the bay area has a big winner tonight. a lottery ticket matches the six numbers in tonight's million dollars jackpot. good evening i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. tonight's mega million jackpot is worth $636 million. the second highest. there's late word of multiple winning tickets. here is a look at the numbers, they are eight, 14, 17, 20, 39 and the mega number is seven. the california lottery confirms

one winning ticket was sold in san jose in just the past 30 minutes we've received conformation of winning tickets in georgia and ohio. we do know where the ticket was sold, it's called jenny's. we had a crew that just arrived at jenny's and we'll have a live report a little later in this newscast. now to continuing coverage of the smoky haze seen throughout the bay area. you could barely see the san francisco skyline. the bay area air quality district declared another spare the air day for tomorrow.

that means no unnecessary wood burning allowed. a wildfire at big suhr, on the right today's fire at a metal recycling plant on the peninsula. bill martin has been tracking the haze. >> the haze is going to stay in the south bay and in and around the bay area. here's how it looked outside today. what you're looking is the satellite from where the slope started at. >> we're going to interrupt bill, we're having a little problem with his audio. we apologize for that. the thick smoke in the

south prompted officials to ask residents to stay indoors. >> reporter: many people would see the haze from the suhr fire and the spare the air day. no matter how much people tried to hide out they could not escape it. >> we can smell chemicals and the smoke is very heavy. >> it smells like it could be toxic. it's definitely like an electrical fire or something that we shouldn't be breathing. >> reporter: distance didn't seem to matter much. on the south at of santa clara county. >> the smoke and the smells they drift and drift southerly. they tend to finish here in morgan hill. >> reporter: st. katherine school moved pe classes, recess and lunch indoors and inside closed vents. >> it was a chemical smell. burning tires perhaps and it just didn't smell good.

lots of icks from the kids. >> i live not north county and the air up there smelled fine. and i came to work and i can feel it in my eyes and in any nose. >> reporter: if you can smell it, it's still there. in gilroy, robert handa. firefighters in monterey county say they're making progress on the fire in big suhr. tonight the fire is 20% contained. it covers about 770 acres or a little more than one square mile. since it started on sunday night 22 structures have burned including at least 14 homes. firefighters say the fire is

burning in steep terrain and is consuming shrubs and timber. now to the peninsula where health officials say we won't know until next week what kind of compounds were released into the air at on hour's long plant fire they heard explosions. it took firefighters nearly nine hours to get that fire under control. smoke from the fire drifted south prompting a shelter in place. this is the fourth fire at sims in the past six years and the second in a little more than a month. we have bill's audio problem worked out. we want to go back to him for a check of weather and the smoke conditions. >> the smoke came from this fire down around big suhr. let's take a look and we'll track its path.

the smoke drifted south. as it did it brought with it particulates. as the smoke moves up you can see getting stuck in the santa clara valley there. that smoke is at a higher level but it's going to settle into the area as this inversion sets up tonight. that's why there's an air quality alert for tomorrow. as we go into the evening hues and tomorrow the air quality in the santa clara valley not good at all. it's going to be the worse around san jose. just hazy conditions. when i come back i'm going to talk about that wind that could clear all this up. >> thank you, bill. back now to our breaking news. the california lottery confirms one winning ticket was sold in san jose. christien kafton is live right now outside a gift store where someone beat some very long odds. >> very long odds indeed. 152million to be exact.

collision with a truck. right now police are trying to determine if there is a need for criminal charges or if this was just a horrible accident. ktvu's heather holmes live at fifth and market. she tells us it appears here heather that the truck driver never everyone knew he had hit someone. >> that is what police are saying upon their initial investigation. i want to tell you that just within the last few minutes the coroner arrived here at this intersection. it is really apparent frank from what we've seen here that this bike was literally ripped apart. i've seen the bike's seat as well as one of its wheals. the driver -- as well as one of its wheels. a big rig struck a woman as the truck turned on to fifth street tonight. >> i think the trailer may have

caught the victim underneath. and drug her for a little distance. >> reporter: from what witnesses told police it appear it is driver of the big rig never knew he hit the bicyclists. continues a half mile down the road, as part of the bicycle wedged -- with part of the bike wedged in the back of the truck. a witness heard the scraping of metal. that's when he saw it was a bicycle and the victim was stuck under the truck. he called 911. police stopped him with the crumpled truck lodged underneath. >> sometimes when the truck makes that turn. they can get really close to the curb. she may have got caught underneath there because she may have been on the curb or very close. >> do we think the driver of the big rig knew that he hit a bicyclists. >> it's unknown at this time. but sometime with those big

riggs sometimes it's hard to tell. >> reporter: stunned bike riders who road by the scene shook their heads. shocked that someone from their bicycling community died today. especially since the bicyclists took so many precautions. she was wearing a helmet, had reflectors on her bike. right now investigators are out here trying to find out what happened when the bicyclists was hit. terrifying moments at a medical center in reno when a gunman opened fire killing one person and critically injuring two others before turning the gun on himself. officials calls a shelter in place shortly after the shooting happened this afternoon. it happened on the campus of the regional center.

