good morning welcome to mornings on 2. it is sunday december 15th. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. a beautiful moon out there early this morning, if you didn't catch it. let's head over to rosemary and a quick peek of the sunday forecast. most of us waking up with clear skies, we have patchy fog, seeing it over parts of the north perhaps right along the coastline. a cool start to the morning but temperatures not as cold in most areas. we'll have a look at your current conditions for the afternoon. temperatures even warmer than what we had yesterday. we're going above the seasonal average for this time of year. it is another spare the air day. the warm air will continue for the first part of the week and then farther down the road the possibility of maybe a few sprinkles. i'll show you the futurecast model for that. new this morning, south africa bids farewell to nelson mandela. in a touching tribute the country buried its former president, a man known around the world as a leader of social

change. a military guard took his casket into the memorial with the south african flag draped over the coffin. 4500 invited guests attended the funeral. speakers talked about his fight against discrimination and how he preached both toll advance tolerance and understanding. >> you will remain our guiding light illuminating the path as you continue the long journey to build the south africa of your dreams. >> afterred main service, mandela's coffin was taken to a nearby hillside for burial. he died ten days ago at the age of 95. friends called him a brother, a mentor and a leader. >> nobel peace prize winner desmond tutu attend that had funeral after a misunderstanding about his credentials was resolved. celebrities were in attendance including talk show host oprah

winfrey and britain's prince charles. ♪ down by the riverside ♪ >> the bay area also paid tribute to mandela. one of the largest memorials took place at sprow plaza on the uc berkeley campus. it was on that plaza that students gathered to protest against south africa's apartheid regime. they encouraged everyone to continue the push for social injustice. >> mandela's gift to us was to remember to prioritize the dignity of humanity even when doing so and because doing so disrupts the power structure and makes people uncomfortable. >> they're planning a longer and more comprehensive set of events in the spring to honor mandela. organizers of the vigil said they also needed to pay tribute now. >> less than a mile from that peace rally was a violent holdup of two uc students.

allie rasmus is live for us this morning in the city of berkeley with word of another case of students getting robbed on or near the campus. >> reporter: the latest robbery happened saturday morning near willard park. according to the daily cow, two uc berkley students were robbed at gunpoint as they walked to the park to meet friends to watch a meteor shower. students had their cameras, lenses, iphones, a laptop and ipad stolen and the suspects were two men in their 20s who drove away in a brown or rust colored two door car. armed robberies on or near the uc berkeley campus are a problem the police have been dealing with over the past two months they began increasing patrols in october of a a string of armed robberies. uc berkeley police said despite that one-week uptick their overall crime records show that robberies are actually down this year compared to last year. the technology students may be carrying around may be driving

this crime trend. there's within a nearly 70% increase in the robberies targeting berkeley residents with smartphones and iphones in the past year. now we have contacted uc berkeley police it morning to ask them about this most recent robbery and find out if those patrols are continuing because of what happened in october, and we're waiting to hear back from them this morning. live at uc berkeley, allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. police in san fransisco are investigating what led to a deadly shooting in the area of 280. a man did die at the scene. another was transported to the hospital. no arrests have been made. a stray bullet hit a young woman last night in richmond. the bullet was fired from the street into a home on waller avenue near 37th street. there were at least 9 rounds. the victim was struck in the lower back and airlifted to a trauma center. the raiders will not finish above 500 for the 11th 11th straight year but today's home game against kansas city is

sold out. matt mcgloin will start. in last week's game against the jets terrelle pryor came in to lead the third offensive series of the game and that got oakland a field goal. it won't just be about football today. raiders fans will get a chance to give back. fans are being asked to bring new unwrapped toys to today's game. money will be accepted. it is all toys for tots programs and several marines will be on hand to collect those toys starting at 8:00 this morning in raiderville. the west side plaza near the b.a.r.t. entrance and at gates a, bc, and e. the 49ers will see a familiar face when they play the buccaneers in tampa by. shawn goldson successfully appealed a one game suspension for a helmet to helmet hit. he will be in the defensive back field for the buccs. tampa bay lost its first eight games of the season but has won four of the last five. kickoff for 10 a.m. mornings on 2 ends early so we

