looking for a postal thief. >> reporter: ken three attempts the past week before her exam finally work that the novato post office and now parcels are gone and the search is on for the burglar in a blue uniform. at the busiest time of their year, bay area postal carriers have a new distraction. a thief who blends in with them. arriving for work in the morning. >> if you don't know them, ask for id. that advice from a supervisor at this richmond facility, where the woman in a postal uniform got inside, claiming she was a new employee, but when asked for id, she pulled out pepper-spray and ran out. >> we don't want to go after her because she may have a gun. you never know. >> reporter: the following monday another try, this time at a facility in el cerrito. where the impostor got into the backdoor, but was confronted by

someone and escaped. >> there is obviously a level of comfort to come in and attempt to get inside a post office. >> reporter: it is a former employee? a employee's friend or relative? investigators don't know but she is determined. yesterday morning she slipped into san rafael's main post office, but after being challenged head north to novato, where she finally succeeded. >> she was able to get a number of parcels, the number that were tanner we're still trying to determine what was taken. >> translator: parcels destined for delivery that day, now missing. >> it's a federal offense and standing $00,000 reward. >> reporter: a serious crime carrying up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. the suspect is described as a heavyset african-american woman. there are surveillance images of her, but investigators don't want those out to the public just yet. richmond, employees believe she may be the same person who slipped in previously and stole

a carrier's purse from an employee area. so it appears mail isn't all she is a. reporting live in novato, debora villone, ktvu channel 2 news. happening now, police are holding checkpoints in at least three places around the bay area. you are looking at live pictures now of one of those checkpoints. this one is in san carlos. officers are urging party-goers to choose a designated driver to stay sober and give others a ride home. if you see a drunk driver you are asked to call 911. so far this holiday period one bay area county is reporting a dramatic increase, alameda county says enforcement - law enforcement says it arrested 285 drivers since december 13th. that is up almost 65% from 2012. it santa clara county reports a total of 189 arrests during the same period. last weekend, that county also showed an increase in drunk- driving arrests compared to last year. the 17-year-old victim in

the arapahoe high school shooting last week in colorado has died. claire davis has shot in the head by a gunman at her high school in colorado eight days ago. she passed away today, surrounded by her family at a hospital. the arapahoe county sheriff says it appears 18-year-old karl pierson shot her at random. officials believe that pierson was targeting a librarian who disciplined him weeks ago. a heart-wrenching letter from the mother of a 13 -year-old girl has been released. nailah winkfield, the mother of jahi mcmath asked for prayers on behalf of her daughter. the family went to court to keep jahi on life support. yesterday a judge ruled in favor of the family and scheduled a hearing for monday, to appoint a neurologist to further examine the girl and determine

wounds are not life- threatening. a guard says security personnel chased the gunman, but decided since the map had a gun, it was safer to avoid a confrontation and the man got away. tracy police responned to an incident at the west valley mall. someone there opened fire outside of the mall and bullets hit one of the mall entrances. police say no one was hurt and a s.w.a.t. team went car to car looking for the gunman, but came up empty. the mall remained open the rest of the night. jpmorgan chase announced its limiting the use of debit cards for customers at risk in the hacking breach at target stores. on thursday, the retailer said that 40 million customers debit and credit cards might have been compromised by hackers. the security breach occurred between november 27th and december 15th at brick- and-mortar target stores. as an added precaution, chase is temporarily limiting atm debit withdrawal for potential

victims to just $100 a day and purchases are limited to $300 a day. the bank is also automatically reissuing all affected debit cards. it's the last weekend before christmas and shoppers are out in droves, picking out the last remaining items on their lists. thanksgiving came late this year, making the christmas shopping season six days shorter many stores are also staying open late to attract shoppers. developing news tonight about severe weather in the south and midwest, blamed for the deaths of two people. in arkansas, meteorologist say it appears two tornadoes touched down damaging 20 homes and injuring five people. in mississippi, two men died as storms pushed across that state. one man was killed when his trailer home was blown over and another when his car slammed into a fallen tree. four u.s. service members were injured when small-arms fire hit their plane aste tried

