they'll ask members to ratify the new agreement. terms of the agreement are not released. they had to go back to the table over terms the agreement. >> we negotiated for seven months. we are outraged that they held bart riders like this. bart has not commented on the announcement. ac transit has reached a tentative deal with their strike. they'll present the agreement at 10:00 this morning and recommend it be approved. news of the agreement after a strike was going to happen at

midnight. passengers are relief. >> i am releafed because i have to get to the nursing home every day. union leaders previously reached two tentative other agreements. those were both voted down most recently in october. a vote is expected to be complete by the end of the year. food and retail workers are holding out a picket at terminal 2. they are postponing the work stoppage and picket instead. they held a strike in august. it represents 200 workers employed by hmf host. they've been out of work a year and a half. the negotiations have been heated. there has been encouragement recently. two u.s. military aircraft were responding to an outbreak of violence in part of the

country. one of the injured service member is in critical condition. a man suspected of participating in a bar fight has turned himself in. the suspect is a 24-year-old from pittsburgh. the fight happened shortly after 6:00 last night near highway 4. >> we begin there were acquaintances in one way shape or form, we're not sure to what extent. they found a 41-year-old man severely injured. was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead a cause of death has not yet been determined. gunfire outside of san leandro sent people scrambling to safety. two men were arguing in the parking lot when gunfire erupted. one man shot the other and took off in a white exact car --

compact car. a man tried to calm the staff. >> i don't want to have my daughter out here in this type of environment. it's crazy. the rest of the mall remained open after the incident p a guard said security personnel chased the gunman. because the gun was harmed it was safer to get not into a confrontation with them. that shooting came because of a mall in tracy. it happened at the west valley mall. bullets hit the tours of one of the mall entrances. they went looking for the gunman, it came up empty. the mall did remain open for the rest of the night. families will be coming to the west contra costa county for their christmas present. it's part of the public safety toy and food program. we have news live this morning. ali, i guess some families started lining up there at 6:00 this morning. >> some people got in line as

early as 6:00. this give away is happening at the west contra costa ymca. they line up to the door and snakes around the building here. everyone here preregistered even though they came here early they didn't have to. once you are preregistered everyone got a ticket with a designated too many to go in and pick up their toy basket. when it comes to putting toys under the tree they don't want to take chances, they want to make sure they get that bag of toys to get it under their tree and give to their families. about a thousand families have signed up to get toys. there are pikes and bags full of toys. there's a separate area where people can pick up food. police and firefighters in richmond organized this food and toy give away every year.

it started 20 years when richard firefighter handed up toys on his own and realized a great need out there. irish monday first responders also got involved in that too. >> there is always one and their eyes will light up when they see all the bikes. their isolate up and they say when if it wasn't for this, we would have nothing. >> they get a drawing and a bike. there are about 482 bikes to give away this morning. the need has been great and so many families wanted to preregister. organizers weren't sure this if he this to meet that need. they had to cut that registration off at 1,000

families. we're going to talk to people in line and what this means to them and their kids this year. >> a lot of happy families there. chp is hosting arrest last chance toy drive. they're from pier 48 in san francisco. toy donations have been slow this season. they asked that all donations are new and come unwrapped. chips for kids have been supporting bay area families for 28 years. they'll start distributing it toys to needy children in their community. they'll continue through 2:00 in the afternoon it. they'll be at the city hall. located at university avenue. the event is the collaboration of the east palo alto police department and the police officers association. >> toys are us stores nationwide are helping out their last minute shoppers

helping them for 48 hours straight. the doors are open and they'll stay open until 9 p.m. christmas eve. online shoppers have the option to buy online and pick them up within a hour. kohl's said it would stay open 100 consecutive hours before christmas eve. many of the stores are extending their who will dale hours. some stores such as macy's and sears were opened later than that. opening extra hours should lead to shorter lines and less stress for holiday gift givers. >> it will help me. i work every day, and i have to get there late evening. >> some experts say stores are offering the longer hours and satisfy the growing demand for customers to buy what they want