can bring you nfl sunday on fox. followed by our point after show live in tampa. a couple flights between sfo and jfk and newark and minneapolis have already been canceled this morning thanks to a major snowstorm. it stretches from missouri to massachusetts. more than 12 inches of snow is and wanted to fall in part of the northeast. 300 flights across the nation have been canceled. along with flight disruptions there are also problems on those roadways. with many people throwing holiday parties this weekend the mayor of boston told residents to stay aware. >> the roadways will be snow on them and just asking you just when you celebrate and then celebrate responsibly. >> boston employed 2,000 vehicles dumping 10,000 tons of salt in hopes of making the roads safer. another spare the air day in effect today. lighting fireplaces and wood burning devices is prohibited

unless it's your only source of heat. fines are 100 bucks and they increase to 500 for the second offense. turned out to be a nice day yesterday afternoon as well as in the evening. today, i don't know. i don't have the answer. that's why rosemary's here. we turn to our meteorologist who's got it all for us. >> if you had to guess i'm sure you would say dry. we're going to be dry but we're going to be warmer. i don't know, at least we're getting some pleasant weather, right. before we were dry and really, really cold. now we are going to be unseasonably warm for your afternoon, saw some of that yesterday. today the warmest day of your weekend giving you a live look over the oakland estuary. a little bit of haze out there. it is a spare the air day for most of us. the air is moderate, just a bit unhealthy in the santa clara valley for today. ridge of high pressure strengthening over the area. a few clouds. we could actually see these pull up just a little bit and bring us high clouds for your afternoon. outside of that we've got pretty nice weather in store. we're waking up with mostly

clear skies in most areas. we have patchy fog in and around santa rosa. take it easy if you have an early morning drive. winds are generally light. we have an offshore breeze, and 31 degrees right now in fairfield. 30 in napa. 32 santa rosa, so falling below freezing in some areas. once again. for most of us we're a tad warmer than yesterday morning due to the nice warmup we had in the afternoon yesterday. 45 san fransisco, 39 half-moon bay, 36 in hayward, low 30s for livermore, mid-to upper 30s in antioch. just to the north where again we see some of our coldest temperatures. 2929 sebastopol, 39 in petaluma and upper 30s for calistoga. for the afternoon today, temperatures will edge above yesterday. take a look, 66 expected for santa rosa this afternoon. mid-60s in novato. low 60s for vallejo. low 60s for fairfield. around the bay temperatures in the mid-60s.

low 60s san fransisco, 65 mountain view, mid-60s in san jose, if you're going to be out and about doing some shopping, maybe enjoying the outdoors, 70 degrees this afternoon in santa cruz. low 60s after moon bay. it is going to be a nice day, and if you are thinking about maybe taking a stroll along the coastline, there is a westerly flow that has been building, and that will lead to the possibility of sneaker waves. that to be aware of because those come with little warning, and you'll have excessive run up without much warning as well. the extended forecast here showing you temperatures continuing to warm as we get back to work on monday. temperatures slip a little bit on tuesday. wednesday the bigger drop comes, increasing clouds, and even the slight possibility of a few scattered showers wednesday night into thursday. we're going to line up that futurecast model and show you what i mean coming up. at&t park is getting ready say goodbye to the fight hunger bowl. it will end its 12 year run with its final appearance on

it's a hazy start to the morning in downtown oakland. in downtown at this hour, calm conditions and 42 degrees. >> surveillance video shows that the shooting at a colorado high school lasted 80 seconds. investigators say the teen gunman karl pierson was intent on evils and that he wanted to harm as many people as possible. authorities say pierson rushed into arapahoe high with a machete, three molotov cocktails, a pump action shotgun and ammunition strapped

to his chest. >> the individual fired one random round down a hallway, and then immediately went into the immediate area and space of the female victim and shot the female victim point-blank. >> the sheriff says 17-year-old claire davis remains in critical condition. investigators say they believe she was shot at random. pierson fired five rounds and ignited one molotov cocktail. he was seeking revenge against a debate team teacher. one year later residents in newtown connecticut say they are trying to make sense of the school shooting that devastated so many lives and families there. residents asked for privacy yesterday as they marked the anniversary with a day of quiet and reflection. there was no public memorial, but the bells did toll at the newtown congregational church in honor of the 20 children and six adults who were killed. some of the victim's families encouraged people to remember

