blustery day. 50s and 60s. here is sal. steve, we have a crash on 880 northbound. this is a big rig crash here. several other cars involved. the good news we found the injuries are minor and the incident is really just about getting the wrecked cars out of the way. it was first reported someone may have been trapped inside but again the injuries turned out to be relatively minor. but there is glass and debris all over the road and northbound 880 traffic is going to be slow as you can see it is backing up quickly and pretty soon this should be backing up all the way down to the coliseum. this is one of the freeways that doesn't take much for it to get really bad. we are recommending you use 580 as an alternate. let me throw up a map. 580 is actually really good right now as i'm tracing this line. you can see the road sensors all green. the traffic is actually doing very well on 580.

much better than 880. let's talk about the bay bridge toll plaza. that is backed up for a small delay. let's go back to the desk. new this morning one person has now been detained after an atm smash and grab in san francisco. ktvu paul chambers has been on the scene this morning since 4:30 this morning. and paul, you have more on this wild chase that went all the way to treasure island. >> that is correct. wild chase indeed. we are here at the intersection of jackson and fillmore. this is the store where it all happened here behind me. you can see that post right there. there is a lot of debris surrounding it. police are cleaning up the area. this is where two men are driving a white van. stole an atm from the store. you can see pieces of a chain remains where the criminals are believed to use it to rip the atm from the post. people living in the area heard the incident and thought it was a car crash. >> they front ended it a couple of times. the thing was over on its side. and then pulled the van up to

the front. threw the machine in the back and drove off. >> reporter: police say the criminals took the atm from this area. drove it across the bay bridge to treasure island. for some unknown reason police say that is where they ran into someone on ti. the suspects then got goth on the bay bridge driving -- got on the bay bridge driving people in a chase. the atm was found inside the van. police have taken someone into custody and they also say right now they believe the van is stolen out of the south bay. of course they are look for one more suspect. if you know anything about this case, you are asked to call san francisco police. ktvu channel 2 news. somebody is worth millions and millions of dollars after buying a winning lottery ticket in san jose. jenny's gifts and kids wear on

tully road sold one of two big tickets to last night's jackpot drawing. it ballooned to $648 million because of last minute ticket sales. the owner of the gift shop she will get $1 million for selling the ticket. the other winning ticket was bought at a newsstand in atlanta, georgia. the two winners will split that giant jackpot. they each have 180 days to come forward and collect their prize. here's the winning numbers. 8, 14, 17, 20, 39, and the mega number is 7. a san francisco elementary school has become the target of a holiday hoax on the internet. tara moriarty is joining us from the richmond district to explain why this hoax is no laughing matter. >> reporter: the school probably doesn't think the hoax was very funny and neither will san francisco taxpayers when they learn about the dollars that had to be spent on security in the wake of this

hoax that went viral. now the rumor was started by the national report which is pegged as a website. it had people nation-wide believing a student at argon elementary school was suspended after wishing an atheist teacher a merry christmas. the national report site has garnered at least 20,000 likes and shares on facebook nearly 400 links linked to the original story popped up on twitter feeds. dozens of websites picked up the made up story. many conservative based and they got fired up this fake incident was another example of the war on christmas. the school's principal had to issue an explanation on the school's website and with all the money that had to be spent on extra staff and security, many people say this simply wasn't a funny joke. live in san francisco i'm tara

moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. there is another glitch in the new bart contract. this one involves conflicting dates on when some rules involving new hires will begin. bart management and union leaders have already had to resume negotiations due to a heated dispute over a costly family leave clause. bart's board of directors is expected to review the contract battle during tomorrow's meeting. time 6:07. investigators in oakland dealing with a deadly crash. a big rig ran over and killed a bicyclist. her bike was torn apart and wedged into the back of that truck. one witness called 911 after hearing the sound of metal on the street and then realizing what had happened. the police eventually stopped the big rig a couple blocks away. that crumpled bike was still underneath it. >> sometime whence they make

those turns, the back trailer portion will swing around and get close to the curb and she may have got caught underneath there. >> bicyclist was wearing a helmet, had flashing lights on her backpack and on her bike. the big rig belongs to alegre trucking. the investigation into this horrible case continues. a record streak of spare the air alerts continues today for the 11th day in a row. people with breathing problems are being asked to stay inside and wood burning is banned. we've already had 15 spare the air days so far this winter season compared to ten last year. the streak could be broken tomorrow. now a fire at a recycling plant that we've been reporting in redwood city and that wild fire down in big sur are contributing to the poor air quality. people who live near the sims metal management yard were asked to stay in their homes after the fire started early yesterday morning. it was put out by 7:00 a.m. but the smoke and the chemical