. >> around the bay area volunteers made a last-minute push to sign people up for health care coverage under the also known as and anyone who wants to start insurance by the first of the year needs to enroll by monday. >> reporter: a team of cal students walked the streets of this west berkeley neighborhood this afternoon, going door-to-door, and spreading the word about the affordable care act the key deadline coming monday. about a dozen student volunteers took part in what they call the covered berkeley brigade. andrew wong is in charge of this grassroots campaign. their goal is to knock on several hundred doors today and make it easy for the uninsured to get covered. >> we know that people are busy and people have a lot of obligations and we're bringing it to them. we know that health care is really important for everyone and we want to bring them the opportunity to enroll at their

door. >> everybody needs to be covered. >> reporter: and today inside the vallejo community center, they sat down with volunteers. this event was put on by health care workers from seiu. >> this is the best way to have them come in and find out what options we have and what they can afford. >> reporter: rachel jackson came down because her part-time job doesn't provide benefits and for this mother of two, health care is critical, because she has lived with hodgkin's lymphoma. >> i need to make sure they cast it early. come january i will be able to make an appointment. i'm so excited about thatment covered california is seeing a surge of applicants ahead of monday's deadline. the latest figures show well over 50,000 people have enrolled in health plans in just the past week.

in berkeley, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. san josi police are saebing for sunsets from a suspects from a double shooting near san joaquin university at least two males were shot one with critical injuries remains from the hospital tonight. other had minor injuries. 17 people are without a place to live of a two-alarm fire ripped through their homes this afternoon. the fire was reported around 4:30 at a six-unit building near hall avenue in the willow glen neighborhood. no one was injured. the red cross has been called in to assist displaced residents. the cause of the fire is under investigation. a redwood city metal recyclinger the scene of two fires has been told to keep a closer eye on that facility. the city manager has asked them to keep three staff members on site 24 hours a day for 60 days

starting monday. one security guard was at the yard when a fire broke out early tuesday. a shelter-in-place advisory was issued for for three bay area counties due to heavy smoke from the fire. police arrested a former massage therapist from menlo park on allegations that he sexually assaulted clients. rajesh turned himself in after he was charged with misdemeanor sexual battery. in 2012 a woman reported that he assaulted her during an appointment at the labelle spa in palo alto. vashist is out on bail. >> it all started on friday when a 19-year-old woman was reported missing from her sonoma county home and last seen in fremont with 32-year-

old william tweedie a wanted felony. sheriff's deputies tracked tweedy tweedie down to a home in  guerneville. investigators say the woman had gone with tweedie involvery and was unharmed. at the women's resource center across the street from the san francisco jail, there are hundreds of toys waiting to be given to children whose mom or dad is in jail. parents told deputies what their kids wanted for christmas and a gift was purchased for that child. organizers say having a present under the tree from a parent who is incarcerated helps both the child and adult cope during this difficult time. >> the moms and the dads have signed up and then the caregivers can come ovhere and get the presents. we have wrapping available. so it can be under the tree and from their incarcerated parent. >> 100 children received toys today. republican senators still

angry over the elimination of filibusters for presidential appointments, the senate recessed yesterday without confirming nominees to san francisco's federal district court. the district is considered in a state of crisis with three vacancies. the nominees are vince chhabria, a deputy city attorney in san francisco, beth freeman a san mateo county judge and james donato an antitrust lawyer in san francisco of senate's action means that president obama will have to resubmit the nominations in january. president obama and the first family are winding up their first day of christmas vacation in hawai'i. the president has no public events scheduled during his two- week visit to his home state. last year, the president was forced to cut his holiday short to address the fiscal crisis in washington the day after christmas. heading east for the holiday? be prepared, we'll show you the

appreciation ceremony today at lake merritt in oakland. >> the ceremony honored a $150- year-old eucalyptus tree fall as winds hit the area at 60 miles per hour. the public works department decided to hold the ceremony because many people have expressed their sadness at the loss of the big tree. the city is planning to save a round of the tree to make an historical timeline on it, showing significant dates in oakland's history. the city has not yet decided where the tree round will be displayed. bay area commuters breathing a lot easier tonight. >> ac transit and bart come to contract resolutions within hours of each other. what it means for riders. a real-life nativity scene in the bay area, the display celebrating the story of christmas and it's drawing hundreds of people tonight.

