang bells for each of the 26 victims. the organizers, the group moms demand action, says this was one of about 50 events meant to push for common sense gun control laws across the country. for many bay area residents, today's anniversary brought back memories of other shootings. as john sasaki reports, some say enough hasn't been done to stop the violence. >> reporter: at san francisco's

jean friend recreation center, people said the names of loved ones lost to gun violence. they used the anniversary of sandy hook to honor all victims. >> unfortunately with little kids, we got kids getting killed out here, too. >> reporter: from the center, they marched up the street preaching their word of peace. >> he did not get to see his daughter. he was killed three weeks before she was born. >> reporter: one speaker was herself a victim of a mass shooting. >> he pulled out his semi automatic oozy replica and began firing. >> reporter: mindy finkelstein was hit in the leg when a man shot five people at the los angeles jewish community center in 1999. >> there are a lot of times where my heart is ripped out of my chest, like a year ago. >> reporter: in honor of the lives lost at sandy hook and here in san francisco, these civic and political leaders are calling for change in gun laws, including a banning of gun

shows at the cow palace. >> the counties of san mateo, san francisco, marin, alameda, los angeles have all passed local ordinances banning gun shows on county-owned property. >> reporter: the cow palace is state property. >> it was sad about newtown, the age of the children, and that they were in school. >> reporter: house minority leader nancy pelosi is fighting for background checks for all gun purchases. >> we have the votes in the house of representatives. we just want the speaker to give us a chance to make the vote. >> reporter: the unified message today, keep up the fight to stop gun violence. in san francisco, i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2news. on this anniversary, three separate gun buybacks were held in san francisco, oakland and san jose. ktvu's katie utehs was there and told us what it took for people to hand over their handguns. >> reporter: former marine richmond milton brock lined up a half an hour before san jose's gun buyback even started. he's exchanging a british

infield rifle and .22-caliber semi automatic. >> i have no use for them at this point in my life. anything i can do to help the community and maybe myself, it's a good time. >> reporter: in the parking lot of our lady of guadalupe church, officers and volunteers handed out target gift cards, $200 for an assault rifle, and $100 for handguns and hunting rifles. >> shotgun. >> reporter: within 45 minutes, 150 weapons were dropped off. weapons are brought here, inside where they are then tagged by property specialists with the san jose police department. they are then cataloged. weapons that have historical value will be kept for education and training purposes. the rest will be destroyed. but some say it's not addressing larger gun control issues. >> people that are mentally ill shouldn't have guns, but that's got nothing to do with this. >> reporter: while it's difficult to tie any reductions to a buyback, anedoctally, police and prosecuters say it

makes a difference. >> i can say absolutely that it helps, because every day i file charges of gun theft, gun burglaries from homes with people with guns they don't really need or use. >> reporter: organizers in oakland and san francisco echoed those sentiments, saying it's not the responsible gun owner who is the problem. in san jose, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2news. sheriffs deputies are investigating a shooting in rodeo that killed a 25-year-old man. at about 1:00 this morning, deputies arrived in the 1000 block of viewpoint boulevard where they found the victim with several gunshot wounds. paramedics later pronounced him dead. three people reportedly shot the victim as he sat in a car with another person who was not seriously injured. authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the contra costa county sheriff's office. turning now to the weather, and as promised, it's getting warmer across the bay area. you are looking live at a

beautiful san francisco union square, where right now, it's 54 degrees. mark tamayo is tracking the temperatures. how's it looking right now? >> heather, temperatures have been dropping off quite a bit over the past couple of hours. 30s out there, you'll see on the current map. fairfield at 38 degrees, one of the coolest spots. right now, lots of 40s and a few low 50s. there's a 54 showing up in san francisco. for tonight, fair skies, coastal fog. tomorrow, hazy sunshine, bit of a warmer forecast, and here's the plan for tomorrow for san francisco, on track to reach lower 60s. the extended, a sun/cloud mix and temperatures will be cooling off. overnight lows, chilly sunday morning. patchy fog near the coast and around the bay. coolest locations, subfreezing, napa, santa rosa, san francisco at 44, san jose 36 degrees. forecast highs for tomorrow, a little bit warmer than today in most areas. that means santa rosa at 66. heyward, 64. more 60s, and look at this coming up, a 70 showing up in santa cruz in the forecast high

of 70 about 3:00 tomorrow afternoon. here is a look ahead at the five-day forecast. afternoon highs for monday and tuesday, trending up. we cool off by midweek with a slight chance of a few showers by thursday, but temperatures definitely trending up over the next few days. >> thank you, mark. you can get updates from the ktvu weather team online. just look for them on twitter and facebook. well, our weather is leading to yet another spare the air alert tomorrow. that is the eighth straight. this means lighting up the fireplace or other wood-burning sources is banned unless it's your only source of heat. for the first time violators must pay a $100 fine, and $500 for a second offense. the area air quality officials say stagnant weather patterns are trapping pollution near the ground. as the pattern continues, more alerts are expected. firefighters who work at san francisco international airport are set to get additional training on how to respond to airplane crashes

following the asiana crash. firefighters will receive more training at the dallas/fort worth training center. basic disaster response training has been provided to 80 of the department's firefighters and paramedics. an injured teenage girl was killed after she was run over by two emergency vehicles on the runway following the july 6th crash that also killed two other teens. a bay area tribute tonight to former south african president nelson mandela. those who attended were asked to carry on the fight against injustice. ♪ >> today's event was held at the uc berkeley campus. it was there students gathered back in the '80s. today, people

were encouraged to think about the role they can play in current struggles for justice. >> it is an opportunity to reflect, to find the part of you where mandela's spirit lives, the spirit of integrity, of love, of compassion, the spirit of fighting for what is right. >> the campus vigil was scheduled in time to correspond with sunrise in south africa, where the country is preparing to bury the former president. hundreds gathered to cheer, sing and cry as the hearse carrying nelson mandela's coffin returned the late south african president to his childhood home. mandela will be laid to rest in the village of qunu. some people waited several hours to pay tribute to the antiapartheid hero. a convoy of police and military vehicles accompanied the hearse to the mandela family compound. ktvu will be airing nelson mandela's funeral live on our air this evening. coverage begins tonight at 11:00 and is expected to last