. happening right now, two nasa astronauts are on a space walk to fix a pump on the cooling system in the space station. it's one of three walks set up for repair. they're going to remove the broken pump on monday. the new pump is scheduled to be installed on christmas. they're carrying makeshift snorkels after a helmet of an italian filled with water this year. it is expected to take 6 hours. it looks like santa claus will be using technology to help him guide his sleigh this year. while on a pit stop, a big red jelly giant will be using google glass. he likes to keep up with

. what we're learning about a deal that may settle the contract dispute. welcome back to mornings on 2. here is a look at the top stories we're following for you this morning. two unions say we've struck a deal with bart. terms of ate agreement have not yet been disclosed. bart had to return to the bargaining table after discovering a provision of six weeks paid family leave was left in the contract. union leaders say they'll present the agreement to their members and recommend that it be approved. news of ate agreement comes as a 60-day cooling off period preventing a strike was set to expire at midnight. >> a man involved in a bar

fight that left another man dead has turned himself in. a 41-year-old man from value hoe died, and the suspect is facing murder charges. >> new this morning, police are searching for suspects after a double shooting. it happened on 2nd and san fernando streets. the victims were rushed to the hospital. there is no word on their condition. a legal victory for parents of a girl who is declared brain dead after surgery for tonsils. they have to keep her on life support. she was declared brain dead. she wants a -- the family wants

registration at 1,000 families. the volunteers are at the last minute meeting it getting ready for convenient to start. people will start coming in and picking up these bags full of toys and also some food to take home to their families. live in richmond, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> they're asking for donations to help thousands of homeless people to stay warm this winter. they're asking for donations of sleeping bags hats and gloves. donations can be dropped off at the sunrise home. 6 people have died due to cold overnight temperatures. after seeing people sleeping on the streets during a winter cold snap, autumn lee, an 8- year-old, bought all the sleeping bags and she and her mother drove around and handed them out. the rest were donated to the

livermore homeless refuge. >> inspired by her generosity, her school is holding its own sleeping bag drive. that school is located at scenic avenue. it is expected -- accepting donations until january. a new police chief, they're searching for, the police chief is retiring after 31 years. they're searching throughout the country for his replacement. there has been a decrease in violence. they have had no homicides this year. the last time was in 1986. they're investigating a dog fighting ring, they've been in contact with the owner of the animals. he denies they were being forced to fight. 11 dogs with reasonable wounds

extended forecast. a few clouds will pay us a visit the dry weather pattern will continue to pay us a visit. this high pressure area will push the rain up to the north. the rain is focused up to the north in northern california. we'll hold on to a mild weather pattern at least for the morning hours. up in the north bay, the forecast for today is shaping up like this. it's on track to reach the mid- 60s, napa 64, 60s as well. right around san francisco, patchy fog nearby, it will be factory and partly sunny and these temperatures are not changing and as we take a look at the east bay neighborhoods, we're off to oakland and it's on track to reach the lower 60s. the south bay, more sunshine and south bay looking good.

good saturday morning, take a look at san francisco. patchy fog making a come back. it will have an impact for coastal temperatures in the bay area, it will be amide mild afternoon. >> they won't be allowed to attend a hearing on sanity. the judge says testimony about james holmes mental evaluation could influence potential jurors and make it impossible to get a fair trial. he has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity due to killing 12 people and injuring more. he was suffering a psychotic episode at the time of the killings. a high speed chase is now suing the department.