their loved ones by performing acts of kindness in their own community. survivors of gun violence held tributes nationwide. gabrielle giffords and her husband remembered the newtown victims by planting a yellow rose bush at a community garden in arizona. the garden was created following the 2011 tucson shooting that killed six people and critically injured gifford. her husband yesterday spoke on her because of. >> for the families of the 26 people who died in newtown the heartache will never go away. we are hopeful that the fight is not over and america will not forget sandy hook. giffords and her husband have launched a campaign for tighter gun control. while she's no longer in congress, she says her crusade against gun violence will carry on. >> newtown remembrances included a sunset vigil in the valley. organizers used 26 cardboard boxes as pillars for each victim with name and age and a

pair of shoes on top. mourners were encouraged to bring flowers for each small pillar. a few dozen people gathered singing songs and reflecting on the lives lost. >> i've been really amazed to be honest. i've been really inspired by, you know, our country just not letting it go, you know, just not something we can forget. >> these shoes actually represent people who -- you know, children that were alive at one point. >> this event was sponsored by organizing for america, a volunteer arm of the white house that held newtown vigils across the country, but the group says the vigils were nonpolitical by focusing only on the victims. >> and a couple of dozen people rang bells during a newtown tribute at st. vincent de paul church in san fransisco. they rang a bell once for each of the 26 victims and rang the belt collectively to show their resolve never to stay silent on

the issue of gun violence. nancy pelosi, the group moms demand action organized the service. there are reports that actor paul walker's younger brother could play a role in the fast and the furious 7. according the daily mail, walker's younger brother has been approached by producers for the film. paul walker was on a break from filming when he died in the fiery car crash two weeks ago. even if cody agrees to be in the movie, there are reportedly a lot of details that need to be worked out about the role he will play. two teens in west sacramento are being called heros after saving a family from a burning house. that fire started yesterday about 3 p.m. out on a back patio. firefighters say a family of five, including two children and a grandmother were inside unaware of the danger. cheyenne and her friend adam lam were riding their bikes when they saw the smoke. >> they're in the house, right, and you know they weren't moving in there so i had opened the door and grabbed the kids and he grabbed the grandma and the mom.

>> i was kind of scared because i didn't want to get too close and not be safe, but also i did want to save lives. >> no one was hurt, but damage to that house was extensive. the red cross is now helping that people. uc cincinnati bar bra is considering giving students an unlicensed vaccine to try to stop the spread of bacterial meningitis. the l. a. times reports the university is working with health expert to decide whether to give students the vaccine. princeton university has already received permission to distribute that drug after eight students got sick with meningitis. four students at uc cincinnati barbara got sick last month. as the influenza season picks up the centers for disease control and prevention is urging people to get a flu shot and says there's plenty of supply. the cdc says last year's flu season was one of the worst. 169 children died and 3,000 people were hospitalized. health official says the vaccine helped prevent millions of people from getting sick.

a warning this morning from the state treasurer who says the teacher retirement system is running out of money fast. the $176 million fund supplies pensions to public school teachers. the treasurer predicted in a speech that if nothing is done, that fund will implode in 30 years. he quoted a budget expert who recommends the state kick in a half billion dollars right now to shore up that system. a barrier literacy program is expanding its reach within contra costa county thanks to local donors it's receiving a $225,000 investment. starting in january, the program will be able to rotate thousands of books among local kindergarten classes and child care programs. a spokesperson for the group says the goal is to help close the achievement gap for low income students by providing them with books. not a lot of precipitation, but somehow the city of san fransisco has turned into a winter wonderland this weekend. the annual snow park is back at the civic center.

