mcmath and her family. hello. i am frank somerville. >> and i am julie haener. >> the family and friends of jahi mcmath are gathering right now. they say even if you can't come to the candlelight vigil there is something you can do. ktvu's allie rasmus is live in oakland. what do the parents want? >> reporter: they are asking people to keep their daughter in their thoughts and prayers. the family of jahi mcmath are hosting a prayer vigil here at the church on empire road in oakland. it just got underway. we can hear music and we have seen a few people opening the doors to head inside. prayer service is open to the public. doctors declared jahi mcmath brain dead a week ago. she went in on december 9 for a tonsillectomy. she suffered bleeding after the surgery and went into cardiac

arrest. the family is not ready to say good-bye. they took legal action to keep her on life support. 15 minutes ago the family arrived at the church and the mother spoke to the media and she asked anyone who sympathized with her situation to pray for her daughter. >> i don't care where it is coming from. i will accept it as long as it is good for her. pray for her. she is a sweet girl. she is a big part of my heart. 579 the press conference -- >> reporter: at the press conference they expressed gratitude for the support they received on social media. there water thousand messages on twitter. back out here live you can see folks walking into the church for this prayer vigil that is going on. we could hear music going on. the family isn't sure how many people they are expecting but

they would like anyone to say a prayer for their daughter. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police say officers busted a gift shop this afternoon that was selling a lot more than gifts. police tweeted out this photo of 28 pounds of marijuana. three people were also arrested. one is facing charges of being a felon in possession of a loaded gun. the shop had no permit to sell medical marijuana. church has been found libel for failing to protect children from sexual abuse. the church on the hill was found partly responsible for the harm suffered by three girls. the church recommended keith woodhouse for the job even though they fired him for

inappropriate behavior with children. he was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for abusing 9 children at two day care programs. an attorney for the victim has fixed feelings. >> but the stronger message we believe was not sent and that is the church we believe covered up a pedophile. >> the jury awarded the families a total of $720,000. new information now on repairs to the eastern span of the bay bridge. caltrans said the prepare job on the broken bolts is now complete. as we reported last summer a third of the bolts cracked as they were being tightened. >> the fix, the saddles are functional and the fix that allowed us to open the bridge they have been taken out. >> the cost which was estimated

a 10 to $15 million came in at $25 million. that is within its budget. they will continue stress and testing on other bolts to make sure they will stand the test of time. a san jose high school will be conducting its first bingo fundraiser since a robber made off with thousands of dollars last week. parents and staff members at oak grove high school are setting up for the weekly game that funds had band. they will now have a off duty police officer along with surveillance cameras and a new system to secure all the money. it is paid for by $15,000 in donations. robbery involving a stolen van, cash machine and a high- speed chase through san francisco. ktvu's paul chambers shows us how it all went down and who police are looking for. >> reporter: broken chains, paper and debris is all that is

left after two men ripped an atm from its support post in san francisco. >> loud sound like a two car accident. looked out the window there was a white van that crashed. >> reporter: this witness says the commotion was so loud it woke imup around 3:30 p.m -- him up about around 3:00 p.m. this morning. that is when they noticed the atm was missing. >> was on its side and then pulled the van up to the front, threw the machine in and drove off. >> reporter: the two men drove to treasure island where they ran into more officers. they then drove the wrong way on the bay bridge. the two men ditched the vehicle here at 19th and missouri streets. officers found the vehicle with the atm still inside.

across town the store owner cleaned up and said in 20 years he never seen anything like today's event. >> the owner has to get the support post checked out. >> reporter: as for whether they get a new atm that is unclear. in san francisco, paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. a jury found a man guilty today in a brutal gang rape in richmond. he was convicted of kidnapping, rape and other charges in that attack in 2008. the charges included hate crime enhancements because the victim is a lesbian. he was the ring leader who robbed the woman and then he and two others kidnapped, raped and beat her. he faces life in prison. the rising cost of living

in san francisco. some are calling an epidemic of evictions. >> in 5 years san francisco will be a place only billionaires could live in. we need solutions for now. >> mayor ed lee ordered agencies to expedite new housing projects. 40,000 units are in the pipeline. the city looking into converting school district and park properties into housing. someone in the south bay is a new mega millions winner today. ktvu's cristina rendon is live at jenny's gifts in san jose with how the win is a big win for the state. >> reporter: it is. it will benefit the state. in the hour leading up to the drawing, stores were selling 31,000 tickets a minute and a portion of that goes to help

and not a bonus. this afternoon the winner in georgia met with officials, ira curry from stone mountain. she bought just one ticket and she chose the numbers herself using birth days and her lucky number 7. >> very lucky. thousands of families received all the ingredients for a family meal today. they provided 5,000 grocery bags to needy families. they were filled with bread, pasta and sauce, rice and beans and vegetables. >> all kinds of folks who are in need and they want some response so we provided it without hesitation. it worked every year and it will continue to work. >> donations are still needed for the holidays, including food, toys and cash donations. someone in san jose posted a video on youtube as a warning

about a woman caught stealing a package off of a porch. take a look. it begins with a woman getting out of a car and walking towards a house. a second camera shows her putting a package into her bag. the poster claims the package was stolen at 3:00 p.m. yesterday. san francisco building inspectors returned to the site of a house that collapsed during renovation. investigators are trying to figure out why the home fell monday night. they said crews are working on a new foundation before the collapse. the home is owned by the port commissioner who served on the building inspection commission in 2012. turning local schools into litter boxes. a bad situation for people and the cats here. >> the feral cat problem and the effort to stop it is called

some friends of governor jerry brown are saying the democrats should make another run for the white house. they say they would support the governor for president in 2016. some analysts say it is not surprising people would consider governor jerry brown to be a strong candidate. >> california is a modern for the rest of the county. we balanced our budget. and i think lot of people are looking forward to that

leadership. >> governor jerry brown made three previous runs for the presidency. the most recent was in 1992 when he was defeated by bill clinton. moving forward in sacramento, the new non-profit commission parks forward held its second meeting on how to improve the department. the group was formed in the wake of financial scandals, including money stashed away in a secret fund. organizers say there is a opportunity capitalize. >> a lot of communities rallied around, friends started helping the park system make sure. >> the commission talked about how to increase revenue and improve park maintenance. an attraction to some but a nuisance to others. two high school campuses are over run with cats. ktvu's ken pritchett shows us this is a problem with no easy

smell is cat food, feces and urine. >> reporter: they captured 158 cats on school grounds in a few months. >> there were 64 kittens put into adoption programs. and 90 will return to the campuses. >> reporter: returning the animals to campus is humane. they made $2,200 to remove the cats with limited results. >> many of them -- >> reporter: they are still working on a solution. this principal said they don't have a mouse problem. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. >> that is for sure. firefighters in big sur are making progress on the pfeiffer fire. calm winds and lower temperatures helped battle the flames. they say the fire burned 843 acres and 74% contained.

it is possible the fire will be contained by late tomorrow. 22 residences have been destroyed. no major injuries have been reported. windy weather should clear the wear in the south bay which has been taking the brunt of snaginant weather -- stagnant weather. >> there is not much you can do to prevent that from happening. >> that is why we called spare the air for the entire area. >> today is the 11th 11th straight spare the air day in the area. gilroy and morgan hill saw severe situations yesterday. made worse by another fire at a scrap metal plant. temperatures today were on the mild side. lots of 50s and low 60s. it was 62 in fairfield today.
