we are live at san jose international airport where thousands of gallons of water flooded one of the terminals here. we will tell you the impact of travelers and what you need to know if you are coming to the airport. public meeting tonight over a contract for vallejo police officers and it comes just as the community reacts to another violent weekend. and talks are set to resume today in the ac transit labor dispute. the reason workers could possibly go on strike at the end of the week. good morning. we are entering into a very busy travel time as we get closer to christmas. but we are looking live at the san jose airport this morning. terminal a had to be evacuated because of a hot water line burst this morning. ktvu janine de la vega is out there at the airport.

talking about what is happening to all of those passengers and the extent of the damage there. we will check in with her in a little bit. thank you for joining us on this monday morning december 16th i'm pam cook. >> and good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. steve, the weather behaving for you? a little bit. we are watching for possible record highs. a lot of high clouds. the lows are up, up, up. santa cruz has the best shot here. the record is 74 in 1923. the rest would be close but not records. gilroy 72. it would be three off. oakland 67 not close. livermore 66. san jose 68. the record is 70. 30s to 40s, to 40s. its really mild for some. i know 30s are still cold. higher clouds associated with a weak system. mostly sunny. few high clouds nice to mild to warm. in fact, especially from santa cruz to monterey. afternoon highs 60s and 70s. a lot of 60s here but there will be a couple soft 70 east

side. steve, good morning. we are still looking at traffic that is doing pretty well but we are getting some slow traffic now. this a look at the east shore freeway on 80 westbound and eastbound here. near university avenue. a slightly different view than what we are used to seeing but the traffic will be a little slow in some areas as you drive to here. when you get to the berkeley area its not all that bad. no major problems by the way if you are at the bay bridge toll plaza but the metering lights are on and the traffic is moving along nicely. its about an eight to ten minute delay. san mateo bridge traffic looks good. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. we are following developing news out of san jose international airport where terminal a had to be evacuated. janine de la vega is there at the airport with more on the effect on passengers this morning. janine. >> reporter: pam, if you arrive here at terminal a, you can expect to see police cars and officers here. they are making sure that

passengers don't step in any of the standing watt tear is still dripping of the ceiling here. if you are a passenger, you can still check in here at terminal a but then you have to exit terminal a as you see these people are doing. and then you have to go to security screening that is in terminal b or the international terminal. now here's what it looks like inside the airport. now about 2:15 this morning we are told a hot water line broke in the rooftop of the sky bridge of terminal a that takes travelers from the security screening to the parking garage and baggage claim area. gallons of water came cascading down the escalators. it impacted security and bag age claim. there were not too many people there in the time. emergency crews worked to secure the area and get the water turned off. police sergeant described what it all looks like. >> we had water cascading down the stairwell. we had water cascading down the

escalators and spreading out through the ground level on both the baggage claim site and all the way into the check point site. there was water probably an inch thick. >> reporter: again passengers can still check in at terminal a but they can walk or then take the shuttle buss to terminal b and check their bags there and go through security screening there. there is also security screen agent the international terminal but its limited. they say to get here early because this could take hours to clean up. its unknown what caused the water line to break. that will be investigated later. right now the airport is concerned making sure that passengers aren't going to be impacted. i just checked the board and so far just one flight has been delayed. but things can change. we will continue to monitor it. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. more details on the flooding at the airport. the airlines in terminal a that are being impacted include

american, delta, jet blue, united, u.s. airways, virgin american, and hawaiian. janine just mentioned the good news is the flights seem to be moving okay. for the latest on the conditions at the airport you can like us on facebook war find us on twitter and there you will get updates. police are investigating a series of shootings that injured three people in just about 24 hours. now people in the community are getting involved. last night ha vigil was held to pray for the victims of the 26 homicides that happened this year. people are vowing to reclaim their streets. help with police investigations, and put a stop to crime. >> you can't necessarily feel too numb when people are getting killed all the time because it hurts. it hurts when your friends hurt. >> reporter: police say they have no suspects in the most recent shootings and are asking anyone with information to come forward. the police department acknowledges it is severely

under staffed for vallejo's population and crime rate. now that issue will be discussed tonight at a special city council meeting in vallejo. the council will also discuss a proposed police contract. that contract requires retired and active police officers to pay a larger portion of their health benefits. the vallejo police officers association took out a newspaper ad this weekend urging people to attends the meeting and oppose this contract. that meeting begins at 7:00 with the city council chambers on santa clara street. students return to a san rafael elementary school today after power was knocked out last week when a mini van crashed into the school. this happened at laurel dale elementary school thursday night. now the investigation goes on into the cause of the crash. school was canceled friday. according to the school's website, the repairs are expected to be finished in time for classes this morning. magnitude 2.8 earthquake shook parts of sonoma county