the second monkey that iran sent to space has returned to earth. he was sent into the orbit adds part of the program aimed at achieving a manned space flight. he was launched 75 miles into pace and returned within 15 minutes. in january iran sent their

first monkey to space. with insurance deadlines approaching, some people around the bay area are rushing to sign up for affordable care act. the united health care workers west hosted an enrollment event in oakland. dozens showed up to get help. volunteers walked people through that process and certified enrollment counselors input applications into the covered california web site. >> i mean it's people here to help you understand what you don't understand because i know it's big, but it's simple when you come and get an understanding of it. >> some of the people who went to the event say they did so because they were unsuccessful at signing up online. event organizers say if you aren't covered by the beginning of next year, december 3rd is the deadline to apply. a federal analysis shows 15,000 obamacare signup forms did not get sent to insurance companies. the mistake is being blamed on technical problems on healthcare.gov, the department

night, that rain chance actually moves into california. now it doesn't look like a lot and not all the models are agreeing on this, so we are leaving in the slight possibility of a few scattered showers. if we do get those showers it's not a good beefy storm that will bring us the amount of rain that we need but we could see the windshield wipers going come thursday morning. for today temperatures in the mid to upper 60s for our inland areas and around the bay. we'll have mostly sunny skies along the coast as well. patchy fog this morning, some areas in the 30s, concord, napa reporting 30 degrees, widespread 40s around the bay. upper 50s, low 60s for your lunch hour and then again it feels a few degrees warmer than yesterday for the second half of your day. we begin to cool on tuesday with colder weather coming in wednesday, thursday and that chance for a slight shower. back to you. right now a 62-year-old man from russia is attempting to row across the pacific ocean. he left yesterday morning and

>> they told me my daughter would be home on tuesday, and now she's telling me she'll never come home again. >> emotions run high for a bay area family after a young girl is put on life support. why they're blaming understaffing at a bay area hospital. good morning and welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. the family of the teenage girl is sitting at her bedside at oakland's children hospital this morning. a simple procedure has turned into a nightmare situation. ktvu's patty lee has more on why the family says the hospital is to blame. . >> she told me my daughter would be home on tuesday, and now she's telling me she'll never come home again? >> nailah winkfield broke down in front of children's hospital

as she talked about her daughter 13-year-old jay high mcmath. on monday she had her tonsils and adenoids removed but after surgery she didn't stop bleeding from her mouth and nose. one family member who is a surgical nurse says she kept asking for help but few nurses were around. she claims the staff didn't react until she started screaming for help. >> and i was the last one to see jaihai i was the last one to see her and i said somebody help my baby, please, and they came in and they started working on her and the next thing you know her heart -- the man said -- doctor says, oh, no she doesn't have a heart rate no more. >> hospital spokesperson says the icu was and is always fully staffed. she told us she doesn't know why the surgery had this outcome but that the case is being investigated. her family says they feel the hospital is treating them poorly and trying to rush them

out. >> and now she says oh, your family is taking over the visiting room, you guys have too much happening, you guys are invading children's hospital, and i feel like you guys are invading my life. >> again, that was patty lee reporting. a hospital spokesperson says it is not trying to rush the family from the room and that it is the family's decision made with their doctor as to if and when they decide to remove their daughter from life support. two uc berkeley students on their way to watch the stars in the sky are robbed at gunpoint. it is the latest in a series of robberies at or near the campus. ktvu's allie rasmus live in berkeley to tell us about this holdup and what campus police plan to do about it. >> reporter: uc berkeley police started increasing patrols in october after a string of robberies, there were five in a week. since thursday there have been more armed robberies on or near the campus starting with one that happened in front of the

urban outfitters at bancroft way on thursday and then the most recent happened saturday morning off derby street. according to the daily cow, two uc berkeley students were robbed at gunpoint after midnight as they walked to the park to watch a meteor shower. they had their cameras, and ipad and laptop stolen. the suspects were two men in their 20s who drove away in a brown or rust colored two door cars. robberies on uc berkeley properties are down this year compared to last year. city wide they're seeing a more specific crime trend. there's been a nearly 70% increase in robberies targeting residents with smartphones and iphones. students we talked to this morning say they try not to walk around with their personal electronics in plain view. >> i try not to. sometimes you kind of do it unconsciously but especially if it's late at night it's not a good idea. >> absolutely not. that's -- that's something we're warned about during

orientation, so, you know, our laptops our phones we keep that out of sight. >> reporter: we contacted uc berkeley police this morning to ask them about the most recent robberies and to find out if they're continuing patrols. we're waiting to hear back from them, live in berkeley, allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. the u.s. chemical safety board is expect today present a draft report about the august 2012 fire at the chevron refinery in richmond. the board says that fire started because the pipes were old and had deteriorated to less than half the thickness of a dime. 15,000 people went to the hospital complaining of breathing and respiratory problems. tomorrow's report is expected to contain recommendations for changes to the way refineries are regulated in california. bay area roadways are safer followingthis week's avoid the dui campaign. 33 drivers were arrested in santa clara county, six were arrested in san mateo county and another six drivers