smell lingered for most of the day. >> we feel a smell of chemical and the air is very heavy. >> schools moved pe classes and lunch breaks inside. people with breathing problems are still being advised to keep their doors and windows shut. and avoid spending times outdoors. firefighters in monterey county are getting an upper hand on that fire. it started between highway 1 and the ocean. this rare december fire comes after california's driest years on record. it has destroyed about two dozen structures. half of them homes. the fires burned nearly 800- acres so far. its nearly 20% contained. full containment is expected within the next few days. the good news is no injuries are reported but there is still until official word on how that fire started. happening today the u.s. senate expected to approve a

two year budget deal. it cleared a test vote in the senate with the help of 12 republicanst. the measure rolls become some of the sharp sequestration budget cuts and averts the risk of another government shut down. at least for two years. here at home glide memorial church making sure needy people will have a home cooked meal. volunteers will start passing out 5,000 bags of groceries to low income families. each bag has turkey or chicken, potatoes, bread, pasta, rice, beans, and vegetables. this giveaway starts at 7:30 this morning. it will continue until 12:30. also in san jose sacred heart community service will be handing out christmas food boxes for needy families. that giveaway starts at 9:00 this morning. praying for a 13-year-old girl in oakland. the event that the family has

remodeling and expansion project that drew opposition from neighbors. the city council voted to set up guidelines for a plan to use eminent domain to prevent foreclosures. they will give priority to those neighborhoods that have suffered the most. and property owners would have to opt into the program. it does not mean the city is ready to start eminent domain proceedings. time is 6:17. rob ford is making big headlines again. he apologized to a reporter who is suing the mayor for liable. and then the mayor started dancing. he did all this during the same city council meeting. that is mayor ford. he started dancing during a performance of bob marley's songs. he did apologize for insinuating that reporter was a

child molester. >> i have never used that word to describe mr. hail. i do not believe mr. hail is a pedophile. nor did i intend as to judge that in my comments. >> the controversial mayor ford has refused to resign over allegations he took crack cocaine, and sexually harassed staff members. mayor ford has stopped drinking. he has lost 26 pounds since starting a workout regimen after the scandal. a tourist in australia fell off a pier as she was checking facebook on her phone. a witness saw her fall into the bay in mel bourn, australia and called police. they saw her flailing about. she told police she couldn't swim and she apologized because she had to be called. police say she still had the phone in the hand when they fished her out of the water opinion they didn't say exactly what country she was from. 6:18 is the time.

let's go back over to sal. i know you are covering the lanes blocked on 880. >> no one was seriously injured. however, a lot of damage to the vehicles. but since no one was seriously injured, they can kind of work quicker in getting the cars out of the way. the fire department is there because there was a spill of oil and glass all over the place. but you can tell they are working faster. when someone is injured that is the priority. but now they basically have property damage. they will get the lanes open as quick as possible. they have been closed now for about an hour. not quite an hour. traffic is backing up on 880 northbound way down as you can see coming up toward downtown. so use 580 as your alternate route. in fact, i can show you on the 580 alternate route the lanes are looking pretty good. this is beginning to look like preholiday conditions. usually on 580 right now we

welcome back to the morning news. 6:25 is the time. an unusual holiday donation drive is under way in san francisco to help police save lives. the adopt a police car program is raising donations to help put defibrillators in all 320 patrol cars in the city. police say that they can be the difference between life and death when used in the first ten minutes after a cardiac arrest. >> the police are often the first people to arrive. they are often there before the paramedics or fire department. >> donations are being accepted at wall greens in san francisco. time is 6:26. christmas as you know is just a week away. and the organization christmas for everyone in concord they are running short of toys. they need more toys donated. every year at christmas everyone offers christmas day dinner to 3,000 people plus they give away toys for kids and clothing for adults.

the toll plaza may be stuck in a backup on 880. it is lighter than usual for 6:30. it looks pretty good. very small delay. 880 south bay we are seeing traffic beginning to drop off. so remember on my facebook page i started asking when were we going to see the drop off? apparently its wednesday before the holiday week. so we will see what happens. at 6:32 let's go back to the desk. new this morning. san francisco police recovered a stolen atm. it was stolen just hours ago in the fillmore district and then there was a wild chase across the bay bridge. ktvu paul chambers has been on the story since 4:30. you are back with all the details. so what happened? >> reporter: i can tell you -- let me first start off the owner is behind me here. he is cleaning up the area. cleaning up the scene. exactly where that atm once stood. you can see a lot of debris on the ground. that is where leftovers from the criminals ripping off the

atm. now police say it all started around 3:30 this morning. that is when witnesses saw two men inside a white van trying to take the atm. we are told the suspects tried using a chain to rip the atm from a pole. we spoke to two of the witnesses about the crime. one asked we not show his identity. >> a loud sound like a two-car accident. and looked out the window and there was a white van that crashed. i thought into the store. >> they front ended it a couple of times. the thing was over on its side and pulled the van up to the front. threw the machine in the back and drove off. >> reporter: police found the van with the atm inside here. but before ending up here, police say the two criminals left the original scene, drove the van with the atm inside across the bay bridge. for some unknown reason stopped at treasure island. then the suspects ran into more