the father of brian beard says he watched everything unfold from a television. he said before the chase began and was aired on tv he said he called and he was advised to pull over. he favored him. i just can't talk, okay. he's concerned about the circumstances leading up to the shooting. the officers involved are on paid leave while the investigation is under way. another march in valley protest the shooting on lopez. they want him charged with murder. he shot and killed him after mistaking his gun for a real weapon. >> they are continuing to foot

there are a number of people who are carrying bags. they will be able to pick up a bag of food in the gymnasium. the cheering that you hear here is for the bike give away. there are only 500 bikes. they get to put their name in a drawing. if they pull out the right cards they get to take home a brand-new bike to take home to their kids. this is the 26th year they've been doing it. they've been done by richmond police and firefighters. it started out when a firefighter gave out toys on his own 26 years ago. this toy and food giveaway is organized by richmond and el cerrito police and firefighters. it all started 26 years ago, when richmond firefighter rod woods began hounding out toys in this neighborhood on christmas. some of the parents we talked to this morning say they are very appreciative of all of this. they say without this help, they wouldn't have much to put under the tree. >> i'm very grateful, because really, my kids really didn't have that much for christmas. my son's birthday is on christmas. >> reporter: this is what the lines outside looked like before doors opened just before 8:00 this morning. some people lined up outside the ymca hours before they were supposed to, as early as 2:00 a.m. about a thousand families signed up for the toy giveaway, but organizers say 700 more families wanted to sign up and asked for help, but they had to cap the numbers at 1000 this year, because they couldn't guarantee they would have enough toys for more than that. back out here live, the way it works, everyone's preregistered for the event. they get a numbered ticket and

provision granting workers six weeks of family leave was mistakenly included in the new contract. the union president released a statement about the agreement saying we negotiated in good faith for seven months. we have been outraged that bart management would hold the bay area riders hostage like this. we expect the bart board will now do it's part and do what they should have done all along, approve this contract. once they do, we will ask members to ratify it as well. bart's general manager also released a statement saying she will recommend that bart's board ratify the agreement. in a statement, she says after uncertainty, this deal with guarantee the agency's focus will be on providing great service through the holiday period and beyond. union leaders say they will present the agreement to their members at 10:00 this morning and recommend that it be approved. news of the agreement comes as

predicting an ice storm on the east coast and in the midwest and tornadoes are possible from texas to mississippi. the national weather service is already investigating whether a tornado touched down last night in edwards, mississippi. no one was injured in that storm. packer fans are making sure the team will play tomorrow's game, despite the winter weather. almost 600 fans turned out to shovel snow at lambeau field. fans were paid $10 an hour and the shovels were provided. well, the holiday travel rush is under way right here in the bay area at sfo, san jose and oakland. a spokesperson for the airport in san francisco says no major delays have been reported, but passengers are being encouraged to allow for extra time to get to the airport and to consider taking mass transit. >> usually i'm pretty on top of it and i'm kind of paranoid about flying, so i always get to the airport a little earlier than most people, i guess. but, you know, it's been pretty efficient so far.

>> yesterday, airport officials said the busiest part of the airport is in the baggage claim airport where people were arriving to pick up friends and family. the uso is trying to make the rush less hectic for members of the military. service members are offered a nursery, showers, luggage storage, food and drinks. sfo is the first airport in the nation to offer a uso facility to welcome home the troops. the uso also operates centers at manetta san jose and travis air force basements. developing news in south sudan, where four u.s. service members have been injured. it happened earlier this morning when two u.s. military aircraft were headed to the site of sudan's worst violence in the past week. one of the injured service members is in critical condition. a u.n. helicopter trying to evacuate peace keepers and civilians was also hit by gunfire. that helped sustained significant damage, but no one was hurt. attorney general eric holder is scheduled to speak today at a memorial service marking the 25th anniversary of the lockerbie bombing. the ceremony will held at the

district, protesters surrounded a bus of apple employees for 30 minutes before finally allowing it to leave. it is the second time in two weeks protesters surrounded buses shuttling workers to silicon valley. the protests come as the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in san francisco has jumped to just under $2800 a month, being near a corporate bus stop can add 20% to rents or housing prices. new numbers show california's unemployment rate went down by 0.02% last month. according to figures released by the employment department, the jobless rate fell to 8.5% in november, still much higher than the national unemployment rate, which dropped to 7%. right now, 1.6 million people are unemployed in california. but numbers show the job situation here in the bay area is much better than it is across the state and nation. marin county has the lowest rate of unemployment at 4.6%, san francisco a close second with a rate of 5.2%. only solano county has an