arrested in sonoma county. the avoid campaigns launched on friday and will continue to run through new year's day. police are looking at surveillance video to find women behind a scam targeting senior citizens. police received three separate reports from shopping centers. in each case the scammers attempted to trick drivers into believing they hit a car and demanded cash. in two of the cases the women followed their victims as they drove home. when the victims called police, those women disappeared. >> it's a scam that frightens older people like me. >> one suspect is described as a white haired woman between 50 and 75 years old. the other woman is about 40 years old. they may be driving a blue honda suv. tomorrow muni takes one more step towards going green. it will use hybrid buss to replace the old fleet of the express bus line. the old buses have become a staple carrying 1600 passengers

a day. these bio diesel fuel hybrid engines are expected to require less maintenance than the older buss and release less pollution. ac transit is rolling out new routes as the agency tries to recover from its past financial troubles. the changes are not sitting well with the union representing drivers and mechanics. it's arguing that the changes violate the terms of a court ordered 60-day cooling off period between the union and ac transit. the union will have the option of going on strike once that cooling off period ends in a week. negotiations over a new contract are scheduled to resume tomorrow. hundreds bay area burgers will be flocking together to start the 14th annual bird count. they will be assigned a circle to count every bird within a 24 hour period. scientists say the information helps them track bird population trends. that annual event has been sponsored by the national

audubon society since 199 o'. a new travel and leisure poll finds there's a lot o'to love about everyone's favorite city. san fransisco stole the hearts of food lovers winning the top spots for dining and wine embarrass -- bars. they ranked number 1 for looks, smarts, not so hot are barbecue, sports bars, cleanliness and no surprise in affordability. lottery fever is heating up across the bay area as people rush to get those megamillion dollar tickets because the jackpot has gone now to $550 million. the next drawing is set for tuesday night. the lottery officials say the cash prize could surpass last year's record jackpot which was $656 million. nice payday. nice payday. it'd be nice. >> we've got those tickets already. >> we're ready, 7:37 rosemary, i'm ready, 550 million reasons. >> if i don't see you guys

another spare the air day, the eighth in a row. that to be aware of again could be a bit unhealthy, especially for areas along the santa clara valley. air quality is moderate. if you've looked out in the sky in the afternoons lately, you have probably seen the haze for yourself, just a reminder not to burn wood in your fireplace unless you are exempt. temperatures this morning, 32 degrees santa rosa, napa reporting 30 degrees, san fransisco 46, oakland reporting 40 at this hour, concord 30, san jose you're checking in right about 35 for the second half of the afternoon temperatures warming into the low 60s right between 2 and 3:00. san jose topping out about 65 degrees. againings we're typically -- again, we're typically in the mid to upper 50s this time of the year. into the evening hours temperatures will begin to slide. for your outdoors for the evening right about 7:00 or so you'll be cool once again in the 50s. so for the afternoon today you're looking at 65 in oakland, if you're going to see

needed to pay tribute now. less than a mile from sproul plaza was a violent hold upup of two students. allie rasmus joins us live from the campus with word of another case of students getting assaulted and robbed. >> reporter: armed robberies are a problem police have been trying to deal with for the past couple of months and laptops and smartphones that students tend to carry around with them, that appears to be what may be driving this crime trend. on thursday a berkeley resident had his laptop stolen just up the street from where we are. that man was sitting in front of the urban outfitters when he was robbed at gunpoint. early saturday morning, two uc berkeley students had their cameras, lenses, iphones a laptop and ipad stolen when they were held up at gunpoint near willard park. that's about a half mile south. according to the daily cow, those students were on their way to meet friends at the park to watch a meteor shower when two people approached them and demanded they hand over their stuff. police say the suspects were two men that n in their 20s.