last night. this happened just before 10:00 last night. about two miles southeast of the geysers. the quake was more than a mile deep. so far there is no word on any injuries of damage. if you are planning a trip to the post office today, allow a lot of time. brian flores is joining us from san jose. >> reporter: expect the post office to be very busy today. one person right over here is coming over to drop off his or her cards this morning. it will be very busy at the post office as they consider it one of the busiest mailing days -- [ inaudible ] >> all right we lost brian unfortunately. >> yeah but we can see inside they are working. >> yeah the busiest mailing

down. we will check in with brian in a little bit. time is 6:07. we will get back to brian in a moment. meantime negotiations resume on a new ac transit contract. this is ac transit rolls out new routes and extends its houses. they say it violates the court order. the union may possibly go on strike when that cooling off period ends in a week. in just two weeks fares on bart will go up. starting january 1st the average bart fare will go up 19 cents more per ride. bart says the fare hike will insure reliable and safe train services in the years ahead. however mom bart riders are still worried about the possibility of another bart strike as the labor dispute drags on. this week bart management and unions will meet on the dispute the family leave contract clause in the tentative agreement. muni takes another step

toward going green. hybrid buses replace the old fleet on the nx judah express bus line. the old buss have been a staple for muni. they carried 1600 passengers a day. easing the burden on the n- judah. the busiest light rail line. they are expected to need less maintenance and create less pollution. praise for the president this morning by san francisco mayor ed lee by a summertime fire in yosemite. it has now been declared a disaster. mayor lee also thanks governor brown who wrote am letter to the president after fema denied last months request. berkeley's tuolumne family camp was among the many damaged. the city of san francisco will pay the coast guard nearly

$1 million. now when the world war ii era boat sank it leaked about 100 gallons fuel into the bay. time 16:09. the city of okay land getting is corporate heavy hitters. the 500 million waterfront ballpark is being proposed by a team that is led by clorox chairman. and there are plans to build a new stadium and coliseum city at the current home of the oakland a's. however the owners of the a's have said the talks with oakland city officials have gone nowhere. they plan to move the team south to san jose. mega millions is approaching a record breaking mark. we will tell you the latest road on the big jackpot. also new information about

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. the time is 6:13. if you're planning to head to the beach today. steve paulson says it will be pretty nice. the national weather service says you need to watch out for sneaker waves. a large westerly swell is producing large waves and strong rip currents. its in effect and will remain in effect through this afternoon. time 6:14. a girl is fighting for her life. claire davis was shot in the head at point-blank range on friday. she is in a coma. police say she was critically wounded while the teenage gunman searched for the intended sicktivity of the -- victim of the attack. the school's debate team coach. >> when carl came back he was

pretty angry. he felt like the suspension had rounded his chances. he killed himself after opening fire on the school campus. all through the weekend family members and friends gathered at that high school campus in sen tenial, colorado. they have been lighting candles and praying for claire davis as she struggled to survive that terrifying attack. meantime nelson mandela is now buried in the village in south africa. a military procession carried nelson mandela's casket. world leaders, celebrities, and thousands of south african's went to that remote site. one of nelson mandela's oldest friends gave a very moving tribute. >> farewell my dear brother, my

mentor, my leader. my life has a void and i don't know who to turn to. >> the funeral for nelson mandela capped a ten-day mourning period in south africa. the budget bill that passed in the u.s. house of representatives is expected to face more opposition in the senate. the bipartisan spending plan was approved last week in the house by a wide margin but in the senate democrats are still trying to come up with a 60 votes they need to put the budget bill up to a vote. most republican senators are expected to vote against the bill. time is 6:16. northern california fishermen will begin harvesting crab after a stoppage over prices kept the boats at the docks for almost two weeks. many are dropping their pots after reaching a deal with wholesalers for $265 a pound. the crab season was scheduled to open back on december 1st but fishermen wanted $3 instead

of the $2.50 per pound they were offered. hundreds of bay area bird lovers joined the christmas bird count. many say so far it has been a breeze. yesterday the count organizers say there were hardly any birds to count in oakland. once they receive the final bird count results, the information will be sent to scientists to be studied. san francisco's bird count then will take place december 27th. 6:17 is the time. back over to sal keeping on eye on traffic. >> good morning to you pam and dave. we are looking at traffic that is getting much busier. this is highway 24. its moderate. the deprive time between wall -- the drive time is about 11 minutes which is normal. but we were hoping it will be a little lighter. and it will be as we get closer to christmas but right now traffic is still about the same. looking at the toll plaza that is about a 15-20 minute delay before you make it on to the