. well, palo alto police have arrested a massage therapist from menlo park, suspected of sexual battery. police say the man turned himself in on wednesday. in november of 2012, a woman came forward to report that he sexually assaulted her. police say an investigation revealed two other victims from back in 2012. the 35-year-old was working at the la belle day spa and salon at the time. he has been released after posting bail. former san francisco 49ers and oakland raiders lineman

. new this morning, there's finally good news for bart riders, right at the height of the busy holiday travel season. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. two of bart's unions have agreed to a deal that settles a dispute over a new contract. unions say once the bart board votes to approve it, they will ask members to ratify the new agreement. terms of the agreement have not been released yet. bart and its unions went back to the bargaining table after the transit agency said provision granting workers six weeks of paid family leave was mistakenly included in the new contract. the union president released a statement about the agreement, saying we negotiated in good faith for seven months. we have been outraged that bart management would hold the bay area riders hostage like this.

police chief. outgoing police chief walter shoal is scheduled to retire in may. now the city is looking at departments across the country to find his replacement. the city has seen a significant decrease in crime since shoal game police chief in 2010. there have been no homicides last year. the last time the city had no homicides in a year was 198- 6689. a fremont nonprofit is asking for donations to help thousands of homeless people stay warm this winter. abody services is asking for donations of blankets, hats and gloves. they can be dropped off at the emergency shelters on brown road. cash donations can also be made online. the deaths of six homeless people in the bay area have been blamed on exposure to the cold overnight temperatures. after seeing people sleeping on the streets during a recent cold snap, 8-year-old autumn lee decided to save the money she had saved up to buy sleeping bags.

she bought all the sleeping bags at the wal-mart in livermore and handed them out. inspired by her generosity, her school, is holding its own sleeping bag drive. the school is located at 5650 phoenix drive. it will accept donations through january. well, the time has come for the st. anthony's foundation's annual curbside drive. starting today, continuing through christmas eve, volunteers will be collecting food, clothing and monetary donations. organizers say the goal is to collect 500 hams and 2500 pairs of socks before christmas. anyone who wants to leave a donation, just drive up to the dining room on golden gate avenue in san francisco. the san francisco zoo has finally announced the name of its latest addition. the baby gorilla was born on july 17th. it was announced yesterday her name is kabibi, which means little lady in sway healy. people will ge able to get their first glimpse of the baby

a touch cooler, but still a very stable weather pattern over the next few days. no dramatic changes and no rain clouds on the five-day. we'll see if we could add some rain clouds to the forecast beyond five days, but at least at this point, we'll keep things dry and mild here in the bay area. officials investigating a possible dog fighting ring at an east oakland home say they have been in contact now with the owner of those animals. investigators say the owner has admitted the dogs are his, but denies they were being forced to fight. 11 dogs with visible wounds were found earlier this week at that east oakland home, after officers served a warrant in an unrelated investigation. >> he admitted they are fighting dogs. he admitted they are his dogs. we want to talk to him about equipment and medication and what vet did he see and where he got the dogs, is he breeding dogs, things like that. >> the dogs are now in the custody of animal services. san francisco animal care and control is looking for a newly adopted kitten that was stolen. this is a picture of 2-month- old arizona.

she had already been adopted and was waiting to be spayed before going to her new owner. animal care and control released surveillance video of two women who were at the shelter at the time she was stolen. anyone who may know these women are asked to call animal care and control. new this morning, police are searching for suspects after a double shooting near san jose state university. it happened around 10:00 last night on 2nd and san fernando streets. when police arrived, they found two men who were both shot at least once. the victims were transported to the hopped. no word on their condition this morning. a bay area city is struggling to put a stop to pedestrian deaths. this year, san francisco has seen 17 people killed in accidents between pedestrian vehicles, including two separate cases on thursday and friday. pedestrian advocates say that's a higher number of deaths compared to last year. the district attorney is calling for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists to be more careful and conscious of each other, especially this holiday season. >> we want to continue to hammer this and hopefully we