people. but we do know the winning ticket was bought here at jenny's gift shop. its in lions plaza. the owner of the store received a phone call last night from lottery officials telling him somebody hit all five numbers and the mega number. he was thrilled because he will receive around $1 million for selling the ticket. the jackpot was $636 million. but its now estimated to be at about $648 million because of all the sales. that is a second highest lottery jackpot in u.s. history. another winning ticket was sold at a newsstand in atlanta, georgia. both winners will split the jackpot. if they choose the lump sum it will pay out in cash. we spoke to a man who buys tickets from the lucky store jenny's but he didn't win. >> its amazing. my kids texted me and called me up last night. >> reporter: how do you feel for the owner? how exciting is this?

>> they are so lucky. >> reporter: you bought a ticket there too? >> once in awhile. >> reporter: here's the winning numbers again. they are 8, 14, 17, 20, 39, and the mega number is 7. the winners have one year to claim their jackpot. and we are all waiting out here in front of the store. waiting for the store owner to open up. we are told the store opens up at 9:00. we are waiting to see if the winners will show up this morning because this will be one heck of a christmas present for him. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. a member of the hells angels motorcycle club and his wife have been arrested on gun and drug charges in an atf investigation. he was arrested at his home in vacaville after selling stolen military equipment and an assault rifle to under cover

agents. they say kellogg is a member of the vallejo chapter of the hells angels motorcycle club and a search warrant was served at the clubhouse. his wife sarah was also arrested and charged with possessing methamphetamines for sale and bribery. his wife had ties to the chp but we are still working to confirm that information. time is 6:37. the family of a teenage girl who's doctors say is brain dead will hold a prayer vigil tonight. friends and family members have been keeping vigil. she is still in intensive care at oakland's children's hospital a week following her tonsil surgery went very bad. the hospital wanted to terminate life support but their lawyers sent a cease and desist letter and promised legal action against the hospital. >> we are happy they backed off.

we are not on doctors time anymore we are on god's time. it has provided us more time to get together and pray. >> the family is asking doctors to feed jahi through a tube and give her antibiotics. once a patient is declared brain dead, there is no obligation for life support. the hospital is only doing it out of compassion for the family. the prayer vigil will begin at 6:00 tonight at the pairial dice baptist church. police in vallejo are searching for the gunman who broke into a mcdonalds restaurant by slipping past the drive through window. it happened at the mcdonalds on east lincoln road. he pulled a gun on the night manager and another employee. forced them to trip off their clothing and then lock them in a freezer. >> they were ordered into the freezer and employees screaming for their own lives and safety decided to stay put until it was safe to come out. >> the two employees were in

the physically hurt but they were traumatized. there is surveillance video of the crime but the suspect was wearing a mask. authorities in colorado say the high school student who opened fire on classmates last friday had planned a much larger attack. the sheriff in arapaho county says 18-year-old carl pearson had written plans to attack five areas of the school. he had those plans written on his arm. reportedly pearson was looking for revenge against his debate coach who is also the schools library. authorities say when he couldn't find his target he randomly shot claire davis who remains in a coma. this is the season normally for crowded stores but so far this year that doesn't look like the case. inside the pottery barn in walnut creek workers there were busy helping shoppers with their christmas buying but outside a lot of shoppers told ktvu news that they are seeing fewer people inside stores and

malls. the popularity of online shopping is the reason why you see few people out. still she is predicting a modest increase of 4-5%. >> i don't see any reason to be concerned or panicked about this holiday season. >> people are buying the big ticket items like cars and furniture. things they put off for in the years past. and as a result they are buying fewer gifts. there are a few more details now for the last week of holiday shopping. kohls they plan to stay open for 108 straight hours from friday morning through christmas eve. toys r us opening for 87 straight hours from saturday through christmas eve. k-mart will be open until 10:00 p.m. christmas eve. target stores will be open until 9:00 or 10:00 christmas eve it all depends on the city you are in. >> that does not mean you should wait until christmas eve.

referred to -- had people believing it was true. the student, the teacher they don't even exist. but that didn't stop the school from getting bombarded with phone calls, nasty e-mails according to the san francisco chronicle. argon elementary school administer tours met -- administrators met and decided to beef up security. dozens of websites also picked up the made up story. many of them conservative based that got fired up that the fake incident was another example of the war on christmas. this is very similar to another story that the national report carried regarding a berkeley elementary school student awhile back. coming up we will tell you how it was different and how the

welcome back. 6:56. a bizarre discovery along lake merced tuesday morning and that led for calls to police and a mall control -- animal control officers. two decapitated birds. they were found with plants and candles on red and black sheets marked with symbols. animal control officials think this is part of an illegal animal sacrifice. one of 20 of these cases they see in the city this year.