for the weather. >> pamela. >> yes how is it? >> dave. it is much warmer than it has been. a lot of high clouds. the big news will be the warmer temps. especially toward santa cruz. if you haven't had your coffee yet you are like what? san jose will be close from 62 yesterday to 68 today. they would not be a record they need to get to 70. oakland will not set a record it will be 66. expect for the high clouds it will be another sunny day. high clouds nice to mild to warm. a little cool off to the east. this offshore breeze does not help some. especially off toward fairfield and vacaville. here is sal. steve, good morning. we are still seeing some slow traffic and i kind of thought that today we might have a slightly better day.

but everyone is back at it. and the morning commute on 80 westbound is still busy. this is 80 westbound near university. you can see the traffic is still moving along. its busy but its not stop and go. i would say you will be in a lot of company. when you get to the bay bridge f is a different story. you are slowing down there for a 15-20 minute delay before you make it on to the bridge. we have been looking at the south bay commute and the traffic continues to move along pretty well on northbound 101 and 280. we don't have a lot of slow traffic just yet in san jose. let's go back to the desk. we are following that developing news out of san jose international airport where terminal a has been evacuate -- evacuated. janine de la vega is there. she has been there all morning. janine. >> reporter: i just checked the board and so far there has just been one delay on delta airlines. there is one canceled flight on

virgin but its unclear if it was due to the water main break that occurred here. it was chaotic earlier. its more controlled now. there are officers in here making sure passengers don't step in the water. here's what it looked like inside the airport. at 2:15 this morning a hot water line broke which takes travelers from the security screening to the parking garage and baggage claim area. couple thousands of gallons of water came cascading down the escalators and into the security area. there were not too many people there at the time because the first flights don't take off until 6:30 in the morning. emergency crews work to secure the area and get the water turned off. passengers can still check in at terminal a but if they have bags to check, they must check them at terminal b and go through security screening over there. >> we have to check our bags

and walk back over to a. >> are you worried about your flight? >> still plenty of time. >> reporter: travel travelers can either walk or take shuttle buss to terminal b. now if passengers do not have bags to check, they can go through screening at the international terminal but it is limited. airport officials say to get here early, if you are traveling out of terminal a because this could take hours to clean up. its unknown what caused the water line to break and that will be investigated later. now the airport is just concerned with making sure that this doesn't impact travelers. again, there is still a lot of cleanup to do. again i just poked any head in there and still a lot of water on the ground. its still dripping. there are ceiling tiles on the ground and a broken security camera. so still a lot of cleanup. reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:34. a 19-year-old woman from richmond recovering after a

stray bullet 94 her as she watched tv friday night. it happened just after 6:30 on waller avenue in richmond. police say nine shots were fired. the bullets went through the victim's arm and her lower back. the victim's sister common did not want to be on camera says her sister was with her stepfather at the time whinniest happened. >> it could have been way worse but i'm thankful that she is talking and breathing and she is alert. >> reporter: police say they are not sure what prompted the shootings. they are still out there looking for clues and suspects. the victim's sister says this was a senseless crime and her family no longer feels safe in their neighborhood. a 13-year-old oakland girl still on life support this morning in tragic medical case. she was declared brain dead last thursday. just a couple days after she went into oakland's children's hospital to have tonsil surgery. the girl's family accuses the hospital of inadequate care

that led to her having a heart attack after the procedure. the hospital promises a full investigation. tomorrow marin county supervisors will consider a plan to improve pedestrian safety. the meeting comes a week after a 79-year-old man was hilt by -- hit by a van. county supervisors are due to talk about a sweeping safety plan for that area which has been the scene of many other accidents. fremont police are warning people about two men posing as contractors to gain access to people's homes. the latest incident was reported last tuesday at a home on lan constitute. the homeowner says the two men told him they were repairing a neighbor's fence and they needed access to the backyard. they let them into the yard leaving his door unlocked and later he discovered cash and jewelry missing. the suspects are described as middle eastern between the ages of 25 and 30.

with brian's story at the u.s. postal service. time is 6:37. later today federal investigators are due to release a draft report about last year's fire at the chevron refinery in richmond. the chemical safety board is expected to lay out new recommendations for regulating california refineries. earlier report blamed the richmond fire on old pipes that were not well maintained. 15,000 people in the area had to go to hospitals. they claimed about respiratory problems related to that refinery fire. state assemblyman tom would be mayor ed lee's strongest challenger. the san francisco chronicle is reporting the results of a new poll that shows a.m. january know trailing lee. a.m. january know has not said whether he will have the mayor's race.

