and then a low will form down in southern california and that will give us a breezy cooler windy pattern for awhile. at least into friday. san francisco out of those 50s. 57 for a high today. lows have definitely been coming up. still a few 30s to 40s and 50s. higher clouds favoring systems to the south. turning cooler today. sun to the north. clouds to the south. could be a few light sprinkles. a little breezy at times. it will be more of a westerly breeze. 50s and 60s now. here is sal. steve, good morning. we are looking pretty good out there. so far any way. as you can see from these pictures it is light at the bay bridge toll plaza. there are no major problems there. as a matter of fact its a very nice drive continuing into the city. also the traffic in san francisco itself along the freeways that looks good.

coming up northbound 101 approaching the 80 split. if you are driving this morning on the freeways traffic is looking good in the south bay. let's goal back to the desk. we are fallowing breaking news in san francisco where police have just recovered a stolen atm after a mild chase. just an amazing story. >> that is correct. i will tell you we were the first ones out here on the scene. there is gait a mess out here. i talked to witnesses. he said it sounded like a car accident that happened just before 3:30 this morning. he said he saw a white van back up and hit that pillar. then he put that chain. there is a chain right there. he wrapped the chain around the atm. they basically dragged the vehicle or dragged the atm behind the vehicle and took off. as you can see there is paper and a lot of debris.

a lot of broken pillar right there to show where they pulled it and the force. the witnesses tell me there were two people in the vehicle. they say recently police say they just found that van in -- of course we are staying on top of this and bringing you the very latest as it develops. once again we are told the people are in custody. there were two men driving a van that tried to pull. well they didn't try they successfully pulled the atm. live in san francisco i'm paul chambers ktvu channel 2 news. a san francisco elementary school has received dozens of complaints and threats over an internet hoax. th san francisco chronicle officials they report that officials at argon elementary school have been overwhelmed with e-mails and phone calls since a story claiming a student was suspended for wishing an atheist teacher a merry christmas started circulating on the internet.

the story is not true and the school had to hire extra security in response to the threats it has received. the story originated several days ago on a website called the national report. check your mega millions lottery ticket because someone until the bay area is a multimillionaire this morning. jenny's gifts and kids ware on fully road in san jose sold one of the two winning tickets to last night's jackpot drawing. it was worth $636 million. the whole drawing. it could reach $648 million because of last minute ticket sales. no one has come forward to claim the prize but the owner of the gift shop will receive $1 million for selling one of the winning tickets. here are the winning numbers. another winning ticket was sold in georgia. we will have a live report from the san jose store at the top of the hour. in canada a lottery winner there is sharing his good fortune.

tom says he will give away his entire $40 million jackpot to charity. he recently lost his wife to cancer and already donated more than $1 million to a treatment center. while chris is generous, it has happened before. three years ago a couple almost gave away all of their $11 million jackpot. firefighters in monterey county are getting the upper hand on the huge wild fire in big sur. it started sunday night. now the rare december fire has destroyed about two dozen structures. half of those are homes. the fire has burned nearly 800 acres. its now about 20% contained. full containment is expected within the next few days. no injuries are reported. that is the good news. still no official word on how the fire started. time is 4:34. a record streak of spare the air alerts continues today for the 11th day in a row. people with breathing problems are being asked to stay inside

and wood burning is banned. there have already been 15 spare the air days so far in the winter season compared to ten last year. th streak could be broken tomorrow if increasing winds dispurse some of the air pollution. a fire at a recycling plant we have been reported in redwood city and the wild fire in big sur are contributing to the poor air quality. people whole live near the sames metal management yard was asked to stay in their homes after that fire started early yesterday morning. it was put out by 7:00 a.m. but the smoke and chemical smell lingered for most of the day. >> it smelled like it could be toxic. it was definitely an electrical fire or something we shouldn't be breathing. >> schools moved pe classes and lunch breaks indoors. people with breathing problems still being advised to keep the doors and windows shut. traffic investigators in oakland are trying to sort out

through a grizzly crash last night in which a big rig ran over and killed a bicyclist. the 62-year-old victim was hit at fifth and market street. bike torn apart and wedged into the back of the truck. officers eventually stopped the big rig a few blocks away. the crumpled bike was still lodged beneath it. >> sometimes when they make those turns, the back trailer portion will swing around and get reallyless to the curb. she may have got caught underneath there. >> now the cyclist was wearing a helmet and had flashing lights on her backpack and bike. the big rig belongs to alegray trucking which is out of lodie. police in reno are trying to determine the motives behind a shooting at a medical center