uc berkeley student wes talked to say they tried to hide their personal electronics but it's tough during finals weeks when everyone has laptops in their backpacks. >> everybody has their stuff with them. they're always walking back and forth. that's something you really have to be alert and even then. >> i generally walk around with my headphones around my neck but everything else is hidden in my backpack. >> there's been a 70% includes in robberies targeting residents with smartphones and iphones in the past year. uc berkeley police say despite the perception in that specific crime trend, overall records show robberies on uc berkeley property are down compared to last year. this morning we're waiting to hear back from uc berkeley police about these most recent robberies and whether police continue to keep up the patrols they stepped up back in october. live at uc berkeley allie rasmus ktvu. police are investigating a shooting that put a 23-year-old man in the hospital.

it happened sometime around 9:00 last night at euclid avenue and bell street. shortly after they responded to the activity they received a call about a gunshot victim at the hospital. the man is in stable condition and is expected to survive. anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the police department. and a stray bullet hit a young woman last night in richmond. the bullet was fire department from the street into a home on waller avenue near 37th 37th street. shot responder picked up at least nine rounds being fired. the victim was struck in the lower back and airlift today a trauma center. we just got off the phone with sfo and the airport is reporting that three flights to the new york area have been canceled this morning. that storm is stretching more than a thousand miles from missouri to massachusetts and more than 12 inches of snow is expected to fall in part of the northeast. some 300 flights across the nation have been canceled today and along with those flight disruptions are problems on the roadways. many people throwing holiday

on this surprising amount of time the whole incident took and what the suspect was armed with. >> the arapahoe county sheriff says friday's ordeal at a colorado high school took just a minute and 20 seconds. in that time he says karl pierson walked into the school, fired several shots including one at a female student before killing himself. the sheriff said the 18-year- old entered the school carrying a shotgun, multiple rounds of ammunition, a machete and three molotov cocktails in his backpack. he made his way to the school's library, ignited one of the homemade bombs and then turned the gun on himself as the school's resource officer approached. >> the response from the school resource officer, the response from the unarmed school security officer was absolutely critical to the fact that we did not have additional injury and or death in this particular matter. >> the female student claire davis was sitting with a friend when pierson stormed in and shot her at point-blank range.

the 17-year-old is in critical condition at a local hospital. >> i believe claire davis was -- is an innocent young lady. she is an innocent victim, and i believe that she probably was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> the sheriff says pierson purchased the shotgun and ammunition legally. >> it is our strong belief that he came to this school with that weapon and with multiple rounds and his intention was to utilize those multiple rounds to cause harm to a large number of individuals. >> while investigators are still trying to figure out what triggered pierson, robinson says one thing is clear. >> he is someone who victimized an innocent young lady by an act of evil, and in my opinion deserves no notoriety, and certainly no celebrity. >> that was martha shade reporting. one year later residents in newtown connecticut say they are still trying to make sense of the school shooting that devastated so many lives and families there. residents asked for privacy

yesterday as they marked the anniversary with a day of quiet and reflection. there was no public remother but the bells did toll at the newtown congressional church in honor of the 20 children and six adults who were killed. some of the victims families encouraged people to remember their loved ones by performing acts of kindness in their own communities. survivors of gun violence held tributes nationwide. gabrielle giffords and her husband remembered the newtown victims by planting a yellow rose bush at a community garden in arizona. the garden was created following the 2011 tucson shooting that killed six people and critically injured giffords. here in the bay area, a sunset vigil in mill valley. organizers used 26 cardboard boxes as pillars for each victim with their name and age, plus a pair of shoes on top of them. mourners were encouraged to bring flowers for each small pillar. a few dozen people gathered singing songs and reflecting on the lives lost. i've been really amazed to

service the was held there for his family and close friends. they say walker was cremated in the hollywood hills. a second memorial service is being planned for other members of hollywood and walker's former costars. the cause of the crash that killed him is under investigation. there are reports that actor paul walker's younger brother could fill in for the young star in the fast and furious 7. the daily mail reports that 25-year-old cody walker has been approached by producers for the latest film. if cody agrees to be in the movie, however, there are apparently a lot of details that need to be worked out surrounding his role. two teens in west sacramento are being called heros after saving a family from a burning house. that fire started yesterday at about 3 p.m. out on the back pad path owe. a family of five including two children and a grandmother were inside unaware of the danger. cheyenne debois and her friend adam lam were riding their bikes.