i am congressman eric swalwell. >> its all part of what he calls his in your shoes program. every month he does a different job. so far he has ban paramedic, head start teacher, carpenter, and assembly line worker. a couple hours people who are being evicted from two buildings in san francisco they will be protesting at the workplace of one of the owners. the owners want to convert the buildings to office space. nice morning at 8:30 the tenants and supporters will protest outside the caldwell banker residential brokerage office. the mega millions lottery game would set a new record. no one has won the top prize since october 1st. so tomorrow's jackpot is expected to be at least $550

air quality managers say the weather pattern is trapping pollution close to the ground. you are not supposed to burn wood or any solid fuel indoors or outdoors. however you are allowed to have a fire if that is the only way you can stay warm. police in vallejo are trying to stop a recent surge in violence but the city council is considering a pay cut for police officers in the city as well. alex savidge is joining us with a preview of a very important meeting set for tonight. >> reporter: good morning. during that special meeting tonight the city council will desaid a possible cut to both pay and benefits for current and retired officers here in this city. the vallejo police union meantime is is pushing back though. they say this move would be devastating for this department. an already under staffed department by driving out qualified officers. the union took out a full page ad urging them to -- and voice opposition to propose new contract.

it would be the first post bankruptcy contract for vallejo officers and force them to pay 25% more for health care and propose a 5% pay cut. this comes after they grapple with a recent surge. homicide count here stands at 26 so far this year. that includes three deadly officer involved shootings. >> bang bang. i knew him. bang bang i went to school with her. >> reporter: last night those angry about the recent violence came together for a vigil. more than 100 people gathered at the vallejo ferry terminal. they held candles there and offered prayers for the victims and talked about solutions to stop the killings. many say along with more officers the city needs to offer more options for young people to keep them off the streets. neighbors pledged to get more involved.

>> we have to take initiative. to take back our communities from violence. >> reporter: right now there are just 78 officers on staff and that is about half as many as this department had back in 2006. and that includes only six detectives to handle a growing case load in terms of homicides here in this city. the gun violence meantime continued this past weekend. three people were shot during just the 24 hour period. none of them though -- all of them i should say, are expected to survive their injuries. police are hoping they can find witnesses who are willing to cooperate with the investigations. live in valy hoe -- live near vallejo alex savidge. that fire started around 9:30 sunday morning. fire crews say the flames were under control shortly after 10:00 a.m.. but at least 12 units were

completely destroyed. no injuries are reported and that cause of the fire surround investigation. a new report on the boston marathon bombing is disputing some earlier claims made by federal investigators. investigators say tom ralline -- tamerlan tsarnaev was recruited and trained by islamic rivals. tamerlan and his brother were more likely driven by personal failures and alienation from society. tamerlan thought he was hearing voices in his head. >> the man that he went to mosque with would talk to him about how he believes his mind is being controlled by some other entity. >> reporter: boston globe report says both of tamerlan's parents have been treated for mental problems. tamerlan was killed in a shootout after the marathon bombings. his brother is still being held in confinement. a 12-year-old boy from martinez

tomorrow is the start of a two- day fed policy meeting that may be bernanke's last. wall street watching closely for that meeting. there are signs shoppers are permanently changing how they spend their holiday budget. the national retail federation says sales dropped almost 3% during the long thanksgiving holiday weekend. many consumers are not seeing as much in a way of a pay hike despite an improving economy and many have made a habit of waiting for those deep discounts. more snow expected in the northeast and midwest today and tomorrow. now its expected to be a smaller storm. maybe a couple of inches of new snow. but the forecasters say the deep freeze will continue

through the north east. back here at home several oakland raiders will be at the south land mall in hayward tonight. they will continue a special holiday toy drive that began outside the oakland coliseum before yesterday's game with the chiefs. the players are signing autographs in exchange for donated toys. the u.s. marines are helping out in this toys for tots donation drive. >> what we do is collect all of these toys and hand them out to charities and churn in need. >> and fans are encouraged to bring new unwrapped toys to the south land mall tonight. cash donations are also being accepted as well. san francisco firefighters toy program will get about 1,000 toys today. staff from st. mary's medical center will drop off the toys later this morning. the program is the city's largest of its kind and the oldest in the nation. it started in 1949 with a couple of firefighters that repaired broken toys for