10 inmates were hurt. four had to be taken to the hospital. arson investigators are among those looking into the blast. >> reporter: this inmate along with three others had to be taken to valley medical and eden hospital after an exploded at the alameda county jail before noon. the force blew the oven door which weighs several hundred pounds into the kitchen. >> the first crews found that there had been a natural gas explosion in one of the ovens. and we declared what we call a multiple casualty incident mci. >> reporter: the kitchen was on lock down until about 6:00 tonight. >> we needed a lot of staff to go down to the kitchen and respond to this energy. >> reporter: sergeant j.d. nelson briefed crews. but with the critical incident he does not know what led to the incident. >> we have our bomb squad here because this is considered an explosion. >> they usually start cooking

around 7:00. from 7:00 to 12:30 they bake. they bake biscuits, cakes, corn bread back there. >> reporter: katrina green works for air mark. a company contracted to make inmate meals. she said the kitchen had about 50 people in there. workers, deputies and aramark. >> the supervisor was lucky. she usually stands in front of the oven that explodes. i don't know where she was when it happened but she usually stands right there. >> reporter: the four inmates that required care were returned to santa rita where they can now answer questions from investigators. patti lee. >> the santa rita jail is the third largest in california. it houses about 4,000 inmates on a 113-acre campus. the jail says its cook, chill food service operation prepares

12,000 meals a day. six american soldiers died in afghanistan but the exact circumstances are still not clear. the soldiers were on board an army black hawk helicopter. the pentagon said it made a hard landing. the americans then come under fire from militants. one person on board did survive but is injured. the six deaths are the single largest troop loss in about six months. nasa is ordering at least two space walks to make repairs at the international station. a cooling system failed last week. now two american astronauts will need to replace a pump with a bad valve. the exact timing of the space walk is expected tomorrow. nasa says three may be needed. the space station has two cooling systems but nasa doesn't want to take any chances on another failure. clouds streaming in over the area. everyone a little bit of precipitation showing up down

police in vallejo are looking for a man who robbed the mcdonalds overnight and forced the employees to strip off their clothes and get into the refrigerator. ben pritchett explains the unusual way he got into the restaurant. >> reporter: the driver through window is pretty small. but just enough for the 150- pound gun wielding robber to fit through. police have video of the heist. >> they were ordered into the freezer and the employees concerned for their own life and safety decided to stay put until they felt it was all right. >> reporter: a workers last night remained traumatized.

>> the employees are there so friendly and they are just good people. >> reporter: vallejo has seen a rash of violent crime in the past week including multiple homicides that add to the workload of an already taxed police department. >> we cannot solve all these crimes alone so we're going to ask the public for their help. >> reporter: as for the mcdonalds robber climbing through a drive thru window. police say it's pretty unique, everyone for rough times. police expect the video to be released in an effort to get the public's help. in vallejo, ken pritchett, ktvu news. a federal grand jury indicted the man accused of the deadly shooting rampage at los angeles international airport. 23 paul ciancia is charged with attempted murder.

ciancia went to l.a.x. intend on killing tsa agents and committing an act of terrorism. one tsa agent was killed and two others were wounded. facebook is generating ads. the ads will play automatically but without any sound. clicking the ad though will then trigger the audio. ad experts say they will probably be expensive. wall street posted small losses today. the dow dropped nine points, the nasdaq was off five. also today the federal reserve began its two day meeting and tomorrow the fed is expected to make a decision on whether or not to pull back its federal stimulus program. most americans do not expect wall street will repeat this year's strong performance in 2014. the poll found only 14% say the market will rise.

when people think of police and electric shocks they're thinking of tasers. not automatic defibrillators. but this collection drive is hoping to equip officers with anyone who may need the device. . officers outside of walgreens asked for a donation to buy defibrillators. >> there wasn't enough money in the city to pay outright for these devices in the police car. and the nonprofit is able to receive charitable donations so we can manage this program. >> reporter: aeds have become common sights in businesses and airports. >> i think if it's going to save a life yeah it's necessary. >> i never reallily thought of police officers as first responders as far as health care goes. that would be my only thing.

online at sf safe. we've put up a link on ktvu come. reporting live in san francisco jana katsuyama ktvu channel 2 news. the oakland police department is getting dozens of new patrol cars with a whole new look. opd is getting 82 of the new ford police intercepter suvs. they are larger than the cruisers currently in use but the department says they get better gas mileage and that will cut their fuel bills. oakland plans to acquire 162 vehicles. all part of a $12 million lease purchase program. two men have been charged with obstructing santa rosa police officers during protests over the killing of andy lopez. the 13-year-old was fatally shot in october after a sheriff deputy says he believed the teen was carrying a real ak47. it turned out to be a replica air soft gun. today 24-year-old david douglas pleaded not guilty to refusing to get off the street during a protest march next month.