can end the rest of the year with any additional fatalities. >> pedestrian advocacy groups say san francisco is second only to new york city in pedestrian fatalities. the parents of a 13-year- old girl who has been declared brain dead after surgery to remove her tonsils. oakland's children's hospital must keep the girl on life support until an independent neurologist can examine her. officials urged her to remove her from life support after she was declared brain dead nine days ago, but her family wants an independent expert to confirm that. >> the hospital is addressing the child as if she is dead already. their position is she is dead. there is no treatment she is entitled to. >> it violates the ethical cannons of the hospital to continue to provide care to a deceased person. >> a neurologist could examine the girl as soon as monday and a decision could be made before christmas on whether or not she will remain on life support. another march and rally has

been held in santa rosa to protest the police shooting of 13-year-old andy lopez. protesters say they want the sheriffs deputy who shot and killed lopez to be charged with murder. sonoma county sheriffs deputy shot and killed lopez in october after mistaking his replica rifle for an assault weapon. >> the pledge is for students to sign on to pledge to continue for the fight for justice, for their friend, for their cousin, for their community member, for their schoolmate. >> the deputy was placed on administrative leave, but has returned to work earlier this month. the father of brian baird says he watched everything unfold live on television from his fresno home last friday night when his son was involved in a police shooting. he says before it began, his son called police and said he was being chased by police and

out christmas presents for their children. ktvu's allie rasmus has been live in richmond since before the doors opened to capture all the excitement on this saturday. hey, allie. >> reporter: well, a lot of people lined up early outside the building, some as early as 2:00 this morning, even though they didn't really have to. the way it worked here, if someone is preregistered for the event, they get a registration ticket with a number on it and that number corresponds to one of these numbered bags full of toys here. then when people come through the line, all the volunteers you see here pick up the bag, hand it off to the people who are coming to pick up their gift bags. now, 1000 families have preregistered for this event. the toy and food giveaway is organized by el cerrito and richmond police and firefighters. organizers say they were running dangerously low on donations up until just a few days ago. >> five days ago, we put out a request to the public to help maas our goal because we were running short. and $7500 was raised by online donations, just people giving

$20, $30 here and there. somebody else came out with a large donation, $10,000, which chevron matched. that's in five days. that's because people care a lot about what's happening this season. >> i'm very grateful! really, my kids really didn't have that much for christmas. my son's birthday is on christmas. child's christmas letter to santa. ktvu has more on the volunteer elves in san francisco that did their best to fulfill those childhood wishes. >> reporter: the u.s. post office on evans street in san francisco is turning into santa's workshop. over a thousand letters to santa were mailed in from bay area kids and these are some of the volunteers making those christmas wishes come true. >> this will go in here. >> we're blessed. a lot of people in the bay are blessed. lot of people are struggling. it's a good time to work out. >> reporter: they signed up to be santa's helpers for the first time this year, gifting presents to seven children. but it's not easy when a child wants a picture of santa's reindeer. >> i wasn't able to pull that off, but basically told her we couldn't get them together all at the same time. kind of a rough day. they are not into selfies. >> reporter: they did find traditional toys, like a barbie, bike, legos and cars. >> some kids aren't asking for toys. they want the necessities. one kid asked santa for food,

report figures of baby jesus being stolen from nativity scenes. now a company is offering a solution. a small gps device can be installed on the baby jesus figures. the company says if they turn up missing, the holiday thief can hopefully be tracked down using that gps device. people in utah are lining up to get married after a federal judge struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage. yesterday, the judge ruled that the ban was demeaning, for no reason. three same-sex couples had sued the state, trying to overturn the ban. the national organization for marriage called the ruling a, quote, travesty of justice. the state has filed an appeal on the ruling. well, barbecue restaurant in washington, dc is serving up more than just ribs. it is helping at-risk use learn job skills. hundreds of teens and young adults have taken part in the program, many of whom have a criminal history or struggled with drug abuse. >> how do you get out of poverty? you get out of poverty through work, through doing a good day's work every day and looking at the goodness of what