where a gunman killed one person and injured two others before turning the gun on himself. it happened yesterday afternoon. now reportedly the two people who were injured in the shooting were in surgery at the time. one was a doctor. until word on the identity of the person who -- no word on the identity of the person who was killed. counseling is being offered at those the the medical center. we brought in a number of resources to help the victims here. a lot of them work here. they deal with trauma. obviously they are in the medical field. but when it hits home like that, its harder. authorities in colorado say the high school student who opened fire on a classroom planned a much larger attack. he written plans to attack at least five areas of the school. and he showed up at arapaho

wanted to terminate life support but their lawyers sent a cease and desist order. >> we are happy they have backed off. we are not on doctors times anymore. we are on god's time. it has provided us more time to get together and pray. >> now the family has asked doctors to feed her through a tube and give her antibiotics. once a patient is declared brain dead there is no obligation for life support that the hospital is only doing so out of compassion for the family. now that vigil with the family and friends starts at 6:00 tonight at the paradise baptist church in east oakland. newark police need help identifying the woman accused in a bank scam. the woman in this photo and another woman asked the bank of america customer to cash a check. they gave him a check made out to cash.

president obama has tapped janet napolitano. napolitano also led a delegation to the 2010 winter olympics in canada. two openingly gay athletes are -- billy king will attend the opening ceremony and katelyn will represent the u.s. at the closing ceremony. the move comes at a time when russia has been under fire for national laws banning what they call gay propaganda. time is 4:46. following in the footsteps of bat kid the city of ray vallejo is going to launch a super hero of their own. a group of people in vallejo wanted to surprise her with her own day as a super hero. especially when they found out that the young girl was a big fan of wonder woman.

many. here's the one from the north. this almost push these out of the area south and east. for the morning cloudy to the south. 30s tos and 50s -- 30s to 40s and 50s. a wind advisory is out for tonight. small craft advisory there. 20s up in the mountains. cloud cover definitely holding up some of the temps here. 50 in monterey. you can see the cloud cover associated with a weak little low. the combination of the two means a cooler pattern. we will get more of a westerly breeze here. it will be windy on thursday and cooler. temperatures will settle in upper 50s and 60s. tonight north and east bay hills. i think everybody will get on a breezy pattern. turning cooler today. clouds to the south. sunny to the north. highs today 50s and now low 60s. you can say goodbye to the 70s that is for sure. even santa cruz was 73 degrees.

welcome back to the morning news. police in vallejo are looking for the robber that snuck into a mcdonald's restaurant that entered a drive through window. the armed suspect broke into the mcdonalds on east lincoln road at 2:00 yesterday afternoon. or 2:00 yesterday morning that is. he held a night manager and forced them to strip their clothes and lock them in the freezer. there is surveillance video of the crime. also in vallejo an autopsy has determined a body found on july 5th was someone who was murdered. the decomposed body had wounds

to the skull police have not been able to match any dna. the victim was a latino man between 30-50 years old. 5'6"-5'10" tall. a mill valley man is facing attempted murder and domestic violence charges after prosecutors say he tried to throw his wife off the san mateo bridge. instead 47-year-old xavier clinton fell from the bridge himself and into the bay. he was rescued from the water. now prosecutors say he got into an argument with his wife and tried to drive their car off the bridge. when it crashed into a barrier he allegedly pulled his wife from the car and tried to throw her over the railing. other drivers that had stopped and grabbed the woman's legs and pulled her to safety. arson and bomb technicians are looking into the cause of

an oven fire. that happened just before noon yesterday as inmates were preparing lunch. six inmates were treated in the infirmary and four were taken to the hospital. the sheriffs deputy was checked out for ringing in his ears but that sheriffs deputy has been released. the jail was locked down for several hours following that explosion. and anen usual holiday donation drive is under way in san francisco to help police save lives. the adopt a police car is raising donations to help put defibrillators in all 320 patrol cars in the city. they can meanth difference between life and death when used in the first ten minutes after cardiac arrest. >> the police are often the first people to arrive. they are often there before the paramedics or fire department. >> donations are being accepted at wall greens through san francisco. each defibrillator costs $1900. if you'd like to help, we have a link to the program on our website just go to ktvu.com and