30-year-old ramon kiro was charged yesterday with assaulting a police officer during a demonstration on december 10. the 60-year-old bank robbery suspect shot by a marin county sheriff deputy last week is out of the hospital tonight and now out of jail. investigators say christopher wuton waved a gun at police. they are looking into whether he is the cotton ball bandit. that suspect is known for a brown beanie. prosecutors say mcclinton got into an argument with his wife and tried to drive his car off the bridge. he pulled his wife out of the car and tried to throw her over

a 13-year-old girl remains on life support tonight at oakland's children's hospital. mcmath was declared brain dead after what was supposed to be a routine surgery. ktvu's john fowler reports on the steps her family is taking to keep her on a ventilator. >> save our baby. save our jahai. >> reporter: all day and night family and friends have kept a vigil as mcmath lay in oakland children's hospital icu brain dead. >> she didn't come in here like this. she was not a sick child she was totally healthy. >> reporter: the family says doctors told them jahai died five days ago. the tragic result of a tonsillectomy and andelectomy gone wrong. the hospital wanted to terminate life support this

morning. the lawyer delivered this letter demanding the hospital not do so. >> the hospital has now backed off from the efforts to remove life support. >> you know we're not on doctors times anymore. we're on god's time. it's provided us more time to get together and pray. >> reporter: the family has asked hospital staff to feed jahai through a tube and give her antibiotics. her insurance continues to pay. the hospital is only doing so out of compassion for the family. >> they need to give her some time to wake up. when she's ready to go she will release herself. if not, she will give up. >> reporter: she >> reporter: -- if not she will get up. >> reporter: in oakland john fowler ktvu channel 2 news.

renovation suddenly collapses and some neighbors say they're not surprised at what happened. the house at crown terrance and clarendon in the twin peaks was being significantly enlarged. the property has been the focus of a neighborhood dispute. >> reporter: the small two story house began falling at about 10:30 last night from crown terrace toward gray stone terrace. no one was living there and no one was injured. >> i thought, that looks like it was about ready to fall. >> reporter: the house was being remodeled. it had been lifted up and placed on a cradle. the owner of the house murphy is a prominent san francisco developer.

decapitated birds wrapped in cloth. they were found with a bundle of plants, candles and fabric marked by symbols. >> i usually try to keep a log of the location. and there appears to be no pattern at all. >> reporter: officers say they have almost no luck in finding the culprits in these cases. federal transportation officials are backing a tough new penalty for drunk drivers even first time offenders. the national highway traffic safety administration is urging all states to require the use of ignition interlock devices. a driver must exhale into the device before cars motors can be started. 20 states currently use them. four california counties including alameda county take part in a pilot program

requiring i.d.s. in temperatures cooled just a bit today. they've been coming down in the last couple of days. we saw 70s just recently and now we're back into the upper and mid-60s. by tomorrow it's low 60s. one spot is morgan hill today. high temperatures upper 50s low 60s. we had a few reports of sprinkles down by monterey. the overnight lows today just like yesterday. 42 in concord. relatively warm compared to what we were seeing last week when we saw temperatures you know below freezing in many places. low pressure center is going to swing by. as it does it's going to pick up those wind. a wind advisory will go into effect. wind gusts could go to 50 miles per hour. a wind advisory in effect. that could be the case.

so right now a wind advisory will go into effect tomorrow. the winds will be north- northeast and they'll be howling. clouds tomorrow morning. clearing out tomorrow afternoon. a few clouds moving in in the evening hours and then it clears out again. that's that system that goes through. that's the trigger for the wind. we get in here thursday morning. the winds are going to start to ramp up and the mountains they're going to get some snow and throughout the day on thursday. we have windy conditions as that high kind of builds in. we'll be watching. thursday is the headline in the weather center for how windy it's going to get and could we see a warning. and 57 in half-moon bay. 60 in mountain view and 61 in san jose. cooler tomorrow. you knew that. wind kicks up in here. that gets rid of those spare the air days. you're not going to see spare the air days with these winds.