ac transit bus drivers who weren't on the routes this morning, met at their oakland union headquarters to hear the details of their new agreement. >> i just know that i don't like it. i think the fight is over, you know what i mean in you have to throw towel in sometime. >> reporter: union president says the deal including a raise of 9.5% over three years and $120 per month health care contribution. >> it's a good deal, because we definitely want to make sure that if we can to keep the service on the streets and make sure that our riding public is not inconvenienced in any way. >> reporter: bart and its unions reached a deal around 2:00 a.m. and union leaders are hopeful it closes the doors on talk of a third strike. >> we ended up being able to resolve some of these issues. >> reporter: seiu's president this resolves the family leave issue, but eliminating the six weeks in disputed contract and instead allowing workers to take up to 12 weeks of family leave using vacation or sick-leave, which

low-paying jobs from good- paying jobs with benefits. >> a lot of these jobs are held by minority, african-americans, and latino people. working people from all across the country. >> staples did not respond to our calls for comment. recently the berkeley city council restricted the use of the berkeley post office to public uses if it is sold. some east bay children who might not have had a merry christmas got much-needed help from police and fire volunteers today. but as ktvu's allie rasmus explains it was the volunteers who needed help to make it happen. >> reporter: the line stretched outside of the ywca in richmond this morning. bundled up against the cold parents and their kids waited anxiously in line for christmas to come a few days early. >> the toys, to give my kids some toys and they give out food too, so it helps out a lot-

inside the gym, volunteers formed an assembly line, hauling up and handing out bags of gifts the fire departments and police have hosted this event for years. in previous years the organization had given away toys to as much a2,000 families and this year they had to cut the number in half. because until just a few days ago they had say shortage of donations. >> five days ago we put out a request to the public to help us make our goal and $5700 was raised by on-line donation by people giving $20, $30 here and there. >> reporter: another $10,000 came through with chevron offering to match it. this bike raffle provide an extra miracle for some in line. organize only had 400 bikes for the one thousand families and kimmy curry drew one of the winning tickets. >> this is wonderful.

i appreciate it. >> curry says it's been a tough year financially and she prepared her daughter for the possibility of a christmas without presents. >> my daughter was like, mommy, if i don't get anything for christmas, i'm happy i have my family and that made me very, very happy. so now she gets a bike. so everything works out. >> reporter: thanks to donations, volunteers and the hard work of the people who organize this event, all of these parents and kids went home with smiles on their faces. in richmond, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. san leader was the scene for a big bike giveaway. the police department raised more than $20,000 to purchase 450 bikes for its bikes for takes program. the giveaway helps to provide new bicycles to low-income families and underprivileged children. ky with anize club also donated bicycle helmets. a living nativity draw

. sledding sacramento. liberty towers church organized an effort to have one hundred tons of snow trucked in and they set it up for six sledding runs free to anyone who wanted to go for a ride. organizers say they expected more than 3700 people to show up and take a sled ride. >> for your saturday, 67

degrees in livermore, the warm spot. areas in the region were 10-12 degrees above average. so for the first day of winter, doesn't feel like winter. 56 in san rafael, 64 in oakland. look at the jet stream, it's just jacked up this way over the top of us. and sends everything into the  plains and across the continental united states and keeps us dry and does this not just this week and not just in in five-day period, but probably the next five-day period. very dry pattern. not good if you are going skiing or watching the reservoirs. low 30s, around freezing in napa and in the outskirts of napa, temperatures below freezing. most of issue upper 30s-mid- 30s. patchy fog, there might be a little bit showing up tonight. it's patchy and will be gone

tomorrow. jack london square, beautiful, temperatures in the upper 40s and 50s. we look at the extended forecast and that pattern i just showed you on the satellite, this is the computer model going out. it keeps us up there. that is how i know we'll be dry through this five-day and this pattern wants to exist the next five days. so high pressure is pretty dominant. it's going to stay dominant through the next 4-5 days. temperatures warm up coast and inland and you see mid-60s on the first day of the winter and you see mid-60s on the second, third and fourth day of the winter. 65 in santa rosa. i suspect tomorrow will be slighter warmer than today. in the rest of the week, the numbers fluctuate a couple of degrees up and down, but on the warm side. 64 in pleasanton. the five-day forecast, with no rain to show in this five-day period.