another robbery near the uc berkeley campus. the items being targeted and the actions police are taking. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. two uc berkeley students robbed at gunpoint blocks from campus. it's the latest case of students getting robbed. allie rasmus live for us this morning in the city of berkeley with a plan of action for police. >> it is finals week on the uc berkeley campus. a lot of students are walking around with their lab tops in their backpack and personal electronics may be driving this crime trend. on thursday there was a berkeley resident who had his laptop stolen at gunpoint in front of the urban outfitters on bancroft way. that happened thursday during

the overnight hours. and early saturday morning two uc berkeley students had their laptops along with their cameras, lenses and iphones and an ipad stolen when they were held up at gunpoint near willard park. willard park's a half mile south of the campus near college avenue. the students were on their way to meet friends at the park to watch a meteor shower when two people approached them and demanded they hand over their stuff. police say the suspects were two men in their 20s who drove away in a brown or rust colored two-door car. the uc berkeley students we talked to this morning say they tried to hide their personal electronics when they're walking around near campus. >> sometimes you kind of do it unconsciously but especially if it's late at night it's not a good idea. >> i generally walk around with my headphones around my neck. everything else is like hidden in my backpack. >> everybody's out and about like studying and cafes and libraries and stuff. i feel like it's a trend. >> now back in october, uc berkeley police announced they'd be stepping up patrols

on campus and near the campus to deal with that trend. that announcement came after a string of armed robberies. uc berkeley police say despite that perception their crime records show that overall robberies on the uc berkeley property are down this year compared to last year. we're still waiting to hear back this morning from uc berkeley police and also get more information about the most recent robberies that have happened. live at uc berkeley, allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. police in san fransisco are investigating what led to a deadly the shooing overnight. it happened at 11:00 near interstate 280. one man died at the scene. another was taken to the hospital. no word on that victim's condition and no arrests have been made. the family of the teenage girl is sitting at her bedside at oakland's children's hospital this morning. they say a simple procedure has turned into a nightmare for their family. ktvu's patty lee has more on why the family says the

hospital is to blame. >> she told me my daughter would be home on tuesday and now you're telling me she'll never come home again. >> nailah winkfield broke down as she talked about her daughter 13-year-old jahi mcmath. after surgery she didn't stop bleeding from her mouth and nose. one family member says she kept asking for help but few nurses were around. she claims the staff didn't react until she started screaming for help. >> i was the last one to see jahi. i was the last one to see her, and i said somebody help my baby, please. help jahi and they came in and they started working on her and the next thing you know her heart, the man said -- doctor says, oh, no she doesn't have a heart rate no more. >> hospital spokesperson says the icu was and is always fully staffed. she told us she doesn't know

through new year's. tomorrow muni takes one more step towards going green. it will use hybrid buses to replace the old fleet. the old buses have become a staple for muni carrying 1600 passengers a day. the bio diesel fuel hybrid new jerseys are expected to require less maintenance and release less pollution. ac transit is rolling out new routes and extending hours as the agency tries to recover from its past financial troubles. the changes are not sitting well with the union representing drivers. it's arguing that the changes violate the terms of a court ordered 60-day cooling off period between the union and ac transit. the union will have the option of going on strike once that cooling off period ends in a week. negotiations over a new contract are scheduled to resume tomorrow. a new travel and leisure poll finds there's a lot to love about everyone's favorite city, san fransisco stole the hearts of food lovers winning

university is working with health experts to decide whether or not to give the students the vaccine. princeton university has received permission to distribute the drug after eight students got sick with meningitis. four students at uc cincinnati barbara got sick with meningitis last month. as the influenza season begins to pick up, the centers for disease control and prevention urging people to get a flu shot and it says there's plenty of supply. the cdc said last year's few flu season was one of the worst. 169 children died and more than 3,000 people were hospitalized. health officials say that the vaccine helps prevent millions of people from getting sick. a warning this morning from the state treasurer who says the teacher retirement system is running out of money fast. the $176 billion fund supplies pensions to public school teachers and last week the treasurer predicted in his speech that if nothing is done the fund will implode in 30 years. he quoted a budget expert who recommends the state kick in a half billion dollars right now to shore up the system.
